Aim  This study aimed to document precisely the patterns of DNA ploidy variation in the native and secondary ranges of Lythrum salicaria distribution. The hypothesis that species invasiveness had been induced by a switch in ploidy level was addressed.
Location  Europe, Middle East, North America.
Methods  DNA ploidy levels of 1884 progenies of 578+ plants collected at 124 localities were determined by DAPI flow cytometry.
Results  Large cytotype variation (2 x , 3 x , 4 x and 6 x ) was found across the native area of distribution (64 populations covering 12 European and two Middle Eastern countries). DNA hexaploids were detected for the first time, and rare DNA triploids were reliably confirmed. DNA tetraploids largely prevailed across the native range studied, while DNA diploids and DNA hexaploids were recorded only in Israel and Turkey, respectively. DNA triploid progenies occurred in one population from Hungary (together with DNA tetraploids). Sympatric growth of DNA tetraploids and DNA hexaploids was repeatedly encountered in Turkey. In contrast, cytotype uniformity was a typical feature of the invasive North American plants. Sixty populations, covering 13 states of the USA and provinces of Canada, were characterized by the presence of only DNA tetraploids.
Main conclusions  Several L. salicaria cytotypes (2 x , 3 x , 4 x , 6 x ) occur in the native range of distribution, with much variation concentrated in the Middle Eastern countries, whereas only DNA tetraploids appeared to occur in North America. Our data show that the invasive spread of North American populations was not triggered by differences in ploidy level. Alternative explanations should be sought.  相似文献

In North America, the geographic distributions of diploid and tetraploid Chamerion (formerly Epilobium) angustifolium overlap in a narrow zone along the southern border of the boreal forest and along the Rocky Mountains. We examined the frequency and distribution of diploid and tetraploid cytotypes in a narrow (5 km) zone of sympatry across an elevational gradient and in putatively uniform diploid and tetraploid reference populations on the Beartooth Pass, in the Rocky Mountains of southern Montana-northern Wyoming. All five reference populations sampled were dominated by a single cytotype, but only one was completely uniform. In the zone of sympatry, 27 transects were sampled every 2 m for a total of 238 plants. Reproductive status (vegetative, flower buds, open flowers) was recorded, and the ploidy of each plant was determined by flow cytometry. Diploid and tetraploid plants predominated (36 and 55%, respectively) but were heterogeneously distributed among the transects. Six of the 27 transects were fixed for a single cytotype (four transects, diploid; two transects, tetraploid), and in seven others either diploids or tetraploids predominated (frequency >75%). Triploids represented 9% of the total sample and occurred most frequently in transects containing both diploids and tetraploids (G = 3.4, df = 2, P = 0.07). Diploids were more often reproductive (in bud, flower, or fruit) than either triploids or tetraploids (G = 12.0, df = 2, P < 0.001) and were the only cytotype to have produced open flowers. These results suggest that the zone of sympatry is best characterized as a mosaic rather than a cline, with diploid and tetraploids in close proximity and that the distribution of polyploidy is regulated by ecological sorting in a heterogeneous physical environment.  相似文献

Effect of triploid fitness on the coexistence of diploids and tetraploids   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The conditions for the coexistence of diploids, triploids and tetraploids in a single population were investigated with a deterministic model under the assumptions that diploids might produce 2 n gametes, and that triploids had a lower fitness than other cytotypes and generated equal proportions of haploid and diploid gametes. When diploids produced only haploid gametes, the dynamics of the cytotypes were similar to that of heterozygote disadvantage with two alleles at a single locus, with triploids being equivalent to the heterozygotes. Production of 2 n gametes by diploids increased the pool of diploid gametes and created a stable equilibrium involving a majority of diploids and a minority of polyploids. When the fitness of tetraploids was equal to or higher than that of diploids, increased triploid fitness decreased the threshold of 2 n gametes necessary to deterministically fix tetraploids in the population. Conversely, when tetraploids were less fit than diploids, the rate of 2 n gamete production leading to the exclusion of diploids first decreases and then increased with increasing triploid fitness. Triploids are repeatedly found in diploid-tetraploid hybridizations and are rarely totally sterile. They might play a determinant role in the future of multiple cytotype populations. The effect of triploids depends on the relative fitness of diploids and tetraploids and is also a function of their fitness.  相似文献

