Seed size is a widely accepted measure of seed quality, because many earlier studies have shown that large seeds have high seedling survival, growth and establishment. We tested whether ovule loss increases size of the remaining seeds and whether such size increase affects seedling establishment. We removed all except one flower from inflorescences of Primula veris L. (Primulaceae), a perennial hemicryptophyte herb, at a late stage of flowering. Flower removal (FR) increased seed size by 33% compared to the control plants. We then divided the seeds within each treatment to small, middle-sized and large seeds and carried out a sowing experiment in the field. Within each experimental group, seedling establishment was positively associated with seed size. However, despite size differences, seeds from the FR and control groups had the same seedling establishment probability. Seeds from FR plants had a higher seedling emergence in May than those from control plants, but the number of seedlings alive per sowing plot in the late summer was the same in both experimental groups. Increase in seed mass after partial FR thus did not enhance seedling performance, although seed size variation due to other causes was positively correlated with seedling establishment. Further studies are needed to show whether plastic changes of seed size are usually adaptive or not.  相似文献

Seed size is normally distributed for many annual species, while mature plant size is frequently positively skewed. A study was conducted to determine the influence of seed size and the role of genetic differences in determining relative seedling size for Ludwigia leptocarpa. Seed size had a significant effect on percentage germination and time of seed germination but no effect on dry weight or leaf area of seedlings. Seed size and spacing had a significant effect on seedling dry weight for plants grown under competition, while relative day of emergence had no effect. Familial (genetic) differences were found in average seed weight between maternal plants, but not in average number of days to germination, average weight of seeds which germinated, or shoot dry weight. It is concluded that neither seed size alone nor genetic differences between plants are directly responsible for the development of size hierarchies in Ludwigia leptocarpa populations. Large seed size does convey an advantage in growth when plants from seeds of differing initial size interact.  相似文献

Abstract

The adverse effects of increasing concentration of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. malvacearum on cotton seed quality parameters, seedling dry weight and on defense-related enzyme, Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase (PAL) were studied. Different concentrations of pathogen (1×102 to 1×108 CFU/ml) were treated on both fuzzy and acid delinted seeds and subjected to the standard blotter method to study the effect of the pathogen on seed quality parameters. The seedling symptom test following the roll towel method, the modified germination test to study the blight incidence and the field emergence test were carried out to discover the field planting value and disease incidence under laboratory and field conditions. From these experiments, it was found that the decrease in the seed quality parameters like seed germination, seedling vigour, and the dry weight of seedlings when X. axonopodis pv. malvacearum concentration was increased. Whereas the bacterial blight incidence increased with an increase in pathogen concentration, in both greenhouse and field conditions. Phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity was found to increase along with the pathogen concentrations, but total phenol content decreased as pathogen concentration increased. The effect of X. axonopodis pv. malvacearum load on seed quality parameters, PAL enzyme activity of fuzzy and acid delinted cotton seeds are discussed in the present study.  相似文献

Intraspecific variation in seed size is common in wild plant populations and has important consequences for the reproductive success of individual plants. Multiple, often conflicting evolutionary forces mediated by biotic as well as abiotic agents may maintain such a variation. In this paper we assessed seed size variation in a population of the threatened, commercially important palm Euterpe edulis in southeast Brazil. We investigated (i) how this variation affects the probability of attack by vertebrate and invertebrate post-dispersal seed predators, and (ii) if seed size influences the outcome of seeds damaged by beetles in terms of seed germination and early survival of seedlings. Euterpe edulis seeds varied in diameter from 8.3 to 14.1 mm. Neither insects nor rodents selected the seeds they preyed upon based on seed size. Seed germination and total, shoot and root biomasses of one-year seedlings were significantly and positively affected by seed size. Root biomass and seedling survival were negatively affected by seed damage caused by a scolytid beetle (Coccotrypes palmarum) whose adults bore into seeds to consume part of the endosperm, but do not oviposit on them. Seed size had a marginally significant effect on seedling survival. Therefore, if any advantage is accrued by E. edulis individuals producing large seeds, this is because of greater seed germination success and seedling vigor. If this is so, even a relatively narrow range of variation in seed size as observed in the E. edulis population studied may translate into differential success of individual plants.  相似文献

