A mixed mash of sugar beet roots and potato tubers with a sugar concentration of 23.7% w/v was used as a feedstock for bioethanol production. Enzymatic digestion successfully reduced the viscosity of the mixture, enabling subsequent heat pretreatment for liquefaction/sterilization. An energy-consuming thick juice preparation from sugar beet for concentration and sterilization was omitted in this new process.  相似文献

The production of enriched fructose syrups and ethanol from beet molasses using Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 36858 was studied. In batch experiments with a total sugar concentration between 94.9 and 312.4 g/L, the fructose yield was above 93% of the theoretical value. The ethanol yield and volumetric productivity in the beet molasses media with sugar concentration below 276.2 g/L were in the range of 59-76% of theoretical value and between 0.48 and 2.97 g of ethanol/(L x h), respectively. The fructose fraction in the carbohydrates content of the produced syrups was more than 95% when the total initial sugar concentration in the medium was below 242.0 g/L. Some oligosaccharides and glycerol were also produced in all tested media. Raffinose and the produced oligosaccharides were completely consumed by the end of the fermentation process when the total initial sugar concentration was below 190.1 g/L. The glycerol concentration was below 16.1 g/L. The results could be useful for a potential industrial production of ethanol and high-fructose syrup from sugar beet molasses.  相似文献

Effects of increasing weed-beet density on sugar-beet yield and quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Weed beets are an increasing problem in many sugar-beet crops in many countries. At present about one sugar-beet field in four in England is infested with weed-beet seed. Control in other crops can be achieved using selective herbicides but in sugar beet the weed beets, many of which are of annual habit, are not easily controlled and often compete with the crop. Experiments were done to quantify the yield loss caused by weed beet in sugar-beet crops. Transects were laid out across three fields in 1985 and 1986 and plots located thereon to include the range of weed-beet densities found in the field. Weed beet did not affect the concentration of sugar (sucrose), potassium, sodium, α amino nitrogen or invert sugar in the crop beets. Root and sugar yields were progressively reduced by increasing densities of weed beet. A rectangular hyperbola described the data slightly better than an asymptotic model. There was no indication of a threshold density of weed beet below which there was no yield loss, which averaged 11.7% for each weed beet plant/m2. This corresponds to an average 0.6% sugar yield loss for each 1% of bolted weed beet in the root crop up to 100%, which is similar to the reported losses resulting from bolters in the root crop.  相似文献

BNYVV concentration in the tap roots of sugar beet varieties grown in rhizomania-infested fields During plant development, the BNYVV concentration in several commercially available rhizomania-tolerant sugar beet varieties and one susceptible variety was examined as an index of the intensity of infection. The root weight, sugar content and sugar yield of the same varieties in fields naturally infested with rhizomania were also measured. Significant negative correlations were found between the average virus concentration in the tap root and yield parameters in infested fields. These were largely independent of the growth stage of beet plants used for virological investigations. However, the negative correlations between virus concentration and yield were not significant if rhizomania-tolerant varieties only were compared. The possibility that virus concentration might be used as a criterion for selection in addition to yield performance is discussed. This may lead to selection that is targeted more directly at rhizomania resistance and thereby accelerate breeding work.  相似文献

A laboratory process was established for ethanol production by fermentation of sugar beet molasses with the bacterium Zymomonas mobilis. Sucrose in the molasses was hydrolyzed enzymatically to prevent levan formation. A continuous system was adopted to reduce sorbitol formation and a two-stage fermentor was used to enhance sugar conversion and the final ethanol concentration. This two-stage fermentor operated stably for as long as 18 d. An ethanol concentration of 59.9 g/l was obtained at 97% sugar conversion and at high ethanol yield (0.48 g/g, 94% of theoretical). The volumetric ethanol productivity (3.0 g/l·h) was superior to that of batch fermentation but inferior to that of a single-stage continuous system with the same medium. However, the thanol concentration was increased to a level acceptable for economical recovery. The process proposed in this paper is the first report of successful fermentation of sugar beet molasses in the continuous mode using the bacterium Z. mobilis.  相似文献

