To determine the importance of nonhumoral drives to exercise hyperpnea in birds, we exercised adult White Pekin ducks on a treadmill (3 degrees incline) at 1.44 km X h-1 for 15 min during unidirectional artificial ventilation. Intrapulmonary gas concentrations and arterial blood gases could be regulated with this ventilation procedure while allowing ventilatory effort to be measured during both rest and exercise. Ducks were ventilated with gases containing either 4.0 or 5.0% CO2 in 19% O2 (balance N2) at a flow rate of 12 l X min-1. At that flow rate, arterial CO2 partial pressure (PaCO2) could be maintained within +/- 2 Torr of resting values throughout exercise. Arterial O2 partial pressure did not change significantly with exercise. Heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, and mean right ventricular pressure increased significantly during exercise. On the average, minute ventilation (used as an indicator of the output from the central nervous system) increased approximately 400% over resting levels because of an increase in both tidal volume and respiratory frequency. CO2-sensitivity curves were obtained for each bird during rest. If the CO2 sensitivity remained unchanged during exercise, then the observed 1.5 Torr increase in PaCO2 during exercise would account for only about 6% of the total increase in ventilation over resting levels. During exercise, arterial [H+] increased approximately 4 nmol X l-1; this increase could account for about 18% of the total rise in ventilation. We conclude that only a minor component of the exercise hyperpnea in birds can be accounted for by a humoral mechanism; other factors, possibly from muscle afferents, appear responsible for most of the hyperpnea observed in the running duck.  相似文献

Although exercise testing is useful in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, a rapid comprehensive method for measurement of ventilation and gas exchange has been limited to expensive complex computer-based systems. We devised a relatively inexpensive, technically simple, and clinically oriented exercise system built around a desktop calculator. This system automatically collects and analyzes data on a breath-by-breath basis. Our calculator system overcomes the potential inaccuracies of gas exchange measurement due to water vapor dilution and mismatching of expired flow and gas concentrations. We found no difference between the calculator-derived minute ventilation, CO2 production, O2 consumption, and respiratory exchange ratio and the values determined from simultaneous mixed expired gas collections in 30 constant-work-rate exercise studies. Both tabular and graphic displays of minute ventilation, CO2 production, O2 consumption, respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate, end-tidal O2 tension, end-tidal CO2 tension, and arterial blood gas value are included for aid in the interpretation of clinical exercise tests.  相似文献

The effects of ruminal concentrations of CO2 and O2 on glucose-stimulated and endogenous fermentation of the rumen isotrichid ciliate Dasytricha ruminantium were investigated. Principal metabolic products were lactic, butyric and acetic acids, H2 and CO2. Traces of propionic acid were also detected; formic acid present in the incubation supernatants was found to be a fermentation product of the bacteria closely associated with this rumen ciliate. 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed alanine as a minor product of glucose fermentation by D. ruminantium. Glucose uptake and metabolite formation rates were influenced by the headspace gas composition during the protozoal incubations. The uptake of exogenously supplied D-glucose was most rapid in the presence of O2 concentrations typical of those detected in situ (i.e. 1-3 microM). A typical ruminal gas composition (high CO2, low O2) led to increased butyrate and acetate formation compared to results obtained using O2-free N2. At a partial pressure of 66 kPa CO2 in N2, increased cytosolic flux to butyrate was observed. At low O2 concentrations (1-3 microM dissolved in the protozoal suspension) in the absence of CO2, increased acetate and CO2 formation were observed and D. ruminantium utilized lactate in the absence of extracellular glucose. The presence of both O2 and CO2 in the incubation headspaces resulted in partial inhibition of H2 production by D. ruminantium. Results suggest that at the O2 and CO2 concentrations that prevail in situ, the contribution made by D. ruminantium to the formation of ruminal volatile fatty acids is greater than previously reported, as earlier measurements were made under anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

