Beef cows (n = 294) calving between November and April in six states were used to evaluate the effects of postpartum diet and calf separation on body weight, body condition score (BCS), reproductive performance, and weaning weight of calves. In each state, half of the 48 cows that calved during 60 d were group fed an additional 4.5 kg of a 20% crude protein supplement daily for 28 d starting an average of 30 d post partum (flush). Calves were separated from half of the flush and half of the nonflush cows for 48 h at 14 and 28 d after the beginning of flush. Progesterone was quantified in plasma samples obtained weekly during a 56-d breeding period to assess ovarian luteal activity. The breeding period started at the first calf separation. BCS ranged from 3.3 to 5.6 among states (on a scale of 1 to 9) at the start of the flush but was similar for treatments within a state. There was a state x flush (P < 0.008) effect on body weight at the end of the flush period. Weaning weights were influenced by state x separation x flush (P < 0.06) and were greatest for flush nonseparated calves in five of six states. There were state x flush (P < 0.08) and separation (P < 0.04) effects on ovarian luteal activity at the start of the breeding period. Flush and separation tended to increase ovarian luteal activity. During the breeding period, ovarian luteal activity was influenced only by state but there was a state x separation x flush effect (P < 0.001) on the number of weeks post partum to onset of ovarian luteal activity. Conception rate and days postpartum to conception were not influenced by either separation or flush but were affected by state (P < 0.001). These data indicate that flushing may increase weaning weights of calves and calf separation may hasten the onset of postpartum ovarian luteal activity, but conception rate and days postpartum to conception for cows in thin to moderate body condition were not influenced by the calf separation or flushing treatments.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of separating dairy calves from their mothers at 1 day (early separation) and 14 days (late separation) after birth. Behavioural observations were conducted on 24 Holstein dairy cow–calf pairs during the first 24 h after separation. Before separation, cow–calf pairs were generally inactive. After separation, cows from the late-separation treatment group showed higher rates of calling, movement and placing the head outside the pen, than cows in the early-separation group. Parity did not influence cow behaviour. During the first 2 weeks after calving, cows in the late-separation group (i.e. still with their calves) yielded less milk at milking, a difference at least partly due to the milk consumed by the calf. Milk yields from days 15–150 did not differ between the two groups. After separation, calves in the late-separation group moved and placed their heads outside the pen more often than early-separation calves. During the first 14 days after birth, late-separation calves gained weight at more than three times the rate of those separated early. When introduced to an unfamiliar calf at 6 weeks of age, calves from the late-separation group showed more intense social behaviour towards the unfamiliar calf than did those calves separated early. Thus, the response to separation by both cows and calves increased when calves were separated at 2 weeks rather than 1 day of age, but calves separated at the later age gained more weight and delayed separation appeared to influence the development of calf social behaviour.  相似文献

Trials were conducted in 1980 and 1981 to evaluate the effects of once-daily suckling, twice-daily suckling, 48-h calf removal, and Norgestomet on performance of spring-calving cows and their calves. Eighty-three and 73 Polled Hereford and 29 and 42 Simmental-cross cows were utilized in 1980 and 1981, respectively. Cows were allotted by age, breed, calving date and winter nutrition treatment to one of four groups: 1) once-daily suckle for 24 d starting 11 d before the beginning of the breeding season, 2) twice-daily suckle (same time frame as 1), 3) 48-h calf removal ending immediately before the breeding season, 4) calves remained with cows (controls). One-half.of each group was implanted with Norgestomet from 11 until 2 d before the start of the breeding season. Once- and twice-daily suckling increased (P<0.05) the percentage of noncycling cows showing estrus the first 3 wk after the start of treatment. Pregnancy rates for the breeding season were higher (P<0.1) in the once-daily suckle and 48-h calf removal groups for cows that had not exhibited estrus before the beginning of treatment. Norgestomet increased (P<0.05) the percentage of cows showing estrus within 3 wk after the start of treatment within the 48-h calf-removal and control groups. Milk production was not affected (P>0.1) by suckling treatment. Calf weight gains during suckling treatment were greater (P<0.05) in control and twice-daily suckled calves than in 48-h calf removal or once-daily suckled calves. Suckling treatment did not affect (P>0.1) adjusted weaning weights of calves or frequency and duration of suckling recorded 2 wk after the end of suckling treatment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of age of separation on the behavioural responses of the dairy calf and cow. Calves were separated from their dams 6 h, 1 day, or 4 days after birth (n=9 cow-calf pairs in each of the 3 treatment groups) and behaviour was video and audio taped from 1 h before separation to 21 h after separation. In the hour immediately before separation, we found that the younger calves tended to call and move more in the pen, and spent more time standing than the older calves, but after separation these trends reversed. Calves separated at older ages made significantly more movements in the pen (P<0.05), spent more time standing (P<0.05) and spent more time with the head out of the pen (P<0.01) than calves separated soon after birth. We observed a similar pattern for the cows. Before separation, cows with younger calves moved more frequently about the pen (P<0.05), and called at much higher rates (a mean of 40.7 calls during 40 min for cows on the 6-h treatment, vs. 0.2 calls for cows in the 4-day group; P<0.001). After separation, cows in the 4-day group called at approximately four times the rate of those separated at 6 h or 1 day (P<0.01). Moreover, the calls produced by cows separated later had a significantly higher fundamental frequency (P<0.001) and a lower emphasized harmonic (P<0.02) than the calls of cows separated from calves soon after birth. There was no difference between treatment groups in the other behavioural measures, either before or after separation. Calves separated at older ages tended to require fewer days of treatment for scouring, but calf weight gain and cow milk production did not differ among treatment groups. In conclusion, behavioural responses of both the cow and calf increase in relation to calf age at separation. However, there may be health advantages associated with delayed separation that compensate for the increased behavioural response.  相似文献

Calves in most dairy farms are separated from their dams either immediately or within a few hours after birth, prompting increasing concern of the society for reasons of animal welfare. The aim of this study was to identify systems to maintain cow-calf contact (CCC) that balance the benefits for calf growth and health against the negative impacts on sellable milk and stress at weaning. We tested reuniting cows and calves for 20 min before (Before-group) or 2.5 h after (After-group) morning milking (in Trial 1) or for a 9 h period between the morning and evening milkings (Half-day-group, in Trial 2). In Control-groups, calves were separated from their dam at birth and fed with artificial nipple with tank milk provided daily at 13% (Trial 1) and 14% (Trial 2) of their BW. In both trials, each practice was applied on a group of 14 dam–calf pairs (7 Holstein [Ho] and 7 Montbéliarde [Mo]). All calves were weaned at a BW of at least 100 kg. In Trial 1, the After-group was prematurely stopped when the calves were eight weeks of age as calf growth became limited (340 g/d) due to low milk intakes (2.97 kg/d). During the first eight weeks of lactation, milk yield at the parlour was 29%, 51% and 42% lower in After-, Before- and Half-day-cows respectively compared to Controls. From week 14 to 16 when all calves were separated from their dam, Before-cows still produced 25% less milk than Control-cows while Half-day-cows reached the milk yield of Control-cows within a week. There were no significant differences in milk somatic cell count and in frequency of health disorders (cows and calves) between suckling and Control-groups. Compared to Control-calves, calf growth until weaning was higher in the suckling calves in Trial 1 (861 vs 699 g/d) and similar in Trial 2 (943 vs 929 g/d). At weaning, Before- and Half-day-calves started to vocalise earlier and continued to vocalise longer than Controls. In conclusion, the best compromise between cow milk yield and calf growth is a long period of CCC (9 h) between the morning and evening milkings. Still abrupt weaning stresses both cows and calves even if CCC has been restricted before separation.  相似文献

Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and cortisol concentrations were measured in ten fall calving, Angus cows averaging 38 +/- 8 days postpartum. Calves from five cows were weaned at the beginning of the study. Blood samples were collected at 20 min. intervals for 48 h after weaning and for 8 h on day 4 and day 6 postweaning. Mean serum LH concentrations increased (P<0.01) in weaned cows (W) from 0.55 +/- 0.01 ng/ml at time of calf removal to 1.3 +/- 0.04 ng/ml 48 h afterwards. Comparable LH concentrations for suckled cows (S) were 0.65 +/- 0.08 ng/ml and 0.62 +/- 0.03 ng/ml respectively. Average serum LH concentrations at 48 h after weaning were greater (P<0.01) for W cows than S cows and a treatment by time interaction occurred (P<0.01) with serum LH concentrations increasing (P<0.01) from time of calf removal to 48 h after calf removal in W cows. Frequency of LH peaks increased (P<0.01) in W cows and by 48 h after weaning was greater (P<0.01) in W cows than in S cows. Magnitude of LH peaks did not differ between the two groups. Serum cortisol concentrations were not different between W and S cows except for a transient elevation (P<0.01) in W cows from 7.6 +/- 0.9 ng/ml to 11.9 +/- 1.0 ng/ml 9 to 12 h after calf removal. Since serum LH concentrations were increased in W cows but not in S cows at 48 h and serum cortisol concentrations increased transiently in W cows we suggest that circulating cortisol levels may not be a physiological inhibitor of LH secretion in the suckled postpartum beef cow.  相似文献

Prior research indicates that a SNP at position 305 of exon 2 in the leptin gene affects milk production in dairy cows. Dairy cows with at least one copy of the T allele have been shown to have higher milk production than CC cows. If that effect carries over to beef breeds, it is reasonable to expect that CT and TT beef cows will wean heavier calves than CC beef cows. We tested this hypothesis for a herd of mixed breed cows using anova. Results indicated that both crossbred CT and TT beef cows wean significantly heavier beef calves than CC crossbred beef cows. A lack of observations generally hinders detection of significance in other breeds. However, two other comparisons were found to be significant. The results suggest further investigation into the link between leptin genotype and calf weaning weights. Aside from interest to animal scientists, these results have the potential to alter mating and replacement selection decisions by cow-calf producers, given the importance of weaning weights on profitability.  相似文献

Maternal nutrition affects the development of the fetus and postnatal performance of the calf. Methionine may play a critical role in developmental programming and is likely deficient in beef cows fed low-quality forage. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of metabolizable methionine supply to lactating beef cows during the periconception period on performance of cows, calves, and subsequent offspring. This project involved two consecutive production cycles commencing at calving in which dietary treatments were fed to cows during the periconception period along with measurements on cows and initial calves in Production Cycle 1, and measurements on subsequent calves in Production Cycle 2. Brangus-Angus crossbred lactating beef cows (N = 108; age = 6.4 (2.8) year) were stratified by previous calving date and assigned to one of three supplements: (1) control, molasses plus urea at 2.72 kg/day as fed, (2) fishmeal, 2.27 kg/day molasses plus urea plus 0.33 kg/day as fed of fishmeal, and (3) methionine, 2.72 kg/day of molasses plus urea plus 9.5 g/day of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid. Cows were fed supplements and low-quality limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) hay while grazing dormant bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) pastures during the 115-day periconception period from December 2014 to April 2015 in Production Cycle 1 only. Body weight change and milk yield of cows were measured during the periconception period in Production Cycle 1. Body weight of calves was measured at birth and weaning in both production cycles. Following weaning in Production Cycle 2, eight subsequent steer calves per treatment were individually housed for a 42-day metabolism experiment. Treatment did not affect (P > 0.10) BW change of cows, but cows fed methionine tended (P = 0.09) to produce more energy-corrected milk than control and fishmeal. Treatment did not affect (P > 0.10) 205-day adjusted weaning weight of calves in either production cycle. During the metabolism experiment, subsequent calves from dams fed fishmeal and methionine gained faster (P < 0.05) and had greater (P < 0.05) gain:feed than control calves. Methionine calves tended (P = 0.06) to have greater apparent total tract NDF and ADF digestibility and lesser (P < 0.05) blood glucose concentration than control and fishmeal calves. These data indicate that maternal methionine supply during the periconception period plays an important role in programming future performance of the offspring.  相似文献

