A rapid cold hardening response was studied in females and males of the olive fruit fly Bactrocera (Dacus) oleae. When laboratory-reared females and males were transferred and maintained from the rearing temperature of 24 °C for 2 h to –6.5 °C approximately 5% survived. However, conditioning of both females and males for 2 h at various temperatures from 0 to 10 °C before their exposure for 2 h to –6.5 °C increased survival to 80 to 92%. A similar rapid cold hardening response in both females and males was also induced through gradual cooling of the flies at a rate of approximately 0.4 °C per min. The rapid increase in cold tolerance after prior conditioning of the flies to low temperatures, was rapidly lost when they returned to a higher temperature of 24 °C. In the field, in late February and early March, females and males were capable of a rapid cold hardening response. After exposure to the critical temperature they suffered a high mortality when tested in the afternoon and low mortality early in the morning on consecutive days, probably because of differences in the prevailing field temperatures a few hours before testing. This plasticity of cold tolerance gained through rapid cold hardening may allow the flies to survive during periods of the year with great fluctuation in circadian temperatures.  相似文献

All life-stages ofSarcoptes scabiei var.canis survive in the hosts' environment for several days to several weeks depending on r.h. and temperature. Survival of larvae was comparable to males; survival of nymphs was comparable to females. Females and nymphs generally survived longer than larvae and males.Low temperature (10–15°) and high r.h. prolonged survival of all life stages. At 10–15°C, females and nymphs survived 1–3 weeks at 97% r.h., 1–2 weeks at 75% r.h. and 5–8 days at 45% r.h. At 20–25°C, survival was significantly reduced but all life-stages survived at least 2 days at 25% r.h. and 5–6 days at 75–100% r.h. Long survival off the host coupled with host-seeking behavior of these mites make it likely that environmental contamination is a source of scabies in domestic and wild mammals, and in humans.  相似文献

Reproduction and development ofAmblyseius alstoniae Gupta is significantly affected by temperature and relative humidity (rh), optimum being a temperature of 25°C andrh of 70%. At this combination, the viability of eggs, fecundity and daily egg production were higher, oviposition period and longevity were of longer duration, and mortality was minimal. Increase or decrease in these temperature andrh levels leads to a drop in fecundity, longevity and oviposition period and an increase in mortality. Longevity of females is always greater than that of males, irrespective of temperature andrh. Female: male ratio decreases with increase in temperature, irrespective ofrh.  相似文献

Electron transport system (ETS) activity was measured in Chirocephalus croaticus from the intermittent lake, Petelinjsko Jezero. The ETS activities were measured at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 °C, and were studied separately in juveniles, females and males. Juveniles had significantly higher activity than adults at a standard temperature of 20 °C. The mass-specific ETS activity decreased with increasing size of the animals; the value b was 0.787. Respiration rates (R) were determined at 20 °C and the ratio ETS/R (±standard deviation) for C. croaticus was 1.43±0.46 (n=38). ETS activity increased with temperature. Females had higher Q10 than males in higher temperature range (t-test; t=2.50; d.f.=8; p<0.05). Activation energy Ea was higher for females than males (t-test; t=2.35; d.f.=8; p<0.05). Females exhibited lower ETS activity than males over the lower temperature range, but their ETS could function more efficient at higher temperature.  相似文献

Fecundity, longevity and survival to adulthood ofAcarus siro (L.) at constant and alternating temperatures were compared. Both fecundity and longevity were affected by alternating temperatures but the effect of the frequency of alternations was not significant. Significantly higher fecundity and longer life spans were recorded at constant temperatures of 14 and 21°C than at 28°C or at alternating temperature regimes. Alternating temperature regimes in comparison to constant regimes did not significantly change the number of males and females surviving to adulthood or the sex ratio. However, the lowest number of adults surviving was recorded when temperatures were changed every 12 h and the highest at a constant temperature of 14°C.  相似文献

Summary Exposure of 4–5 day oldDaphnia hyalina to temperatures of 32° C and higher caused substantial mortality when the exposure time was an hour or more. The tolerance ofBosmina sp. to temperature shocks appears to be about that ofD. hyalina. Naupllus larvae ofCyclops sp. were much more tolerant.Survival and reproduction ofD. hyalina at high temperatures were strongly influenced by the food concentration. In a high food concentration the reproduction is at 28° C as high as at 20° C.  相似文献