Background and Aims Allopolyploidy and intraspecific heteroploid crosses are associated, in certain groups, with changes in the mating system. The genus Sorbus represents an appropriate model to study the relationships between ploidy and reproductive mode variations. Diploid S. aria and tetraploid apomictic S. austriaca were screened for ploidy and mating system variations within pure and sympatric populations in order to gain insights into their putative causalities. Methods Flow cytometry was used to assess genome size and ploidy level among 380 S. aria s.l. and S. austriaca individuals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 303 single-seed flow cytometric seed screenings being performed to identify their mating system. Pollen viability and seed set were also determined.Key Results Flow cytometry confirmed the presence of di-, tri- and tetraploid cytotype mixtures in mixed-ploidy populations of S. aria and S. austriaca. No ploidy variation was detected in single-species populations. Diploid S. aria mother plants always produced sexually originated seeds, whereas tetraploid S. austriaca as well as triploid S. aria were obligate apomicts. Tetraploid S. aria preserved sexuality in a low portion of plants. A tendency towards a balanced 2m : 1p parental genome contribution to the endosperm was shared by diploids and tetraploids, regardless of their sexual or asexual origin. In contrast, most triploids apparently tolerated endosperm imbalance. Conclusions Coexistence of apomictic tetraploids and sexual diploids drives the production of novel polyploid cytotypes with predominantly apomictic reproductive modes. The data suggest that processes governing cytotype diversity and mating system variation in Sorbus from Bosnia and Herzegovina are probably parallel to those in other diversity hotspots of this genus. The results represent a solid contribution to knowledge of the reproduction of Sorbus and will inform future investigations of the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in triggering and regulating cytotype diversity and alteration of reproductive modes.  相似文献

The local differentiation of a model group,Galium pumilum agg., was studied in serpentine versus non-serpentine habitats in the Czech Republic and adjacent regions in Austria, Germany and Poland. Serpentine habitats form ecologically distinct islands within the landscape; local micro-evolutionary processes may be important there, both because of small population sizes and the strong selection effects of the metal-rich soils. TheGalium pumilum agg. is a group of taxa showing typical karyological and ecological differentiation; the following species and cytotypes were studied:Galium pumilum Murray (2n=8x=88),G. valdepilosum Heinr. Braun (2n=2x=22, 2n=4x=44),G. sudeticum Tausch (2n=4x=44) andG. austriacum Jacq. (2n=4x=44). The karyological and taxonomic investigation showed that serpentine versus non-serpentine habitats do not play an important role in the differentiation of the species studied. (1) The examined populations ofG. pumilum Murray were homogeneous in chromosome numbers, belonging to the octoploid (2n=88) cytotype only. (2)G. valdepilosum consists of two cytotypes. Both of them occur on and off serpentine sites, but they show pronounced East-West distributional difference. (3)G. sudeticum occupies special localities on serpentine in western Bohemia, which are geographically isolated from its nearest localities in the Krkono?e Mts. The plants coming from both localities belong to the tetraploid cytotype. (4) A highly polyploid plant (2n=12x=ca. 132) from theG. pumilum group was found on serpentine. From the methodological point of view, pollen size turned out to be reliable only for distinguishing octoploids from diploids and tetraploids, but it is less suitable for separating the latter two ploidy levels. The occurrence ofG. austriacum is reported for the Czech Republic for the first time with certainty. This record extends the known distribution area ofG. austriacum in the NW direction.  相似文献

The role of polyploidy in facilitating invasiveness of introduced plants has not been well explored. Examination of traits of diploid and polyploid plants in both their native and introduced ranges can shed light on evolutionary processes occurring postintroduction in invasive plants. We determined the distribution and prevalence of cytotypes of Solidago gigantea in both its native range (USA) and introduced range (Europe), and measured a suite of biochemical, physiological, and reproductive characters for plants from both continents. Tetraploids were the most frequent cytotype encountered on both continents, while hexaploids were found only in the USA. Hexaploids were the most distinctive cytotype, with fewer differences observed between diploids and tetraploids. Comparison of diploids and tetraploids in the USA and Europe showed that traits changed in concert for both cytotypes. Both diploids and tetraploids in Europe had reduced concentrations of three classes of secondary chemical and invested relatively more into rhizomes than into flowers. The same changes occurring in both cytotypes in the introduced range show that altered phenotypes of European plants are not due to shifts in the proportions of cytotypes but instead occur within them. There was no evidence that polyploids evolve more quickly in the introduced range.  相似文献

