Rats fed a diet containing β1-4 linked galactooligosaccharides (GOS) (5 g/100 g of diet) absorbed calcium and magnesium more efficiently than those fed the control diet. However, the increment obtained through GOS-feeding was reduced by neomycin sulfate 0.67 g/100 g of diet). Since the decrease in cecal pH in rats fed GOS was suppressed by neomycin-feeding, bacterial action in the digestive tract was considered to be reduced by neomycin-feeding. Our findings suggest that the action of intestinal bacteria is necessary for the effects of GOS.  相似文献

Non digestible dietary carbohydrates have been reported to modify lipaemia and post-prandial glycaemia and insulinaemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a non-digestible gluco-oligosaccharides (GOS) diet on glucose, insulin, triglycerides and free fatty acid blood levels and glucose sensitivity in high fat diet fed mice (a high fat diet composed of 45% fat, 35% carbohydrate and 20% protein). Female C57B16/J mice were divided into two groups fed a high fat diet (HF) for 20 weeks supplemented or not with 1.5 g/kg/day of GOS (HF-GOS). The GOS supplementation did not change body weight nor fat pad mass, nor any of the blood parameters measured (glucose, insulin, leptin, triglycerides, and free fatty acids). However, mice which received the GOS supplemented diet showed an increased glucose utilization after a 1 g/kg load of glucose compared with the mice fed the high fat diet alone. Our results suggest a role for non-digestible GOS in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism.  相似文献

Chicken hepatic histidase activity varies with dietary protein consumption, but the mechanisms responsible for this alteration in activity are unclear. In the present research, the complete coding sequence and deduced amino acid sequence for chicken histidase was determined from clones isolated from a chicken liver cDNA library. The deduced amino acid sequence of chicken histidase has greater than 85% identity with the amino acid sequences of rat, mouse, and human histidase. In a series of four experiments, broiler chicks were allowed free access for 1.5, 3, 6, or 24 h to a low (13 g/100 g diet), basal (22 g/100 g diet) and high (40 g/100 g diet) protein diet. In the final experiment 5, chicks were allowed free access for 24 h to the basal, high protein diet or the basal diet supplemented with three different levels of l-histidine (0.22 g/100 g diet, 0.43 g/100 g diet or 0.86 g/100 g diet). There were no differences in the expression of the mRNA for histidase at 1.5 h, but at 3 h, histidase mRNA expression was significantly (P < .05) greater in chicks fed the high protein diet compared to chicks fed the low protein diet. At 6 and 24 h, histidase mRNA expression was significantly enhanced in chicks fed the high protein diet, and significantly reduced in chicks fed the low protein diet, compared with chicks fed the basal diet. Histidase mRNA expression was not altered by supplementing the basal diet with histidine. The results suggest that previously observed alterations in the activity of histidase, which were correlated to dietary protein intake, are mediated by rapid changes in the mRNA expression of this enzyme, and are not necessarily related to dietary histidine intake.  相似文献

The present study focused on the role of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) against the development of hypercholesterolemia. In the current research, GOS synthesized from lactose solution were fed to hypercholesterolemic female Sprague–Dawley rats. Negative control group (G1) was fed on standard basal diet alone. Positive control group (G5) was fed on inulin (154 mg/250 g body weight), while treatment groups G2, G3 and G4 received 110 mg, 154 mg and 198.4 mg/250 g body weight, respectively, of GOS along with high-fat diet for a period of 60 days. Findings from this study revealed that animals belonging to prebiotic GOS (G2, G3 and G4)-fed group showed significantly decreased serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol as compared to control group (G0). The groups which were fed on different doses of GOS revealed a significant reduction in TC, TG, LDL, and VLDL levels and an increase in HDL level corresponding to the reference group that was fed on inulin, while G1 negative control group revealed increased levels of TC, TG, LDL and VLDL. In contrast to positive control group G5 (154 mg inulin), all doses of GOS lowered serum TC, TG and LDL-C and raised HDL-C; however, G4 (198.4 mg) proved to be more effective. Hence, GOS proved to be supportive in preventing hypercholesterolemia leading cause of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. This study reported a significant reduction of serum TC, TG and LDL-C in female rats for 60 days as compared to control. Conclusively, GOS were found to be worthless against hypercholesterolemia.  相似文献

