Four polled Hereford bulls were found to have satisfactory breeding soundness examinations. They were examined by B-mode ultrasonography, at which time the testicular diameter was measured by ultrasound. The testicles were removed, measured physically and this data was compared with the ultrasound measurements and correlated with other parameters of the breeding soundness examination. The testicles from bulls with normal breeding soundness examinations appeared ultrasonographically identical with the normal testicles from other species such as the pig and dog. Results indicated that the bull testicle diameter could be accurately measured by ultrasonography. Neither ultrasonographic nor physical testicular diameter measurements correlated statistically with scrotal circumference, but they did correlated well with testicular circumference, weight and volume.  相似文献

Dairy bulls, 322 Ayrshires (Ay) and 85 Friesians (Fr), were studied at the age of 11 months. Of the bulls, 286 Ay-bulls and 80 Fr-bulls produced semen of acceptable quality for use in A.I. Scrotal circumference, tonometer measure, scrotal fold thickness, 1-year body weight and testicular palpation were used to predict unsuitable bulls for A.I. Non-return rate was used as a measure of fertility. Scrotal fold thickness and 1-year weight had no significant correlation with fertility or semen quality. Scrotal circumference had a significant positive correlation with fertility. Tonometer ratio had a significant negative correlation with fertility. Testicular palpation was the best basis for predicting bulls with poor semen quality in this study. Twelve bulls were recorded as having testicles of different sizes, 1 testicle being more than 20 % bigger than the other. Only 2 of these 12 bulls produced semen of acceptable quality. One of these 2 bulls was, after slaughter, diagnosed as having a hereditary testicle disease. Friesians were shown to have significantly higher fertility than Ayrshires.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between testicular shape, scrotal circumference (SC) and sperm production. Twenty-seven mature Holstein bulls were evaluated subjectively and objectively for testicular shape as indicated by testicular length and width, then placed in 1 of 3 groups. Group 1 contained 17 bulls with a normal ovoid testicular shape and a length to width ratio of 1.61:1 +/- 0.01 (SEM). Group 2 was composed of 4 bulls with a long, slender testicular shape and a length to width ratio of 1.95:1 +/- 0.06 (SEM). Group 3 was comprised of 6 bulls with spheroid-shaped testicles and a length to width ratio of 1.3:1 +/- 0.03 (SEM). All the groups were statistically different for length to width ratios (P < 0.05). Length measurements from cranial to caudal pole of the testis proper were also different between groups (P < 0.05). Width or testicular diameter was different between Group 2 and Group 3 at P < 0.05; however, there was no difference between Group 1 and Group 2 or between Group 1 and Group 3. Predicted volumes and weights of testicles were not significantly different between groups. Scrotal circumference measurements were significantly different between groups (P < 0.05). Group 1 had an average SC of 43.07 +/- 0.36 cm (SEM), Group 2 of 39.33 +/- 1.18 cm (SEM) and Group 3 of 46.22 +/- 0.69 cm (SEM). Sperm production for a twice daily, 2-day-per-week collection schedule revealed a statistically significant difference for sperm output. A total of 2742 ejaculates was evaluated. A total of 1818 ejaculates was evaluated in Group 1, 440 ejaculates in Group 2 and 484 ejaculates in Group 3. The mean spermatozoal harvest per day for Group 1 bulls was 13.62 +/- 0.09 x 10(9) (SEM). Group 2 bulls with the longer-shaped testicles produced 14.82 +/- 0.18 x 10(9) (SEM) spermatozoa per day, and Group 3 bulls, with the more rounded testicle shape and the significantly larger SC produced 11.72 +/- 0.64 x 10(9)(SEM) sperm cells per day. All 3 groups were statistically different at the P = 0.05 level. The results suggest that prediction of sperm production may be dependent on factors other than SC, testicular volume, or weight. Testicular shape may influence sperm output in mature Holstein bulls.  相似文献

