Population structure, growth and body composition (wet-, dry-, ash weight and total lipid) of the Arctic pelagic amphipod Themisto libellula were studied in four fjords on West Spitsbergen, Svalbard, from July to December 2000 and in April 2002. In one of the fjords, Kongsfjorden, growth of T. libellula was calculated as the change in mean length of the 0+ cohort from July to December. The young were released from the brood pouches in early spring (March–April). Summer growth was 3.5 mm month−1, whereas growth during the autumn was only 0.6 mm month−1. The size frequency distributions indicated a 2–2.5 year life-span. The size structure of the population in Hornsund, the southernmost fjord on Spitsbergen, indicated a delayed time of spawning. The storage of lipids in T. libellula occurred during late summer and towards the winter, when the food items contain the maximum amount of stored lipids.  相似文献

Life-history traits of kite skates Dipturus chilensis were examined from two regions (c. 2286 km apart) in the sheltered fjords and channels of southern Chile. A total of 482 and 403 specimens were collected from the southern fjords (c. 42–46° S) and the fjords of Chilean Patagonia (c. 51–54° S), from September 2003 to 2004, respectively. Vertebra marginal increment analysis indicated an annual deposition of growth rings which was completed during the winter months. For each region, von Bertalanffy growth parameters showed that females attained a larger asymptotic size, L, had a lower growth coefficient, K, and lived longer than males. Growth analysis indicated that D. chilensis from the Patagonian fjords had a longer life span (females: 22 v. 21 years; males 19 v. 17 years), attained a larger L (females: 150 v. 136 cm; males: 122 v. 118 cm total length, LT) and had a lower K value (females: 0·087 v. 0·104; males: 0·110 v. 0·116) than their counterparts in the southern fjords. Comparisons with previous studies indicated that D. chilensis from both southern and Patagonian sheltered fjords had larger L, and grew more slowly than their counterparts from central-southern Chile (L= 119–123 cm, K= 0·123–0·127), suggesting latitudinal variations in growth. Females attained sexual maturity later than males in both regions. For both sexes, lengths at 50% maturity (L50%) between regions were similar (females: c. 103 cm; males: c. 87 cm LT); however, D. chilensis from Patagonia appeared to mature 1 year earlier (females: 13 v. 14 years; males: 10 v. 11 years). Specimens from Patagonia had a lower ovarian fecundity than those from the southern fjords. An increase in the proportion of mature females and males during summer, suggests that the reproductive peak occurs in this season, and no regional differences were found. The size of the egg cases increased with maternal LT and these were longer in Patagonia. The information provided here represents the first evidence of regional variations in life-history traits for elasmobranchs in the south-eastern Pacific.  相似文献

We report data of a naturally occurring radionuclide, 234Th, an in situ tracer, to investigate vertical export of biogenic matter during a vernal bloom of Phaeocystis pouchetii in the fjords of northern Norway. To optimise sampling of different stages of the bloom, three fjords with increasing oceanic influence (Balsfjord, Malangen fjord and Ullsfjord, respectively) were investigated in April 1997. Contrasting situations were encountered between the three fjords: the proliferation of P. pouchetii in Ullsfjord surface waters coincided with a drastic reduction of particulate 234Th fluxes in traps, although particulate organic carbon (POC) and dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) were exported and 234Th was available in surface waters. When large colonies make up a significant fraction of the vertical flux, as observed in Ullsfjord in April 1997, there may be a large and rapid change in the POC/234Th ratio, further complicating the use of 234Th as a tracer for POC export. The results suggest that the proliferation of Phaeocystis pouchetii during vernal bloom could temporary increase OC/234Th ratio of particles and delay the particulate export of 234Th, and probably of other particle-reactive species, from surface waters.  相似文献

