Helix aspersa hibernates in Brittany (western France), where it may experience subzero temperatures. Studies on cold hardiness, although scarce in land snails, have shown a seasonal variation in supercooling ability, associated with high temperatures of crystallization (Tc). In the present work, two key environmental factors, temperature and photoperiod, were studied to elucidate, how they may affect the enhancement of supercooling ability in the snails from the end of summer to winter. Nine groups of adult snails were acclimated to different combinations of photoperiod (LD-16:8, LD-12:12, and LD-8:16 h) and temperature (15, 10, and 5°C). Temperature of crystallization, hemolymph osmolality, and water content were measured. The results demonstrate a significant effect of the photoperiod on Tc, i.e., shorter photoperiods induce lower Tc (LD-16:8 h, mean Tc = −3.0°C, SD = 2.0; LD-12:12 h, mean Tc = −4.3°C, SD = 1.9; LD-8:16 h, mean Tc = −5.2°C, SD = 1.9; n = 90), whereas the acclimation temperature had no effect. Measurements of hemolymph osmolality and water content showed that osmolality is negatively correlated with water content. Mechanisms such as dehydration are involved in the decrease of Tc. A declining photoperiod triggers a lower Tc, long before the onset of winter conditions. This response may have an adaptive component, allowing individuals to cope with the mild winters typically observed in oceanic regions. 相似文献

Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella fruticosawas evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance, and absence. According to our material P. fruticosais one of the most common bryozoan species in Norwegian fresh water, represented in samples from 251 localities. This species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71° 06 N (the northernmost record globally). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1179 m (maximum for Northern Europe).In most studies of freshwater bryozoans from the holarctic region, Plumatella fruticosahas been reported as widely distributed, but locally rare. In Norway, however, P. fruticosa is frequently found all over the country, even far to the north. The species apparently finds an optimal climate in the cold temperate and cold regions of Norway. Plumatella fruticosapreferred lakes, avoided slow-flowing rivers and ponds, and was absent in smaller water bodies. The species preferred somewhat higher elevation (400–900 m above sea level), but avoided lakes with the lowest summer temperatures (below 11 °C). P. fruticosa also preferred oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation, stony shores, lakes poor in calcium and magnesium (sometimes almost comparable with distilled water), where the water was clear and colourless, and slightly acidic to neutral. The species also preferred lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bogs and was absent when pH was below 5.2. P. fruticosa avoided eutrophic conditions with rich aquatic vegetation, alkaline water (pH above 7.0), lakes with a higher content of calcium and magnesium and those with strongly coloured water (above 100 mg Pt l–1). In spite of its preference for ion-poor conditions, it was also found in a brackish water lake. For most environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere. 相似文献

Scenedesmus obliquus, strain 633, which synthesizes ketocarotenoids and sporopollenin, also forms pink-red-colored cell walls. Both the cell walls left over after autospore liberation and those from homogenates of disrupted green cells have similar carotenoid pigmentation. Canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, an unidentified ketocarotenoid, and lutein were found as integral cell wall components. Freshwater bryozoans (Bryozoa) of Norway II: distribution and ecology of two species of Fredericella
Freshwater bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of the two Fredericella species was evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance and absence. The typical European Fredericella sultana (with glossy statoblasts) occurred at 72 localities, north to 70° 25 N (the northernmost record on a global scale). Its frequency dropped towards the north. Maximum elevation above sea level was 1097 m (maximum recorded for Northern Europe). Another species with pitted statoblasts, tentatively considered to be Fredericella indica, occurred at 50 localities, north to 71° 09 N (the northernmost record reported to date). The geographical distribution reflected a typical northern cold-water species. One third of the 50 records were from lakes situated north of the Arctic Circle, and rich colonies were found on the North Cape plateau, as far north as possible on the European mainland. The few records from southeastern Norway were from high mountain lakes, up to 1397 m above sea level (highest record for Europe). This species was not found in any of the numerous lowland lakes investigated in southeastern Norway where F. sultana was common. Both species tolerated a cold climate, especially Fredericella indica, and they occurred in a wide range of environments. F. sultana preferred lakes with rather low elevation above sea level, rich vegetation with plant species typical for eutrophic environments, gyttja sediments and stony "hard" shores, some wave action, high content of calcium, and slightly coloured water. This species avoided ponds and was absent from ditches and mires, avoided dystrophic lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bog, with dy sediments and strongly coloured water, avoided sites with small wave action, was indifferent to magnesium and low concentrations of calcium, and was absent from lakes with pH below 5.4. F. indica was only recorded from lakes. It preferred rather low temperatures, oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation and stony shores, some wave action, pH above 7.0, and low water colour (below 11 mg Pt l–1). This species avoided lakes with high temperatures and was absent above 20 °C, was absent where aquatic vegetation was rich or consisted of Sphagnum bog, avoided lakes with soft sediments of dygyttja and dy, places with small wave action, acid lakes, was absent at pH below 5.9, tended to avoid water with colour above 10 mg Pt l–1 and was absent in lakes with colour above 40 mg Pt l–1. F. sultana and F. indica occurred together in only six lakes, four in the north, and two in the southern mountain areas. The opposite sensitivity and reactions of the two species towards several environmental variables were supported by a logistic regression analysis. Because they have been less studied than most other non-human primates (partly due to the difficulties in accessing their habitat) the origins and phylogenetic relationships ofR. roxellana andR. bieti are controversial. These controversies may be clarified to some degree by adding information on the cranium. To this end, ten cranial dimensions analysed morphometrically here provide data about cranial differences among species of the genusRhinopithecus, and between species ofRhinopithecus andPygathrix nemaeus. Though more similar to each other than to any others in the same genus, the results show a significant separation betweenR. roxellana andR. bieti to the degree that they may be regarded as two different species. This confirms the conclusions of prior studies of external features, qualitative morphological characteristics and biochemical evidence (Yeet al, 1987; Zhang and Ryder, 1995; Jablonski, 1998; Penget al., 1988). The differences between these two species are mainly size-related, being highly correlated with cranial length. Other differences, probably non-size related shape differences, however, are highly correlated with cranial width. Sexual dimorphism plays a part in these findings. In relation to the other species, however, the results show that the Vietnam golden monkey (R. avunculus) has closer craniometric relationships with the douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus) rather than with the three Chinese golden monkey species. Of these, the Gouzhou species (R. brelichi) shares more similarity withR. avunculus and is more separate fromRhinopithecus roxellana and R. bieti. The smaller differentiation between the two latter species could be due to their more recent separation following the dramatic elevation of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau after the Middle Pleistocene. 相似文献