Summary Amphicarpum purshii is an annual grass which mostly grows in disturbed areas of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, USA. It is amphicarpic, producing spikelets (and seeds) both above and below the soil surface. Previous research has shown that subterranean seed production ensures reproduction in the event of a major disturbance such as fire and results in rapid post-burn colonization of these sandy habitats. The effects of fire, litter, and seed depth were further examined by planting subterranean seeds at four depths in 16 litter-covered flats buried at ground level and comparing plants arising from burned flats with those in undisturbed litter-covered flats. At 0 and 1 cm depth, rates of seedling emergence were lowest in burned flats. Surface-sown seeds produced seedlings more likely to desiccate. Sowing depth had a greater influence on most measured characters than burning treatments. The mean depth of subterranean seed placement by Amphicarpum is 3.5 cm and this coincides with the seed depth from which plants showed the greatest height growth, shoot biomass, and reproductive output. In a second experiment, subterranean seeds on the bare soil surface in clay pots were more likely to lose viability and less likely to germinate than seeds protected by litter or burial in soil. In addition to providing protection from fire, placement of seeds below ground in the sandy habitat of peanutgrass provides conditions more suitable for seed survival and subsequent seedling establishment.  相似文献

Abstract. The recruitment of the relict shrub Juniperus communis on a mountain in SE Spain was studied during the period 1994–1998. The main objective was to determine both the quantitative and qualitative effects of bird dispersal on seedling establishment. Seed removal by birds, seed rain, post‐dispersal seed predation, germination, and seedling emergence and survival were analysed in different microhabitats. Birds removed 53 ‐ 89% of the seeds produced by plants. Seed rain was spatially irregular as most seeds accumulated near stones used by birds as perches and below mother plants while a few seeds were dropped in wet meadows and open ground areas. Post‐dispersal seed predation by rodents affected < 10% of dispersed seeds but varied significantly among microhabitats. Only 3.6 ‐ 5.5% of dispersed seeds appeared viable, as many seeds had aborted or showed wasp damage. Seeds germinated in the second and third springs after sowing, reaching a germination percentage of 36%. Seedling emergence was concentrated in wet meadows. Seedling mortality was high (75–80%), but significantly lower in wet meadows, the only microhabitat where seedlings could escape from summer drought, the main mortality cause. Seed abortion, germination and seedling mortality proved to be the main regeneration constraints of J. communis on Mediterranean mountains. Birds exerted a strong demographic effect, although their qualitative effect was limited by abiotic factors which caused the pattern of seed rain to differ from the final pattern of recruitment between microhabitats.  相似文献

Survivorship in Acacia suaveolens was assessed through seedling and adult stages. Moisture stress was found to be the critical factor limiting early seedling survival. Both seedling and adult populations were characterized by periods of low mortality interspersed with pulses of high mortality. A composite survivorship curve for A. suaveolens based on nine sites predicts that some 20–25 years after afire, established plants should disappear from the above-ground flora if another fire does not occur. Fecundity and survivorship data were used to estimate the flux of seed in the soil over time in a hypothetical A. suaveolens population. From this it was predicted that, following establishment of plants after a fire, the seed-bank would rapidly reach a maximum after 6 years and thereafter slowly decline, until after 60 years there would be only as many seeds as there were original parental plants. The situation would vary with predispersal seed predation, seed predation on the soil surface, seed dispersal by ants to ‘unsafe sites’ and the size of the initial seed-bank prior to establishment. Only after a very long inter-fire period would A. suaveolens be eliminated from a site. Elimination of the species is also possible under very frequent fires. A 2–5 year fire-free period is needed for plants to reach maturity and another 6 years are needed to maximize seed input into the soil seed-bank. In addition, seedling recruitment following cool burns is low to non-existent as dormancy is not broken for most seeds in the soil during such burns.  相似文献