In the dual purpose milk/beef production system practised in Mexico, the cows are milked once a day in the presence of the calf and then the calf suckles for the next 1-8 h. It was hypothesised that the imposition of milking and suckling in close succession contributes to the long postpartum anoestrous periods experienced by cows in this system. Therefore, separating these two inhibiting factors, by delaying the start of suckling after milking would lower the impact on the hypothalamus-hypophysial axis and allow it to recover more readily. This hypothesis was tested in two experiments using Bostaurus x Bosindicus cows which weighed 541.3 +/- 12.7 kg (mean +/- S.E.M.; experiment 1) and 537.8 +/- 10.6 kg (experiment 2) and had a body condition score of 5-6 (scale 1-9) at calving. The cows and calves were maintained on separate pastures and the cows were offered concentrate supplements. Experiment 1 was conducted in the dry season and cows were offered a daily supplement of 3 kg of 17% crude protein (CP) concentrates plus 1 kg molasses per cow. Experiment 2 was conducted during the wet season and the nutritional supplement consisted of only 1 kg of 17% CP plus 1 kg molasses per cow per day. Each experiment lasted for the first 100 days postpartum and the cows were not mated during this time. Cows were hand-milked once a day in the presence of the calf to stimulate milk let-down. In experiment 1, 30 multiparous cows were assigned at random by date of calving, to one of three treatments: controlled suckling (CS; n = 10), delayed suckling (DS; n = 10) and prolonged delayed suckling (PDS; n = 10). The suckling period on all treatments lasted for 2 h and started at 0 h (CS), 4 h (DS) or 8 h (PDS) after milking. In experiment, 34 multiparous cows were assigned at random to three treatments: CS (n = 11), PDS (n = 11) or prolonged delayed short suckling (PDSS; n = 12), in this last treatment the suckling period was reduced to only 30 min. In both experiments, one quarter of the udder of cows on treatment CS was not milked but all the udder was milked on the other treatments. Body weights of cows and calves and cow milk yields were recorded. Weekly blood samples were collected for plasma progesterone assay to detect the first postpartum corpus luteum. Data were analysed by ANOVA and chi-square test. Cows in experiment 1 had similar weight changes during the first 100 days postpartum. Milk production was higher for DS (8.0 +/- 0.7 kg per day) and PDS (7.0 +/- 0.5 kg per day) cows than for CS (5.2 +/- 0.7 kg per day) cows (P < 0.01). Calf daily gain was greater (P < 0.05) for PDS (827 +/- 35 g per day), than CS (702 +/- 26 g per day) or DS (715 +/- 29 g per day). The proportion of cows ovulating during the first 100 days postpartum were 50.0, 70.0 and 100.0%, for CS, DS and PDS, respectively (P < 0.05). The intervals from calving to first significant rise in progesterone were 70.4 +/- 1.6, 72.1 +/- 1.3 and 64.6 +/- 1.5 days for CS, DS and PDS (P > 0.05), respectively. In experiment 2, cow body weight during the first 100 days postpartum did not differ between treatments. Milk production was not significantly different between CS (7.3 +/- 1.0 kg per day) and PDSS (6.8 +/- 1.0 kg per day), but was higher (P < 0.05) for CS than PDS (5.2 +/- 1.0 kg per day). Calf daily gain was lower for CS (576 +/- 31 g per day; P < 0.05) than PDS (779 +/- 38 g per day) and PDSS (780 +/- 20 g per day). The proportion of cows ovulating was higher (P < 0.05) for treatments PDS (100%) and CS (81.8%) than PDSS (50%). Calving to first ovulation interval was shorter (P < 0.05) for PDS (57.3 +/- 4.5 days) and PDSS (49.7 +/- 3.0 days) cows than CS (72.1 +/- 3.5 days) cows. It is concluded that delaying suckling for 8 h after milking, increases the proportion of cows ovulating within 100 days of calving, shortened the calving to first ovulation interval and improved calf performance without adversely affecting cow milk yield or body weight change.  相似文献

The effect of Synchro-mate-B (SMB) was measured on the estrous response and the establishment of cyclicity using different calf stimuli. Multiparous Zebu cows, were divided in three groups. In the first, 32 animals were treated with SMB leaving the calves present (SMB+CP). In the second, 33 cows were treated with SMB and calves partially removed (fence-line contact) for 48h (SMB+CPR). In the third group (n=33), cows received SMB and calves were removed for 48h (SMB+CCR) with no visual or olfactory contact. A control group (CG, n=33) involved neither SMB or calf separation. Blood samples for progesterone assessment were obtained at 11 and 4d prior to SMB treatment and on days 7 and 11 after the average return to estrous for each group. All animals were observed continuously for mounting activity during 72h after SMB implant removal. A significant difference (P<0.05) in estrous response was found between SMB-treated and non-treated animals, regardless of calf management (56 versus 8%, respectively). Cows with SMB+CCR and SMB+CPR came into estrous