Pollen grains of 15 taxa of the genus Chelonopsis (14 spp. and 1 variety) from China and Japan and 6 species of the closely related genera Bostrychanthera (1 species) and Gomphostemma (5 species) were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Of these, the pollen morphology of 18 taxa was studied for the first time. Pollen grains were found to be tricolpate with polar lengths of 20.8–30.0 μm and equatorial widths of 17.5–27.3 μm. The basic shape of the pollen in most taxa is subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, but spheroidal, subprolate-spheroidal, oblate-spheroidal, and prolate-subprolate grains are also found in some species. The surface is generally reticulate or suprareticulate in Chelonopsis and granulate in Bostrychanthera. In comparison with those of Chelonopsis and Bostrychanthera, the pollen grain surfaces of Gomphostemma are more diverse. In Chelonopsis, pollen is taxonomically useful at the sectional level, and some grains provide enough characters for species delimitation. The potential pollination ecology of cellular hairs on the anthers of Chelonopsis and Bostrychanthera is also briefly discussed. 相似文献

Menthol is an organic compound with diverse medicinal and commercial applications, and is made either synthetically or through extraction from mint oils. The aim of the present study was to investigate menthol levels in selected menthol-producing species belonging to the Lamiaceae family, and to determine phylogenetic relationships of menthol dehydrogenase gene sequence among these species. Three genus of Lamiaceae, namely Mentha, Salvia, and Micromeria, were selected for phytochemical and phylogenetic analyses. After identification of each species based on menthol dehydrogenase gene in NCBI, BLAST software was used for the sequence alignment. MEGA4 software was used to draw phylogenetic tree for various species. Phytochemical analysis revealed that the highest and lowest amounts of both essential oil and menthol belonged to Mentha spicata and Micromeria hyssopifolia, respectively. The species Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita, which were assigned to one cluster in the dendrogram, contained the highest amounts of essential oil and menthol while Micromeria species, which was in the distinct cluster and placed in the farther evolutionary distance, contained the lowest amount of essential oil and menthol. Phylogenetic and phytochemistry analyses showed that essential oil and menthol contents of menthol-producing species are associated with menthol dehydrogenase gene sequence. 相似文献

The oleanolic and ursolic acid contents from 88 taxa of Lamiaceae (19 genera, 66 species, 8 subspecies, 9 varieties and 5 hybrids) were investigated using gas chromatography. Both triterpenoid acids were present in all of the investigated taxa, but the plants belonging in the subfamily Nepetoideae produced significantly higher amounts than those in the subfamily Lamioideae. The oleanolic acid content ranged from traces to 1.840% dry weight, and that of ursolic acid from traces to 4.019% dry weight. 相似文献

Summary The innervation pattern of the intermediate lobe of the skate (Raja radiata) was studied with histological and fluorescence histochemical methods. Neurosecretory fibres, stained with i.a. pseudo-iso-cyanine, were found running in bundles in the central parts of the cell cords. They terminated partly around the perinuclear parts of the intermedia cells, partly around the apices of the cells close to the vascular walls.A catecholamine innervation of the intermedia was also established. Catecholaminecontaining fibres with the appearance of nerve terminals were found around the intermedia cell apices close to the vessels. In some specimens, catecholamine fibres also seemed to terminate at the perinuclear parts of the cells.Thus it is possible, judging solely from structural relations, that both the cell body (the synthesis pole) and the cell apex (the release pole) receive a dual innervation. Pericarp structure is investigated in 143 specimens belonging to 59 out of ca. 65 genera and 134 out of ca. 2,000 species of Lamiaceae subfamily Nepetoideae tribe Mentheae. Some of the data presented by earlier authors are believed to be incorrect. The variation in pericarp structure has been found to be strongly correlated to the variations in DNA and gross morphological characters. The groups of two-staminate genera (Salvia, etc.) and four-staminate genera of Salviinae (Lepechinia and Chaunostoma) can be distinguished from each other and from other labiates by differences in pericarp structure. The other two subtribes, Menthinae and Nepetinae, differ considerably, but their variations strongly overlap. The differences in pericarp structure also suggest that Menthinae can be divided into three main monophyletic groups based on other data: (1) the main bulk of the tribe, (2) a group of Prunella and Cleonia and perhaps also Horminum, and (3) the characteristic genus Lycopus. Pericarp data disagree with a suggestion that the genus Melissa should be included in the subtribe Salviinae. Modifications of the subtribal classification of Mentheae are discussed. 相似文献

