The interest in biologically active substances (BASs) derived from marine organisms is increasing each year. These compounds are used as a basis for creating new medicines, biopreparations applied in food industry and agriculture, as well as for the production of functional foods, biologically active dietary supplements, and cosmetics. Members of the molluscan class Cephalopoda are quite promising objects for the search for new BASs. Moreover, some squid, octopus, and cuttlefish species are characterized by early onset of sexual maturity, a short lifecycle, rapid body weight gain, rapid recovery of abundance, and the ability to form dense aggregations. The substantial resources and the high species diversity make these animals a reliable source of raw materials for large-scale commercial production.  相似文献

Fermented buckwheat sprouts (FBS) are used as multifunctional foods. Their production process includes fermentation with lactic acid bacteria. The major strains were found to include Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus pentosus, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis, and Pediococcus pentosaceus in an investigation of the lactic acid bacteria. We searched for the functional components, and nicotianamine (NA) and 2″-hydroxynicotianamine (HNA) were identified as angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. NA and HNA increased during fermentation. Indole-3-ethanol was identified as an antioxidant (a SOD active substance), and may have been generated from tryptophan during fermentation because it was not contained in green buckwheat juice. A safety test demonstrated that FBS contained were safe functional food components, showing negative results in buckwheat allergy tests. Any buckwheat allergy substances might have been degraded during the fermentation process.  相似文献

Seaweeds are the primary producers of all aquatic ecosystems. Chemical constituents isolated from diverse classes of seaweeds exert a wide range of nutritional, functional and biological activities. Unique metabolites of seaweeds possess specific biological properties that make them potential ingredients of many industrial applications such as functional foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals. Cosmeceuticals of natural origin are becoming more popular than synthetic cosmetics. Hence, the investigation of new seaweeds derived functional components, a different source of natural products, has proven to be a promising area of cosmeceutical studies. Brown seaweeds also produce a range of active components including unique secondary metabolites such as phlorotannins and many of which have specific biological activities that give possibilities for their economic utilization. Brown seaweeds derived active compounds have been shown various functional properties including, antioxidant, antiwrinkling, whitening, antiinflammatory and antiallergy. It is well-known that these kind of biological effects are closely associated with cosmeceutical preparations. This communication reviews the current knowledge on brown seaweeds derived metabolites with various biological activities and the potential use as cosmeceutical ingredients. It is hoped that the reviewed literature on multifunctional properties of brown seaweeds will improve access to the seaweed based natural products specially the ability to incorporate these functional properties in cosmeceutical applications.  相似文献

In non‐Western civilizations, cyanobacteria have been part of the human diet for centuries. Today, microalgae and cyanobacteria are either produced in controlled cultivation processes or harvested from the natural habitats and marketed as food supplements around the world. Cyanobacteria produce a vast array of different biologically active compounds, some of which are expected to be used in drug development. The fact that some of the active components from cyanobacteria potentially have anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti‐inflammatory, and other effects is being used for marketing purposes. However, introduction of these products in the form of whole biomass for alimentary purposes raises concerns regarding the potential toxicity and long‐term effects on human health. Here, we review data on the use of cyanobacteria and microalgae in human nutrition and searched for available information on legislature that regulates the use of these products. We have found that, although the quality control of these products is most often self‐regulated by the manufacturers, different governmental agencies are introducing strict regulations for placing novel products, such as algae and cyanobacteria, on the market. The existing regulations require these products to be tested for the presence of toxins, such as microcystin; however, other, sometimes novel, toxins remain undetected, and their long‐term effects on human health remain unknown.  相似文献

The expression of kappa-bungarotoxin in Escherichia coli from a synthetic gene results in the production of multiple species of polypeptide. These include not only biologically active kappa-bungarotoxin but also a variety of inactive species, which include inactive monomers as well as disulfide-linked polymeric species. Identification of these species and their separation from the biologically active recombinant toxin is necessary for the use of the toxin in physiological and biochemical studies. This has been accomplished by a combination of ion-exchange and reverse-phase chromatography which results in a homogeneous toxin preparation. The active material produced is sufficient for many types of biological studies and for mutagenesis experiments directed at determining the structure function relationships of toxin interactions with the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. In addition, the kappa-bungarotoxin produced in this manner has the distinct advantage over venom-purified kappa-bungarotoxin of not being contaminated with other venom components which could potentially affect experimental observations.  相似文献

Phytoestrogens represent a family of plant compounds such as isoflavones, flavones and lignans. A variety of these plant compounds have been identified in various human body fluids. A wide range of commonly consumed foods contains appreciable amounts of these different phytoestrogens, viz. soy products are particularly good sources of isoflavones and lignans. Accumulating evidences from molecular and cellular biology experiments, animal studies, and to a limited extent, human clinical trials suggests that phytoestrogens may potentially confer health benefits related to various cancers and diseases such as cardiovascular disorder. The evidences reviewed here represent the beneficial effects of most potential and promising isoflavone, Genistein in various types of cancers.  相似文献

