Almost half of the endemic species of Honduran amphibians have declining populations; some of which seem to be extinct since
they have not been seen in several years in places where they were once common. Disappearances in pristine and protected habitats
have occurred in several highland localities throughout the country. The highland amphibian fauna of Pico Bonito National
Park declined sometime between 1989 and 1995. An amphibian chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been linked to similar declines in other neotropical regions. We checked 19 specimens for this disease, which were collected
in the park in 2003. The only Rana maculata examined was found to be infected, as were three of the six Eleutherodactylus aurilegulus surveyed for the disease. Two of the infected E. aurilegulus were collected at 120 m elevation and showed strong infections. One of these was lethargic and did not react when it was
collected in the field, although it was still alive. A complete necropsy could help determine if the B. dendrobatidis infection was responsible for these symptoms, and further research might show how susceptible E. aurilegulus is to this pathogen at low altitudes. More research should be focused on the distribution of this pathogen in Honduras, and
on how this disease has affected the local amphibian fauna. 相似文献

This report documents the response of wild mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata) to coseismic activity (seismic activity at the time of an earthquake). During field work on the north coast of Honduras, data were collected on a habituated troop of mantled howlers as they responded to coseismic activity. The seismic event occurred on 13 February 2001 at 0822 hours local time with a magnitude of Richter scale 6.6, focus depth of approximately 15 km at a distance of 341 km from the epicentre to the field site, Cuero y Salado. At the field site, based upon Jeffreys and Bullen (1988), body waves, noted as P and S waves, arrived at 60 and 87 s, respectively, with surface waves arriving approximately 103 s post-origin time of the seismic event. While there are three reports on non-human primate response to coseismic activity in the literature, they report on captive non-human primates. This is the first documented response on a non-captive troop. In addition, this report compares the intensity measure encountered by a wild troop of howlers and one captive group of orangutans as set out by the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. The Modified Mercalli measure of intensity is one of two standard measures of seismic activity and rates what a person sees and feels at their location (Wood and Neumann 1931; Richter 1958). Thus, arboreal nonhuman primates are found to respond to coseismic activity ranging from Level IV to Level VI as based upon the modified Mercalli intensity scale. 相似文献

Morphological and anatomical factors such as aerenchyma formation in roots and the development of adventitious roots are considered
to be amongst the most important developmental characteristics affecting flooding tolerance. In this study we investigated
the lengths of adventitious roots and their capacity to form aerenchyma in three- and four-week-old seedlings of two maize
(Zea mays ssp. mays, Linn.) inbred accessions, B64 and Na4, and one teosinte, Z. nicaraguensis Iltis & Benz (Poaceae), with and without a flooding treatment. Three weeks after sowing and following a seven day flooding
treatment, both maize and teosinte seedlings formed aerenchyma in the cortex of the adventitious roots of the first three
nodes. The degree of aerenchyma formation in the three genotypes increased with a second week of flooding treatment. In drained
soil, the two maize accessions failed to form aerenchyma. In Z. nicaraguensis, aerenchyma developed in roots located at the first two nodes three weeks after sowing. In the fourth week, aerenchyma developed
in roots of the third node, with a subsequent increase in aerenchyma in the second node roots. In a second experiment, we
investigated the capacity of aerenchyma to develop in drained soil. An additional three teosinte species and 15 maize inbred
lines, among them a set of flooding-tolerant maize lines, were evaluated. Evaluations indicate that accessions of Z. luxurians (Durieu & Asch. Bird) and two maize inbreds, B55 and Mo20W, form aerenchyma when not flooded. These materials may be useful

Colobus monkeys on the African island of Zanzibar eat charcoal from burned trees and lying near kilns, where it is produced for cooking. This behavior may be a learned response for counteracting toxicity due to phenolic and similar compounds that occur in significant concentrations in the Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves and mango (Mangifera indica) leaves which constitute a major part of their diet. Accordingly, we studied the adsorption of organic materials from hot water extracts of Indian almond and mango leaves by five charcoals collected in Zanzibar. For comparison, we also evaluated three commercial powdered activated charcoals. Three African charcoals collected at kilns adsorbed more organic material than two kinds collected from burned tree stumps. The commercial activated charcoals adsorbed the organic material best, as expected, yet the African kiln charcoals adsorbed surprisingly well. Thus, the hypothesized function of charcoal eating is supported. 相似文献

