Primary production and distribution and abundance of phyto- and zooplankton of lake Manzala were investigated from June 1985 to June 1986.Primary production varied from 4.1 to 28.7 g O2 m–2 d–1 with the highest values 24.2 and 28.7 g O2 m–2 d–1 recorded in the eastern and southern sectors and the lowest value 4.1 g O2 m–2 d–1 recorded in the northern sector. The seasonal mean production for the lake was estimated at 13.3 g O2 m–2 d–1.Mean phytoplankton abundance ranged from 32.7 107 to 76.1 107 cells m–3 with a mean value of 48.107 cells m–3. Diatoms were the dominant phytoplankton group comprising 52 to 90 % by number. The greatest relative abundance (87 to 90%) was recorded in the southern sector.Mean zooplankton abundance ranged from 30.1 103 to 44.4 103 organisms m–3 in the eastern sector to 5.5.103 in the northern sector. In response of eutrophication, the species composition changed significantly over the last 20 years. Cladocerans represented less than 1% of zooplankton during 1959/60, but 75% in 1985/86. Rotifers constituted 40% in 1959/60, and only 1% in 1985/86. Cirriped larvae declined from 21% to 1%.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in primary production, individual numbers, and biomass of phyto- and zooplankton was studied in the River Danube in 1981. The secondary production of two dominant zooplankton species (Bosmina longirostris and Acanthocyclops robustus) was also estimated. In the growing season (April–Sept.) individual numbers dry weights and chlorophyll a contents of phytoplankton ranged between 30–90 × 106 individuals, l–1, 3–12 mg l–1, and 50–170 µg l–1, respectively. Species of Thalassiosiraceae (Bacillariophyta) dominated in the phytoplankton with a subdominance of Chlorococcales in summer. Individual numbers and dry weights of crustacean zooplankton ranged between 1400–6500 individuals m–3, and 1.2–12 mg m–3, respectively. The daily mean gross primary production was 970 mg C m–3 d–1, and the net production was 660 mg C m–3 d–1. Acanthocyclops robustus populations produced 0.2 mg C m–3 d–1 as an average, and Bosmina longirostris populations 0.07 mg C m–3 d–1. The ecological efficiency between phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton was 0.03%.  相似文献

Monthly averages of standing stock wet biomass of zooplankton in Lake Kinneret (Israel) varied between 11 and 76 g m–2 during 1969–1981, with the exception of two months. Averaged contributions of different groups were: Cladocera 58%, Copepoda 35% and Rotifera 7%. Total standing crop wet biomass is highest during January–June, averages varied between 35 and 50 g m–2, and decreases during summer–fall (23–36 g m–2). The winter biomass of Cladocera fluctuated between 22 and 35 g m–2 and dropped to a range of 9–23 g m–2 in summer, whereas copepod biomass varied very little around an average of 18 g (ww) m–2 with the exception of low values from April to June. The stock biomass of Rotifera is relatively high during winter floods season (December-March) whilst in summer it is very low.Young stages of fish in Lake Kinneret feed mostly on zooplankton and zoobenthic forms. The most abundant fish in the Kinneret ecosystem, Mirogrex terraesanctae terraesanctae, also feed on zooplankton at the adult stage throughout the year, and herbivorous fish consume zooplankton during the summer when lake plankton resources are limited. The summer ecosystem of Lake Kinneret is characterised as a steady state type, in which the impact of the zooplankton-chain is of great importance. Increase of predation pressure on zooplankton by fish can disequilibrate the balanced trophic relations existing between nannoplankton production and zooplankton grazing capacity. Such a situation can lead to organics accumulation as nannoplankton blooms, resulting in water quality deterioration. Management options aimed at preventing collapse of zooplankton populations are discussed.  相似文献

L. Peipsi is one of the richest fish lakes in Europe. Planktivorous smelt dominates in the fish fauna. The abundance of zooplankton fluctuates between 43 600–2241 500 ind m–3, with the average 974 000 ind m–3, biomass ranges from 0,09–3,69 g m–3, with the average 1,86 g m–3. Since the 1960s the abundance of rotifers has risen considerably while the mean zooplankter weight (B/N) has decreased from 0.005 mg to 0.004 mg. Zooplankton production (herbivores 20.6, predators 1.8, whole zooplankton community 22.4 g C m–2 per period between May and October) can be considered high. Predatory zooplankton eats on an average 50% of the production of herbivorous zooplankton; about 50% of the whole zooplankton production (PFilt + Pred) reaches fishes. The production of herbivorous zooplankton constitutes 10.1% of primary production. This ratio indicates a direct relationship between zoo- and phytoplankton in the food chain; the detrital food chain seems of little importance. About 6% of phytoplankton energy reaches fishes. The transformation of energy in the food web is efficient. On the basis of zooplankton L. Peipsi can be considered a moderately eutrophic or meso-eutrophic lake.  相似文献

