The problems related to kinematic redundancy in both task and joint space were investigated for arm prehension movements in this paper. After a detailed analysis of kinematic redundancy of the arm, it is shown that the redundancy problem is ill posed only for the control of hand orientation. An experiment was then designed to investigate the influence of hand orientation on the control of arm movements. Since movements must be made within the limits of the joints, the influence of these limits was also analyzed quantitatively. The results of the experiment confirm that the increase of movement time because of the change of object orientation is due to the lengthening of the deceleration phase disproportionately to the rest of the movement. The variation of hand path due to the change of object orientation was observed as being surprisingly small for some subjects as opposed to the large range of object orientation, implying that hand path and hand orientation could be controlled separately, thus simplifying the computational problem of inverse kinematics. Moreover, the observations from the present experiment strongly suggest that a functional segmentation of the proximal and distal joints exists and that the control of wrist motion is dissociated from the rest of joint motions. The contribution of each joint in the control of arm movements could be determined through the principle of minimum energy and minimum discomfort under the constraints of the joint limits. A simplified inverse kinematics model was tested. It shows that these hypotheses can be easily implemented in a geometric algorithm and be used to predict arm prehension postures reasonably well under the constraints of joint limits. Reaching-to-grasp has generally been classified as the coordination of two separate visuomotor processes: transporting the hand to the target object and performing the grip. An alternative view has recently been formed that grasping can be explained as pointing movements performed by the digits of the hand to target positions on the object. We have previously implemented the minimum variance model of human movement as an optimal control scheme suitable for control of a robot arm reaching to a target. Here, we extend that scheme to perform grasping movements with a hand and arm model. Since the minimum variance model requires that signal-dependent noise be present on the motor commands to the actuators of the movement, our approach is to plan the reach and the grasp separately, in line with the classical view, but using the same computational model for pointing, in line with the alternative view. We show that our model successfully captures some of the key characteristics of human grasping movements, including the observations that maximum grip size increases with object size (with a slope of approximately 0.8) and that this maximum grip occurs at 60–80% of the movement time. We then use our model to analyse contributions to the digit end-point variance from the two components of the grasp (the transport and the grip). We also briefly discuss further areas of investigation that are prompted by our model.  相似文献

Path integration is a process in which self-motion is integrated over time to obtain an estimate of one's current position relative to a starting point (1). Humans can do path integration based exclusively on visual (2-3), auditory (4), or inertial cues (5). However, with multiple cues present, inertial cues - particularly kinaesthetic - seem to dominate (6-7). In the absence of vision, humans tend to overestimate short distances (<5 m) and turning angles (<30°), but underestimate longer ones (5). Movement through physical space therefore does not seem to be accurately represented by the brain. Extensive work has been done on evaluating path integration in the horizontal plane, but little is known about vertical movement (see (3) for virtual movement from vision alone). One reason for this is that traditional motion simulators have a small range of motion restricted mainly to the horizontal plane. Here we take advantage of a motion simulator (8-9) with a large range of motion to assess whether path integration is similar between horizontal and vertical planes. The relative contributions of inertial and visual cues for path navigation were also assessed. 16 observers sat upright in a seat mounted to the flange of a modified KUKA anthropomorphic robot arm. Sensory information was manipulated by providing visual (optic flow, limited lifetime star field), vestibular-kinaesthetic (passive self motion with eyes closed), or visual and vestibular-kinaesthetic motion cues. Movement trajectories in the horizontal, sagittal and frontal planes consisted of two segment lengths (1st: 0.4 m, 2nd: 1 m; ±0.24 m/s(2) peak acceleration). The angle of the two segments was either 45° or 90°. Observers pointed back to their origin by moving an arrow that was superimposed on an avatar presented on the screen. Observers were more likely to underestimate angle size for movement in the horizontal plane compared to the vertical planes. In the frontal plane observers were more likely to overestimate angle size while there was no such bias in the sagittal plane. Finally, observers responded slower when answering based on vestibular-kinaesthetic information alone. Human path integration based on vestibular-kinaesthetic information alone thus takes longer than when visual information is present. That pointing is consistent with underestimating and overestimating the angle one has moved through in the horizontal and vertical planes respectively, suggests that the neural representation of self-motion through space is non-symmetrical which may relate to the fact that humans experience movement mostly within the horizontal plane.  相似文献