? Premise of the Study: Polyploidy resulting from whole genome duplication has contributed to the adaptive evolution of many plant species. However, the conditions necessary for successful polyploid evolution and subsequent establishment and persistence in sympatry with diploid progenitors are often quite limited. One condition thought to be necessary for establishment is a substantial competitive superiority of the polyploid. ? Methods: We conducted a pairwise competition experiment using diploid and tetraploid cytotypes of Centaurea stoebe L. to determine whether (1) tetraploids have greater competitive ability than diploids, (2) cytotypes from mixed-cytotype populations have more balanced competitive abilities than single-cytotype populations, and (3) competitive abilities change along a longitudinal gradient. ? Key Results: Across sampling localities, tetraploids did not produce greater aboveground biomass than diploids but suffered from greater intracytotypic competition. Tetraploids allocated greater biomass belowground than diploids, regardless of competition treatment, and had greater performance for traits associated with long-term persistence (bolted more frequently and produced more accessory rosettes). Competitive ability of tetraploids did not differ between single- and mixed-cytotype populations but varied along a longitudinal gradient. Tetraploids were stronger intercytotypic competitors in Western Europe (Switzerland and Germany) than in Eastern Europe (Hungary and Slovakia), which indicates that cytotype coexistence may be more likely in Eastern Europe, the proposed origin of tetraploids, than in Western Europe. ? Conclusions: Our study addresses the importance of examining competitive interactions between cytotypes across their distributional range, as competitive interactions were not consistent across sampling localities.  相似文献

Ploidy levels sometimes vary among individuals or populations, particularly in plants. When such variation exists, accurate determination of cytotype can inform studies of ecology or trait variation and is required for population genetic analyses. Here, we propose and evaluate a statistical approach for distinguishing low‐level ploidy variants (e.g. diploids, triploids and tetraploids) based on genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) data. The method infers cytotypes based on observed heterozygosity and the ratio of DNA sequences containing different alleles at thousands of heterozygous SNPs (i.e. allelic ratios). Whereas the method does not require prior information on ploidy, a reference set of samples with known ploidy can be included in the analysis if it is available. We explore the power and limitations of this method using simulated data sets and GBS data from natural populations of aspen (Populus tremuloides) known to include both diploid and triploid individuals. The proposed method was able to reliably discriminate among diploids, triploids and tetraploids in simulated data sets, and this was true for different levels of genetic diversity, inbreeding and population structure. Power and accuracy were minimally affected by low coverage (i.e. 2×), but did sometimes suffer when simulated mixtures of diploids, autotetraploids and allotetraploids were analysed. Cytotype assignments based on the proposed method closely matched those from previous microsatellite and flow cytometry data when applied to GBS data from aspen. An R package (gbs2ploidy) implementing the proposed method is available from CRAN.  相似文献

In the northeastern part of Belgium, the Centaurea jacea complex shows extensive morphological variation and is represented by a diploid (2 n = 22) and a tetraploid (2 n = 44) cytotype. Polysomic inheritance of allozyme markers in the tetraploids, suggesting autopolyploidy, is here demonstrated for the first time. In order to test whether the two cytotypes occupy distinct habitats and possess different gene pools, patterns of allozymic and morphological variation were investigated in relation to ploidy level and site characteristics in 26 populations from the Belgian Ardennes. The two cytotypes showed a parapatric distribution, the diploids occurring at higher elevations (mostly above 500 m) than the tetraploids (mostly below 500 m). Three mixed populations were found near the contact zone of the two cytotypes. Within the mixed populations no triploid plant and no evidence for gene flow between cytotypes were found, despite widely overlapping flowering periods. The two cytotypes can be distinguished on the basis of morphological traits and enzymatic gene pools. The congruence of morphological and allozymic variation with chromosome numbers suggests a secondary contact between the two cytotypes with limited gene flow between them. The origin and persistence of the parapatric distribution are discussed.  相似文献

Flow cytometry was employed to estimate ploidy levels in Vaccinium sect. Oxycoccus. Twelve localities in the Czech Republic, Sweden and Denmark were studied in detail in order to investigate the potential sympatric growth of various cytotypes. Diploid V. microcarpum and tetraploid, pentaploid and hexaploid individuals of V. oxycoccos were found among the 296 accessions analyzed. Both species as well as various (up to all three) ploidy levels of V. oxycoccos co-occurred at the same locality. Mixed accessions (containing various cytotypes) were even ascertained on a very fine spatial scale (20 × 20 cm). Pentaploid plants of probable hybrid origin have been found in Sweden for the first time. The population growing on peat bog near Lyngby, Copenhagen (Denmark) consisted of both hexaploids and tetraploids. This site refers to the discovery of hexaploid cranberries in the late twentieths of the last century. The results represent further support for merging of all polyploid cytotypes (4x—6x) into a single taxon.  相似文献