During the Lake Towada survey from April through October 1998, we measured primary production at shore and offshore stations, and calculated crustacean zooplankton production from samples collected at the offshore station. We then analyzed these data and compared them with commercial fishery data in order to discuss the energy flow in this lake where kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka) fisheries are one of the main businesses. At all stations, primary production was relatively high: 150–300mgCm–2day–1 in April–mid-June and lower at ca. 100mgCm–2day–1 thereafter. The variation in primary productivity could largely be explained by multiple regression models that included phytoplankton biomass and ambient nutrient conditions as independent variables. Among zooplankton, rotifers had their peak abundance in May, before the crustacean zooplankton (Daphnia longispina, Bosmina longirostris, and Acanthodiaptomus pacificus) population was well established. D. longispina dominated the crustacean zooplankton community in terms of biomass and production; their production during the study period made up 80% of crustacean community production (19.6gdry-wtm–2), which was 40% of primary production during the survey. In July, when the abundance of D. longispina was particularly high, their daily production slightly exceeded daily primary production, which resulted in ca. 30% and 75% reduction in the amount of particulate organic carbon and chlorophyll a, respectively, during this period. The community ingestion rate of crustacean zooplankton, calculated from their daily production (D. longispina accounted for 90%) and the assumption that their gross production efficiency (K1) was 60%, could roughly explain this reduction of particulate matter, corroborating previous studies that the grazing of D. longispina can significantly improve the water transparency of this lake. The catch of kokanee and pond smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus nipponensis, another important fish in the lake) during the survey corresponded to 1.1% of crustacean community production, and corresponded to 0.45% of the primary production, which is one of the highest recorded values. Bearing in mind that D. longispina was the major food item of planktivorous fish such as kokanee and pond smelt, the present study suggests that the energy transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton to fish is outstandingly efficient, compared with other aquatic ecosystems, when D. longispina dominates in the lake.  相似文献

Primary production of phytoplankton and standing crops of zooplankton and zoobenthos were intensively surveyed in Lake Teganuma during May 1983–April 1984. The annual mean chlorophyll a concentrations were as high as 304 µg · l–1–383 µg · l–1. The daily gross primary production of phytoplankton was high throughout the year. The peak production rate was recorded in August and September, when blue-green algae bloomed. The annual gross primary production was estimated as 1450 g C · m–2 · y–1, extremely high as compared with other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zooplankton was predominantly composed of rotifers. The annual mean standing crop of zooplankton was 0.182 g C · m–2 around the middle between the inlets and the outlet and was lower than in most other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zoobenthos was mostly composed of Oligochaeta and chironomids. The annual mean standing crop of zoobenthos ranged from 0.052 g C · m–2 to 0.265 g C · m–2, the lowest values among temperate eutrophic lakes, which is in contrast to the high primary production.  相似文献

About 650 zooplankton samples were collected from Lake Inarijärvi in 1977–1979 from the littoral and pelagial zones of the lake. One hundred and twenty-three zooplankton taxa were found and most of them can be considered euplanktonic. The most important species were Holopedium gibberum, Daphnia cristata, Cyclops spp. and Eudiaptomus spp. Mean pelagial zooplankton biomass was 0.29 g m–3 in the 0–5 m depth zone, 0.17 g m–3 in 5–10 m and 0.11 g m–3 in 10–20 m.The zooplankton biomass at a sandy shore was about 0.09 g m–3, at a stony shore 0.05 g m–3 and at a vegetated shore 0.76 g m–3. About 70% of the whole zooplankton production consisted of crustaceans. The sum of herbivore and carnivore zooplankton production in the pelagial area during the summer was 210–330 kg ha–1 × 3 months.  相似文献

