Data on predator fish feeding in the Rybinsk reservoir in the first years (2000–2003) of Ponto-Caspian kilka expansion are given. It is shown that the kilka’s penetration into the Rybinsk reservoir caused changes in the feeding spectra of predator fish. Kilka became one of the main objects of predator feeding throughout the whole year. In the open water period, it is consumed by pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca (Linnaeus) and Volga pikeperch Stizostedion volgense (Gmelin) in the pelagial and by pike Esox lucius Linnaeus and perch Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus in the sublittoral and shallow bays. In winter it is mostly eaten by burbot Lota lota (Linnaeus) and pikeperch.  相似文献

This study evaluates the possible competition for food between Lamprichthys tanganicanus, recently introduced in Lake Kivu, and Limnothrissa miodon, which has been the basis of the pelagic fishery in this lake for several decades. Since 2006, L. tanganicanus has expanded in the lake and its numbers have increased in the captures, raising concern for the sardine fishery. We carried out a 2-year monthly survey, based on experimental captures in littoral and pelagic stations, which demonstrated the invasive dispersal of L. tanganicanus in littoral and pelagic waters. The diet of both species was determined on the basis of gut content analyses, taking into account the influence of site and season, and a diet overlap index was calculated. In the pelagic zone, where almost all size classes of both species were present and essentially fed upon mesozooplankton, the diet overlap was high. This situation stems from the fact that L. tanganicanus has colonized the pelagic zone in Lake Kivu, likely in search for more abundant mesozooplankton. Inshore, the diet overlap between the two species was lower, as L. tanganicanus consumed a broad range of food, whereas L. miodon strongly selected insects and, chiefly for the largest specimens, fishes. These results suggest a likelihood of interspecific competition, particularly offshore, where mesozooplankton is the main available food type, and call for further monitoring of the sardine fishery, to assess a possible impact of the invader.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the diet of Channa limbata, a predatory fish from western Thailand, in relation to mass, mouth and body morphology and intestine length. The cluster analysis we performed on the prey-specific abundance values of the dietary items yielded four size-classes based on diet. There was a shift from detritus and smaller benthic invertebrates in the diet of the first size class, to a mainly piscivorous diet in the fourth size-class as well as a steep increase in mass at the onset of piscivory. We found no significant change in relative intestine length with ontogeny, and the average relative intestine length value for C. limbata indicated primarily carnivorous feeding habits throughout ontogeny. Ontogenetic changes in mouth dimensions account primarily for the shift in diet, however the ontogenetic change in body morphology is of secondary importance.  相似文献

Biological traits (distribution, reproduction, age composition, body length and weight) of pikeperch Sander lucioperca from channel parts of the Akhtuba River, remote from the Volga Delta, are investigated. In the investigated stretch of the river, movements of most specimens of pikeperch are local and occur in the deep part (4?10 m) of the channel. Aggregations of fish are not confined to any definite points but move along the extensive stretch of broads. Pikeperch prefer near-bottom biotopes confined to the zone of stable hydrodynamic eddies in places of complicated bottom relief—transverse crests and longitudinal channel crests. For the first time, it is found that pikeperch in the under-ice period move to the shallow zone of submersed inshore shrubs. The age structure and body length and weight of pikeperch differ from those in the Volga Delta and correspond more to the populations from northern and northwestern parts of the species area. Pikeperch spawn only in temporary water bodies of the accessory system, within a short period at the temperature 11?17°С. The data on biology of pikeperch from the Akhtuba channel indicate the populational level of differences from the Volga Delta pikeperch.  相似文献