The detection of sparse Alexandrium catenella-resting cysts in sediments of southern Chilean fjords has cast doubts on their importance in the recurrence of massive toxic dinoflagellate blooms in the region. The role of resting cysts and the existence of different regional Chilean populations was studied by culturing and genetic approaches to define: (1) cyst production; (2) dormancy period; (3) excystment success; (4) offspring viability and (5) strain mating compatibility. This study newly revealed a short cyst dormancy (minimum 69 days), the role of key abiotic factors (in decreasing order salinity, irradiance, temperature and nutrients) controlling cyst germination (max. 60%) and germling growth rates (up to 0.36–0.52 div. day−1). Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) characterization showed significant differences in genetic distances (GD) among A. catenella populations that were primarily determined by the geographical origin of isolates and most likely driven by oceanographic dispersal barriers. A complex heterothallic mating system pointed to variable reproductive compatibility (RCs) among Chilean strains that was high among northern (Los Lagos/North Aysén) and southern populations (Magallanes), but limited among the genetically differentiated central (South Aysén) populations. Field cyst surveys after a massive 2009 bloom event revealed the existence of exceptional high cyst densities in particular areas of the fjords (max. 14.627 cysts cm−3), which contrast with low cyst concentrations (<221.3 cysts cm−3) detected by previous oceanographic campaigns. In conclusion, the present study suggests that A. catenella resting cysts play a more important role in the success of this species in Chilean fjords than previously thought. Results from in vitro experiments suggest that pelagic–benthic processes can maintain year-round low vegetative cell concentrations in the water column, but also can explain the detection of high cysts aggregations after the 2009-bloom event. Regional drivers that lead to massive outbreaks, however, are still unknown but potential scenarios are discussed.  相似文献

Several nuclear RFLP loci have been discovered recently that exhibit extensive allele frequency variation among Norwegian coastal and north-east Arctic populations of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. One of these polymorphisms was detected by hybridizing an anonymous cDNA clone (GM798) against genomic DNA digested with the restriction enzyme DraI. This cDNA clone has now been sequenced and identified as synaptophysin (Syp I), an integral synaptic vesicle membrane protein. Primers were constructed that amplify an intron of the Syp I gene that is polymorphic for the DraI site, thus making it possible to use a PCR-based assay to score the polymorphism. A total of 965 individuals sampled from the Barents Sea, coastal areas and fjords in northern Norway have been analysed for this polymorphism. The results confirm that highly significant differences exist between NE Arctic and coastal cod at the Syp I locus. A cluster analysis revealed a deep split between coastal and Arctic populations and hierarchical F-statistics indicated that about 40% of the total variation was attributable to differences between Arctic and coastal groups. The temporal stability of allele frequencies was assessed by comparing Syp I allele frequencies among samples of juveniles (0 group) captured at specific locations in fjords in consecutive years and among samples of adults and juveniles collected from the same fjord. Samples of juveniles collected in 1994 and 1995 in Malangen were genetically indistinguishable whereas juveniles sampled from Dønnesfjord and Ullsfjorden over the same 2-year period exhibited significant differences. Adults and 0-group individuals collected from the same fjord were found to be genetically indistinguishable in Malangen, but not in Balsfjorden. In addition to detecting large differences among Arctic and coastal groups, the Syp I locus suggests that genetic heterogeneity exists among resident populations of cod in different fjords and that gene flow among populations throughout northern Norway may be considerably lower than previously believed.  相似文献

