Induction of anesthesia in infants and children presents many problems not present in procedures for adults. Anesthetists may better serve the patient by visiting with him on the eve of operation, not only to establish friendly relations to avoid rebellion, but to form a basis for decision as to what anesthetic agent to use and by what method it should be given. As the kind of operation and the difficulties to be expected with each are large factors in the choice of agent and technique, a number of operative situations are reviewed from this standpoint.  相似文献

Abstract  The prioritisation of potential agents on the basis of likely efficacy is an important step in biological control because it can increase the probability of a successful biocontrol program, and reduce risks and costs. In this introductory paper we define success in biological control, review how agent selection has been approached historically, and outline the approach to agent selection that underpins the structure of this special issue on agent selection. Developing criteria by which to judge the success of a biocontrol agent (or program) provides the basis for agent selection decisions. Criteria will depend on the weed, on the ecological and management context in which that weed occurs, and on the negative impacts that biocontrol is seeking to redress. Predicting which potential agents are most likely to be successful poses enormous scientific challenges. 'Rules of thumb', 'scoring systems' and various conceptual and quantitative modelling approaches have been proposed to aid agent selection. However, most attempts have met with limited success due to the diversity and complexity of the systems in question. This special issue presents a series of papers that deconstruct the question of agent choice with the aim of progressively improving the success rate of biological control. Specifically they ask: (i) what potential agents are available and what should we know about them? (ii) what type, timing and degree of damage is required to achieve success? and (iii) which potential agent will reach the necessary density, at the right time, to exert the required damage in the target environment?  相似文献

A ratio-dependent food chain model and its applications to biological control   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20  
While biological controls have been successfully and frequently implemented by nature and human, plausible mathematical models are yet to be found to explain the often observed deterministic extinctions of both pest and control agent in such processes. In this paper we study a three trophic level food chain model with ratio-dependent Michaelis-Menten type functional responses. We shall show that this model is rich in boundary dynamics and is capable of generating such extinction dynamics. Two trophic level Michaelis-Menten type ratio-dependent predator-prey system was globally and systematically analyzed in details recently. A distinct and realistic feature of ratio-dependence is its capability of producing the extinction of prey species, and hence the collapse of the system. Another distinctive feature of this model is that its dynamical outcomes may depend on initial populations levels. Theses features, if preserved in a three trophic food chain model, make it appealing for modelling certain biological control processes (where prey is a plant species, middle predator as a pest, and top predator as a biological control agent) where the simultaneous extinctions of pest and control agent is the hallmark of their successes and are usually dependent on the amount of control agent. Our results indicate that this extinction dynamics and sensitivity to initial population levels are not only preserved, but also enriched in the three trophic level food chain model. Specifically, we provide partial answers to questions such as: under what scenarios a potential biological control may be successful, and when it may fail. We also study the questions such as what conditions ensure the coexistence of all the three species in the forms of a stable steady state and limit cycle, respectively. Failures in many drug development programs in the past decades were related to unspecified mechanism of action and poor pharmacokinetic (PK) properties. Recent developments are focused on well defined targets, improved PK profiles, however, not much is known about off-target effects, especially those responsible for diminishing drug activity. Steadily increasing application of proteomics in drug development should expose clinically relevant proteins for the analysis of drug effects, to show what group of patients will respond and who should not be treated with an agent.  相似文献

Age need no longer be a barrier to operation in view of the expanding knowledge of the care of surgical patients. Blood volumes and blood components can be maintained with replacement therapy. Nutritional and vitamin requirements are better understood and carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins must be given in sufficient quantities to prevent further debilitation during the critical period following operation. It has been suggested that the usual pharmacological effects of drugs may not be applicable to elderly patients. The choice of anesthetic agent based on pharmacological effects on younger persons does not necessarily apply to the aged.  相似文献

The thought process, of course, breaks down into different elements. Thus, in problem solving, analysis articulates what is given (known) and what unknown; and analysis of information in accordance with the requirements of the particular problem leads to identification of the conditions constituting what is known and what is unknown. Each element of the thought process, viewed from the perspective of the result achieved, is a unitary act (a mental action, an operation). However, in studying thought we must not forget that what makes each element a unitary act is the objectively determined and explicit end result of the thought process. It has been generally assumed for a long time that learning is accomplished in the central nervous system (CNS) by modifying strengths of ties between neurons. Various mechanisms may contribute to this process, but it is not known which are the specific mechanisms, and what are the rules by which they operate. Theoretical models, which are based on that general assumption are introduced. The purpose of the models is to suggest plausible ways by which learned information may be stored in the neural network, and be retrieved when it is needed. The networks in the models consist of four basic subunits, in accordance with identified units in the CNS: sensing, response, feeling, and control, plus association areas. The suggested operation rules are based on established operation rules of individual neurons, and assumed rules when neurons in groups are considered. Computer simulations are done, to check the consistency of the models, and to illustrate how they work. They simulate how an hypothetical kitten learns part of its environment, and show how relevant information may be stored and retrieved in its neuronal network. The suggested mechanisms could be examined in experiments, albeit not easy ones to conduct.  相似文献

