Food search behaviour in cod, Gadus morhua, was studied by means of a stationary positioning system. Six fish in a fjord in northern Norway were tagged in situ by allowing them to shallow bait-wrapped acoustic tags, and their swimming behaviour was continuously recorded. The fish exhibited a diel activity rhythm, with higher swimming speeds and a larger range during the day than at night. Chemically mediated food search was studied in periods of both high and low activity by setting a string of baits in the morning and at night. During the period of high activity, more fish localized the baits (70 versus 45% of the observations) and the time to localization was 50% shorter, indicating that high swimming activity increased the probability of encountering the odour plume and the odour source. No diel variations in the response threshold to olfactory stimuli were found, as the proportion of fish in the odour plume that responded rheotactically, and their response distances were similar in the two periods (240 and 227 m respectively). Cod performed area-restricted searches on encountering the string of baits during the day. The probability of cod detecting prey by taste receptors, encountering the odour plume of prey or localizing a stationary food source after olfactory stimulation should be relatively independent of light, and this could explain why cod were active throughout the 24 h cycle. On the other hand, the visual detection distance and the ability to capture active prey are influenced by the light level, resulting in higher activity during the day.  相似文献

Twelve juvenile pink shrimp, Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad, were tested individually for 3-day periods in electronic shuttleboxes to determine their diel patterns of locomotor activity, in relation to a natural summer photoperiod. Nocturnal activity was twice that exhibited during the daytime; however, a bimodal pattern was evident with crepuscular peaks occurring at dawn and dusk. The dusk peak was more pronounced, with activity increasing markedly before sunset (indicative of an endogenous circadian rhythm component), and continuing during the initial hours of darkness, gradually declining later during the night with a secondary peak at dawn falling off to minimal activity during daylight. Crepuscular activity (mean of dawn and dusk) was twice the nocturnal average.  相似文献

The diel activity rhythm of red-spotted grouper Epinephelus akaara was studied both in captivity and in the wild. Behavior of solitary grouper (58 to 397?mm in total length) in a tank was video recorded using infrared illuminators under 11L/10D and two 1.5-h twilight transition periods, and was compared to that of banded wrasse Halichoeres poecilopterus, a typical diurnal fish. Underwater observations using SCUBA were also conducted in their natural habitat to reveal the behavioral activity together with a visual census of adjacent fish and crustacean assemblages. Red-spotted grouper showed a strong nocturnal activity in a tank regardless of body size as opposed to the strongly diurnal banded wrasse. Activity of groupers in natural waters was high at dawn and dusk, low at noon, and only a few individuals were observed at night. Visual census in the habitat revealed that fish abundance and species richness was highest at noon, lowest at night, and intermediate at dawn and dusk. The opposite trend was found in crustacean assemblages. Absence of groupers at night may reflect their nocturnal feeding migration away from the study area. Alternatively, the crepuscular activity of groupers in the wild is suggested to be an adaptation to feed on small fishes that shift between daytime activity and nighttime rest and/or on nocturnal crustaceans that show the opposite activity pattern.  相似文献

The temporal co-ordination of ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) activities by Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. in C(3) and crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) modes was investigated under conventional light-dark (LD) and continuous light (LL) conditions. When C(3) , net CO(2) assimilation rate increased during each subjective night under LL with maximum carboxylation unrelated to Rubisco activation state. The CAM circadian rhythm of CO(2) uptake was more pronounced, with CO(2) assimilation rate maximal towards the end of each subjective night. In vivo and in vitro techniques were integrated to map carboxylase enzyme regulation to the framework provided by CAM LL gas exchange activity. Rubisco was activated in vitro throughout each subjective dark period and consistently deactivated at each subjective dawn, similar to that observed at true dawn in constitutive CAM species. Instantaneous carbon isotope discrimination showed in vivo carboxylase co-dominance during the CAM subjective night, initially by Rubisco and latterly C(4) (PEPc), despite both enzymes seemingly activated in vitro. The circadian rhythm in titratable acidity accumulation was progressively damped over successive subjective nights, but maintenance of PEPc carboxylation capacity ensures that CAM plants do not become progressively more 'C(3) -like' with time under LL.  相似文献

