While prolactin (PRL) has been reported to increase food intake by virgin female rats, its effects on food intake by male rats are relatively unexplored. The present studies examined the possibility that PRL has sex-specific effects on food intake by rats. In the first study, intact female and male rats were given subcutaneous injections of saline vehicle or ovine (o) PRL (1.0 mg/kg) twice daily at 08:00 and 20:00 h for 10 days. Food intake, body weight, and water intake were measured daily. Results indicate that oPRL administration increased food intake by an average of 4.5 g per day in female subjects, but did not significantly alter body weight or water intake. Male rats treated with oPRL did not significantly alter their food intake, even after an additional five days of treatment. In the second study, a wide range of oPRL doses (vehicle, 0.02, 0.2, 2.0, and 20.0 mg/kg/day) were tested in gonadectomized female and male rats. The results indicate that female rats responded to increasingly larger doses of oPRL with greater increases in food intake, with a maximum increase of approximately 6. 1 g per day at a dose of 20.0 mg/kg. In contrast, male rats maintained baseline levels of intake across all oPRL doses tested. These data suggest that PRL has sex-specific effects on food intake.  相似文献

Flowers are more than objects that awaken passions: they were key evolutionary innovations leading to rapid diversification and the current dominance of flowering plants in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the major biological function that has been ascribed to petals is the mediation of interactions with pollinators. Here we show that petal surfaces can effectively capture and quickly allocate nitrogen ions available in wet atmospheric deposition into ovaries and developing seeds. In laboratory and field experiments we used 15N stable isotope at trace concentrations and measured petal intake in five species from five different families. We observed significant 15N increases in fully developed seeds when petals were exposed to 15N, contrasting with the lack of seed enrichment when 15N was applied just to soil or foliage. Translocation of 15N through petals occurred in a matter of hours, and mass recovery rates of isotope tracers in seeds were much higher through petals (44.6%) than soil (7.4%) or leaves (0%). Our experiments suggest that when reactive N is available from atmospheric sources, flower petals could act as permeable surfaces that can help reproductive structures meet demands of limiting nutrients.  相似文献

According to reproductive strategy theory, males in polygamousbreeding systems should invest in morphological or behavioralfeatures that increase reproductive success. When the earlydevelopment of such traits conflicts with predator protection,we expect that male calves will exhibit risk-taking behavior, such as high activity level and increasing distance from mother,to a greater extent than female calves. We investigated sexdifferences in mother–calf distance, calf activity levels, and calf mortality in a semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifertarandus) population. The results show that male calves strayfarther away from their mothers, exhibit a higher level of locomotivebehavior in terms of play and walking, and are more vulnerableto predation than are female calves. Although mother–calfdistance increased over time in 1- to 6-month-old calves, noevidence was apparent for an increase in sex difference in mother–calfdistance over this period. The results suggest a trade-off betweenpredation vulnerability and investments in behavioral traitsthought to be important for future reproductive success andsuggest that these sex-related differences in behavior are apparentas early as 6 months of age.  相似文献

Background

Individuals have to trade-off the costs and benefits of group membership during shoaling behaviour. Shoaling can increase the risk of parasite transmission, but this cost has rarely been quantified experimentally. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are a model system for behavioural studies, and they are commonly infected by gyrodactylid parasites, notorious fish pathogens that are directly transmitted between guppy hosts.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Parasite transmission in single sex shoals of male and female guppies were observed using an experimental infection of Gyrodactylus turnbulli. Parasite transmission was affected by sex-specific differences in host behaviour, and significantly more parasites were transmitted when fish had more frequent and more prolonged contact with each other. Females shoaled significantly more than males and had a four times higher risk to contract an infection.

Conclusions/Significance

Intersexual differences in host behaviours such as shoaling are driven by differences in natural and sexual selection experienced by both sexes. Here we show that the potential benefits of an increased shoaling tendency are traded off against increased risks of contracting an infectious parasite in a group-living species.  相似文献

The meiotic properties of paracentric inversion heterozygotes have been well studied in insects and plants, but not in mammalian species. In essence, a single meiotic recombination event within the inverted region results in the formation of a dicentric chromatid, which usually breaks or is stretched between the two daughter nuclei during the first meiotic anaphase. Here, we provide evidence that this is not the predominant mode of exchange resolution in female mice. In sharp contrast to previous observations in other organisms, we find that attempts to segregate the dicentric chromatid frequently result not in breakage, stretching, or loss, but instead in precocious separation of the sister centromeres of at least one homolog. This often further results in intact segregation of the dicentric into one of the meiotic products, where it can persist into the first few embryonic divisions. These novel observations point to an unusual mechanism for the processing of dicentric chromosomes in mammalian oogenesis. Furthermore, this mechanism is rare or nonexistent in mammalian spermatogenesis. Thus, our results provide additional evidence of sexual dimorphism in mammalian meiotic chromosome behavior; in "stressful" situations, meiotic sister chromatid cohesion is apparently handled differently in males than in females.  相似文献