Previous studies (J. Appl. Physiol. 58: 978-988 and 989-995, 1985) have shown both worsening ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) relationships and the development of diffusion limitation during heavy exercise at sea level and during hypobaric hypoxia in a chamber [fractional inspired O2 concentration (FIO2) = 0.21, minimum barometric pressure (PB) = 429 Torr, inspired O2 partial pressure (PIO2) = 80 Torr]. We used the multiple inert gas elimination technique to compare gas exchange during exercise under normobaric hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.11, PB = 760 Torr, PIO2 = 80 Torr) with earlier hypobaric measurements. Mixed expired and arterial respiratory and inert gas tensions, cardiac output, heart rate (HR), minute ventilation, respiratory rate (RR), and blood temperature were recorded at rest and during steady-state exercise in 10 normal subjects in the following order: rest, air; rest, 11% O2; light exercise (75 W), 11% O2; intermediate exercise (150 W), 11% O2; heavy exercise (greater than 200 W), 11% O2; heavy exercise, 100% O2 and then air; and rest 20 minutes postexercise, air. VA/Q inequality increased significantly during hypoxic exercise [mean log standard deviation of perfusion (logSDQ) = 0.42 +/- 0.03 (rest) and 0.67 +/- 0.09 (at 2.3 l/min O2 consumption), P less than 0.01]. VA/Q inequality was improved by relief of hypoxia (logSDQ = 0.51 +/- 0.04 and 0.48 +/- 0.02 for 100% O2 and air breathing, respectively). Diffusion limitation for O2 was evident at all exercise levels while breathing 11% O2.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The accuracy of a computerized metabolic system, using inspiratory and expiratory methods of measuring ventilation, was assessed in eight male subjects. Gas exchange was measured at rest and during five stages on a cycle ergometer. Pneumotachometers were placed on the inspired and expired side to measure inspired (VI) and expired ventilation (VE). The devices were connected to two systems sampling expired O(2) and CO(2) from a single mixing chamber. Simultaneously, the criterion (Douglas bag, or DB) method assessed VE and fractions of O(2) and CO(2) in expired gas (FE(O(2)) and FE(CO(2))) for subsequent calculation of O(2) uptake (VO(2)), CO(2) production (VCO(2)), and respiratory exchange ratio. Both systems accurately measured metabolic variables over a wide range of intensities. Though differences were found between the DB and computerized systems for FE(O(2)) (both inspired and expired systems), FE(CO(2)) (expired system only), and VO(2) (inspired system only), the differences were extremely small (FE(O(2)) = 0.0004, FE(CO(2)) = -0.0003, VO(2) = -0.018 l/min). Thus a computerized system, using inspiratory or expiratory configurations, permits extremely precise measurements to be made in a less time-consuming manner than the DB technique.  相似文献

The release rate (RR) of sulphur hexafluoride (SF(6)) gas from permeation tube in the rumen appears to be positively related with methane (CH(4)) emissions calculated using the SF(6) tracer technique. Gas samples of breath and ruminal headspace were collected simultaneously in order to evaluate the hypothesis that transactions of SF(6) in the rumen are the source for this relationship. Six non-lactating dairy cows fitted with rumen cannulae were subdivided into two groups and randomly assigned to a two-period crossover design to permeation tubes with low RR (LRR = 1.577 mg/day) or two-times higher RR (HRR = 3.147 mg/day) RR. The cows were fed limited amounts of maize silage (80% ad libitum) split into two meals (40% at 0800 h and 60% at 1600 h). Each period consisted of 3-day gas sampling. Immediately before the morning feed and then each hour over 8 h, ruminal gas samples (50 ml) were withdrawn through the cannula fitted with stoppers to prevent opening. Simultaneously, 8-h integrated breath gas samples were collected over the same period. Ratios of concentration of CH(4)/SF(6), CO(2)/SF(6) and CO(2)/CH(4) and emission estimates of CH(4) and CO(2) were calculated for each sample source using the SF(6) tracer technique principles. The LRR treatment yielded higher (P < 0.001) ruminal CH(4)/SF(6) (by 1.79 times) and CO(2)/SF(6) (by 1.90 times) ratios than the HRR treatment; however, these differences were lower than the 2.0 times difference expected from the RR between the LRR and HRR. Consequently, the LRR treatment was associated with lower (P < 0.01) ruminal emissions of CH(4) over the 8-h collection period than with the HRR treatment (+11%), a difference also confirmed by the breath samples (+11%). RR treatments did not differ (P = 0.53) in ruminal or breath CO(2) emissions; however, our results confirm that the SF(6) tracer seems inappropriate for CO(2) emissions estimation in ruminants. Irrespective of the RR treatment, breath samples yielded 8% to 9% higher CH(4) emission estimates than the ruminal samples (P = 0.01). The relationship between rumen and breath sources for CH(4) emissions was better for LRR than for HRR treatment, suggesting that tracer performance decreases with the highest RR of SF(6) tested in our study (3.1 mg/day). A hypothesis is discussed with regard to the mechanism responsible for the relationship between RR and CH(4) emission estimates. The use of permeation tubes with small range in RR is recommended in animal experiments to decrease variability in CH(4) emission estimates using the SF(6) tracer technique.  相似文献

