The maintenance of body cell mass (BCM) is critical for survival in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Accuracy of bioimpedance for measuring change (Delta) in intracellular water (ICW), which defines BCM, is uncertain. To evaluate bioimpedance-estimated DeltaBCM, the ICW of 21 weight-losing HIV patients was measured before and after anabolic steroid therapy by dilution (total body water by deuterium - extracellular water by bromide) and bioimpedance. Multiple-frequency modeling- and dilution-determined DeltaICW did not differ. The DeltaICW was predicted poorly by 50-kHz parallel reactance, 50-kHz impedance, and 200 - 5-kHz impedance. The DeltaICW predicted by 500 - 5-kHz impedance was closer to, but statistically different from, dilution-determined DeltaICW. However, the effect of random error on the measurement of systematic error in the 500 - 5-kHz method was 12-13% of the average measured DeltaICW; this was nearly twice the percent difference between obtained and threshold statistics. Although the 500 - 5-kHz method cannot be fully rejected, these results support the conclusion that only the multiple-frequency modeling approach accurately monitors DeltaBCM in HIV infection.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess for elderly Germans the validity of existing equations for predicting body cell mass (BCM) and to develop from single- and multifrequency bioimpedance (SFBIA, MFBIA) models new prediction equations. In a data-splitting approach, validation and cross-validation were performed in 160 healthy elderly (60- to 90-yr) subjects. BCM was determined using a tetrapolar bioimpedance analyzer (800 microA; 4 fixed frequencies: 1, 5, 50, and 100 kHz; electrodes placed to hand, wrist, ankle, and foot) and whole body (40)K counting as a reference method. New prediction equations were derived by multiple stepwise regression analysis. The Bland-Altman procedure was used for methods comparison. Relative to whole body counting, the manufacturer's equation overestimated BCM by 9% in men (P < 0.0001, paired t-test) and 4% in women (P = 0.002). Compared with the manufacturer's equation, the newly derived equations (r = 0.92, RMSE = 6-9%) improved accuracy (pure error = 13 vs. 7-8%) and reduced bias and limits of agreement. SFBIA and MFBIA equations did not differ in precision or accuracy. We conclude that the newly derived equations improved BCM estimates in the elderly compared with existing equations. There was no advantage of MFBIA over SFBIA equations.  相似文献

Objective: Multiple meaningful ecological characterizations of a species revolve around body mass. Because body mass cannot be directly measured in extinct taxa, reliable body mass predictors are needed. Many published body mass prediction equations rely on dental dimensions, but certain skeletal dimensions may have a more direct and consistent relationship with body mass. We seek to evaluate the reliability of prediction equations for inferring euarchontan body mass based on measurements of the articular facet areas of the astragalus and calcaneus. Methods: Surface areas of five astragalar facets (n = 217 specimens) and two calcaneal facets (n = 163) were measured. Separate ordinary least squares and multiple regression equations are presented for different levels of taxonomic inclusivity, and the reliability of each equation is evaluated with the coefficient of determination, standard error of the estimate, mean prediction error, and the prediction sum of squares statistic. We compare prediction errors to published prediction equations that utilize dental and/or tarsal measures. Finally, we examine the effects of taxonomically specific regressions and apply our equations to a diverse set of non‐primates. Results: Our results reveal that predictions based on facet areas are more reliable than most linear dental or tarsal predictors. Multivariate approaches are often better than univariate methods, but require more information (making them less useful for fragmentary fossils). While some taxonomically specific regressions improve predictive ability, this is not true for all primate groups. Conclusions: Among individual facets, the ectal and fibular facets of the astragalus and the calcaneal cuboid facet are the best body mass predictors. Since these facets have primarily concave curvature and scale with positive allometry relative to body mass, it appears that candidate skeletal proxies for body mass can be identified based on their curvature and scaling coefficients. A primate's body mass covaries with numerous ecological, physiological, and behavioral characteristics. This versatility and potential to provide insight into an animal's life has made body mass prediction a frequent and important objective in paleoanthropology. In hominin paleontology, the most commonly employed body mass prediction equations (BMPEs) are “mechanical” and “morphometric”: uni- or multivariate linear regressions incorporating dimensions of load-bearing skeletal elements and stature and living bi-iliac breadth as predictor variables, respectively. The precision and accuracy of BMPEs are contingent on multiple factors, however, one of the most notable and pervasive potential sources of error is extrapolation beyond the limits of the reference sample. In this study, we use a test sample requiring extrapolation—56 bonobos (Pan paniscus) from the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo—to evaluate the predictive accuracy of human-based morphometric BMPEs. We first assess systemic differences in stature and bi-iliac breadth between humans and bonobos. Due to significant differences in the scaling relationships of body mass and stature between bonobos and humans, we use panel regression to generate a novel BMPE based on living bi-iliac breadth. We then compare the predictive accuracy of two previously published morphometric equations with the novel equation and find that the novel equation predicts bonobo body mass most accurately overall (41 of 56 bonobos predicted within 20% of their observed body mass). The novel BMPE is particularly accurate between 25 and 45 kg. Given differences in limb proportions, pelvic morphology, and body tissue composition between the human reference and bonobo test samples, we find these results promising and evaluate the novel BMPE's potential application to fossil hominins.  相似文献