Pikeperch is an efficient predator in the pelagic zone of eutrophic and hypertrophic lakes and has, therefore, been used in several biomanipulation projects. Pikeperch stocking has also been part of the manipulation strategy in Feldberger Haussee, Germany. From 1996 to 1999, population development, growth and diet composition of pikeperch in Feldberger Haussee were studied. From 1996 to 1998, the population was dominated by two cohorts. Only in years with warm summers, recruitment from 0+ fish to older age-classes was successful. It appears likely that due to the relatively high depth of the lake the spawning period is delayed as a result of a slower temperature increase in spring. Therefore, 0+ pikeperch cannot benefit from the spring maximum of the zooplankton. This may be the reason for the slow growth and consequently, hampers the switch to piscivory for the majority of 0+ pikeperch. However, after becoming piscivorous, the pikeperch showed a reasonably good growth. Predation was mainly directed towards roach and 0+ perch, the major planktivores. The results of the present study confirm the role of pikeperch as an efficient predator of zooplanktivorous fish in open-water dominated lakes. Yet, it is suggested that the probability of successful recruitment of pikeperch in deeper, stratified lakes is reduced. Therefore, stable self-sustaining pikeperch populations cannot be expected in such lakes and regular stocking measures may be necessary even if a potential spawning stock exists.  相似文献

To enhance our understanding of dietary adaptations and socioecological correlates in colobines, we conducted a 20-mo study of a wild group of Rhinopithecus bieti (Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys) in the montane Samage Forest. This forest supports a patchwork of evergreen broadleaved, evergreen coniferous, and mixed deciduous broadleaved/coniferous forest assemblages with a total of 80 tree species in 23 families. The most common plant families by basal area are the predominantly evergreen Pinaceae and Fagaceae, comprising 69% of the total tree biomass. Previous work has shown that lichens formed a consistent component in the monkeys’ diet year-round (67%), seasonally complemented with fruits and young leaves. Our study showed that although the majority of the diet was provided by 6 plant genera (Acanthopanax, Sorbus, Acer, Fargesia, Pterocarya, and Cornus), the monkeys fed on 94 plant species and on 150 specific food items. The subjects expressed high selectivity for uncommon angiosperm tree species. The average number of plant species used per month was 16. Dietary diversity varied seasonally, being lowest during the winter and rising dramatically in the spring. The monkeys consumed bamboo shoots in the summer and bamboo leaves throughout the year. The monkeys also foraged on terrestrial herbs and mushrooms, dug up tubers, and consumed the flesh of a mammal (flying squirrel). We also provide a preliminary evaluation of feeding competition in Rhinopithecus bieti and find that the high selectivity for uncommon seasonal plant food items distributed in clumped patches might create the potential for food competition. The finding is corroborated by observations that the subjects occasionally depleted leafy food patches and stayed at a greater distance from neighboring conspecifics while feeding than while resting. Key findings of this work are that Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys have a much more species-rich plant diet than was previously believed and are probably subject to moderate feeding competition.  相似文献

Foraging behaviors of the piscivorous cornetfish Fistularia commersonii were observed at shallow reefs in Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan. This fish foraged on two types of prey fishes: one was reef fish that typically dwell on or near substrata (e.g., Tripterygiidae and Labridae), and the other was pelagic fish that shoal in the water column (e.g., Clupeidae and Carangidae). The prey sizes, prey types and foraging behaviors changed as the predator size increased. Prey sizes were largely limited by gape size of the cornetfish, and small predators consumed small prey. The small cornetfish (10–30 cm in total length) fed only on reef fish captured after stalking (where the fish slowly approaches the prey and then suddenly attacks). The stalking was done either solitarily or in foraging association with conspecifics. Large fish (30–120 cm) fed on both types of fishes by stalking and/or chasing (where the fish chases the prey using its high mobility and attacks), either solitarily or in foraging association with con- or heterospecifics. Thus, chasing was only performed by the large cornetfish against pelagic prey fish in associative foraging with other con- and heterospecific predators. As their body sizes increased, F. commersonii began to show a diversification of foraging behaviors, which was strongly related not only to the habitat types and anti-predatory behaviors of the prey fishes but also to associative foraging with con- or heterospecifics, which improves their foraging success.  相似文献

Based on biochemical markers, we studied the nutrition ranges of populations of Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis mussels that inhabit the Volga reach of the Rybinsk reservoir and differ in the long-term population dynamics. Features of the nutrition ranges of mussels are regarded as the probable cause of changes in the number of mollusca.  相似文献