Spider major ampullate silk is a high-performance biomaterial that has received much attention. However, most studies ignore plasticity in silk properties. A better understanding of silk plasticity could clarify the relative importance of chemical composition versus processing of silk dope for silk properties. It could also provide insight into how control of silk properties relates to spider ecology and silk uses. We compared silk plasticity (defined as variation in the properties of silk spun by a spider under different conditions) between three spider clades in relation to their anatomy and silk biochemistry. We found that silk plasticity exists in RTA clade and orbicularian spiders, two clades that differ in their silk biochemistry. Orbiculariae seem less dependent on external spinning conditions. They probably use a valve in their spinning duct to control friction forces and speed during spinning. Our results suggest that plasticity results from different processing of the silk dope in the spinning duct. Orbicularian spiders seem to display better control of silk properties, perhaps in relation to their more complex spinning duct valve. 相似文献

The anatomy of the assimilating stems of three brooms (Fabaceae) all show distinct xeromorphic features in their tissues, but these are developed to different degrees. The epidermis consists of very thick, cutinized outer walls, deeply sunken stomata, and a dense layer of trichomes, at least in younger steins. In older sterns some of the stomata are blocked by cell-plugs. The chlorenchyma is multilayered. The main supporting tissue consists of peripheral gelatinous fibre strands. It is argued that these may function in water storage. Parenchymatous water storage cells are present in the pith of two species. The structure and function of the xeromorphic features are discussed in relation to the ecology of the plants. 相似文献

The novel class of dual-family immunophilins (henceforth abbreviated as DFI) represents naturally occurring chimera of classical FK506-binding protein (FKBP) and cyclophilin (CYN), connected by a flexible linker that may include a three-unit tetratricopeptide (TPR) repeat. Here, I report a comprehensive analysis of all current DFI sequences and their host organisms. DFIs are of two kinds: CFBP (cyclosporin- and FK506-binding protein) and FCBP (FK506- and cyclosporin-binding protein), found in eukaryotes. The CFBP type occurs in select bacteria that are mostly extremophiles, such as psychrophilic, thermophilic, halophilic, and sulfur-reducing. Essentially all DFI organisms are unicellular. I suggest that DFIs are specialized bifunctional chaperones that use their flexible interdomain linker to associate with large polypeptides or multisubunit megacomplexes to promote simultaneous folding or renaturation of two clients in proximity, essential in stressful and denaturing environments. Analysis of sequence homology and predicted 3D structures of the FKBP and CYN domains as well as the TPR linkers upheld the modular nature of the DFIs and revealed the uniqueness of their TPR domain. The CFBP and FCBP genes appear to have evolved in parallel pathways with no obvious single common ancestor. The occurrence of both types of DFI in multiple unrelated phylogenetic clades supported their selection in metabolic and environmental niche roles rather than a traditional taxonomic relationship. Nonetheless, organisms with these rare immunophilins may define an operational taxonomic unit (OTU) bound by the commonality of chaperone function. 相似文献

Hybridization and/or incomplete sorting of ancestral polymorphism are commonly implicated to explain discordant phylogenetic analyses of closely related species complexes. One genus in which these phenomena have been suggested to have played major roles based on phylogenetic data is Conradina, a genus of mints (Lamiaceae) endemic to the southeastern USA containing several endangered species. The goals of this study were to use microsatellite data to better understand patterns of genetic structure in Conradina, to test hypotheses of recent or ancient hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting, and to clarify species boundaries. Individuals from 55 populations representing all Conradina species were genotyped using 10 microsatellite loci. Analyses of the patterns of genetic structure in Conradina revealed a clear differentiation of populations following recognized species boundaries, indicating that species have diverged from one another genetically and interspecific hybridization has not occurred recently. Neither ancient hybridization nor incomplete lineage sorting is supported as the sole cause of species nonmonophyly, suggesting that both may have contributed to patterns found in phylogenetic trees; however, analyses of other types of data may be more appropriate to distinguish between these two hypotheses. Because all described species appear to be valid entities, the current listing status of most endangered species of Conradina is appropriate; however, populations of Conradina canescens are genetically differentiated into three groups, each of which may merit species status, and several recently discovered populations of Conradina in Dunn's Creek State Park in Florida are highly differentiated genetically and also appear to represent a new species. 相似文献