The effects of oral betamethasone (25 micrograms/kg/d), low calcium (1 g/kg), and low phosphorus (2,5 g/kg) diets on weight gain were investigated in 513 growing chicks. The chicks were divided according to initial weight into a lower weight group (less than 100 g each) and a higher group (more than 100 g each). The increases in weight were recorded after periods of 7, 14 and 21 days. The increases in weight in the older chicks (high weight group) were less than in the younger chicks. There was a greater reduction in rate of growth in chicks fed the low phosphorus diet than in those fed the low calcium diet, particularly in the older birds. Betamethasone administration also reduced the rate of growth but this was not additive to the effect of a low calcium diet. In contrast, the greatest reduction in growth rate was observed in the chicks fed the low phosphorus diet and given betamethasone.  相似文献

Background

Allergic asthma is strongly associated with the exposure to house dust mite (HDM) and is characterized by eosinophilic pulmonary inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Recently, there is an increased interest in using dietary oligosaccharides, also known as prebiotics, as a novel strategy to prevent the development of, or reduce, symptoms of allergy.

Aim

We investigated the preventive capacity of dietary galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) compared to an intra-airway therapeutic treatment with budesonide on the development of HDM-induced allergic asthma in mice.

Methods

BALB/c mice were intranasally sensitized with 1 μg HDM on day 0 followed by daily intranasal challenge with PBS or 10 μg HDM on days 7 to 11. Two weeks prior to the first sensitization and throughout the experiment mice were fed a control diet or a diet containing 1% GOS. Reference mice were oropharyngeally instilled with budesonide (500 μg/kg) on days 7, 9, 11, and 13, while being fed the control diet. On day 14, AHR was measured by nebulizing increasing doses of methacholine into the airways. At the end of the experiment, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lungs were collected.

Results

Sensitization and challenge with HDM resulted in AHR. In contrast to budesonide, dietary intervention with 1% GOS prevented the development of AHR. HDM sensitization and challenge resulted in a significant increase in BALF leukocytes numbers, which was suppressed by budesonide treatment and dietary intervention with 1% GOS. Moreover, HDM sensitization and challenge resulted in significantly enhanced concentrations of IL-6, CCL17, IL-33, CCL5 and IL-13 in lung tissue. Both dietary intervention with 1% GOS or budesonide treatment significantly decreased the HDM-induced increased concentrations of CCL5 and IL-13 in lung tissue, while budesonide also reduced the HDM-enhanced concentrations of IL-6 and CCL17 in lung tissue.

Conclusion

Not only did dietary intervention with 1% GOS during sensitization and challenge prevent the induction of airway eosinophilia and Th2-related cytokine and chemokine concentrations in the lung equally effective as budesonide treatment, it also prevented AHR development in HDM-allergic mice. GOS might be useful for the prevention and/or treatment of symptoms in asthmatic disease.

Pork and pork products are recognised as vehicles of SalmonellaTyphimurium infection in humans. Seaweed-derived polysaccharides (SWE) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) have shown to exhibit antimicrobial, prebiotic and immunomodulatory activity. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of dietary GOS and SWE supplementation on reducing S.Typhimurium numbers and intestinal inflammation in vivo. In total, 30 pigs (n=10/treatment, BW 30.9 kg) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments: (1) basal diet; (2) basal diet+2.5 g GOS/kg diet; (3) basal diet+SWE (containing 180 mg laminarin/kg diet+340 mg fucoidan/kg diet). Following an 11-day dietary adaptation period, pigs were orally challenged with 108colony-forming units/ml S.Typhimurium (day 0). Pigs remained on their diets for a further 17 days and were then sacrificed for sample collection. The SWE supplementation did not affect S.Typhimurium numbers on days 2 and 4 post-challenge but reduced S.Typhimurium numbers in faecal samples collected day 7 post-challenge (−0.80 log gene copy numbers (GCN)/g faeces) and in caecal and colonic digesta (−0.62 and −0.98 log GCN/g digesta, respectively; P<0.05) compared with the control treatment. Lactobacillusnumbers were increased in caecal and colonic digesta after GOS supplementation (+0.70 and +0.35 log GCN/g digesta, respectively; P<0.05). In colonic tissue, both GOS and SWE supplementation resulted in reduced messenger RNA expression levels of interleukin(IL)-6, IL-22, tumour necrosis factor-αand regenerating islet-derived protein 3-γ(P<0.05). It can be concluded that dietary supplementation of SWE reduced faecal and intestinal S.Typhimurium numbers compared with the basal diet, whereas dietary GOS supplementation increased Lactobacillusnumbers in caecal and colonic digesta but did not affect S.Typhimurium numbers. Supplementation of GOS and SWE reduced the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in colonic tissue of pigs after the experimental S. Typhimurium challenge.  相似文献