Diel locomotor activity of brook charr, as determined by radiotelemetry   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Locations by radiotelemetry during eight 24–h sampling periods in 1991, 1992, and 1993 were used to evaluate the diel activity patterns of adult brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis in two lakes of the Laurentian Shield (Québec, Canada). Based on the minimum distance travelled between two consecutive locations, adult brook charr were more active at dusk and at night than during the day. During daylight periods, individual fish displayed strong site selection, remaining in the same area along the shore from day to day. The fish left their inshore position at dusk, were highly mobile during the night, and returned to their focal point at sunrise, exhibiting diel homing behaviour. These results are supported by an increase in gillnet captures of adult brook charr in Lac Melchior at night. Data obtained by gillnet fishing in lakes Bondi and Simpson showed that juvenile (1+) brook charr were active throughout the diel cycle and that young-of-the-year were active mainly during the day, suggesting that there is an ontogenetic change in the diel activity of brook charr. Despite its limitations (restrictions on the number and size of tracked individuals, post-manipulation mortality, lifetime of transmitter battery), radiotelemetry allows for collection of multiple behavioural observations (distances travelled, instantaneous activity, site selection and homing) during the activity cycle of individual fish, and thus provides a finer degree of spatial resolution than alternative methods such as gillnetting.  相似文献

It is known that contemporary space station revolves at the altitude of 400-500 km in the outer space. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of simulated space rhythm (L:D = 0.75 h:0.75 h) at this altitude on circadian rhythm in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri chinensis) and the effects of endogenous sleep inducing neuropeptide Asp5-alpha-DSIP on the space-rhythm-entrained circadian rhythm. This primitive stock serves as one species of Tupaiidae and is a unique native of South China. Our previous studies have shown that this species showed striking differences in natural circadian rhythm between day and night (e.g. 3.03 degrees C of rectal temperature). Results showed that the above mentioned space rhythm (L:D = 0.75h:0.75h) could drastically disturb the inherent circadian rhythm of Tupaia belangeri chinensis. The maximal peak of motor activity dropped significantly in the morning (0600-1200) and a new enhanced peak (more than 20 times greater than that of the control) was found between 1800-2400, whereas the maximal trough of motor activity (2400-0600) remained basically unchanged. Concurrently, the total amount of 24-h motor activity was significantly decreased and the recovery after the cessation of space rhythm was slow. Experimental results also demonstrated that consecutive administration of Asp5-alpha-DSIP (30 micrograms/kg, i.p.) for 5 days (2 days before and 3 days during space rhythm) did not prevent the basic disturbance of circadian rhythm of Tupaia belangeri chinensis caused by the space rhythm (L:D = 0.75h:0.75h). Nevertheless, no decrease or even some enhancement of the total amount of 24th motor activity was observed during space rhythm or after its cessation.  相似文献

Spatial behaviour and distribution of fishes along a 7.6-km lowland reach of the River Trent, England, were examined using two complementary telemetry techniques: acoustic tracking to assess the movement and activity of common bream Abramis brama (L.) and quantitative echosounding for measuring the density and distribution of fish shoals. Nine adult bream (39.3–53.2 cm) were tracked by means of intraperitoneally implanted acoustic transmitters from 19 July to 12 September 2000. Home range size varied between 0.35 and 5.40 km of river length over this period. Bream were relatively inactive during daylight hours, began moving near dusk, and tended to move throughout the night. A distinct daytime residence area was occupied by most tagged fish on most occasions, while river use at night was more variable between individuals. Mobile echosounding surveys, with the transducer beaming horizontally across the river, conducted at night between July and September 2000, showed a highly contagious fish distribution within the study reach. For 200-m sections of river, there was a negative correlation between the relative frequency of acoustic tracking fixes at night and mean fish densities, as measured by echosounding for targets larger than –50 dB (c. 5-cm long). However, there was a highly significant positive rank correlation between the relative frequency of acoustic tracking fixes and acoustic targets larger than –30 dB (c. 22-cm long), most of which in this river are bream. This suggests that telemetry and echosounding can, in this part of the River Trent, be combined to provide valuable spatial information at individual and population scales for bream.  相似文献