Genome size variation in plants is thought to be correlatedwith cytological, physiological, or ecological characters. However,conclusions drawn in several studies were often contradictory.To analyze nuclear genome size evolution in a phylogenetic framework,DNA contents of 134 accessions, representing all but one speciesof the barley genus Hordeum L., were measured by flow cytometry.The 2C DNA contents were in a range from 6.85 to 10.67 pg indiploids (2n = 14) and reached up to 29.85 pg in hexaploid species(2n = 42). The smallest genomes were found in taxa from theNew World, which became secondarily annual, whereas the largestdiploid genomes occur in Eurasian annuals. Genome sizes of polyploidtaxa equaled mostly the added sizes of their proposed progenitorsor were slightly (1% to 5%) smaller. The analysis of ancestralgenome sizes on the base of the phylogeny of the genus revealedlineages with decreasing and with increasing genome sizes. Correlationsof intraspecific genome size variation with the length of vegetationperiod were found in H. marinum populations from Western Europebut were not significant within two species from South America.On a higher taxonomical level (i.e., for species groups or theentire genus), environmental correlations were absent. Thiscould mostly be attributed to the superimposition of life-formchanges and phylogenetic constraints, which conceal ecogeographicalcorrelations. 相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analysis using genes coding for ribosomal RNA and proteins suggests that trypanosomes are monophyletic. Salivarian trypanosomes showing antigenic variation of the variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) diverged from non-Salivarian trypanosomes some 200-300 million years ago. Representatives of the non-Salivarian group, the mammalian parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, and the fresh-water fish trypanosome, T. carassii, are characterised by surfaces dominated by carbohydrate-rich mucin-like glycoproteins, which are not subject to antigenetic variation. It is suggested that this latter surface structure is typical for non-Salivarian trypanosomes as well as members of the other Kinetoplastid suborder, the Bodonina. This would imply that at some point in time in the evolution of the Salivaria the highly abundant and comparatively poorly immunogenetic mucin-like molecules must have been replaced for equally abundant but highly immunogenic VSG-like molecules. While the selective advantage for such a unique transition is difficult to imagine, the subsequent diversification of VSG genes/molecules may have been comparatively straightforward because even the most limited form of antigenic variation would have extended the duration of infection in the vertebrate and thus would have increased the chance for transfer to the vector. 相似文献

Summary Evolutionary and ontogenetic variation of six seedling esterases of independent genetic control is studied in polyploid wheats and their diploid relatives by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Four of them are shown to be controlled by homoeoallelic genes in chromosomes of third, sixth and seventh homoeologous groups.The isoesterase electrophoretic data are considered supporting a monophyletic origin of both the primitive tetraploid and the primitive hexaploid wheat from which contemporary taxa of polyploid wheats have emerged polyphyletically and polytopically through recurrent introgressive hybridization and accumulation of mutations. Ancestral diploids belonging or closely related to Triticum boeoticum, T. urartu, Aegilops speltoides and Ae. tauschii ssp. strangulata are genetically the most suitable genome donors of polyploid wheats. Diploids of the Emarginata subsection of the section Sitopsis, Aegilops longissima s.str., Ae. sharonensis, Ae. searsii and Ae. bicornis, are unsuitable for the role of the wheat B genome donors, being all fixed for the esterase B and D electromorphs different from those of tetraploid wheats. 相似文献

Through traditional culturing and molecular characterization, we have determined that five putative species and 2 polyphyletic assemblages of fungi produce ericoid mycorrhizae in Gaultheria shallon, other Ericaceae and Epacridaceae. Using phylogenetic analysis of ITS2 sequences in GenBank, we have confirmed that most of these fungi occur in North America, Europe, and Australia. The low recovery rate of culturable ericoid mycorrhizal fungi from Gaultheria shallon may partly be explained by the fact that most mycorrhizal root segments contain an unculturable basidiomycete, revealed by direct amplification, cloning, and sequencing of LSU fungal DNA from root. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis are powerful tools in revealing the geographic distribution and identity of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi. 相似文献

Portions of the same fibres were processed for electron microscopy and their fine structure examined. We report the isolation of microsatellite loci from three species in the genus Conradina (Lamiaceae). To ensure their utility for multiple species, loci were screened for amplification and variability in all six Conradina species; 11 loci demonstrated high levels of amplification and polymorphism in most species. These 11 loci were characterized in 20 individuals from one population of Conradina brevifolia; alleles per locus ranged from five to 15, and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.30 to 0.90. These microsatellites will be used to clarify species limits, detect interspecific hybridization, and understand the partitioning of genetic variation in each species of Conradina. 相似文献