The life history of New Zealand flower thrips (Thrips obscuratus (Crawford), Thysanoptera: Thripidae) was studied using a simple laboratory rearing method. The effects of temperature and diet on oviposition rate and development time were examined. Oviposition rate increased with increasing temperature between 10°C and 25°C. Development time for individual instars and for total development decreased with increasing temperature between 10°C and 27°C. Total development time ranged from 50 days at 10°C (female) to 10 days at 27°C (male). The relationship between temperature and development rate was expressed as a straight line such that lower thresholds of development of between 4.2°C and 6.3°C were established for life stages. Adult lifespan increased with decreasing temperature between 10°C and 25°C and females lived longer than males. At 10°C and 25°C females lived for an average of 34 and 3 weeks respectively. Thrips supplied with pollen exhibited highest and sustained levels of egg production in comparison to other diets. Larval mortality was lowest and development time fastest on diets of pollen and sucrose or fruit juice in comparison to other plant tissues. Larval development time was similar on four species of pollen.  相似文献

Summary Modified B S translocation males were developed at 26.0° C where univalentbearing gametes are recovered with less than half the frequency than at 18.0° C. Upon eclosion the males were stored for definite time periods at either temperature before mating individually to single y free-X females. the transfer cultures of the females show a higher frequency of recovery of univalent-bearing progeny regardless of the temperature or storage treatment of the male. In addition, postmeiotic temperature treatment does not appear to fundamentally alter the overall frequency of recovery of univalent-bearing gametes which is presumably determined by the developmental temperature of the male. A similar trend is observed for matings of y females to single X.YSYL/O males in which the males were developed and stored at 26.0° C; namely, a higher frequency of recovery of attached-XY gametes in the transfer cultures.  相似文献

Summary Eggs ofAlligator mississippiensis were incubated at 30 °C and 33 °C throughout incubation up to hatching. Every four days several eggs were opened and the albumen, yolk and extra-embryonic fluids removed and weighed. The embryo was removed and fixed prior to being staged, weighted and measured for various morphometric criteria. Development at 33 °C was accelerated compared with 30 °C in terms of yolk and albumen utilization and embryo growth. Significant losses in yolk mass did not occur until stage 22 at 33 °C but occurred at stage 18 at 30 °C. Different patterns in growth were observed in embryos at the two temperatures at similar morphological stages: between stages 18 and 22 embryos at 33 °C were smaller (in mass and length) compared with embryos at 30 °C despite being morphologically similar. The differences in growth and physiology between embryos at 30 °C (females) and 33 °C (males) were dependent on incubation temperature but not sex. Incubation at 33 °C accelerated both growth and development inAlligator; initially morphogenesis was accelerated by the higher temperature but later, growth rate was accelerated.  相似文献

Body temperature, oxygen consumption, respiratory and cardiac activity and body mass loss were measured in six females and four males of the subterranean Zambian mole rat Cryptomys sp. (karyotype 2 n=68), at ambient temperatures between 10 and 35°C. Mean body temperature ranged between 36.1 and 33.2°C at ambient temperatures of 32.5–10°C and was lower in females (32.7°C) than in males (33.9°C) at ambient temperatures of 10°C but dit not differ at thermoneutrality (32.5°C). Except for body temperature, mean values of all other parameters were lowest at thermoneutrality. Mean basal oxygen consumption of 0.76 ml O2·g-1· h-1 was significantly lower than expected according to allometric equations and was different in the two sexes (females: 0.82 ml O2·g-1·h-1, males: 0.68 ml O2·g1·h-1) but was not correlated with body mass within the sexes. Basal respiratory rate of 74·min-1 (females: 66·min1, males: 87·min-1) and basal heart rate of 200·min-1 (females: 190·min-1, males: 216·min-1) were almost 30% lower than predicted, and the calculated thermal conductance of 0.144 ml O2·g-1·h1·°C-1 (females; 0.153 ml O2·g-1·h-1·°C-1, males: 0.131 ml O2·g-1·h-1·°C-1) was significantly higher than expected. The body mass loss in resting mole rats of 8.6–14.1%·day-1 was high and in percentages higher in females than in males. Oxygen consumption and body mass loss as well as respiratory and cardiac activity increased at higher and lower than thermoneutral temperatures. The regulatory increase in O2 demand below thermoneutrality was mainly saturated by increasing tidal volume but at ambient temperatures <15°C, the additional oxygen consumption was regulated by increasing frequency with slightly decreasing tidal volume. Likewise, the additional blood transport capacity was mainly effected by an increasing stroke volume while there was only a slight increase of heart frequency. In an additional field study, temperatures and humidity in different burrow systems have been determined and compared to environmental conditions above ground. Constant temperatures in the nest area 70 cm below ground between 26 and 28°C facilitate low resting metabolic rates, and high relative humidity minimizes evaporative water loss but both cause thermoregulatory problems such as overheating while digging. In 13–16 cm deep foraging tunnels, temperature fluctuations were higher following the above ground fluctuations with a time lag. Dominant breeding females had remarkably low body temperatures of 31.5–32.3°C at ambient temperatures of 20°C and appeared to be torpid. This reversible hypothermy and particular social structure involving division of labour are discussed as a strategy reducing energy expenditure in these eusocial subterranean animals with high foraging costs.Abbreviations BMR basal metabolic rate - br breath - C thermal conductance - HR neart rate - LD light/dark - M b body mass - MR metabolic rate - OP oxygen pulse - PCO2 partial pressure of carbon dioxide - PO2 partial pressure of oxygen - RMR resting metabolic rate - RR respiratory rate - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - TNZ thermal neural zone - O2 oxygen consumption  相似文献

