Two-hundred-and-forty rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri , were exposed for 30 days to sublethal concentrations of the pesticide endrin. On day 30, ten fish from each treatment group were sacrificed and examined for the ability of peritoneal macrophages to phagocytize latex beads. The remaining fish were immunized with 10 μg of Yersinia ruckeri O-antigen, and exposure to endrin continued. The migration inhibition factor assay (MIF), plaque forming cell assay (PFC), and serum agglutination titres (SAG) were performed 2, 14, and 30 days post-antigen inoculation. Serum was collected from all fish for serum cortisol concentrations. Endrin exposure had no effect on the phagocytic ability of peritoneal macrophages. However, the MIF, PFC and SAG responses were significantly reduced from control values. Serum cortisol concentrations were found to be significantly elevated in endrin-exposed fish. Serum cortisol concentrations were found to be significantly higher on days 44 and 60 (192 and 194 ng ml−1, respectively) when compared to days 30 and 32 (159 and 141 ng ml−1, respectively). Cortisol values for days 30 and 32 did not differ significantly, nor did those of days 44 and 60. The relationship between elevated serum cortisol concentrations and endrin exposure on the immune response is discussed.  相似文献

Young lemon sharks, Negaprion brevirostris , were kept under controlled conditions in an aquarium and fed blue runner, Caranx crysos , at different ration levels. The relationship between feeding rate and growth rate was best described by a von Bertalanffy growth curve, which predicted a maximum growth rate of 140 kJ kg−1 day−1 (0·66% b.w. day−1), a maintenance ration of 199 kJ kg−1 day−1 (1·06% b.w. day−1), and losses due to starvation of -236kJ kg−1 day−1 (1·11% b.w. day−1). The relationship between gross conversion efficiency ( K 1) and feeding rate was also examined. K1 ranged from - 64 to 25% and did not drop at high ration levels. Activity levels of both starved sharks and sharks fed at maintenance were not significantly different (0·2 body lengths s−1). K 1 values generated from both laboratory and field data suggest that young lemon sharks can convert food to new tissue as efficiently as teleosts.  相似文献

Hypo-osmoregulatory ability in juvenile Atlantic salmon, Sulrno salur L., was improved by cortisol treatment. Implantation of a vegetable shortening pellet containing cortisol (50 mg kg−1) resulted in elevated plasma cortisol titres. Maximum cortisol levels (160–170ngml−1) were observed at days 6 and 12 after the implantation and dropped significantly by day 55. Cortisol-implanted fish in fresh water developed a twofold increase in gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity at days 6 and 12, and a threefold increase by day 55. Intestinal mucosa Na+/K+-ATPase activity was not affected by cortisol. Cortisol-implanted fish exposed to 28 ppt sea water for 48 h tended to show an improved ability to regulate their plasma osmolarity and reduce their ionic load. The osmo-regulatory ability attained at days 12 and 55 was further evaluated by exposing fish to 37 ppt sea water for 96 h. While all the control fish died relatively early in these tests, cortisol-implanted fish showed a clear reduction in their mortality rate. These results indicate that cortisol can induce biochemical and organismal changes during winter months that typify preadaptive events normally occurring in the spring.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to characterize the corticosteroid response of yellow perch Perca flavescens following an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and determine if sustained differences in rearing density alter this response. In the first experiment, yellow perch were injected with LPS (3 mg kg−1), saline, or handled without receiving any injection. Concentrations of cortisol in plasma were elevated in all groups relative to non‐disturbed fish at 1·5 and 3 h after handling but by 6 h after injection the mean concentration of cortisol in plasma from LPS‐injected yellow perch were three to five times higher than fish before injection and significantly larger than groups of fish not treated with LPS. In the second test, yellow perch were held at different rearing densities (9 v . 18-19 kg m−3) for 3, 7 and 14 days before injection with LPS (3 mg kg−1). The cortisol response of yellow perch following LPS injection of fish held for 14 days at high density was significantly lower than that of fish held at the low density for the same duration. Additionally a trend of a decreased cortisol response to LPS injection as duration of holding increased was observed among fish held at high density relative to fish held at low density. These data illustrate that the corticosteroid response of yellow perch following LPS injection is distinct from handling alone and that the magnitude of the response is impacted by rearing density.  相似文献