Benthic oxygen consumption and primary production were measured using the bell jar technique in deltaic and fringing mangrove forests of tropical northeastern Australia. In a deltaic forest, rates of sediment respiration ranged from 197 to 1645 mol O2 m–2 h–1 (mean=836), but did not vary significantly with season or intertidal zone. Gross primary production varied among intertidal zones and seasons, ranging from –281 to 1413 mol O2 m–2 h–1 (mean=258). Upon tidal exposure, rates of gross primary production increased, but respiration rates did not change significantly. In a fringing mangrove forest, benthic respiration and gross primary production exhibited strong seasonality. In both forests, rates of oxygen consumption and production were low compared to salt marshes, but equivalent to rates in other mangrove forests. The production:respiration (P/R) ratio varied greatly over space and time (range:–0.61 to 1.76), but most values were «1 with a mean of 0.15, indicating net heterotrophy. On a bare creek bank and a sandflat, rates of gross primary production and P/R ratios were generally higher than in the adjacent mangroves. Low microalgal standing stocks, low light intensity under the canopy, and differences in gross primary production between mangroves and tidal flats, and with tidal status, indicate that benthic microalgae are light-limited and a minor contributor to primary productivity in these tropical mangrove forests.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation by periphyton and plankton was measured on the Amazon flood-plain using the acetylene reduction method calibrated with15N-N2. The average ratio (± SD) of moles C2H4 reduced per mole N2-N fixed was 3.4 ± 0.7, similar to other studies. Periphyton and plankton had high rates of light-dependent nitrogen fixation, with dark nitrogen fixation averaging 26% of the average rates in the light. The average daily (24 h) rates for periphyton nitrogen fixation in 1989 and 1990 were 1.79 and 0.51 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1 respectively, which are comparable to summer rates in many temperate cyanobacterial assemblages. Nitrogen fixation was depressed at N03 concentrations as low as 0.5 M, and was below detection limits at concentrations of 4 M, which occurred during periods of river flooding. Planktonic nitrogen fixation rates were high (0.5–0.8 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1) during the high-water and drainage phases of the annual hydrograph when the floodplain waters were draining towards the river (low NO3 ), but rates were undetectable (< 0.05 mmol N2-N·m–2·d–1) when there was river flooding (high NO3 ). Nitrogen fixation by periphyton and plankton in 1989–1990 accounted for approximately 8% of previously reported total annual nitrogen inputs to the floodplain at Lake Calado.  相似文献

Direct measurements of net production rates and pore water profiles of solutes in the fine-grained sediments of Saginaw Bay, imply corresponding steady-state fluxes to the overlying water of 1.1–1.3 (I), 450–1010 (NH4 +), 1250–2650 (Si(OH)4), 3000–3400 (Ca2+), 440–1330 (Mg2+), 1.5–728 (Fe2+), and 179–281 (Mn2+) moles/m2/day and 11.0–11.8 (alkalinity) meq/m2/day at 17.5 °C. Silica production rates in sediments apparently follow first order kinetics with a rate coefficient of 0.09/day and a steady-state silica concentration of 1.2 mM at 23.5°C. The remaining solutes follow kinetics approximately independent of solute concentration over the range of concentrations observed. Measured solute production rates are consistent with observed solute profiles only if lateral diffusion gradients are maintained in the sediments by the burrowing and irrigation activity of benthic organisms such asChironomous, the dominant burrower in Saginaw Bay. Assuming that solute fluxes from Saginaw Bay are representative of all of the post-glacial sediments of Lake Huron, the iodine flux from sediments is comparable to the total fluvial input of iodine. The extrapolated silica fluxes from Lake Huron sediments balance the estimated biogenic silica flux to the sediments.  相似文献

The Nilnag (alt. 2180 m) situated in the Kashmir Himalayas, marks the beginning of the dimictic lake series of this region. The high turbidity of water (t : % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGadiiEayaara% aaaa!3703!\[\bar x\] = 1.16) as a result of accelerated particle movement from the adjoining terrestrial ecosystem, has affected the sensitive macroflora which was recorded five decades ago. The lake water chemistry depicts a cation pattern which is dominated by divalent calcium (Ca++ > Mg++ > Na+ > K+) and the anions by a carbonate-bicarbonate system (HCO3 > SO4 > Cl). The ionic composition of the lake water comes close to the World Standard for freshwater lakes. The levels of ortho-phosphate and nitrate-nitrogen are not very high, indicating moderate fertility of the lake. The phytoplankton production, as measured by 14C isotope technique, ranged from 120–562 mgCassim m–2 d–1 during the ice-free period (1975–76) with an annual estimated yield of 90–100 gC m–2. The vertical distribution of production is suggestive of plankton rich lake water. In its general limnological features, the Nilnag resembles mesotrophic lakes of the Kashmir valley.Formed a part of thesis for which Ph.D. was awarded to MAK by Kashmir UniversityFormed a part of thesis for which Ph.D. was awarded to MAK by Kashmir University  相似文献