Studies of the phytoplankton ecology in different localities in north-Norwegian fjords, the White Sea and the Barents Sea were carried out in spring and early summer to investigate the contribution of single and colonial stages of Phaeocystis pouchetii to phytoplankton abundance. Three different types of flagellated and four colonial cells were observed in all localities. P. pouchetii was rare under the ice of the Barents and White Seas, but their abundance increased rapidly during ice retreat. Single cell C dominated over colonial cell C, often by 50 times or more. The highest share of colonial cells was encountered in April in northern Norwegian fjords, in May in the Barents Sea and in May–June in the White Sea. At times the single cell dominated the total P. pouchetii biomass in Balsfjord (April 1999, 2001) with hardly any colonies present. In the White Sea colonies of P. pouchetii were less abundant than in the other regions. Cell carbon of P. pouchetii colonies appears never to be as dominating in the north-eastern North Atlantic as P. globosa blooms in coastal regions such as the southern North Sea. However, the lobal matrix of P. pouchetii colonies appears to be less solid than that of P. globosa and partly dissolution of the colony matrix during handling and storage of fixes samples induces uncertainty about the absolute numbers of P. pouchetii colonial cell counts. Despite of that, single cells of P. pouchetii seem to dominate significantly over colonial cell biomass at most sites and during some years and in some regions colonial cells seem rare. We speculate that top-down regulation of Phaeocystis spp. blooms possibly determines the ratio between single and colonial cells.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples collected from the fjord region of southern Chile (47° to 54° South) were analyzed for benthic foraminifera. A total of 175 species were identified including agglutinated and calcareous benthic taxa. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the foraminiferal data resulted in the recognition of three distinct biofacies: inner-fjord, intermediate fjord and channel, and oceanic biofacies, geographically controlled by relative position between the Pacific Ocean and fjord heads. Similarity percentage (SIMPER) analysis identified key taxa in the definition of the biofacies that include Globocassidulina rossensis, Cassidulina laevigata and Bulimina notovata. Principal components analysis resulted in two principal components representing sediment size, and bottom water temperature and salinity.Regional distributions are strongly controlled by the oceanographic conditions influenced from the Pacific in the west and the glacial/freshwater input from the east. Localized distributions of foraminifera are controlled by conditions influenced by the physiography of the individual fjords and channels. The distribution of Chilean fjord foraminifera and their environmental associations are consistent with results from other temperate to high latitude fjord foraminiferal studies.  相似文献

Materials of preliminary investigations of the life strategy of mykiss Parasalmo mykiss and trout Salmo trutta introduced to water bodies of Chili are considered. Analysis of the structure of scales demonstrated that, in mykiss and trout, the estuarine and riverine-estuarine types of life strategy prevail. This seems to be related to good feeding conditions in fjords. The hypothesis is suggested that, in the area of Chilean fjords, the successful introduction to rivers and artificial rearing in cages in brackish water resulted in the formation of a peculiar and highly dynamic population system. Elements of this system are from both fish of natural self-reproducing populations and fish grown in cages. There is a continuous exchange with genetic information between them as the fish that have escaped from cages attain maturity, arrive to rivers for spawning, and reproduce together with wild fish.  相似文献

Global‐scale gene flow is an important concern in conservation biology as it has the potential to either increase or decrease genetic diversity in species and populations. Although many studies focus on the gene flow between different populations of a single species, the potential for gene flow and introgression between species is understudied, particularly in seabirds. The only well‐studied example of a mixed‐species, hybridizing population of petrels exists on Round Island, in the Indian Ocean. Previous research assumed that Round Island represents a point of secondary contact between Atlantic (Pterodroma arminjoniana) and Pacific species (Pterodroma neglecta and Pterodroma heraldica). This study uses microsatellite genotyping and tracking data to address the possibility of between‐species hybridization occurring outside the Indian Ocean. Dispersal and gene flow spanning three oceans were demonstrated between the species in this complex. Analysis of migration rates estimated using bayesass revealed unidirectional movement of petrels from the Atlantic and Pacific into the Indian Ocean. Conversely, structure analysis revealed gene flow between species of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with potential three‐way hybrids occurring outside the Indian Ocean. Additionally, geolocation tracking of Round Island petrels revealed two individuals travelling to the Atlantic and Pacific. These results suggest that interspecific hybrids in Pterodroma petrels are more common than was previously assumed. This study is the first of its kind to investigate gene flow between populations of closely related Procellariiform species on a global scale, demonstrating the need for consideration of widespread migration and hybridization in the conservation of threatened seabirds.  相似文献