Differences in beet weight and sugar concentration of four commercial varieties grown on two types of soil and at different planting density were related to changes in the numbers, sizes and sugar storage capacities of the storage root cells. Much of the variation in beet weight between varieties and soil type was attributable to differences in cell size, less to differences in their number. Differences in weight of beet grown at different densities were caused equally by changes in number of cells and their size. Variation in sugar concentration of the beet was, in all cases, determined more by differences in cell size than in their capacity tostore sugar, but the two factors were not wholly independent of each other.  相似文献

Procedures are described for producing axillary shoots fromseedling apices and adventitious shoots from petioles and leaf-derivedcallus of sugar beet cultivars. The rate of adventitious shootregeneration from petioles was influenced by temperature, BAPconcentration of the medium, and the time in culture of theseedling apices from which the petioles were excised. Petiolesectioning confirmed that adventitious shoots originated inthe sub-epidermal parenchyma. Two distinct types of callus wereproduced from leaf explants, but only white friable callus wascapable of shoot development. This callus developed from browntissue and was composed of thin-walled cells with dense cytoplasmand prominent nuclei. Green compact callus with thick-walledlignified cells developed from green tissue, but did not produceshoots. Successful seed sterilization and shoot regenerationfrom petiole explants and callus was cultivar-dependent. Adventitiousshoots were rooted and successfully transplanted to pottingcompost under glasshouse conditions. This study examines the influence of ensiled sugar beets (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris) on preference and short-time dry matter (DM) intake of goats. Whole sugar beets were ensiled either without any silage additive (sugar beet silage (SBS)) or with a chemical additive (6 l/t) containing 85% formic and propionic acids (treated sugar beet silage (TBS)) and were chopped after ensiling. The influence of different proportions of SBS (0%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 18.75% and 25% of dietary DM) and TBS (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of DM) in partial mixed rations on short-time DM intake by goats (adult Saanen type wethers; n = 10) was studied in two separate, independent trials. Preference behaviour was investigated by offering the goats two different experimental diets per day and offer each possible combination of them (n = 10) once throughout the trial. On this basis, the mean DM intake (within 30 min and 3 h) of each experimental diet was determined. Both sugar beet silages showed good fermentation quality with low pH. By using the chemical silage additive, the production of ethanol was reduced and considerable amounts of sugar were preserved. In the short-term preference experiment, increasing concentrations of sugar beet silage in the ration increased DM intake (p < 0.05) in a linear way with a strong preference for those diets containing high amounts of sugar beet silage. Initial DM intake after 30 min was 4–5 fold increased for diets containing the highest beet concentration. It is assumed that the preference was positively influenced by sugar and sweet taste or the associated higher concentration of metabolisable energy.  相似文献

To investigate the factors governing the accumulation of sucroseand amino acids in the taproots of sugar beet, their contentswere measured in the leaves, phloem sap and the taproots ofsugar beet, fodder beet and a hybrid between both, grown oneither 3.0 or 0.5 mM nitrate. In the taproots the contents ofmalate, citrate and inorganic ions were also determined. Forthe high sucrose accumulation in sugar beet as compared to theother varieties three factors were found. (a) In sugar beet,less amino acids and more sucrose are taken up into the phloemthan in fodder beet. (b) In sugar beet, the sucrose and aminoacid syntheses are less sensitive to the nitrate concentrationsthat are required for optimal plant growth than in other varieties.In fodder beet, upon raising the nitrate concentration from0.5 mM to 3 mM, the synthesis and storage of sucrose is decreasedand that of amino acids increased. The corresponding valuesin sugar beet (0.5 mM) are similar to those in fodder beet andare not much affected by an increase of nitrate. (c) The sucroseaccumulation is limited by the accumulation of inorganic ionsin the taproots. The sucrose content in the taproots is negativelycorrelated to the total ion content. Whereas sucrose representstwo-third of all solutes in the taproots of sugar beet, it amountsto only one-third of the solutes in fodder beet taproots. Gamma radiation induces diarrhea as an acute injury. We have studied whether ingestion of sugar beet fiber influences radiation-induced diarrhea. Abdominal irradiation with gamma rays induced diarrhea in male Wistar/ST rats from 2 to 7 days after a single sublethal dose. The body weight of the irradiated rats was decreased temporarily at 4 days after irradiation regardless of the ingestion of sugar beet fiber. At day 8, it returned to almost the same level as that of unirradiated rats. A change in daily food intake resulted in a pattern similar to that for body weight. Dietary sugar beet fiber had little significant effect on the changes in body weight and daily food intake, and its ingestion significantly decreased gamma-ray-induced diarrhea. Changes in biochemical and histological parameters in intestinal mucosa (small intestine, cecum and colon) were not greatly influenced by the ingestion of sugar beet fiber through the periods of diarrhea. It was concluded that dietary sugar beet fiber ameliorated the diarrhea induced by abdominal irradiation. We suggest that the inhibitory effect of the ingestion of sugar beet fiber is due to its effects on the luminal environment, such as support for bacterial function in the luminal contents in the colon of animals that ingest sugar beet fiber.  相似文献