Field, laboratory and glasshouse experiments were carried out to measure effects of seed treatments with captan or thiram on growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Field-sown captan- or thiram-treated seed gave twice as many seedlings as untreated seed. Spaced plants growing from fungicide-treated seed produced almost 6 times more dry matter 16 weeks after sowing than those from untreated seed. This effect, though diminishing with time, was still apparent more than a year after sowing. Fungicides in sterile agar growth medium were phytotoxic to seedlings at concentrations of 10μg/ml and greater. Seedlings grown from treated seeds sown from 5 to 15 mm away from developing colonies of the virulent seedling pathogenFusarium oxysporum Schlecht. were more than 4 times larger than those grown from untreated seeds. Captan-treated seed sown into pots containing field soil produced more and larger seedlings than untreated seed. Methyl bromide fumigation of the same soil also increased both number and size of seedlings. Fungicidal, rather than direct chemical effects, at early stages of seedling growth, account for increased growth of plants from fungicide-treated seed.  相似文献

  • We studied the impact caused by seed coat galls of a braconid wasp on the performance of fruits, seeds and seedlings of tree Inga laurina. We tested whether these seed galls are ‘nutrient sinks’ with respect to the fruit/seed of host plant, and so constrain the reproductive ability and reduce seedling longevity. We measured the influence of such galls on the secondary compounds, fruit and seed parameters, seed viability and germination and seedling performance.
  • Inga laurina has indehiscent legumes with polyembryonic seeds surrounded by a fleshy sarcotesta rich in sugars. The galls formed inside the seed coat and galled tissues presented higher phenol concentrations, around 7‐fold that of ungalled tissues. Galls caused a significant reduction in parameters such as fruit and seed size, seed weight and the number of embryos. Fluctuating asymmetry (a stress indicator) was 31% higher in leaves of galled seed plants in comparison to ungalled seed plants. However, the negative effects on fruit and seed parameters were not sufficient to reduce seed germination (except the synchronization index) or seedling performance (except leaf area and chlorophyll content).
  • We attributed these results to the ability of I. laurina to tolerate gall attack on seeds without a marked influence on seedling performance. Moreover, because of the intensity of seed galling on host plant, we suggest that polyembryony may play a role in I. laurina reproduction increasing tolerance to seed damage.

The effect of seed and seedling mortality on plant population dynamics depends on the degree to which the growth and reproduction of surviving individuals can compensate for the deaths that occur. To explore this issue, we sowed seeds of the annual Kummerowia stipulacea at three densities in sunken pots in the field, which contained either field soil, microwaved field soil, or microwaved field soil augmented with oospores of three Pythium species. High sowing density reduced seedling establishment and seedling size, but these effects were independent of the soil treatment. In the oospore-augmented soil, seed and seedling survival was low. The surviving plants were initially smaller but, at maturity, average plant size was greatest in the oospore-augmented soil, compared to the other treatments. Total population seed production was unaffected by soil treatment, suggesting that the effect of disease was limited to the seedling stage, with surviving plants released from intraspecific competition. To test the hypothesis that the surviving plants in the oospore-augmented soil were more disease-resistant, seeds from each of the sowing density-soil type treatments were sown in a growth chamber inoculation study. No evidence for selection for resistance was found. A second inoculation experiment revealed that oospore inoculum reduced plant numbers and mass regardless of whether field or microwaved soil was used, suggesting that results from the field experiment were not dependent on the use of microwaved soil. The findings of this study indicate that the ecological effects of disease on individual plants and on plant populations are not necessarily equivalent. Summary Seeds of Anthoxanthum odoratum were transplanted reciprocally between a xeric and a mesic field population that were genetically differentiated in adult traits. In one experiment seeds were reciprocally buried in bags in the soil, in a second experiment seeds were reciprocally sown in small plots. For most traits, site effects were much larger than seed-source effects. Germination, emergence, mortality of buried seed and recruitment were significantly higher at the xeric site than at the mesic site, irrespective of population of origin. Seed dormancy, was significantly higher for seed originating from the mesic than from the xeric population. Seedling recruits originating from the xeric population tended to be larger at both sites. Fecundity of seedling recruits depended on the environment; fecundities of plants growing in the xeric site had more than double the fecundity of plants growing in the mesic site. Phenotypic plasticity rather than population differences determined variation in performance in the seed and seedling stages.  相似文献

