The plant growth retardant paclobutrazol was applied by foliar spray to seedlings of Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.) to determine its effects on reproductive activity. It was shown to induce flowering in vegetatively juvenile seedlings and increase reproductive activity in vegetatively adult material. The former case represented a 50% (three year) reduction in generation time for commercial seedlings. Paclobutrazol treatment did not appear to have a negative effect on any aspect of reproductive development, germination of new seed, or early seedling growth, while having a distinct positive effect on reproductive output. This suggests that paclobutrazol may be an effective tool enabling tree breeders to reduce generation time and increase reproductive output in E. globulus. Foliar spraying during autumn was shown to be an effective means and timing of paclobutrazol application, with results evident in the following flowering season. Considerable persistence of paclobutrazol effects was noted in the second season after application. Pot size and growth temperatures also play roles in determining the extent of new reproductive activity each season in E. globulus seedlings.  相似文献

Patterns of resource allocation to growth, current reproduction, and potential future reproduction were quantified in six genetically distinct cultivars ofVaccinium macrocarpon. For all cultivars (genotypes), vegetative size is positively correlated with some measures of current reproduction (fruit and flower number) but negatively correlated with others (seed number per fruit, seed weight per fruit). Vegetative growth in the current year is significantly related to the production of reproductive terminal buds, a measure of the potential for reproduction in the following year. Stems with low levels of current reproduction — lower flower number, fruit number, and seed weight — were more likely to form reproductive terminal buds than stems with higher levels of current reproduction. Individual genotypes differed significantly for vegetative size, fruit number, fruit weight, seed number, and seed weight, as well as for the frequency of fruiting stems and reproductive terminal buds produced. Genotypes were segregated in principal component space, indicating overall differences between them in allocation to the suite of variables measured. These results indicate the possibility of fitness differences among cultivars due to genetically determined allocation strategy, which has implications for fitness differences among genotypes within natural populations.  相似文献

Utricularia australis R. Br. is an aquatic angiosperm species common in natural and irrigation ponds in temperate regions. This species reproduces both sexually and vegetatively, but in southwestern Japan the occurrence of male-sterile populations, in which plants produce no pollen and propagate only vegetatively, has been recorded. We studied the reproductive contribution of seeds in normal pollen-producing populations using isozyme analyses, a pollination experiment under culture and field observations. Although seedlings obtained from controlled mating indicated segregation of isozyme, polymorphism of the isozyme genotype was detected mainly among populations, but rarely within each pond population. This suggested clonal dominance and rarity of seed or seedling survival in natural populations. In the pollination experiment, the mean seed set ratio in cross-pollination between plants of the same isozyme genotype (7.6%) did not differ significantly from self-pollination (7.6%), but was lower than cross-pollination between plants of different genotypes (45.7%). The low ratio in crossing between the same genotype plants was ascribed to the clonality of the parents. In general, these results corresponded with the low ratios in seed setting observed in natural populations (7.9–13.7%). All the male-sterile populations we surveyed showed the same genotype, thus male sterility in the study area was considered to have the same origin.  相似文献

The balance between sexual and vegetative reproduction inSyneilesis palmata was examined in relation to environmental conditions and the amount of reproductive resources, which is defined here as the total quantity of dry matter invested in both modes of reproduction. The allocation balance was measured for individual plants of two populations, with different densities in an open habitat, for 2 years, and those of two other populations, under different light intensities in a plantation forest (forest floor and edge), for 3 years. Relative allocation to sexual reproduction decreased with increasing reproductive resources in all populations except for the forest edge, which showed a constant allocation balance. The high density population showed lower relative allocation to sexual reproduction than the low density population, irrespective of the amount of reproductive resources. However the between-year comparison of the high density population suggested that under extremely high density, plants with a small amount of reproductive resources enhanced sexual reproduction, while plants with a large amount of reproductive resources reproduced vegetatively. On the forest floor, plants with small amounts of reproductive resources had higher relative allocation to sexual reproduction than the forest edge population, while plants with large amounts of reproductive resources had a somewhat lower one. The adaptive significance of such allocation patterns are discussed, based on qualitative data on the characteristics of both types of offspring.  相似文献