A rich and varied meiofauna inhabits a Cornish mudflat near the mouth of the Tamar River in southwestern England. Population densities range from 117 to 943 individuals · g–1 (wet) sediment (1.4–11.4 × 106 individuals · m–2), with foraminifera, harpacticoid copepods and nematodes appearing in nearly equal numbers and comprising most of the meiofauna. Seasonally, meiofaunal numbers rise and fall with solar radiation and vary inversely with river discharge. Two species, the atestate allogromiid A and the calcareous Haynesina germanica (Ehrenberg), far outnumber other foraminifera; their population densities and growth rates reach maxima in spring and summer.Monthly rates of sediment respiration are locally variable, but clearly increase from winter (4.13 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in December) to spring (38.87 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in April). Experiments and calculations ascribe approximately 30% of this total to the meiofauna (including microfauna and microflora), 50% to bacteria and less than 20% to chemical oxidation. A tentative energy budget for the mudflat suggests that secondary production by meiofauna is small as compared with coastal environments elsewhere, and that meiofaunal production (426 Kcal · m–2 · y–1) is nearly twice meiofaunal respiration (252 Kcal · m–2 · yr–1).  相似文献

A major decrease in air temperature with an increase in wind stress created thermal instability resulting in overturn. Surface oxygen values decreased from 12.6 (170% saturation) prior to overturn to 0.4 mg · l–1 (5.7%) after overturn. Recovery of surface oxygen concentrations to supersaturation took approximately three months. Changes in the nitrogen balance after overturn indicated that extremely high rates of nitrification occurred. Little change in phosphorus concentration was observed. Surface chlorophyll concentrations decreased from 235 to approximately 2 mg · m–3, resulting in very low primary production values (Amax = 12.4 mg C m–3 h–1). Reduced rates of primary production were maintained for several months after overturn, mainly owing to the low ratio of Zeu/Zm (0.17). No significant changes occurred in the total bacterial population other than a redistribution within the water column. Significant changes occurred in the distribution and density of the zooplankton population. No fish kills were observed although fish populations were oxygen-stressed.  相似文献

Primary production in Watts Lake, Vestfold Hills, Antarctica (68°36S, 78°13E), was measured from March 1981 to February 1982. Phytoplankton production peaked in autumn and spring, with a September maximum (340 mgC m–2 d–1), then declined in summer and was not detectable in winter. Benthic algal production peaked in summer at 74 mgC m–2 d–1), Production strategies differed, with the more efficient phytoplankton adapted to growth at low light, while benthic production increased with increasing light in summer. Estimation of annual production was 10.1 gC m–2 and 5.5 gC m–2 for the phytoplankton and benthos respectively.  相似文献

To quantify the effects of nutrient enrichment (N and P) and zooplankton grazing on the phytoplankton community structure of El Andino reservoir (Venezuela), in situ microcosms were installed for 6–7 days. Microcosms consisted of polyethylene bags (42 cm × 71 cm, non-cylindrical shaped) filled with 10 l of filtered epilimnetic water. Experiments were carried out on a monthly basis from January to December 1993. The lack/addition of nutrients was cross-classified with the absence/presence of zooplankton, resulting in an experimental design of four treatment levels: (1) no nutrient addition, zooplankton absent (C); (2) nutrient addition (150 NH4Cl mol ml–1 and 10 KH2PO4 mol ml–1; 1 ml per l of sample), zooplankton absent (N); (3) no nutrient addition, zooplankton present (collected from the reservoir water column using a 6-m vertical tow with a 80-m plankton net) (Z); and (4) nutrient addition (as in [2]), zooplankton present (as in [3]) (NZ). Treatments were triplicated, and samples were collected at the start and end of each experiment. Significant differences between treatments were determined using a two-way ANOVA at p<0.05. Nutrient enrichment caused an increase in phytoplankton biomass, with the increase of all algal groups, except Pyrrhophyta. In spite of this, relative proportions of Cyanobacteria decreased in most cases. Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta increased, probably due to their greater competitive abilities for phosphorus. After enrichment, Scenedesmus was the dominant species from January to June, while from July to December, Dactylococcopsis and Lyngbya dominated in the enriched microcosms. Zooplankton affected the phytoplankton community in microcoms through grazing and nutrient (mainly P) regeneration. Cladocerans (Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma sp.) mainly grazed on diatoms, although particulate material was present in almost all the gut contents analyzed. Particulate material probably consisted of micro-algae, detritus, bacteria, triturated algae and mineral particles. Ostracoda mainly fed on Peridinium and particulate material, whereas Thermocyclops sp. and rotifers (Brachionus spp. and Keratella spp.) mainly ingested particulate material. On the other hand, zooplankton excretion caused a slight increase in phytoplankton biomass and P concentrations in microcosms with the animals present. The effects of nutrient and zooplankton did not interact in most cases. Experimental results suggest that, at the initial stages of a eutrophication process, phytoplankton could increase their abundance and biomass, but might not change its community structure. Since there was a strong correlation between phosphorus and chlorophyll-a (bottom-up control), it is suggested that eutrophication could be avoided by controlling P input to the reservoir.  相似文献