? Premise of the study: Polyploids are often hypothesized to have distinct and broader niches than their diploid progenitors. Differences in geographic distributions between diploid and polyploids are frequently used to infer niche differentiation and increased breadth, but they are seldom used to test these hypotheses explicitly. ? Methods: Niche overlap and breadth were compared for diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids of three taxa in the Claytonia perfoliata complex (C. parviflora, C. perfoliata, and C. rubra) with the use of species distribution models. Resampling and randomization approaches were used to test hypotheses of niche differentiation, breadth, and conservatism. ? Key results: Niche differentiation was detected between polyploid and diploid cytotypes assigned to the same taxon (e.g., C. parviflora 2× vs. 4×) but not between hexaploids and tetraploids within a taxon (e.g., C. parviflora 4× vs. 6×). Individual hexaploid cytotypes had broader ecological niches than individual diploid cytotypes. However, as a group the three hexaploid taxa did not exceed the combined niche breadth of the three diploids, suggesting that polyploidy does not result in transgressive niche breadth for this group. Niche overlap was lowest among diploids and was highest among the three hexaploid cytotypes, consistent with introgression associated with polyploidy resulting in greater ecological similarity. Although cytotypes possessed nonidentical niches, after accounting for environmental differences among ranges, cytotypes were more similar than expected, suggesting niche conservatism and similar responses to environmental characteristics. ? Conclusions: These results suggest that polyploids occupy distinct and broader niches relative to diploids but that cytotypes also share fundamentally similar responses to environmental variation across ploidy levels.  相似文献

Summary The microdistribution of diploid and tetraploid plants of Dactylis glomerata L. was examined and related to their immediate environment in several sites in central Galicia, where morphologically indistinguishable individuals of both ploidies grow in sympatry. The two related cytotypes differed in habitat preference. Diploids were mainly confined to the low-density forest-floor habitat in woodlands of mostly ancient origin, whereas tetraploids were widespread in varied habitats but clearly predominant in open areas, particularly in disturbed anthropic sites. The in situ comparison of plant performance showed that where plants of each ploidy were more common they produced more tillers, panicles and seeds. This habitat preference closely reflected differences in life-history characteristics. The tetraploids had an early and short flowering time almost always completed before the aestival drought, whereas the diploids began to flower several weeks later and flowered throughout the drought. Comparisons along artificial gradients of soil water availability and light transmittance indicated that the cytotypes had distinct physiological requirements which probably originated in metabolic and more general genetic differentiation and could be directly attributable to ploidy. Habitat differentiation increases the species' colonizing ability. It also amplifies divergence in reproductive strategy between diploids and tetraploids, which reduces ineffective crossing between cytotypes and thereby permits them to coexist in sympatry. The effect of hybridization at the polyploid level on the differentiation between cytotypes was assessed from the recent introduction of a foreign tetraploid entity into the study area. Hybridization between the two distinct tetraploids was found to increase habitat differentiation between the diploids and the tetraploids, but the major part of this differentiation is probably attributable to ploidy itself.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether diploid, triploid and tetraploid loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) differed in terms of their main haematological and physiological characteristics. Diploid and tetraploid fish were produced by crossing of natural diploids (2n x 2n) and natural tetraploids (4n x 4n), respectively. Triploid fish were produced by hybridization between diploid males and tetraploid females. The blood cells were significantly larger in polyploids, and the volumetric ratios of erythrocytes and leucocytes (thrombocyte and neutrophil) in tetraploids, triploids and diploids were consistent with the ploidy level ratio of 4:3:2. No significant differences were observed in haematocrit among polyploids. The erythrocyte count decreased with increased ploidy level, while total haemoglobin, mean cell volume, mean cellular haemoglobin content, and mean cell haemoglobin concentration all increased with increase in ploidy level. Erythrocyte osmotic brittleness declined in polyploids so that polyploid erythrocytes were more resistant to osmotic stress than diploid ones. Overall, loach with higher ploidy levels showed evidence of some advantages in haematological characteristics.  相似文献

