Sensory flooding, particularly during auditory stimulation, is a common problem for patients with schizophrenia. The functional consequences of this impairment during cross-modal attention tasks, however, are unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine how auditory distraction differentially affects task-associated response during visual attention in patients and healthy controls. To that end, 21 outpatients with schizophrenia and 23 healthy comparison subjects performed a visual attention task in the presence or absence of distracting, environmentally relevant “urban” noise while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3T. The task had two conditions (difficult and easy); task-related neural activity was defined as difficult – easy. During task performance, a significant distraction (noise or silence) by group (patient or control) interaction was observed in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, right hippocampus, left temporoparietal junction, and right fusiform gyrus, with patients showing relative hypoactivation during noise compared to controls. In patients, the ability to recruit the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during the task in noise was negatively correlated with the effect of noise on reaction time. Clinically, the ability to recruit the fusiform gyrus during the task in noise was negatively correlated with SANS affective flattening score, and hippocampal recruitment during the task in noise was positively correlated with global functioning. In conclusion, schizophrenia may be associated with abnormalities in neural response during visual attention tasks in the presence of cross-modal noise distraction. These response differences may predict global functioning in the illness, and may serve as a biomarker for therapeutic development.  相似文献

The features of the spatial organization of bioelectric potentials in the cases of successful and unsuccessful creative imagination (refusal or poor quality of the product) under conditions of informational oversaturation. Two groups of subjects were compared: professionals (23 healthy students of the Department of Graphic Arts) and non-professionals (34 persons whose specialties were not linked with systematic visual imagination). During the experiments, the subjects were asked to mentally create a visual image based on two simple graphic elements, a right angle and a diagonal; after recording the EEG, they had to draw the image on paper and give it a title. The total number of elements exceeded 7 ± 2; hence, information processing at the conscious level was impossible, which caused the necessity of involving the mechanisms of unconscious information processing. The quality of the created product was evaluated with regard to the degree of success of performing the task and the features of spatial EEG organization. The EEG was recorded from 24 scalp sites of a subject using a SIT-EEG portable telemetric device. In the case of the successful performance of the task by professionals, the parameters of spatial organization of bioelectric potentials, i.e., spatial synchronization (linear processes) and spatial disorder (non-linear process) were strengthened compared to the base-line level in the frontal temporal areas of the right hemisphere and parietal occipital areas of the left hemisphere. Conversely, in the nonprofessionals, these parameters increased in the frontal temporal areas of the left hemisphere and parietal occipital areas of the right hemisphere. In the case a task was not successfully performed by the professionals, the spatial disorder of bioelectric potentials increased in all the cortical areas; in the nonprofessionals, only weak changes were observed. In all situations, the groups differed also in the parameters of coherence (Coh), spectral power (Sp) of bioelectric potentials, and informational energy, which reflects the level of expenditure of the brain’s energy for information processing. The evidence obtained is interpreted in terms of electroencephalographic correlates of successful task performance by professionals and nonprofessionals, i.e., their creative imagination under the conditions of informational over-saturation.  相似文献

Nicotine improves performance on several cognitive and sensorimotor tasks. The neuronal mechanisms associated with these changes in performance are, however, largely unknown. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the effect of nicotine on neuronal response in nineteen healthy subjects while they performed an auditory-paced finger tapping task. Subjects performed the task, after receiving either a nicotine patch or placebo treatment, in a single blind, crossover design. Compared to placebo, nicotine treatment increased response in the cerebellar vermis. Increased vermal activity, in the absence of changes in other task-related regions suggests specificity in nicotine’s effects.  相似文献

The interruptive effect of painful experimental stimulation on cognitive processes is a well-known phenomenon. This study investigated the influence of pain duration on the negative effects of pain on cognition. Thirty-four healthy volunteers performed a rapid serial visual presentation task (RSVP) in which subjects had to detect (visual detection task) and count the occurrence of a target letter (working memory task) in two separate sessions while being stimulated on the left volar forearm with either short (2 sec) or long (18 sec) painful heat stimuli of equal subjective intensity. The results show that subjects performed significantly worse in the long pain session as indexed by decreased detection and counting performance. Interestingly, this effect on performance was also observed during control trials of the long pain session in which participants did not receive any painful stimulation. Moreover, subjects expected long painful stimulation to have a greater impact on their performance and individual expectation correlated with working memory performance. These findings suggest that not only the length of painful stimulation but also its expected ability to impair cognitive functioning might influence the interruptive function of pain. The exact relevance of expectation for the detrimental effects of pain on cognitive processes needs to be explored in more detail in future studies.  相似文献

