The interaction of excitation and inhibition in responses due to attentional mechanisms in the visual system has been investigated. The studies reported herein use the tactile system of humans to test a specific hypothesis about the processes of attention that have never been directly addressed. Both exogenous and endogenous Inhibition of Return (IOR) reaction-time paradigms with a 100?Hz, 35?µm of peak displacement amplitude were used. In these experiments multiple Stimulus Onset Asynchronies were tested which made it difficult for subjects to learn timing patterns. We tested whether a detection time to a target which is to be attended to is a composite of at least two underlying mechanisms. These mechanisms were explored using exogenous and endogenous IOR experiments. It is hypothesized that these mechanisms work in a push–pull fashion: one deploying attention when new events occur, and the other withdrawing attention (“Disengagement”) after it has been deployed. Based on the results, a new hypothesis is proposed stating that one form of attention (selective attention) competes with IOR in determining the time taken to detect a target in the tactile system.  相似文献

Infections with Babesia rodhaini and B. microti were studied in congenitally asplenic (Dh/+) mice, surgically splenectomised mice and intact mice. Mice without spleens were more susceptible to infections than intact mice, but Dh/+ mice were less susceptible than surgically splenectomised mice, indicating that some functional splenic activity had been taken over by other tissues in Dh/+ mice. It is suggested that this functional activity may be mediated by natural killer (NK) cells, and that Dh/+ mice could prove of value in the study of babesiosis in general and NK activity in particular.Male mice were more susceptible to infection than females.  相似文献

Some components of the food-related behaviour (biting, feeding, walking on the plant or walking elsewhere, and resting) of two North American and three European Colorado potato beetle (CPB) populations, on six solanaceous plant species were monitored with the help of a microcomputer-based program, testing the hypothesis whether populations showed differences at the behavioural level to alternative host plants (S. melongena, S. dulcamara, andLycopersicon esculentum), as well as to non-host plants occasionally encountered (S. luteum, S. nigrum.). The few significant differences found were among populations of the same continent in 1) the number of activities monitored, 2) the duration of feeding periods, 3) the number of bites taken to the onset of feeding, 4) the ‘amount of behavioural plasticity’, and 5) the ‘behavioural diversity’. On the basis of two-way ANOVA analyses, no plant-by-population interactions were detected indicating that the CPB populations studied did not have specific relationships with any of the plant species tested. The lack of substantial differences in food-related behaviour was unexpected since considerable isolation in space and time exists between the populations occurring on the two continents.  相似文献

Picea glauca (white spruce) zygotic embryos and one-week-old-seedling epicotyl explants were placed on either Woody Plant Medium (WPM) or half-strength Schenk & Hildebrandt (1/2S&H) medium supplemented with varying levels of benzyladenine (BA) (0.1, 1.0, 10, 50, 100 M), zeatin (10, 50, 100 M) or thidiazuron (TDZ) (0.01, 0.1 M). In addition to differences in the number of buds induced at three months on the two media, buds induced on WPM were visually more uniform, less vitrified and elongated faster. On 1/2S&H supplemented with BA, maximum bud induction from embryos occurred on 1.0 M BA with 0.01 M TDZ with higher BA concentrations inhibitory to bud induction. In contrast, on WPM there was little difference in the number of buds induced from embryos placed on 10, 50 and 100 M BA with or without TDZ. One-week-old-seedling epicotyl explants required higher BA levels on 1/2S&H, as bud induction at three months was greatest at 10 M BA. On WPM, as with the embryos, there were only minor differences in the number of buds induced from epicotyl explants on the various BA levels. Zeatin was more effective at inducing buds than BA with both media. From embryos, bud induction was greatest on 50 or 100 M zeatin without TDZ and 50 or 100 M zeatin with or without TDZ on 1/2S&H and WPM respectively. From epicotyl explants on 1/2S&H, there was little difference in the number of buds induced with the zeatin concentrations used, while with WPM, 50 and 100 M zeatin induced the greatest number of buds. Interestingly, with BA, the epicotyl explants needed a higher level than the embryos for maximal response, while with zeatin, the level was the same for both embryos and epicotyl explants. Long-term (six month) survival was higher on WPM than with 1/2S&H. Additionally, embryos had a higher percentage of genotypes surviving at six-months when compared with epicotyl explants. Changes in soil quality after 45 years of continuous production of corn (Zea mays L.) by the conventional tillage method (C) compared with adjacent poplar forest (F) and native grassland (G) sites were examined. The investigated parameters were: total and humified organic C, total N, light fraction content and composition, water-soluble organic C (WSOC), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), phenolic substances, biomass C, cumulative CO2-C (soil respiration) (C m), enzyme activities (alkaline phosphatase, protease, -glucosidase, urease, catalase and dehydrogenase). Empirical indexes of soil quality were also calculated: biomass C/organic C, specific respiration of biomass C (qCO2), death rate quotient (qD), metabolic potential (MP), biological index of fertility (BIF), enzyme activity number (EAN) and hydrolysing coefficient (HC). Results indicate that long-term corn production at an intensive level caused a marked decline in all examined parameters. Between the undisturbed systems, native grassland showed higher values of soil quality parameters than forest site. The indexes most responsive to management practices that may provide indications of the effects of soil cultivation, as well as of the differently undisturbed ecosystems were: organic C, WSC, C m, protease, -glucosidase, urease and HC. Diatoms and macroinvertebrates are both commonly used for biological assessment of stream condition. As the use of biological assessment techniques increases, resource managers will need to make decisions on which biological tool to use for a particular study. In a study of the Kiewa River, Victoria, Australia we assessed these two components of the biota—macroinvertebrates and diatoms—using indices and pattern analysis, and comparing them with an a priori landscape classification. We also assessed the relationship exhibited between the biological results and environmental variables which are usually significant in stream ecosystems. To make the data comparable we used categorical abundances for both data sets. The pattern analyses showed complementary results, with diatoms more closely related to water quality variables, whereas macroinvertebrates were primarily related to catchment and habitat features. An analysis of a combined data set (diatoms plus macroinvertebrates) showed no extra information was gained. Using categorisation to create consistency between data sets was shown to reduce the information and affect results from the diatom analyses. The results suggested that the locally derived bioassessment models and indices provided a more accurate assessment of the sites than the overseas-derived diatom index. The outcomes are complicated by issues of data weighting, whereby a presence/absence diatom index may have performed better than abundance-weighted indices due to strong dominance of one or two species at a site. Future comparisons will benefit from an increase in the knowledge of regional diatom taxonomy and autecology.  相似文献