During our studies on the interaction of anthocyanins and plant virus diseases, reproduction of sugar beet mosaic (SBMV) and tobacco mosaic viruses (TMV) was investigated. Experiments were carried out in leaves of sugar beet,Beta vulgaris cv. Dobrovicka N and its spontaneous anthocyanized mutant. SBMV induces a systemic infection while TMV is responsible for primary local symptoms in sugar beet leaves only. Our quantitative analyses onAmaranthus caudatus L. andChenopodium quinoa Wilid. showed a significant decrease in concentration of SBMV in juice extracted from anthocyanized beet plants as compared with extracts from normal green infected plants. Significant differences were also obtained when SBMV — containing juice was tested in mixtures with healthy extracts from anthocyanized and normal green plants. Also the intensity of TMV symptoms in beet leaves was considerably decreased in leaves of antho-eyanized plants.  相似文献

The kinetics of sugar efflux from slices of sugar beet rootswas investigated using washing solutions of different osmoticpressure and calcium concentration. The leakage of sucrose isstrongly reduced in solutions of high osmotic pressure (>0·8MPa) or high calcium concentration (10 mM). Turgor-dependentnecrosis of parenchyma cells (plasmoptysis) is the main causeof sucrose efflux from the tissue in hypotonic media with lowcalcium activity. This was shown by good correlation betweenthe percentage of leaked sucrose and the percentage of tissuewater, which was in the free space after the washing procedure.The kinetics of sugar leakage from beet root parenchyma is nobasis for the estimation of the sugar contents of the free spaceor the cytoplasm in situ.  相似文献

Soil inhabiting pests and rot of feeding roots of sugar beet depending on rotation - Results of a long-term trial Over a period of 17 years a trial was carried out with sugar beet, cereals and oilseed rape in different crop rotations on a field near Göttingen (Lower Saxony). The frequency of sugar beet in the rotation was 17, 25, 33 and 67 %. In absence of beet nematodes, root and sugar yield of the beet decreased after repeated growing of sugar beet in short rotations compared to variants with long rotations. Sugar content and beet quality were only slightly influenced. By applying a bioassay (BW-Test) with young beet plants in the greenhouse it was shown that increasing infections on the tips of rootlets of the beet plants were the cause for decreasing beet yield in close rotations. Mortality of young beet plants and progress of infection in the test indicated roughly the quantity of pathogenic fungi in the soil. In the roots of the bait platits the parasitic fungus Aphanomyces cochlioides predominated. Rate of infection and yield reduction in the field were decisively influenced by weather conditions. Differences in yield between sugar beet grown in a three-year and a four-year rotation, however, were not significant. An occurrence of beet pests depending on crop rotation was stated only for Atomaria linearis and this only in a few years.  相似文献

A digoxigenin-labelled 5S rDNA probe containing the 5S rRNA gene and the adjacent intergenic spacer was used for in situ hybridization to metaphase and interphase chromosomes of a trisomic stock from sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.). Three chromosomes of primary trisomic line IV (T. Butterfass. Z. Bot. 52: 46-77. 1964) revealed signals close to the centromeres. Polymorphisms of 5S rDNA repeats in a segregating population were used to map genetically the 5S rRNA genes within a cluster of markers in linkage group II of sugar beet. The concentration of genetic markers around the centromere presumably reflects the suppressed recombination frequency in centromeric regions. The correlation of physical and genetic data allowed the assignment of a linkage group to sugar beet chromosome IV according to line IV of the primary trisomics.  相似文献

