Synopsis The molluscicide, Bayluscide, has been extensively used in Rhodesia, not only for blanket treatment of whole stream catchments, but also for long-term surveillance programmes. It was feared that the constant spraying of snail foci in streams would have a serious effect on the rest of the aquatic fauna. The faunas of two streams under this type of treatment were studied over a period of one year and the results compared with those from two matched, untreated streams. One pair of streams had dissolved bicarbonates in the medium range of concentration and the other in the high range. Although the treatment kept down the snail hosts of schistosomiasis and fasciolasis the rest of the invertebrate fauna appeared to be unaffected and fish were not eliminated.  相似文献

Feeding selectivity by five epilithic, case-building trichopteran species from a first-order stream was examined using laboratory experiments. Larvae had the choice of three food types: periphyton and detritus from the stream, and nettle broth as an artificial food source. Food type influenced the microdistribution of these species. Larvae were able to distinguish between different food types and showed species-specific responses to the various types of food. Drusus annulatus, Micrasema longulum and Apatania fimbriata favoured periphyton, while Agapetus fuscipes and Silo pallipes showed no preference for periphyton over detritus. Four of the five species examined (Apatania fimbriata was the exception) tended to avoid nettle broth. The complexity of foraging behaviour was illustrated by M. longulum. Given a choice between detritus, periphyton and periphyton with the addition of moss, they clearly preferred the latter food type, scraping mostly on the epiphytic algae. Proportions of a given species selecting periphyton were correlated with percentage areas of algae in the gut contents of that species in the field. D. annulatus, M. longulum and A. fimbriata showed the greatest preference for periphyton, and consumed the highest proportions of algae in the field. A. fuscipes and S. pallipes often selected detritus, and these species had the lowest proportions of algae, and the highest proportions of detritus, in their guts.  相似文献

  • 1 The seasonal dynamics of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage, and the subset of this assemblage colonising naturally formed detritus accumulations, was investigated in two streams in south‐west Ireland, one draining a conifer plantation (Streamhill West) and the other with deciduous riparian vegetation (Glenfinish). The streams differed in the quantity, quality and diversity of allochthonous detritus and in hydrochemistry, the conifer stream being more acid at high discharge. We expected the macroinvertebrate assemblage colonising detritus to differ in the two streams, due to differences in the diversity and quantity of detrital inputs.
  • 2 Benthic density and taxon richness did not differ between the two streams, but the density of shredders was greater in the conifer stream, where there was a greater mass of benthic detritus. There was a significant positive correlation between shredder density and detritus biomass in both streams over the study period.
  • 3 Detritus packs in the deciduous stream were colonised by a greater number of macroinvertebrates and taxa than in the conifer stream, but packs in both streams had a similar abundance of shredders. The relative abundance of taxa colonising detritus packs was almost always significantly different to that found in the source pool of the benthos.
  • 4 Correspondence analysis illustrated that there were distinct faunal differences between the two streams overall and seasonally within each stream. Differences between the streams were related to species tolerances to acid episodes in the conifer stream. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated a distinct seasonal pattern in the detrital composition of the packs and a corresponding seasonal pattern in the structure of the detritus pack macroinvertebrate assemblage.
  • 5 Within‐stream seasonal variation both in benthic and detritus pack assemblages and in detrital inputs was of similar magnitude to the between‐stream variation. The conifer stream received less and poorer quality detritus than the deciduous stream, yet it retained more detritus and had more shredders in the benthos. This apparent contradiction may be explained by the influence of hydrochemistry (during spate events) on the shredder assemblage, by differences in riparian vegetation between the two streams, and possibly by the ability of some taxa to exhibit more generalist feeding habits and thus supplement their diets in the absence of high quality detritus.

Summary The food composition in the guts ofDaphnia hyalina was compared with the phytoplankton composition in the lake water on several dates during the year. The guts contained almost exclusively algae; detritus was not an important food item. ExceptOscillatoria agardhii, all large algal forms were generally avoided. On a whole,Scenedesmus was the most preferred taxon, but as numbers or biomass ingestedO. agardhii was more important. The filamentous blue-green algae>60 m (range: 60–1500 m) were strongly avoided byDaphnia. The observed size selective feeding is probably the result of limitations in their filtering apparatus rather than active selection.  相似文献

Background

Although plants produce many secondary metabolites, currently none of these are commercial antibiotics. Insects feeding on specific plants can harbour bacterial strains resistant to known antibiotics suggesting that compounds in the plant have stimulated resistance development. We sought to determine whether the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in insect guts was a widespread phenomenon, and whether this could be used as a part of a strategy to identify antibacterial compounds from plants.

