Summary The circadian rhythm of sensitivity in the median eyes ofAndroctonus australis L. can be entrained by exposure of the lateral eyes to a 24-h light-dark rhythm. Presentation of the Zeitgeber to only the anteriormost one of the lateral eyes sufficed (Fig. 1). However, with illumination of an entire group of lateral eyes (Fig. 2), entrainment was obtained at extremely low light intensities — white light at luminance levels of 10–4cd · m–2 (=2.5 · 10–4 lux, cf. A new albinistic allele in the cat is described and designated blue-eyed albino (symbol c a ). The coat is completely white. The eyes possess a dull red pupil in reduced light and a pale translucent blue iris. Reasons are given for regarding the allele as less extreme than complete albinism. The inheritance of three members of the albino series in the cat has now been reported. In decreasing order of dominance these are full colour (C), Burmese (c b ), Siamese (c s ) and blue-eyed albino (c a ).  相似文献

The phenotypic interaction of three mutant genes Ba, Ds and Wh are quantatively analysed for proportion of white areas in the coat. Each of the genes individually induces a characteristic amount of white spotting which is synergistically enhanced in combination. A variegated position effect on the autonomous gene, purple, has been studied enzymologically in Drosophila melanogaster. Sepiapterin synthase, the enzyme system associated with pr +, was examined for activity in different developmental stages of the fly. The results indicate that T(Y:2) pr c5, cn/prc4 cn flies (flies in which pr + has been translocated and which exhibit variegation) have a reduced amount of enzyme activity as compared with both Oregon-R and pr 1 flies. This reduction in activity was not found in larval stages, which suggests that the inactivation process probably occurs in late larval or early pupal stages. The phenotype of the variegated adult has white eyes with red-colored spots and patches where drosopterins occur. The phenotype of the fly carrying the translocation is modified by the presence of additional Y chromosomes. This extends the observation from other systems that extra heterochromatin acts to suppress the variegated position effect. The advantages of studying the variegation by measuring enzyme activity, as well as the phenotypic expression, are several; for example, the developmental time at which variegation occurs may be estimated even though drosopterin synthesis is not occurring.The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is operated by Union Carbide Corporation for the Department of Energy under Contract No. W-7405-eng-26.  相似文献

Aim of the present study was to characterize the pituitary GnRH receptor in white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, using a superagonist analog of mammalian GnRH [D‐Ala6, des‐Gly10–Pro9]‐ethylamide and to investigate the possible effect of estradiol‐17β treatment on the concentration and affinity of the GnRH receptor in immature white sturgeon. The binding of 125I‐GnRH‐A to sturgeon pituitary receptors was rapid and saturable at 4°C and 20°C. However, maximal binding at 20°C was almost two‐fold greater than the highest binding noted at 4°C. Specific binding of radioligand was directly related to the amount of tissue included in the assay system over the range of 5–20 mg fresh tissue equivalents per ml. The binding capacity of 125I‐GnRH‐A with sturgeon pituitary tissue was much greater than radiolabeled GnRH. Administration of E2 to immature sturgeon caused an almost two‐fold increase in GnRH‐A binding capacity (E2 treated: Bmax = 2.87 fmoles 3 mg?1 FTE; control: Bmax = 1.70 fmoles 3 mg?1), and did not affect GnRH‐A binding affinity (E2 treated: Ka = 0.13 × 1011 m ?1; control: Ka = 0.15 × 1011 m ?1). Overall, the study provides evidence that the GnRH analog is effective for characterizing the GnRH receptor in white sturgeon; however, more experimentation is necessary to determine whether E2 administration to immature white sturgeon can increase the GnRH receptor capacity.  相似文献