Abstract. The three Leptogenys species L.nitida, L.schwabi and L.attenuata coexist in the coastal forests of South Africa and exhibit an array of foraging strategies ranging from individual foraging to group raiding. To determine whether there is a physiological basis for these strategies, the energetic cost of locomotion of individuals in these three species was determined. Carbon dioxide emission of voluntary running ants was measured using a flow-through technique, in order to determine their metabolic rate when running. The minimum cost of transport was constant over a range of temperatures (20–35°C), and similar for all three species (common value 212.96 ± 17.35 Jkg_1m_1). A comparison of the energy required to sustain representative foragers at 25°C indicated that it was energetically less expensive for L. nitida workers to forage than for the other two species. This may explain why L.nitida uses group raiding, while the other two species use individual foraging with limited recruitment for retrieval of large food items.  相似文献

To assess which hormones are capable of masculinizing the neural song system of zebra finch hatchlings, we implanted female hatchlings with estrogen (estradiol [E2], 75 μg, n = 9), testosterone (T, 75–88 μg, n = 13), androstenedione (AE, 75 μg, n = 7), progesterone (P, 117 μg, n = 10), or nothing (Blanks, n = 10) and compared these to unimplanted males (n = 7). Implants, consisting of a hormone and Silastic mixture encased in polyethylene tubing, were placed under the skin of the breast on the day of hatching. Birds were killed when they were subadult (58 to 68 days old). We measured volumes of area X, the higher vocal center (HVC), and the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA); measured soma sizes in the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the neostriatum (IMAN), HVC, and RA: and counted RA neurons. E2 masculinized all measures in the song system and nearly sex-reversed the size of RA neurons. T masculinized volumes of nuclei and soma sizes but not the number or spacing of RA neurons. E2 was always at least as effective as T in masculinizing measures of the song system and was usually more effective. AE and P did not significantly masculinize any measure. These data suggest that E2 is more potent than aromatizable androgens or P in masculinizing the female song system in development and that the action of E2 alone may be sufficient to masculinize the volume of song control nuclei and the size and number of neurons. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The turnover of native collagen has been ascribed to different members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family. Here, the mechanisms by which neutrophil collagenase (MMP-8), gelatinase A (MMP-2), and the ectodomain of MT1-MMP (ectMMP-14) degrade fibrillar collagen were examined. In particular, the hydrolysis of type I collagen at 37 degrees C was investigated to identify functional differences in the processing of the two alpha-chain types of fibrillar collagen. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were used for a quantitative comparison of the binding, unwinding, and hydrolysis of triple helical collagen. We demonstrate that the MMP family has developed at least two distinct mechanisms for collagen unwinding and cleavage. MMP-8 and ectMMP-14 display a similar mechanism (although with different catalytic parameters), which is characterized by binding (likely through the hemopexin-like domain) and cleavage of alpha-1 and/or alpha-2 chains without distinguishing between them and keeping the gross conformation of the triple helix (at least during the first cleavage step). On the other hand, MMP-2 binds preferentially the alpha-1 chains (likely through the fibronectin-like domain, which is not present in MMP-8 and ectMMP-14), grossly altering the whole triple helical arrangement of the collagen molecule and cleaving preferentially the alpha-2 chain. These distinctive mechanisms underly a drastically different mode of interaction with triple helical fibrillar collagen I, according to which the MMP domain is involved in binding. These findings can be related to the different role exerted by these MMPs on collagen homeostasis in the extracellular matrix.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of human adenovirus serotypes 12 (Ad 12, oncogenic subgroup A), 7 (Ad7, weakly oncogenic subgroup B) and 5 (Ad5, non-oncogenic subgroup C) DNAs have been compared. The region studied stretches from the termination codon of region Ela (m.p. 4.2) and comprises the entire region of the three viral DNAs. ending at the polyadenylation signal of the gene for viral polypeptide IVa2 (m.p. 11.2). The homology in the sequences encoding the Elb proteins of Mr 20000 and Mr 55000 is 55–60%, when two serotypes are compared, and about 45% in a three-strain comparison. However, a short internal segment encoding the C terminus of the Mr 20000 protein, and at the same time amino acids 23-120 of the Mr 55000 protein show a much higher degree of divergence in the three strains, as do the noncoding areas. The present study does not reveal how the three serotypes are phylogenetically related.  相似文献