Reproductive behaviour and the pathways of gene flow among ploidy levels were studied experimentally inTaraxacum sect.Ruderalia. Diploid, triploid and tetraploid individuals were sampled from mixed diploid — polyploid natural populations. 136 experimental hybridizations between the plants of different ploidy levels were performed. Seeds resulting from these crosses, those obtained from isolated anthodia as well as from open pollinated anthodia (both from cultivated and wild plants) were subjected to the flow-cytometric seed screening (FCSS) to determine ploidy levels in the progeny and to infer breeding behaviour of maternal plants. Three possible pathways of the gene flow were studied: (A) fertilization of sexuals by pollen of apomicts, (B) BIII hybrid formation, (C) facultative apomixis. Diploid maternal plants when experimentally crossed with triploid pollen donors produced diploids and polyploid progeny, while when pollinated with a mixture of the pollen of diploids and triploids or insect pollinated, no polyploids were discovered. It seems that in the mixture with the pollen of diploids, the pollen of triploids is ineffective. Tetraploids produce hybrids much easier with diploid mothers and their role in wild populations requires further study. Triploid mothers, even those with subregular pollen did not show traces of facultative apomixis. BIII hybrids were present in the progeny of both triploids and tetraploids, in tetraploids in quite high percentages (up to 50% of the progeny in some crosses).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess genome size variation and multivariate morphometric analyses to ascertain cytotype distribution patterns and the morphological differentiation within the Ranunculus parnassifolius group in the Pyrenees and the Alps. Although divergences in nuclear DNA content among different species within a genus are widely acknowledged, intraspecific variation is still a somewhat controversial issue. Holoploid and monoploid genome sizes (C‐ and Cx‐values) were determined using propidium iodide flow cytometry in 125 plants of R. parnassifolius s.l. distributed across four European countries. Three different DNA ploidy levels were revealed in the study area: diploid (2n ~ 2x, 57.14%), triploid (2n ~ 3x, 1.19%), and tetraploid (2n ~ 4x, 41.67%). The mean population 2C‐values ranged from 8.15 pg in diploids to 14.80 pg in tetraploids, representing a ratio of 1 : 1.8. Marked intraspecific/interpopulation differences in nuclear DNA content were found. Diploid populations prevail in the Pyrenees, although tetraploid cytotypes were reported throughout the distribution area. In general, mixed‐cytotype populations were not found. The Spearman correlation coefficient did not reveal significant correlations between genome size and altitude, longitude, or latitude. Morphometric analyses and cluster analyses based on genome size variation revealed the presence of three major groups, which exhibited a particular biogeographical pattern. A new cytotype, DNA triploid, was found for the first time. Tetraploid populations showed constant nuclear DNA levels, whereas diploid populations from the Pyrenees, in which introgressive hybridization is suggested as a presumable trigger for genome size variation, did not. Scenarios for the evolution of geographical parthenogenesis in R. parnassifolius s.l. are discussed. Finally, the different levels of effectiveness between plant and animal reference standards are analysed. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 251–271.  相似文献