Six saithe, length 35 to 43 cm, were tagged with acoustic transmitters and individuals tracked for between 9 and 508 h during May 1989. The tagged fish were members of a schooling group and during the study, pairs of tagged fish were tracked simultaneously for periods ranging from 9 to 139 h. These data have been used to investigate the spatial relationships between individuals schooling in the wild. Distances between individuals showed a distinct diel pattern. Tagged fish were generally closer together during the day, than either at night or the periods of dawn and dusk. Those circumstances under which pairs of tagged fish could be shown to school together were investigated by analysing the differences in their swimming directions. Schooling was generally evident during the hours of daylight, although the degree to which fish schooled varied between pairs. The degree to which the fish schooled was also dependent upon distance between the tagged individuals. Schooling could be demonstrated for saithe within 20 m of each other during the day and within 10 m in two out of three pairs at night.  相似文献

Waterbuck activity was recorded at four-minute intervals for continuous periods of 12 hours on two or three consecutive days, and for single nocturnal periods. Feeding patterns of the male and female were similar and during the day there was no hour during which some feeding did not take place. Only male activity was recorded at night. This showed more intensive feeding but with periods of no feeding just after dark and just before dawn. The use of a four-minute recording interval was found to work well in practice.  相似文献

Summary During 1976 to 1978 in the Bavarian Alps (Southern West Germany) the activity patterns of nine female red deer have been studied using radio-telemetry. The daily sum total of activity shows a marked annual cycle, ranging from about 7 h in winter to some 15 h in summer. It becomes obvious that the duration of activity during solar day, night and twilight is not only due to the length of these three periods but also varies independently in the course of the year. The daily pattern of activity reveals a bimodal 24-h rhythm throughout the year. Its two peaks coincide with dawn and dusk. Their temporal position shifts according to the seasonally changing LD-ratio. Also the relative height of the two peaks varies in the course of the year; they decrease in the summer months in favour of more activity during the light time. These daily and annual rhythms rely on corresponding changes in the pattern of activity bursts. In some cases the sequences of activity bursts reflect also influences of weather conditions or of differently structured habitats on the animals' behaviour. The possible influences of some endogenous and exogenous factors on the activity patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The possible endogenous circadian rhythm in the feeding activity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was investigated using individual fish previously trained for self‐feeding. Under LD 12:12 conditions, the fish showed a diurnal behaviour, in many cases with a feeding rhythm with two main peaks of food demand at dawn and dusk, with an 8h interval of low feeding activity, and the actograms showed an expected 24 h rhythm. Fish kept under constant conditions (L : L, 15°±0.5°C), showed free‐running feeding activity for about 12 days. Food demands were concentrated at dawn, with a periodogram of 25.3 hour, under continuous environmental conditions. Results showed evidence for the endogenous origin of the circadian rhythm of feeding in this species.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and diel migratory behaviour of Pseudodiaptomus hessei in a freshwater lake is described. All stages showed a pronounced diel migration. During daylight naupliar and copepodite instars were almost exclusively benthic in shallow areas (<10m). Copepodite V and adult stages were predominantly benthic even at 40 m. The diurnal vertical distribution pattern implies age-related differences in photosensitivity and a possible depth-regulatory mechanism, based on the existence of differential photosensitivity, is offered to account for day-depth control. Nocturnal vertical distribution, studied approximately fortnightly during 1970–71, showed no clear seasonal variation. Variations in pattern, most obvious in adult instars, correlated with prevalent lunar conditions. Nocturnal or midnight sinking was evident, particularly in post-naupliar stages. Dusk rise and dawn descent were performed at very low light intensities and paralleled changes in light penetration. Dawn descent was less rapid than the dusk rise. An ephemeral dawn rise was sometimes observed but was not a consistent feature of all stages. An endogenous rhythm of locomotor activity was recorded under laboratory conditions. Activity was low during daylight, increased sharply at dusk and then decreased through the night to reach daytime levels at dawn. The stimulus provided by changes in light intensity and/or endogenous activity changes can account for the dusk and dawn movements of P. hessei but a definitive identification of the direct migratory stimulus is not possible. Attention is called to a closer examination of the role of endogenous activity rhythms in vertical migratory behaviour. The possible adaptive value of vertical migration to P. hessei is examined briefly.  相似文献