By rearing fish in various monochromatic illuminations we investigated (1) the potential for compensation of refractive error due to chromatic aberration, (2) the contributions of the chromatic channels to emmetropization, and (3) the role of color cues in the control of eye growth. Cichlid fish (Aequidens pulcher) were reared for 6 months (12 h light/12 h dark) in monochromatic lights (623.5, 534.1, 485.0 nm; spectral purity 5–10 nm). Light levels were isoirradiant at 1.1·1012 quanta/s/cm2. Two control groups were reared in white light with down-welling illuminances of 0.2 and 33 lx. Nasotemporal diameters (NTDs) of the eyes were measured in relation to lens size. Due to the oblique axis of highest acuity vision in cichlids, NTD is considered to be a more important dimension than axial length. Variances in NTD were equally small in all rearing groups. NTDs were enlarged with increasing wavelengths of the rearing lights with highly significant values over controls in the red-light group. The wavelength-dependent size of the eyes matched the changes in focal length due to longitudinal chromatic aberration. Complete recovery from eye enlargement was observed after fish reared in red light were exposed to a white light regime for 5 weeks. Small variances in NTD in all groups indicated stringent control of eye growth in the absence of color cues. The reversibility of the increase in NTD in fish reared in red light suggests that the eyes were emmetropized by visually guided mechanisms. Eye size in fish reared in white light was intermediate between the values expected if only blue-sensitive single or the red- and green-sensitive double cones contributed to the control of eye growth. This suggests that all chromatic channels participate in emmetropizing the fish eye.  相似文献

Summary An unstable long tandem duplication which includes the white locus twice, marked with w sp in the left and w 17G in the right locus, when kept in males has been found to produce red-eyed sons which have lost the long duplication and with it the w sp and w 17G mutants. Such exceptions were produced also when w 17G had been exchanged for w a.Stocks originating from these exceptions are unstable, producing: 1) zeste males, also unstable, 2) w - deletions, stable, 3) transpositions of the white locus to sites in other chromosomes.The instability is interpreted as the effect of an IS element, within or adjacent to the white locus, which is supposed to retain a duplication of the proximal zeste interacting part of this locus. According to the orientation of the IS element the duplicated part can be active or inactive, giving a zeste or red eye phenotype.The frequency of exceptional offspring after X-ray treatment of the red and zeste unstable stocks have been compared to stable stocks with corresponding genotypes.  相似文献

To generate a mouse line which allows inducible, Cre/loxP‐dependent recombination in adipocytes, we used RedE/RedT‐mediated recombineering to insert the CreERT2‐transgene, which encodes a fusion protein of Cre and a mutated tamoxifen‐responsive estrogen receptor, into the start codon of the adipocyte‐specific Adipoq gene. Adipoq encodes adiponectin, an adipokine specifically expressed in differentiated adipocytes. Tamoxifen treatment induced almost complete recombination in white adipose tissue of the AdipoqCreERT2 mouse line (97%–99%), while no recombination was seen in vehicle‐treated animals. Recombination in brown adipose tissue was about 15%, whereas other organs and tissues did not undergo recombination. In addition, mice expressing CreERT2 in adipocytes did not show any alterations of metabolic functions like glucose tolerance, lipolysis, or energy expenditure compared to control mice. When tributyltin oxide (TBTO) was tested by British Standard 3653 against Lyctus brunneus, 0·5 % solution, equivalent to 0·72 g/m2 surface application, gave almost complete protection. Tests to BS 3651, using larvae of Anobium punctatum transferred into fully impregnated wood gave toxic limits of 1·39–2·93 kg/m3 TBTO when benzene was used as diluent. The use of white spirit as diluent gave lower toxic limits, probably due to combined toxic action of TBTO and white spirit residues. TBTO appears to have no contact action against the insects tested. Probit analysis of the test with A. punctatum gave an LD 50 of 0·254 kg/m3 and an LD99 of 3 kg/m3. The advantage of treating results by probit analysis rather than by deriving ‘toxic limits’ is discussed.  相似文献

Photo-reception and sensitivity to light were studied in two Japanese hagfishes,Eptatretus burgeri living in shallow water andParamyxine atami living in water of about 100m depth. Both species responded to general illumination by first moving the tail or head and then by swimming. Local illumination revealed that regions most sensitive to light were the skin of the tail in both species and a line of unpigmented skin running down the back ofE. burgeri. The light sensitivity of the lensless eyes, which are situated below the skin, was very weak in both species.P. atami showed shorter reaction time to light thanE. burgeri. No change in skin colour was induced either by almost complete hypophysectomy or by continuous illumination against a white background. Under-water observations with SCUBA revealed that free movingE. burgeri responded well to illumination uncovered during the night, but the ones buried in mud, with only the heads uncovered did not.  相似文献

