Two known sesquiterpene lactones, antheindurolides A and B, together with five new related lactones with the same unusual skeleton were isolated from the aerial parts of Anthemis arvensis growing in Serbia. The originally proposed structure of antheindurolide B was revised. This (antheindurolide) type of lactones, detected so far only in the genus Anthemis (Anthemis indurata, Anthemis pseudocotula and Anthemis cotula) could be of chemotaxonomic significance.  相似文献

The phytochemical study of the aerial parts of Verbesina sphaerocephala A. Gray afforded six sesquiterpene lactones of cadinene type, five of them described for the first time, along with known phenyl propanoids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds. Structures on new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques including CD and X-ray analyses, and known compounds were identified by comparing their spectral data with those previously reported. Cadinene-like sesquiterpene lactones could be characteristic metabolites of V. sphaerocephala.  相似文献

The leaves, litter, and soil from within a community of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana were analyzed for secondary metabolic products. Methacrolein, five monterpenes, three sesquiterpene lactones, six coumarins, and one flavonoid were identified in the leaves; the contents of the litter were nearly identical. Soils collected directly beneath the shrubs contained the three sesquiterpene lactones, two coumarins and an unknown flavonoid. The litter and water extracts of the litter inhibited the germination of sagebrush seeds. Soils charged with monoterpenes from sagebrush leaves also inhibited seed germination. In addition, the monoterpene contents from eight sagebrush taxa collected from Western Montana are reported.  相似文献

Twenty-five Frullania species (liverworts) were chemically investigated. Fourteen species produce allergy-inducing sesquiterpene lactones. Eighteen species contain bibenzyls. The sesquiterpene lactones and bibenzyls are obtained as the major components and they are valuable chemosystematic markers of Frullania species. On the basis of their chemical constituents, Frullania species can be divided into five chemotypes: sesquiterpene lactone-bibenzyl type; sesquiterpene lactone type; bibenzyl type; monoterpene type and cyclocolorenone type.  相似文献

The aerial parts of Centaurea grisebachii ssp. grisebachii, a Greek endemic species belonging to section Acrolophus (Cass.) DC., were investigated for the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactones. The eudesmanolide, 4-epi-malacitenolide was the major compound. In addition to the sesquiterpene lactones, five flavonoid aglycons, two lignans, one nor-isoprenoid and one sterol were found.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Stereochemical variation is widely known to influence the bioactivity of compounds in the context of pharmacology and pesticide science, but our understanding of its importance in mediating plant–herbivore interactions is limited, particularly in field settings. Similarly, sesquiterpene lactones are a broadly distributed class of putative defensive compounds, but little is known about their activities in the field.

Methods

Natural variation in sesquiterpene lactones of the common cocklebur, Xanthium strumarium (Asteraceae), was used in conjunction with a series of common garden experiments to examine relationships between stereochemical variation, herbivore damage and plant fitness.

Key Results

The stereochemistry of sesquiterpene lactone ring junctions helped to explain variation in plant herbivore resistance. Plants producing cis-fused sesquiterpene lactones experienced significantly higher damage than plants producing trans-fused sesquiterpene lactones. Experiments manipulating herbivore damage above and below ambient levels found that herbivore damage was negatively correlated with plant fitness. This pattern translated into significant fitness differences between chemotypes under ambient levels of herbivore attack, but not when attack was experimentally reduced via pesticide.

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this work represents only the second study to examine sesquiterpene lactones as defensive compounds in the field, the first to document herbivore-mediated natural selection on sesquiterpene lactone variation and the first to investigate the ecological significance of the stereochemistry of the lactone ring junction. The results indicate that subtle differences in stereochemistry may be a major determinant of the protective role of secondary metabolites and thus of plant fitness. As stereochemical variation is widespread in many groups of secondary metabolites, these findings suggest the possibility of dynamic evolutionary histories within the Asteraceae and other plant families showing extensive stereochemical variation.  相似文献