sooner (P<0.05) (26.5+/-2.6 and 18.1+/-4.94h, respectively), than those that remained with their calf present (40.4+/-12.8h). Cows with SMB+CCR displayed longer (P<0.05) periods of mounting behavior (13.0+/-4.4h) in comparison with SMB+CPR and SMB+CP (7.4+/-1.8 and 8.1+/-4.0h), respectively. Furthermore, 84% (P<0.05) of the cows in the SMB+CCR had high concentrations of progesterone after mounting behavior was displayed, in comparison with 68 and 54% in the other two groups, respectively. No difference was found (P>0.05) in the number of mounts per hour in estrous. It was concluded that: (1) SMB increases the number of cows that display estrous; (2) temporary weaning shortens the period from SMB implant withdrawal to mounting activity, and (3) SMB+CCR, increases the length of sexual receptivity and the number of cows that continue to cycle.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to record the oxytocin (OT) release during milking (M) without or with calf presence, suckling (S) and finally calf removal just before the next milking in cows during postpartum or early lactation periods. Furthermore, the release of OT was examined during S and M in unknown surroundings (parlour). A total of 20 Brown Swiss cows kept under loose housing environment were used in our experiment. In both periods, the cows were milked twice daily at 07.00 and 18.00h and suckled three times daily at 09.00, 14.00 and 20.00h in the stall (tie housing). In the postpartum period, 13 cows were suckled and milked in the presence of their calves in the stall for the first 5 days of postpartum. Five from seven primiparous cows were additionally suckled by their own calves in the parlour on day 5 at 20.00h. On day 6, calves were separated and moved from mothers to the calf barn 10min before morning M. After evening milking cows were relocated to the herd within the same stable and milked in the parlour for a period of 4 weeks without contact to their calf. For control, additional seven primiparous cows without calf presence (not suckled) were also milked in the tie housing. In the early lactation period, suckled cows were moved back to the tie housing 2 days before the start of two consecutive days of S by their own calves and milking. Afterwards, 10min before M calves were separated again. Before S, two consecutive M were considered as controls. Results: The S stimulus during postpartum resulted in a higher OT release as compared with M in the calf presence and M after calf separation but not during M of not suckled cows. S in parlour reduced OT release. However, when not suckled primiparous cows were first milked in parlour, OT release was more reduced and in some cows total inhibition was observed. In early lactation during the first S, release of OT was lower than during control M, but increased gradually with repeated S and reached a maximum already on the second day. After two S, during evening M, the M related OT release was reduced as compared with controls. Calf removal 10min before M reduced OT release as compared with control M or M in calf presence. In conclusion, the calf presence and its removal can negatively influence OT secretion during M. Conditioning to machine milking caused a short-term reduction of OT release during first suckling, which normalised within 1 day.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine whether presence of the calf during suckling inhibition influences the response to estrus synchronization in beef cows. Angus or Hereford cows (n=89) were administered Syncro-Mate-B (SMB), which consisted of a 6-mg norgestomet ear implant (in situ 9 d) in conjunction with 5 mg of estradiol valerate and 3 mg (im) of norgestomet. Cows were allotted by breed, body condition, stage of the estrous cycle, parity and date of parturition to 1 of 3 treatments: 48-h calf removal; ad libitum suckling; or inhibition of suckling with a nose tag for 48 h. Calves were weighed at time of SMB implant removal, 48 h later and at weaning. Cows were mated via AI approximately 12 h after detection of estrus during a 30-d period after implant removal followed by a natural service period of 35 d. At 48 h after implant removal, calf removal and nose tag calves had lost an average of 3.6 and 0.9 kg, respectively, while the suckled calves gained 1.8 kg (P < 0.01). Mean calf weight at weaning did not differ among treatments. Synchronized estrous response (within 5 d of implant removal) was not different among treatments. Pregnancy rate for cows exhibiting a synchronized estrus (5 d AI) for calf removal, nose tag and suckled cows was 76, 48 and 48%, respectively (P>0.10). Treatment did not affect the 30-d AI or overall 65-d pregnancy rate. In this study, there were no differences observed in the percentage of synchronized or pregnant cows following suckling inhibition by either a nose tag or calf removal. Transient reductions of calf body weight during the 48-h calf removal period did occur in both the nose tag and calf removal groups.  相似文献