Summary Antisera against oLH1, oLH and hFSH were used to localize gonadotropic cells in the pars distalis of Cercopithecus aethiops and Papio hamadryas. Three separate cell types were observed for FSH and LH: 85% of immunohistochemically identified gonadotropic cells reacted to all the various antisera; 10% reacted with the anti-LH antibody only; and 5% with the anti-hFSH antibody only. Comparisons between adjacent serial sections treated with various antisera, other than anti-gonadotropic hormones, demonstrated that the gonadotropic cells of these monkeys did not respond to these antisera.

Résumé Des anticorps anti-LH ovine, anti-LH ovine et anti-FSH humaine ont été utilisés pour localiser les cellules gonadotropes dans la pars distalis de l'hypophyse des Singes Cercopithecus aethiops et Papio hamadryas. Trois catégories cellulaires distinctes, réagissant avec des anticorps anti-hormones gonadotropes, ont été observées. 85% des cellules immunoréactives identifiées en tant que cellules gonadotropes réagissent simultanément avec les différents anticorps mentionnés; 10% des cellules gonadotropes réagissent seulement avec l'anticorps anti-oLH et 5% de ces cellules seulement avec l'anticorps anti-hFSH. La comparaison avec des coupes adjacentes traitées par divers anticorps autres que les anticorps anti-gonadotropines prouve que les cellules gonadotropes de ces Singes ne réagissent jamais simultanément avec l'un ou l'autre de ces anticorps.

The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella repens was evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance and absence. P. repens is one of the most common bryozoan species in Norway. It is represented at 227 localities in our material and by 29 additional records. The species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71°09N (the northernmost record on the European mainland). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1052 m (maximum for Northern Europe). P. repens preferred lakes, avoided rivers, and was absent from the smallest water bodies. The species preferred (1) low elevation (2–200 m above sea level), (2) medium water temperature, (3) rich aquatic vegetation (eutrophic conditions), (4) small wave action, (5) high content of calcium and magnesium, (6) pH 6.4–9.6, and (7) rather high water colour. Otherwise P. repens avoided (1) habitats above 500 m but occurred up to 1052 m, (2) the lowest water temperature intervals, (3) sites with poor aquatic vegetation and stony shores, (4) medium wave action, (5) sites with a low calcium and magnesium content, (6) lakes of low water colour, and (7) lakes with pH below 6.6: it was absent from lakes with pH below 5.2. For many environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere. P. fungosa, P. casmiana, and P. emarginata are all rare in Norway. The total numbers of known localities, with our records in (), are 18 (11), 7 (7), and 7 (5), respectively. These sites are all from lowland areas up to 133 m above sea level. Environmental variables in the habitats are described. P. fungosa was represented by a single floatoblast in each of the four northernmost lakes where it was recorded. One of these lakes was in North Norway some 1000 km away from the nearest known sites with living colonies. The presence of large colonies of P. fungosa in some parts of southern Norway and only `single floatoblast lakes' further north is discussed in relation to the equilibrium theory of island biogeography: birds facilitate immigration by carrying floatoblasts and environmental conditions prevent their germination and the development of living colonies. All records of P. casmiana and P. emarginata were from South Norway. Results for P. fruticosa have been published previously. Notes are given on an old and now missing sample from ca. 1900, identified by Lacourt (1968) as Hyalinella punctata – the only record of this species from Norway. 相似文献