Reach-to-grasp movements change quantitatively in a lawful (i.e. predictable) manner with changes in object properties. We explored whether altering object texture would produce qualitative changes in the form of the precontact movement patterns. Twelve participants reached to lift objects from a tabletop. Nine objects were produced, each with one of three grip surface textures (high-friction, medium-friction and low-friction) and one of three widths (50 mm, 70 mm and 90 mm). Each object was placed at three distances (100 mm, 300 mm and 500 mm), representing a total of 27 trial conditions. We observed two distinct movement patterns across all trials--participants either: (i) brought their arm to a stop, secured the object and lifted it from the tabletop; or (ii) grasped the object 'on-the-fly', so it was secured in the hand while the arm was moving. A majority of grasps were on-the-fly when the texture was high-friction and none when the object was low-friction, with medium-friction producing an intermediate proportion. Previous research has shown that the probability of on-the-fly behaviour is a function of grasp surface accuracy constraints. A finger friction rig was used to calculate the coefficients of friction for the objects and these calculations showed that the area available for a stable grasp (the 'functional grasp surface size') increased with surface friction coefficient. Thus, knowledge of functional grasp surface size is required to predict the probability of observing a given qualitative form of grasping in human prehensile behaviour.  相似文献

When watching an actor manipulate objects, observers, like the actor, naturally direct their gaze to each object as the hand approaches and typically maintain gaze on the object until the hand departs. Here, we probed the function of observers'' eye movements, focusing on two possibilities: (i) that observers'' gaze behaviour arises from processes involved in the prediction of the target object of the actor''s reaching movement and (ii) that this gaze behaviour supports the evaluation of mechanical events that arise from interactions between the actor''s hand and objects. Observers watched an actor reach for and lift one of two presented objects. The observers'' task was either to predict the target object or judge its weight. Proactive gaze behaviour, similar to that seen in self-guided action–observation, was seen in the weight judgement task, which requires evaluating mechanical events associated with lifting, but not in the target prediction task. We submit that an important function of gaze behaviour in self-guided action observation is the evaluation of mechanical events associated with interactions between the hand and object. By comparing predicted and actual mechanical events, observers, like actors, can gain knowledge about the world, including information about objects they may subsequently act upon.  相似文献

Motor learning in the context of arm reaching movements has been frequently investigated using the paradigm of force-field learning. It has been recently shown that changes to somatosensory perception are likewise associated with motor learning. Changes in perceptual function may be the reason that when the perturbation is removed following motor learning, the hand trajectory does not return to a straight line path even after several dozen trials. To explain the computational mechanisms that produce these characteristics, we propose a motor control and learning scheme using a simplified two-link system in the horizontal plane: We represent learning as the adjustment of desired joint-angular trajectories so as to achieve the reference trajectory of the hand. The convergence of the actual hand movement to the reference trajectory is proved by using a Lyapunov-like lemma, and the result is confirmed using computer simulations. The model assumes that changes in the desired hand trajectory influence the perception of hand position and this in turn affects movement control. Our computer simulations support the idea that perceptual change may come as a result of adjustments to movement planning with motor learning.  相似文献

In this study the temporal coupling between transport and manipulation components of prehension movements was tested. For this purpose two experiments were carried out. In Experiment 1 six normal subjects were required to reach and grasp one of three spheres located at three different distances (Blocked trials). In Experiment 2 a visual perturbation paradigm was used in which the location of the object to be reached and grasped could change at onset of arm movement (Perturbed trials). The results of this study exclude a temporal coupling between events of transport and manipulation components. On the contrary they suggest that manipulation component organizes its time course having information about the time required to reach the object.  相似文献

In a task requiring an optimal hand pointing (with regards to both time and accuracy) at a peripheral target, there is first a saccade of the eye within 250 ms, followed 100 ms later by the hand movement. However the latency of the hand movement is poorly correlated with that of the eye movement. When the peripheral target is cut off at the onset of the saccade, there is no correlation between the error of the gaze position and the error of the hand pointing. This suggests an early parallel processing of the two motor outputs. The duration of hand movement does not change significantly when subjects either see or not see their hand (closed or open loop). In the open loop situation, the undershoot of the hand pointing increases with target eccentricity, whatever the subjects are allowed or not to do a saccade toward the target. It suggests that the encoding of eye position by itself is a poor index for an accurately guided movement of the hand.  相似文献