Ten primiparous crossbred cows were assigned to two dietary groups at calving. One group received 120% and the other group received 80% of the National Research Council (NRC) recommended allowance of dietary energy for primiparous cows. At 60 days postpartum, calves were removed from their dams. Blood samples were collected from the cows at 15-min intervals for 8 hr beginning at the time of calf removal and again 24 hr, 48 hr and 72 hr after calf removal. At 72 hr after calf removal, all cows were given 200 ug GnRH intravenously. At calf removal, serum LH concentrations were higher (P<0.01) for cows on 120% (0.9 +/- 0.03 ng/ml) compared to cows on 80% (0.5 +/- 0.03 ng/ml) of recommendations. Serum LH concentrations increased (1.6 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, P<0.01) by 24 hr in cows on the highenergy diet. In contrast, a similar increase was not observed in cows on the low-energy diet until 48 hr after calf removal (1.4 +/- 0.2 ng/ml, P<0.01). These contrasting patterns in serum LH concentrations resulted in a diet by time interaction (P<0.01). Serum LH concentrations increased in both dietary energy groups following GnRH injection, but the response was greater (P<0.01) in cows on the low-energy diet compared to the cows fed the high-energy diet. These results indicate that inadequate dietary energy delays the LH response to calf removal and increases the LH response to exogenous GnRH.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of calf removal (CR) and gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) administration on the duration of the postpartum anoestrous period in suckled beef cows. Experiment 1 involved 20 multiparous suckled cows that were assigned to each of two treatments on Day 61 postpartum: (i) unlimited access to their calves (C; n=10) and (ii) calf removal for a period of 96 h (CR96, n=10). Experiment 2 involved 24 multiparous cows that were assigned to each of two treatments on Day 63 postpartum: (i) CR96 (n=12); and (ii) CR96 plus 250 microg of GnRH administered on the day before calf return (CR96+GnRH, n=12). Experiment 3 was a 3x2 factorial experiment, involving 48 multiparous cows assigned to the experiment on Day 58 postpartum. The factors were C, CR96 and calf removal for 144 h (CR144), and 0 or 250 microg GnRH administered on the day prior calf return. In Experiment 1, the number of cows that ovulated within 12 days of calf removal was higher (P<0.05) in CR96 group (3/9) compared to the C group (0/10). In Experiment 2, all 12 cows in the CR96+GnRH group ovulated. In contrast only 4/12 cows in the CR96 group ovulated in response to calf removal. The diameter of the ovulatory follicle tended (P=0.06) to be smaller in CR96+GnRH cows (9.8 +/- 0.3 mm) than in CR96 cows (11.3 +/- 0.9 mm). The maximum diameter attained by the corpus luteum (CL) also tended (P=0.08) to be smaller for cows in the CR96+GnRH than for cows in the CR96 group (12.1 +/- 2.4 mm versus 16.7 +/- 7.5 mm, respectively). Plasma progesterone concentrations 12 days after calf removal tended (P=0.06) to be lower in CR96+GnRH cows than in CR96 cows (0.66 +/- 0.1 ng/ml versus 2.00 +/- 1.1 ng/ml, respectively). Few cows in the CR96+GnRH group regained normal cyclical activity and the interval from onset of calf removal to conception was longer (P<0.05) compared to cows in the CR group (52.2 +/- 5.7 days versus 20.0 +/- 6.6 days). In Experiment 3, 5/8 cows on the CR144 group and all 8 cows in the CR144+GnRH group ovulated. However, the interval from CR to conception was similar for all treatments. Early weaning may be used in beef cattle production to improve reproduction rates in range conditions. However, weaning causes a stress response in cows, which may be especially strong in early weaning management, as the bond between the cow and the calf is still strong. We hypothesized that weaning calves in two steps, with the aid of anti-sucking devices (nose flaps) would reduce the behavioural stress response in the cows separated from their calves 2 months after parturition. We compared the behaviour frequency and weight change in cows that were weaned abruptly, by separation of the calf on day 0 of the study, or in two steps, consisting of the use of anti-sucking nose flaps for 5 days before permanent separation; a third group was not weaned to serve as control. Thirty-six crossbred multiparous Aberdeen Angus×Hereford cows and their calves (n=12/treatment) were managed in three paddocks with similar pasture availability, with four dyads from each treatment per paddock. Cows’ behaviour was observed by direct visual instantaneous sampling, at 10 min intervals from days −3 to 11. Weaning the calves in two steps clearly attenuated the behavioural stress response observed in abruptly weaned cows, which included reductions in grazing and lying, and increases in pacing, walking and vocalizing. Our results corroborate those previously shown for cows nursing older calves, and indicate that step weaning can reduce the behavioural stress response of cows at weaning, even when the calf is weaned shortly after birth, when the bond between the cow and calf is still very strong.  相似文献