Feeding rodents a diet rich in evening primrose oil (EPO), which contains 5-10 g gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)/100 g total fatty acids, has been shown to decrease lymphocyte proliferation and natural killer cell activity. However, EPO contains a very high level of linoleic acid which itself can affect lymphocyte functions and it is not clear to what extent the effects of EPO can be attributed to GLA. The current study investigated the effect of two levels of GLA in the rat diet upon immune cell functions; the level of linoleic acid was maintained below 30 g/100 g total fatty acids. Weanling rats were fed on high fat (178 g/kg) diets which contained 4.4 g or 10 g GLA/100 g total fatty acids in place of a proportion of linoleic acid. The total polyunsaturated fatty acid content and the n-6 to n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid ratio of the diet were maintained at 35 g/100 g total fatty acids and 7, respectively. The fatty acid compositions of the serum and of spleen leukocytes were markedly influenced by that of the diet, with an increase in the proportions of GLA and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid when the diets containing GLA were fed; these diets also increased the proportion of arachidonic acid in spleen leukocytes. Spleen lymphocyte proliferation in response to concanavalin A was significantly reduced (by 60%) by feeding the diet containing the higher level of GLA, but not by the diet containing the lower level of GLA. Spleen natural killer cell activity and prostaglandin E (PGE) production by spleen leukocytes were not significantly affected by inclusion of GLA in the diet, although there was a tendency towards decreased natural killer cell activity by cells from rats fed the high GLA diet. Thus, this study shows that dietary GLA is capable of altering the fatty acid composition of cells of the immune system and of exerting some immunomodulatory effects, but that the level of GLA in the diet must exceed 4.4 g/100 g total fatty acids for these effects to become apparent.  相似文献

The effect of partial or total dietary substitution of fishmeal (FM) by vegetal protein sources on growth and feed efficiency was carried out in on-growing gilthead sea bream (mean initial weight 131 g). The Control diet (FM 100) contained FM as the primary protein source, while in Diets FM 25 and FM 0 the FM protein was replaced at 75% and 100%, respectively, by a vegetable protein mixture consisting of wheat gluten, soybean meal, rapeseed meal and crystalline amino acids. Diets FM 25 and FM 0 also contained krill meal at 47 g/kg in order to improve palatability. At the end of the trial (after 158 d), fish survival was above 90%. Final weight and the specific growth rate were statistically lower in fish fed the Control diet (361 g and 0.64%/d), compared with 390–396 g and 0.69–0.70%/d after feeding vegetal diets. No significant differences were found regarding feed intake and feed conversion ratio. The digestibility of protein and amino acids (determined with chromium oxide as indicator) was similar in all diets. The blood parameters were not significantly affected by treatments. The activity of trypsin and pepsin was significantly reduced after feeding Diet FM 0. In the distal intestine, the villi length in fish fed Diet FM 25 was significantly longer and the intestine of the fish fed the FM 100 diet showed a smaller number of goblet cells. In conclusion, a total FM substitution by a vegetal mix supplemented with synthetic amino acids in on-growing sea bream is feasible.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on bone growth in young rats fed a normal or low calcium diet. METHODS: Fifty female Sprague-Dawley rats, 6 weeks of age, were randomized by stratified weight method into five groups with 10 rats in each group: baseline control, 0.5% (normal) or 0.1% (low) calcium diet, and 0.5 or 0.1% calcium diet + vitamin D (25 microg/100 g, food intake). Duration of the experiment was 10 weeks. RESULTS: Vitamin D supplementation stimulated intestinal calcium absorption and increased urinary calcium excretion in rats fed a low or normal calcium diet. Vitamin D supplementation prevented the reduction in periosteal bone gain but enhanced enlargement of the marrow cavity and reduced the maturation-related cancellous bone gain in rats fed a low calcium diet, and increased the maturation-related cancellous and cortical bone gains in rats fed a normal calcium diet. CONCLUSION: This study shows the differential effects of vitamin D supplementation on born growth in young rats fed a normal or low calcium diet.  相似文献