Background

In rubber hand illusions and full body illusions, touch sensations are projected to non-body objects such as rubber hands, dolls or virtual bodies. The robustness, limits and further perceptual consequences of such illusions are not yet fully explored or understood. A number of experiments are reported that test the limits of a variant of the rubber hand illusion.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A variant of the rubber hand illusion is explored, in which the real and foreign hands are aligned in personal space. The presence of the illusion is ascertained with participants'' scores and temperature changes of the real arm. This generates a basic illusion of touch projected to a foreign arm. Participants are presented with further, unusual visuotactile stimuli subsequent to onset of the basic illusion. Such further visuotactile stimulation is found to generate very unusual experiences of supernatural touch and touch on a non-hand object. The finding of touch on a non-hand object conflicts with prior findings, and to resolve this conflict a further hypothesis is successfully tested: that without prior onset of the basic illusion this unusual experience does not occur.

Conclusions/Significance

A rubber hand illusion is found that can arise when the real and the foreign arm are aligned in personal space. This illusion persists through periods of no tactile stimulation and is strong enough to allow very unusual experiences of touch felt on a cardboard box and experiences of touch produced at a distance, as if by supernatural causation. These findings suggest that one''s visual body image is explained away during experience of the illusion and they may be of further importance to understanding the role of experience in delusion formation. The findings of touch on non-hand objects may help reconcile conflicting results in this area of research. In addition, new evidence is provided that relates to the recently discovered psychologically induced temperature changes that occur during the illusion.  相似文献

Background

Coactivation of primary motor cortex ipsilateral to a unilateral movement (M1ipsilateral) has been observed, and the magnitude of activation is influenced by the contracting muscles. It has been suggested that the microstructural integrity of the callosal motor fibers (CMFs) connecting M1 regions may reflect the observed response. However, the association between the structural connectivity of CMFs and functional changes in M1ipsilateral remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between functional changes within M1ipsilateral during unilateral arm or leg movements and the microstructure of the CMFs connecting both homotopic representations (arm or leg).

Methods

Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to assess changes in motor evoked potentials (MEP) in an arm muscle during unilateral movements compared to rest in fifteen healthy adults. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was then used to identify regions of M1 associated with either arm or leg movements. Diffusion-weighted imaging data was acquired to generate CMFs for arm and leg areas using the areas of activation from the functional imaging as seed masks. Individual values of regional fractional anisotropy (FA) of arm and leg CMFs was then calculated by examining the overlap between CMFs and a standard atlas of corpus callosum.

Results

The change in the MEP was significantly larger in the arm movement compared to the leg movement. Additionally, regression analysis revealed that FA in the arm CMFs was positively correlated with the change in MEP during arm movement, whereas a negative correlation was observed during the leg movement. However, there was no significant relationship between FA in the leg CMF and the change in MEP during the movements.

Conclusions

These findings suggest that individual differences in interhemispheric structural connectivity may be used to explain a homologous muscle-dominant effect within M1ipsilateral hand representation during unilateral movement with topographical specificity.  相似文献