As the largest organ in the human body, the skin has multiple functions of which one of the most important is the protection against various harmful stressors. The keratinised stratified epidermis and an underlying thick layer of collagen-rich dermal connective tissues are important components of the skin. The environmental stressors such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and pollution increase the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), contributing to clinical manifestations such as wrinkle formation and skin aging. Skin aging is related to the reduction of collagen production and decrease of several enzymatic activities including matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which degrade collagen structure in the dermis; and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which inhibit the action of MMPs. In addition to alterations of DNA, signal transduction pathways, immunology, UVR, and pollution activate cell surface receptors of keratinocytes and fibroblasts in the skin. This action leads to a breakdown of collagen in the extracellular matrix and a shutdown of new collagen synthesis. Therefore, an efficient antioxidants strategy is of major importance in dermis and epidermis layers. Marine resources have been recognised for their biologically active substances. Among these, marine algae are rich-sources of metabolites, which can be used to fight against oxidative stress and hence skin aging. These metabolites include, among others, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), polysaccharides, sulphated polysaccharides, glucosyl glycerols, pigments, and polyphenols. This paper reviews the role of oxidative processes in skin damage and the action of the compounds from algae on the physiological processes to maintain skin health.  相似文献

由于食物的精加工和生活习惯改变,运动减少,现代人的肠道健康状况下降,肠道疾病发病率不断增加,这已经影响到人们的身体健康和日常生活。肠道疾病的发生多与有毒有害物质在肠道内过久滞留,引起肠道环境改变恶化,进而损伤肠道细胞并引发各类炎症有关。本研究综述了59篇有关于膳食纤维和肠道相互作用的文献。研究表明摄入膳食纤维有助于促进肠道蠕动,保持大便顺畅,防止便秘,清除肠道内的有毒有害物质,保持肠道清洁和促进肠道内的益生菌生长等功效。而且,膳食纤维对肠易激综合征,炎症性肠病和肠癌等常见肠道疾病也具有一定的预防和治疗作用。综上,膳食纤维的摄人有益于保持肠道正常生理功能,修复和改善受损肠道环境,对于维护肠道健康有重要意义。  相似文献

A biostimulant is an organic material that, when applied in small quantities, enhances plant growth and development such that the response cannot be attributed to the application of traditional plant nutrients. This review is aimed at highlighting developments in the processing of macroalgae for agricultural biostimulants (AB), summarising the biologically active components of brown macroalgae and examining the factors supporting the use of macroalgal AB for managing abiotic and biotic stresses in crop plants. The policy drivers supporting the use of macroalgal-derived ABs in agriculture are also emphasised. We examine the use of macroalgal ABs in crop production and evaluated the benefits of seed priming, foliar application, soil drenches and hydroponic treatments. The use of macroalgal ABs on crop plants can generate multiple benefits with reported effects including enhanced rooting, higher crop and fruit yields, freezing, drought and salt tolerance, enhanced photosynthetic activity and resistance to fungi, bacteria and virus. ABs can be applied as an alternative, or used in conjunction with synthetic crop protection products and plant growth regulators, and may have a role in maintaining crop production levels, health and quality in the future when many active ingredients will be lost to the industry due to changes in European Union regulations. Worldwide, macroalgae remain largely unexploited, we highlight some of the future research and development priorities.  相似文献

For centuries, fermented soy foods have been dietary staples in Asia and, now, in response to consumer demand, they are available throughout the world. Fermentation bestows unique flavors, boosts nutritional values and increases or adds new functional properties. In this review, we describe the functional properties and underlying action mechanisms of soy-based fermented foods such as Natto, fermented soy milk, Tempeh and soy sauce. When possible, the contribution of specific bioactive components is highlighted. While numerous studies with in vitro and animal models have hinted at the functionality of fermented soy foods, ascribing health benefits requires well-designed, often complex human studies with analysis of diet, lifestyle, family and medical history combined with long-term follow-ups for each subject. In addition, the contribution of the microbiome to the bioactivities of fermented soy foods, possibly mediated through direct action or bioactive metabolites, needs to be studied. Potential synergy or other interactions among the microorganisms carrying out the fermentation and the host's microbial community may also contribute to food functionality, but the details still require elucidation. Finally, safety evaluation of fermented soy foods has been limited, but is essential in order to provide guidelines for consumption and confirm lack of toxicity.  相似文献