Despite the great economic importance of citrus, its phylogeny and taxonomy remain a matter of controversy. Moreover pathogens of increased virulence and dramatic environmental changes are currently spreading or emerging. The objectives of the present paper, measuring genetic variability and studying its pattern of distribution, are crucial steps to optimize sampling strategies in the search of genotypes that tolerate or resist these threatening factors within the huge array of Citrus and Citrus related species. Their intraspecific and intrageneric variability was studied comparatively by means of ten enzymatic systems using eight different measures. The analysis of ten enzymatic systems allowed us to distinguish all the species and all but one artificial hybrid. The species with the lowest genotypic variability are C. myrtifolia, C. deliciosa (willow leaf mandarin), C. paradisi (grapefruit), C. limon (lemon) and C. sinensis (sweet orange), while Severinia buxifolia shows the highest value. A broad spectrum of heterozygosity values was found in the collection. Lemons (C. limon, C. meyeri, C. karna, C. volkameriana), limes (C. aurantifolia, C. limettioides, C. lattifolia) and C. bergamia show a very high percentage of heterozygosity which indicates an origin through interspecific hybridization. Two main factors limit genetic intraspecific variability: apomictic reproduction, where nucellar embryos are much more vigorous than the zygotic ones, and nurserymen selecting against variability in the seedling stage of the rootstocks or in propagating the scion cultivars vegetatively. Additionally, self-pollination appears in some species mainly used as rootstocks which would explain their low heterozygosity values. Genetic differences between species and genera are in general high, which suggests that adaptation might have played an important role during the evolution of the orange subfamily.  相似文献

猪毛蒿(Artemisia scoparia)为菊科蒿属草本植物,是一种适应性较强的广幅种。研究荒漠草原不同土壤相对湿度条件下猪毛蒿的表型可塑性,对认识异质生境下猪毛蒿的生存适应策略具有重要的生态学意义。结果表明:株高、茎粗、根长、根重和单株生物量均表现出随土壤相对湿度的增大而增加的趋势,对异质生境具有较强的可塑性,而根冠比则表现出相对的稳定性。植株不同部位生物量大小排序为:上部中部下部,且植株下部显著大于上部生物量(P0.05)。土壤相对湿度40%生境下的头状花序数量和重量显著高于土壤相对湿度30%和30%—40%生境。繁殖器官绝对投入量(lg R)随着个体大小(lg V)的增大呈极显著的增加(P0.001),繁殖阈值介于1.868—2.006 g。随着土壤相对湿度的增加,繁殖分配比例极显著增大(P0.001)。营养器官和繁殖器官生物量、头状花序重量和数量、地下生物量和地上生物量均呈极显著线性正相关关系(P0.001),存在正向权衡。单个头状花序重量并不随个体大小和头状花序数量的增加而发生显著变化(P0.05),且在不同土壤相对湿度和不同部位间均无显著差异(P0.05)。由此可见,猪毛蒿在异质生境下产生的可塑性是其生存繁殖的重要反应机制之一。  相似文献

Summary Seed mass and genotypic effects on the growth and reproduction of Oenothera biennis L. over a gradient of intraspecific density were examined in a greenhouse experiment. By using genetically identical seeds from five parental genotypes we were able to examine independently the effects of seed mass and genotype on seedling and adult performance. Seedling size was significantly correlated with seed mass for the first five weeks but had no effect on adult size or reproductive output. In contrast, genotype differences became increasingly apparent with time. In particular, there were striking differences in reproductive output among genotypes. Plants grown from two of the genotypes consistently produced more, but lighter, seeds and a greater proportion flowered at high density than the other three genotypes. In all five genotypes, seed number was much more variable than seed mass across the density gradient. Initial seed mass accounted for a significant proportion of the variation in progeny seed mass, and mean seed mass produced in the greenhouse was positively correlated with mean seed mass of the parent (in the field). This result, together with the observed constancy of seed mass within a genotype across the density gradient, indicates the differences in reproductive output among these genotypes are genetically determined.  相似文献