Blue-spotted trevally, Caranx bucculentus , were fed different rations of pilchard and prawn in order to investigate feeding and growth relationships. Maintenance rations at 25.5° C amounted to 3.7% B.W. day−1 and 2.7% B.W. day−1 for prawns and pilchards, respectively. Additional feeding experiments at 28.9° C yielded a maintenance ration of prawns of 3.8% B.W. day−1, suggesting there is very little if any temperature effect on the feeding-growth relationship over the range studied. Fish fed twice or more each day consumed about 7.3 ± 1.4% B.W. day−1.
Given the biomass of this trevally in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, and the contribution of prawns to its diet, we estimate consumption of commercial prawns at 25 ± 5 g.ha−1 day−1 or 11 g kg−1 day−1.  相似文献

Growth of captive juvenile Pacific halibut was linearly related to energy consumption (J g−1 day−1) at 4°C by the following equation: growth (% body weight (b.w.) day−1)=0–007 (consumption J g−1 day−1)– 0.192; r2 =0.81. Weight gain was independent of size for fish between 9 and 7000 g when growth was expressed as a function of consumption in J g−1 day−1. Maintenance ration determined in feeding–growth experiments averaged 27.4 J g−1 day−1 at 4–0°C. Small halibut ate significantly more food than large fish. Single meals following 2 day fasts averaged 4.1% b.w. for halibut under 100 g, 1.72% b.w. for 1.2 kg fish and 1.1% B.W. for 6.8 kg fish. Both large and small size categories of halibut tended to evacuate their meal in about 3 days even though small fish ate relatively larger meals. Minimum estimates for daily ration to achieve growth rates observed in the Gulf of Alaska were approximately 0.5 to 2.4% b.w. day−1 depending on fish size and whether northern shrimp or yellowfin sole were their prey.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effect of cannulation and chronic'black-box' confinement, as well as epinephrine administration (4–0 μg kg−1), on the degree and time-course of alterations in trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) catecholamine and cortisol concentrations. Plasma cortisol concentrations in seawater trout acclimated to 3–6° C reached 104 ng ml−1 1 day after cannulation/confinement and remained elevated above resting levels (8 ng ml−1) until 6 days post-confinement. Although plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine generally declined over the period of confinement (day 1 approx. 12 nM; day 7 approx. 6 nM), norepinephrine titres were usually higher and more variable. Epinephrine injection caused elevations in plasma epinephrine levels but not in norepinephrine levels; epinephrine titres reaching 107 ± 26 nM (range 65–238 nM) at 2 min post-injection and returning to pre-injection levels by 30 min post-injection. Plasma cortisol increased by 20 ng ml−1 following epinephrine administration. Based on the time-course for post-confinement alterations in plasma cortisol, it appears that up to a week may be required before cannulated fish are completely acclimated to 'black-box' confinement. The findings suggest that meaningful results from experiments utilizing epinephrine injection and 'black-box confinement are contingent upon: (1) knowledge of circulating epinephrine levels shortly after injection (i.e. within 2 min post-injection); and (2) an experimental design that takes into account the elevated cortisol titres that are inherent with cannulation/confinement and epinephrine injection.  相似文献

The immunocompetence of juvenile laboratory-reared red drum treated with cortisol in the diet (250 and 500 mg kg−1 food) was assessed following intramuscular administration of bacterio-phage ( Escherichia coli OX 174), washed bovine erythrocytes (1% suspension) and bovine serum albumin (100mg). Cortisol induced suppressive effects on the fish response to two of the three antigens (i.e., haemagglutinating activity to bovine erythrocytes and precipitin development to bovine serum albumin). These differential effects of cortisol on T-dependent antigens could be interpreted as evidence for heterogeneity of red drum T lymphocytes.  相似文献

