  • 3.3. Results show that capric and lauric acids are the predominant fatty acids of both cacti.
  • 4.4. Fatty acid chain length exhibits a differential effect on larval viability with caprylic acid (Q) having the greatest and myristic acid (C14) having the least effect.
  • 5.5. Drosophila mojavensis is more tolerant of free fatty acids than D. nigrospiracula, and this partly explains the ability of D. mojavensis to utilize agria and organpipe cacti.

  • 1.1. The oxygen consumption of red and green Carcinus in normoxic and hypoxic sea water was determined, using an oxygen electrode in a sealed respirometer.
  • 2.2. The red crabs had significantly higher “excited” oxygen uptake rates and a lower ability to compensate for hypoxia than the green crabs.
  • 3.3. Red Carcinus display an emersion response to declining oxygen at lower oxygen tensions than the green crabs.
  • 4.4. Mortality of red crabs exposed to prolonged anoxia was much greater.
  • 5.5. The relationship of these findings to the zonation of the two colour forms on the shore is discussed.

  • 2.2. In F. lemani, the Dufour gland contains branched, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (C9–C19) and two farnesenes.
  • 3.3. The two species were distinguished chiefly by the presence of a relatively large proportion of farnesene in F. fusca, with very little homofarnesene and by contrast, little farnesene but much more homofarnesene in F. lemani.
  • 4.4. The contents of the Dufour gland can be used as a chemotaxonomic clue to distinguish between the species.

  • 1.1. The fatty acid composition of the triglyceride fraction of mink milk sampled during mid-lactation (day 28 post partum) from two nursing mink was compared to that of plasma samples and to the fatty acid composition of the feed rations used.
  • 2.2. Chemical analysis of the triglyceride composition of mink milk demonstrated only minute concentrations of fatty acids with a chain length below C14.
  • 3.3. The saturated C16:0- and C18:0-unit fatty acids in mink milk made up for 24–40% of the total amount of fatty acids extracted, the remainder being represented by mono and polyunsaturated long-chain (C16-C24) fatty acids.
  • 4.4. Preliminary in vitro experiments proved the incorporation of14C-labelled glucose, acetate or palmitate into triacylglycerols in cultures of mink mammary tissue to be linear for at least 2 hr.
  • 5.5. The in vitro capacity for de novo fatty acid synthesis in mink mammary tissue using 14C-labelled glucose or acetate was low, i.e. ranging from 0.096–0.109 nmol/g (fresh tissue)/min, and amounted to only about 5% of that obtained in the case of [14C]palmitic acid incubation.
  • 6.6. Following 14C-labeIled acetic or palmitic acid incubation of mink mammary tissue neither desaturation nor chain elongation was observed.
  • 7.7. In response to long-term feeding on rations with two different sources of animal fat (F = fish oil or L = lard) the influence of compositional changes in dietary neutral lipids on the fatty acid composition of the lipids of mink milk is discussed.

  • 2.2. The active incorporation of the label in 20:2 non-methylene-interrupted dienoic (NMID) fatty acids was found.
  • 3.3. Acetate incorporation patterns and specific radioactivity of mussel acids suggest that 22:2Δ7,13 and 22:2/gD7,15 arose by C2 elongation of 20:2Δ5,11 and 20:2Δ5,13 respectively.

  • 1.1. Females, copepodid stages V and IV of Calanus finmarchicus were collected in Fram Strait area of the Arctic and in the northern North Sea to compare their lipid composition.
  • 2.2. For the comparison only copepods were considered which contained more than 8% of 18:4 fatty acid and high amounts of wax esters to exclude seasonal and spatial variabilities and different reproductive status of females.
  • 3.3. Animals are heavier in the Fram Strait area than in the North Sea with similar lipid proportion of dry weight and wax ester proportion of total lipid.
  • 4.4. Only some statistical significant differences exist between the fatty acid and alcohol compositions. The levels of 16:0 acid and alcohol and of 22:1 alcohol are higher and of 20:1 acid and alcohol are lower in the North Sea than in the Arctic.

  • 1.1. In eels captured in Roskilde Fjord in 1972 and 1975, a specifically enhanced synthesis was found from 14C-acetate of 14C-labelled mono-unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1 and C18:1) relative to saturated fatty acids (C16:0 and C18:0) in sea water 4 days after irradiation (10 Gy, 60Co).
  • 2.2. Corresponding experiments in 1976 and 1982 showed rather the opposite: irradiation resulted in more 14C-labelled saturated fatty acids relative to unsaturated fatty acids, both in fresh and sea water.
  • 3.3. The latter effect was less marked than that in 1972 and 1975, but still statistically clearly significant.