Sixty nine samples of maize were collected from pre-harvest standing crops and on-farm storage facilities from 52 smallholder farms located within 4 regions of Honduras during October 1992 and November 1993. Samples were visually assessed for insect damage and fungal spoilage, and the mycoflora quantified on artificial media. The major components of the ear rot complex were:Fusarium moniliforme, F. moniliforme var.subglutinans, Penicillium species,Stenocarpella maydis, S. macrospora andAcremonium spp. Representative samples were also assayed for mycotoxin content. Fumonisin B1 was detected in all 24 samples tested at levels of between 68–6,555 (µg/kg), and aflatoxin was detected in 2 samples heavily contaminated withAspergillus flavus. Moniliformin and tenuazonic acid were not detected in the samples tested. The implications of these findings for human and livestock health risk are discussed, together with possible strategies for controlling these pathogens. 相似文献

An understanding of the physiological factors important to growth and agar production of the Gelidiales would be useful for successful mariculture of these commercially valuable plants. Several environmental factors, including light, nitrogen, carbon, temperature and water motion, have been shown to have potential significance for growth rates, reproduction and carbon partitioning in defining optimal conditions for cultivation. Limiting and optimal growth conditions, where known, are presented, and evaluation of data reported in the literature is addressed. 相似文献

Currently, Gelidium and Pterocladia (Gelidiales) are collected or harvested only from the sea. Despite several attempts to develop a cultivation technology for Gelidium, no successful methodology has yet been developed. Initial steps towards developmental efforts in Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Israel have been published. More developments have probably been performed but have not been published. Two different technological concepts have been tested for Gelidium cultivation: (1) the attachment of Gelidium fragments to concrete cylinders floating in the sea, and (2) free-floating pond cultivation technology. These vegetative cultivation technologies might be partially optimized by controlling physical, chemical and biological growth factors. The pond cultivation technology is the much more controllable option. The effects of all factors are discussed in detail in this review. It seems that the main difficulty with cultivation of Gelidium is its low growth rate. The claimed yields of the two technologies are far from being economically attractive at this stage of their development. It seems that in order to introduce Gelidium into commercial cultivation, major efforts in genetic improvement through selection or genetic engineering will be required. Only high yield strains will have the potential to compete economically with the present harvesting tradition. However, accumulated experience with genetic improvement of other useful seaweed species suggests that this is possible. 相似文献

The biology of the earwig,Doru taeniatum (Dohrn), a reported predator ofSpodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), was studied in the laboratory.D. taeniatum under laboratory conditions was easily reared, mated readily and females tended eggs and first instar nymphs.D. taeniatum developed through 4 nymphal instars and reached imago in approximately 30 days. It is an omnivore in the laboratory and capable of developing and reproduction on plant pollen alone, and on Lepidoptera eggs (Sitotroga carealella) (Olivier) alone. Immatures developed most rapidly and females were most fecund when fed either a combination ofS. cereallea eggs and pollen, orS. cerealella eggs alone. Summary New cytological evidence supporting x = 5 as the basic chromosome number of the genus Zea has been obtained as a consequence of our analysis of the meiotic configurations of Zea mays ssp. mays, Z. diploperennis, Z. perennis and of four F1 artificial interspecific hybrids. Z. mays ssp. mays (2n = 20) presents regular meiosis with 10 bivalents (II) and is considered here as a typical allotetraploid (A2A2B2B2). In Z. diploperennis (2n = 20) 10II are formed in the majority of the cells, but the formation of 1III + 8II + 1I or 1III + 711 + 3I in 4% of the cells would indicate its segmental allotetraploid nature (A1A1B1B1). Z. perennis (2n = 40) had 5IV + 10II in 55% of the cells and would be considered as an auto-allooctoploid (A1A1A'1A'1C1C1C2C2). Z. diploperennis x Z. mays ssp. mays (2n = 20) presents 10II in ca. 70% of the cells and no multivalents are formed. In the two 2n = 30 hybrids (Z. mays ssp. mays x Z. perennis and Z. diploperennis x Z. perennis) the most frequent meiotic configuration was 5III + 5II + 5I and in 2n = 40 hybrid (Z. diploperennis x Z. perennis) was 5IV + 10II. Moreover, secondary association was observed in the three abovementioned tetraploid taxa (2n = 20) where one to five groups of two bivalents each at diakinesis-metaphase I was formed showing the affinities between homoeologous genomes. The results, as a whole, can be interpreed by assuming a basic x = 5 in this polyploid complex. The main previous contributions that support this working hypothesis are reviewed and its phylogenetic implications studied are discussed. 相似文献