Trace element signatures of otolith edges and cores from 335 austral hake (Merluccius autralis) were analysed using LA-ICPMS from samples collected in Chilean and Falkland Islands'' waters, in order to provide potential insights into stock discrimination and migrations. Fish were caught in two locations in Chile and four locations in the south-west of the Falkland Islands Shelf. Univariate and multivariate analyses of trace element signatures in the edges of otoliths, representing adult fish, were not able to distinguish between samples collected in Chile and the Falkland Islands. Cluster analyses based on Ward’s similarity/distance metric suggested that it was possible to identify two groups from core signatures. Further analyses of this perceived clustering of the core concentrations revealed that this was largely due to the wide spread of Sr/Ca ratios in the otoliths’ cores. Gaussian finite mixtures using MCMC methods confirmed that Sr/Ca ratios form two separate distributions with significantly different mean values while concentrations of other elements showed no evidence of the presence of two or more distributions. The results suggest that there is only one spawning stock of austral hake with spawning situated in and around the Chilean fjords (43°30’S– 47°S) and the variation in Sr/Ca ratios likely suggests complex salinity structuring in this area.  相似文献

Growth patterns of two common circumpolar bivalves, the Greenland cockle (Serripes groenlandicus), and the hairy cockle (Clinocardium ciliatum) have been used in previous studies to reconstruct environmental conditions in the arctic. To date, there has been no direct determination that growth lines in either species are deposited periodically, and there has been no examination of factors affecting growth. We placed calcein-marked individuals of both species on oceanographic moorings in two fjords (Rijpfjord and Kongsfjord) in the Svalbard archipelago for one and two (Kongsfjord only) years. Growth patterns were compared with concurrent in situ temperature and fluorescence data in order to assess environmental controls on growth. Dark growth lines are evident on the outer shell surface and internally in shell cross section in both S. groenlandicus and C. ciliatum, and both species deposited only one line per year, unequivocally confirming that internal lines are deposited annually. Growth line deposition in both species began in late summer to early fall, before the seasonal decline in temperature. There was no difference in growth of S. groenlandicus between the two fjords despite differences in water temperature (3°C), fluorescence (nearly threefold) and the onset and duration of the winter season. C. ciliatum, however, grew approximately 2.8 times faster in the warmer, more food-rich Kongsfjord than in Rijpfjord. Subannual lines were counted in two individuals of each species from each fjord, but deposition of these lines was not clearly related to number of growing days estimated by temperature and fluorescence.  相似文献

Summary The nest-site preferences of six burrowing petrel species, Salvin's prion Pachyptila vittata salvini, blue petrel Halobaena caerulea, great-winged petrel Pterodroma macroptera, Kerguelen petrel Pterodroma brevirostris, soft-plumaged petrel Pterodroma mollis and white-chinned petrel Procellaria aequinoctialis, in the northeastern part of Marion Island (Prince Edward Island group, southern Indian Ocean) were analyzed by step-wise multiple regression. The nest-site characteristics measured were slope angle, soil depth and moisture content, percentage cover by stones or boulders and percentage cover by each of seven major plant species. The major nest-site preferences were: exposed areas with shallow soil (Salvin's prion); steep coastal slopes (blue petrel); sheltered well-drained slopes with deep soil (great-winged petrels); wet areas along drainage lines (Kerguelen petrel); steep slopes (soft-plumaged petrel); and areas with deep soil (white-chinned petrel). Similar species showed no significant avoidance of nest sites where there were burrows of potential competitors but did tend to nest spread out over different habitats. Burrow densities were determined in six habitat and seven vegetation types. Salvin's prion was the most abundant species (81% of burrows, with a maximum density of 279 burrows ha-1) and used both burrows and natural cavities for nesting. For all species combined, burrow densities at Marion Island were lower than in comparable habitats and vegetation types at neighbouring Prince Edward Island. Depredation by feral house cats Felis catus, absent from Prince Edward Island, is assumed to be largely responsible for this difference.  相似文献