The allocation of attention modulates negative emotional processing in the amygdala. However, the role of passive exposure time to emotional signals in the modulation of amygdala activity during active task performance has not been examined. In two functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments conducted in two different groups of healthy human subjects, we examined activation in the amygdala due to cued anticipation of painful stimuli while subjects performed a simple continuous performance task (CPT) with either a fixed or a parametrically varied trial duration. In the first experiment (N = 16), engagement in the CPT during a task with fixed trial duration produced the expected attenuation of amygdala activation, but close analysis suggested that the attenuation occurred during the period of active engagement in CPT, and that amygdala activity increased proportionately during the remainder of each trial, when subjects were passively exposed to the pain cue. In the second experiment (N = 12), the duration of each trial was parametrically varied, and we found that amygdala activation was linearly related to the time of passive exposure to the anticipatory cue. We suggest that amygdala activation during negative anticipatory processing depends directly on the passive exposure time to the negative cue.  相似文献

Background

Neuroticism is a personality component frequently found in anxious and depressive psychiatric disorders. The influence of neuroticism on negative emotions could be due to its action on stimuli related to fear and sadness, but this remains debated. Our goal was thus to better understand the impact of neuroticism through verbal and physiological assessment in response to stimuli inducing fear and sadness as compared to another negative emotion (disgust).

Methods

Fifteen low neurotic and 18 high neurotic subjects were assessed on an emotional attending task by using film excerpts inducing fear, disgust, and sadness. We recorded skin conductance response (SCR) and corrugator muscle activity (frowning) as indices of emotional expression.

Results

SCR was larger in high neurotic subjects than in low neurotics for fear relative to sadness and disgust. Moreover, corrugator activity and SCR were larger in high than in low neurotic subjects when fear was induced.

Conclusion

After decades of evidence that individuals higher in neuroticism experience more intense emotional reactions to even minor stressors, our results indicate that they show greater SCR and expressive reactivity specifically to stimuli evoking fear rather than to those inducing sadness or disgust. Fear processing seems mainly under the influence of neuroticism. This modulation of autonomic activity by neurotics in response to threat/fear may explain their increased vulnerability to anxious psychopathologies such as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).  相似文献

The influence of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by cellular phones on preparatory slow brain potentials (SP) was studied in two different experimental tasks: In the first, healthy male human subjects had to perform simple self-paced finger movements to elicit a Bereitschaftspotential; in the second, they performed a complex and cognitive demanding visual monitoring task (VMT). Both tasks were performed with and without EMF exposure in counterbalanced order. Whereas subjects' performance did not differ between the EMF exposure conditions, SP parameters were influenced by EMF in the VMT: EMF exposure effected a significant decrease of SPs at central and temporo-parieto-occipital brain regions, but not at the frontal one. In the simple finger movement task, EMF did not affect the Bereitschaftspotential. Bioelectromagnetics 19:384–387, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded in a recognition memory task in 5 healthy subjects and an amnesic patient. A list of high-imagery words with low probability in everyday language was presented visually for 200 ms each. A second list, consisting of 50% previously presented (`old') words and 50% `new' words was presented immediately after the first list. Old/new distinction was determined by the subject's motor response. For each subject single trial analysis of ERPs was performed. In each healthy subjects, correct old/new distinction was associated with significant ERP differences from 500 to 900 ms after stimulus onset. It was, therefore, assumed that task and recording procedures were appropriate for the study of ERPs with recognition memory. The main finding is a dissociation between brain activity and behaviour with old/new distinction in the patient with amnesic syndrome. Frequently, the patient incorrectly classified previously shown words (`old' words) to be presented for the first time (`new'). But ERP showed that brain processing of `old' words which had incorrectly been classified to be `new' is different from correctly classified new words. ERP differences were significant between 900 and 1200 ms after stimulus presentation. These data indicate preserved memory functions which are not assessed at the behavioural level in the memory recognition task.  相似文献