The authors studied the question of the completeness of ventilation of an additional dead space in the form of a tube 3 cm in diameter and with a volume of 600 ml. Seven young volunteers were examined while breathing with and without the tube, seated at rest and during a two-grade exercise load on a bicycle ergometer. The criterion of ventilation of the tube was enlargement of the dead space by 600 ml during breathing through the tube. The functional dead space was always calculated from the tidal volume and the CO2 concentration in mixed expired air and in an end-tidal sample, using the Bohr equation. In every case, the tube was found to be completely ventilated by breathing, both under resting conditions and during exercise. In breathing during the bicycle exercise, the ratio of the functional dead space to tidal volume fell from 0.3 to 0.19 and a similar decrease was recorded in breathing through the tube.  相似文献

1. The specific activity of expired 14CO2 was measured at rest and during 90 min treadmill exercise following an initial intravenous injection of D[U-14C]glucose. 2. The rate of CO2 production rose 4.5-fold during exercise in cocks but only 2.5-fold in females. The mean respiratory quotient was close to unity at rest and during exercise. 3. Estimated glucose turnover rate rose approximately 3.5-fold during exercise in cocks. Turnover rate did not increase in hens but the fraction of the glucose turnover oxidized to provide energy for the working muscles was increased. 4. It is concluded that carbohydrate sources account for the major fraction of energy expenditure during exercise of this magnitude and duration.  相似文献

Pulmonary gas exchange in humans during exercise at sea level   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Previous studies have shown both worsening ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) relationships and the development of diffusion limitation during exercise at simulated altitude and suggested that similar changes could occur even at sea level. We used the multiple-inert gas-elimination technique to further study gas exchange during exercise in healthy subjects at sea level. Mixed expired and arterial respiratory and inert gas tensions, cardiac output, heart rate, minute ventilation, respiratory rate, and blood temperature were recorded at rest and during steady-state exercise in the following order: rest, minimal exercise (75 W), heavy exercise (300 W), heavy exercise breathing 100% O2, repeat rest, moderate exercise (225 W), and light exercise (150 W). Alveolar-to-arterial O2 tension difference increased linearly with O2 uptake (VO2) (6.1 Torr X min-1 X 1(-1) VO2). This could be fully explained by measured VA/Q inequality at mean VO2 less than 2.5 l X min-1. At higher VO2, the increase in alveolar-to-arterial O2 tension difference could not be explained by VA/Q inequality alone, suggesting the development of diffusion limitation. VA/Q inequality increased significantly during exercise (mean log SD of perfusion increased from 0.28 +/- 0.13 at rest to 0.58 +/- 0.30 at VO2 = 4.0 l X min-1, P less than 0.01). This increase was not reversed by 100% O2 breathing and appeared to persist at least transiently following exercise. These results confirm and extend the earlier suggestions (8, 21) of increasing VA/Q inequality and O2 diffusion limitation during heavy exercise at sea level in normal subjects and demonstrate that these changes are independent of the order of performance of exercise.  相似文献

Ventilation, heart rate, and arterial blood gas tensions were measured at rest and during incremental exercise in 10 patients with emphysema after intravenous placebo or 7 mg metoprolol. Metoprolol reduced heart rate by 14% (P less than 0.001) and ventilation by 11% (P less than 0.01), but there was no significant difference in arterial O2 or CO2 tension (Pao2 and PaCO2, respectively). Metoprolol increased the time to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer (P less than 0.05) but did not improve the 12-min walking distance. A double-blind randomized crossover comparison of 4 wk treatment with atenolol (100 mg/day), metoprolol (100 mg/day), or matched placebo was performed in 12 patients with emphysema. Both beta-adrenoceptor antagonists reduced resting heart rate by 33% (P less than 0.001) and resting minute ventilation by 11% (P less than 0.025). There was no change in resting or exercise Pao2 or Paco2. During steady-state exercise on a cycle ergometer, atenolol and metoprolol reduced ventilation by 14 and 4%, respectively. This was accompanied by 11 and 5% reductions in O2 consumption (P less than 0.05) and 13 and 6% falls in CO2 production (P less than 0.05). There were no significant changes in tests of exercise tolerance, but forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced vital capacity were reduced during beta 1-adrenergic blockade. beta 1-Blocking drugs reduce hyperventilation in emphysema by reducing pulmonary gas exchange without a change in arterial blood gas tensions. Increased airflow obstruction prevents this reduction being of therapeutic value.  相似文献