In Europe, endocrine disruptors (EDs) have been defined as substances foreign to the body that have deleterious effects on the individuals or their descendants, due to changes in endocrine function. In the United States, EDs have been described as exogenous agents that interfere with the production, release, transport, metabolism, binding, action or elimination of the natural ligands responsible for maintaining homeostasis and regulating body development. These two definitions are complementary, but both indicate that the effects induced by EDs probably involve mechanisms relating in some way to hormonal homeostasis and action. EDs are generally described as substances with anti-oestrogenic, oestrogenic, anti-androgenic or androgenic effects. More recently, other targets have been evidenced such as the thyroid and immune system. Many different EDs are present in the various compartments of the environment (air, water and land) and in foods (of plant and animal origin). They may originate from food packaging, combustion products, plant health treatments, detergents and the chemical industry in general. In addition to the potential effects of these compounds on adults, the sensitivity of embryos and fetuses to many of the xenobiotic compounds likely to cross the placenta has raised considerable concern and led to major research efforts. With the exception of the clearly established links between diethylstilbestrol, reproductive health abnormalities and cancers, very little is known for certain about the effects of EDs on human health. Given the lack of available data, current concerns about the possible involvement of EDs in the increase in the incidence of breast cancer, and possibly of endometriosis and early puberty in girls, remain hypothetical. Conversely, the deterioration in male reproductive health is at the heart of preoccupations and progress in analyses of the relationship between EDs and human health. This literature review aims to describe the current state of knowledge about endocrine disruption, focusing in particular on the problem of food contaminants.  相似文献

UV is the most abundant human carcinogen, and protection from extensive exposure to it is a widespread human health issue. The use of chemicals (sunscreens) for protection is intuitive and efficacious. However, these chemicals may become activated to reactive intermediates when absorbing energy from UV, thus producing damage themselves, which may manifest itself in phototoxic, photoallergenic or photocarcinogenic reactions in humans. The development of safe sunscreens for humans is of high interest. Similar issues have been observed for some therapeutically used principles such as PUVA therapy for psoriasis or porphyrins for phototherapy of human cancers. Photoactivation has also been reported as a side effect of various pharmaceuticals such as the antibacterial fluoroquinolones. In this context, the authors have been involved over more than 20 years in the development and refinement of assays to test for photomutagenicity as an unwanted side effect of UV-mediated activation of such chemicals for cosmetic or pharmaceutical use. The initial years of great hopes for simple mammalian cell-based assays for photomutagenicity to screen out substances of concern for human use were followed by many years of collaborative trials to achieve standardization. However, it is now realized that this topic, albeit of human safety relevance, is highly complex and subject to many artificial modifiers, especially in vitro in mammalian cell culture. Thus, it is not really suitable for being engineered into a general testing framework within cosmetic or pharmaceutical testing guidelines. Much knowledge has been generated over the years to arrive at the conclusion that yes, photomutagenicity does exist with the use of chemicals, but how to best test for it will require a sophisticated case-by-case approach. Moreover, in comparison to the properties and risks of exposure to UV itself, it remains a comparatively minor human safety risk to address. In considering risks and benefits, we should also acknowledge beneficial effects of UV on human health, including an essential role in the production of Vitamin D. Thus, the interrelationships between UV, chemicals and human health remain a fascinating topic of research.  相似文献

燕窝作为一种名贵药材,来自雨燕科若干种金丝燕用唾液筑成的巢穴。随着对燕窝资源需求的持续增长,全面深入地认识燕窝的营养和药用价值十分必要。我们对该领域的相关研究进行了综述,内容涉及燕窝所含的水溶性蛋白、碳水化合物、无机盐、微量元素等化学成分,及它们具有的促有丝分裂、抑制流感病毒、抗凝血、改善骨骼强度等生物活性。目前的研究重点应放在燕窝重要生物活性成分的分离和纯化方面,在深入了解燕窝物质基础的同时通过完善质量标准以保证药材质量安全和可靠。  相似文献

Accumulating evidence suggests that oxidized fats and lipid oxidation products in the diet can contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The present review summarizes studies that show that oxidized fat and lipid oxidation products are present in human foods; that these compounds are absorbed by the intestine and appear in the blood circulation; and that these ingested substances can have deleterious cardiovascular effects in both humans and experimental animals. However, considerable additional research is required to establish the extent to which dietary fat oxidation poses a threat to human health and/or longevity.  相似文献

High frequency of translocation and persistence of intestine microflora and its components in system bloodstream is shown. The immunomodulatory effects of morphine and the active components of marijuana, particularly tetrahydrocannabinol, on various aspects of the host immune parameters include alterations in humoral, cell-mediated and innate immunity. Most studies have shown immunosuppressive effects due to use of these abused substances, although there are reports that they may not produce any deleterious effect and may even enhance some aspects of host immunity. They reduce resistance to cancer growth and microbial pathogens in animals.  相似文献