Results

Six insect/plant pairs were selected and the insect gut bacteria were identified and assessed for antibiotic susceptibilities compared with type strains from culture collections. We found that the gut strains could be more or less susceptible to antibiotics than the type strains, or show no differences. Evidence of antibacterial activity was found in the plant extracts from five of the six plants, and, in one case Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar Periwinkle), compounds with antibacterial activity were identified.

Conclusion

Bacterial strains isolated from insect guts show a range of susceptibilities to antibiotics suggesting a complex interplay between species in the insect gut microbiome. Extracts from selected plants can show antibacterial activity but it is not easy to isolate and identify the active components. We found that vindoline, present in Madagascar Periwinkle extracts, possessed moderate antibacterial activity. We suggest that plant-derived antibiotics are a realistic possibility given the advances in genomic and metabolomic methodologies.

Nymphs of Rhithrogena iridina, Baetis alpinusand Baetis melanonyx were collected in theWoosatka and Terebowiec streams; Bieszczady NationalPark, southeastern Poland. The streams have differentenvironmental conditions. The life cycles of Rhithrogena iridina in the Woosatka and theTerebowiec streams were of the univoltine winter type.In the Woosatka (Station 1) this species had aunivoltine life cycle with one cohort. In theTerebowiec (Station 2), R. iridina had aunivoltine life cycle with two cohorts – winter andsummer. The development of Baetis alpinus tookvarious courses depending on environmental conditions.At the lower station (Woosatka), where watertemperature reached higher values and the stream bedis less shady, the species had a winter-summer cyclewith two generations a year. Habitat use of animals is influenced by a combination of factors including food abundance and interactions with other species. Animals typically must forage while simultaneously avoiding predation from multiple potential predators, but habitat use in tropical forest ecosystems that assesses effects of both predation risk and resources has rarely been conducted. We used camera traps and occupancy analyses to document small mammalian carnivore occurrence in relation to food abundance and interactions with large predators. We hypothesized that habitat use of six small mammalian carnivores (≤15 kg) would be influenced by (1) abundance of resources (fruit, rodents, and streams) and/or (2) large predators. Predictions regarding food and habitat resources were only supported for one species (crab-eating mongoose, Urva urva), which was positively associated with rodents and streams. Three small carnivores (masked palm civet Paguma larvata, common palm civet Paradoxurus hermaphroditus, yellow-throated marten Martes flavigula) were affected negatively by leopard and mesopredators as predicted. Counter to our predictions, two species (masked palm civet and yellow-throated marten) showed spatial avoidance of tiger suggesting that an apex predator might also pose predation risk to small carnivores. The focal small carnivores and large predators of this study appeared to have moderately to highly overlapping temporal activity indicating no temporal avoidance. In conclusion, food resources appeared to have minimal effects for six small carnivores in this ecosystem probably due to continuous resource availability. Predation risk appeared to affect some species in terms of spatial occupancy but not in temporal activity, indicating perhaps complex, but not entirely negative interactions between larger carnivores and this guild of small carnivores. The mechanisms which facilitate co-occurrence between small carnivores and large predators may, however, operate at finer spatiotemporal scales than we investigated here.  相似文献

We examined microbial colonization, exoenzyme activity, and processing of leaves of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), red maple (Acer rubrum), and white oak (Quercus alba) in three streams on the Allegheny Plateau of West Virginia, United States. Leaf packs were placed in streams that varied in their underlying bedrock geology, and therefore in their sensitivity to the high level of acidic precipitation that occurs in this region. The mean pH of the streams was 4.3 in the South Fork of Red Run (SFR), 6.2 in Wilson Hollow Run (WHR), and 7.7 in the North Fork of Hickman Slide Run (HSR). Through time, the patterns of microbial biomass and exoenzyme activity were generally similar among leaf species, but the magnitude of microbial biomass and exoenzyme activity differed among leaf species. Pectinase activity was greatest in HSR, the most alkaline stream, whereas the activity of exocellulase and xylanase was greatest in WHR and SFR, the intermediate and acidic streams. This variation in the activity of different exoenzymes was consistent with published pH optima for these exoenzymes. Variation in processing rates, both among leaf species and among streams, seems to be related to the level of microbial exoenzyme activity on the leaf detritus.  相似文献