Nutrient use-efficiency (NUE) is commonly measured in relation to vegetative growth without regard for economic productivity of crops whose valued product is reproductive. Although vegetative measures can be useful, particularly in forage crops, their validity in the quantification of NUE in grain crops is questionable. This study was undertaken primarily to examine the relationship between vegetative and economic potassium use-efficiency (KUE) in several wheat (T. aestivum) genotypes under conditions of potassium stress. Genotype environment interaction for vegetative KUE was also examined. Vegetative KUE was assessed as shoot fresh weight, efficiency ratio (VKER) and utilization index (VKUI) whereas economic KUE was evaluated as grain weight, total weight and economic efficiency ratio (EKER). Significant genotype-environment interactions for shoot weight, VKER and VKUI were observed. In some instances interaction was associated with crossovers between genotypes indicating that it can affect selection. Correlations between vegetative and economic measures of KUE were generally nonsignificant, but negative and significant for shoot weight of three-week-old plants and grain weight. It appears that if genotypes differ considerably for harvest index and it is not positively correlated with total biomass, vegetative measures of KUE are unreliable as indicators of economic KUE. In a medium-sized population ofArnica montana, a threatened species in The Netherlands, the breeding system, reproductive success and genetic clonal structure were studied. Pollination experiments suggested thatA. montana is largely self-incompatible. Inbreeding depression was observed for seedling weight but not for fruit weight and germination rate. Although genetic variation is rather low in this population, the data suggest an outcrossing mating system. Analysis of the genotype of all mapped rosettes in a plot of 100 m2 indicated that dense clusters often consist of identical genotypes, suggesting a clonal structure. Open clusters frequently contained several different genotypes. This may be caused by limited fruit dispersal, since seedlings were found mainly within or in the near surroundings of the clusters.  相似文献

A field study was carried out to unravel the inter-specific differences in cotton for the partitioning of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na and Cl from the subtending leaves to the reproductive parts of Gossypium hirsutum, G. barbadense and G. arboreum at various developmental stages. Results revealed significant differences among the species for the various parameters studied. Overall there was a greater fresh and dry matter yield of various reproductive parts and subtending leaves of G. hirsutum and G. barbadense than G. arboreum, although the leaf photosynthetic rate was similar. Age-dependent increase in leaf area/leaf mass ratio indicated a greater partitioning of earlier acquired assimilates to the growth of reproductive parts. Results indicated greater partitioning of N, P, S and Ca during later reproductive growth (from boll production to its opening) in G. hirsutum and G. barbadense but during earlier reproductive growth in G. arboreum (from bud up to flower formation) as was evident by decreased subtending leaf/reproductive parts ratio. It is concluded that better N, P, S and Ca partitioning ability of G. hirsutum and G. barbadense at the onset of boll development played a major role in the better yield and good quality fiber characteristics. Summary Unlike tuberosum, andigena potato germ plasm exhibits a high degree of genetic variation in morphological, biochemical and reproductive traits. Sixty-five percent of the 565 genotypes comprising 145 accessions of Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena obtained from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Peru remain totally vegetative and never develop any floral bud when cultivated in northern India. In 18% of genotypes, the floral buds develop but they drop off from the plants prematurely. Thus, 83% of genotypes do not develop mature flowers. The frequency of such genotypes is maximum in the Bolivian genotypes. Whereas 17% of genotypes produce mature flowers, only 2% develop berries. The highest proportion of floral bud formation and their subsequent development and differentiation into mature flowers occur in Peruvian and Colombian genotypes. Partial to high male sterility occurs in 93% of the flowering genotypes; their pollen sterility ranges from 15% to 91%. Seven percent of the flowering genotypes are completely pollen sterile. The male sterility is expressed variously, ranging from structural to sporogenous types. The floral bud formation, its development and retention to maturity, pollen and ovule functionability and fruit development are under the control of a large number of genes, most of which are unlinked and independent. Fibers of three cotton cultivars (Gossypium hirsutum L.) H-4, H-8 and (G. arboreum) G. Cot-15, which shows variation in staple length were analyzed for growth in terms of fiber length and fresh and dry mass. From the growth analysis cotton fiber development is divided in four distinct phases i.e. (i) initiation (ii) elongation (iii) secondary thickening and (iv) maturation. Rate of fiber elongation and rate of water content shows close parallelism. Highly esterified and less esterified pectic fraction along with high and low molecular weight xyloglucan fractions were estimated from fiber walls of all the three cotton genotypes. Xyloglucans were fractioned in to high and low molecular weight by alkali treatment, 1 M and 4 M KOH respectively. Xyloglucan content shows inverse correlation with fiber elongation. Role of water content and wall components in determination of staple length in cotton genotypes is discussed.  相似文献