Spatial and frequency EEG characteristics of two groups of healthy adult subjects were examined in two series of experiments, which differed in conditions of the second cognitive task in a trial. The first task was the same in the two series: subjects had to evaluate size relationship between two closely spaced circles. The second task successively presented in trials of the first series consisted in the recognition of words/pseudowords, and in the second series, subjects had to localize a target letter in a matrix. It was assumed that the cognitive performance in the first series predominantly involved the ventral visual system, whereas during task performance in the second series, predominant involvement of the ventral and dorsal visual systems alternated. Multichannel EEG fragments recorded prior to the presentation of the task pairs were analyzed. Analysis of variance of the EEG spectral power revealed the generalized significant effect of the factor of the second task in the pair for delta band and lower beta subband, the power being higher in the first series. Factor brain hemisphere had a significant effect for the alpha band in the occipital area, the spectral power being lower in the left hemisphere for both experimental series. The task x hemisphere interaction was significant in the temporal cortical areas for the EEG power in alpha2 band, i.e., the predominant involvement of the ventral visual system was associated with stronger asymmetry of alpha2 rhythm and lower spectral power in this band in the left temporal area. Thus, the character of the forthcoming cognitive activity was shown to be reflected in spatio-frequency characteristics of the preceding EEG.  相似文献

The awareness model of biofeedback suggests that training teaches new skills or enhances performance at old skills, while the cognitive or feed-forward models suggest that biofeedback brings attention to the response of interest but does not actually increase task skill. In a test of the predictions made by these models, subjects were tested on one or more cross-modal matching tasks, provided brief training, and retested on the task(s). Thirty subjects participated in integer-matching tasks in which they were instructed to produce various levels of frontalis activity corresponding to the levels of a ratio scale. Forty-five subjects participated in a tone-matching task in which they tried to match their frontalis tension to the pitch of a tone. The results indicated that the groups receiving biofeedback training improved at the more difficult integer task and at the tone task. Subjects performed better on the integer tasks than at the tone task. Our findings suggest that an awareness model accounts for changes occurring during biofeedback training. However, an awareness model may be applicable only for tasks of moderate difficulty; for relatively easy tasks, a feed-forward model may be more appropriate. The clinical utility of cross-modal matching tasks is also described. This paper is based on a thesis conducted by the second author under the direction of the first author. This experiment was designed as a test of the view that the human heart rate (HR) deceleration response can be brought under voluntary control, when some form of exteroceptive feedback is available. Sixteen female volunteers were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group received instructions to decrease their HR plus a continuous negative (failure) binary feedback, while the second group received only the instructions. Each subject was given four sessions of HR deceleration training. Two identical tests were presented, one before and the other after the series of training sessions. These tests were divided into two parts. In the first part, subjects attempted to decrease their HR while undergoing an ischemic arm pain stress. In the second part, subjects performed a 40-trial HR discrimination task. The results indicate that all subjects decrease HR during both rest and voluntary control periods within each training session, but there are no significant group differences, no improvement in HR deceleration control over the four training sessions, and no difference in performance between rest and voluntary control periods. Similarly HR, blood pressure (BP), and the HR×BP product levels during the ischemic stress condition and the HR discrimination performance do not show group differences. It is suggested that the HR deceleration response may not meet the criteria generally applied to the definition of a voluntary response.  相似文献

