The righting maneuver of a freely falling cat was filmed at 1000 pictures per second, and the head position about the roll axis was digitized from each film frame using a graphics input tablet. The head angular velocity and acceleration were computed from the roll axis position trajectory. Head acceleration trajectories approximated two periods of a damped sinusoid at a frequency of 26 Hz. Head acceleration peak amplitudes exceeded 120,000 deg/s2. These trajectories were used as stimuli for the horizontal semicircular canals in a computer simulation of first-order afferent responses during the fall. Linear system afferent response dynamics, characterized in a previous study of the cat horizontal canal using pseudorandom rotations, provided the basis for linear predictions of falling cat afferent responses. Results showed predicted single afferent firing rates that exceeded physiological values; and variations in afferent sensitivities and phase were predicted among different neurons. Fast head movement information could be carried by ensemble populations of vestibular neurons, and a phase-locking encoding hypothesis is proposed which accomplishes this. Implications for central program versus peripheral vestibular feedback strategies for motor control during falling are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The internal radius (r) and radius of curvature (R) of the single semicircular canals of Myxine glutinosa have unusual dimensions. In mammals and fish the increase in dimension of r and R with respect to body weight is small; in fish r is larger than in mammals of equivalent weight in order to increase the sensitivity of the canals to angular rotation and R increases correspondingly (Jones & Spells, 1963). In Myxine r is larger than in fish or mammals yet R is smaller. It is argued that the large internal radius is the result of the need to increase the sensitivity of a single canal which has to signal rotation in three planes while the small radius of curvature follows from the absence of a cupula. In order to verify that the cristae of the canals do respond to rotational velocity, recordings were obtained from the nerves serving the canals during rotation in the horizontal plane. The frequency response of several afferents recorded simultaneously at sinusoidal rotations between 0.25 and 2.0 Hz was in the form of a sine wave 90 in advance of head position, as would be expected of a velocity transducer. The gain of single afferents was an order of magnitude less than those reported for other vertebrates.  相似文献

The effects of afferent vestibular impulses on single pontine reticular formation units and on a small filament of the IIIrd cranial nerve were recorded with tungsten microelectrodes in 40 curarized guinea pigs. Single-shock and repetitive electrical stimulations were applied by means of stimulating electrodes inserted bilaterally into the perilymphatic space of single ampullae of the anterior and lateral semicircular canals. The reticular unitary response consisted mainly in excitation of the resting discharge rate: most units showed vestibular convergence being affected by separate stimulation of the single four ampullae. the reticular evoked field and unitary potentials accounted for latency values ranging from 0.3 to 2.5 msec. As for the early latencies they can be interpreted as responses mediated by direct vestibulo-reticular fibres. A delimited vestibular projection field in the parameidan pontine reticular formation was not identified.  相似文献

The effects of competitive (2-amino-phosphonovaleric acid) and noncompetitive (Mg2+, ketamine, kynurenic acid) antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors on synaptic transmission were studied in afferent synapses of the frog semicircular canals. The review covers new trends in the simulation of the processes associated with the functioning of the semicircular canal (SC) system, i.e., the component of the vestibular apparatus responsible for the detection of angular movement of the head. The basic factor determining these trends is an increasing role of computers both in the research of mathematical models and in the direct simulation (imitation) of the SC structure, processes proceeding in SCs and conditions of the experiment. As shown by the analysis of the literature, at present, it is possible to distinguish the following trends in the development of SC simulation: (1) reconstruction models; (2) micro-simulation; (3) integrated models; (4) simulation models; (5) alternative models of SC functioning. L-type and R-type Ca(2+) currents were detected in frog semicircular canal hair cells. The former was noninactivating and nifedipine-sensitive (5 microM); the latter, partially inactivated, was resistant to omega-conotoxin GVIA (5 microM), omega-conotoxin MVIIC (5 microM), and omega-agatoxin IVA (0.4 microM), but was sensitive to mibefradil (10 microM). Both currents were sensitive to Ni(2+) and Cd(2+) (>10 microM). In some cells the L-type current amplitude increased almost twofold upon repetitive stimulation, whereas the R-type current remained unaffected. Eventually, run-down occurred for both currents, but was prevented by the protease inhibitor calpastatin. The R-type current peak component ran down first, without changing its plateau, suggesting that two channel types generate the R-type current. This peak component appeared at -40 mV, reached a maximal value at -30 mV, and became undetectable for voltages > or =0 mV, suggestive of a novel transient current: its inactivation was indeed reversibly removed when Ba(2+) was the charge carrier. The L-type current and the R-type current plateau were appreciable at -60 mV and peaked at -20 mV: the former current did not reverse for voltages up to +60 mV, the latter reversed between +30 and +60 mV due to an outward Cs(+) current flowing through the same Ca(2+) channel. The physiological role of these currents on hair cell function is discussed.  相似文献
