  • 1.1. The effect of regular handling on fear reactions was investigated in mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) by exposing six hand-reared and four wild ducks to an approaching human being and recording heart rates with an external ECG device.
  • 2.2. All ducks reacted to the approach with tachycardia, but the response was significantly less in tame birds.
  • 3.3. Hand-reared females showed less response than males. No sex-linked differences were apparent in the wild ducks.
  • 4.4. Decreasing responses throughout the experiments were only found in tame birds.
  • 5.5. Fear or stress reactions can apparently be diminished through habituation induced by regular handling.

  • 1.1. Five adult, female alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) were captured at night during the breeding season, and a blood sample taken within 5 min of capture.
  • 2.2. The alligators were physically restrained (tied to boards) and additional blood samples taken at 4, 8, 12, 16, 22, 28, 38, and 48 hr after capture. After the last blood sample was collected the animals were released.
  • 3.3. Plasma estradiol-17β and corticosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay. Estradiol declined significantly from initial values by 22 hr post capture, but remained unchanged for 48 hr.
  • 4.4. Plasma corticosterone rose from a mean of 0.8 ng/ml at capture to 12.6 ng/ml after 4 hr. Corticosterone continued to rise up to 16 hr then declined after 22 hr. From 28 until 48 hr corticosterone again increased significantly.
  • 5.5. These results demonstrate that acute stress in female alligators causes significant suppression of plasma estradiol and a biphasic pattern of corticosterone secretion.

  • 1.1. American crocodiles (C. acutus) weighing less than 200 g are unable to grow when kept in 35 ppt sea water in the laboratory. Yet paradoxically there are some highly saline areas in south Florida where rapid growth occurs. It is possible that these conflicting observations can be reconciled by behavioral osmoregulation of young crocodiles.
  • 2.2. Hatching occurs during the rainy season and small crocodiles may drink from the brackish “lens” available during and after rainfall.
  • 3.3. Using a weekly regime of alternating exposure to 35 ppt (6 days) and 4 ppt (12–24 hr), it has been demonstrated that growth of small crocodiles occurs. Feeding takes place primarily when brackish water is available. Salinities as high as 18 ppt were drunk when crocodiles were dehydrated by 15–20% of initial mass.
  • 4.4. C. acutus and Alligator have a rather low rate of water efflux in sea water (0.2ml/100g-hr).
  • 5.5. Sodium influx in sea water of C. acutus is low, but higher than efflux. Thus there is no evidence yet for a significant role of the lingual salt glands in sodium excretion.
  • 6.6. The major adaptations to saline water of hatchling C. acutus are a low intake of sodium, an ability to selectively drink water of lower salinities, and to grow very rapidly (within 3–4 months) to a size much more tolerant of immersion in 35 ppt sea water.

  • 1.1. Our knowledge of parasite born e diseases of cultured marine fish is restricted by the limited extent of practiced mariculture.
  • 2.2. Several parasites, pathogenic to fish including capsaloid, microcotylid and diclidophoran monogeneans and caligid copepods are ubiquitous in mariculture systems in diverse species of fish and geographical regions.
  • 3.3. The alga Amyloodinium ocellatum and the ciliated protozoan Cryptocaryon irritons are not as ubiquitous, but nevertheless present the most serious risk to farmed fish of most species due to their high pathogenicity, fecundity and resistance to conventional means of control.
  • 4.4. Infections in maricultured fish are dominated by monoxenous parasites. Occurence of heteroxenous parasites is restricted by their requirement for additional hosts to maintain transmission.
  • 5.5. Cage culture allows free exchange of infection between caged and native fishes; in inshore systems infections have to be introduced primarily from external sources.
  • 6.6. Water supply does not appear to be an efficient route of entry of infection into culture systems; parasites are introduced either by wild fry or wild breeders collected into the system, or with wild fish infiltrating via water supply or drainage.
  • 7.7. Adverse growth conditions are the most common circumstances in outbreak of epizooites. Over-crowding does not appear to promote primarily epizooites, its impact is indirect by contributing to the deterioration of the growth conditions.
  • 8.8. Epizooites are likely to occur also in juvenile, immunologically naive fish as well as following introduction of parasites into unexperienced fish population.
  • 9.9. Control has been implemented thus far through an empirical approach. Recent research is geared towards the development of methodology specifically designed to the needs of mariculture.

  • 1.1. Slow-growing juvenile Nile crocodiles were injected with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH) once a week for 6 weeks and then re-treated after 4 weeks.
  • 2.2. The feed intake of the treated crocodiles was 26 g/kg/meal during the three periods, while the intakes of the controls were 15, 20 and 2 g/kg.
  • 3.3. The treated gained 2.3 and 0.9%/week in weight during the first and second injection period and the feed conversion efficiencies were 28 and 13%. The controls lost weight.
  • 4.4. The treated animals grew at rates of 0.98 and 0.43%/week during the first and the second injection period.
  • 5.5. Bovine GH enhances growth in juvenile crocodiles and seems to have less adverse effects than human GH.