The field metabolic rates (FMR) and water fluxes of Varanus scalaris were measured during the wet and dry seasons by the doubly-labelled water technique. Seasonal measurements of standard (night-time) metabolism (SMR) and resting (daytime) metabolism (RMR) were made in the laboratory at 18, 24, 30 and 36°C, and maximal oxygen consumption was measured at 36°C on a motorized treadmill. This population was active throughout the year. In the wet season, the mean FMR was 7.8 kJ day−1 (128.0 kJkg−1 day−1; mean mass = 66.4 g, n = 13), and during the dry season the mean was 5.0 kJ day−1 (67.6 kJ kg−1 day−1; mean mass = 77.4 g, n = 17). The mean water flux rates for these animals were 3.6 and 1.2 ml day−1, respectively (60.4 and 16.6 ml kg−1 day−1). The seasonal means of FMR and water flux were significantly different by ANCOVA ( P < 0.0001). Measurements of SMR and RMR were significantly higher in the wet season (ANCOVA: P < 0.0001), but we found no difference in the maximal oxygen consumption between seasons (ANCOVA: P = 0.6). The maximal oxygen consumption of the lizards on the treadmill (2.9 ml min−1= 1.8 ml g−1 h−1), mean mass = 97.4 g, n = 16) was 20 times that of the SMR at the same temperature during the dry season, and 11 times that of the SMR during the wet season. The seasonal differences in FMR were attributable to: changes in SMR (12.2%) and RMR (16.4%); differences in night-time body temperatures (11.3) and daytime body temperatures (16.4%); and activity (broadly defined to include locomotion, digestion, and reproductive costs (43.7%).  相似文献

A significantly higher concentration of testicular spermatozoa was obtained from freshwater Oreochromis mossambicus (9·9×109 spermatozoa ml−1) than seawater O. mossambicus (4·6×109 spermatozoa ml−1). The mean osmolality of the urine of freshwater fish (78·5 mOsmol kg−1) was significantly different from that of seawater fish (304·8 mOsmol kg−1). The mean length of the mid-piece of the spermatozoa together with the tail was more variable in freshwater O. mossambicus (8·80±0·23μm) than in seawater specimens (8·27±0·18 μm). Stripped sperm of freshwater O. mossambicus was highly contaminated by urine which was a good activator of sperm motility in O. mossambicus held in both fresh and sea water. The osmolality for initiation of motility in freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa was from 0 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 while for seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa it was from 0 to 1022 mOsmol kg−1. The optimum osmolality for motility was from 70 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 for freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa and from 333 to 645 mOsmol kg−1 for seawater fish. In freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, the presence of 20 mM CaCl2 increased the permissive osmolality of NaCl from 184 to 645 mOsmol kg−1. For seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, solutions of NaCl devoid of CaCl2 were unable initiate motility, but the addition of 1·5 to 30 mM CaCl2 to the NaCl solution (0–934 mOsmol kg1) had a full motility initiating effect.  相似文献

For wild red snapper Lutjanus campechanus , mean otolith increment deposition rate after marking with oxytetracycline dihydrate (OTC) was daily (0.97 increments day−1) when growth rates were fast (0.63 mm fork length, L F day−1), but were not daily (0.82 increments day−1) when somatic growth was slow (0.2 mm L F day−1). For reared larvae ( n =8), increment deposition rates were daily (0.99–1.03 increments day−1), and growth rates ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 mm L F day−1. Growth rate affected increment deposition rate as a threshold function, i.e. when growth rate was <0.3 mm L F day−1, deposition was less than daily, but above this level increment deposition did not exceed a daily rate. As growth rates increased increment widths increased. Examination of a sub-sample ( n =8) of the otoliths from the slowest growing wild fish by scanning electron microscopy did not increase increment counts. Because L. campechanus are late spring-early summer spawners, young fish can expect maximum growth due to warm summer temperatures. Thus, daily ageing methods should be well suited to this species.  相似文献