Microbial activity under alpine snowpacks, Niwot Ridge, Colorado   总被引:19,自引:9,他引:10
Experiments were conducted during 1993 at Niwot Ridge in the Colorado Front Range to determine if the insulating effect of winter snow cover allows soil microbial activity to significantly affect nitrogen inputs and outputs in alpine systems. Soil surface temperatures under seasonal snowpacks warmed from –14 °C in January to 0 °C by May 4th. Snowmelt began in mid-May and the sites were snow free by mid June. Heterotrophic microbial activity in snow-covered soils, measured as C02 production, was first identified on March 4, 1993. Net C02 flux increased from 55 mg CO2-C m–2 day–1 in early March to greater than 824 mg CO2-C m-2 day–1 by the middle of May. Carbon dioxide production decreased in late May as soils became saturated during snowmelt. Soil inorganic N concentrations increased before snowmelt, peaking between 101 and 276 mg kg–1 soil in May, and then decreasing as soils became saturated with melt water. Net N mineralization for the period of March 3 to May 4 ranged from 2.23 to 6.63 g N m–2, and were approximately two orders of magnitude greater than snowmelt inputs of 50.4 mg N m–2 for NH4 + and 97.2 mg N m–2 for NO3 . Both NO3 and NH4 + concentrations remained at or below detection limits in surface water during snowmelt, indicating the only export of inorganic N from the system was through gaseous losses. Nitrous oxide production under snow was first observed in early April. Production increased as soils warned, peaking at 75 g N2O-N m–2 day–1 in soils saturated with melt water one week before the sites were snow free. These data suggest that microbial activity in snow-covered soils may play a key role in alpine N cycling before plants become active.  相似文献

Microscopic epilithic algae in the River Itchen at Otterbourne near Southampton and in the Ober Water in the New Forest were studied during 1984 and 1985. The River Itchen rises from chalk springs and has a steady pH near 8.2 and a mean alkalinity of 236 mg HCO3 1–1; at the study site the river is about 16 m wide and 20 cm deep, with a mean flow rate of 0.33 m s–1 and a discharge ranging through the year between 0.34 and 2.46 m3 s–1. The Ober Water, which drains sands and gravels, has a pH between 6.9 and 7.2 and a mean alkalinity of about 50 mg HCO3 1–1; at the study site it is about 6 m wide, with a mean flow rate of 0.27 m s–1 and a discharge ranging through the year between 0.08 and 1.0 m3 s–1.Epilithic algae removed from the pebbles that form the major part of the beds of both streams show seasonal changes in abundance and composition. Diatoms peaked in April/May and dominate the epilithic flora in both streams, comprising 70–95% of all algal cells; highest numbers of chlorophytes occurred in summer and cyanophytes increased in autumn. The species composition of the epilithic flora in the two streams was different, as was the population density; algal cell numbers ranged between 500 and 7000 cells mm–2 of stream floor in the River Itchen and between 8 and 320 cells mm–2 of stream floor in the Ober Water. The chlorophyll a content of epilithic algae in the River Itchen ranged between 115 and 415 mg m–2 of stream floor, representing an annual mean biomass of about 8 g m–2, whereas in the Ober Water a chlorophyll a content of 2.2 to 44 mg m–2 of stream floor was found, representing an annual mean biomass of about 1 g m–2. Cautious estimates of the annual production of epilithic algae in these streams suggest a value of about 600 g organic dry weight m–2 in the River Itchen and about 75 g m–2 in the Ober Water.  相似文献