It has been widely claimed that linear models of the neuromuscular apparatus give very inaccurate approximations of human arm reaching movements. The present paper examines this claim by quantifying the contributions of the various non-linear effects of muscle force generation on the accuracy of linear approximation. We performed computer simulations of a model of a two-joint arm with six monarticular and biarticular muscles. The global actions of individual muscles resulted in a linear dependence of the joint torques on the joint angles and angular velocities, despite the great non-linearity of the muscle properties. The effect of time delay in force generation is much more important for model accuracy than all the non-linear effects, while ignoring this time delay in linear approximation results in large errors. Thus, the viscosity coefficients are rather underestimated and some of them can even be paradoxically estimated to be negative. Similarly, our computation showed that ignoring the time delay resulted in large errors in the estimation of the hand equilibrium trajectory. This could explain why experimentally estimated hand equilibrium trajectories may be complex, even during a simple reaching movement. The hand equilibrium trajectory estimated by a linear model becomes simple when the time delay is taken into account, and it is close to that actually used in the non-linear model. The results therefore provide a theoretical basis for estimating the hand equilibrium trajectory during arm reaching movements and hence for estimating the time course of the motor control signals associated with this trajectory, as set out in the equilibrium point hypothesis. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eye movement on the control of arm movement to a target. Healthy humans flexed the elbow to a stationary target in response to a start tone. Simultaneously, the subject moved the eyes to the target (saccade eye movement), visually tracked a laser point moving with the arm (smooth pursuit eye movement), or gazed at a stationary start point at the midline of the horizontal visual angle (non-eye movement—NEM). Arm movement onset was delayed when saccade eye movement accompanied it. The onset of an electromyographic burst in the biceps muscle and the onset of saccade eye movement were almost simultaneous when both the arm and the eyes moved to the target. Arm movement duration during smooth pursuit eye movement was significantly longer than that during saccade eye movement or NEM. In spite of these findings, amplitudes of motor-evoked potential in the biceps and triceps brachii muscles were not significantly different among the eye movement conditions. These findings indicate that eye movement certainly affects the temporal control of arm movement, but may not affect corticospinal excitability in the arm muscles during arm movement.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that humans track a moving visual target with their eyes better if the movement of this target is directly controlled by the observer's hand. The improvement in performance has been attributed to coordination control between the arm motor system and the smooth pursuit (SP) system. In such a task, the SP system shows characteristics that differ from those observed during eye-alone tracking: latency (between the target-arm and the eye motion onsets) is shorter, maximum SP velocity is higher and the maximum target motion frequency at which the SP can function effectively is also higher. The aim of this article is to qualitatively evaluate the behavior of a dynamical model simulating the oculomotor system and the arm motor system when both are involved in tracking visual targets. The evaluation is essentially based on a comparison of the behavior of the model with the behavior of human subjects tracking visual targets under different conditions. The model has been introduced and quantitatively evaluated in a companion paper. The model is based on an exchange of internal information between the two sensorimotor systems, mediated by sensory signals (vision, arm muscle proprioception) and motor signals (arm motor command copy). The exchange is achieved by a specialized structure of the central nervous system, previously identified as a part of the cerebellum. Computer simulation of the model yielded results that fit the behavior of human subjects observed during previously reported experiments, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The parallelism between physiology and human behavior on the one hand, and structure and simulation of the model on the other hand, is discussed. Improvement in prosthetic training using intermanual transfer (the transfer of motor skills from the trained, “unaffected” hand to the untrained, “affected” hand) has been shown in previous studies. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of the inter-training interval on the magnitude of the intermanual transfer effects. This was done using a mechanistic, randomized, single-blinded pretest-posttest design. Sixty-four able-bodied, right-handed participants were randomly assigned to the Short and Long Interval Training Groups and the Short and Long Interval Control Groups. The Short and Long Interval Training Groups used a prosthesis simulator in their training program. The Short and Long Interval Control Groups executed a sham training program, that is, a dummy training program in which the same muscles were trained as with the prosthesis simulator. The Short Interval Training Group and the Short Interval Control Groups trained on consecutive days, while the Long Interval Training Group and Long Interval Control Group trained twice a week. To determine the improvement in skills, a test was administered before, immediately after, and at two points in time after the training. Training was performed with the “unaffected” arm; tests were performed with the “affected” arm. The outcome measurements were: the movement time (the time from the beginning of the movement until completion of the task); the duration of maximum hand opening, (the opening of the prosthetic hand while grasping an object); and the grip-force control (the error from the required grip-force during a tracking task). Intermanual transfer was found in movement times, but not in hand opening or grip-force control. The length of the inter-training interval did not affect the magnitude of intermanual transfer effects. No difference in the intermanual transfer effect in upper-limb prosthesis training was found for training on a daily basis as compared to training twice a week.

The aim of this study was to verify the contribution of haptic and auditory cues in the quick discrimination of an object mass. Ten subjects had to brake with the right hand the movement of a cup due to the falling impact of an object that could be of two different masses. They were asked to perform a quick left hand movement if the object was of the prescribed mass according to the proprioceptive and auditory cues they received from object contact with the cup and did not react to the other object. Three conditions were established: with both proprioceptive and auditory cues, only with proprioceptive cue or only with an auditory cue. When proprioceptive information was available subjects advanced responses time to the impact of the heavy object as compared with that of the light object. The addition of an auditory cue did not improve the advancement for the heavy object. We conclude that when a motor response has to be chosen according to different combinations of auditory and proprioceptive load-related information, subjects used mainly haptic information to fast respond and that auditory cues do not add relevant information that could ameliorate the quickness of a correct response.  相似文献