This study aimed to analyze the reliability and evaluate the causes of variability of bioimpedance parameters. Direct measures were analyzed because they are not affected by inappropriate prediction models. Resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PA) were determined at three fixed frequencies (5, 50, and 100 kHz) in 653 normal Germans (244 males and 409 females), aged 20-90 years, using a phase-sensitive whole-body tetrapolar bioimpedance analyzer (BIA 2000-M, Data Input, Germany). From these values, six bioimpedance ratios were calculated (R(5)/R(50), R(5)/R(100), Xc(5)/Xc(50), Xc(5)/Xc(100), PA(5)/PA(50), and PA(5)/PA(100)). Reliability of duplicate measurements, as determined by technical error, is high. ANOVA for repeated measurements yields a significant frequency main effect (within-subjects factor) and significant effects of age and gender (between-subject factors) on variation of resistance, reactance, and phase angle. Multiple regression analyses indicate independent effects of age, gender, and body mass index on variability of resistance, reactance, and phase angle at the three frequencies. Gender primarily influences variation in resistance (smaller values in males), whereas age mainly affects variations in reactance and phase angle (smaller values in older adults). Obesity is associated with smaller resistance (at all frequencies) and smaller reactance (high frequencies), but larger phase-angle values (low frequency). The study shows that variability of direct bioimpedance measures depends on age, gender, and body mass characteristics of the study population. The potential benefit for using both low and high frequencies in R measures is to differentiate between extra- and intracellular fluid spaces, which may be altered during human growth and aging.  相似文献

Recent advancements in mass spectrometric proteomics provide a promising result in utilizing saliva to explore biomarkers for diagnostic purposes. However, the issues of specificity or redundancy of disease-associated salivary biomarkers have not been described. This systematic review was therefore aimed to define and summarize disease-related salivary biomarkers identified by mass spectrometry proteomics. Peer-reviewed articles published through July 2009 within three databases were reviewed. Out of 243 articles, 21 studies were selected in this systematic review with conditions including Sj?gren's syndrome, squamous cell carcinoma, dental caries, diabetes, breast cancer, periodontitis, gastric cancer, systemic sclerosis, oral lichen planus, bleeding oral cavity, and graft-versus-host disease. The sample size ranged from 3-41 in both diseased and control subjects, with no consensus on sample collection protocol. One hundred eighty biomarkers were identified in total; 87 upregulated, 63 downregulated, and 30 varying based on disease. Except for Sj?gren's syndrome, the majority of studies with the same disease produce inconsistent biomarkers. Larger sample size and standardization of sample collection/treatment protocol may improve future studies.  相似文献

Techniques for partitioning cell adhesion are useful tools in biological and medical experiments. However, conventional cell patterning methods require special apparatus, special materials or high-level skills. Therefore, we have developed a new cell patterning methodology which can be easily carried out in biological laboratories. Non-cell adhesive material including hydrogel or gas patterns to restrict cell adhesion on a culture dish or glass substrates can be constructed by exploiting a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold with microchannels. The PDMS molds suck non-adhesive materials into microchannels from the inlet of the microchannels and the materials are immobilized onto the substrates with a desired pattern. High resolution under a few micrometers and long-term stability can be realized. This method has been used for analysis of stem cells, muscle cells, neuron development and other cells in collaboration with many biological researchers. Several examples to use this technique are introduced in this review.  相似文献

The method of morphotype construction based on the principle components is described. The morphotype system has been constructed for the main circumferences of a man's body including the size index of diametrical dimensions and the character of trunk-limbs distribution of the body mass. According to the second index it is possible to determine the following variants: the centripetal one with the trunk circumferences predominance over the limbs circumferences and the inverted combination-centrifugal type. The geographical regularity values of the morphological indexes for some ethnoterritorial groups of the USSR has been shown.  相似文献

