Deformities and fluctuating asymmetry in chironomid larvae have been proposed as sensitive indicators of biological stress and are commonly used to assess the ecological impact of human activities. In particular, they have been associated in Chironomus riparius, the most commonly used species, with heavy metal and pesticide river pollution. In this study, the effect of lead and 4-nonylphenol on mouthpart morphological variation of Chironomus riparius larvae was investigated by traditional and geometric morphometrics. For this purpose, first to fourth instar larvae were exposed to sediment spiked with lead (from 3.0 to 456.9 mg/kg dry weight) or 4-NP (from 0.1 to 198.8 mg/kg dry weight). Mentum phenotypic response to pollutants was assessed by four parameters: (1) the frequency of deformities, (2) fluctuating asymmetry of mentum length, (3) fluctuating asymmetry of mentum shape and (4) the mentum mean shape changes. Despite the bioaccumulation of pollutants in the chironomid’s body, no significant differences between control and stressed groups were found for mouthpart deformities and fluctuating asymmetry of mentum length. Slight effects on mentum shape fluctuating asymmetry were observed for two stressed groups. Significant mean shape changes, consisting of tooth size increase and tooth closing, were detected for lead and 4-NP exposure respectively. Those variations, however, were negligible in comparison to mentum shape changes due to genetic effects. These results suggest that the use of mentum variation as an indicator of toxic stress in Chironomus riparius should be considered cautiously.  相似文献

Deformities in the mouthparts of larval Chironomidae, particularly of the teeth on the mentum, have been proposed as a bioindicator of sediment quality and environmental stress. Most work to date has concentrated on relatively few abundant, responsive genera common in soft-bottom lakes. We examined mentum deformities in 25 genera of Chironominae, Orthocladiinae and Diamesinae (one genus) from streams and a lake in rural Nova Scotia where farming and forestry are the principal land uses. Incidence of deformity at similar stream sites varied across genera from zero to >10%. Average frequencies of deformity across all three subfamilies at sites with no known sources of contamination ranged from <4% to 8%, and increased to nearly 15% at a site receiving treated municipal sewage effluent. Differences in chironomid community structure and rates of leaf litter decomposition above and below the sewage effluent outfall were congruent with the difference in mentum deformities. Frequencies of deformity observed here are an order of magnitude greater than in similar studies of rural areas. Low-level stress from agriculture or forest harvesting may be widespread in rural regions even in aquatic ecosystems that are seemingly free of industrial discharges or sediment contamination.  相似文献

Urbanization and industrialization have placed most of the aquatic environments in developing countries at great risk. The absence of reliable biological monitoring programmes further complicates the situation. In this study, an attempt was made to assess incidence of deformities among Chironomus spp. response to the level of environmental degradation. For this purpose, chironomid larvae were sampled from Sebeta River (November, 2012) using Surber sampler and/or D‐frame dip net. Moreover, physico‐chemical analysis of the water and sediment heavy metal analysis were carried out at three study sites. The results indicate that most physico‐chemical variables were higher at the downstream sites (P < 0.05), together with high levels of Cr, Zn and Cu, which was attributed to untreated effluents that originated from garment and tannery industries. Several forms of deformities (mentum gap, notch, tooth missing and breakage) were encountered, and the majority occurred on mentum followed by pecten epipharynx. Taking 8% as a cut‐off value for normal deformities and the moderate rate of deformities detected (16.62% at Sb‐2), it is possible to conclude that the ecological state of Sebeta River is at critical condition. Therefore, corrective measures like designing of effective treatment plants and timely set environmental impact assessment must be in place prior to any developmental activity.  相似文献

1. Tadpoles of the bullfrog ( Rana catesbeiana ) collected in a coal ash deposition basin (contaminated with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Se and other elements) and a downstream drainage swamp had a reduced number of labial teeth and deformations of labial papillae when compared with tadpoles from reference areas. Tadpoles from the coal ash-affected areas had 90% fewer teeth in anterior tooth row number 2 and 40% fewer teeth in posterior row number 1 than reference animals. In the deposition basins, drainage swamp and reference ponds, respectively, 96.2, 85.1 and 2.9% of tadpoles had oral deformities.
2. Tadpoles with deformities were less able to graze periphyton than were normal tadpoles, when tested in the laboratory. When presented with periphyton as a sole food source, tadpoles with deformed teeth had lower (negative) growth rates than those with normal teeth, which had slightly positive growth rates. When particulate food was also available, tadpoles grew well regardless of deformities.
3. It appears that the morphological deformities associated with this coal ash-polluted environment can have ecological ramifications for the affected organisms by limiting the type of food that can be consumed and the ability to grow when multiple food types are unavailable.  相似文献