High toxicity of the novel bloom-forming species Chattonella ovata (Raphidophyceae) to cultured fish
A toxicological study of an axenic cell line of novel species Chattonella ovata Y. Hara et Chihara (Raphidophyceae) revealed that cultured species of sea bream (Pagrus major), horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus), and yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata) were killed by 4.1–6.8 × 103, 5.4 × 103, and 2.8 × 103 cells/mL, respectively. The sensitivity of the gill lamellae to C. ovata differed among the fish species tested. This finding revealed that C. ovata was highly toxic to the cultured fish. Histological examination showed that edema and hyperplasia of the secondary gill lamellae of red sea bream and horse mackerel occurred when exposed to, or killed by C. ovata, whereas severe damage in the gill lamellae was not observed in yellowtail. Chattonella produced high amounts of superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide, possibly responsible for the fish death observed. Based on the results of this study and occurrence of a red tide by this organism in China in 2001, we consider this organism to be one of the harmful algae in coastal waters. This is the first report demonstrating that C. ovata is highly toxic to fish, and that it produces superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. 相似文献

Summary Immunoassays such as rocket immunoelectrophoresis, western dot blot hybridization, and competitive ELISA analysis were used to estimate and compare homology among fishes (several species), crab, toad, chicken and rodent metallothioneins. The relative abundance of tissue-specific metallothionein in catfish was highest in liver followed by kidney and pancreas like mammalian systems. Immunologically, considerable homology exists among fish metallothioneins, although the extent of homology differs to some extent. No homology was found between fish or chicken metallothioneins. The amphibian (toad) and invertebrate (crab) metallothioneins showed only partial homology with fish metallothioneins in antigenic determinants.Abbreviations MT

Genotyping of 11 microsatellites in 432 offspring from 28 families of the hermaphroditic, freshwater snail Bulinus forskalii detected 10 de novo mutant alleles. This gave an estimated mutation rate of 1.1 × 10–3 per locus per gamete per generation. There was a trend towards repeat length expansion and, unlike most studies, multi-step mutations predominated, suggesting that the microsatellite mutation process does not conform to a strict stepwise mutation model. Interestingly, the ten mutant alleles appear to have arisen from only six independent germline mutation events within the microsatellite array, with seven of them residing in three mutational clusters. Our results extend observations of clustered microsatellite mutations to another taxonomic group and type of mating system, self-fertile gastropods, and provide compelling evidence of premeiotic germline mutations, a phenomenon that could greatly impact upon our understanding of mutation dynamics but which has received little attention. 相似文献

Onion seeds treated with leachates of composts prepared from alfalfa and sunflower stalks, at the dosages of 10% and 20% respectively, were inoculated with Aspergillus niger van Tieghem, causal agent of onion black mold disease. The ability of the leachates to induce the production of antifungal compounds and to control black mold were tested at seedling and set stages. Leachates from both composts were able to reduce disease incidence in sets, but not disease severity in onion seedlings. Extracts from treated seedlings and sets were fractionated by thin layer chromatography for their content of antifungal compounds. There were no significant differences between the fractions of alfalfa and sunflower compost leachates in the inhibition of the mycelium growth of A. niger, with the exception of one fraction. The presence of fluorescent pseudomonads and Pantoae agglomerans [synonym: Erwinia herbicola (Löhnis)] bacteria was determined in both leachates. The population of P. agglomerans was higher in the sunflower compost leachate compared to the alfalfa leachate. The tested strains of both bacteria were able to inhibit mycelium growth of the fungal pathogen in agar tests. This study suggests the possible role of beneficial bacteria in the induction of antifungal compounds in onion against A. niger during seedling and set stages. 相似文献

