In order to investigate whether or not equivalents to modern calcareous plankton existed in Palaeozoic times, extremely well-preserved successions have to be investigated. The Silurian strata on Gotland (Sweden) are exceptionally well preserved because they have not experienced deep burial conditions and tectonic stress, due to their position on the stable Baltic Shield. Scanning electron microscope investigations of polished, slightly etched rock surfaces revealed the presence of a variety of calcareous micro- and nannofossils. Among these organisms, many can be termed 'calcispheres' (60–100 µm in diameter), whereas others due to their size range (nannofossils) are informally termed herein as 'nannospheres' (10–25 µm in diameter). The systematic attribution of these fossils is unknown ( incertae sedis ). Mesozoic calcispheres are usually attributed to calcareous cysts of dinoflagellates following comparisons of ultrastructure with modern species. The abundance of different calcispheres in the Silurian sediments of Gotland and the observation that many of the calcareous microfossils occur in distinctly different facies as well as their spherical shape indicate that they probably belong to calcareous micro- and nannoplankton. We therefore conclude that calcareous plankton most probably existed already during the Palaeozoic, but can only be observed under conditions of exceptional preservation.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that ancient plankton DNA can be recovered from Holocene lacustrine and marine sediments, including from species that do not leave diagnostic microscopic fossils in the sediment record. Therefore, the analysis of this so-called fossil plankton DNA is a promising approach for refining paleoecological and paleoenvironmental information. However, further studies are needed to reveal whether DNA of past plankton is preserved beyond the Holocene. Here, we identified past eukaryotic plankton members based on 18S rRNA gene profiling in eastern Mediterranean Holocene and Pleistocene sapropels S1 (~9 ka), S3 (~80 ka), S4 (~105 ka), and S5 (~125 ka). The majority of preserved ~400- to 500-bp-long 18S rDNA fragments of microalgae that were studied in detail (i.e. from haptophyte algae and dinoflagellates) were found in the youngest sapropel S1, whereas their specific lipid biomarkers (long-chain alkenones and dinosterol) were also abundant in sediments deposited between 80 and 124 ka BP. The late-Pleistocene sediments mainly contained eukaryotic DNA of marine fungi and from terrestrial plants, which could have been introduced via the river Nile at the time of deposition and preserved in pollen grains. A parallel analysis of Branched and Isoprenoid Tetraethers (i.e. BIT index) showed that most of the organic matter in the eastern Mediterranean sediment record was of marine (e.g. pelagic) origin. Therefore, the predominance of terrestrial plant DNA over plankton DNA in older sapropels suggests a preferential degradation of marine plankton DNA.  相似文献

We investigated phylogeography, demography, and population connectivity of the dugong (Dugong dugon) in Australian waters using mitochondrial control region DNA sequences from 177 Australian dugongs and 11 from elsewhere. The dugong is widespread in shallow Indo‐West Pacific waters suitable for growth of its main food, seagrass. We hypothesized that the loss of habitat and creation of a land barrier (the Torres Strait landbridge) during low sea level stands associated with Pleistocene glacial cycles have left a persisting genetic signature in the dugong. The landbridge was most recently flooded about 7,000 yr ago. Individual dugongs are capable of traveling long distances, suggesting an alternative hypothesis that there might now be little genetic differentiation across the dugong's Australian range. We demonstrated that Australian dugongs fall into two distinct maternal lineages and exhibit a phylogeographic pattern reflecting Pleistocene sea‐level fluctuations. Within each lineage, genetic structure exists, albeit at large spatial scales. We suggest that these lineages diverged following the last emergence of the Torres Strait landbridge (ca. 115 kya) and remained geographically separated until after 7 kya when passage through Torres Strait again became possible for marine animals. Evidence for population growth in the widespread lineage, especially after the last glacial maximum, was detected.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distribution patterns of lanternfish larvaealong the southeast coast of Africa were analysed in relationto oceanographic conditions. Investigations werebased on theplankton collections made during winter, spring and summer monthsof 1990–1991. The warm southward-flowing Agulhas Currentis the dominant large-scale oceanographic feature in the area.The number of species of myctophid larvae collected per cruiseranged from 35 to 38. The most abundant species differed fromone season to the other.Afew species showed marked seasonalityin their occurrence, e.g. Scopelopsis multipunclatiis only appearedin winter and Hygophum hygomii showed the highest abundancesin winter. The majority of species occurred in relatively lowconcentrations during all three periods. Relatively large concentrationsof lanternfish larvae of most species sometimes occurred veryclose inshore (especially in the north of thestudy area) inwater depths of 50–100 m. This was related to shorewardintrusions ofAgulhas Current surface water. Low numbers of larvaeof few species appeared on the inshore shelf of the southernsector of the study area, where cold central Indian Ocean wateris forced onto the shelf by kinematic upwelling.  相似文献