  • 3.3. Cod, having white flesh, deposit ketocarotenoids in the eggs, preferably astaxanthin.
  • 4.4. Canthaxanthin can replace astaxanthin in the eggs, but astaxanthin appears to be deposited preferentially when both carotenoids are present in the diet.
  • 5.5. The isomer distribution of (3S, 3′S):(3R, 3′S, meso):(3R, 3′R) astaxanthin in the eggs reflected the isomer composition of the diet.
  • 6.6. Echinenone, 4′-hydroxyechinenone, adonixanthin and zeaxanthin encountered in cod eggs may represent reductive metabolites of canthaxanthin and astaxanthin.

Growth, survival, ammonia excretion and Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) were assessed in the supralittoral isopod Ligia pallasii eating chemical diets with differing proportions of d- and l-amino acids. Growth and survival decreased in direct proportion to increasing dietary intake of d-amino acids.
  • 2.2. Survival on diets with greater than 50% content of d-amino acids (based on total amino acids in diet) was lower than that expected based on previous work, suggesting a deleterious effect of the d-isomers.
  • 3.3. Ammonia excretion and SDA correlated negatively with increasing dietary content of d-amino acids.
  • 4.4. The general conclusion is that d-amino acids play no role in anabolic or energy metabolism in Ligia, and that poor performance at higher dietary levels of d-amino acids may relate to their interference with transport pathways for the normal l-forms.

  • 1.1. The carnitine-responsive mutant yeast, Candida pintolopesii ATCC 26014 and the wild type strain (ATCC 22987) were used to investigate the role of carnitine and the carnitine acetyltransferase system.
  • 2.2. [3H]l-Carnitine, supplied to the cells, was incorporated into acetylcamitine and [14C]pantothenate was incorporated into CoA and its derivatives.
  • 3.3. Both bioautography and quantitative assays indicated that the relative amounts of CoA and acetylCoA were very different in the mutant and wild type cells.
  • 4.4. The wild type yeast maintained an acetylCoA/CoA ratio of 0.33 ± 0.09 indicating that most of the CoA in the cell is in the free CoA form. Carnitine was not required to establish this ratio nor did its presence lower it further.
  • 5.5. In contrast, the mutant cells contained a high acetylCoA/CoA ratio (12.8 ± 3.0).
  • 6.6. In the mutant cells, carnitine lowered the ratio by decreasing the intracellular acetylCoA concentration and releasing free CoA.
  • 7.7. These data indicated that wild type yeast possess an effective mechanism that is not related to the CAT system for regulating the acetylCoA/CoA ratio.
  • 8.8. This mechanism appears to be lacking in the mutant. The CAT system decreased the acetylCoA/CoA ratio in the mutant cells but not to the value which is found in the wild type strain.
  • 9.9. In both stains of Candida pintolopesii, in the presence of carnitine, an acetylcamitine pool can be created whose concentration exceeds that of acetylCoA.
  • 10.10. The intracellular apparent equilibrium constant (Kapp) for carnitine acetyltransferase for wild type Candida pintolopesii ATCC 22987 was 0.73 ± 0.12, close to the established value of 0.6, indicating that the CAT system ran close to equilibrium.
  • 11.11. The Kapp for the CAT system of the carnitine-responsive mutant yeast was 7.7 ± 1.7 indicating that this reaction was not at equilibrium.

  • 1.1. The effects on growth of supplementing the medium with (n-3) and (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were investigated in Atlantic salmon (AS) and turbot (TF) cell lines.
  • 2.2. Neither cell line grew in the absence of serum, and addition of increasing percentages of serum resulted in graded increases in cell growth in both cell lines.
  • 3.3. The growth of AS cells was stimulated by supplementing the medium with both (n-6)PUFA and (n-3)PUFA at 5–25 μM, especially 18:3(n-3) and 20:5(n-3).
  • 4.4. Intermediate concentrations (15–20 μM) of 18:2(n-6) and 18:3(n-3) increased cell growth in TF cells, although only after 8 days in culture.
  • 5.5. In contrast, both (n-3) and (n-6)PUFA at 25 μM tended to inhibit the growth of TF cells, and in longer incubations caused cell death.
  • 6.6. The inhibition of TF cell growth rate and, in particular, the cell death induced by 25 μM PUFA could be abolished by the addition of vitamin E to the medium.

  • 1.1. Vitellogenin (VG) was isolated and purified from the hemolymph of female American cockroaches.
  • 2.2. The purification method used in this study comprises two steps: the first step is based on the method originally developed for purifying lipophorin from hemolymph, and the second step is the separation of VG from lipophorin by a KBr density gradient ultracentrifugation.
  • 3.3. The purified VG was characterized according to molecular weight, substructure, shape and size, and lipid composition.
  • 4.4. The VG molecule is almost globular in shape with the diameter of about 15.5 nm and is indistinguishable from lipophorin in shape and size.
  • 5.5. The native molecular weight determined by light scattering method was 560 kDa.
  • 6.6. The VG consists of four subunits with molecular weights of approximately 102, 81, 49 and 40 kDa, respectively.
  • 7.7. VG is a lipoprotein and comprises 92% protein and 8% lipid.
  • 8.8. Major lipid components were found to be diacylglycerol (25%) and phospholipids (71%).
