In planktonic ecosystems, algae and bacteria exhibit complex interrelationships, as algae provide an important organic matter source for microbial growth while microbial metabolism recycles limiting nutrients for algae in a loose commensalism. However, algae and bacteria can also compete for available nutrients if supplies of organic matter are sufficient to satisfy bacterial demand. We developed a stoichiometrically explicit model of bacteria–algae interactions that incorporated realistic assumptions about algal light and nutrient utilization, algal exudation of organic matter, and bacterial processing of organic matter and nutrients. The model makes specific predictions about how the relative balance of algae and bacteria should change in response to varied nutrient and light availability seen in lakes and oceans. The model successfully reproduces published empirical data and indicates that, under moderate nutrient supply, the bacterial percentage of total respiration should be maximal at intermediate light intensity.  相似文献

Effects of different molecular size fractions (< 1000 MW, < 10 000 MW, < 100 000 MW and <0.1 μm) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the growth of bacteria, algae and protozoa from a highly humic lake were investigated. DOM from catchment drainage water as well as from the lake consisted mostly (59–63%) of high molecular weight (HMW) compounds (> 10 000 MW). With excess inorganic nutrients, the growth rate and yield of bacteria were almost identical in all size fractions. However, in < 1000 MW fractions and with glucose added, a longer lag phase occurred. Without added nutrients both the growth rates and biomasses of bacteria decreased towards the smaller size fractions and the percentage of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) used during the experiment and the growth efficiency of bacteria were lower than with excess nutrients. The growth efficiency of bacteria was estimated to vary between 3–66% in different MW fractions, largely depending on the nutrient concentrations, but the highest growth efficiencies were observed in HMW fractions and with glucose. The growth of algae was clearly lowest in the < 1000 MW fraction. In dim light no net growth of algae could be found. In contrast, added nutrients substantially enhanced algal growth and in deionized water with glucose, algae achieved almost the same growth rate and biomass as in higher MW fractions of DOM. The results suggested that bacteria and some algae were favoured by DOM, but protozoans seemed to benefit only indirectly, through bacterial grazing. The utilization of DOM by bacteria and algae was strongly affected by the availability of phosphorus and nitrogen.  相似文献

The marine diatom Thallasiosira pseudonanna (3H) and several bacteria associated with it were isolated from batch cultures at the University of Delaware mariculture facility. The interaction between the algae and each of the bacteria was investigated. One of the isolates, T827/2B (Pseudomonas sp.), was incapable of surviving in f/2 culture medium unless the algae were present. When the algae and T827/2B were grown together in the f/2 medium, the bacterial growth was stimulated and the algal growth was inhibited. Bacterial filtrate had a similar effect on the algae, indicating that the bacterial effect is an indirect one most likely resulting from the excretion of a harmful compound into the medium. Preliminary characterization of the material excreted by the bacteria indicates that it s proteinaceous in nature. The interactions observed does not fit into any single category of interactions but can be explained as a combination of competition and indirect parasitism.  相似文献

Depending on the chemical and physical environment, algae and heterotrophic bacteria in stream periphyton communities likely engage in both positive and negative interactions. We tested the hypothesis that bacteria are more closely associated with algae when allochthonous sources of labile DOC are low and algae are not light limited. Secondly, we tested the hypothesis that, under extremely oligotrophic conditions, bacteria will out-compete algae for inorganic nutrients if their carbon requirements are met by allochthonous sources. Experiments were carried out using in situ light manipulations and nutrient diffusing substrates (releasing inorganic nutrients and /or glucose) in Harts Run, an oligotrophic stream located in north central Kentucky. Although we found that both algal and bacterial biomass were higher under ambient light, bacteria did not respond to glucose in the dark. This may indicate that bacteria were associated with algae not as a carbon source, but as a substrate for colonization. In the nutrient × glucose manipulation, we found that bacteria were co-limited by inorganic nutrients. There was no evidence of algae being negatively affected by competition with bacteria for nitrogen and phosphorus. Although low temperatures might have played a role in preventing inorganic nutrient competition between these two groups of organisms, the results of both experiments may indicate that the quantitative link between periphytic bacteria and algae is stronger under oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