The role of proton excretion in the growth of apical segments of maize roots has been examined. Growth is stimulated by acidic buffers and inhibited by neutral buffers. Organic buffers such as 2[N-morpholino] ethane sulphonic acid (MES) — 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3 diol (Tris) are more effective than phosphate buffers in inhibiting growth. Fusicoccin(FC)-induced growth is also inhibited by neutral buffers. The antiauxins 4-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid (PCIB) and 2-(naphthylmethylthio) propionic acid (NMSP) promote growth and H+-excretion over short time periods; this growth is also inhibited by neutral buffers. Summary Several hundred halophytes from salt marshes and salt deserts of the world have been evaluated in our laboratory at various degrees of intensity, and a few have been selected for development as crops. The development of the cultivars and the basic biology of the plants is being studied in Delaware in the United States. Agronomic testing, feeding trials, and development of the best agronomic practices are taking place in the saline desert at the American University in Cairo research station in Sadat City. Our present efforts focus primarily on three forages, one grain, and one vegetable.Sporobolus virginicus cultivars for both hay and pasture are being tested. ADistichlis spicata cultivar for hay has been identified, andSpartina patens is being evaluated as a hay as well. Although we do not yet have the data for a full year's growth in Egypt, forage yields of these various cultivars, when harvested as hay crops, range to 6.9 or more tons per acre, depending on the salinity and other environmental conditions, and the crude protein content as indicated by the nitrogen content ranges from 6 to 10%. Cultivars having the most useful agronomic qualities have been identified and are being increased in quantity. The grain cropKosteletzkya virginica is a perennial, producing a seed which resembles millet; its whole seeds contain approximately 25% protein and 15% oil. The yields of one of our better cultivars are about 1460 kg/ha (1300 lb/acre) when grown under 25 salinity. The vegetableAtriplex triangularis (similar to spinach) has been under mass selection for four years; a cultivar has been identified and seed is now being increased for this species. 相似文献

Stimulation of G-protein activity by the amphipathic tetradecapeptide mastoparan is well documented in animal systems and occurs via mimickry of the third cytoplasmic domain of the cognate seven-transmembrane-span (7TMS) receptor. Binding of guanosine 5-O-thiotriphosphate to microsomal and plasma-membrane fractions from Pisum sativum L. and Zea mays L. was stimulated by the tetradecapeptide mastoparan analogue mas 7 over a narrow concentration range, with maximal effect exerted at 10 M peptide, while the nonamphipathic analogue, mas CP, which differed from mas 7 by only one amino acid, was ineffective at promoting binding. This stimulation could be completely abolished by inclusion of low concentrations of the non-ionic detergents nonanoyl-N-methylglucamide and Lubrol PX. Taken together, these data provide good evidence for the existence of G-protein-linked 7TMS receptors in higher plant systems.Abbreviations GTPS

A mechanism for the upward translocation of phosphorus by flake-forming Aphanizomenon is hypothesized. Aphanizomenon germinates on oxic sediments and rises into the water column, then the flakes diurnally migrate. Observations from Spring Lake, Minnesota, U.S.A., indicate that Aphanizomenon translocates phosphorus to the summertime epilimnion. However, the observations cannot discriminate between which of two mechanisms related to Aphanizomenon flakes, upon germination or with subsequent diurnal migrations, is more important. 相似文献