Information on weaning techniques in the tropics is scarce, particularly regarding the long-term effect of temporary early cow–calf separation or restricted suckling. Therefore, we studied the effects of these two handling practices on well-being and performance at 150 days postpartum in fifteen zebu cow–calf pairs randomly assigned to three treatments. Continuous suckling (CS) where calves remained with their dams from birth to weaning; restricted suckling (RS) calves were allowed to suckle 30 min/day from Day 34 until weaning at Day 150 and kept separated the rest of the time; temporary separation (TS) calves were separated for 72 h from their dams from Day 33 to 36 but remained with their dams the rest of the time. Blood samples and behavioral data were collected on Days 32–36 (1st period) and 149–153 (2nd period). In the 1st period, a greater percentage of RS and TS calves were observed close to the fence line (< 10 m) that separated them from their dams (P < 0.0001) and vocalized more than CS calves (P < 0.0001), while in the 2nd period, RS calves had the highest cortisol concentration and vocalization rate (P < 0.05). Similarly, during the 1st period, a greater percentage of RS and TS cows were observed close to the fence line than CS cows (P < 0.0001), with TS cows vocalizing the most (P = 0.001). In the 2nd period, RS cows had greater cortisol concentration than TS (P = 0.037) and CS cows (P = 0.003). More TS and CS cows than RS were observed close to the fence line (P = 0.03 and P = 0.05). On Day 150, TS calves and cows vocalized more than RS and CS animals (P < 0.0001). Before calf–cow separation, 27 out of 45 cows were cycling (CS = 10; RS = 6; TS = 11). After separation, 12 of the remaining 18 cows resumed ovarian activity (CS = 3; RS = 5; TS = 4), and all cows were cycling after estrous synchronization treatment. The pregnancy rate was similar between CS, RS, and TS (60, 53, and 60% respectively). In conclusion, temporary separation increased calf distress response to definitive weaning even four months later, while restricted suckling seemed to reduce it.  相似文献

Statistically significant differences were observed in the population density of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans irritans (L.), on different breeds of beef cattle. The European breed Chianina had a population density of horn flies generally less than or equal to 50% than that of the British cattle breeds (Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red Poll) and another European breed (Charolais). Generally, no significant difference existed among numbers of horn flies on Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red Poll cows in 1988 or among Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red Poll cows in 1989. Factors other than color appeared to be involved in the selective process between the horn fly and its host. Population densities on two white European breeds (Charolais and Chianina) were significantly different on all weekly intervals except for 4 wk in both 1988 and 1989. No significant difference existed among Charolais and British breeds except during 4 wk in 1988 and 3 wk in 1989. When weaning weights of all calves were adjusted for the effects of age to 205 d, sex of calf, and age of dam, the indirect effect of the horn fly on weaning weight showed a significant linear regression. Each 100 flies per cow caused a reduction of 8.1 kg in calf weaning weight. Cows within each breed with low numbers of horn flies weaned significantly heavier calves than cows with higher numbers of horn flies.  相似文献

Milk intake data were collected at 4-week intervals from Belgian Blue double-muscled (BBDM) suckling calves up to 16 weeks after birth. Dams were fed at 100%, 90%, 80% or 70% of their energy requirements during a 140-day indoor period from the beginning of December to the end of April (restriction period). Afterwards, cows were turned out on pasture (re-alimentation period). Mean calving date was 3 June, but parturitions were spread over the year. A total of 521 individual milk intake (IMI) and 120 average daily milk intake (AMI, mean of IMI) records were collected. IMI amounted to 7.0 ± 2.2 kg/day and was not affected by energy level during the indoor period. It was highest in May and June. Calves born out of multiparous cows consumed more milk than those born out of primiparous cows (7.4 v. 6.2 kg per day; P = 0.001), while intake tended to be higher in