Studies of the evolutionary emergence of the human "chin" have been investigated from a phylogenetic perspective during the later Pleistocene or from a biomechanical perspective across extant primates. Since it was during the Middle and Late Pleistocene that the distinctive human mentum osseum emerged, the relationship between mentum osseum form and resistance to mechanical stress at the mandibular symphysis was examined for forty-two Middle and Late Pleistocene human mandibles. Mentum osseum variation was scored on a five-point ordinal scale (mentum osseum rank). Resistance to bending was represented by second moments of area calculated from symphyseal cross-sections. Relative strength in bending was represented by second moments of area divided by estimated moment arm or beam length. Vertical bending resistance in the coronal plane was maintained across the range of mentum osseum variation within and between later Pleistocene human groups. In contrast, resistance to lateral transverse bending (wishboning) was significantly negatively correlated with the emergence of a protruding mentum osseum. However, Neandertals and early modern humans were equivalent in their abilities to resist this bending regime, while both groups were less resistant in wishboning than earlier archaic humans. In addition, symphyseal inclination, which decreased throughout the later Pleistocene, was highly correlated with mentum osseum rank. Although the overall pattern of differential stasis and change in vertical bending and wishboning resistance at the symphysis is consistent with aspects of the current biomechanical model of the "chin," the decoupling of bending resistance and mentum osseum form in the Late Pleistocene suggests that the evolutionary emergence of the modern human "chin" was at least partly independent of the biomechanical demands placed on the symphysis.  相似文献

1. Chironomid larvae and adults were collected from several freshwater habitats around the Chernobyl site from 1990 to 1994 (4–8 years after a nuclear accident) and examined for morphological deformities.
2. Deformities were found in larvae of nine of the 13 species collected, and were most obvious in headcapsule structures, particularly the antennae, mentum, mandibles and epipharyngeal pectens.
3. In species of Chironomus , the most abundant genus, there was a positive linear relationship between the incidence of deformity and radiation level. Indices of severity of deformity showed similar trends. It is suggested that these deformities resulted largely from ingestion of irradiated, plant-derived, fine particulate food.
4. Among adult male Ch. riparius , the deformity index decreased both with increasing time from the accident and with increasing distance from the reactor, although these trends were not statistically significant. There was also a trend of increased severity of deformity closer to the accident, both in time and space.
5. Overall, there was a greater incidence of deformity in the larvae than in the adults (e.g. 60 versus 20%, respectively, at the Krasnoselye site and 33 versus 20%, respectively, at the more distant Dron'ki site).
6. It was not possible to determine whether the deformities were inherited from previous generations or were somatic occurrences in each new generation as a consequence of the radiation that continues to pervade the region.  相似文献

Achieving sustainable freshwater resource management and conserving biodiversity require accurate and reliable pollution impact assessment. Biomonitoring is an integrative and holistic approach to assessing impact of pollution using biological indicators. In this study, we use the assemblage structure of the freshwater macroinvertebrate family Chironomidae to assess the impact of pollution in a South African river: the Swartkops River. Based on morphological deformities in the mentum of selected genera, we developed a new index, the extended toxic score index (ETSI), to assess the extent of deviation of ecological conditions at the impacted sites from that at the control site. Four sites i.e. Sites 1–4 characterised by different degrees of pollution were selected for chironomids and physico-chemical sampling over a period of three years (August 2009–September 2012). The ETSI was developed by taking into account the severity of deformities, and genera tolerances to pollution. The index was based on the deformities in the mentum of the five most dominant genera: Chironomus, Polypedilum, Tanytarsus, Dicrotendipes and Cricotopus. The values of nutrients, electrical conductivity and turbidity were elevated, and dissolved oxygen depleted at Sites 2, 3 and 4 compared with Site 1. Metal concentrations in the water column were relatively low (<0.3 mg/l). Site 1, i.e. the control site, supported more chironomid species (30 species). Site 2, situated upstream of the Kelvin Jones wastewater effluent discharge point, but influenced by diffuse pollution sources, had more species (22 species) than Sites 3 (10 species) and 4 (18 species). The species assemblage structure clustered largely by sites than by seasons, with the assemblage at Site 1 distinct to those at Sites 2, 3 and 4. The newly developed ETSI was sensitive to pollution, distinguishing between the ecological conditions at the sampling sites. The index placed Site 2 in Category D, indicative of poor ecological condition and Sites 3 and 4 in Category E, indicative of very poor conditions. We found the ETSI to be an appropriate and useful deformity-based tool for biomonitoring, and it can easily be modified and used in other river systems, both locally and internationally.  相似文献