Relatively few studies conducted in natural plants populations focus on the relationship between seed size and their germination ability and seedling establishment. Maianthemum bifolium is a perennial herb that spreads vegetatively through rhizomatous growth and reproduces through seeds. However, this species is characterized as seed and microsite limited, and under undisturbed conditions seedlings are not noted. The studies were conducted in two populations of M. bifolium in six subsequent seasons. The mean seed mass was negatively correlated both per ramet as well as in the fruit with the number of seeds, and positively with its height and the number of flowers. The long-term mean annual production of seeds in the populations was 37 and 56 seeds per m2. The seeds from both populations had similarly high germination abilities that were approximately 90% under laboratory conditions, 60% in garden, and 55% in the natural habitat. Seeds from four size classes were sown and a positive correlation was noted between seedling establishment and the mass of the seeds from which they grew (rS = 0.64). Seedling survival was also significantly correlated with seed mass.  相似文献

Hybridization has been postulated as a main speciation mechanism in Cistus, a hard-seeded group of plants widely distributed in fire-prone Mediterranean shrublands. However, ecological evidence about how the segregation of hybrids from parents might occur is nonexistent. The presence of two hybrid populations in Morocco and Spain from Cistus albidus and Cistus heterophyllus led us to investigate their seed trait differences (seed size, mass and coat thickness) with the parentals and their seed germinability. A sowing experiment to compare the seedling emergence ability and seedling fitness of hybrids and their parentals was also carried out. Hybrid seeds germinated in a similar proportion to those of the parents. The hybrid seeds were significantly lighter, smaller and had thinner seed coats in both populations. However, these seed trait differences did not affect the seedling fitness of hybrids. These results were interpreted as a successful shift in the regeneration niche of the hybrids due to a greater proportion of soft-coated seeds, able to emerge from the soil seed bank in absence of fire. Smaller seeds also would favour further and deeper seed dispersal to escape from a fire. Monitoring of the seed yield of the Spanish population showed a competitive ability of hybrids.  相似文献

Downy mildew on sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) occurs worldwide. Contaminated seeds are considered as the primary inoculum source. So far no strategy to control the disease is available. Hence, the use of pathogen-free seeds is the only alternative to prevent disease outbreaks. Therefore, a rapid diagnostic method for seed testing is urgently needed. The sensitivity of a specific PCR method for direct detection of the downy mildew pathogen Peronospora belbahrii on basil samples, particularly on seeds, was evaluated. The applied PCR method proved to be very sensitive for direct detection of the pathogen on seeds and plant samples. The PCR detection limit of P. belbahrii in artificially infested seeds corresponded to the DNA amount of a single spore per seed. Additionally, the systemic spread of the pathogen from naturally infected seeds was investigated. The experiments showed that outgrowing basil plants were latently infected with the downy mildew pathogen, and the infection continued within the plant. Contaminated seeds were harvested from symptomless latently infected plants. These results support the implementation of PCR-based detection in a seed certification scheme and the necessity to control the pathogen on seeds. The PCR method can also be used for evaluation of pathogen control on seeds based on detection of the pathogen in outgrowing plants.  相似文献

Abstract. Post-fire seed germination, seedling mortality and seed banks were investigated in scrub-heath (kwongan) in SW Australia. Study species included herbaceous and woody, obligate seeders and resprouters in two non-bradysporous but significant plant families (Restionaceae and Epacridaceae). In all species, seedlings were recruited only in the first autumn-spring after fire and occurred in similar densities as the estimated germinable annual seed input. Seedlings were absent from unburnt vegetation. Although most species retained some residual seeds after fire, tests (excised embryo culture) indicated that a negligible number of seeds were germinable. Regardless of fire response or species, there appeared to be a large loss of seeds each year and in most cases, only a small proportion of the annual seed production was used in post-fire recovery of plants. Based on seedling: parent ratios, all species had the capacity to reconstitute parent densities from germinants in the first year after fire, but high seedling mortality and no further recruitment resulted in less seedlings than replacements for four resprouter Restionaceae and three Epacridaceae (all obligate seeders) at the end of the third year after fire.  相似文献