The effects of oleuropein, a phenolic compound in extra virgin olive oil, on protein metabolism were investigated by measuring testicular testosterone and plasma corticosterone levels in rats fed diets with different protein levels. In Experiment 1, rats were fed experimental diets with different protein levels (40, 25 and 10 g/100 g casein) with or without 0.1 g/100 g oleuropein. After 28 days of feeding, the testosterone level in the testis was significantly higher and the plasma corticosterone level was significantly lower in rats fed the 40% casein diet with oleuropein than in those fed the same diet without oleuropein. The urinary noradrenaline level, nitrogen balance and hepatic arginase activity were significantly higher in rats fed the 40% casein diet with oleuropein supplementation than in those fed the 40% casein diet without oleuropein supplementation. In Experiment 2, the effects of oleuropein aglycone (a major phenolic compound in extra virgin olive oil and the absorbed form of oleuropein ingested in the gastrointestinal tracts) on the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland, which regulates testosterone production in the testis, were investigated in anesthetized rats. Plasma LH level increased dose dependently after the administration of oleuropein aglycone (P<.001, r= 0.691). These findings suggest that dietary supplementation with 0.1 g/100 g oleuropein alters the levels of hormones associated with protein anabolism by increasing urinary noradrenaline and testicular testosterone levels and decreasing plasma corticosterone level in rats fed a high-protein diet.  相似文献

Fed‐batch synthesis of galacto‐oligosaccharides (GOS) from lactose with β‐galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae was evaluated experimentally and reaction yield was maximized via optimal control technique. The optimal lactose and enzyme feed flow rate profiles were determined using a model for GOS synthesis previously reported by the authors. Experimentally it was found that fed‐batch synthesis allowed an increase on the maximum total GOS concentration from 115 (batch synthesis) to 218 g L?1 as consequence of the increase in total sugars concentration from 40 to 58% w/w. Such high concentration of total sugars was not attainable in batch operation because of the low solubility of lactose at the reaction temperature (40°C). Simulations predicted a GOS yield of 32.5 g g?1 in fed‐batch synthesis under optimal conditions, while experimentally the same yield as in batch synthesis was obtained (28 g g?1). Besides, an enrichment of total oligosaccharides in GOS with a high polymerization degree (GOS‐5 and GOS‐6) was observed in the fed‐batch synthesis. Experimental profiles for all sugars were similar to the ones predicted by simulation, which supports the use of this methodology for the optimization of GOS synthesis. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Triplicate groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.), of initial mass 5 g, were fed one of three practical type diets for 64 weeks. The three diets differed only in the added oil and were 100% fish oil (FO; diet A), 40% FO/60% vegetable oil blend (VO; diet B) where the VO blend was rapeseed oil, linseed oil and palm oil in the ratio 10/35/15 by weight and 40% FO/60% VO blend (diet C) where the ratio was 24/24/12 by weight. After final sample collection the remaining fish were switched to a 100% FO finishing diet for a further 20 weeks. After 64 weeks fish fed 60% VO diet B had significantly lower live mass and liver mass than fish fed diets A and C although SGR, FCR and length were not different between groups. There were no differences in any of the above parameters after either 14 or 20 weeks on the FO finishing diet. Fatty acid compositions of flesh were correlated to dietary fatty acids although there was selective retention of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3; DHA) regardless of dietary input. Inclusion of dietary VO resulted in significantly reduced flesh levels of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) while 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 were all significantly increased in fish fed the 60% VO diets. Fatty acid compositions of liver showed broadly similar changes, as a result of dietary fatty acid composition, as was seen in flesh. However, the response of flesh and liver to feeding a FO finishing diet was different. In flesh, DHA and EPA values were not restored after 14 or 20 weeks of feeding a FO finishing diet with the values in fish fed the two 60% VO diets being around 70% of the values seen in fish fed FO throughout. Conversely, and despite liver DHA and EPA levels being reduced to only 40% of the value seen in fish fed 100% FO after 64 weeks, the levels of liver DHA and EPA were not significantly different between treatments after feeding the FO finishing diet for 14 weeks. However, a 200 g portion of sea bass flesh, after feeding the experimental diets for 64 weeks followed by a FO diet for 14 weeks, contained 1.22 and 0.95 g of EPA + DHA for fish fed FO or 60% VO, respectively. Therefore, sea bass grown for most of the production cycle using diets containing 60% VO can still contribute a significant quantity of healthy n-3 HUFA to the human consumer.  相似文献