Few data are available for assessing the relative testicle size of orang-utans, Pongo pygmaeus, so measures were obtained for 31 individuals of varying age. It was shown that the volume of the testicles, calculated from in situ measures of testicle length and breadth, closely approximates testicle weight when multiplied by the specific gravity of solid tissue. Growth curves for body weight and data published for wild specimens were evaluated to obtain the weight most characteristic of male Pongo, and the ratio of testicle weight to body weight was calculated. The mean ratio for individuals with fully adult stature is 0.034, similar to but smaller than that of humans at about 0.050, and larger than the ratios reported for 5 gorillas at 0.013. The testicles mature faster than the body, however, so the mean ratio for young adult orang-utans is about 0.056 and resembles the ratio for humans more closely than the full adults. The differences between the ratios for a monogamous gibbon species, orang-utans, and humans is accounted for when testicle size relative to the weight of the female is considered. This is consistent with a sperm dilution effect produced by variation in the size of the female reproductive tract. The small relative testicle size of the gorilla is anomalous and requires verification as does the application of female size to scale the testicles. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A unilateral cryptorchid bull stationed in an AI center for 3.5 yr was studied to determine if maintaining such a bull could be justified. The following parameters were determined: quantity and quality of the ejaculates, basal and stimulated plasma testosterone concentrations, and the histology and testosterone concentrations of the testicles. The bull produced 232 ejaculates of which 125 (53.8%) were immediately discarded; the rest (107 ejaculations) were processed into pellets. Two of the 107 frozen ejaculates (2%) were found to be of excellent quality, 37 were (34.5%) of good quality, 45 were (42%) of satisfactory quality and 23 were (21.5%) of poor quality. Treatment of the calf with GnRH and hCG at 4 and 5 mo of age did not initiate the descent of the retained testicle. Testosterone concentrations measured at 14 mo, after hCG stimulus, indicated that the bull had impaired steroidogenesis when compared with 2 control bull calves. Post mortem examination revealed a small left testicle in the inguinal canal and a normal right testicle as well as normal secondary sex glands. During the breeding period at the AI center, the bull's peripheral testosterone concentrations decreased from 2.2 to 0.95 ng/ml Testosterone concentrations in the parenchymal tissue of the scrotal testicle were higher than in the parenchyma of the retained testicle (98.2 vs 53.9 ng/g). In contrast, the epididymis of the scrotal testicle had a lower testosterone concentration than the epididymis of the retained testicle (10.8 vs 33. 0 ng/g). On histological examination no spermatozoa were found in the retained testicle, the Sertoli cells showed fat degeneration, and fibrotic tissue surrounded the tubuli seminiferi. No pathological changes were found in the normal scrotal testicle. In conclusion, no justification was found for maintaining such a bull in the AI center for breeding purposes.  相似文献

The intensity of sperm competition is often measured using the gonadosomatic index (testes/body weight). But sperm competition could be mediated more by size of the epididymis than by size of the testicles, and little information is available on the relationship between testicular and epididymal size. We found that both organs were positively correlated in size among male rhesus macaques. Body weight accounted for over 70% of the variance in testicle size and volumetric estimates of testicle size accurately reflected testicle weight. We conclude that methods for ascertaining testicle size are accurate, but the covariation in size between testicles and epididymis will hamper understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved in sperm competition in primates. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) virus was inoculated into 9 bulls. Semen samples were collected to determine if BVD virus could be isolated from semen and to determine if the virus affected semen quality. The reproductive tracts of 6 bulls were recovered following slaughter and subjected to virus isolation procedures and histologic examination.BVD virus was detected in 4 of 98 semen samples following inoculation. The virus was also recovered from the testicle of one bull following slaughter. Inoculation of BVD virus into bulls did not affect semen quality and did not cause gross or microscopic lesions in the reproductive tract. This experiment indicates that following inoculation of BVD virus into bulls, the virus may be shed in the semen. However, the probability of this occurring is low.  相似文献