Diversity of Pleistocene marine invertebrates with single component, robust, easily identifiable skeletons shows a good correspondence to that of the Recent when compared between similar environments in the same region. Such comparisons are less easily made for multi-element skeletons. In the Antilles there are 24 extant species of echinoids in 0–30  m water depth. Considering all available fossils - complete tests, disarticulated spines, and test fragments and ossicles - the Pleistocene echinoids of the Antillean region have a high similarity with the extant shallow water fauna (c. 63% specific and 72% generic similarity). Many of the extant, shallow water, regular echinoid taxa are known from the Pleistocene, although irregular echinoids are less well represented. These results are comparable with those determined for coeval benthic invertebrates from this and other geographic regions, and indicate a high degree of similarity from a survey which is so far limited to only a few of the islands. Not all Pleistocene units considered herein were deposited in shallow water, but they include autochthonous specimens of taxa whose depth range extends beyond shallow water at the present day or presumed allochthonous specimens derived by downslope transport from shallower water, or both.  相似文献

Over the last seventy years, European hominid fossils and associated archaeological remains have been dated by reference to the classical, fourfold glacial/interglacial subdivision of the Pleistocene. This method seemed relatively straightforward and precise especially as new discoveries were fitted into the schemes, apparently strengthening the correlations and increasing their validity. However, recent studies of deep-sea cores and terrestrial deposits, combined with new developments in relative and absolute dating, have shown that the fourfold schemes are oversimplified. This paper critically reviews some of the dating evidence from sites with hominid remains generally considered as Middle Pleistocene (ca. 700,000–128,000 BP). The hominid and archaeological remains are shown to require independent dating and a cautious approach is adopted towards the use of mammalian faunal remains as chronological indicators. The techniques and results of absolute dating are discussed with reference to present problems and future prospects. At a time of transition from an old framework to new correlations, it is inevitable that some conclusions seem tentative and others rather negative. Nevertheless, the Middle Pleistocene in Europe is more fully understood and better dated than the equivalent period in other parts of the world.  相似文献

We report the first discovery of coralline sponges from Pleistocene reef limestones of Vanuatu. Sponges of the genus Acanthochaetetes were identified from two reef terraces of Middle and Late Pleistocene age. As these sponges document cryptic habitats in modern coral reefs, they may be index fossils of cryptic habitats in the Pleistocene as well, thereby providing clues on growth conditions in fossil reefs. The small size of the discovered specimens may be attributed to the transient nature of their cryptic habitats, either due to reef growth or the occurrence of an unusual event.  相似文献

The concentrations of particulate matter, expressed as dry weight (DW), particulate organic (POM), and inorganic material were measured at regular intervals in Lake Constance between February 1980 and December 1982. Maximum particle concentrations were recorded for the euphotic zone in summer (7 mg l−1), while minima occurred during the early summer and in winter. Annual mean concentrations of DW within the entire water column varied between 0.6 and 0.7 mg l−1. In the euphotic zone nearly 70% of DW is organic material. The inorganic particles originate either from phytoplankton (diatomaceous silicon, biogenic decalcification) or from the tributaries. Although phytoplankton biomass only comprises a relatively small proportion (i.e. 30% at maximum) of organic matter, it is the primary source of POM. Therefore, seasonal variations in phytoplankton control epilimnetic concentrations of POM in Lake Constance. Inorganic material comprises smaller proportions of suspended matter. Seasonal variations are related predominantly to fluctuations in biomass and therefore particulate inorganic matter is suggested to originate mainly from autochthonous sources. At the sampling station concentrations of inorganic particles supported by the main tributary, the Alpenrhein, only occasionally vary concomitantly with runoff.  相似文献