A flocculent killer yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain H-1, which was selected for ethanol fermentation of beet molasses, has a tendency to lose its viability in distillery waste water (DWW) of beet molasses mash after ethanol fermentation. Through acclimations of strain H-1 in DWW, strain W-9, resistant to DWW, was isolated. Strain M-9, resistant to 2-deoxyglucose was further isolated through acclimations of strain W-9 in medium containing 150 ppm 2-deoxyglucose. A fermentation test of beet molasses indicated that the ethanol productivity and sugar consumption were improved by strain M-9 compared to the parental strain H-1 and strain W-9. The concentration of ethanol produced by strain M-9 was 107.2 g/l, and the concentration of residual sugars, which were mainly composed of sucrose and fructose, were lower than those produced by the parental strain H-1 and strain W-9 at the end of fermentation of beet molasses.  相似文献

The Limulus amebocyte lysate test has been used for determination of pyrogens in sugar of different qualities. All the samples of domestic white sugar and beet raw sugar produced in Sweden during 1976 had a very low content of endotoxins, less than 10 ng/g of sugar. Imported cane raw sugar was, however, highly contaminated. The highest value obtained corresponds to about 100 mg of Escherichia coli endotoxin per g of raw sugar. Such crude sugar cannot, even after refining, be used for medical purposes. Instead, Swedish beet sugar is used as the raw material for production of invert sugar solutions for parenteral administration. The amount of endotoxin in this sugar is less than 1 ng/g.  相似文献

Pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Fenomen) and sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L. cv. Monohill) were cultivated in nutrient media without or with 10 μM CdCl2. Leaves of the same size and stage of development, detached or still attached to the intact plants, were submerged into redistilled water containing 1 to 250 μM CdCl2. The uptake experiments were run for 1 to 8 h at pH 3.6 and 5.1. Cuticular transpiration rate, density of leaf and density of stomata were also measured. Percentage of open stomata was studied at different pH.
Foliar uptake of Cd into the leaf is evident since Cd is transported from the exposed part of the pea leaves, through the petioles and into the stipules, and since the Cd concentration of the leaves increases with time and external Cd concentration. The foliar uptake depends on the permeability of the cuticular membrane, which is increased by a high intrinsic Cd level, which in turn enhances the foliar uptake of Cd in sugar beet. Higher cuticular permeability in pea than in sugar beet is shown by a 2.5 times higher cuticular transpiration rate and a 4 times lower density of leaf for pea, which causes a 7 times higher foliar uptake in pea than in sugar beet. Low pH decreases the net uptake of Cd, probably by an exchange reaction in the cutin and pectin of the cuticular membrane. Stomata are not directly involved in the Cd uptake, and the differences in the sum total of stomatal aperture area per unit leaf area is not related to differences in foliar uptake of Cd. Percentage of open stomata, calculated as average of both sides of the leaves, was not affected by changes in pH: but especially at high pH. proportionally more stomata were open on the adaxial than on the abaxial side.  相似文献

Reciprocal gene exchange between cultivated sugar beet and wild beets in seed production areas is probably the reason for the occurence of weed beets in sugar beet production fields. Therefore, when releasing transgenic sugar beet plants into the environment, gene transfer to wild beets ( Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima ) has to be considered. In this study the transfer of BNYVV- (beet necrotic yellow vein virus) resistance and herbicide-tolerance genes from two transgenic sugar beet lines that were released in field experiments in 1993 and 1994 in Germany to different wild beet accessions was investigated. In order to evaluate the consequences of outcrossing, manual pollinations of emasculated wild beet plants with homozygous transgenic sugar beet plants were performed. In the resulting hybrids the transgenes were stably inherited according to Mendelian law. Gene expression in leaves and roots of the hybrids was in the same range as in the original transgenic sugar beet plants. Moreover, it was found that in one of the wild beet accessions, transfer and expression of the BNYVV resistance gene did considerably increase the level of virus resistance.  相似文献

The yield of plants of monogerm cultivars of sugar beet artificially infected with both beet yellows and beet mild yellowing viruses was, on average, depressed 2–7% for every 100 ‘infected plant weeks’, equivalent to c. £25/ha at 1976 prices. The cv. Vytomo, previously recommended to growers as being tolerant of infection by virus yellows, had a high sugar content and abundant foliage but in field trials its actual yield of sugar was no greater when infected, and lower when virus-free, than that of some other monogerm cultivars.  相似文献