In many manufacturing systems, parts must be fed to automatic machines in a specific orientation. This is often accomplished by what are known as part-orienting systems (POSs). A POS consists of one or more separate devices that orient parts, usually with multiple orientations. A theoretical analysis along with the development of some heuristic algorithms is carried out in order to treat the problem of efficient selection and ordering of part-orienting devices that make up a POS. It is indicated that the size of such problems can be quite large in the context of flexible manufacturing systems which may require what are known as flexible part-orienting systems for their efficient operation. Computational experiments are performed in order to evaluate the relative performance of the heuristic algorithms.  相似文献

Nearly 2% of the specimens of the mudflat snail, Nassarius obsoletus, collected during June and July of 1972 from southern New Jersey has been found to be parasitized by sporocysts of the trematode Zoogonus rubellus. This parasite causes what is essentially total parasitic castration of this estuarine mollusc. The gonads of the hosts are almost completely absent and in their place, large, vacuolated Leydig cells fill the spaces not occupied by parasites on the periphery of the digestive glands. There is no doubt that the snails would have been sexually mature at the time of collection since all noninfected specimens included either fully developed ova or sperm.It is postulated that the destruction of the host's gonad has resulted from what is being designated as “direct chemical castration,” i.e., the sex cells are destroyed by some substance secreted by the parasite rather than as the result of direct mechanical damage.Since N. obsoletus also serves as the intermediate host for the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, the etiologic agent for “swimmer's itch” in the same area, the potential importance of Z. rubellus as a biological control agent against A. variglandis is raised.  相似文献

There is an urgent need for effective medicines for treating human and animal cryptosporidiosis. In the absence of drugs being found using an empirical route, the structure-based approach may be the better option for discovering new chemotherapeutic agents against these diseases. With this objective, what possible drug targets are there? Impairment of adrenal function is a great hazard to patients undergoing major operation. The most important adrenal steroids are glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone), 17-ketosteroids, mineralo-corticoids (aldosterone), and small amounts of estrogen and progesterone. Urinary output of 17-hydroxycorticoids reflects overall adrenal cortical activity. Under severe stress this output increases greatly.Adrenal replacement therapy is facilitated by the advent of more powerful and more soluble adrenal hormone derivatives. Hydrocortisone hemisuccinate sodium is the agent of choice in surgical emergencies and for management of bilateral adrenalectomy. Fatal adrenal crisis may develop during operation in patients receiving hydrocortisone for long periods of time. Hydrocortisone may be of help in unresponsive shock not due to loss of blood. The usual side effects of the corticoids can be controlled easily.  相似文献

Kamm is concerned with explaining how "common sense" morality might be used in deciding about the distribution of scarce medical resources. Drawing an analogy between redirection of possible harms or threats and the allocation of health resources, she first explores how an ordinary moral agent, not a physician, might act. Using what Kamm calls the principle of irrelevant utilities (PIU), a moral agent might decide between contestants for a particular good based on "sobjectivism" (Sob), the author's term for a combination of the objective and subjective points of view. Kamm explores decision making using three versions of Sob that weigh interests and rights, equivalences, and aggregation of costs (losses). She concludes that, while ordinary moral agents functioning as social agents may act according to objective aggregated costs, physicians should be concerned with equivalents and individuals when allocating resources.  相似文献

Cloud services are on-demand services provided to end-users over the Internet and hosted by cloud service providers. A cloud service consists of a set of interacting applications/processes running on one or more interconnected VMs. Organizations are increasingly using cloud services as a cost-effective means for outsourcing their IT departments. However, cloud service availability is not guaranteed by cloud service providers, especially in the event of anomalous circumstances that spontaneously disrupt availability including natural disasters, power failure, and cybersecurity attacks. In this paper, we propose a framework for developing intelligent systems that can monitor and migrate cloud services to maximize their availability in case of cloud disruption. The framework connects an autonomic computing agent to the cloud to automatically migrate cloud services based on anticipated cloud disruption. The autonomic agent employs a modular design to facilitate the incorporation of different techniques for deciding when to migrate cloud services, what cloud services to migrate, and where to migrate the selected cloud services. We incorporated a virtual machine selection algorithm for deciding what cloud services to migrate that maximizes the availability of high priority services during migration under time and network bandwidth constraints. We implemented the framework and conducted experiments to evaluate the performance of the underlying techniques. Based on the experiments, the use of this framework results in less down-time due to migration, thereby leading to reduced cloud service disruption.  相似文献