Summary Third-instar larvae of different genotypes were exposed to X-radiation of various doses, and survival was scored separately for the sexes and genotypes. Most of the observed correlations agree with the hypothesis that somatic radiation damage was exclusively or almost exclusively due to chromosome breakage followed by chromosome loss, cellular damage or death resulting whenever a portion of the genome was no longer represented in at least haploid condition. Monosomaty for either of the long autosomes does not appear to be detrimental to somatic cells. Although the spectral quality of light in the ocean varies considerably with depth, the effect of light quality on different physiological processes in marine phytoplankton remains largely unknown. In cases where experiments are performed under full spectral irradiance, the meaning of these experiments in situ is thus unclear. In this study, we determined whether variations in spectral quality affected the sinking rates of marine diatoms. Semicontinuous batch cultures of Thalassiosira weissflogii (Gru.) Fryxell et Hasle and Ditylum brightwellii (t. West) Grunow in Van Huerk were grown under continuous red, white, or blue light. For T. weissflogii, sinking rates (SETCOL method) were twice as high (~0.2 m·d?1)for cells grown under red light as for cells grown under white or blue light (~0.08 m·d?1), but there were no significant differences in carbohydrate content (~105 fg·μm?3) or silica content (~ 17 fg·μ?3) to account for the difference in sinking rates. Thalassiosira weissflogii grown under blue light was significantly smaller (495 μm3) than cells grown under red light (661 μm3), which could contribute to its reduced sinking rate. However, cells grown under white light were similar in size to those grown under red light but had sinking rates not different from those of cells grown under blue light, indicating the involvement of factors other than size. There were no significant differences in sinking rate (~0.054 m·d?1) or silica content (~20 fg·μm?3) in D. brightwellii grown under red, white, or blue light, but cells grown under red light were significantly (20%) larger and contained significantly (20%) more carbohydrate per μm3 than cells grown under white or blue light. Spectral quality had no consistent effect on sinking rate, biochemical composition (carbohydrate or silica content), or cell volume in the two diatoms studied. The similarity in sinking rate of cells grown under white light compared to those grown under blue light supports the ecological validity of sinking rate studies done under white light.  相似文献

The white and topaz eye color mutants of L. cuprina are defective in the production of the brown screening pigment xanthommatin. Both white and topaz mutants were found to be unable to accumulate xanthommatin precursors in the larval malpighian tubules, correlating with their reduced early pupal level of this metabolite. In addition, white mutants showed reduced rates of accumulation of kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine in the adult eyes. Another mutant strain, grape, was also defective in its ability to accumulate these xanthommatin precursors in the eyes, although accumulation was normal in the larval tubules. In contrast, the topaz mutants were found to be normal in eye accumulation, although tubule accumulation was markedly abnormal. These properties of the white and topaz mutants of L. cuprina are compared with those of the white and scarlet mutants of D. melanogaster, and it seems likely that in the two species these genes are involved with the uptake or storage of xanthommatin precursors in specific tissues.This work was supported by Grant D2 75/15248 from the Australian Research Grants Committee.  相似文献