The brackish water copepod Eurytemora affinis is the most abundant copepod species in the low salinity zone (2-15) of the Seine estuary. Despite its ecological importance, little is known about its population dynamics in the Seine. We studied the effects of temperature (10 °C and 15 °C) and salinity (5, 15 and 25) on reproduction under non-limiting food conditions. We used experiments to determine multiple reproductive parameters for E. affinis. In all experiments, we fed E. affinis a mixture of Rhodomonas marina and Isochrysis galbana. Couples of pre-adult females (C5) and adult males were mated until the female extruded a clutch of eggs and then individual females were observed every 6-12 hours until death to determine (a) embryonic development time, (b) inter clutch time and (c) clutch size throughout their adult lifespan. All reproductive parameters were negatively affected by low temperature (10 °C) and by high salinity (25). At 10 °C and a salinity of 25, mortality during the post-embryonic period was extremely high (85%). Differences in all reproductive parameters between salinities 5 and 15 were minimal. From 15 °C to 10 °C mean latency time (time between hatching of eggs and extrusion of new ones) increased from 0.8 to 2.25 days, the mean embryonic development time from 2.2 to 3.2 days and the mean clutch size decreased from 38 to 22 eggs female- 1. The mean clutch size decreased when females reached a critical age. The hatching success was high (near 95%) under all conditions except at high salinity. Egg production rates showed no significant differences between salinities 5 and 15 and were significantly higher at 15 °C (13 eggs female- 1 day- 1 at salinity 5 and 15) than at 10 °C (4 eggs female- 1 day- 1). These values at 15 °C were higher compared to those from other populations of E. affinis in estuaries or lakes. The high reproductive potential of E. affinis from the Seine estuary at 15 °C and low salinities explain its high densities in the low salinity zone during spring and early summer.  相似文献

1. The anostracan fairy shrimp Branchinecta gaini inhabits one of the most hostile environments on earth, living in pools and lakes in Antarctica. Between January 2002 and January 2003 temperatures in two pools where B. gaini are extremely abundant on Adelaide Island ranged from ?18.6 to ?15.7 °C in winter, to 19.4 to 17.1 °C in summer, whilst air temperatures ranged from ?34 to 6.3 °C. 2. Branchinecta gaini survives winter as cysts, but endures large summer temperature fluctuations as adults. Cysts froze between ?24.4 and ?25.7 °C. In experiments adults survived 0–10 °C with no mortality for 1 week, 25 °C for nearly 48 h with 50% mortality, and at 32 °C complete mortality occurred in <1 h. 3. Oxygen consumption (M?O2) in B. gaini approximately doubled for every 10 °C temperature rise (Q10 = 2.04) up to 20 °C where it reached a peak. Females had, on average 19% higher M?O2 than males. Females also had greater metabolic scopes, (maximum–minimum M?O2 across temperatures was ×3.6 for females, ×3.1 for males). 4. Ventilation frequency increased linearly with temperature, and did not decline at 25 °C, indicating animals were ‘trying’ progressively harder to supply oxygen to tissues, and oxygen deficiency was the probable cause of death. Females had a higher ventilation frequency than males (8.6–17.1% higher) and they also exhibited greater scope to raise ventilation frequency (×2.4 for females versus ×1.5 for males). 5. Great metabolic flexibility allows B. gaini to exploit extreme, highly fluctuating environments, and larger ventilatory and respiratory scopes allow females to survive higher temperatures than males. Because of this flexibility their prospects for coping with physical environmental change are high.  相似文献