Black-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nigripes) are Southeast Asian colobines about which primatologists know very little, but they are classed as endangered because of population decline due to habitat loss. Two preliminary studies have shown that this monkey is primarily folivorous, but there are few details of plant selection or seasonal changes in diet. We set out to observe douc langurs directly in the wild to quantify the diet during wet and dry seasons. We confirmed that the species relies on foliage throughout the year, but it includes significant proportions of fruit and flowers in its diet when those items are available. The douc langurs selected various parts from 152 species of plants in 2 national parks, but there did not appear to be favorite species that were heavily selected over others. In both the wet and dry seasons, the black-shanked douc langurs ate mostly leaves, but the diversity of plants consumed increased and the proportion of fruit eaten almost doubled in the wet season. There were diurnal shifts in food selection, but we found no evidence that the douc langurs were foraging strategically to maximize their protein or energy intake.  相似文献

We studied habitat choice, diet, food consumption and somatic growth of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) during the ice-covered winter period of a subarctic lake in northern Norway. Both Arctic charr and brown trout predominantly used the littoral zone during winter time. Despite very cold winter conditions (water temperature <1°C) and poor light conditions, both fish species fed continuously during the ice-covered period, although at a much lower rate than during the summer season. No somatic growth could be detected during the ice-covered winter period and the condition factor of both species significantly declined, suggesting that the winter feeding rates were similar to or below the maintenance requirements. Also, the species richness and diversity of ingested prey largely decreased from summer to winter for both fish species. The winter diet of Arctic charr <20 cm was dominated by benthic insect larvae, chironomids in particular, and Gammarus lacustris, but zooplankton was also important in December. G. lacustris was the dominant prey of charr >20 cm. The winter diet of brown trout <20 cm was dominated by insect larvae, whereas large-sized trout mainly was piscivorous, feeding on juvenile Arctic charr. Piscivorous feeding behaviour of trout was in contrast rarely seen during the summer months when their encounter with potential fish prey was rare as the small-sized charr mainly inhabited the profundal. The study demonstrated large differences in the ecology and interactions of Arctic charr and brown trout between the winter and summer seasons.  相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. We studied the diet, habitat use, and ranging behavior of 1 group of Callimico goeldii (callimicos) over 12 mo in northwestern Bolivia. The group’s diet was comprised of fungi (39%), fruits (31%), arthropods (14%), exudates (14%), and other matter (2%). Callimicos concentrated their ranging activities in secondary forest (50%), primary forest with dense understory (30%), and bamboo (17%) habitats. The group’s total home range was 114 ha; on average they used 38.4 ha/ mo and had a day range of 925 m. Monthly average day ranges—but not monthly home ranges—increased as frugivory declined, suggesting that subjects foraged on fungi and exudates by rechecking resources within a core area, making their day ranges longer than during months when they concentrated on fruit resources. The callimicos formed polyspecific associations with tamarins (Saguinus labiatus and S. fuscicollis) during 81% of observations. Day ranges increased in months with higher association rates which appears to result from the callimicos using a broader set of habitats when with tamarins than when alone. The ranging pattern of callimicos appears to be influenced primarily by 3 factors: their seasonal shift in diet requires that they forage in a variety of habitats across the year; their depletion of resources causes them to shift their core area over time; and their lack of territorial behavior eliminates the need to patrol boundaries as part of their daily movement. As a result, callimicos differ from many other callitrichids in their low ratio of day range length to home range size.  相似文献

Despite the common occurrence of ontogenetic niche shifts, their consequences for morphological adaptations have been little studied. To address this question, we studied morphological adaptations related to ontogenetic niche shifts in Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) in eight lakes that varied in density of benthic resources and planktivorous fish biomass. Perch start to feed on pelagic zooplankton, then shift to benthic resources at intermediate sizes, and finally, when large enough, mainly feed on fish. These three functional niches over ontogeny are expected to set constraints on the morphology and size-specific growth of perch. The growth of perch was negatively related to planktivorous fish biomass in the zooplanktivorous niche, but positively related to planktivorous fish biomass in the piscivorous niche. The number of gill rakers of perch was negatively related to the biomass of planktivorous fish, providing evidence for the occurrence of character displacement as a consequence of competition in the zooplanktivorous niche. Perch in lakes with low densities of predator-sensitive macroinvertebrates had greater body height measurements and a larger mouth early during ontogeny. This pattern is suggested to be a result of a selection for increased efficiency in the benthic niche when the availability of benthic resources is low. Perch in lakes with a high biomass of planktivorous fishes had fusiform body morphology, a thicker tail and a larger mouth then the average piscivorous perch. The different responses of perch morphology to variation in the availability of benthic resources compared to variation in planktivore biomass are suggested to be partly because the availability of the former resource to a larger extent is set by abiotic conditions (humic content). We suggest that the key factors affecting size-specific growth and body morphology of perch in the system studied are the availability of resources in the benthivorous and piscivorous niches. We also provide evidence for morphological trade-offs, especially between the benthivorous and the piscivorous ontogenetic niches. Received: 6 July 1999 / Accepted: 8 September 1999  相似文献