This study quantified the relationship between calibrated caliper and ultrasonographic derived measurements of bovine testicles in vivo with actual testicular length, width, volume and weight. The prolate spheroid formula was tested to accurately predict testicular volume and a modification to predict weight. Ten bulls were employed to derive caliper and ultrasound testicle (n = 20) length and width measurements in vivo. Caliper length measurements were more reliable than ultrasound derived lengths, with correlations of r2 = 0.8023; P < 0.05 and r2 = 0.5111; P < 0.05, respectively. Width for both the calipers and ultrasound measurements when compared to actual width measurements were r2 = 0.7313; P < 0.05 and r2 = 0.8310; P < 0.05, respectively. The prolate spheroid formula is reliable in determining testicle (n = 116) volume (r2 = 0.8928; P < 0.05). Testicular volume and weight are highly correlated (r2 = 0.9776; P < 0.05); therefore, a modification of the prolate spheroid formula was used to predict weight (r2 = 0.9084; P < 0.05) against the actual weight. Caliper-derived length and width measurements used in the prediction of volume and weight had correlation coefficients against actual volume and weight of r2 = 0.5497; P < 0.05 and r2 = 0.6340; P < 0.05, respectively. Ultrasound in vivo measurements for prediction of testicular volume and testicular weight had a correlation of r2 = 0.3276; P < 0.05 and r2 = 0.6249; P < 0.05, respectively. A testicular (n = 116) length to width ratio of 1.8:1 (SEM = 0.01) was determined for both slaughterhouse and castrated animals. Caliper measurements are reliable, inexpensive and much simpler to obtain than ultrasound determinations for in vivo testicle length, width, volume and weight. The two-dimensional measurement of length and width would be a more accurate predictor of testicle volume and weight than the one-dimensional measurement of scrotal circumference (SC), especially in bulls with variation in testicular shape.  相似文献

This study was conducted to quantify the relationships between in vivo measurements of testicular and seminal vesicle size and post mortem size of these organs in 30 Santa Gertrudis bulls. The in vivo measurements of testicles were obtained by transrectal ultrasonography and palpation per rectum, while scrotal circumference was measured by scrotal tape. Linear post mortem dimensions were obtained by direct measurements of the excised organs. Volume was assessed by water displacement while the testicles were weighed. Seminal vesicle length, determined by palpation, had the highest correlation with post mortem measurements (r = 0.70; P = 0.0001). Accurate estimation of the thickness of the vesicles (1.47 vs 1.55 cm for in vivo and post mortem, respectively) was performed by ultrasonograph. Of all seminal vesicle linear measurements, width had the highest correlations with volume measured by water displacement (r = 0.67; P = 0.0001 and r = 0.38; P = 0.04 for post mortem and in vivo, respectively). Testicular diameter was accurately measured by ultrasonography (5.54 vs 4.58 cm in vivo and post mortem, respectively) and was highly correlated (range r = 0.84 to 0.89; P = 0.0001) with post mortem measurements of testicular volume, weight and circumference. The correlation between scrotal circumference and diameter of the testicle was 0.75 (P = 0.0001). The correlations of testicular diameter measured by ultrasound with the post mortem measurements of testicular weight and circumference were similar to the correlations between scrotal circumference and those 2 post mortem measurements. We conclude that palpation of vesicle length is highly correlated with volume of the seminal vesicle in situ. Individual linear measurements do not seem to be an accurate predictor of the relativ size of the seminal vesicle. Furthermore, ultrasonography does not seem to be a more accurate measure of testicular size than scrotal circumference for evaluation of breeding soundness.  相似文献

Eighty-one mixed breed intact male dogs were divided into three groups: Group 1 = left testicle biopsied by Trucut needle method (n=36); Group 2 = left testicle biopsied by Incisional method (n = 39); Group 3 = not biopsied (n = 6). The dogs were castrated 1 to 36 d following biopsy. The biopsy specimens and both testicles were examined for gross and histologic lesions. There was no effect of biopsy on testicle circumference. There was a positive correlation (r(2) = 0.93) between testicular circumference and occurrence of lesions. Incisional biopsies induced more gross lesions (67 vs 33%), and more histologic lesions (135 vs 43). The histologic lesions included hypospermatogenesis, coagulation necrosis, tubular degeneration, interstitial fibrosis and inflammation. In addition, the lesions observed in Incisional biopsy specimens were of greater severity and incidence than Trucut biopsy specimens (87 vs 35%). It was concluded that Incisional biopsy induced an increase in frequency and severity of lesions compared with Trucut biopsy of the canine testicle.  相似文献