In the past, body mass was reconstructed from hominin skeletal remains using both "mechanical" methods which rely on the support of body mass by weight-bearing skeletal elements, and "morphometric" methods which reconstruct body mass through direct assessment of body size and shape. A previous comparison of two such techniques, using femoral head breadth (mechanical) and stature and bi-iliac breadth (morphometric), indicated a good general correspondence between them (Ruff et al. [1997] Nature 387:173-176). However, the two techniques were never systematically compared across a large group of modern humans of diverse body form. This study incorporates skeletal measures taken from 1,173 Holocene adult individuals, representing diverse geographic origins, body sizes, and body shapes. Femoral head breadth, bi-iliac breadth (after pelvic rearticulation), and long bone lengths were measured on each individual. Statures were estimated from long bone lengths using appropriate reference samples. Body masses were calculated using three available femoral head breadth (FH) formulae and the stature/bi-iliac breadth (STBIB) formula, and compared. All methods yielded similar results. Correlations between FH estimates and STBIB estimates are 0.74-0.81. Slight differences in results between the three FH estimates can be attributed to sampling differences in the original reference samples, and in particular, the body-size ranges included in those samples. There is no evidence for systematic differences in results due to differences in body proportions. Since the STBIB method was validated on other samples, and the FH methods produced similar estimates, this argues that either may be applied to skeletal remains with some confidence.  相似文献

The use of low intensity ultrasound has gotten surprising consideration over the last decade as a method for enhancing the catalytic activity of enzyme. Ultrasounds have the potential to significantly influence the activity of the enzymatic processes, provided that the energy input is not so high as to inactivate the enzyme. By providing the variation in parameters, various physical and chemical effects can be attained that can enhance the enzymatic reaction. Ultrasonic reactors are known for their application in bioprocesses. However, the potential of their applications is still limited broadly due to the lack of proper information about their operational and performance parameters. In this review, the detailed information about ultrasonic reactors is provided by defining the different types of reactors and number and position of ultrasonic transducers. Also, it includes mechanism of intensification and influence of ultrasonic parameters (intensity, duty cycle, and frequency) and enzymatic factors (enzyme concentration, temperature, and pH) on the catalytic activity of enzyme during ultrasound treatment.  相似文献

Estimates of body mass often represent the founding assumption on which biomechanical and macroevolutionary hypotheses are based. Recently, a scaling equation was applied to a newly discovered titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur (Dreadnoughtus), yielding a 59 300 kg body mass estimate for this animal. Herein, we use a modelling approach to examine the plausibility of this mass estimate for Dreadnoughtus. We find that 59 300 kg for Dreadnoughtus is highly implausible and demonstrate that masses above 40 000 kg require high body densities and expansions of soft tissue volume outside the skeleton several times greater than found in living quadrupedal mammals. Similar results from a small sample of other archosaurs suggests that lower-end mass estimates derived from scaling equations are most plausible for Dreadnoughtus, based on existing volumetric and density data from extant animals. Although volumetric models appear to more tightly constrain dinosaur body mass, there remains a clear need to further support these models with more exhaustive data from living animals. The relative and absolute discrepancies in mass predictions between volumetric models and scaling equations also indicate a need to systematically compare predictions across a wide size and taxonomic range to better inform studies of dinosaur body size.  相似文献

Objective:

Compulsive buying has historically been associated with various self‐regulatory disturbances, including eating pathology (e.g., binge eating). Therefore, a relationship between scores on a measure of compulsive buying, the Compulsive Buying Scale (CBS), and body mass index (BMI) in adulthood was hypothesized.

Design and Methods:

Using a self‐report survey methodology in a cross‐sectional consecutive sample of convenience of 373 obstetrics/gynecology patients, correlations between CBS scores and BMI, both generally and with regard to race were examined.

Results:

A modest general correlation between CBS scores and BMI (r = 0.17, P < 0.01) was found. However, when these data were examined by race, CBS scores and BMI were significantly related among Caucasian women (r = 0.25, P < 0.01), but not in African American women (r = 0.04, P = n.s.).

Conclusions:

Findings indicate that compulsive buying is associated with increasing BMI in adulthood, particularly among Caucasian women.  相似文献

Objective: This study evaluated to what extent dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) and two types of bioimpedance analysis (BIA) yield similar results for body fat mass (FM) in men and women with different levels of obesity and physical activity (PA). Methods and Procedures: The study population consisted of 37–81‐year‐old Finnish people (82 men and 86 women). FM% was estimated using DXA (GE Lunar Prodigy) and two BIA devices (InBody (720) and Tanita BC 418 MA). Subjects were divided into normal, overweight, and obese groups on the basis of clinical cutoff points of BMI, and into low PA (LPA) and high PA (HPA) groups. Agreement between the devices was calculated by using the Bland–Altman analysis. Results: Compared to DXA, both BIA devices provided on average 2–6% lower values for FM% in normal BMI men, in women in all BMI categories, and in both genders in both HPA and LPA groups. In obese men, the differences were smaller. The two BIA devices provided similar means for groups. Differences between the two BIA devices with increasing FM% were a result of the InBody (720) not including age in their algorithm for estimating body composition. Discussion: BIA methods provided systematically lower values for FM than DXA. However, the differences depend on gender and body weight status pointing out the importance of considering these when identifying people with excess FM.  相似文献