Chronic ingestion of the highly active, specific cysteine proteinase inhibitor, E-64, has a profound effect on Colorado potato beetle (CPB) larval growth, development and survival, as well as on adult fecundity. However, the number of insects surviving to the adult stage did not decrease below 26% with increasing E-64 concentration above 1.5 g E-64 cm–2 leaf surface. The development time to the pupal stage was increased from 13 days, when larvae were reared on control leaves, to 21 days at a concentration of 1.5 g E-64 cm–2 . The most significant effect of dietary E-64 was on adult fecundity, with mated females reared on untreated leaves laying an average 62 ± 5.7 eggs daily in the first 10 days, and those maintained on 0.5 g E-64 cm–2, laying only 16 ± 2.4 eggs day–1. Females given 1 g E-64 cm–2 laid few if any eggs, but started producing egg masses as large as control insects about 5 days after being switched to control leaves. These effects on the insect life cycle were directly related to the degree of inhibition of cysteine proteinase activity in gut extracts. The general proteinase activity in control extracts was 6.5 ± 0.16 units min–1 mg gut–1, which decreased to 1.9 ± 0.16 in guts of insects reared on 1 g E-64 cm–2. The proportion of proteinase activity inhibitable by E-64 decreased from 66% in control guts to 10-15% in guts from larvae reared on 1 g E-64 cm–2. The aspartate proteinase inhibitor, pepstatin, decreased proteinase activity by 35% in control guts. There was no induction of pepstatin-inhibitable proteinases in response to inhibition by E-64, and no inhibition of gut enzyme activity by soybean trypsin inhibitor from larvae fed any of the E-64 concentrations. This study demonstrates that proteinase levels must be significantly reduced to have a pronounced effect on larval growth and survival, while fecundity of mated females is affected by lower concentrations of inhibitor. It also suggests that the CPB may be a difficult pest to control using a more specific, plant-derived cysteine proteinase inhibitor, such as oryzacystatin.  相似文献

Synopsis Campostoma spp., widespread and abundant herbivorous minnows of eastern North America, produce distinctive grazing scars when feeding on algae attached to natural substrates in streams. These scars are particularly prominent upon the low growth forms of blue-green algae that dominate the attached algal flora of many upland streams. In one stream pool in the Ozark uplands of Oklahoma, numbers and sizes of grazing scars coincided with numbers and sizes of individual Campostoma that occurred across a depth gradient, demonstrating that the information contained in the scars can provide quantification of microhabitat use and grazing intensity of these important herbivores. The results also support the hypothesis that in environments free of aquatic predators, larger fish use deeper parts of available stream habitats, particularly if threats from terrestrial or avian predators exist.  相似文献

The isotopic composition of sulfur in sulfate from precipitation, stream inflows and outflow of the Lake 239 watershed at the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, was monitored for four years, 1982–1985. Rainfall had 34S of 3–9and a three year mean value weighted by the mass of sulfate of 4.8 Sulfur in streams ranged from 5–15 and displayed a pronounced seasonal pattern in which 34S showed significant negative correlations with both streamflows and sulfate concentrations. Outflow values were much more constant and averaged 6.4 over the three year period. Sulfate reduction or sorption favoring retention of the lighter isotope in the watershed was the probable cause of the isotopic variation of the sulfur isotopes in the streams. 1. Leaf litter breakdown rates were assessed in 23 boreal streams of varying size (first–seventh order) in central and northern Sweden. 2. Shredders were most abundant in small streams, while shredder species richness showed a hump-shaped relationship with stream order, with most species in fourth order streams. 3. In a partial least-squares regression analysis, year, water temperature, shredder species richness and shredder abundance were those factors correlating most strongly with leaf breakdown rates. Shredder species richness was more strongly correlated with leaf litter breakdown rates than shredder abundance, and shredder biomass showed no such correlation. 4. These data suggest that shredder species richness is an important variable in terms of leaf litter dynamics in streams.  相似文献