In a previous study, we demonstrated that Belgian Blue (BB) bulls have a higher prevalence of small scrota and poorer semen morphology compared to the Holstein Friesian (HF) breed in Belgium. The present study tested the hypothesis that the underlying reason for these BB traits negative to fertility was testicular degeneration, associated with an eventual hypoplastic background. At culling, sperm quality and testicular histology of BB bulls were assessed and compared to that of HF bulls. Besides semen quality being generally poorer in the BB breed, significantly more degenerative changes were encountered in BB compared to HF testicles (degeneration index: 37.7+/-11.9 versus 29.3+/-9.9 for BB and HF bulls, respectively; P=0.053). These results correlated to the percentage of normal spermatozoa (r=-0.44; P=0.024) and primary abnormalities (r=0.38; P=0.053). Moreover, the relative amount of collagen fibers present in the testicular interstitial connective tissue was correlated with % normal sperm (r=-0.47; P=0.017), primary defects (0.48; P=0.014), and the degeneration results (r=0.63; P<0.001). The % testicular interstitial collagen fibers differed significantly between breeds (10.6+/-4.0% for the BB versus 7.6+/-1.9% for the HF bulls; P=0.016). This increased amount of connective tissue in BB testes might hypothetically be responsible for the poorer sperm quality. This condition can be defined as a mild form of testicular hypoplasia, and might, in turn, be responsible for the higher sensitivity to testicular degeneration, which is encountered in the BB breed.  相似文献

At present, male infertility remains an urgent medical concern. From year to year, despite advances in methods of diagnosis and treatment, medicine encounters an increasing number of infertile couples with male infertility playing a leading role. Prerequisites for fertility disorders very frequently appear in childhood. Urologists consider cryptorchidism a leading cause of male infertility. The aim of our study was to establish the relationship between testicular descent to the scrotum and the age of the fetus. Material and methods. The study was conducted using 195 specimens of male fetuses aged 4–10 months with 81.0–375.0 mm parietalcoccygeal length (PCL) using the methods of macromicroscopic, conventional, and microslide preparation under control of binocular loupes and morphometry. Results. At the beginning of the fetal period of human ontogenesis (fetuses 81.0–135.0 mm PCL), the right and left testicles are mainly located above the corresponding deep inguinal ring and they are less often located in a region of the iliac fossae. An analysis of topographic and anatomical features of the male reproductive glands in 5-month-old fetuses (136.0–185.0 mm PCL) revealed that the testicles were located within the large pelvis, with the lower end of both the right and left testicles located above the entrance to the deep inguinal ring at a distance that equals the length of the pelvic part of the gubernaculum testis—3.2 ± 0.3 mm (right) and 2.8 ± 0.2 mm (left). In 11 fetuses aged 7 months (231.0–270.0 mm PCL), the lower ends of the testicles and their gubernaculum testis are immersed in the corresponding deep inguinal ring. In eight fetuses, the testicles were within the deep inguinal ring. A combination of many factors contributes to the final migration of a testicle through the inguinal canal into the scrotum (fetuses: 270.0 cm–290.0 mm PCL), including muscle contraction of the anterolateral abdominal wall, an increase in intra-abdominal pressure, contractile capacity of the gubernaculum testis of the testicle, the vaginal process of the peritoneum, and the neuro-muscular system. We believe that the gubernaculum testis is a particularly significant factor in testicular descent to the scrotum. The gubernaculum testis is maximally developed prior to migration of a testicle through the inguinal canal (eighth month of antenatal development), as evidenced by the prevalence of smooth muscle cells over connective tissue elements. An analysis of testicular topography in fetuses aged 9 months (311.0–345.0 mm PCL) revealed that testicles were located in the scrotum in nine fetuses, near the superficial inguinal ring in six fetuses, within the inguinal canal in four cases, and in the deep inguinal ring in one case. In fetuses aged 10 months (346.0–375.0 mm PCL), testicles were located in the scrotum in 13 cases and within the inguinal canal in seven cases. According to our research, the fusion of layers of the vaginal process of the peritoneum occurs in fetuses aged 9–10 months, resulting in the disappearance of the communication of its cavity with the peritoneum. A delay in the fusion of the peritoneal vaginal process layers at the end of the fetal period is an anatomic prerequisite for the occurrence of congenital inguinal-scrotal hernias. Conclusions. It has been found that the rate of testicular descent to the scrotum does not always coincide with the corresponding stage of fetal development. An accelerated development of the gubernaculum testis in fetuses aged 5–8 months is a major factor of heterochronic development of a testicle and subsequent testicular descent into the scrotum.  相似文献

