Large white-headed gulls provide an interesting group of birds for studies of hybridization. The group is composed of 20 species of recent origin, often with weak reproductive barriers. Here we report the results from a study on the glaucous gull Larus hyperboreus, an Arctic species which has been breeding in Iceland for centuries, and the herring gull Larus argentatus which has a wide distribution in Europe but colonized Iceland in 1920s. Previous studies, based on morphological variation indicated hybridization between the two species in Iceland, have been questioned as it may just reflect variation within the species. Here we evaluate whether hybridization has occurred between the two species in Iceland by studying variation in microsatellites and mtDNA. The analysis is based on feathers taken from wings sampled in Iceland over a period of 40 years. The results are compared with samples obtained from East Greenland and published sequences of samples obtained throughout Europe. The genetic analysis reveals a distinctive grouping of the two species, although they present a shallow genealogy and an extensive sharing of the genetic variants between the two species. Several individuals show admixture for molecular markers, which may result from an incomplete lineage sorting although geographical patterns of both mtDNA haplotypes and microsatellites strongly indicate a recent hybridization in Iceland.  相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of the first microsatellite loci specifically developed for the Common Eider duck, Somateria mollissima. Our 10 loci show Mendelian inheritance and no linkage disequilibrium between any pair of loci. In the Eider duck, we observed between two and 16 alleles per locus, an expected heterozygosity between 0.31 and 0.97, and an observed heterozygosity between 0.14 and 1.00. Most primers also yield reproducible results in several other anatid species. These loci comprise a set of autosomal molecular markers for various applications, from moderately polymorphic loci suitable for population studies to highly polymorphic loci for pedigree analysis in waterfowl.  相似文献

Hoplias malabaricus behaves as a zoophagous and euryphagic species with a strong tendency to eat fish during its entire life. Fish begin to constitute its main food at approximately 200 mm standard length. Insects are important for fish smaller than 50 mm. Crustaceans are of lesser importance for both size groups."Mojarras" (genus Astyanax), the characin Odontostilbe microcephala, and the catfish Pimelodus albicans are its main prey. The relative importance of each prey type varies with predator length.In high summer more food is eaten by H. malabaricus, and digestion rate, related to the higher temperatures, is also higher. We report the isolation and characterization of CAn microsatellite loci from the Mola mola genome using a variation of the hybrid capture method. Five loci exhibit high levels of heterozygocity and two show significant sequence similarity to genes from the closely related Fugu rubripes. These microsatellite markers should be useful in multidisciplinary efforts to understand population characteristics of the giant ocean sunfish.  相似文献

Microsatellite loci were identified from the charcoal rot fungus (Macrophomina phaseolina). Primer pairs for 46 loci were developed, and of these, 13 were optimized and screened using genomic DNA from 55 fungal isolates collected predominantly from two soybean fields in Mississippi. Twelve of the optimized loci were polymorphic and the number of alleles per locus ranged from 6 to 22. These microsatellites will be useful in population and pathogenicity studies to correspond with development of potential disease-resistant soybean and other susceptible crops.  相似文献

We developed a continental energetics‐based model of daily mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) movement during the non‐breeding period (September to May) to predict year‐specific migration and overwinter occurrence. The model approximates movements and stopovers as functions of metabolism and weather, in terms of temperature and frozen precipitation (i.e., snow). The model is a Markov process operating at the population level and is parameterized through a review of literature. We applied the model to 62 years of daily weather data for the non‐breeding period. The average proportion of available habitat decreased as weather severity increased, with mortality decreasing as the proportion of available habitat increased. The most commonly used locations during the course of the non‐breeding period were generally consistent across years, with the most inter‐annual variation present in the overwintering area. Our model revealed that the distribution of mallards on the landscape changed more dramatically when the variation in daily available habitat was greater. The main routes for avian migration in North America were predicted by our simulations: the Atlantic, Mississippi, Central, and Pacific flyways. Our model predicted an average of 77.4% survivorship for the non‐breeding period across all years (range = 76.4%–78.4%), with lowest survivorship during autumn (90.5 ± 1.4%), intermediate survivorship in winter (91.8 ± 0.7%), and greatest survivorship in spring (93.6 ± 1.1%). We provide the parameters necessary for exploration within and among other taxa to leverage the generalizability of this migration model to a broader expanse of bird species, and across a range of climate change and land use/land cover change scenarios.  相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of seven dinucleotide microsatellite loci developed from the red‐billed gull (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus). Locus‐specific primers were used to genotype individuals from 13 populations of this subspecies as well as individuals from closely related subspecies from Australia and New Caledonia. The primers were tested successfully on other species of gulls and shorebirds. The number of alleles observed within the red‐billed gull ranged from three to 17, and observed heterozygosity varied from 0.359 to 0.787. These microsatellites are likely to be useful for studies of mating systems and population genetics in a wide range of gull species.  相似文献