The method of el-Shazly and Hungate for measuring gas production in rumen contents was slightly modified and used throughout this investigation. The variation in the fermentation rates due to samples collected separately from a sheep fed on hay was less than 2%. When samples obtained through a stomach tube were compared with samples collected through the rumen fistula, the variation was about 3%. The rates of gas and acid production were approximately similar in samples obtained from the rumen at the same time when no sodium bicarbonate was added. During in vitro incubation of whole ruminal contents, there was a highly significant correlation between the net growth rate values (obtained by using fermentation capacity as an index) and the change in concentration of viable rumen bacteria or total ciliate protozoa.  相似文献

This paper reports a new system for the continuous measurements of respiratory gas exchange in ventilated subjects. It involves mixing some of the inspired gas with all of the expired gas and withdrawing the mixture at a constant rate through a dry gas meter that measures the flow. The inspired gas and expired gas mixtures are sampled and O2 and CO2 concentrations measured with a paramagnetic gas analyzer and a capnograph, respectively, to an accuracy of 0.01%. Evidence is presented to confirm the necessary stability and sensitivity of these instruments. It is possible to use the system with high inspired O2 concentrations, with ventilators where there is incomplete separation of inspired and expired gas, and in the presence of intermittent mandatory ventilation, positive end-expiratory pressure, and continuous airway pressure. The system was compared with the N2-dilution method and with the collection of expired gas in a Douglas bag in dog experiments and with patients in the intensive therapy unit. Excellent correlation between these methods was found in all circumstances.  相似文献

We have tested the response of 28 subjects to a three-stage ergometer test, with loads adjusted to 45, 60, and 75% of maximum aerobic power following ozone exposure. The subjects were exposed to one of 0.37, 0.50, or 0.75 ppm O3 for 2 h either at rest (R) or while exercising intermittently (IE) (15 min rest alternated with 15 min exercise at approximately 50 W. sufficient to increase VE by a factor of 2.5). Also, all subjects completed a mock exposure VE, respiratory frequency (fR), mixed expired PO2 and PCO2, and electrocardiogram were monitored continuously during the exercise test. Neither submaximal exercise oxygen consumption nor minute ventilation was significantly altered following any level of ozone exposure. The major response noted was an increase in respiratory frequency during exercise following ozone exposure. The increase in fR was closely correlated with the total dose of ozone (r = 0.98) and was accompanied by a decrease in tidal volume (r = 0.91) so that minute volume was unchanged. It is concluded that through its irritant properties, ozone modifies the normal ventilatory response to exercise, and that this effect is dose dependent.  相似文献

In athletic animals the spleen induces acute polycythemia by dynamic contraction that releases red blood cells into the circulation in response to increased O(2) demand and metabolic stress; when energy demand is relieved, the polycythemia is rapidly reversed by splenic relaxation. We have shown in adult foxhounds that splenectomy eliminates exercise-induced polycythemia, thereby reducing peak O(2) uptake and lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL(CO)) as well as exaggerating preexisting DL(CO) impairment imposed by pneumonectomy (Dane DM, Hsia CC, Wu EY, Hogg RT, Hogg DC, Estrera AS, Johnson RL Jr. J Appl Physiol 101: 289-297, 2006). To examine whether the postsplenectomy reduction in DL(CO) leads to abnormalities in O(2) diffusion, ventilation-perfusion inequality, or hemodynamic function, we studied these animals via the multiple inert gas elimination technique at rest and during exercise at a constant workload equivalent to 50% or 80% of peak O(2) uptake while breathing 21% and 14% O(2) in balanced order. From rest to exercise after splenectomy, minute ventilation was significantly elevated with respect to O(2) uptake compared with exercise before splenectomy; cardiac output, O(2) delivery, and mean pulmonary and systemic arterial blood pressures were 10-20% lower, while O(2) extraction was elevated with respect to O(2) uptake. Ventilation-perfusion inequality was unchanged, but O(2) diffusing capacities of lung (DL(O2)) and peripheral tissue during exercise were lower with respect to cardiac output postsplenectomy by 32% and 25%, respectively. The relationship between DL(O2) and DL(CO) was unchanged by splenectomy. We conclude that the canine spleen regulates both convective and diffusive O(2) transport during exercise to increase maximal O(2) uptake.  相似文献