  • 1.1. The distribution of ceramide aminoethylphosphonate (CAEP) in microsomal membranes obtained from different tissues of the bivalve mollusc Diplodon delodontus was determined.
  • 2.2. The concentration of CAEP reached from 9 to 19% of the total microsomal polar lipids, depending on the kind of tissue.
  • 3.3. Palmitic acid was the main fatty acid in the ceramide moiety, followed by stearic and eicosamonoenoic acids.
  • 4.4. Artificial membranes were prepared with microsomal phospholipids or phospholipids plus sterols, with and without the addition of CAEP.
  • 5.5. It was shown that the phosphonate confers minor mobility to the membranes. This effect is more effective when the membrane contains the natural sterols and the phospholipids are unsaturated.

The lipid components of three animals, the rock crab Nectocarcinus integrifons, the rock flathead Platycephalus laevigatus and the southern garfish Hyporhamphus melanochir, feeding in the seagrass beds at Corner Inlet, Victoria, Australia have been examined in detail in order to provide further information on seagrass community structure.
  • 2.2. Biological marker compounds detected within animal gut content material were used to recognize dietary sources and then utilized by community members.
  • 3.3. Both H. melanochir and N. integrifons have been shown to ingest and to varying degrees incorporate seagrass lipid material, thus further confirming the importance of seagrass carbon in the Corner Inlet environment.
  • 4.4. The southern sea garfish H. melanochir is observed to remove C18 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) from ingested seagrass material.
  • 5.5. Seagrass sterols are altered during incorporation into the lipids of this fish.
  • 6.6. Lipid-rich digestive juices play a role in the digestive processes of all three animals.
  • 7.7. Components tentatively identified as (NMI) (non-methylene interrupted) fatty acids have been detected in the lipids of the garfish H. melanochir and the crab N. integrifons.
  • 8.8. The fecal material of all three animals represent possible sources of these lipids (NMI acids) in Corner Inlet sediments.
  • 9.9. Based on lipid compositional data, N. integrifons feeds on Posidonia australis detritus and associated epiphyte material.
  • 10.10. The removal of both plant and epibiota cellular lipids along the digestive tract of the crab was observed, although structural components such as long chain mono- and α,ω-dicarboxylic acids, which have been previously recognized as seagrass marker lipids are not directly absorbed.

  • 1.1. The malate dehydrogenase (MHD) activity from the ribbed mussel gill is polymorphic with two distinct mitochondrial forms (M1 and M2) and five forms that could be resolved from cytosolic extracts (C1 to C5) by DEAE-cellulose chromatography and starch gel electrophoresis.
  • 2.2. Two of the cytosolic forms (C3 and C4) may represent interchangeable conformational states.
  • 3.3. With kinetic analysis there appear to be three distinct cytosolic forms (C1, C2 and C3–C4), with C2 possibly behaving as a heterodimer.
  • 4.4. The identity of C5 is uncertain.
  • 5.5. The forms isolated from the mitochondria (M1 and M2) exhibited lower apparent Kms for oxaloacetate (OAA) than the cytosolic forms.
  • 6.6. For all isozymic forms, the apparent Kms for OAA increased as the pH increased between pH 6 and 9
  • 7.7. Increasing the salt concentration raised the Km for OAA for all forms.
  • 8.8. The mMDHs were more sensitive to inhibition by NaCl than the cMDHs.
  • 9.9. Representative cMDH (C1) and mMDH (M2) isozymes exhibited substrate inhibition by high concentrations of OAA with the mMDH possessing lower Kis for substrate inhibition than the cMDH at each pH tested.
  • 10.10. Differences and similarities in Km app. for OAA at the different pHs and salt concentrations indicated that C1, C2 and C3–C4 and C5 were distinct forms, that M1 and M2 were distinct but very similar to each other, and that C1, C2, C3–C4 and C5 were distinct from M1 and M2.