Muscle fatigue alters neuromuscular responses. This may lead to increased sensitivity to perturbations and possibly to subsequent injury risk. We studied the effects of muscle fatigue on movement stability during a repetitive upper extremity task. Twenty healthy young subjects performed a repetitive work task, similar to sawing, synchronized with a metronome before and after performing each of two fatiguing tasks. The first fatigue task (LIFT) primarily fatigued the shoulder flexor muscles, while the second fatigue task (SAW) fatigued all of the muscles of the arm. Subjects performed each task in random order on two different days at least seven days apart. Instantaneous mean EMG frequencies (IMNF) decreased over both fatiguing tasks indicating that subjects did experience significant muscle fatigue. The slopes of the IMNF over time and the decreases in maximum force measurements demonstrated that the LIFT fatigue task successfully fatigued the shoulder flexors to a greater extent than any other muscle. On average, subjects exhibited more locally stable shoulder movements after the LIFT fatigue task (p=0.035). They also exhibited more orbitally stable shoulder (p=0.021) and elbow (p=0.013) movements after the SAW fatigue task. Subjects also had decreased cocontraction at the wrist post-fatigue for both tasks (p=0.001) and at the shoulder (p<0.001) for the LIFT fatigue task. Therefore, increased dynamic stability of these repeated movements cannot be explained by increased muscle cocontraction. Possible alternative mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Avoidance behavior is a critical component of many psychiatric disorders, and as such, it is important to understand how avoidance behavior arises, and whether it can be modified. In this study, we used empirical and computational methods to assess the role of informational feedback and ambiguous outcome in avoidance behavior. We adapted a computer-based probabilistic classification learning task, which includes positive, negative and no-feedback outcomes; the latter outcome is ambiguous as it might signal either a successful outcome (missed punishment) or a failure (missed reward). Prior work with this task suggested that most healthy subjects viewed the no-feedback outcome as strongly positive. Interestingly, in a later version of the classification task, when healthy subjects were allowed to opt out of (i.e. avoid) responding, some subjects (“avoiders”) reliably avoided trials where there was a risk of punishment, but other subjects (“non-avoiders”) never made any avoidance responses at all. One possible interpretation is that the “non-avoiders” valued the no-feedback outcome so positively on punishment-based trials that they had little incentive to avoid. Another possible interpretation is that the outcome of an avoided trial is unspecified and that lack of information is aversive, decreasing subjects’ tendency to avoid. To examine these ideas, we here tested healthy young adults on versions of the task where avoidance responses either did or did not generate informational feedback about the optimal response. Results showed that provision of informational feedback decreased avoidance responses and also decreased categorization performance, without significantly affecting the percentage of subjects classified as “avoiders.” To better understand these results, we used a modified Q-learning model to fit individual subject data. Simulation results suggest that subjects in the feedback condition adjusted their behavior faster following better-than-expected outcomes, compared to subjects in the no-feedback condition. Additionally, in both task conditions, “avoiders” adjusted their behavior faster following worse-than-expected outcomes, and treated the ambiguous no-feedback outcome as less rewarding, compared to non-avoiders. Together, results shed light on the important role of ambiguous and informative feedback in avoidance behavior.  相似文献

The timing and frequency of spontaneous eyeblinking is thought to be influenced by ongoing internal cognitive or neurophysiological processes, but how precisely these processes influence the dynamics of eyeblinking is still unclear. This study aimed to better understand the functional role of eyeblinking during cognitive processes by investigating the temporal pattern of eyeblinks during the performance of attentional tasks. The timing of spontaneous eyeblinks was recorded from 28 healthy subjects during the performance of both visual and auditory versions of the Stroop task, and the temporal distributions of eyeblinks were estimated in relation to the timing of stimulus presentation and vocal response during the tasks. We found that the spontaneous eyeblink rate increased during Stroop task performance compared with the resting rate. Importantly, the subjects (17/28 during the visual Stroop, 20/28 during the auditory Stroop) were more likely to blink before a vocal response in both tasks (150-250 msec) and the remaining subjects were more likely to blink soon after the vocal response (200-300 msec), regardless of the stimulus type (congruent or incongruent) or task difficulty. These findings show that spontaneous eyeblinks are closely associated with responses during the performance of the Stroop task on a short time scale and suggest that spontaneous eyeblinks likely signal a shift in the internal cognitive or attentional state of the subjects.  相似文献

Objectives

To effectively manage current task demands, attention must be focused on task-relevant information while task-irrelevant information is rejected. However, in everyday life, people must cope with emotions, which may interfere with actual task demands and may challenge functional attention allocation. Control of interfering emotions has been associated with the proper functioning of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). As DLPFC dysfunction is evident in subjects with ADHD and in subjects with alcohol dependence, the current study sought to examine the bottom-up effect of emotional distraction on task performance in both disorders.