The FLooded Upland Dynamics Experiment (FLUDEX) at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in northwest Ontario was designed to test the hypothesis that methylmercury (MeHg) production in reservoirs is related to the amount, and subsequent decomposition, of flooded organic matter. Three upland forest sites that varied in the amounts of organic carbon stored in vegetation and soils (Low C, 30,870 kg C ha−1; Medium C, 34,930 kg C ha−1; and High C, 45,860 kg C ha−1) were flooded annually from May to September with low-organic carbon, low-MeHg water pumped from a nearby lake. Within five weeks of flooding, MeHg concentrations in the reservoir outflows exceeded those in reservoir inflows and remained elevated for the duration of the experiment, peaking at 1.60 ng L−1 in the Medium C reservoir. We estimated the net production of MeHg in each reservoir by calculating annual changes in pools of MeHg stored in flooded soils, periphyton, zooplankton, and fish. Overall, there was an initial pulse of MeHg production (range = 120–1590 ng m−2 day−1) in all FLUDEX reservoirs that lasted for 2 years, after which time net demethylation (range = 360–1230 ng MeHg degraded m−2 day−1) began to reduce the pools of MeHg in the reservoirs, but not back to levels found prior to flooding. Rates of MeHg production were generally related to the total amount of organic carbon flooded to create the reservoirs. Large increases in MeHg stores in soils compared to those in water and biota indicate that flooded soils were the main sites of MeHg production. This study should assist hydroelectric utilities and government agencies in making informed decisions about selecting sites for future reservoir development to reduce MeHg contamination of the reservoir fisheries.  相似文献

Phytoplankton production was measured in situ in Kainji lake from December 1970 to September 1972 using the oxygen light and dark bottle technique. Seasonal variations in solar radiation, transparency, temperature, and composition of subsurface light were also measured. Oxygen production per unit area varied from 220 to 4500 mg O2 m–2 day–1, the maximum production rate from 95 to 400 mg O2 m–3 h–1. Seasonal mixing of lake water and river water of varying turbidity changed the optical properties of the lake water and consequently affected phytoplankton production. The annual flood pattern was found to be an important factor regulating phytoplankton production in the lake.  相似文献

Dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) concentration and composition and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were measured over 16 months at three depths in hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa and in its two perenially inflowing rivers. The range of DFAA concentrations in the reservoir and both rivers were similar with dominant DFAA consisting of serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine in all three systems. The range of DOC concentrations in the rivers was 1.5–11.1 mg l–1, the major river (Crocodile) having about twice the DOC concentration of the Magalies River. The DFAA/DOC ratios ranged between 0.02–1.1% in the Crocodile River and 0.13–3.7% in the Magalies River. DFAA and DOC concentrations were positively correlated to the Magalies River flow, but for the Crocodile River, which received domestic and industrial effluents, DOC was inversely correlated to flow. The source of DFAA in both rivers was mainly terrestrial, in contrast to the main DOC source in the Crocodile River which was the effluents. The DFAA load of the Crocodile River ranged between 0.22 and 208 kg C d–1.DOC (5.0–24.8mg l–1) in Hartbeespoort Dam generally decreased with depth but DFAA (15–4800 nmol l–1) concentration showed no clear trend. The DFAA/DOC ratios varied between 0.02 and 2.9%. DFAA concentrations were correlated (r = 0.3, n = 30, p = 0.04) with bacterial numbers at 0 and 10 m only while no significant correlations were found with bacterial production, chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton primary and EDOC (extracellular DOC) production at any depth. The rate of bacterial utilization of DFAA was low compared with data from other lakes. Diurnal phytoplankton production of DFAA in the euphotic zone of the whole lake was calculated to vary between 268 and 30 780 t C d–1 indicating autochthonous DFAA sources were dominant to allochthonous DFAA sources. The autochthonous production of DFAA was > 2 × gross bacterial production of the euphotic zone indicating that although DFAA concentrations were frequently < 10 g C l–1, the rate of DFAA production exceeded bacterial requirements.  相似文献