Habitat preference, seasonal occurrence, starvation resistance, hatching eggs ofBranchipus schaefferi, and effects of predation onB. schaefferi were studied.Branchipus was only present in turbid, unvegetated ponds and absent in ponds which contain higher aquatic vegetation and theSpirogyra sp. The first individuals ofB. schaefferi appeared in April when water temperature was 10 °C and the last adults in November at a water temperature of 3.5 °C. Up to 6 reproducing generations were observed during this period. Abundance ofB. schaefferi was higher in temporary ponds than in permanent ponds. Sex ratio was close to unity for most of the year. Body size ofB. schaefferi males and females was significantly positively correlated with pond volume. Without foodB. schaefferi could survive for 1.5 to 2 days at 20 °C and 4 to 5 days at 10 °C. Hatching success of eggs decreased when eggs were dried for 7 months. Freezing of eggs had no effect on hatching success. From] the predators tested,Chaoborus sp. larvae clearly selected smallB. schaefferi; one consumed approximately 6Branchipus d–1 at a density of 6 to 12 prey 1–1. The other predators, dragonfly larvae, and larvae and adults ofTriturus alpestris selected alternative prey types, for exampleTubifex sp. and ostracods.  相似文献

Summary Two temperature-sensitive sex-linkedgrandchildless (gs)-like mutations (gs(1)N26 andgs(1)N441) were induced by ethylmethane sulphonate inDrosophila melanogaster. They complemented each other and mapped at two different loci (1–33.8±0.7 forgs(1)N26 and 1–39.6±1.7 forgs(1)N441), which were not identical to those of any of thegs-like mutants reported in earlier work.Homozygous females of the newly isolated mutants produced eggs that were unable to form pole cells and developed into agametic adults. Competence of the embryos to form pole cells was not restored by wild-type sperm in either mutant; that is, the sterility caused by these mutations is controlled by a maternal effect.Fecundity and fertility ofgs(1)N26 females were low, and their male offspring showed a higher mortality than that of female offspring, causing an abnormal sex ratio. The frequency of agametic progeny was 93.1% and 55.8%, when the female parents were reared at 25° C and 18° C, respectively. In eggs produced by thegs(1)N26 females reared at 25° C, the migration of nuclei to the posterior pole was abnormal, and almost no pole cell formation occurred in these egg. Furthermore, half of these eggs failed to cellularize at the posterior pole. When the females were reared at 18° C, almost all of the eggs underwent complete blastoderm formation, and in half of these blastoderm embryos normal pole cells were formed. In the other mutant,gs(1)N441, the fecundity and fertility of the females were normal. The agametic frequency in the progeny was 70.8% and 18.6% when the female parents were reared at 25° C and 18° C, respectively. In the eggs laid by females reared either at 25° C or at 18° C, the migration of nuclei to the periphery and cellularization proceeded normally; nevertheless, in the majority of the embryos no pole cell formation occured at the stage when nuclei penetrated into the periplasm. When the females were reared at 18° C, some of the embryos from these females formed some round blastoderm cells with cytologically recognizable polar granules and nuclear bodies, which are attributes of pole cells. The temperature sensitive period ofgs(1)N441 was estimated to extend from stage 9 to 13 of King's stages of oogenesis.  相似文献

Summary Pterostichus oblongopunctatus belongs to the type of spring breeding carabids with adult hibernation. Ovarian maturation is under the control of photoperiod: the females need a change of day length to mature. The first step of egg maturation (previtellogenesis) is bound to short day, the second step (vitellogenesis) to long day.The short day effect is achieved almost only at temperatures of 10 to 15°C; it is completely suppressed by 20°.The males mature under very different photoperiods and temperatures, but long day diminishes the percentage of mature males slightly, as well as does the higher temperature of 20°C in short day as compared with 15°C.Simulation of climatic conditions as experienced by the beetles from autumn throughout winter until spring in the laboratory showed that a short span of favourable temperatures at short day as experienced in nature in autumn allows the females to accomplish the short day development. But this maturation effect is still more diminished the longer temperatures below 5°C act on the beetles. Following that, a second period of temperatures between 10–15°C must restore the short day maturation effect if full maturity shall be gained in the following long day.The beetles are able to store reserve materials under long day at 20°C. After such a period they are able to have a normal previtellogenesis in spite of a severe shortage of food during short day. These experiments indicate that the failure in short day development outside the temperature range of 10–15°C is not a matter of an especially well balanced over-all metabolism in this favourable temperature range. It seems rather that hormonal systems involved in the short day phase of oogenesis act only within this span of temperature.Supportet by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.  相似文献