Low capsule and seed set is a major factor limiting seed production in Eucalyptus globulus seed orchards. Controlled pollination studies showed that the reproductive success (number of seeds produced per flower pollinated) was primarily determined by the female. We aimed to identify the factors contributing to the differences in reproductive success between female genotypes in terms of the physical and anatomical properties of the flower. We studied pairs of genotypes of high and low reproductive success from each of three races (Furneaux Group, Strzelecki Ranges and Western Otways) growing in a seed orchard. Controlled pollinations were performed on six females and along with flower physical measurements, pollen tube growth and seed set were assessed. Overall tree reproductive success was positively correlated with flower size, ovule numbers, style size, cross-sectional area of conductive tissue within the style (all of which were inter-correlated) and the proportion of pollen tubes reaching the bottom of the style. Significant positive correlations of reproductive success and flower physical properties between different ramets of the same genotypes across seasons suggests a genetic basis to the variation observed. The majority of pollen tube attrition occurred within the first millimetre of the cut style and appeared to be associated with differences in style physiology. When examined as pairs within races the difference in reproductive success for the Western Otways pair was simply explained by differences in flower size and the number of ovules per flower. Physical features did not differ significantly for the Strzelecki Ranges pair, but the proportion of pollen tubes reaching the bottom of the style was lower in the less reproductively successful genotype, suggesting an endogenous physiological constraint to pollen tube growth. The difference in reproductive success between the females from the Furneaux Group was associated with a combination of these factors.  相似文献

CrossingMicroseris pygmaea (10 pappus parts) withM. bigelovii (5 pappus parts) results in hybrids with variable pappus part numbers between 5 and 10. Previous work has shown that a system of four additively acting genes determines the average pappus part numbers of these hybrids. In hybrid B87 two genes have a 10-determining and a 5-determining allele each, two others a 5-determining and a null (inactive or missing) allele. Genetic linkage of one of the latter with the enzyme geneEsterase-1 and the leaf shape genespatulate leaves has been demonstrated. Here we demonstrate linkage between one of the two 10-determining genes and the enzyme locusEsterase- Y/B. The genotypes in the pappus part system of many specimens can now be fully determined. Recent collections of fertile garlic (Allium sativum) accessions from Central Asia allow a detailed study of seedling developments and the evaluation of inherent variations. We hereby provide a comprehensive account of the ontogenesis of a population of garlic seedlings and their vegetative and reproductive traits. A nucleotide binding site profiling marker technology was applied to provide conclusive evidence for the cross-pollination nature of garlic, and to compare the levels of polymorphism between progeny derived from a single mother clone fertilized by several pollinators. The seedlings’ population demonstrates a large variation in vegetative and reproductive characters, including bulbing ability, bulb color and size, clove number, and response to environmental conditions, similar to that of the genepool of vegetatively propagated garlic clones. In addition, a large variation in flowering and seed production ability was recorded. The understanding of garlic physiology, the availability of the large variability unleashed by sexual reproduction, and the possible utilization of sexual hybridization opens the way for genetic studies and breeding work. Somatic mutations are an underappreciated source of genetic variation within multi-cellular organisms. The resulting genetic mosaicism should be particularly abundant in large clones of vegetatively propagating angiosperms. Little is known on the abundance and ecological correlates of genetic mosaicism in field populations, despite its potential evolutionary significance. Because sexual reproduction restores genetic homogeneity, we predicted that in facultatively clonally reproducing organisms, the prevalence of genetic mosaicism increases with increasing clonality. This was tested among 33 coastal locations colonized by the ecologically important marine angiosperm Zostera marina, ranging from Portugal to Finland. Genetic mosaics were detectable as complex microsatellite genotypes at two hypervariable loci that revealed additional mosaic alleles, suggesting the presence of one or more divergent cell lineages within the same ramet. The proportions of non-mosaic genotypes in a population sharply decreased below a clonal richness of 0.2. Accordingly, more genetic mosaics were found at the southern and northern limit of the distribution of Z. marina in Europe where sexual reproduction is rare or absent. The genetic mosaics observed at neutral microsatellite markers suggest the possibility of within-clone variation at selectively relevant loci and supports the notion that members of clones are seldom genetically identical.  相似文献