Our objectives were to determine 1) the effects of increased respiratory dead space (VD) on the ventilatory response to exercise and 2) whether changes in the ventilatory response are due to changes in chemoreceptor feedback (rest to exercise) vs. changes in the feedforward exercise stimulus. Steady-state ventilation (VI) and arterial blood gas responses to mild or moderate hyperoxic exercise in goats were compared with and without increased VD. Responses were compared using a simple mathematical model with the following assumptions: 1) steady state, 2) linear CO2 chemoreceptor feedback, 3) linear feedforward exercise stimulus proportional to CO2 production (VCO2) and characterized by an exercise gain (Gex), and 4) additive exercise stimulus and CO2 feedback producing the system gain (Gsys = delta VI/delta VCO2). Model predictions at constant Gex [assuming VD-to-tidal volume (VT) ratio independent of VCO2] are that increased VD/VT will 1) increase arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) and VI at rest and 2) increase Gsys via changes in chemoreceptor feedback due to a small increase in the PaCO2 vs. VCO2 slope. Experimental results indicate that increased VD increased VD/VT, PaCO2, and VI at rest and increased Gsys during exercise. However, measurable changes in the PaCO2 vs. VCO2 slope occurred only at high VD/VT or running speeds. Gex was estimated at each VD for each goat by using the model in conjunction with experimental measurements. With 0.2 liter VD, Gex increased 40% (P less than 0.01); with 0.6 liter VD, Gex increased 110% between 0 and 2.4 km/h and 5% grade (P less than 0.01) but not between 2.4 and 4.8 km/h. Thus, Gex is increased by VD through a limited range. In goats, increases in Gsys with increased VD result from increases in both Gex and CO2 chemoreceptor feedback. These results are consistent with other experimental treatments that increase the exercise ventilatory response, maintaining constant relative PaCO2 regulation, and suggest that a common mechanism linked to resting ventilatory drive modulates Gex.  相似文献

Six subjects pedaled a stationary cycle ergometer to exhaustion on three separate occasions while breathing gas mixtures of 17, 21, or 60% O2 in N2. Each subject rode for 3 min at work rates of 60, 90, 105 W, followed by 15-W increases every 3 min until exhaustion. Inspired and expired gas fractions, ventilation (V), heart rate, and blood lactate were measured. O2 uptake (VO2) and CO2 output (VCO2) were calculated for the last minute of each work rate; blood samples were drawn during the last 5 s. "Break points" for lactate, V, VCO2, V/VO2, and expired oxygen fraction (FEO2) were mathematically determined. VO2 was not significantly different at any work rate among the three different conditions. Nor did maximal VO2 differ significantly among the three treatments (P greater than 0.05). Lactate concentrations were significantly lower during hyperoxia and significantly higher during hypoxia compared with normoxia. Lactate values at exhaustion were not significantly different among the three treatments. Four subjects were able to work for a longer period of time during hyperoxic breathing. The variations in lactate accumulation as reported in this study cannot be explained on the basis of differences in VO2. The results of this research lend support to the hypothesis that differences in the performance of subjects breathing altered fractions of inspired oxygen may be caused by differences in lactate (or H+) accumulation.  相似文献

Studies were performed to determine the effects of aging on the ventilatory responsiveness to two known respiratory stimulants, inhaled CO2 and exercise. Although explanation of the physiological mechanisms underlying development of exercise hyperpnea remains elusive, there is much circumstantial evidence that during exercise, however mediated, ventilation is coupled to CO2 production. Thus matched groups of young and elderly subjects were studied to determine the relationship between increasing ventilation and increasing CO2 production (VCO2) during steady-state exercise and the change in their minute ventilation in response to progressive hypercapnia during CO2 rebreathing. We found that the slope of the ventilatory response to hypercapnia was depressed in elderly subjects when compared with the younger control group (delta VE/delta PCO2 = 1.64 +/- 0.21 vs. 2.44 +/- 0.40 l X min-1 X mmHg-1, means +/- SE, respectively). In contrast, the slope of the relationship between ventilation and CO2 production during exercise in the elderly was greater than that of younger subjects (delta VE/delta VCO2 = 29.7 +/- 1.19 vs. 25.3 +/- 1.54, means +/- SE, respectively), as was minute ventilation at a single work load (50 W) (32.4 +/- 2.3 vs. 25.7 +/- 1.54 l/min, means +/- SE, respectively). This increased ventilation during exercise in the elderly was not produced by arterial O2 desaturation, and increased anaerobiasis did not play a role. Instead, the increased ventilation during exercise seems to compensate for increased inefficiency of gas exchange such that exercise remains essentially isocapnic. In conclusion, in the elderly the ventilatory response to hypercapnia is less than in young subjects, whereas the ventilatory response to exercise is greater.  相似文献