In the presence of size-selective fish daphnids were shown to exhibit two alternative inducible defence strategies: They may either escape predation by active migration or adopt a life history strategy, e.g., reproduce earlier and at a smaller size. Depending on the type of habitat, migration may either be vertically (in deep stratified lakes) or horizontally (in shallow lakes with macrophytes) oriented. Concerning behavioural defence strategies, daphnids living in medium-deep, weakly stratified water bodies with a poorly developed littoral face a dilemma, since the littoral provides no shelter and the availability of a deep-water refuge is unpredictable. We studied the population dynamics, life history changes (size at maturity) and daytime vertical distribution of Daphnia galeata in a weakly stratified reservoir in relation to predation by juvenile fish during 6 years. While temperature gradients were usually small, oxygen concentrations suggest that a low-oxygen refuge for daphnids was available in every year to some extent. Our results indicate that, depending on predation intensity and stratification patterns, daphnids exhibit both, behavioural and life history defences. In years with a high biomass of young-of-the-year (YOY) perch Daphnia abundance declined rapidly at the end of the clear water stage while at the same time the vertical distribution at daytime shifted to deep strata providing a low-oxygen refuge and the size at maturity decreased. However, while the life history response in some years lasted throughout most of the summer period, a shift in daytime vertical distribution was exhibited for much shorter periods. Both traits were much less expressed in years with low YOY fish densities and no negative correlation between them could be verified. We suggest that under high predation pressure in this relatively shallow reservoir no strictly alternative (either behavioural or life history) strategies exist, but that daphnids make use of the full range of possible anti-predator defences available, at least during short periods when predation is most intense. Forty two Streptomycetes isolates from soils of Kodachadri region in Western ghats were recovered by soil dilution technique. Cross streak method was followed for primary screening of antifungal activity. Positive isolates were subjected to secondary screening by cold extraction of fermentation broth in butanol solvent. Six isolates exhibited broad spectrum antifungal activity against all the tested yeast pathogens like Candida albicans, Candida lipolytica, Cryptococcus neoformens and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One isolate showed excellent antifungal activity against all test organisms with maximum zone of inhibition 60 mm each incase of C. neoformens and C. albicans. Partial characterization of antifungal metabolite by TLC resulted in a purple spot with an Rf value 0.50. The UV absorption spectra at 218 nm indicated possible chemical nature of the active metabolite as polyene group and purity was assessed by analytical HPLC.  相似文献