Synopsis In the Northern Bay of Biscay and west of the Iberian continental shelf five silver eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) have been tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and tracked 13 to 23 hours over a depth of 200 to 2500 m. Their mean direction from release to the final position of tracking was 288° and significantly closer to the direction of the Sargasso Sea (250° west) than silver eels tracked earlier in the North Sea (341°), possibly 260°. Four of the transmitters were equipped with pressure sensing devices capable of indicating depths of at least 400 m. Three eels tracked at night, during full moon, preferred mean depths of 125, 166 or 215 m. One eel chose a depth of 100 m during moonlight and 50 m after the setting of the moon. Major depth changes, usually occurring one per hour, ranged up to a maximum of 200 m at a maximum vertical speed of 0.6 m sec–1; this is close to the eels' normal horizontal speed. At dawn all but one dived to a depth of 400 m or more. The eels generally swam below the thermocline and often crossed it.  相似文献

Animals of the amphipod Orchestia montagui are kept in constant darkness with two short light pulses. One pulse is applied at the beginning of subjective night (around the dusk) and the other one at the end of subjective night (around the dawn). The pulse duration is estimated in the order of one or two hours around the dusk as well as the dawn. The locomotor activity rhythm was monitored in individual animals in summer under constant temperature. Results revealed that whatever the experimental conditions, under continuous or interrupted darkness by pulses, two endogenous components have been highlighted. In fact, Periodogram analysis showed the presence of ultradian and circadian periods around 12 and 24 h, respectively. The shortest circadian period and the most important inter-individual variability was observed under pulse of 2 h around the dusk with mean value equal to τDD+pulse = 24h38′ ± 4h34′. The activity profiles are in majority unimodal. Moreover, the most activity peak showed a slipping of its location from the middle of subjective night under constant darkness to the middle of subjective day under pulse. Globally, the locomotor activity rhythm of O. montagui was better defined under pulses and specimens were significantly more active under continuous darkness. Moreover, a great variability around the activity time was observed especially with pulse of 1 h.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms in physiological processes and behaviors were compared with hypothalamic circadian rhythms in norepinephrine (NE) metabolites, adrenergic transmitter receptors, cAMP, cGMP and suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) arginine vasopressin (AVP) in a single population of rats under D:D conditions. Eating, drinking and locomotor activity were high during the subjective night (the time when lights were out in L:D) and low during the subjective day (the time when lights were on in L:D). Plasma corticosterone concentration rose at subjective dusk and remained high until subjective dawn. Binding to hypothalamic alpha 1- and beta-adrenergic receptors also peaked during the subjective night. Cyclic cGMP concentration was elevated throughout the 24-hr period except for a trough at dusk, whereas DHPG concentration peaked at dawn. Arginine vasopressin levels in the suprachiasmatic nucleus peaked in the middle of the day. No rhythm was found either in binding to the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor, or in MHPG or cAMP concentration. Behavioral and corticosterone rhythms, therefore, are parallel to rhythms in hypothalamic alpha 1- and beta-receptor binding and NE-release. Cyclic GMP falls only at dusk, suggesting the possibility that cGMP inhibits activity much of the day and that at dusk the inhibition of nocturnal activity is removed. SCN AVP, on the other hand, peaking at 1400 hr, may play a role in the pacemaking function of the SCN that drives these other rhythms.  相似文献