The exines of pollen grains ofHibbertia stricta (DC.)R. Br. exF. Muell. (Sect.Pleurandra) wear an oily, yellow pollen coat that stains positively for lipids. The pollen is collected by asocial bees, exclusively. The most common floral foragers are members of the genusLasioglossum (subgenusChilalictus;Halictidae) and they harvest pollen via thoracic vibration. As these bees cling to the inflated anthers their pollen smeared bodies come in contact with either of the two wet, nonpapillate stigmas. The stigmas respond positively to cytochemical tests for the presence of esterase immediately following expansion of the corolla, indicating the effective pollination period. The foraging patterns of the bees are narrowly to broadly polylectic. AsH. stricta flowers are nectarless, it is not surprising that bees bearing mixed pollen loads always carry the pollen of at least one nectariferous, coblooming plant. Embryo formation by cultured broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) anthers was best in the pH range of 5.5 to 5.8. Manipulation of the initial medium pH showed, however, that embryos could be recovered throughout the entire pH range tested. Experiments designed to test the influence of anther density on embryo production exhibited an apparent population effect. Comparison of anthers cultured with and without filaments showed a significantly lower level of embryo formation with filaments attached. The importance of anther orientation with the adaxial surface up was also demonstrated. Detailed studies of the effect of temperature on anther response showed the importance of 35°C treatments. Other temperatures and a variety of temperature manipulations were either comparatively ineffective or inhibitory. The duration of 35°C exposure required for optimal response varied widely between 18 and 48 h. Wide variation in plant to plant response was observed despite attempts to optimize the manipulation of physical parameters. Individual plants were identified that reliably formed many thousands of embryos, whereas other plants failed to form embryos under all tested conditions. 相似文献

This work examines the cytogeographical distribution, the morphological characters, and the karyotypes of threeCrepis species endemic to Greece (C. sibthorpiana, C. incana, andC. heldreichiana). C. sibthorpiana is diploid (2n = 2x = 8),C. incana is diploid (2n = 2x = 8) and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 16, 17), andC. heldreichiana is always dekaploid (2n = 10x = 40). The Giemsa positive bands, usually pairs of dots, are mainly centromeric inC. incana, while they are terminal inC. sibthorpiana (on the short arm of all chromosomes) and inC. heldreichiana (on both arms of all chromosomes). Intercalary C-bands are scarce and usually variable within karyotypes, individuals, and species. The most variable karyotype both in Feulgen and Giemsa preparations is that ofC. incana, in which also supernumerary chromosomes were observed, which are polysomic to standard set members. On the basis of morphological and karyological data the evolutionary relationships among the threeCrepis taxa are discussed. 相似文献

Chromosome numbers are reported for 23 species of the genusBunium, distributed mainly in Middle Asia and Transcaucausia. The great diversity of basic chromosome numbers is unusual for a genus ofUmbelliferae: x = 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6. This series obviously has to be interpreted as descending dysploidy. Infraspecific aneuploidy was found in three species, but there are no B-chromosomes or polyploidy. The karyotypes of 18 species are described, using two morphometric chromosome parameters, centromere position and relative length (Table 2), and illustrated (Figs. 2–4). Species vary greatly in their karyotype asymmetry (20.4–45.9%). Chromosome numbers and structures appear to be useful in the karyotaxonomical and biogeographical analysis of the genus. 相似文献

All larvae in the family Papilionidae possess osmeteria, eversible glands that release defensive chemicals upon disturbance. These chemicals have been shown to be repellent to ants, mantids, and other predaceous arthropods with chewing mouthparts. In this study, we demonstrate that the pentatomid Podisus maculiventris,an important predator of the black swallowtail Papilio polyxenes,is capable of piercing the body wall of the caterpillar and consuming body fluids without eliciting osmeterial eversion. Tenebrio molitorlarvae coated with osmeterial secretions of Papilio polyxeneswere universally rejected by Podisus maculiventris,suggesting that the predator is in fact repelled by the swallowtail defensive chemistry. By circumventing the defensive behavior of the caterpillar, the pentatomid is able to utilize an otherwise chemically unsuitable prey species. 相似文献

NW Italy) were examined for the presence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) by culture, IS900 nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and IS1311 PCR restriction endonuclease analysis for strain
characterisation. MAP identification (nested PCR and/or culture) allowed us to detect 32.9% MAP-infected red deer and 22.5%
infected roe deer in the NW Alps and 41.4% MAP infected roe deer in the NW Apennines. On the basis of the polymorphism present
in the IS1311 sequence, all MAP isolates were characterised as cattle strains. Our results show that MAP circulates widely

Summary The spermatozoon of the holothurian Leptosynapta clarki has a small circular head measuring about 3.0 at the greatest diameter, a midpiece containing a single mitochondrion and a tail flagellum measuring between 35 and 45 in length. The acrosomal region contains a granule measuring 0.7 in diameter which consists of electron dense material arranged in concentric lamellae. Five concentric very electron dense lamellae alternate with areas of much less electron dense material in the central region of the granule. This granule rests in an anterior nuclear depression.The nucleus is circular in shape and contains one or two unbound vacuoles which frequently contain a fine granular material. Posteriorly the nucleus is bounded by a large mitochondrion and an occasional Golgi complex. The proximal centriole which contains a lateral arm of dense material lies in a deep fossa projecting into the nucleus. The distal centriole lies posteriorly in the mitochondrial mass and gives rise to nine satellite projections and their Y-shaped connective extensions.The tail contains the 9 + 2 tubule arrangement and tapers at its distal end.This investigation was supported by a National Research Council grant to F.