The seasonal fluctuations in the incidence of planktonic organisms and the larval forms of certain crustaceans such as crabs, barnacles and post larvae of prawns in the plankton of the south-west coast of India have been followed for a period of three years from 1963. South-west monsoon period is the least productive period for zooplankton in this area. Brachyuran zoeae, post larvae of prawns and barnacle nauplii occur in the plankton throughout the year with distinct peaks for different groups. The zoeae ofUca annulipes occur in the plankton from September to May with a peak during November–December. The zoeae ofPortunus pelagicus are present in the plankton from September to June and their abundance is in February–March. The post larvae ofMetapenaeus affinis are found in the inshore plankton from November to June with the peak in March. The nauplii ofBalanus amphitrite communis occur in the plankton in all the months of the year, the peak incidence has been during November January. The zoeae ofU. annulipes are found to tolerate better the medium saline conditions. Of the ecological factors, salinity of the ambient water and the availability of planktonic food for the larvae seem to influence the seasonal fluctuations of these crustacean larvae in this locality.  相似文献

In the first part of this paper we present the calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of the Capo Rossello section (Sicily), which suggests that a sedimentary gap exists at the contact between the “Trubi” and the overlying Monte Narbone Formation, close to the top of the proposed Zanclean stratotype. This suggestion is supported by the planktonic foraminiferal results and field observations. In contrast, the transition from the “Trubi” to the Monte Narbone Formation is well exposed, gradational and biostratigraphically continuous in the nearby section of Punta Piccola. A composite of the Capo Rossello and Punta Piccola sections serves as a good biostratigraphic reference for the Pliocene of the Mediterranean.In a second part of this paper, we have attempted to update the Mediterranean Pliocene time framework by integrating all of the available biostratigraphic, biochronologic, chronostratigraphic, paleomagnetic and radiometric data.  相似文献

Elucidating demographic history during the settlement of ecological communities is crucial for properly inferring the mechanisms that shape patterns of species diversity and their persistence through time. Here, we used genomic data and coalescent‐based approaches to elucidate for the first time the demographic dynamics associated with the settlement by endemic reef fish fauna of one of the most remote peripheral islands of the Pacific Ocean, Rapa Nui (Easter Island). We compared the demographic history of nine endemic species in order to explore their demographic responses to Pleistocene climatic fluctuations. We found that species endemic to Rapa Nui share a common demographic history, as signatures of population expansions were retrieved for almost all of the species studied here, and synchronous demographic expansions initiated during the last glacial period were recovered for more than half of the studied species. These results suggest that eustatic fluctuations associated with Milankovitch cycles have played a central role in species demographic histories and in the final stage of the community assembly of many Rapa Nui reef fishes. Specifically, sea level lowstands resulted in the maximum reef habitat extension for Rapa Nui endemic species; we discuss the potential role of seamounts in allowing endemic species to cope with Pleistocene climatic fluctuations, and we highlight the importance of local historical processes over regional ones. Overall, our results shed light on the mechanisms by which endemism arises and is maintained in peripheral reef fish fauna.  相似文献

Aeolian dunes controlled by regional climate have been formed in many coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea during the Quaternary. Generally, they are formed under a landward-blowing wind, and comprise numerous reworked penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains. Along the eastern mid-Adriatic Sea, late Pleistocene aeolian and alluvial sands occur as isolated patches in karstic depressions on several islands and the Pelje?ac Peninsula. At most localities, the sands consist of a mixture of mostly carbonate rock fragments and siliciclastic material. A higher proportion of shallow-marine bioclasts was found only at one locality. The terrestrial material was transported to the coastal area by at least two rivers: paleo-Cetina and paleo-Neretva River, and was subsequently reworked and transported by wind, resulting in aeolian deposition. Sandy units of various thicknesses exhibiting sharp erosional bedding planes and cross-bedding are interpreted as representing aeolian dunes and sand sheets controlled by a complex wind regime. The mineralogical composition at almost all localities indicates near-river flood plains as the main sand source. Although the area was affected by strong winds blowing landward and parallel to the coast, they significantly deviated due to the local topography produced by the tectonically deformed and karstified carbonate basement. In this way, the late Pleistocene aeolian deposits on the mid-Adriatic islands differ from deposits from most Quaternary Mediterranean coastal aeolian belts, as they contain very small quantities of penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains and were deposited by winds blowing in varying directions instead of prevailing landward-blowing winds.  相似文献