An animal’s home range use is influenced by the landscape type. European hare (Lepus europaeus) home ranging behaviour has been studied only in agricultural areas with medium to large fields. In agricultural areas with small fields, European hares’ locomotor behaviour is expected to be more localised. We tracked nine European hares by means of global positioning system (GPS) and very high-frequency (VHF) collars during summer in an agricultural area with small fields in Lower Austria. In particular, we analysed the hares’ space use at a fine temporal scale, such as when they were active and resting within single 24-h periods. Furthermore, we compared data (day–day distances and day–night distances travelled) calculated from GPS and VHF telemetry. Home ranges were smaller, and the distances between areas used for activity and inactivity were shorter, in this agricultural area with small fields than has ever been measured in other agricultural areas with larger fields. Both active and inactive European hares expressed a preference for areas near field edges. Our findings suggest that with GPS, it is possible to distinguish between the movement path and the relative location of distinctly used areas within an animal’s home range, whereas with VHF these two parameters may be difficult to separate. In conclusion, our results show that in areas where resources are easily accessible, such as in agricultural areas with small fields, the European hare is able to reduce its home range size to almost half of the minimum size that has been recorded so far in other habitats. As small home ranges involve less energy expenditure for movement, our results suggest that animals living in agro-ecosystems may benefit from small fields.  相似文献

Dusk to dawn observations, using a bat detector and occasionally an image intensifier, were made outside two nursery roosts of lesser horseshoe bats Rhinolophus hipposideros from late May to September. Emergence was correlated with sunset but delayed by extended twilight. Light intensity was important in triggering departure and cloud cover advanced it. Light-testing behaviour was invariably undertaken, in the form of brief flights out and back into the roosts. The exit from one roost was shaded by trees and exploratory flights were generally more extended there. Heavy rain inhibited emergence. There was almost always intermittent activity throughout the night, with many individuals returning and departing, and no indication of seasonal or overnight peaks. A bat detector inside a third roost confirmed overnight observations at the other two. Some bats often returned to the roost for the night before dawn. Dawn return was linked to sunrise, prolonged twilight in midsummer hastening it. Colony size varied appreciably over periods of a few days and even overnight. There is some limited evidence that increased colony size, perhaps through social interaction, may have influenced timing of departure at dusk and return at dawn.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were carried out with Nephrops norvegicus (L.) collected from depths ranging from 10 to 184 m off the west coast of Britain. An endogenous circadian rhythm of locomotor activity was exhibited by prawns from all depths when kept under constant conditions in the laboratory. The rhythm was expressed as nocturnal activity mainly within the burrow, though the prawns repeatedly vacate the experimental burrow during the same period. If, as seems likely, prawns in the field also show burrow-orientated locomotor activity at night this would explain why they are caught in smaller numbers when on commercial fishing grounds attempts are made to trawl them during darkness.Peak catches in trawls occur at differing times of day according to depth, and other workers have suggested that this reflects emergence from burrows at optimal light intensities. Present laboratory experiments show that there is no endogenous basis for a distinct ‘emergence’ rhythm. They suggest that high catches at different times of day at different depths are determined by exogenous factors but not solely by some optimal light intensity. It was not possible to induce emergence from artificial burrows by exposing prawns to light intensities within the presumed optimum range for their depth of capture. Dusk and dawn changes of light intensity may have direct effects upon activity, and light may also have an indirect effect by controlling the availability of suitable food organisms and predators. Light may also have a direct effect by suppressing emergence around midday in intermediate depths, particularly in view of the poor or non-existent light-adapting responses of the retinal shielding pigments.  相似文献

The daily cycle of activity in the mole (Talpa europaea) and its seasonal changes, as revealed by radioactive monitoring of the nest
Published information on the activity rhythm of the mole ( Talpa europaea ), although limited to observations on a very few moles during February-April, had indicated a basic short-term cycle of approximately 8 hours. The technique used, manual tracking of radioactively tagged individuals with portable monitors, was modified for the present study to record automatically the presence or absence of the tagged mole at its nest site. Data were obtained for all months of the year, with a total of 797 days of records from 14 male and 13 female animals. The most characteristic feature of the records, irrespective of the time of year and thus daylength, was the sharpness of the transition from inactivity to activity at dawn and the reverse shortly prior to dusk. During midwinter, when daylength was short the animals tended to be active throughout the day, with few or no rest periods at the nest, and there was only one other active period, during the night. With increasing daylength there was usually a short rest period about midday so that the animals had the classical 3-cycle daily rhythm. In summer, with the longest days and shortest nights the timing of the daytime rest period was variable and there was often no active period during the night so that the short-term cycles were less distinct.  相似文献