Orchiopexy by our method has given uniformly good results. We have had no direct nor indirect hernias after this dissection. We have had no complications attributable to the complete dissection we recommend. This dissection should give an increase in spermatic cord length averaging 6.5 centimeters. If the vas deferens is completely freed, an additional 2.5 centimeters of length is gained. This increase in length is four times that obtained by the routine classical dissections confined to the inguinal canal. All testicles absent from the scrotum should be transplanted by the sixth year. Earlier operation may be made necessary by troublesome hernia, pain, or torsion. Adequate incision, division of the floor of the inguinal canal, and retroperitoneal dissection assure good exposure. Division of the lateral spermatic ligament and elimination of the sides of the spermatic surgical triangles allow the testicle to exit from the external ring only. This will result in viable testicles in the depth of the scrotum, attached to intact blood supplies and vasa deferentia, and without tension, this giving the best chance to have normal spermatogenic testicles at puberty.  相似文献

The clinically healthy testicles and epididymides of 31 rams were imaged inside and outside the breeding period, by using a real time ultrasound scanner. A scanning technique based on multiple imaging planes from the caudal and the lateral surface of the genitalia was employed. Optimum imaging was achieved by using a 6.0 MHz frequency sector transducer. The testicular parenchyma appeared homogeneous with a coarse medium echo-pattern. The mediastinum testis was present in 87% of rams and 77% of testicles; its median echogenicity score was 2 (range: 0-3) among rams aged 13 months or older and 1 among rams aged less than 13 months (P = 0.001). The tail of the epididymis was always clearly visible; it appeared less echoic than the testicular parenchyma and with a heterogeneous structure. The epididymal body was not visible, whilst the epididymal head was consistently partially imaged. The pampiniform plexus was clearly imaged as a dome-shaped structure masking the upper part of the head of the epididymis. The scrotal septum was seen in lateral sonograms as a highly echogenic line between the testicles. The scrotal skin formed a thick hyper-echoic peripheral structure.  相似文献

Ten adult rams were used in a study to compare ultrasonographic and physical measurements of testicles. Scrotal circumference measurements were correlated with both physical and ultrasonographic measurements and with semen analysis results. Scrotal circumference correlated well with most of the physical and ultrasonographic measurements and with semen motility and percent abnormalities. Ultrasonographic measurements correlated with scrotal circumferences but not with the semen analysis. There were significant differences in physical and ultrasonographic measurements of testicle circumference and diameter, especially when the ultrasonographic measurements were made through the intact scrotal wall. There appear to be problems in the accuracy of ultrasonographic measurements of testicle size in rams.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the presence and magnitude of seasonal fluctuations in semen quality and other reproductive indices in bison bulls. Testicles from 288 commercially slaughtered bison bulls were collected monthly over a 1-year period. Carcass and testicle weight were determined and measurements of seminiferous tubule lumen, diameter, and epithelial thickness were made. Sperm cell morphology and defects were described and quantified using epididymal semen from each testicle. Twenty-one Plains (Bison bison bison) and Wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) breeding bulls, averaging 6.0 years of age (range 2.5-8.0), from three farms were selected for semen collection and evaluation on the basis of producer co-operation. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation on four seasonal occasions during a 12-month period. Ejaculate quality was judged on the basis of volume, density, gross and individual motility, morphology, live/dead ratio, and concentration. Sperm cell morphologies were evaluated microscopically and classified according to criteria used for bovine semen. Fecal testosterone was measured at each semen collection using a commercial competitive binding radioimmunoassay. There was an increase in carcass weights over the study period and testis weights were moderately correlated (r=0.44) with carcass weights. However, mean testes weights were heavier (P<0.05) in the summer than in winter, spring, or fall periods. There were no differences in the proportion of normal and abnormal epididymal sperm between seasons but there were seasonal changes in the testicular parenchyma. Seminiferous tubule and lumen diameter, and epithelial thickness were greatest (P<0.05) in summer. Live bulls gained weight between April and November, but lost weight over the winter. Normal sperm cell percentages as well as individual sperm cell motility in electro-ejaculated sperm samples were higher (P<0.05) at the pre-breeding collection relative to other collections, but no change in sperm cell concentrations occurred over the study period. Fecal testosterone concentrations were highest at the pre-breeding period (June) but decreased (P<0.05) in each subsequent collection to reach their lowest levels in the April. While many changes in seen characteristics were not significant, overall results indicate the presence of some reproductive seasonality and increased testicular capacity in the summer breeding season. Bulls showing marginal semen quality in the winter but otherwise carrying desirable genetic traits may warrant another evaluation in late spring prior to being culled from a breeding program.  相似文献