Mast-seeding behaviour was monitored in 18 populations of eight species of the African cycad genus Encephalartos between 1988 and 1991. The coefficient of variation (V) in annual cone production for each population ranged between 88 and 200, indicating large fluctuations in reproductive effort between years. Data were collected to determine whether mast-seeding reduced levels of predispersal seed predation by satiating seed predators in mast years and whether it resulted in a reproductive advantage over plants which reproduced more frequently. Masting intensity was greatest in those populations in which individual plants suffered the highest levels of predispersal seed predation in years when only a few plants produced seeds. The principal seed predators were two congeneric weevil species, Antliarhinus zamiae and A. signatus, which develop exclusively on cycad seeds. The lowest intensity of mast-seeding was recorded for cycad populations with low levels of seed predation and in which A. zamiae and A. signatus occurred only in low numbers or were entirely absent. Larger seed crops appeared to result in lower levels of seed predation by A. zamiae and A. signatus in four populations of E. altensteinii, and differences in seed crop size accounted for 48–66% of variation in levels of seed predation in populations of five cycad species. In one population of E. altensteinii, lower levels of seed predation in plants reproducing periodically resulted in a reproductive advantage over plants reproducing more frequently. These results are consistent with the predator satiation hypothesis. However, in most cycad populations, numbers of seed predators did not appear to decrease significantly after a period of 2–8 years between reproductive episodes and, in two of three populations examined, periodic reproduction did not increase the number of seeds surviving to dispersal over a 4-year period. These results are interpreted to mean that periodic reproduction has not evolved in response to selection imposed by seed predators, but that selection may favour those plants which experience lower levels of seed predation by coning in synchrony with the majority of plants in the population. 相似文献

Unilateral irradiation of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings results in a fluence-rate gradient, and hence below saturation, a gradient of the far-red-absorbing form of phytochrome (Pfr). The Pfr-gradients established by blue, red and far-red light were spectrophotometrically measured in the mesocotyl. Based on these Pfr-gradients and the fluence-response curves of phytochrome photoconversion the fluence-rate gradients were calculated. The fluence-rate gradient in the blue (460 nm) was steeper than that in the red (665 nm), which in turn was steeper than that in the far-red light (725 nm). The fluence-rate ratios front to rear were 1:0.06 (460 nm), 1:0.2 (665 nm), and 1:0.33 (725 nm). The assumption that phytochrome-mediated phototropism of maize mesocotyls is caused by local phytochrome-mediated growth inhibition was tested in the following manner. Firstly, the Pfr response curve for growth inhibition was calculated; these calculations were based on measurements of Pfr-gradients and data from red-light-induced phototropism. Secondly, the Pfr response curve for growth inhibition was used as a basis for calculating fluence-response curves for blue-and far-red-light-induced phototropism. Finally, these calculated results were compared with experimental data. It was concluded that the threshold for phytochrome-mediated phototropism of maize mesocotyls reflects the apparent photoconversion cross section of phytochrome whereas the maximal inducable curvature depends on the steepness of the light (Pfr) gradient across the mesocotyl.Abbreviations Pfr