Effects of Quillaja saponaria extract (QSE) and Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) with or without β 1–4 galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) on ruminal fermentation, methane production and N utilization in wether sheep were evaluated. Four wethers fitted with permanent ruminal fistulae were assigned in a 4 × 6 Youden square design experiment and fed a basal diet comprised of concentrate and Italian ryegrass hay (2:3, on a DM basis) at 55 g/kg metabolic body weight. Treatments were: (1) control (no addition of supplement); (2) 14 ml of QSE; (3) 14 ml of YSE; (4) 20 g of GOS; (5) 14 ml QSE + 20 g GOS; (6) 14 ml YSE + 20 GOS per day. Digestibility of NDFom increased (P<0.05) in sheep treated with QSE, QSE + GOS, and YSE + GOS, but was not affected by YSE or GOS. Ruminal fluid pH increased (P<0.05) in sheep administered with YSE compared with other treatments. Ammonia N and total VFA concentrations declined (P<0.001) with administration of QSE and YSE compared with the control. Propionate and acetate molar proportions were not affected, while butyrate molar proportion declined (P<0.001) with QSE alone or in combination with GOS. Digestible energy increased (P<0.05) with all treatments, except YSE. Results suggest that administration of QSE and YSE reduced ruminal ammonia N and total VFA concentration, and numerically decreased methane emissions, without having adverse effects on fiber digestion. In addition, administration of YSE, with or without GOS, numerically reduced protozoal numbers. QSE, YSE and YSE + GOS may have potential as beneficial manipulators of ruminal fermentation.  相似文献

Summary Cell-bound phytase of Pichia anomala was produced in glucose–beef extract medium in shake flasks and in a laboratory fermenter at 25 °C for 24 h at 250 rev/min. In the fermenter the biomass production increased and the fermentation time was reduced from 24 to 16 h. Two-week-old broiler chicks were fed with the biomass-supplemented feed [at 100 g/7.5 kg; 50-phytase units/bird/day]. The overall weight gain in the biomass-fed chicks was higher (90.2%) than that of the control group (77.7%). The biomass incorporation in the feed of broiler chicks also resulted in a better phosphorus retention (29% in the control, and 73.68% in the biomass-fed) in the body, consequently an improved growth. There was a decrease in the excretion of phosphorus in the faeces of the chicks fed with phytase-supplemented diet (188.9 mg/g dry matter) as compared to the chicks fed on unsupplemented broiler finisher ration (509.4 mg/g dry matter). This eliminated the need to supplement phosphorus in their diet and also reduced phosphorus pollution. The feed conversion ratio was also lowered for chicks, which were biomass-fed as compared to the control.  相似文献

Duplicate groups of 60 European seabass (mean weight 2.1 g) were fed for 9 weeks with 7 isonitrogenous (46% crude protein, CP) and isolipidic (12% ether extract) semipurified diets obtained by adding graded levels of L-arginine to a basal diet. By analysis of dose-weight gain relationship, the dietary arginine requirement was found to be 3.9 g/100 g CP (N'6.25). A similar value (3.8 g/100 g CP) was obtained when the 5 h (peak) post-prandial plasma urea response relative to that of fish fed the basal diet were regressed against the dietary arginine level, suggesting the possible use of this parameter to validate the arginine requirement estimated from growth data.  相似文献

Dietary intake of high phosphorus (P) is well-described to increase serum levels of PTH, however, how this increased serum PTH affects the PTH actions in major target tissues, particularly in kidney, remains uncovered. We therefore undertook to clarify this point in intact animals fed the high-P diet by examining various parameters of the PTH actions. Twelve weanling Wistar male rats were assigned randomly into the groups; a control group Ca: P = 1: 1 and a high-P group (Ca: P = 1: 3) fed the standard AIN 76 diet supplemented with P (0.5 and 1.5 g/100 g diet). After 3 week feeding, in the high-P diet group, we observed that serum Ca is lowered without difference in serum P when compared to those in the control group. Excretion of urine cAMP, an index of the renal PTH action, was also decreased with higher excretion of urine P by feeding the high P diet. In agreement with the decreased cAMP excretion, a clear reduction in the PTH/PTHrP receptor gene expression estimated by Northern blotting was observed in the kidney irrespective of increased levels of serum PTH. Thus, the present study indicated that high P dietary intake rather reduces the PTH actions in kidney though the serum PTH is increased.  相似文献