A study was made of bacterial contaminants isolated from an algal mass-culture unit. The study was performed specifically to determine the dependence of the size of bacterial population on algal density and the nature of any association of the contaminants with the algal cell. Growth of the bacterial contaminants on standard medium was also investigated. An estimate was made of the O2 uptake of the bacterial population under normal operating conditions of the algal massculture system. Viable numbers of bacteria tended to increase with increased algal density. Bacteria were found imbedded in the surface of algal cells when the cultures of algae were characterized by subnormal rates of growth and photosynthetic gas exchange. Bacterial isolates failed to grow in standard medium alone, thus implying a dependency of bacterial growth on material(s) produced by the algae. A slight inhibitory effect on algal growth was noted in the case of two of three of the bacterial isolates. Manometric studies demonstrated that the bacterial population normally found in the algal cultures did not appreciably effect total gas exchange.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The response of bacterial production (measured as [3H]TdR incorporation rate) to spectral solar radiation was quantified experimentally in an oligotrophic high-mountain lake over 2 years. Bacterial responses were consistent: ultraviolet-B (UVB) was harmful, whereas ultraviolet-A (UVA) + photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and PAR enhanced bacterial activity. Full sunlight exerted a net stimulatory effect on bacterial activity in mid-summer but a net inhibitory effect towards the end of the ice-free period.
2. Experiments were undertaken to examine whether the bacterial response pattern depended on the presence of algae and/or was modulated by the availability of a limiting inorganic nutrient (phosphorus, P). In the absence of algae, [3H]TdR incorporation rates were significantly lower than when algae were present under all light treatments, and the consistent bacterial response was lost. This suggests that the bacterial response to spectral solar radiation depends on fresh-C released from algae, which determines the net stimulatory outcome of damage and repair in mid-summer.
3. In the absence of algae, UVB radiation inhibited bacteria when they were strongly P-deficient (mean values of N : P ratio: 46.1), whereas it exerted no direct effect on bacterial activity when they were not P-limited.
4. P-enrichment of lake water markedly altered the response of bacteria to spectral solar radiation at the end of ice-free period, when bacteria were strongly P-deficient. Phosphorus enrichment suppressed the inhibitory effect of full sunlight that was observed in October, both in whole lake water (i.e. including algae) and in the absence of algae. This indicates that the bacterial P-deficiency, measured as the cellular N : P ratio, was partly responsible for the net inhibitory effect of full sunlight, implying a high bacterial vulnerability to UVB.  相似文献

The impacts of different nutrient additions (N + P, N + P + C, 4N + P, 4N + P + C, N + 2P) on the growth of algae and bacteria were studied in a microcosm experiment. Since alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) provides an indication of phosphorus deficiency, the higher value for algal APA in the treatments with excess nitrogen and for bacterial APA in the treatments with excess carbon suggested that, algal and bacterial phosphorus-limited status were induced by abundant nitrogen and carbon input, respectively. Bacterial phosphorus-limited status was weakened due to higher bacterial competition for phosphorus, compared to algae. In comparison with the bacterial and specific bacterial APA, higher values of algal and specific algal APA were found, which showed a gradual increase that coincided with the increase of chlorophyll a concentration. This fact indicated not only a stronger phosphorus demand by algae than by bacteria, but also a complementary relationship for phosphorus demand between algae and bacteria. However, this commensalism could be interfered by glucose input resulting in the decline of chlorophyll a concentration. Furthermore, the correlation between bacterial numbers and chlorophyll a concentration was positive in treatments without carbon and blurry in treatments with carbon. These observations validate a hypothesis that carbon addition can stimulate bacterial growth justifying bacterial nutrient demand, which decreases the availability of nutrients to algae and affects nutrient relationship between algae and bacteria. However, this interference would terminate after algal and bacterial adaption to carbon input.  相似文献

Marine macroalgae are subjected to large numbers of bacteria in their environment. These bacteria have the potential to affect the health and ecology of algae in a variety of ways and can be both beneficial and harmful to the algae. Therefore, algae have likely evolved mechanisms to differentially regulate the growth of bacterial species. In this study, we examined the effects of the green alga Dictyosphaeria ocellata on the bacterioplankton community in field enclosure experiments and on individual, naturally co-occurring bacterial strains in laboratory co-culture experiments. In field experiments, we compared the bacterioplankton communities of enclosures with and without D. ocellata using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and found that the alga significantly changed the bacterial community composition. Seven bacterial phylotypes were eliminated in the presence of the alga and five were found exclusively with the alga. We also examined the effects of algal-treated water on the development of the bacterial community within enclosures and found no change in the community composition. Laboratory co-culture experiments revealed that D. ocellata and D. ocellata extracts affect the growth of individual bacterial strains in a species-specific manner and that the mechanisms responsible for these effects also differed by bacterial species.  相似文献