The influence of body size on the consumption of live zooplankton (Daphnia spp.) by freshwater crayfish was examined using yabbies (Cherax destructor) ranging from 5 to 45 g. Food preference between live zooplankton and inert pellets was also assessed under experimental conditions. In experimental tanks, yabbies of four size classes (<15, 15–24.9, 25–34.9 and 35–45 g) were presented with live Daphnia. All yabbies were held in separate tanks with five animals per size class. In yabbies less than 15 g, the feeding mode on zooplankton involved rapid searching and probing with the first two pairs of walking legs. Once a prey was located, the chelae on the end of these walking legs would grasp the zooplankton and then rapidly move it towards the mouthparts. Yabbies larger than 25 g tended to use their walking legs to push the Daphnia nearer to their third maxilliped which would then force or scoop the zooplankton towards the mouthparts. A short-term feeding trial showed that there was no significant difference between size classes in regards to zooplankton consumption (P > 0.05). Capture efficiency of live Daphnia by yabbies less than 15 g was significantly lower (76%, P = 0.008) than the three larger size classes (93.6%). Yabbies less than 15 g consumed a significantly (P < 0.001) higher percentage (5.2%) of their body weight than the other size classes (1.1%, 0.8%, and 0.6%, respectively). In the presence of both live zooplankton and a pellet diet, yabbies spent significantly (P = 0.005) more time feeding on zooplankton (85%) than on inert pellets (15%). This was the first study to quantify zooplankton consumption by yabbies and the results provide insights into understanding the trophic role of freshwater crayfish in structuring zooplankton communities and the husbandry management of crayfish farming. Pelagic cnidarians are important consumers of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the world’s oceans, and thus harm fisheries as competitors and predators of fish. This study examined the inshore-offshore distribution of pelagic cnidarians and the trophic ecology of Pelagia noctiluca ephyrae (<12 mm diameter) and larger medusae in late spring 1995 in the NW Mediterranean Sea. The distribution of pelagic cnidarians was closely related to the presence of the shelf-slope front with most species mainly concentrated close to the front. Meroplanktonic antho- and leptomedusae predominated in coastal waters and more holoplanktonic trachy- and narcomedusae occurred both in shelf and open sea waters. P. noctiluca was more abundant than other medusae, including hydromedusae. Siphonophores, particularly Muggiaea atlantica, outnumbered medusae at most stations. The diet of P. noctiluca ephyrae contained mainly copepods, but ~12% of the prey were fish larvae. P. noctiluca exhibited positive prey selection for chaetognaths and mollusc larvae in day and night samples, but fish larvae were positively selected only at night. These differences may be related to the diel vertical distributions of P. noctiluca and their prey. Most of the ingested fish larvae belonged to the family Myctophidae, but anchovy and sparid larvae also were found in the gastric pouches. The size of ingested fish larvae increased as ephyra diameter increased; however, in the larger medusae (>12 mm) the number of prey increased with medusa size rather than the size of the larvae. The temporal and spatial co-occurrence of P. noctiluca with early life stages of fish suggests that P. noctiluca may be an important predator on summer ichthyoplankton.  相似文献

The low-molecular-weight glutenin subunit composition of a collection of 403 accessions of spelt wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta L. em. Thell) was analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Extensive variation was found, including 46 different patterns for zone B and 16 for zone C. Patterns within zone B exhibited from two to six bands and patterns in zone C had between four and six bands in SDS-PAGE gels. A higher number of bands was observed when urea was added to the gels. Zone B exhibited between six and 11 bands, and we identified 14 new patterns in this zone. For zone C, up to ten new patterns that comprised between five and nine bands were detected. For both zones, 86 patterns were found. The variability detected in this material is greater than that detected in other hulled wheats.Communicated by H.F. Linskens  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of phosphorus concentration (1, 4 and 10 mg l−1) and temperature (15 and 25°C) on chlorophyll a (chl a) contents and cell size/volume of green alga Scenedesmus obliquus and blue green alga Microcystis aeruginosa. Long-term field data from Lake Taihu, a large, shallow eutrophic lake between Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces, China, was also used to evaluate the effect of temperature on the model between chl a and total phosphorus (TP). The chl a content of both algae increased with an increase in phosphorus concentration and temperature. Temperatures showed a significantly different effect on chl a content of S. obliquus at a phosphorus concentration of 10 mg l−1, whereas there was no significant difference at the two lower phosphorus levels. For M. aeruginosa, temperatures presented significantly different effects on the chl a contents at three phosphorus concentrations. Chl a content of neither alga presented an interaction between the nutrient and the temperature. Long-term field data from Lake Taihu also indicated that the addition of temperature to the model increased predictability of chl a by TP. The length/diameter and volume of both algae were greater at the lower temperature and phosphorus concentration. Moderate negative correlations were observed between algal size, volume, and chl a content. Our results suggest that phosphorus concentration and temperature could change chl a contents and size in species-specific algal cells and that temperature should be considered when building the model of TP and chl a concentration.  相似文献