Omnivorous fish, such as the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum(Rafinesque)), and crayfish often play important roles in the trophic dynamics of streams. The trophic role of these two omnivores has not been compared within a system even though they both consume algae, detritus and invertebrates and often co-occur in streams in the Midwestern United States. Natural abundance of 15N and 13C isotopes and a whole stream 15N-labeled ammonium chloride release were used to compare the trophic ecology of the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque)) and two species of crayfish (Orconectes neglectus (Faxon) and Orconectes nais (Faxon)) in a tallgrass prairie stream. The 15N and 13C values of Orconectes spp. were more similar to coarse benthic organic matter (CBOM) and filamentous green algae than to invertebrates, fine benthic organic matter (FBOM), and periphyton. Values for 15N and 13C in C. anomalum were more similar to grazer and collector invertebrates and filamentous green algae than to FBOM and periphyton. Results from a 15N tracer release also indicated a portion of algae and/or invertebrates were a component of nitrogen assimilated in Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum diets. Gut contents of C. anomalum were also analyzed. In contrast to stable isotope data, amorphous detritus was a significant component of C. anomalum guts, followed by diatoms and filamentous green algae. A significant percentage of invertebrate material was found in C. anomalum guts sampled in the spring. Experiments were conducted in artificial streams to determine if Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum could reduce epilithic algal biomass in small streams. Algal biomass on clay tile substrata was decreased relative to controls in artificial stream channels containing O. neglectus (3.4 fold, p=0.0002), C. anomalum (2.1 fold, p=0.0012), and both species combined (3.0 fold, p=0.0003). Results indicate that Orconectes spp. are functioning more as algal and detrital processors than as predators in Kings Creek. Isotope and gut content data show that C. anomalum includes invertebrates as well as algae and detritus in its diet. Both species have the potential to affect algal biomass and are important omnivores in the stream food web.  相似文献

Few long-term data sets exist for meiofauna. Such data sets are expensive to collect, sort and identify; continuous meiofauna data for a period of greater than two years are limited to one site in Belgium (7 yrs) and two sites (one mud, one sand) in South Carolina, USA (11 yrs). The Belgian study concentrates on benthic copepod abundances whereas data from South Carolina includes major taxa and benthic copepods as well as 4 years of concurrent macrofauna abundance and 3 years of nematode species abundances. In South Carolina, the variance associated with meiofaunal abundance had 6 or 12 month recurrent cycles. Similar analyses on 4 years of macrofauna from the same 2 sites indicated the same cyclicity: one year. Seasonality of the South Carolina major taxa and the 6 most abundant mud copepod species was pronounced at the mud site, but absent or less pronounced at the sand site. Similar results were also found for the nematode species over three years. Variability in meiofaunal abundance was greater year-to-year than within a year. Many such long-term data sets are analysed and abandoned. Herewith, I use our long-term results to hypothesize the causes of the high temporal variance in mud and the lower temporal variance in sand. Is it because the mud fauna is controlled by seasonal inputs of natant predators while at the hydrodynamically active sand site temporal variability is homogenized by constant physical activity? By appropriate statistical modelling long-term data sets can also be used to assess the appropriateness of the sampling schedule (spatial and temporal) and as a predictor of future trends.  相似文献

Background & Objectives

Cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggests that Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with changes in cerebral tissue volume, diffusion tensor imaging metrics, and perfusion values. Here, we performed a longitudinal multimodal MRI study—including structural, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and perfusion MRI—to investigate progressive brain changes over one year in a group of older PD patients at a moderate stage of disease.

Methods

Twenty-three non-demented PD (mean age (SD) = 69.5 (6.4) years, disease duration (SD) = 5.6 (4.3) years) and 23 matched control participants (mean age: 70.6 (6.8)) completed extensive neuropsychological and clinical assessment, and multimodal 3T MRI scanning at baseline and one year later. We used a voxel-based approach to assess change over time and group-by-time interactions for cerebral structural and perfusion metrics.

Results

Compared to controls, in PD participants there was localized grey matter atrophy over time in bilateral inferior and right middle temporal, and left orbito-frontal cortices. Using a voxel-based approach that focused on the centers of principal white matter tracts, the PD and control cohorts exhibited similar levels of change in DTI metrics. There was no significant change in perfusion, cognitive, or motor severity measures.