We studied the role of central command mediation of exercise hyperpnea by comparing the ventilatory and arterial CO2 partial pressure (PaCO2) responses to voluntary (ExV) and electrically induced (ExE) muscle contractions in normal, awake human subjects. We hypothesized that if central command signals are critical to a normal ventilatory response, then ExE should cause a slower ventilatory response resulting in hypercapnia at the onset of exercise. ExE was induced through surface electrodes placed over the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. ExE and ExV produced leg extension (40/min) against a spring load that increased CO2 production (VCO2) 100-1,000 ml/min above resting level. PaCO2 and arterial pH during work transitions and in the steady state did not differ significantly from rest (P greater than 0.05) or between ExE and ExV. The temporal pattern of ventilation, tidal volume, breathing frequency, and inspired and expired times, and the ventilation-VCO2 relationship were similar between ExE and ExV. We conclude that since central command was reduced and/or eliminated by ExE, central command is not requisite for the precise matching of alveolar ventilation to increases in VCO2 during low-intensity muscle contractions.  相似文献

Four sheep, each prepared with a rumen fistula and reetrant cannula in the proximal duodenum, were used to study the effects of ruminal administration of nitrilotriacetic acid on solubilities of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron in rumen and duodenal digesta. The sheep received a pelleted diet and were dosed with 0, 300, 600 and 1200 microgram of nitrilotriacetic acid per gram of diet via the rumen fistula. Higher concentration of soluble zinc, manganese, and iron but not copper, were found in the rumen of the sheep when they were dosed with nitrilotriacetic acid. The concentrations increased with increasing dose of the acid. However, only the solubilty of iron was increased in the duodenal digesta. Concentrations of soluble zinc and manganese in the rumen increased, whereas copper decreased, during the first 2 h after feeding. The pattern was reversed thereafter. Changes in the concentrations of soluble during 6 h afther feeding were comparatively small. It is concluded that the solubilty of iron in the stomach of sheep is increased by ruminal administration of nitrilotriacetic acid.  相似文献

The ruminal degradation of RNA in rye grass (Lolium perenne) was studied using the bag method. A non-lactating cow (BW 550 kg) fitted with a rumen cannula was used and fed twice daily at maintenance level with a chopped grass hay-based ration containing 30% ground barley. Rye grass, labelled during growth by fertilization with 15N2-urea (9.5 atom% 15N, 20 g N/m2), was cut at seven stages of growth and maturity and freeze-dried. RNA-N represented 6 to 17% of total N. Labelled grass samples (milled to 5.0 mm screen, 5.0+/-0.1 g DM) were incubated in polyester bags (100 x 200 mm, pore size 50 microm) in the rumen for periods of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 48 h. Data of N and RNA disappearances from the bags were fitted to an exponential equation to estimate parameters of degradation. The effective degradability of RNA in the rumen averaged 90+/-4%, for N it was 11% units lower (P < 0.001). Degradability of RNA was correlated to that of N (R2 = 0.92). Degradability of RNA (R2 = 0.96) and N (R2 = 0.93) decreased with increasing fibre content of grass. Increasing the fibre content by 1% diminished the degradability of RNA and N by 1.1% units and 2.4% units, respectively (P < 0.001). Assuming a microbial protein synthesis in the rumen of 150 g/kg DOM, a N: RNA ratio of 1:1.35 in rumen microbes and a rumen outflow rate of 0.06 h(-1), a model calculation indicates that about 9 to 19% of duodenal RNA are of dietary origin in animals fed grass. This should be taken into account for the calculation of microbial N on the basis of RNA as marker.  相似文献