  • 1.1. Oxygen equilibrium curves were measured on trout red blood cell suspensions at pH 7.8 and 8.4 at 15, 20 and 25 C. Normal red cells and red cells that had been depleted of their ATP content were used.
  • 2.2. The equilibrium data were fitted to the Adair's model and the enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) changes for the first and fourth steps of oxygenation and for overall oxygenation were calculated from the temperature dependencies of the Adair constants.
  • 3.3. For normal red blood cells, the apparent heat for the first oxygenation step, δh1, is close to zero.
  • 4.4. Temperature insensitivity of this step at physiological pH, combined with a large pH dependence, probably denotes a property of Hb4, the Root effect Hb of trout blood.
  • 5.5. At pH 7.8, ΔH4 is about —4kcal/mol, a small value which may be attributed to the large release of Bohr protons that occurs at the last oxygenation step and corresponds to an endothermic process which opposes to the exothermic oxygenation of the haem.
  • 6.6. The ΔH4 value appears to have a large influence on the enthalpy for overall oxygenation.
  • 7.7. Results for ATP-free red cells are consistent with a mere increase in the intracellular pH and suggest that ATP has no specific effect at and above pHi ~ 7.7.
  • 8.8. Effects of temperature and pH on trout red blood cell isotherms emphasize the primary importance of the major component of trout blood, namely Hb4, in trout blood functional properties.

  • 1.1. Annelid and molluscan red blood cells (RBC) may de differentiated metabolically from vertebrate RBC by their increased permeability to substrate, their magnitude of amino acid catabolism and their higher aerobic metabolism.
  • 2.2. At 22°C, Glycera and Noetia RBC oxidize glucose and glutamate to CO2 without accumulation of either d- or l-lactate. By comparison, the oxidation of glutamate by rat and chicken RBC is negligible at this temperature despite its incorporation into the cells.
  • 3.3. At 37°C, chicken RBC oxidize glutamate at a rate 4 times greater than at 22°C, with oxygen uptake still lower than that in Noetia RBC at 32°C. At 37°C, rat RBC do not increase their oxidation of glutamate above that at 22°C, but oxygen uptake increases to slightly more than half that of chicken RBC.
  • 4.4. Our finclings indicate that RBC of these two invertebrate species have both a higher aerobic metabolism and lower anerobic capacity than vertebrate RBC.
  • 5.5. Moreover, the annelid and molluscan RBC have a relatively lower activity of the pentose phosphate (PPO4) pathway than vertebrate RBC, as evidenced by their higher thermal sensitivity of oxygen uptake and their higher *C1O2/*C6O2 isotope ratio.

  • 2.2. Some quantitative differences of the compositions were estimated for cuticular and internal hydrocarbons.
  • 3.3. The n-alkanes in the samples are mostly odd chain lengths from 23 to 33 carbon atoms. In turn, the branched hydrocarbons consist of even carbon numbers ranging from C26 to C32, but the branching points are situated on the odd carbon numbers.
  • 4.4. There are similarities in the n-alkanes patterns extracted from khapra beetle and wheat grains, the latter of which are the natural nutrition of this pest.

  • 1.1. Glycerolphosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) was solubilized from the rat liver mitochondrial membranes using sodium cholate. Dithiothreitol was necessary to stabilize the solubilized enzyme on storage.
  • 2.2. Unlike the enzyme in situ in mitochondrial membranes, the solubilized mitochondrial GPAT was susceptible to inhibition by N-ethylmaleimide; a property more characteristic of the distinct microsomal form of GPAT.
  • 3.3. Solubilized mitochondrial GPAT retained its very high preference for saturated acyl-CoA substrate (palmitoyl-CoA) and had no activity whatever with any tested concentration of the unsaturated substrate oleoyl-CoA.
  • 4.4. Solubilization increased the affinity of mitochondrial GPAT for palmitoyl-CoA whilst decreasing the Km for glycerol phosphate.
  • 5.5. After separation of liver mitochondrial outer and inner membranes and estimation of cross-contamination by appropriate markers it was concluded that the mitochondrial inner membrane contains significant GPAT activity. This was established with preparations from fed, 48 hr-starved and streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

  • 2.2. During exercise, oxygen uptake increased about 3.5-fold and returned to pre-exercise level within 15 min.
  • 3.3. This exercise-stress resulted in no plasma acidosis and in no swelling of the erythrocytes.
  • 4.4. Ventilatory water flow rate increased 6-fold, whereas cardiac output increased 2-fold. Hence the ventilation-perfusion ratio increased during exercise.
  • 5.5. During exercise, arterial O2 content (CaO2) increased due to increases in O2 tension (PaO2), O2 saturation of hemoglobin (SaO2) and hemoglobin concentration (Hb). On the other hand, Pv̄O2 and Sv̄O2 remained at the resting levels but Cv̄O2 slightly increased due to an increase in Hb.
  • 6.6. Arterial-venous O2 difference (CaO2-Cv̄O2) increased by 38%, which was met by a much greater increase in CaO2 than Cv̄O2.