Sucrose (2,5–1000 mmol l–1), labeled with [14C]sucrose, was taken up by the xylem when supplied to one end of a 30-cm-long leaf strip of Zea mays L. cv. Prior. The sugar was loaded into the phloem and transported to the opposite end, which was immersed in diluted Hoagland's nutrient solution. When the Hoagland's solution at the opposite end was replaced by unlabeled sucrose solution of the same molarity as the labeled one, the two solutions met near the middle of the leaf strip, as indicated by radioautographs. In the dark, translocation of 14C-labeled assimilates was always directed away from the site of sucrose application, its distance depending on sugar concentration and translocation time. When sucrose was applied to both ends of the leaf strip, translocation of 14C-labeled assimilates was directed toward the lower sugar concentration. In the light, transport of 14-C-labeled assimilates can be directed (1) toward the morphological base of the leaf strip only (light effect), (2) toward the base and away from the site of sucrose application (light and sucrose effect), or (3) away from the site of sucrose application independent of the (basipetal or acropetal) direction (sucrose effect). The strength of a sink, represented by the darkened half of a leaf strip, can be reduced by applying sucrose (at least 25 mmol l–1) to the darkened end of the leaf strip. However, equimolar sucrose solutions applied to both ends do not affect the strength of the dark sink. Only above 75 mmol l–1 sucrose was the sink effect of the darnened part of the leaf strip reduced. Presumably, increasing the sucrose concentration replenishes the leaf tissue more rapidly, and photosynthates from the illuminated part of the leaf strip are imported to a lesser extent by the dark sink.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 相似文献

Brief irradiation of 3-d-old maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings with red light (R; 180 J m-2) inhibits elongation of the mesocotyl (70–80% inhibition in 8 h) and reduces its indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content. The reduction in IAA content, apparent within a few hours, is the result of a reduction in the supply of IAA from the coleoptile unit (which includes the shoot apex and primary leaves). The fluence-response relationship for the inhibition of mesocotyl growth by R and far-red light closely resemble those for the reduction of the IAA supply from the coleoptile. The relationship between the concentration of IAA (1–10 M) supplied to the cut surface of the mesocotyl of seedlings with their coleoptile removed and the growth increment of the mesocotyl, measured after 4 h, is linear. The hypothesis that R inhibits mesocotyl growth mainly by reducing the IAA supply from the coleoptile is supported. However, mesocotyl growth in seedlings from which the coleoptiles have been removed is also inhibited by R (about 25% inhibition in 8 h). This inhibition is not related to changes in the IAA level, and not relieved by applied IAA. In intact seedlings, this effect may also participate in the inhibition of mesocotyl growth by R. Inhibition of cell division by R, whose mechanism is not known, will also result in reduced mesocotyl elongation especially in the long term (e.g. 24 h).Abbreviations FR

Every year birdwatchers throughout Europe record the arrival of a considerable number of vagrants from the eastern Palaearctic. We analysed the occurrence of such vagrants in Central Europe of the genera Phylloscopus, Turdus and Zoothera in Central Europe. Our results revealed that the occurrence of a species depended on total population size, but not on body size. Furthermore, the occurrence of species in Central Europe increased with distance between the breeding range and wintering range, but the distance between the breeding range and Europe had no effect. These results indicate that the migratory restlessness of species determines whether an East Asian species arrives in Europe. Overall, our data support the hypothesis that the migratory program determines vagrancy. 相似文献

Chaoborus, the phantom midge (Insecta, Diptera, Chaoboridae), has a widespread distribution, commonly occurring in lakes and ponds all over the world. In the great lakes region of East Africa Chaoborus is present in Lakes Victoria, Albert, Edward, Malawi and George, but absent from Lakes Tanganyika, Kivu and Turkana. Tropical lakes typically have water temperatures in the range of 22–26 °C year round. Lakes Tanganyika and Kivu have only 20% of their bottom sediments oxygenated during full circulation, contrary to 95–100% in all of the other lakes, excluding Lake Malawi (45%) (Hecky & Kling, 1987). Planktivorous fish are present in all lakes (Lehman, 1995). We hypothesized that the absence of Chaoborus larvae from some lakes of East Africa may be the result of interaction among high temperatures, low oxygen levels, and fish predation.We developed a model to estimate energetic costs for Chaoborus larvae at temperatures greater than 14 °C. We hoped to shed light on the bioenergetics of Chaoborus populations, and the possibility that extant distributions of Chaoborus larvae are the result of energetic constraints.We found that relative respiratory and growth costs of Chaoborus larvae are highest in the early stages of development. We estimated that non-feeding instar I larvae living in 25 °C water will starve to death in less than one day. It is possible that Chaoborus populations are prevented from establishing in certain areas because high energetic costs condemn young larvae to death by either predation or starvation. 相似文献