The etiology of flexion deformities was studied experimentally on infant and adult cadavers. The experiment was performed on all major joints, which were first filled with liquid under tension and later connected to a manometer. The influence of joint position on the intra-articular pressure was then carefully noted. It was consistently observed that the position of least pressure was always a position of slight flexion. It was therefore concluded that the occurrence of flexion deformities in the presence of effusion is due to maintenance of the position of comfort, since it is in this position that periarticular structures are under least pressure.  相似文献

We report that two species of basidiomycete fungi (Polyporus versicolor and Poria monticola) grow in minimal liquid or solid medium when supplemented with crushed lignite coal. The fungi also grow directly on crushed lignite coal. The growth of both fungi was observed qualitatively as the production and extension of hyphae. No fungal growth occurred in minimal agar medium without coal. The fungi degraded solid lignite coal to a black liquid product which never appeared in cultures unless fungi and coal were present together. Apparently, lignite coal can serve as the principal substrate for the growth of the fungi. Infrared analyses of the liquid products of lignite degradation showed both similarities to and differences from the original lignite.  相似文献

The chin, or mentum osseum, is one of the most distinctive anatomical traits of modern humans. A variety of hypotheses for the adaptive value of the chin have been proposed, ranging from mechanical stress resistance to sexual selection via mate choice. While the sexual selection hypothesis predicts dimorphism in chin shape, most biomechanical hypotheses preclude it. Therefore determining the presence or absence of significant sexual dimorphism in chin shape provides a useful method for differentiating between various adaptive hypotheses; however, this has yet to be done due to a lack of quantitative data on chin shape. The goals of this study are therefore: (1) to introduce a new method for quantifying chin shape and (2) to determine the presence or absence of sexual dimorphism in chin shape in a diverse sample of modern humans. Samples were drawn from recent human skeletal collections representing nine geographic regions. Outlines of mentum osseum contours were quantified using elliptical Fourier function analysis (EFFA). Fourier coefficients were analyzed using principal components analysis (PCA). Sexual dimorphism in chin shape was assessed using PC loadings in the pooled geographic sample, and statistically significant differences were found. These findings provide the first quantitative, morphologically based evidence in support of adaptive hypotheses that predict dimorphism in chin shape, including the sexual selection hypothesis.  相似文献

Synopsis We described skeletal deformities in Willamette River fishes from larval and juvenile specimens collected in 2002 and 2003. Deformities were found in most taxa examined but were more frequent in native broadcast spawners, especially minnows and suckers, than in native or exotic nest builders. Caudal deformities were uniformly distributed throughout the river, but precaudal deformities were more localized near the towns of Newberg and Salem (Wheatland Ferry). In northern pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus oregonensis, deformities were dependent on relative hatch date, with early season fish having about three times the deformity load as late season fish. In a subsample of northern pikeminnow and chiselmouth, Acrocheilus alutaceus, number of deformities was directly related to number of trematode metacercariae and precaudal deformities were twice as likely as caudal deformities to be associated with metacercariae. Based on a logistic regression, the probability of a precaudal deformity was dependent on number of metacercariae and geographic area with the area effect disappearing as the number of cysts increased. A separate analysis showed that some types of deformities were unlikely to be associated with metacercariae. However, even in cases where metacercariae were unlikely to be associated with deformities, metacercariae were usually present elsewhere in the fish and an indirect effect could not be dismissed. The taxonomic, spatial and temporal patterns of skeletal deformities in Willamette River fishes may be due to differences in intermediate host (snail or fish) resistance or susceptibility to parasites, to differences in life history ecology, or to anthropogenic effects that are manifest in increased precaudal deformities near Newberg and Wheatland Ferry or decreased rates elsewhere.  相似文献

Summary Microbial coal solubilization and the extraction of solubilized coal products were carried out in media amended with polyol (Pluronic F-127), an agent which gels above 18°C but reverts to a liquid state at low temperature (4°C). The solubilized coal products, the unsolubilized coal particles and the mycelial mat were separated effectively by centrifugation at 4°C. The amount of coal solubilization was 30–50% higher in polyol-amended media than in agar media regardless of the microorganism. On the other hand, the amount of coal solubilization in polyol-amended control media was less compared to agar-amended control media.  相似文献