The role of corticosterone in regulating the rate of muscle protein breakdown was evaluated by measuring the urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine (3-Mehis) during the administration of 0.0 (vehicle), 0.8 (physiological dose) and 10 (pharmacological dose) mg of the glucocorticoid/100 g body weight/day to adrenalectomized rats (AdX, AdX 0.8 and AdX 10 respectively). A fourth group of intact rats receiving only vehicle (In) was included as control. Rats were fed on either adequate protein and energy (Co) or low-protein (1-P) diets, for eight consecutive days. No differences were found between AdX and AdX 0.8 groups as compared to the In group in regard to body and liver weights. The AdX 10 group exhibited a significant reduction in body weight and a considerable increase in liver weight; these results were found in rats fed on the Co and 1-P diets, although rats on the 1-P diet showed a proportional decrease in those parameters as compared to the rats fed on the Co diet. Gastrocnemius, tibialis and E.D.L. muscle weights were significantly reduced in AdX 10 group, approximatley at the same extent in the two dietary groups. Soleus muscle weight increased in the AdX 10 group, at the same extent in the two dietary groups, as compared to the In group. Plasma corticosterone levels were significantly greater in the AdX 10 group in both dietary treatments, though restriction of protein in the diet induced a higher plasma hormone level than that of the Co group. Urea-N and creatinine outputs were significantly higher in the AdX 10 group. 3-Mehis excretion underwent an immediate and significant rise in the AdX 10 group, although rats fed on 1-P diet showed a more persistent rise than those fed on the Co diet. No differences were found among the other groups. It is concluded that high plasma corticosterone levels can accelerate muscle protein breakdown and that this action is not seriously affected by the protein content of the diet.  相似文献

In three fully crossed, three-way, two-by-two-by-four experiments, male weanling Long-Evans rats were fed a basal diet supplemented with vanadium (ammonium metavanadate)-at 0 and 1 μg/g, cystine at 3.0 and 8.5 mg/g, and iron (ferric sulfate) at 0 (Expts. 1 and 2) or 5 (Expt. 3), 15, 100, and 500 μg/g. After 6 wk, a relationship between vanadium and iron that was influenced by dietary cystine was found. The interaction among vanadium, iron, and cystine was demonstrated best by the hematocrit and hemoglobin findings, which were similar. In all Expts., hematocrits were depressed in rats fed the two lower levels of iron. In Expts. 2 and 3, vanadium deprivation exacerbated the depression of hematocrits in rats fed 15 μg iron and 3.0 mg cystine/g diet. In Expt. 1, the effect was similar, but less marked. On the other hand, in Expts. 1 and 3 when supplemental cystine was 8.5 mg/g, vanadium deprivation did not exacerbate, but tended to alleviate the depression of hematocrits in rats fed 15 μg iron/g diet. When dietary iron was 15 μg/g in Expt. 2, the exacerbation of the depression of hematocrits by vanadium deprivation was much less in rats fed 8.5 rather than 3.0 mg cystine/g diet. Dietary vanadium had little effect on depressed hematopoiesis in severely iron-deficient rats. The findings indicated that vanadium neither substitutes for iron at some metabolic site, nor stimulates iron absorption; but has a positive influence on the utilization of iron after absorption.  相似文献

The possible correlation between malnutrition and degree of severity of rotavirus-associated infantile diarrhea which appears to occur in human populations was studied using a mouse model. To determine the effects of general malnutrition or altered levels of dietary protein, female mice were fed throughout pregnancy and infection periods with diets diluted with 0, 300, or 600 g glucose/kg, designated as normal nutrient to calorie ratio (N/C) diet, 70% N/C diet, or 40% N/C diet or with diets containing 75, 150, or 300 g casein/kg, as low-, normal-, or high-protein diets. Murine rotavirus was given by gavage to the 2-day-old offspring of these dams, and the extent of infection determined. Marked increases in severity of diarrheal disease were seen in the infants from dams receiving the 40 and 70% N/C diets and the low-protein diet. Severity of infection was seen as increased deaths, reduced weight gain, and increased passage of diarrheic feces. Intestinal viral levels and intestinal diarrhea scores did not vary appreciably. Serum interferon remained below detectable limits throughout the studies, but serum antibody was determined in dams 30 days post-virus exposure. The latter titers were lower in the infected mice from dams fed the 40 and 70% N/C diets, but were essentially the same in all the protein diet groups. Cross-fostering was done using the 40 and 100% N/C diets, wherein mice from dams fed either diet were placed on mothers fed the opposite diet. Increased severity of infection was again seen when the virus was given 2 days after the exchange, although the greatest infection occurred in animals from dams fed 40% N/C diet which were then fostered by other similarly fed dams. The increased host sensitivity to the rotaviral infection appeared to be a result of both pre- and postnatal dietary effects.  相似文献
