Position-effect variegation in Drosophila, the mosaic expression of genes juxtaposed to heterochromatin, remains an enigmatic long-range phenomenon. While the chromatin-conformation model has been challenged, compelling contrary evidence is lacking. Nevertheless, progress has been made in the genetic and molecular analysis of genes involved in the process of heterochromatin formation and in the characterization of genetic elements normally located in pericentric heterochromatin. In addition, telomeric position effect in yeast provides a new model system for the study of the quasi-stable inheritance of an inactivated state.  相似文献

Fragile sites have been recognised since 1965. Extensive molecular characterisation of them has occurred in the last decade. Yet there are a number of interesting phenomena relating to fragile sites and similar lesions on chromosomes that have not been subject to recent published research. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases causing a system disorder, i.e.; it cannot be explained or understood by phenomena on single material scale. The diabetic foot is studied as flexible multibody structure by nonlinear finite element method. The physical and geometrical multiscale heterogeneity is solved by multilevel finite element approach. The diabetic tissue is described by internal coordinate's formalism, as complex multiscale process in tissue. The accompanying problem of the axisymetric wound healing is solved numerically. Some results related to foot deformity, stress and strain concentration and wound healing are presented.  相似文献

Trap-awareness and related phenomena whereby successive capture events are not independent is a feature of the majority of capture-recapture studies. This phenomenon was up to now difficult to incorporate in open population models and most authors have chosen to neglect it although this may have damaging consequences. Focusing on the situation where animals exhibit a trap response at the occasion immediately following one where they have been trapped but revert to their original naïve state if they are missed once, we show that trap-dependence is more naturally viewed as a state transition and is amenable to the current models of capture-recapture. This approach has the potential to accommodate lasting or progressively waning trap effects.  相似文献

Phagocytosis     
Phagocytosis is the process of recognition and engulfment of microorganisms or tissue debris that accumulate during infection, inflammation or wound repair. This ingestion, which is performed most efficiently by migrating, bone marrow-derived cells called ‘professional phagocytes’, is essential for successful host defense. Ingestion results when an invading microorganism is recognized by specific receptors on the phagocyte surface and requires multiple, successive interactions between the phagocyte and the target. Each of these interactions results in a signal transduction event, which is confined to the membrane and cytoskeleton around the ligated receptor and which is required for successful phagocytosis. Many molecules found at sites of inflammation or infection stimulate phagocytosis, so that efficient ingestion is confined to the site of infection or inflammation, which in turn limits the proinflammatory and tissue-destructive processes that accompany phagocytosis. This review summarizes current understanding of this critical component of host defense and of its regulation.  相似文献

When phagocytes have engulfed particles of sufficient size, the percentages of phagocytic cells containing 0, 1, 2, 3… particles can be measured by microscopic count. Two complementary models yield theoretical formulae for these percentages and these are checked with some experimental data. It is concluded that these models give a fair account of experimental results, and can provide us with a new kind of knowledge concerning phagocytosis.  相似文献