A comparative morphological study of the basal sclerites of the bee labium was undertaken. The term postmentum was applied to the basal sclerite of the bee labium. In contrast to recent interpretations, the undivided postmentum was found to be ancestral for bees and homologous with the single postmental sclerite of other Hymenoptera. This sclerite has previously been incorrectly indentified as two separate sclerites, usually termed mentum and lorum (= submentum), for many short-tongued bees (Colletidae, Halictidae, Andrenidae, Melittidae) and for the long-tongued families of bees (Anthophoridae, Fideliidae Megachilidae) excepting most members of the Apidae. The postmentum, divided into a true mentum and lorum, was found only in certain members of the Apidae. A phylogenetic implication resulting from this study shows that the Andrenidae may be the sister group to the MCL-T group (Melittidae, Ctenoplectridae and long-tongued families of bees). In addition, it is proposed that the Euglossinae should be the sister group to the Apinae (Meliponini, Apini and Bombini). This means that eusociality may be considered a synapomorphy for the Apinae.  相似文献

目的:探讨胎儿肢体畸形超声特征及诊断价值。方法:采用连续顺序追踪法对66342 例妊娠12-40 周孕妇行胎儿四肢畸形筛查。将产前超声诊断结果与引产或产后结果进行对比分析。结果:发生肢体畸形271 例,发生率为0.41 %(271/66342),包括四肢短小5 例,桡骨发育不全1 例,缺肢畸形5 例,足内翻17 例,手掌畸形3 例,指趾畸形222 例及骨骼多发畸形18 例。其中产前诊断胎儿肢体畸形49 例;漏诊222 例,包括:足内翻3 例、指趾畸形218 例、多发骨骼畸形1 例。胎儿肢体畸形的出现率和产前检出率分别为:四肢短小1.84 %(5/271)、100 %(5/5);桡骨发育不全0.36 %(1/271)、100 %(1/1);缺肢畸形1.84 %(5/271)、100 %(5/5);足内翻6.27 %(17/271)、82.35 %(14/17);手掌畸形1.10 %(3/271)、100 %(3/3);指趾畸形81.91 %(222/217)、1. 8%(4/222);多发骨骼畸形6.64 %(18/271)、94.44 %(17/18)。结论:超声对胎儿手掌、脚掌部位以上畸形的检出率较高。指趾畸形出现率最高,但检出率最低。  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient, but in higher concentrations can reduce recruitment in fish populations by increasing rates of deformities during early development. Recent work has identified elevated levels of Se in water and biota collected downstream from coal mining activity in Alberta's northeast slopes region. We also recently identified increased incidence of terata and edema in rainbow trout and brook trout with elevated tissue Se from this area. However, there is currently no information regarding the potential for Se to contribute to declining stocks of bull trout, a species of concern in the area. The present study provides an assessment of the potential for Se to contribute to low recruitment in bull trout downstream from coal mining activity. Non-destructive muscle biopsy sampling and a sensitive atomic fluorescence analysis technique are used to determine Se. Results indicate that most bull trout (>90%) captured immediately downstream from coal mining activity in the region have concentrations of Se that would be expected to impair recruitment. Additional work is required to determine the extent of Se's contribution to low recruitment in bull trout.  相似文献

Peroxidases secreted by the white-rot basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium can oxidise a wide range of recalcitrant compounds including lignin and aromatic xenobiotics. Since low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignite retain structural features of the parent lignin, we investigated the possibility that P. chrysosporium is capable of acting on a brown coal, with the production of useful low-molecular-mass compounds. In nitrogen-limiting liquid medium containing 0.03% solubilised Morwell brown coal, P. chrysosporium was found to convert about 85% of the coal after 16 days incubation to a form not recoverable by alkali-washing and acid-precipitation. The modal molecular mass of the residual coal macromolecules was reduced from the initial 65kDa to 32 kDa. Extensive bleaching of the coal coincided with the presence of extracellular lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese-dependent peroxidase (MnP), although both LiP and MnP activity were lower in cultures containing coal. These reductions are accounted for by interference with the enzyme assays by solubilised coal and by binding of MnP to precipitated coal. LiP was about eight times more sensitive than MnP to inhibition by solubilised coal. In nitrogen-sufficient medium containing solubilised coal, neither coal modification nor LiP activity were observed, suggesting that LiP is an essential component of the bleaching process.  相似文献