This paper reviews current understanding of the epidemiology, transmission dynamics and control of the aetiological agent of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). We present analyses of data on key parameters and distributions and discuss the processes of data capture, analysis and public health policy formulation during the SARS epidemic are discussed. The low transmissibility of the virus, combined with the onset of peak infectiousness following the onset of clinical symptoms of disease, transpired to make simple public health measures, such as isolating patients and quarantining their contacts, very effective in the control of the SARS epidemic. We conclude that we were lucky this time round, but may not be so with the next epidemic outbreak of a novel aetiological agent. We present analyses that help to further understanding of what intervention measures are likely to work best with infectious agents of defined biological and epidemiological properties. These lessons learnt from the SARS experience are presented in an epidemiological and public health context.  相似文献

The units that are subject to selection pressure in evolutionary biology are ‘strategies’, which are conditional actions (‘Do P if X occurs, otherwise do Q’). In contrast, the units in economics select strategies from available menus so as to further their projects and purposes. As economic agents do not live in isolation, each agent''s optimum choice, in general, depends on the choices made by others. Because their projects and purposes involve the future, not just the present, each agent reasons about the likely present and future consequences of their respective choices. That is why beliefs, about what others may do and what the consequences of those choices could be, are at the basis of strategy selection. A catalogue of social environments is constructed in which agents not only promise each other''s cooperation, but also rationally believe that the promises will be kept. Unfortunately, non-cooperation arising from mistrust can be the outcome in those same environments: societies harbour multiple ‘equilibria’ and can skid from cooperation to non-cooperation. Moreover, a pre-occupation among analysts with the Prisoners'' Dilemma game has obscured the fact that cooperative arrangements can harbour not only inequality, but also exploitation. The analysis is used to discuss why international cooperation over the use of global public goods has proved to be so elusive.  相似文献

Migrating cells are polarized with a protrusive lamella at the cell front followed by the main cell body and a retractable tail at the rear of the cell. The lamella terminates in ruffling lamellipodia that face the direction of migration. Although the role of actin in the formation of lamellipodia is well established, it remains unclear to what degree microtubules contribute to this process. Herein, we have studied the contribution of microtubules to cell motility by time-lapse video microscopy on green flourescence protein-actin- and tubulin-green fluorescence protein-transfected melanoma cells. Treatment of cells with either the microtubule-disrupting agent nocodazole or with the stabilizing agent taxol showed decreased ruffling and lamellipodium formation. However, this was not due to an intrinsic inability to form ruffles and lamellipodia because both were restored by stimulation of cells with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate in a Rac-dependent manner, and by stem cell factor in melanoblasts expressing the receptor tyrosine kinase c-kit. Although ruffling and lamellipodia were formed without microtubules, the microtubular network was needed for advancement of the cell body and the subsequent retraction of the tail. In conclusion, we demonstrate that the formation of lamellipodia can occur via actin polymerization independently of microtubules, but that microtubules are required for cell migration, tail retraction, and modulation of cell adhesion.  相似文献

Recent findings in neuroscience suggest an overlap between brain regions involved in the execution of movement and perception of another's movement. This so-called "action-perception coupling" is supposed to serve our ability to automatically infer the goals and intentions of others by internal simulation of their actions. A consequence of this coupling is motor interference (MI), the effect of movement observation on the trajectory of one's own movement. Previous studies emphasized that various features of the observed agent determine the degree of MI, but could not clarify how human-like an agent has to be for its movements to elicit MI and, more importantly, what 'human-like' means in the context of MI. Thus, we investigated in several experiments how different aspects of appearance and motility of the observed agent influence motor interference (MI). Participants performed arm movements in horizontal and vertical directions while observing videos of a human, a humanoid robot, or an industrial robot arm with either artificial (industrial) or human-like joint configurations. Our results show that, given a human-like joint configuration, MI was elicited by observing arm movements of both humanoid and industrial robots. However, if the joint configuration of the robot did not resemble that of the human arm, MI could longer be demonstrated. Our findings present evidence for the importance of human-like joint configuration rather than other human-like features for perception-action coupling when observing inanimate agents.  相似文献

The report presented in the 7th ONU's Conference (USA, 2001) about climatic changes that took place at the end of 2001 informs that, in less than 50 years, more than 45% of the world population will be suffering from lack of water. This fact occurs by the absence of management on water resources, mainly, in agriculture. As the excess as the lack of humidity in soil can change the harvest quality, causing physiologic anomalies in food and promoting soil diseases incidence caused by bacteria and fungus. In order to establish a larger control in the food quality, a study has been performed, through the neutron radiographic technique, that proposes the optimization of agricultural harvests in relation to the minimum quantity of water necessary for the plant to develop and, also, of the soil compactness. Thus, neutron radiographic images of the system root-soil can be produced so that each root will be evaluated for its ability to penetrate in the soil layers, having the advantage of not interfering in this system what it is not possible through the usual techniques yet. The initial tests using bean roots showed that the soil thickness, which involved the roots, resulted in low contrast images, what impeded their visualization with enough clearness so that their grow could not be observed. For this reason, it was opted to the gadolinium as a contrast agent so that we have been studying its transport through the roots.  相似文献