Seven Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites recovered during ODP Leg 177 in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were analyzed to study the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil record. Calcareous nannofossil events previously described from intermediate and low latitudes were identified and calibrated with available geomagnetic and stable isotope stratigraphic data. In general, Pleistocene southern high latitude calcareous nannofossil events show synchronicity with those observed from warm and temperate latitudes. The first occurrence (FO) of Emiliania huxleyi and the last occurrence (LO) of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa are observed in marine isotope stages (MIS) 8 and 12, respectively. A reversal in abundance between Gephyrocapsa muellerae and E. huxleyi is observed at MIS 5. MIS 6 is characterized by an increase in G. muellerae and MIS 7 features a dramatic decrease in the proportion of Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica. This latter species began to increase its proportions from MIS 14 to 13. The LO of Reticulofenestra asanoi is observed within subchron C1r.1r and the FO of R. asanoi occurs at the top of C1r.2r. A re-entry of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa can be identified in some cores during subchron C1r.1n. The LO of large morphotypes of Gephyrocapsa is well correlated through the studied area, and occurs during the middle-low part of subchron C1r.2r, synchronous with other oceanic regions. The FO of Calcidiscus macintyrei and FO of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa occur in the studied area close to 1.6 Ma.  相似文献

On a global scale, morphological variability of the extant coccolithophorid Calcidiscus leptoporus (Murray and Blackman, 1898) Loeblich and Tappan was investigated in surface sediments and plankton samples and from an Early Pleistocene time-slice (1.8 Ma to 1.6 Ma). In the bivariate space coccolith diameter versus number of rays in the distal shield, Holocene samples follow a single, unimodal morphocline. Sample means of coccolith size and number of elements group in three clusters, I, II and III, which are of biogeographic significance. Clusters II and III coccoliths (mean coccolith size of 5.0 μm and 20.9 elements, and 6.6 μm and 25.6 elements, respectively) are found in a tropical belt extending from 11 °N to 17 °S with an annual minimum sea-surface temperature above 23.5 °C. Cluster I coccoliths (5.8 μm, 20.7 elements) are found in samples outside that belt. The distribution of coccoliths in the surface sediments is tentatively interpreted to be a result of mixing to a varying degree of at least three different morphotypes (‘small’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘large’), which were identified in the living plankton, and which are separated from each other at 5 μm and 8 μm mean coccolith diameter, respectively. A comparison of the surface sediments with the Early Pleistocene assemblages revealed that between 1.6 Ma and 1.8 Ma two morphoclines A and B existed, the first of which persisted until the Holocene in the form of C. leptoporus, while the second comprises only extinct morphotypes including Calcidiscus macintyrei as one end-member. During the Early Pleistocene morphocline A was more homogeneous and no clusters were evident.Morphocline B shows a clear bimodality with a separation of morphotypes at 9.5 μm. Our observations suggest that morphoclines are subsets within the total stratigraphical range of a single species, and represent the global variability of that species in a particular time interval. Morphotypes, which belong to a morphocline, represent the infra-specific variability of that species within the biogeographic and stratigraphic limits of that species.  相似文献

Nauplii V of the rare crustacean Hansenocaris furcifera Itô, 1989, belonging to the infraclass Facetotecta were recorded in the plankton of Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) for the first time. The larvae were probably transported in summer from the coastal waters off Japan. Scanning electron microscopic observations revealed previously unknown morphological characteristics of these larvae: three pairs of pore fields on the dorsal side of the carapace and the presence of processes covered with thickened setae and located at the base of mandibles.  相似文献

An Early Pleistocene benthic community, discovered inside the Rumena Cave in NW Sicily, Italy, was studied. Analysis of the community led to the recognition of several encrusting species – notably scleractinians, bryozoans, serpuloideans, cirripeds, foraminifera and brachiopods – and borings mostly referable to the ichnogenus Gastrochaenolites. All fossils detected are typical of the present‐day hard‐surface submarine cave biota, at both high taxonomic rank and species level. The biogenic crust, restricted to a few sectors of the cave but locally up to few centimetres thick, largely consist of scleractinians, mainly represented by dendrophylliids. Bryozoans and serpuloideans are also present with Hippaliosina depressa and Spiraserpula massiliensis, locally forming multi‐layered sheets and dense specimen aggregates, respectively. Basing mostly on the composition of the encrusting community and on morphological/morphometric features of some species, it has been hypothesized that at least part of the cave was blind when the crust formed, possibly at relatively shallow depth in a sheltered setting or, more probably, at higher depths, below the fair weather swell zone. Encrustations and borings on the rocky cave ceiling and on occasional speleothems broken surfaces document subsequent phases of cave submersion/colonization separated by emersion/erosion phases. The importance of the Early Pleistocene fossils of the Rumena Cave for the knowledge of submarine cave communities through time and for the understanding of sea‐level variations and the uplift of the area has been remarked.  相似文献