Diet affects both lifespan and reproduction [1-9], leading to the prediction that the contrasting reproductive strategies of the sexes should result in sex-specific effects of nutrition on fitness and longevity [6, 10] and favor different patterns of nutrient intake in males and females. However, males and females share most of their genome and intralocus sexual conflict may prevent sex-specific diet optimization. We show that both male and female longevity were maximized on a high-carbohydrate low-protein diet in field crickets Teleogryllus commodus, but male and female lifetime reproductive performances were maximized in markedly different parts of the nutrient intake landscape. Given a choice, crickets exhibited sex-specific dietary preference in the direction that increases reproductive performance, but this sexual dimorphism in preference was incomplete, with both sexes displaced from the optimum diet for lifetime reproduction. Sexes are, therefore, constrained in their ability to reach their sex-specific dietary optima by the shared biology of diet choice. Our data suggest that sex-specific selection has thus far failed fully to resolve intralocus sexual conflict over diet optimization. Such conflict may be an important factor linking nutrition and reproduction to lifespan and aging.  相似文献

Females of Populus cathayana allocated increased N to soluble proteins, while males keep N allocation pattern unchanged under N enrichment.

Abstract

In our study, Populus cathayana as a model species is employed to detect the sex-specific responses in growth, photosynthetic nitrogen (N) use efficiency (PNUE), carbon (C) and N partitioning when exposed to 0, 7.5 and 15 g N m?2 year?1 on the basis of local N deposition level. Our results showed that females had higher responses in photosynthesis and growth than males when exposed to N deposition, and also exhibited higher PNUE than males when exposed to high level of N deposition, suggesting that plasticity in the females may enhance the capacity of young seedlings to acquire resources. Moreover, we found that females mainly allocated increased N to soluble proteins and detergent-soluble proteins, but not to cell-wall proteins, while males maintained original partitioning pattern of N and also accumulated excessive N in the form of free amino acids. Females also allocated more fraction of leaf N to carboxylation (P C), bioenergetics (P B), and then more fraction of leaf N to all components of photosynthetic machinery (P T) than males under high level of N deposition. Such sex-specific N allocation strategy may correlate with sex-related PNUE. These results indicated that there is a higher critical N demand in females, and females could use N nutrient more efficiently than males under high N deposition. We also found that higher shift from starch to soluble sugars, such as sucrose, occurred in females than in males under N enrichment. By contrast, excessive accumulation of starch and non-structural carbohydrate in females relative to males was observed under control conditions, which might inhibit female photosynthesis rate. Accordingly, we suggested that the different leaf C and N partitioning patterns could explain the sex-specific responses in growth. Therefore, females may obtain advantageous position in the process of intraspecific competition when exposed to high level of N deposition because they have higher light capture (total leaf area) ability and utilization efficiency (PNUE) than the males that confer the ability for fast growth and thus are likely to be more responsive to N enrichment. Our results suggested that it could be important to look at the stronger growth response of the females over the males under N enrichment at both the leaf and the plant scale.  相似文献

Effective wildlife management requires an understanding of how individuals select environmental factors, although few studies assess how habitat selection may differ over time or between sexes. During the post-breeding period (15 May to 1 Sep), we tracked 146 male American woodcock (Scolopax minor) in Rhode Island, USA, from 2010–2021 to assess how habitat selection varied over time, and 17 females and 51 males during the final 2 years of the study to document sex-specific differences in habitat selection. Males generally had smaller home ranges (35.0 ± 10.7 [margin of error] ha) and preferred habitat mosaics that consisted of forested wetlands, young forest patches, areas of deciduous forest, moist soils with gentle slopes, and riparian corridors. We detected subtle differences between sexes in selection for wetland young forest, upland young forest, percent slope, distance to upland young forest, distance to streams, and distance to moist soils. During 2020–2021, females tended to have larger home ranges (78.7 ± 46.4 ha) than males (35.0 ± 10.7 ha) and more strongly selected sites closer to riparian corridors, while males selected areas that were closer to upland young forest with flatter slopes than the available surrounding landscape. Such sex-specific differences in habitat selection may be related to males and females prospecting for potential breeding sites during this post-breeding period for the following spring. We used the top-ranked habitat selection models for males and females to produce a spatially explicit state-wide map that identifies low-to-high likelihood of use areas that can be used to guide forest management decisions in southern New England to maximize benefits for American woodcock.  相似文献

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is maintained constant despite changes in systemic blood pressure (BP) through multiple mechanisms of autoregulation such as vascular myogenic reactivity. Our aim was to determine myogenic characteristics of cannulated middle cerebral arteries (MCA) in male and female stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) at 12 wk of age under pressurised no-flow conditions. MCA pressure-diameter relationships (20-200 mmHg) were constructed in active (with calcium) and passive (without calcium) conditions, and myogenic and mechanical properties were determined. Myogenic reactivity in WKY (P < 0.05) and SHRSP (P < 0.05) males was impaired compared with their female counterparts. Comparison of SHRSP with WKY in males revealed similar myogenic reactivity, but in females SHRSP exhibited augmented myogenic reactivity (P < 0.05). In both sexes, myogenic tone yielded at lower pressure in SHRSP compared with WKY vessels (120-140 vs. 140-180 mmHg). Stress-strain relationships and elastic moduli in WKY rats showed that vessels were stiffer in females than in males. Conversely, in SHRSP, male vessels were stiffer than female vessels. Comparison of strains in males indicated that stiffness was increased in SHRSP compared with WKY vessels, whereas the converse was observed in females. These findings demonstrate that MCA myogenic and distensibility characteristics exhibit significant sex- and strain-dependent differences. Inappropriate myogenic adaptation and augmented vascular stiffness, particularly in male SHRSP, are potential limiting factors in blood flow autoregulation and may increase the predisposition for stroke-related cerebrovascular events.  相似文献