Investigation of the North American species Psilostrophe villosa afforded, in addition to known compounds, five new sesquiterpene lactones, which all turn out to be modified pseudoguaianolides, most of them closely related to hymenolide. However, one of the lactones is a new type of nor-pseudoguaianolide. Furthermore a new monoacetylated borneol-β-D-glucoside is present. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Two allyl hydroperoxy guaianolide sesquiterpene lactones (peroxyeupahakonin-A and -B) and five new guaianolides (eupahakonin-A and -B, eupahakonenin-A and -B, and eupahakonesin) were isolated from E. chinense and characterized. An ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Matricaria Chamomilla L. collected at Oued Tonga near El-Kala is eastern Argelia yielded two new substances named matricolone and chamolol, together with four known compounds. The structure of the new compounds were determined by chemical transformations and NMR spectroscopy with 1H-1H (COSY and ROESY), 1H-13C (one bond and long range correlations) two dimensional experiments. The results obtained indicate the presence of sesquiterpene lactones of the eudesmanolide, germacranolide and guaianolide types. These products can be considered to be of great interest from a chemotaxonomical point of view for this wild-growing plant, because these types of lactones have not been found together in other Matricaria species.  相似文献

Two novel, non-glaucofide, germacrolide sesquiterpene lactones, 8α-methacryloyloxycostunolide-1(10),4(5)-diepoxide and 1-oxo-10α-OH-8α-methacryloyloxycostunolide (not fully characterized), were isolated from Vernonia jonesii and the previously described glaucolide B was identified from V. pooleae. This is one of the few reports of non-glaucolide type germacrolides in a New World species of Vernonia, although members of this class of sesquiterpene lactones are common constituents of Old World species of the genus. The chemical evidence supports the suggestion that V. jonesii may be part of a relictual, isolated group of the New World Vernonia, closely related to some of the Old World taxa.  相似文献

The herbivory activity of the bordered patch larvae (Chlosyne lacinia, Lepidoptera) on leaves of a Brazilian population of Tithonia diversifolia and the antifeedant potential of its leaf rinse extract were investigated. The caterpillars fed only on the adaxial face, where the density of glandular trichomes is very low, and avoided the abaxial face, which contains high levels of trichomes. Deterrent activity against the larvae was observed in leaf discs treated with leaf rinse extract at concentrations of 1-5% of fresh leaf weight. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicated that sesquiterpene lactones are the main constituents of the glandular trichomes. Dichloromethane rinse extracts of the leaves and inflorescences were chemically investigated, and 16 compounds were isolated and identified: 14 sesquiterpene lactones, a flavonoid and a diterpenoid. In this study, five sesquiterpene lactones are described for the first time in the genus, including two lactones, one of which has an unusual seco-guaianolide skeleton. Our findings indicate that the caterpillars avoid the sesquiterpene-lactone-rich glandular trichomes, and provide evidence for the antifeedant activity of the dichloromethane leaf rinse extract. In addition, a study of the seasonal variation of the main constituents from the leaf surface throughout a year demonstrated that a very low qualitative but a very high quantitative variation occurs. The highest level of the main metabolite tagitinin C was observed between September and October and the lowest was from March to June, the later corresponding to the period of highest infestation by the larvae.  相似文献

Analysis of sesquiterpene lactones and essential oils of various Artemisia herba-alba populations growing in Israel revealed the existence of five different chemotypes. These vary in their chemical profile from populations of the Sinai Desert, Egypt, Morocco and Spain. On the basis of the substitution patterns of the sesquiterpene lactones isolated from the Israeli populations which bear a hydroxyl or acetoxy function at C-9 it is suggested that these constitute a chemotaxonomic subspecies in the A. herba-alba complex.  相似文献

Over 20 taxa of the genus Partenium (Compositae) representing four sections or five ecological groupings from throughout the Americas, were examined for sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids and alkaloids. The tropical thorn-forest, arborescent members (sect. Parthenichaeta) were found to contain three different sesquiterpene lactone types and derivatives of the flavonols; quercetin, kaempferol and quercetagetin. The desert shrubs were remarkable for their high production of methylated quercetagetin flavonols and alkaloids, but lacked any appreciable amounts of sesquiterpene lactones. The temperate, submontane perennials (sect. Bolophytum), contained lactones and flavonols in extremely low concentrations. The herbaceous annuals (sect. Argyrochaeta) contained pseudoguaianolides only and together with quercetin, and kaempferol O-glycosides. The herbaceous perennials contained twice as many lactones and flavonoids as the annuals. It is suggested that the ecogeographical distribution of secondary products in Parthenium is probably a result of adaptive responses to various physical and biotic factors (herbivore pressure) in the environment.  相似文献

The investigation of Stokesia laevis afforded in addition to known compounds five new sesquiterpene lactones, four hirsutinolides and one guaianolide. The structures are very similar to those isolated from several Vernonia species. Since hirsutinolides have only been previously isolated from this latter genus, these results suggest that Stokesia may be closely related to Vernonia.  相似文献