Conclusions

In a cohort of older, non-demented PD participants, macrostructural MRI detected atrophy in the PD group compared with the control group in temporal and orbito-frontal cortices. Changes in diffusion MRI along principal white matter tracts over one year were found, but this was not differentially affected by PD.  相似文献

Coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) inputs from riparian vegetation into streams and CPOM benthic stock vary naturally in space and time, but most studies in the tropical savannah (Cerrado) have been done over a small temporal scale (<1 year), which does not allow for the determination of inter-annual patterns. We found that CPOM collected over two years differed temporally and spatially, whereas there was no significant variation between years for the benthic stock, which indicates high stability in the energy balance of streams. The largest monthly inputs occurred between August and October, at the end of the dry season and the onset of the rainy season, which was partially explained by precipitation. Other factors such as photoperiod, which was not studied, could also have important roles in this pattern. Spatial differences in CPOM between streams were attributed to topography and channel morphology. The plant density was lowest in the stream with a more irregular topography and a deeper channel, which results in drier riparian soil. The benthic stock was highest in the stream with a flat channel, where the lower water speed facilitates the accumulation of CPOM in the stream bed. Inter-annual differences in CPOM were attributed more to the differences in the beginning of the dry and wet periods between years than to the average values of precipitation. Longer-term studies are needed to clarify this temporal pattern.  相似文献

Distribution and seasonal dynamics of freshwater Rhodophyta were investigated in the Preto River basin, located in northwestern São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Twenty-two sites were sampled, six monthly during one year, four bimonthly during two years, and 12 twice (hot-rainy and cool-dry seasons) during the study period (May 1989 through March 1991). Red algal representatives were found in 19 sites (86.4%). Four species occurred in the basin with varying frequencies:Batrachospermum delicatulum (54.5%),Compsopogon coeruleus (36.4%),B. bicudoi (13.6%) andB. virgatum (4.5%). In addition, Chantransia stage of the batrachospermalean species was found in 17 sites (77.3%).B. bicudoi, B. virgatum andC. coeruleus occurred only in large stream segments ( 3-order), generally in the main river, whereasB. delicatulum was more frequent in small streams ( 3-order). The stream variables most closely related to the species distribution in the basin were specific conductance, pH and oxygen.B. bicudoi andB. delicatulum showed a marked seasonality: gametophytes were observed from late fall to early spring, while the Chantransia stage generally occurred throughout the year.C. coeruleus was observed throughout the year in most sites, but the populations were generally more abundant from late fall to early spring. The combination of lower temperature and reduced turbidity resulting in increased illumination to the benthic algae during the dry winter months promotes the gametophytic growth of the batrachospermalean species, whereas current velocity was found to be the most influential stream variable forC. coeruleus. The persistance of the Chantransia stage throughout the year as well as its tolerance to wider environmental conditions are key factors in the efficiency of the batrachospermalean life history strategy in lotic ecosystems.  相似文献

The relationship between length of individual Stegastes nigricans and size of the territory that they defend, and both the spatial and temporal variation in territoriality were investigated monthly on a fringing coral reef of Réunion Island over the course of one year. Length of individual S. nigricans was correlated positively with size of the territory. Most small individuals were found separate from adults, in areas with low algal turf cover. This is probably due to strong intra-specific competition for access to algal food resources and shelter availability, and/or differences in habitat preference. Both abundance of individuals and surface defended showed seasonal fluctuations. Densities were slightly higher in austral summer than in winter, and the surface defended by individuals larger than 8cm increased in winter. A permanent redistribution of territories also occured between individuals over time.  相似文献

A tenet of auditory scene analysis is that we can fully process only one stream of auditory information at a time. We tested this assumption in a gleaning bat, the pallid bat (Antrozous pallidus) because this bat uses echolocation for general orientation, and relies heavily on prey-generated sounds to detect and locate its prey. It may therefore encounter situations in which the echolocation and passive listening streams temporally overlap. Pallid bats were trained to a dual task in which they had to negotiate a wire array, using echolocation, and land on one of 15 speakers emitting a brief noise burst in order to obtain a food reward. They were forced to process both streams within a narrow 300 to 500 ms time window by having the noise burst triggered by the bats initial echolocation pulses as it approached the wire array. Relative to single task controls, echolocation and passive sound localization performance was slightly, but significantly, degraded. The bats also increased echolocation interpulse intervals during the dual task, as though attempting to reduce temporal overlap between the signals. These results suggest that the bats, like humans, have difficulty in processing more than one stream of information at a time.  相似文献