Wolf (Canis lupus) diets and potential effects on prey have been a prominent subject of interest to wildlife researchers and managers since reintroduction into Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, in 1995 and 1996. Post-reintroduction, wolves expanded south and recolonized areas in the southern Yellowstone ecosystem. Elk (Cervus elaphus) in this area are supplementally fed during winter (Dec–Mar) at state-managed feedgrounds, resulting in high-density congregations of elk. From December to March 2000–2007, we determined the winter predation patterns of wolves by examining the remains of 289 wolf kills on 3 state-managed feedgrounds and adjacent winter range near Jackson, Wyoming. During winters 2002–2005, we also monitored the movements of radio-collared elk on feedgrounds to describe the response of elk to the presence of wolf kills. Thirty-seven percent (n = 106) of kills were located on elk feedgrounds where elk composition included 49% calves, 42% adult females, 5% adult males, and 5% unknown. Sixty-three percent (n = 183) of kills were located on winter range adjacent to feedgrounds and prey species consisted of 90% elk (38% calves, 35% adult females, 24% adult males, 2% unknown), 9% moose (Alces alces; 13% calves, 69% adult females, 6% adult males, 1% unknown), 1% mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus; 1 fawn, 1 adult female), and 0.5% adult female bison (Bison bison). Mean age of elk killed on feedgrounds was 4.2 years (range = 0–20) and 4.6 years (range = 0–23) on winter range. Calves were selected more than available in most years with female elk killed less than expected. Adult males were killed more than expected in 2005–2007. Eighty-eight percent (n = 198) of the time elk remained on the feedground even when wolves made a kill. Less commonly, elk left the feedground, gathered in larger herds on adjacent feedgrounds absent of wolves, and returned within a few days (6%, n = 13) or left the feedground for another feedground and did not return for the rest of the winter (6%; n = 14). Elk were less likely to leave feedgrounds in the presence of a wolf kill when there were more elk on that feedground. Elk left feedgrounds with greater topography and tree cover (Alkali and Fish Creek) and gathered on the flat, open feedgrounds (Patrol Cabin) more frequently than they left flat, open feedgrounds for feedgrounds with greater topography and tree cover. Our results indicate wolves in our study area primarily preyed on elk and exhibited a strong preference for elk calves. High-density concentrations of elk on feedgrounds will continue to be an attractant for wolves. Although elk leave feedgrounds for reasons other than wolf presence, any displacement of elk from feedgrounds due to wolves will be temporary. State managers have the ability to alter management strategies (e.g., increasing wolf harvest, phasing out elk feeding, increasing the intensity of elk feeding) in an effort to affect predator-prey relationships. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Feeding habits and dietary overlap of three species of naidid oligochaetes (Chaetogaster diastrophus, Dero digitata, Dero nivea) were studied during June 1982–December 1983 from a bog stream in Wisconsin, USA. Chaetogaster diastrophus primarily ingested diatoms, while D. digitata and D. nivea primarily ingested detritus. Dietary overlap was substantial (97–98%) between D. digitata and D. nivea using the dietary overlap coefficient. Dietary overlap between C. diastrophus and D. digitata was 58–62% and that between C. diastrophus and D. nivea was 51–55%. Dietary differences existed between the three species in the percentage of each major food type and diatom genera ingested, selective ingestion or avoidance of diatom genera and in the size classes (length and/or volume) of diatoms consumed. These data suggest temporal coexistence of these species may possibly be due to complex food resource partitioning, although in this habitat, C. diastrophus, D. digitata, and D. nivea did not exhibit concurrent peak abundances; thus, interspecific competition for food was minimized.  相似文献

We describe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and conditions to amplify eight dinucleotide, one trinucleotide and 14 tetranucleotide microsatellite DNA loci isolated from the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). The PCR primers were tested on 16 individuals collected from a population located within the Red Hills region of south Georgia and north Florida. The 23 primer pairs developed in this study yielded an average of 6.5 alleles per locus (range 2–11), an average observed heterozygosity of 0.47 (range 0.06–0.94) and average polymorphic information content of 0.60 (range 0.06–0.85).  相似文献

Exceptional fossil specimens with preserved soft parts from the Maotianshan Shale (ca 520 Myr ago) and the Burgess Shale (505 Myr ago) biotas indicate that the worldwide distributed bivalved arthropod Isoxys was probably a non-benthic visual predator. New lines of evidence come from the functional morphology of its powerful prehensile frontal appendages that, combined with large spherical eyes, are thought to have played a key role in the recognition and capture of swimming or epibenthic prey. The swimming and steering of this arthropod was achieved by the beating of multiple setose exopods and a flap-like telson. The appendage morphology of Isoxys indicates possible phylogenetical relationships with the megacheirans, a widespread group of assumed predator arthropods characterized by a pre-oral ‘great appendage’. Evidence from functional morphology and taphonomy suggests that Isoxys was able to migrate through the water column and was possibly exploiting hyperbenthic niches for food. Although certainly not unique, the case of Isoxys supports the idea that off-bottom animal interactions such as predation, associated with complex feeding strategies and behaviours (e.g. vertical migration and hunting) were established by the Early Cambrian. It also suggests that a prototype of a pelagic food chain had already started to build-up at least in the lower levels of the water column.  相似文献

Most previous studies of food selection by fishes have been conducted on visually-feeding species in relatively unstructured environments. The food selection behaviour of Sillago analis (Whitley), feeding nocturnally in a complex seagrass/mangrove environment, was assessed. Crustacean prey were relatively accessible and displayed the highest electivity values. Annelids were usually buried at least 30 mm below the substrate surface and, like potential fish prey, were either not taken or showed consistently negative electivities. Although many mollusc species were accessible, only the siphon tips of the bivalve Glauconome virens (Linnaeus) were positively selected. Results from both field and laboratory indicated that S. analis is not a strongly size-selective predator. However, in contrast to the field study, the laboratory results showed that S. analis had a strong preference for annelids [ Marphysa sanguinea (Montague)] as well as crustaceans. The food selection patterns of S. analis could not be clearly described in terms of single parameters such as prey size, prey abundance or prey energy content, which have been used in the context of optimal foraging theory and are often described as strong determinants of food selection in visual predators. Instead, this nocturnally-feeding species takes a variety of the more vulnerable prey (i.e. those which are spatially accessible, weakly motile or thinly shelled) in an apparently opportunistic fashion.  相似文献