Male Wistar rats (n = 18) were studied at the age of 120 days after social deprivation in the period from the 22nd to 70th days of postnatal development. They displayed significant lower activity in the open field, elevated plus-maze, and Porsolt test than control animals (n = 19). Decreased exploratory activity was found to be related with higher level of anxiety. This was confirmed by their avoidance of open arms of the elevated plusmaze and reactions to approaching hand. These animals had problems in the maze arm choice. They showed low time variability of choice-related actions (waiting in the center of the open field or elevated plus-maze and change in the movement direction along an open-field wall, including the movement per se, and arm choice and changing, i.e., alternative choice). Shorter time of choice-related actions was observed in situations of unequal alternatives.  相似文献

Visual latencies, and their variation with stimulus attributes, can provide information about the level in the visual system at which different attributes of the image are analysed, and decisions about them made. A change in the colour, structure or movement of a visual stimulus brings about a highly reproducible transient constriction of the pupil that probably depends on visual cortical mechanisms. We measured this transient response to changes in several attributes of visual stimuli, and also measured manual reaction times to the same stimulus changes. Through analysis of latencies, we hoped to establish whether changes in different stimulus attributes were processed by mechanisms at the same or different levels in the visual pathway. Pupil responses to a change in spatial structure or colour are almost identical, but both are ca. 40 ms slower than those to a change in light flux, which are thought to depend largely on subcortical pathways. Manual reaction times to a change in spatial structure or colour, or to the onset of coherent movement, differ reliably, and all are longer than the reaction time to a change in light flux. On average, observers take 184 ms to detect a change in light flux, 6 ms more to detect the onset of a grating, 30 ms more to detect a change in colour, and 37 ms more to detect the onset of coherent motion. The pattern of latency variation for pupil responses and reaction times suggests that the mechanisms that trigger the responses lie at different levels in cortex. Given our present knowledge of visual cortical organization, the long reaction time to the change in motion is surprising. The range of reaction times across different stimuli is consistent with decisions about the onset of a grating being made in V1 and decisions about the change in colour or change in motion being made in V4.  相似文献

Use of illicit stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy are a significant worldwide problem. However, little is known about the effect of these drugs on movement. The aim of the current study was to investigate hand function in adults with a history of illicit stimulant use. We hypothesized that prior use of illicit stimulant drugs is associated with abnormal manipulation of objects. The study involved 22 subjects with a history of illicit stimulant use (aged 29±8 yrs; time since last use: 1.8±4.0 yrs) and two control groups comprising 27 non-drug users (aged 25±8 yrs) and 17 cannabis users with no history of stimulant use (aged 22±5 yrs). Each subject completed screening tests (neuropsychological assessment, medical history questionnaire, lifetime drug history questionnaire, and urine drug screen) prior to gripping and lifting a light-weight object with the dominant right hand. Horizontal grip force, vertical lift force, acceleration, and first dorsal interosseus electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded during three trials. In trial one, peak grip force was significantly greater in the stimulant group (12.8±3.9 N) than in the control groups (non-drug: 10.3±4.6 N; cannabis: 9.4±2.9 N, P<0.022). However, peak grip force did not differ between groups in trials two and three. The results suggest that individuals with a history of stimulant use overestimate the grip force required to manipulate a novel object but, are able to adapt grip force in subsequent lifts. The results suggest that movement dysfunction may be an unrecognized consequence of illicit stimulant use.  相似文献

The cerebellum has been proposed to be a crucial component in the state estimation process that combines information from motor efferent and sensory afferent signals to produce a representation of the current state of the motor system. Such a state estimate of the moving human arm would be expected to be used when the arm is rapidly and skillfully reaching to a target. We now report the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the ipsilateral cerebellum as healthy humans were made to interrupt a slow voluntary movement to rapidly reach towards a visually defined target. Errors in the initial direction and in the final finger position of this reach-to-target movement were significantly higher for cerebellar stimulation than they were in control conditions. The average directional errors in the cerebellar TMS condition were consistent with the reaching movements being planned and initiated from an estimated hand position that was 138 ms out of date. We suggest that these results demonstrate that the cerebellum is responsible for estimating the hand position over this time interval and that TMS disrupts this state estimate.  相似文献