Thirty-two healthy bulls, 12 to 16 mos of age, were biopsied using 20G 2″; 19G 1 1/2″, 18G 1 1/2″ or 16G 1 1/2″ needles attached to a 20 ml syringe. Semen was evaluated pre- and postbiopsy both qualitatively and quantitatively and tested for the presence of bacterial, fungal or viral contaminants. The testicles were measured and palpated pre- and postbiopsy and examined grossly and microscopically following castration or slaughter at intervals postbiopsy. There was no evidence of infection postbiopsy and, apart from the possibility of a transient drop in fertilizing ability during the first month following biopsy and a transient increase in the percentage of sperm with acrosomal ageing during the second and third months following biopsy, the semen appeared normal. It was concluded that the procedure is a safe and practical method of obtaining testicular tissue for meiotic analysis.  相似文献

A study was designed to investigate relationships between testicle size and histological, sperm production and endocrinological traits in yearling beef bulls at the end of performance test. Twenty-five beef bulls, (Hereford, n=16; Angus, n=4; and Charolais, n=5), with scrotal circumference (SC) measurements ranging from 28.5 to 36.0 cm, were used. Just prior to slaughter at 15 mo of age, SC measurements were taken, semen was collected, and a GnRH response test was conducted. Testicles were processed for daily sperm production (DSP), epididymal sperm reserves (ESR), seminiferous epithelial area (SEA), and degree of germinal epithelial loss (DGEL). There were significant positive correlations between SC and testicular weight (P<0.05), DSP/g (P<0.02), and DSP/bull (P<0.01) and ESR (P<0.01); however, the correlation between SC and SEA was not significant (P=0.4). Scrotal circumference was negatively correlated with DGEL (P<0.05). Degree of germinal epithelial loss was also negatively correlated with DSP/g, DSP/bull and ESR (P<0.01). Morphological characteristics of spermatozoa were diversely related to sperm production traits, and the percentage of normal spermatozoa was positively related to SC (P<0.02) and negatively related to DGEL (P<0.001). Gonadotropin releasing hormone stimulation did not reveal evidence of gonadotropin deficiency in any of the bulls. However, peak testosterone levels were lower in bulls with SC below 31 cm (P<0.05) than those with SC measurements above 31 cm.  相似文献

Immunoelectrophoretic methods were used to observe the formation of precipitates with esterase activity in the blood serum, spermatozoa and the genital tract fluid of bulls, and also in the follicular fluid of cows. Fractions with esterase activity were found in the seminal vesicle fluid and the ampullar fluid of all investigated animals. Considerable individual differences in the formation of precipitates with esterase activity were found in the mentioned fluids. Ejaculated and ampullar spermatozoa, spermatozoa from the tail of the epididymis and the testicle fluid formed fractions with esterase activity only in some individuals. Esterase activity was not detected in the fluid of the tail of the epididymis of bulls nor in the follicular fluid of cows.  相似文献