Herbivorous crustacean zooplankton may influence bacterial populations of lakes directly by grazing on them or indirectly by grazing on algae. In Lake Constance a regularly observed decrease of bacterial density during periods of high abundance of cladocerans (clearwater phase) indicated bacterial grazing losses. However, cladoceran grazing on bacteria appeared to be less efficient than on algae. Moreover, cladocera reduced grazing pressure on bacteria by grazing on bacterivorous flagellates. Additionally, a shift of bacterial composition from an originally higher percentage of filamentous and aggregate growth forms towards a population of homogenously distributed small single celled bacteria was observed regularly at the beginning of the clearwater phase. Transient increases of bacterial abundance and productivity coinciding with the increase of cladocera at the end of the algal spring bloom were interpreted as field indications of indirect bacteria-zooplankton interactions due to crustacean grazing on phytoplankton. The release of organic carbon during grazing of crustacea on algae was considered as explanation for the observed stimulation of bacterial populations. Thereby, additional, otherwise inaccessible algal carbon would be made available to bacteria by zooplankton. Experimental support for this hypothesis was given by showing that bacteria were able to respond to crustacean grazing on algae by enhanced growth and activities. The possible impact of these direct and indirect crustacea-bacteria interactions on the abundance, activity and composition of bacterioplankton as well as on the structure and function of the total planktonic community is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the development of a periphyton community were studied in an outdoor artificial stream apparatus. Algal biomass, species composition, and bacterial cell density were measured under full sunlight and non-UVR (photosynthetically active radiation [PAR]-only) conditions. Attachment of algae was detected on days 6–9. Although the chlorophyll-a concentration under non-UVR conditions was 2–4 times that under full sunlight (PAR + UVR) throughout the experiment, neither net algal growth rate nor species composition differed significantly between the two light conditions. The relative carotenoid pigment contents of attached algae in the PAR + UVR condition were 1.1–1.3 times those in the non-UVR condition. Rates of increase of bacterial cell densities under the PAR + UVR condition were depressed by solar UVR for the first few days, although there were no apparent differences in the rates of increase between the light conditions later in the experiment. The small effect of UVR on the development of this periphyton community may be attributable to low UV flux at this study site and to the experimental conditions under which the algae were kept: a high physiological state with high nutrient conditions. Attached bacteria and algae that colonize substrata first are likely to be sensitive to solar UVR, and the negative effects of UVR are mitigated by the development of a periphyton community.  相似文献

During growth of larval turbot in aquaculture the first food supplied is usually the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis and algae are commonly included in the system as food for the rotifers, thereby maintaining their nutrient quality. As bacteria are known to influence markedly the survival of larval turbot, the effect of bacteria, isolated from larval turbot, on growth of Pavlova lutheri was measured over a 3-d period. Of 41 bacteria tested, 23 inhibited growth to various degrees, eight had no effect and 10 were weak growth stimulants. Four bacteria, identified as a Flavobacterium, Vibrio fluvialis, Vibrio natrigens and a Vibrio sp., were strongly inhibitory and the Flavobacterium inhibited growth of Pavlova lutheri from an inoculum of 103 colony-forming units per ml. Inhibition was due to a heat-labile factor released by the Flavobacterium into the culture medium. The Flavobacterium also produced bacteriocin(s) which inhibited the growth of a range of vibrios. Bacteria antagonistic towards algae would be undesirable in larval rearing and if bacteria are to be selected which are beneficial (probiotics) in larval rearing systems their possible interaction with algae must be considered.  相似文献

A microcosm study of nitrogen utilization in the Great Salt Lake,Utah   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Microcosms were used to study the effects of two inorganic nitrogen sources (ammonia and nitrate) and two organic nitrogen sources (urea and glutamic acid) on the growth of algae and bacteria found in the Great Salt Lake, Utah. Ammonia, nitrate and urea stimulated bacterial growth indirectly through increased algal production of unknown organic substances. Glutamic acid, representing readily available organic carbon and nitrogen, stimulated the bacteria directly. No nitrification was observed in the microcosms although nitrite was found when the microcosms were supplemented with nitrate. Lake sediment contained a number of anaerobic bacteria producing hydrogen sulfide, methane and other gases. Production of these gases was stimulated in the columns with high algal and bacterial activity.  相似文献

The growth characteristics of an algo-bacterial community (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and bacterial satellites) were studied, as well as the mechanism and patterns of bacterial effect on algae. Four strains of predominant bacteria were isolated and partially characterized. They were assigned to the following taxa: Rhodococcus terrea, Micrococcus roseus, and Bacillus spp. A pure culture of the alga under study was obtained by plating serial dilutions on agarized media with ampicillin. Within the algo-bacterial association, the alga had a higher growth rate (0.76 day(-1)) and yield (60 microg chlorophyll/ml culture) than in pure cultures (0.4 day(-1) and 10 microg chlorophyll/ml culture, respectively). The viability of the algal cells within the association was retained longer than in pure culture. Among the isolated bacterial satellites, strains B1 and Y1, assigned to the species Rhodococcus terrae, had the highest stimulatory effect on algal growth. The culture liquid of bacteria incubated under the conditions not permitting growth stimulated algal growth; the culture liquid of actively growing bacteria had an opposite effect.  相似文献