Tolerance as a mechanism of resistance to the melon thrips, Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in common beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., was evaluated under field and greenhouse conditions. Seven resistant (Brunca, BH‐5, BH‐60, BH‐130, BH‐144, EMP 486, and FEB 115) and five susceptible (PVA 773, EMP 514, BAT 477, APN 18, and RAZ 136) bean genotypes were assessed according to adult and larval populations, visual damage and reproductive adaptation scores, and yield components in field trials. From these genotypes, four resistant (Brunca, BH‐130, EMP 486, and FEB 115) and two susceptible (APN 18 and RAZ 136) genotypes were selected for quantification of proportional plant weight and height increase changes due to thrips infestation in greenhouse tests. Under medium to high thrips infestation in the field, most resistant genotypes tended to have higher reproductive adaptation and lower yield losses, though they did not always suffer less damage, as compared to susceptible genotypes. In the greenhouse, resistant genotypes showed less reduction in plant dry weight and height increase than did some susceptible ones under the same infestation pressure. Results from both field trials and greenhouse tests suggest the possible expression of tolerance as a mechanism of resistance to T. palmi in the resistant genotype EMP 486, and confirm the existence of antixenosis in FEB 115, whereas tolerance might be combined with other resistance mechanisms in Brunca.  相似文献

Summary This experiment investigated the effect of parental nutrient shortage on the allocation of five nutrients to seeds and rhizomes in Sorghum halepense, a perennial, noxious weed, and to seeds in Sorghum bicolor, an annual, cultivated species. Plants from both species were grown from seeds and supplied with fertilizer at three concentrations. The allocation of biomass and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) to reproductive and vegetative parts was determined. Relative biomass allocation to reproduction (either sexual or vegetative) remained constant in S. halepense in spite of large differences in total plant weight. In S. bicolor, however, biomass allocation to sexual reproductive structures decreased significantly with decreasing nutrient supply. Individual seed weight was not modified by parental nutrient supply in S. halepense, but it increased with decreasing nutrient availability in S. bicolor. Important differences in mineral allocation to seeds were found between the two species. While S. bicolor seeds were largely buffered from the differences in parental nutrient status, concentration of nutrients in S. halepense seeds decreased significantly with decreasing supply for all the nutrients analyzed except Ca. However, mineral nutrient concentration in S. halepense rhizomes remained remarkably constant despite differences in the external supply, evincing the priority given to vegetative reproduction at the expense of sexual reproduction. Overall, the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. bicolor seeds under different nutrient supply resembled the pattern observed in S. halepense rhizomes, but it had little resemblance to the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. halepense seeds. The results are discussed in terms of differences and similarities in the reproductive strategy of these two species.  相似文献

The pin1-1 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana has been pivotal for studies on auxin transport and on the role of auxin in plant development. It was reported previously that when whole shoots were analysed, levels of the major auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) were dramatically reduced in the mutant, compared with the WT (Okada et al. 1991). The cloning of PIN1, however, provided evidence that this gene encodes a facilitator of auxin efflux, raising the question of how the pin1-1 mutation might reduce overall IAA levels as well as IAA transport. We therefore re-examined IAA levels in individual parts of pin1-1 and WT plants, focusing on inflorescence stems. Our data show that there is in fact no systemic IAA deficiency in the mutant. The previously reported difference between mutant and WT may have been due to the inclusion of reproductive structures in the WT harvest: we show here that the inflorescence itself contains high levels of IAA. We reconcile the normal IAA levels of pin1-1 inflorescence stems with their (previously-reported) reduced ability to transport IAA by presenting evidence that the auxin in mutant stems is not imported from their apical portion. Our data also indicate that levels of another auxin, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), are very low in stems of the genotypes used in this study.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation on growth and nutrient uptake of vegetatively propagated cocoa plants from the Sabah hybrid (NA 33 × PA 7) raised on unsterilized Munchong soils. Inoculation with mixed species of Scutellospora and Glomus, resulted in higher dry matter yield and stem diameter of mycorrhizal plants obtained through budding, air layering or marcotting (a form of asexual plant propagation using vegetative parts and the selection of a healthy branch and scraping off the bark at the lower end of the branch, forcing it to root by covering it with a ball of soil) and stem cutting. Budded and marcotted mycorrhizal plants gave a significant increase in P content of shoots. In contrast, only budded mycorrhizal plants (on both young and old rootstocks) gave a significantly higher Ca concentration in tops, compared to uninoculated plants.  相似文献