The combined effects of soil water deficit and above and below ground interspecific plant competition on the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and measured carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) values of white clover and ryegrass were studied. White clover and ryegrass were grown in specially designed crates 1) individually; 2) in shoot competition; or 3) in shoot + root competition and either well-watered or at a moderate or severe soil water deficit. The effects of shoot + root competition on shoot dry matter growth were substantial and benefited both white clover and ryegrass when well-watered or at a moderate soil water deficit, while severely reducing white clover shoot dry matter growth at severe soil water deficit. Plant competition did not affect the WUE of white clover or ryegrass. As soil water deficit increased, the WUE of white clover did not change whereas the WUE of ryegrass increased and was greater than that of white clover. This was attributed to the lower leaf water conductance of ryegrass which conserved water and maintained growth longer compared to white clover. A stronger correlation existed between soil water deficit and measured δ13C values for ryegrass at each plant competition level (P<0.001) than existed for white clover (individual: P<0.01; shoot + root: P<0.001; shoot: P<0.10). Unlike white clover, the relationship between measured δ13C values and shoot dry matter growth indicated that C assimilation for ryegrass was dependent on type of plant competition. That WUE remained constant for white clover while measured δ13C values increased as soil water deficit increased, suggests that the role below ground respiration rate played in determining δ13C values increased. The WUE of white clover appears to be independent of the nature of the competition between plants and the soil water deficit level at which it is grown, whereas for ryegrass, the addition of root competition to shoot competition should lead to increases in its WUE. The effects of fusicoccin on the germination of dormant, light-requiring or abscisic acid-inhibited seeds has been investigated. (1) Fusicoccin (10?6M) induces germination in dormant wheat seeds (Triticum durum cv. Cappelli; 1972 crop) and stimulates it in seeds already relieved from dormancy (1971 crop), with an effect similar to that of gibberellic acid. (2) Fusicoccin (1.5 × 10?6M) is more active than the two phytohormones gibberellic acid and benzyladenine and than white light in stimulating light-requiring lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa cv. Grand Rapids) to germinate. Germination of radish seeds (Raphanus sativus) is also accelerated by fusicoccin, while benzyladenine and gibberellic acid are less active in this material. (3) Fusicoccin (1.5 × 10?5M) removes almost completely the inhibitory effect of abscisic acid on germination of radish and lettuce seeds, whereas benzyladenine (10?4M) and gibberellic acid (3 × 10?4M) remove the inhibition only partially. The possible relationship between these results and previous information on growth by cell enlargement is discussed in terms of the mechanism of action of fusicoccin as compared with natural hormones.  相似文献

Summary Addition of heterochromatin suppresses while subtraction enhances position effect variegation. The heterochromatin-sensitive period has been determined in white/white-apricot variegated eyes of Y S w a /w a ; Dp (1;3) w 265-58 flies. When such larvae, carrying a Y-short (Y S ) arm at the distal end of one X chromosome, are X-rayed, mitotic recombination leads to one daughter cell with two Y S arms and an adjacent daughter cell with no Y S arm. When induced after clonal initiation, the frequency of dark clones developing from daughter cells with two Y S arms is significantly higher than the frequency of dark clones in the rest of the eye; and this frequency is. even higher when induced before clonal initiation. The modifying action of the Y-heterochromatin is exerted, therefore, during and after clonal initiation. Surprisingly, the frequency of dark clones developing from cells with no Y S arm is not lower than the frequency of dark clones in the rest of the eye.  相似文献

Michelia sonlaensis Q.N. Vu, a new species of Michelia from Son La province, northern Vietnam is described. The new species is assigned to the genus Michelia (separated from Magnolia), subfamily Magnolioideae based on general morphology. It is closely similar to M. xianianhei and M. mannii, but differs mainly in having a leaf‐lamina that is elliptic, thinly leathery, larger, with lower surface yellowish white villous (easily visible by eyes and feeling by hand), brachyblasts and outside bracts yellowish‐white sericeous, flowers light green to cream white in colour, and nine tepals with the outside of all tepals silky hairy at base.  相似文献

The pathogenicity of Cylindrocarpon tonkinense in the cornea was evaluated and compared with that of Fusarium solani in rabbits. F. solani was inoculated into the right eyes of 14 rabbits and C. tonkinense was into the left eyes of same rabbits. The corneal lesions of both eyes were examined carefully by slit lamp every day for three weeks and the severity of infections were compared each other. For histopathologic study, several eyes were enucleated periodically. C. tonkinense has a pathogenicity equally strong as F. solani in this inculum size (104 microconidia per cornea) and produced severe infection in rabbit eyes.  相似文献

Summary The recombinant forming ability of recB or recC strains of E. coli K12 is almost totally recovered in merozygotes which are heterozygous for a genetic locus denoted rac which is located five minutes clockwise from trp on the genetic map. This transient recovery phenomenon only occurs when the donor strain is rac + (wild type) and the recipient strain is rac -. The recombinants derived from such crosses all have the normal phenotype characteristic of recB (or recC ) strains, and they are almost always rac -. The results imply that the rac + locus (or loci) is zygotically expressed and excised from the chromosome in a manner which is analogous to the zygotic induction of a prophage.  相似文献