The effects of dispersal pattern (seeds in small clumps vs. seeds scattered in pairs) and distance to the nearest Carapa procera (Meliaceae; a tree that produces seeds preferred by terrestrial vertebrates) on survival of seeds and seedlings were examined for the animal–dispersed tree species Virola michelii (Myristicaceae) in a mature forest‘at Paracou, French Guiana, in 1992 and 1993. We assessed the putative role of ground–dwelling mammalian herbivores, rodents, and ungulates that filter the seed shadow, acting either as dispersers or predators and thus modifying the original pattern of seed dispersal made by frugivores. We measured the effects of simulated seed burial by rodents using marked seeds and quantified the effect of protecting seeds and seedlings from ground–dwelling vertebrates on seedling germination and survival with fence exclosures in 1992. Dispersal pattern had short–term but no long–term effects on the proportion of V. michelii seeds that survived one year later as seedlings. In the short term, within six weeks, clumped seeds survived better than scattered seeds in both years. Marked seeds that were removed from their site of dispersal were eaten; rodents only rarely buried seeds of V. michelii, and seed burial reduced seed and seedling survivorship. The combined effect of the factors year and Carapa proximity significantly affected seed survival within six weeks. Although six–week seed survival was greater in 1993 than in 1992, seedling establishment was lower in 1993 than in 1992 following a lower rainfall regime during the key period of seed germination (February). One–year seed and seedling survivorship was similar between treatments and years. Seed survival and seedling establishment in V. michelii was dependent on vertebrates in the short term and on climate in the long term. Overall, seed and seedling survivorship depended on a combination of these factors.  相似文献

Experiments were done to assess the role of seed-transmission in the dissemination of peanut clump virus (PCV) in groundnut (Arachis hypogea L.), and the usefulness of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting the virus in infected groundnut seed. The virus was present in 7.5% of seedling progeny from infected plants and could be detected in 16.5% of the seeds by ELISA. When groundnut seeds were grown in a field contaminated by the virus, it was shown that by roguing the infected plants, only 0.1% of the seeds from the remaining plants contained the virus. It was also established that the level of contamination of seeds by the virus was inversely proportional to the seed size.  相似文献

High variation in seed size, as is common among angiosperms, may be maintained in a plant species when several factors select for seed size. Variation may also result from differences among adult plants, such as nutrient and water availability or the amount of photosynthetic tissue. In a study of Sabal palmetto seed ecology I found high seed size variation both within- and among-palms, and investigated possible factors maintaining this variation. Seed size was positively correlated with the number of leaves on parent palms. Larger seeds produced more vigorous seedlings that had greater leaf length, area, and mass, and greater root mass. Caryobruchus gleditsiae (Bruchidae: Coleoptera), whose larvae develop within palm seeds, preferentially oviposited on larger seeds, which in turn produced larger beetle offspring. By choosing the largest seeds available, ovipositing beetles thus affect both the quantity and the quality of seeds available for recruitment. I conclude that because beetle predation selects against large seeds, while larger seeds promote seedling vigor, the maintenance of seed size variation may be an adaptation of S. palmetto promoting both seed escape from predators and seedling vigor.  相似文献

We combined laboratory and nursery experiments to analyse the effectiveness of sheep as endozoochorous seed dispersers of six native shrubby Cistaceae species collected in SE Spain (Helianthemum apenninum (L.) Mill., H. violaceum (Cav.) Pers., Fumana ericoides (Cav.) Grand., F. thymifolia (L.) Spach, Cistus monspeliensis L. and C. laurifolius L.), considering the main stages after seed ingestion, i.e. seed recovery, seed germination, seedling emergence and early seedling establishment. Seed recovery after gut passage was high (around 40%) for all the species, except F. thymifolia (12%). Most seeds (ca. 90%) were recovered within 48 h after ingestion for all the species, although seeds were still recovered up to 96 h after ingestion. Gut passage increased germination up to seven-fold compared to non-ingested seeds. Furthermore, seedling emergence from seeds contained in pellets was overall similar (intact pellets) to or higher (crumbled pellets) than emergence from seeds without dung. Survival of emerged seedlings and mass of seedlings after 20 days were not reduced by dung. Sheep act therefore as effective dispersers of these Cistaceae species by scattering seeds and promoting germination, while faeces do not hamper seedling establishment. We conclude that the interaction between herbivorous ungulates and these dry-fruited species may be considered a mutualism qualitatively similar to the mutualism between frugivorous vertebrates and fleshy-fruited plants.  相似文献