Summary The respiration rate of all stages of Cyclops bicuspidatus (s. str.) (Claus), a benthic copepod, from Esthwaite Water in the English Lake District, was determined at a range of field temperatures, 4° C–12° C, using cartesian diver microrespirometry. The population of C. bicuspidatus in Esthwaite Water was found to be adapted to low temperatures, with an optimum rate of metabolism at 8° C. Weight varied with temperature, in general the largest weights occurred at the lower temperatures. Adult males had higher rates of respiration than adult females, which were on average twice the size of males. Gravid and non-gravid females had similar levels of metabolism. Regression coefficients (b), derived from regressions of log oxygen consumption against log dry weight were low, ranging between 0.25–0.51 according to temperature.  相似文献

Nymphal development of Cacopsylla moscovita (And.) (Homoptera: Psylloidea) takes place only on female catkins of Salix repens L. and close phenological synchrony is crucial because development times of catkins and nymphs are similar. Eggs are laid on catkins as soon as they develop and close synchrony between oviposition and budburst maximizes time available for nymphal development. Sampling adult C. moscovita in the field revealed little synchrony between egg development and budburst, with over 60% of females containing mature eggs four weeks before catkins first appeared. In the laboratory, egg development was influenced by both temperature and photoperiod. At 10°C, egg development occurred approximately one month earlier than at 5°C and two weeks earlier than in the field. Adult survival in the laboratory was substantially reduced at increased temperature, with only 20% of adults surviving longer than two weeks at 10°C, compared with over 95% at 5°C. Body condition (weight corrected for size) of males and females decreased significantly in the field over winter. However, body condition of females levelled off before budburst, coincident with egg development implying that females had resumed feeding. We discuss our results in relation to regulation of phenological synchrony between oviposition and catkin appearance.  相似文献

The life-cycle of Apatania fimbriata (Pictet, 1843) (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) was studied in the Breitenbach (Hesse, Federal Republic of Germany) and in the laboratory at 6 °C, 10 °C and 14 °C at 14 h day length. Embryogenesis was mainly temperature dependent in the 4 °C–18 °C range. At a constant 22 °C embryos developed to well-differentiated larvae which did not hatch. In the laboratory experiments, developmental rates increased with increasing temperature (6 °C, 10 °C and 14 °C); larvae went through a dormancy in the third and fourth larval instars; in the field this occurred between November and February. The dormancy synchronized the larval development. Laboratory studies led to the conclusion that the dormancy was not temperature dependent but endogenously determined. The emergence pattern of adults showed a clear diurnal pattern, with a maximum emergence approximately two hours after sunset. A comparison of several years emergence studies showed a decreasing number of females with increasing distance from the spring. A comparison of the dry weight of females between two traps at the stream showed a significantly higher weight from the downstream site. For males no between-site differences were observed.  相似文献

Variability in the chirp rate of the male song of the ephippigerine speciesEphippigerida taeniata during intraspecific communication was investigated in the laboratory. Conspecific chirps were used as auditory stimuli. The stimulus rate was controlled by computer. Experiments were carried out at 19, 27, and 35°C. Acoustically isolated males ofE. taeniata sang with a relatively constant chirp rate, which depended on the ambient temperature. Chirp rate significantly increased with rising temperature from 19 to 27°C, whereas at 35°C the chirp rate did not differ significantly from that at 27°C. Male chirp rates were affected by stimulus rates. Males significantly increased their chirp rate in response to increasing stimulus rates at temperatures of 19 and 27°C. At 35°C the increase in the chirp rate was not significant. At 27 and 35°C males sang with a higher chirp rate than the stimulus rate within a certain range. Evaluating stimulus and response chirp pattern when the males increased their chirp rate in response to the stimulus rate showed that an alternation pattern was established. More than 50% of the male chirps occurred at a characteristic time range at around 40% of the interstimulus interval, which was slightly affected by temperature.  相似文献

As part of a study on passive physical control of house-dust mites, a total of 6000 eggs from a population ofDermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart, 1897) from 17-year-old laboratory cultures were incubated at 60 temperature and relative humidity combinations between 10–35°C and 55–100% RH. Eggs hatched at every combination, although mortality and development time increased between 10–20°C and 30–35°C and below 65% RH. Optimum conditions were 35°C and 80–85% RH. In temperate dry conditions, eggs from a wild population were found to be more resistant to mortality: they developed faster, with 7 times lower mortality than eggs from the laboratory population. This may have been because the laboratory population had become acclimated to the constant near-optimum conditions at which it was kept. Therefore it has been suggested that where laboratory cultures have been used in studies relating to passive physical control, caution should be taken in applying the conclusions to wild populations in the natural house-dust environment.  相似文献