Reproductive isolation via apomixis is one way for newly created cytotypes to persist and coexist with other cytotypes. Arnica cordifolia (Asteraceae) has both triploid and tetraploid cytotypes co-occurring in many locations. The rate of apomixis in each cytotype was explored as a mechanism for the maintenance of sympatric cytotypes. Flow cytometry was used on both adults and seeds from mixed cytotype populations to estimate reproductive mode and to evaluate the relationship between cytotype frequency and reproductive success. Flowering time was surveyed to look for temporal reproductive isolation between cytotypes. Both triploids and tetraploids can be asexual. Apomixis in A. cordifolia is usually autonomous, not pseudogamous as previously thought. Sexual reproduction appears to be uncommon. The minority cytotype in each population does not produce fewer seeds, confirming that minority cytotype exclusion is unlikely to occur via reproductive disadvantage. Triploids flowered earlier than tetraploids, but with much overlap. Asexual reproduction is an important factor promoting the coexistence of cytotypes in this system. Other mechanisms maintaining populations of sympatric cytotypes are not well studied or understood and warrant further investigation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Polyploidy is viewed as an important mechanism of sympatric speciation, but only a few studies have documented patterns of distribution and ecology of different cytotypes in their contact zone. Aster amellus agg. (Asteraceae) is one of the species with documented multiple ploidy levels. The aim of this study was to determine spatial distribution and ecology of two cytotypes, diploid (2n = 18) and hexaploid (2n = 54), of Aster amellus agg. at their contact zone in the Czech Republic. METHODS: Root-tip squashes and flow cytometry were used to determine the ploidy of 2175 individuals from 87 populations. To test whether some differences in ecology between the two ploidy levels exist, in each locality relevés were recorded and abiotic conditions of the sites were studied by estimating potential direct solar radiation, Ellenberg indicator values and above-ground biomass. KEY RESULTS: Together with diploid and hexaploids, minorite cytotypes (triploid, pentaploid and nonaploid) were found. No significant ecological differences between diploid and hexaploid cytotypes were found. In spite of this, no population consisting of both of the two basic cytotypes was found. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show that the contact zone of diploid and hexaploid cytotypes in the Czech Republic is much more diffuse than indicated in previous records. Although populations of both cytotypes occur in close proximity (the closest populations of different cytotypes were 500 m apart), each individual population consists of only one basic ploidy level. This was unexpected since there are no clear differences in abiotic conditions between populations. Taken together with the absence of an intermediate tetraploid cytotype and with reference to published world distributional patterns of different ploidy levels, this suggests a secondary contact zone. Detailed genetic study is, however, necessary to confirm this.  相似文献

Polyploidy is the most common chromosomal mechanism involved in the evolution of plants. However, the emergence of polyploid individuals does not guarantee the establishment of a new lineage, and the relationship between polyploidy and reproductive biology is therefore relevant. Libidibia ferrea is a legume tree that has diploid and tetraploid populations. In this work we analyse the reproductive biology of the species to verify the degree of reproductive isolation between the two cytotypes. Observations on phenology, floral morphology, biology, and visitors, breeding system, reproductive success and reproductive isolation were made for both cytotypes in two municipalities of northeastern Brazil. Cytotypes differed for all morphometric parameters analysed, with tetraploids exhibiting higher mean values than diploids. Both cytotypes had the same effective pollinators (native bees from the genera Centris and Xylocopa, and the introduced Apis mellifera). However, since stamens of diploids and tetraploids were of different size, it is possible that spatial separation occurs when pollen of each cytotype is deposited on a bee’s body. Diploids were self-incompatible (ISI?=?0) and exhibited high fruit-set after intraploidy crossing (20?%), whereas tetraploids were self-compatible (ISI?=?0.47) and set only 3.9?% of fruits after intraploidy crossing. Both cytotypes showed low fruit- and seed-set under natural conditions, and there was no fruit-set after crosses between them. Data are discussed in relation to the establishment of polyploids, to the pattern of distribution of the species and to the taxonomic implications. The cytotypes of L. ferrea should be considered as distinct species, since they are reproductively isolated from each other.  相似文献

Experimental crosses between diploids, triploids and tetraploids ofHieracium echioides were made to examine mating interactions. Specifically, cytotype diversity in progeny from experimental crosses, intercytotype pollen competition as a reproductive barrier between diploids and tetraploids, and differences in seed set between intra- and intercytotype crosses were studied. Only diploids were found in progeny from 2x × 2x crosses. The other types of crosses yielded more than one cytotype in progeny, but one cytotype predominated in each cross type: diploids (92%) in 2x × 3x crosses, tetraploids (88%) in 3x × 2x crosses, triploids (96%) in 2x × 4x crosses, triploids (90%) in 4x × 2x crosses, tetraploids (60%) in 3x × 3x crosses, pentaploids (56%) in 3x × 4x crosses, triploids (80%) in 4x × 3x crosses and tetraploids (88%) in 4x × 4x crosses. No aneuploids have been detected among karyologically analyzed plants. Unreduced egg cell production was detected in triploids and tetraploids, but formation of unreduced pollen was recorded only in two cases in triploids. Triploid plants produced x, 2x and 3x gametes: in male gametes x (92%) gametes predominated whereas in female gametes 3x (88%) gametes predominated. Cytotype diversity in progeny from crosses where diploids and tetraploids were pollinated by mixture of pollen from diploid and tetraploid plants suggested intercytotype pollen competition to serve as a prezygotic reproductive barrier. No statistically significant difference in seed set obtained from intra- and intercytotype crosses between diploids and tetraploids was observed, suggesting the absence of postzygotic reproductive barriers among cytotypes.  相似文献