Juvenile plaice ( Pleuronectes platessa ) were studied in Port Erin Bay, Isle of Man, U.K. between September and March 1989/1990 and 1990/1991. Plaice (>90 mm) were tagged and individual growth rates calculated for the autumn, winter and over-winter time periods. During the study the population of fish >90 mm remained fairly stable both within a study season and between years. Autumn growth rates ranged from 0 to 0.39 mm day−1 (mean1989=0.13 mm day−1, mean1990=0.10 mm day −1) and winter 0 to 0.5 mm day−1 (mean1990=0.11 mm day−1 and mean1991=0.17 mm day −1). In general, growth rates were higher at higher mean seasonal temperatures. However, relative growth rate was significantly higher in the colder winter period of 1991 than 1990.  相似文献

The absolute gut evacuation rate (GER) (g day−1) of Harpagifer antarcticus increased with increasing ration mass, fish mass only influenced the absolute GER at a daily ration level of 0·3% wet fish mass (approximately a maintenance ration). The relative GER (% of meal fed day−1) was also affected differently by fish and ration mass depending on the relative ration level being fed; at rations of 0·7% wet fish mass or above the relative GER decreased with increasing fish or ration mass (in such a way that the absolute GER remained constant and unaffected by fish mass). At maintenance (0·3% wet fish mass) rations the relative GER was not affected by fish size or ration mass. Thus, there appears to be a ration threshold above which the digestion physiology alters. Mass-specific GER (% g fish−1 day−1) decreased with increasing fish mass. Within a set relative ration level (% wet fish mass) an increase in fish mass decreased the mass-specific GER. At a fixed ration mass, an increase in fish mass (i.e. a reduction in the ration expressed as % fish mass) resulted in a decrease in mass-specific GER. Gut evaluation time (GET) decreased and absorption efficiency (A) increased with increasing absolute GER. The effect of ration and fish mass on the absolute and relative GER followed the same pattern irrespective of the diet, however the A and GER (% day−1 and g day−1) were higher and the GET shorter when the fish were fed shelled krill rather than amphipods.  相似文献

Preliminary experiments were performed to determine the diurnal variation in cortisol, using trout which had been cannulated three days previously. These results indicated that cortisol levels were reasonably stable between 10.00 and 18.00 hours, thus permitting experimentation during this period without diurnal fluctuations masking the cortisol response. Uncannulated fish were exercised in a flume for 2 h at 1, 2.6 and 5 bl s-1 and plasma samples taken from groups of five animals at 15, 30, 60 and 120 min after the start of exercise and at 1½, 12 and 24 h after the exercise ceased. The cortisol levels in all cases were elevated after 15 min, but the magnitude of the elevation increased with swimming speed. At 1 bl s-1 the cortisol levels increased from 76.4 (± 20.4) to 129.2 (± 20.4) ng ml-1 [mean (± s.d. )]. At 2.6 bl s-1 the increase was from 72.4 (± 17.1) to 254.4 (± 34.4) ng ml-1 and at 5 bl s-1 the increase was from 69.5 (± 27.5) to 326.4 (± 39.0) ng ml-1. The cortisol levels were stable over the exercise period and all groups recovered to baseline levels after 24 h, though the sample taken 12 h after the termination of exercise was elevated due to regular nocturnal increases in cortisol levels. There were no dramatic changes in blood sugar levels during and after exercise at 1 and 3.2 bl s-1.  相似文献

Acoustic telemetry was used to assess patterns of utilization by black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri of regions with and without re-introduced large woody debris (LWD) in two estuaries of south-eastern Australia, the Mitchell and Tambo Rivers. The fish ( n = 46) were implanted with acoustic transmitters in December 2004 and March 2005 and monitored for c. 12 months. The two principal metrics from the telemetry data, number of visits per day ( N day−1) and residency (amount of time, s) were highly correlated ( r > 0·948), and subsequent analyses were based on N day−1. Rates of N day−1 varied inconsistently among estuarine regions across diel periods and times of year for each river. In the Tambo River during autumn, winter and spring, the N day−1 was greatest in the middle and upper estuarine regions during the day, and often greater in the lower region at dawn and dusk, but varied little among regions in summer. The provision of LWD had little effect on N day−1 in the Tambo River. In the Mitchell River, N day−1 varied little among estuarine regions without LWD, regardless of the time of day, and these patterns were consistent across seasons, but N day−1 was significantly greater to the LWD during the day in winter and spring. Freshwater flows had little effect on monthly patterns of N day−1 among regions in either estuary. The perceived 'benefits' to A. butcheri of re-establishing LWD within estuarine systems of south-eastern Australia depended strongly on the time of year, time of day and river system, but acoustic telemetry was a useful method of evaluating the use by fish of these artificial structures.  相似文献