Methods

Male adults with ADHD (n = 22), male adults with alcohol dependence (n = 16), and healthy controls (n = 30) performed an emotional working memory task (n-back task). In the background of the task, we presented neutral and negative stimuli that varied in emotional saliency.

Results

In both clinical groups, a working memory deficit was evident. Moreover, both clinical groups displayed deficient emotional interference control. The n-back performance of the controls was not affected by the emotional distractors, whereas that of subjects with ADHD deteriorated in the presence of low salient distractors, and that of alcoholics did not deteriorate until high salient distractors were presented. Subsequent to task performance, subjects with ADHD accurately recognized more distractors than did alcoholics and controls. In alcoholics, picture recognition accuracy was negatively associated with n-back performance, suggesting a functional association between the ability to suppress emotional distractors and successful task performance. In subjects with ADHD, performance accuracy was negatively associated with ADHD inattentive symptoms, suggesting that inattention contributes to the performance deficit.

Conclusions

Subjects with ADHD and alcoholics both display an emotional interference control deficit, which is especially pronounced in subjects with ADHD. Beyond dysfunctional attention allocation processes, a more general attention deficit seems to contribute to the more pronounced performance deficit pattern in ADHD.  相似文献

The EEG recording was made when the subjects performed tasks that involved overcoming the stereotype (creative) and retrieving information from memory (noncreative) with the usual and complicated presentation of the initial material (incomplete proverbs and sayings without concluding words). The subjective complexity of the task performance under different conditions was assessed. The EEG power from 19 EEG derivations was compared in the β2 and γ frequency bands. The creative task performance was associated with a marked increase in the EEG power; significantly more complicated noncreative tasks were not accompanied by marked changes in the EEG power in these bands.  相似文献

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a non-muscular communication channel for persons with severe motor impairments. Previous studies have shown that the aptitude with which a BCI can be controlled varies from person to person. A reliable predictor of performance could facilitate selection of a suitable BCI paradigm. Eleven severely motor impaired participants performed three sessions of a P300 BCI web browsing task. Before each session auditory oddball data were collected to predict the BCI aptitude of the participants exhibited in the current session. We found a strong relationship of early positive and negative potentials around 200 ms (elicited with the auditory oddball task) with performance. The amplitude of the P2 (r  =  −0.77) and of the N2 (r  =  −0.86) had the strongest correlations. Aptitude prediction using an auditory oddball was successful. The finding that the N2 amplitude is a stronger predictor of performance than P3 amplitude was reproduced after initially showing this effect with a healthy sample of BCI users. This will reduce strain on the end-users by minimizing the time needed to find suitable paradigms and inspire new approaches to improve performance.  相似文献

The results are outlined of a comparative estimation of averaged EP recorded in response to simultaneous and separate presentation of photic and acoustic stimuli on EEG of fifteen healthy subjects and twelve patients with focal lesions of the diencephalic structures. Investigation of the EP components and integral-temporal parameters has revealed that in healthy subjects EP to a combined heteromodal stimulation considerably exceeded by amplitude the one recorded in response to a separate presentation of stimuli. In case of lesion of the diencephalic formations, the converging effect of polysensory stimulation for the main waves of the response was less pronounced than in healthy subjects. At the same time, in pathological cases the summation effect of the afteraction potential (recorded after the main EP components as a slow negative oscillation) was manifested most distinctly, especially in the central zone of the cortex.  相似文献

Stability of the cognitive set to nonsense words in healthy adult subjects was compared in two experimental conditions: (1) subjects had only to recognize pseudowords/words; (2) in each trial after the pseudoword/word recognition, subjects had to press a button in response to a visual probe stimulus and only after this action to pronounce a recognized pseudoword/word. It was shown that complication of the cognitive performance in the second condition did not affect the set rigidity. However, the pattern of the cortical electric activity substantially changed: the EEG power in the theta frequency range and coherence function, in particular, interhemispheric, in the frontal cortical areas were higher in the second condition. The increase in coherence function in the frontal areas was most pronounced in the theta and alphal ranges. It was suggested that increase in activity of the frontal regions of the brain cortex facilitates shifts of visual sets under increasing load of the working memory.  相似文献