Red light kills bacteria via photodynamic action.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
With the increase in the number of antibiotic resistant strains of microorganism, the search for alternative treatments of microbial infections becomes all the more important. We report a novel method for bacterial inactivation based on the optical excitation of the naturally occurring (endogenous) photosensitzing porphyrins by red light. In particular, the pathogenic Gram-positive porphyrin producing ATCC strains Propionibacterium acnes, Actinomyces odontolyticus and Porphyromonas gingivalis were investigated. Sensitive autofluorescence spectroscopy revealed that these bacteria naturally synthezise the fluorescent photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX. In addition, bacterial plaque samples of periodontitis patients were studied. Non-labeled fluorescent bacterial colonies were exposed to red light at 632.8 nm, 100 mW/cm2 light intensity and 360 J/cm2 energy density using a helium-neon laser. The survival rate after a single phototreatment with red light was found to be 0.58 +/- 0.09 in the case of Propionibacterium acnes, 0.30 +/- 0.04 in Actinomyces odontolyticus and 0.59 +/- 0.10 in Porphyrormonas gingivalis compared to non-exposed bacteria suspensions. No photoeffect was found for the bacterium Streptococcus mutans which exhibited no detectable porphyrin autofluorescence. Red-light exposed plaque samples of patients showed significant reduction of colony forming units by 50% as well as a pronounced photoeffect on the pigmented species Prevotella intermedia. Taken together, these results suggest the treatment with red light can be potentially employed as an therapeutic method to inactivate certain pathogenic strains of porphyrin producing bacteria without the use of external photosensitizers.  相似文献

Commensalism based on organic carbon supplied by phytoplanktonand competition for mineral nutrients are important interactionsbetween bacteria and phytoplankton in oligotrophic clear-watersystems. Both interactions are influenced by zooplankton activity. To examine the relation ship between algae and bacteria in LakeLa Caldera, we studied: the correlations among phyto plankton, bacteria and phosphorus (P) dynamics; the ratio of organic carbonsupplied by algae to organic carbon demand by bacteria; andthe importance of P remineralized by metazooplankton for bothcommunities. Phytoplankton and bacteria had a similar seasonaldynamics, and there was a sig nificant and positive relationshipbetween bacterial abundance and algal biomass (P<0.01). However, the release of organic carbon from phytoplankton was usuallyhigher than the bacterioplankton carbon requirement. P availablevia zooplankton remineralization satisfied between 74 and 316%of the minimum P demands of algae and bacteria. To elucidatewhether zooplankton operate similarly on algae and bacterialgrowth or indirectly influence bacterial growth through phytoplanktonmetab olism, we performed zooplankton manipulation experiments.High zooplankton biomass in these experiments stimulated bothprimary and bacterial production, but release of organic carbonfrom phytoplankton declined. These results suggest a directstimulus of bacterial growth, so algae and bac teria can balancegrazing losses by compensatory growth. Further, the algal decreaseof the organic carbon supply for bacteria could, over time, lead to a change in the algae-bacteria interaction from competitionto commensalism. This reduction in organic carbon excretioncould affect the balance of the competitive interaction.  相似文献

Previously published experimental work by other authors has shown that certain motile marine bacteria are able to track free-swimming algae by executing a zigzag path and steering toward the algae at each turn. Here, we propose that the apparent steering behaviour could be a hydrodynamic effect, whereby an algal cell’s vorticity and strain-rate fields rotate a pursuing bacterial cell in the appropriate direction. Using simplified models for the bacterial and algal cells, we numerically compute the trajectory of a bacterial cell and demonstrate the plausibility of this hypothesis.  相似文献

Investigations were conducted into the effect of 3 marine bacteria, Vibrio anguillarum #19264, V. anguillarum #19109, and Escherichia coli, on the growth of 10 phytoplakters. A disc method on agar plates was used to evaluate growth responses. Growth enhancement of all algae in the presence of V. anguillarum #19264 occurred on an enriched agar medium; the other bacteria yielded variable responses. Evidence available is consistent with the hypothesis that growth enhancement of algae is related to the release of stimulating substances through bacterial hydrolysis of the agar.  相似文献