female than in male calves (7.2 v. 6.8 kg per day; P = 0.044). Dam age at calving, parity, post partum weight and body condition were only weakly correlated with AMI (r 0.4). AMI was correlated with pre-weaning live-weight gain (r = 0.807) and weaning weight (r = 0.783), with a slightly higher correlation for male than for female calves. Daily live-weight gain during the suckling period was increased by 79 g per extra kg daily milk intake on average, and by 86 and 74 g, respectively, for male and female calves. Calf solid feed intake was low, even when milk intake was low. In terms of net energy intake, milk was only substituted for solid feed by 29%. It can be concluded from the calf intake that milk production in BBDM cows is comparable with that of cows from other beef breeds, but its variation is considerable, complicating an accurate estimation.  相似文献

Current trends in the beef industry focus on selecting production traits with the purpose of maximizing calf weaning weight; however, such traits may ultimately decrease overall post-weaning productivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of actual milk yield in mature beef cows on their offspring’s dry matter intake (DMI), BW, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) during a ~75-day backgrounding feeding trial. A period of 24-h milk production was measured with a modified weigh-suckle-weigh technique using a milking machine. After milking, cows were retrospectively classified as one of three milk yield groups: Lower (6.57±1.21 kg), Moderate (9.02±0.60 kg) or Higher (11.97±1.46 kg). Calves from Moderate and Higher milk yielding dams had greater (P<0.01) BW from day 0 until day 75 at the end of the backgrounding feeding phase; however, day 75 BW were not different (P=0.36) between Lower and Moderate calves. Body weight gain was greater (P=0.05) for Lower and Moderate calves from the day 0 BW to day 35 BW compared with Higher calves. Overall DMI was lower (P=0.03) in offspring from Lower and Moderate cows compared with their Higher milking counterparts. With the decreased DMI, FCR was lower (P=0.03) from day 0 to day 35 in calves from Lower and Moderate milk yielding dams. In addition, overall FCR was lower (P=0.02) in calves from Lower and Moderate milk yielding dams compared with calves from Higher milk yielding dams. However, calving of Lower milk yielding dams had an increased (P=0.04) efficiency from a negative RFI value compared with calves from Moderate and Higher milking dams. Results from this study suggest that increased milk production in beef cows decreases feed efficiency during a 75-day post-weaning, backgrounding period of progeny.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the pituitary and ovarian responses to 72 hr calf removal (CR) and/or gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) in beef cows. Forty-eight Angus, Simmental, and Charolais crossbred cows in moderate body condition were allotted to an experiment of 2 x 2 factorial design involving CR and GnRH. At 30 to 32 days postpartum, calves were removed for 72 hr from the CR and CR plus GnRH groups. All cows were injected (i.m.) with saline or 200 mug of GnRH at 33 to 35 days postpartum. Saline or GnRH was injected 5 hr before calf return. Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured in blood samples collected every 30 min for 5.5 hr beginning 30 min prior to injection of saline or GnRH. Plasma progesterone was measured in blood samples collected 0, 7, and 14 days after GnRH injection and 7 and 14 days following the first detected estrus. There were no differences (P>0.05) in the interval to peak LH release or the magnitude of the LH release between the GnRH and CR plus GnRH groups; however, the GnRH induced release of LH was greater (P<0.05) over time when preceded by CR. Plasma progesterone concentrations were increased on day 7, compared to day 0, after GnRH injection in 57% and 50% of the animals in the GnRH and CR plus GnRH groups, respectively. However, behavioral estrus was not observed in any of the cows between days 0 and 7 after GnRH injection. A higher (P<0.05) percentage of the cows injected with GnRH formed luteal tissue compared to cows injected with saline; however, the luteal lifespan following GnRH injection was decreased relative to the luteal lifespan following the first observed estrus. The mean interval from calving to first estrus was decreased (P<0.05) by 17 days in the CR group relative to the other groups, and calf removal had no detrimental effect on milk production at 80 days postpartum or on calf weaning weights at approximately 7 months of age. In summary, 72 hr CR decreased the postpartum interval and increased the pituitary responsiveness to GnRH. Pretreatment with 72 hr CR did not alter circulating progesterone concentrations or luteal lifespan of corpora lutea induced by GnRH.  相似文献