This study reports the diet of feral ferrets (Mustela furo) in a pastoral habitat, East Otago, South Island, New Zealand. Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were the most common prey of ferrets, occurring in 86.7% of seats, but birds (12.4%) and invertebrates (11.3%) were also frequently eaten. Female ferrets ate more non-lagomorph prey items, especially invertebrates and birds than males. No significant dietary differences were found between juvenile and adult ferrets except in summer when juveniles ate more lagomorph prey. There were seasonal differences in the consumption of rabbits, invertebrates, skinks, possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and small and large secondary prey items. Seasonal differences in ferret diet are likely to be related to the relative abundance of the various prey items. Lagomorph availability may also be a determinant of the frequency of occurrence of other prey items in the diet. Dietary differences may differentially influence the functional response of adults and juveniles and/or males and females to rabbit control or other manipulations of prey populations. Bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis) infections in ferret populations show intraspecific variation with more males than females and more adults than juveniles infected. Intraspecific dietary differences in diet were not observed in the species (possums and hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus)) considered to be the main sources of infection for ferrets.  相似文献

Sex differences in immunity are often observed, with males generally having a weaker immune system than females. However, recent data in a sex-role-reversed species in which females compete to mate with males suggest that sexually competitive females have a weaker immune response. These findings support the hypothesis that sexual dimorphism in immunity has evolved in response to sex-specific fitness returns of investment in traits such as parental investment and longevity, but the scarcity of data in sex-reversed species prevents us from drawing general conclusions. Using an insect species in which males make a large but variable parental investment in their offspring, we use two indicators of immunocompetence to test the hypothesis that sex-biased immunity is determined by differences in parental investment. We found that when the value of paternal investment was experimentally increased, male immune investment became relatively greater than that of females. Thus, in this system, in which the direction of sexual competition is plastic, the direction of sex-biased immunity is also plastic and appears to track relative parental investment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Reduced prey availability can affect the growth and survival of nestling seabirds. However, few studies have demonstrated similar effects on indices of adult body condition. We examined body condition and seasonal mass loss of breeding adult male and female Tufted Puffins ( Fratercula cirrhata ) at Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, in 2004–2005. We determined sex using genetic analysis, developed a discriminant function to determine sex using morphometric measurements, and examined the body condition of adult males and females relative to the growth rates of their offspring. We found that morphological measurements were only moderately useful for sexing Tufted Puffins, with 74% of adults ( N = 176) correctly classified. We also found that the relationship between adult body mass and size differed between sexes and conclude that body condition indices must be calculated separately for each sex to avoid inter- and intrasexual bias. Body condition of male and female Tufted Puffins declined during the chick-rearing period. However, body condition of females did not differ between years, whereas male condition declined to a greater degree during 2004 when the mass of young at fledging was significantly lower. Although these results suggest that adult male Tufted Puffins sacrifice their own body condition in years of diminished nestling growth and females do not, reasons for this apparent intersexual difference in reproductive strategies remain unclear.  相似文献

Flies were filmed simultaneously from above and from the side. Their flight tracks were analyzed frame by frame. Male and female flies were found to chase other flies. But female chases are brief and poorly controlled as compared to male chases. Female flies use the lower frontal part of their visual field for tracking other flies. Male flies use the upper frontal part of their visual field for that purpose. Male flies are capable of controlling their forward velocity roughly proportional to the distance to their target. Implications for the function of recently found sexdimorph visual interneurones are discussed.  相似文献

The mechanism(s) by which sex specific differences in regional body fat distribution develop are not known. We assessed the effects of a high-fat (HF) meal on fatty acid oxidation and uptake into regional fat depots using isotopic tracers and adipose biopsies. Thirty men (BMI 23.6 +/- 0.3 kg/m(2)) and 29 women (BMI 22.4 +/- 0.3 kg/m(2)) received a meal containing [(3)H]triolein. Twelve of the men and 13 of the women received an additional 80 g of triolein in the meal (HF) and the remainder received a normal-fat (NF) meal. Adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was measured in the fed and fasted state. After 24 h, meal fatty acid uptake into subcutaneous adipose tissue was assessed. The efficiency of meal fat uptake into upper body subcutaneous fat was similar in both sexes, but women had a greater leg fat uptake, especially in response to a HF meal (P < 0.0001). A correlation between fed-state LPL activity and meal fat uptake was found in both upper and lower body fat (P < 0.0001, r = 0.69). These studies show that, in times of net fat storage, women preferentially increase uptake in leg adipose tissue, and this is likely mediated by fed-state LPL activity.  相似文献