To better understand migratory divergences among Anguilla anguilla glass eels, the behaviour of individuals caught at the time of their estuary entrance was studied through their response to a light:dark cycle and then to both water current reversal and light:dark cycle. In a first experiment, fish moving with the flow in response to dusk (M+ fish) and fish that had not exhibited any movement (M fish) were distinguished. Anguilla anguilla from these two groups were then individually marked and their response to water current reversal compared. M+ individuals mainly exhibited negative rheotaxis with a tidal periodicity, whereas positive rheotaxis was mainly exhibited by M individuals. Thus, M+ A. anguilla glass eels showing negative rheotaxis appear to have the strongest propensity to migrate, the converse applies to M ones showing positive rheotaxis. A small percentage of individuals (5%) were hyperactive, alternately swimming with and against the current with almost no resting phase. These fish lost c . 2 mg wet mass day−1, whereas individuals which were almost inactive lost c . 1 mg day−1. Wet and dry mass changes in relation to activity levels were compared with previous experiments and it was concluded that A. anguilla glass eel energy status might be involved in differences in migratory tendencies but other factors that might be important are discussed. It is proposed that any decrease in A. anguilla glass eel energy stores associated with global warming might lead to an increase in the proportion of sedentary individuals and thus be involved in the decrease in the recruitment to freshwater habitats.  相似文献

Serum osmolalities and chloride concentrations were examined in polar cod. When exposed to oil male and female fish responded differently. Ingestion of food contaminated with oil led to a significant decrease in osmolality (from 503 to 492 mOsm kg1) in males. There was no significant effect of oil ingestion on serum osmolality in females, but chloride concentrations were increased (from 196 to 203 mmol kg1). Gender related responses should, therefore, be considered when assessing the possible effects of environmental pollutants on fish physiology.  相似文献

Six isonitrogenous (gross protein content 35%) and isoenergetic (gross energy content 17 kJ g−1) diets were formulated to investigate the effects of inclusion of plant proteins on the gibel carp ( Carassius auratus gibelio L.). The plant proteins tested were: soybean cake (SBC), potato protein concentrate (PPC), peanut cake (PNC), cottonseed cake (CSC) and rapeseed cake (RSC). Fish meal (FM) was used as control. In each diet, 27% of the protein was supplied by fish meal, and the rest supplied by the plant protein tested. Each diet was fed to three groups of gibel carp for 8 weeks in a recirculation system. Specific growth rate (SGR) in fish fed the control diet was significantly higher than those in the other groups, and SGR in fish fed the PPC was significantly lower than in fish fed other plant proteins. There was no significant difference in SGR among the other groups. Feeding rates were ranked in the order: RSC > CSC > FM > PNC > SBC > PPC. Conversion efficiency was highest in groups fed FM, SBC and PNC, followed by groups fed CSC and RSC, and was lowest in the group fed PPC. The fish fed PPC showed lower protein retention than those fed FM and SBC. FM showed highest energy retention while PPC showed lowest. There was no significant relationship between SGR and intake of digestible protein (g g−1 day−1), digestible lysine (g g−1 day−1), digestible methionine (g g−1 day−1) or digestible total essential amino acids (g g−1 day−1), suggesting that the differences in SGR could not alone account for any of these variables.  相似文献

Starvation of second sea winter farmed Atlantic salmon through February and March reduced body weight by 0.10% day−1 or 6.0% during the starvation period, whereas fed fish increased body weight by 0.10 day−1 or 5.9%. When fed again during 41 days in April and May, the starved group increased weight by 22.7% (0.55% day−1) compared with a 11.4% (0.28% day−1) gain in the unrestricted control. Ultrasound determination of sex and maturity in late May showed that the incidence of maturation was reduced by 48% among females and 32% among males in the starved group, compared with the unrestricted group.  相似文献