Geographical variation of chromosomal structure in Drosophila gasici   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Drosophila gasici Brncic 1957, is a neotropical species found in several parts of the Andes Mountain System. By means of the analysis of their external characteristics, chromosomes and hybridization test they have been included in the mesophragmatica group of species of the sub-genus Drosophila. The present paper describes the mitotic and polytene chromosomes of D. gasici from samples of natural populations collected at Bogotá (Colombia), Cochabamba (Bolivia), Arica (Chile) and San Luis (Argentina). The comparative study of all these populations has disclosed that the species has split in well defined geographic races. The Colombian and Chilean flies differ from those living in Bolivia and Argentina by three independent inversions in chromosome I (the sexual pair). The only polymorphic populations seem to be the Chilean ones which exhibit two inversions in the second chromosome, besides the Standard gene arrangement. All the other populations are homozygous for all their chromosomal sequences. Studies on reproductive isolation have demonstrated that there is some sexual discrimination between the Colombian and Chilean flies in respect to the Bolivian and Argentinean ones. The populational structure of D. gasici is in contrast to that observed in the other six species belonging to the mesophragmatica group in which there are no good evidences of geographical variations at the chromosomal level. This article is dedicated to Professor Hans Bauer on the occasion of his 60th birthday.  相似文献

The Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is a predominantly Southeast Pacific Ocean species. It is relatively difficult to determine its age, and multiple studies of its growth off South America have produced markedly different sets of von Bertalanffy parameters. T. murphyi was first identified from New Zealand waters in the mid-1980s and has comprised part of the commercial landings of Trachurus species (along with Trachurus declivis and Trachurus novaezelandiae) since then. Results from 13 years of age determination of New Zealand samples using sectioned otoliths indicate that a partially validated age determination method has been developed, with a precision level (average percentage error) of 4.6%. The best available von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the New Zealand population (sexes combined) are as follows: L, 51.9 cm fork length; K, 0.223 per year; t0, −0.5 year. Analyses by sex showed that males have a significantly larger L than females. Estimated annual catch-at-length and catch-at-age distributions from the fishery are presented for 2007–2019. There have been at least two episodes of immigration of T. murphyi from international waters, but little evidence of spawning success to maintain the New Zealand population.  相似文献

Patagonian toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, collections (n = 186) from three distinct stocks (two subantarctic stocks and the stock within the Chilean ZEE) were analyzed for Hg concentration by DMA and comparisons were made by gender, total length (TL), wet weight (WW), and population. There was no difference between TL–WW relationships or Hg concentration by gender within any population across the range examined. The Chilean and Prince Edward Island fish had higher TL-adjusted total Hg concentration than those from the South Georgia and may suggest a possible human health risk. Explanation of these population differences in total Hg may be the actual sample areas and associated hydrogeographic and oceanographic conditions. For example, sampling sites for the Chilean fish lie well outside the Antarctic Convergence whereas the Prince Edward sites straddle the Convergence. The samples obtained from South Georgia lie well within the Antarctic convergence, suggesting that the Polar Front may provide some type of hydrographic barrier as has been shown for this species in terms of larval dispersal and feeding.  相似文献

Monothalamous (single-chambered) foraminifers are a major component of the benthic meiofauna in high latitude regions. Several morphologically similar species are common in the Arctic and Antarctic. However, it is uncertain whether these morphospecies are genetically identical, or whether their accurate identification is compromised by a lack of distinctive morphological features. To determine the relationship between Arctic and Antarctic species, we have compared SSU rDNA sequences of specimens belonging to four morphotaxa: Micrometula, Psammophaga, Gloiogullmia, and one morphospecies Hippocrepinella hirudinea from western Svalbard (Arctic) and McMurdo Sound (Antarctic). Wherever possible, we include in our analyses representatives of these taxa from the deep Arctic and Southern Oceans, as well as from Northern European fjords. We found that in all cases, the bipolar populations were clearly distinct genetically. As expected, Arctic specimens were usually more closely related to those from Northern Europe than to their Antarctic representatives. The deep-sea specimens from Weddell Sea branched as a sister to the McMurdo Sound population, while those from the Arctic Ocean clustered with ones from Norwegian fjords. Our study has revealed a high number of cryptic species within each of the examined genera, and demonstrates the unexplored potential of monothalamous foraminifers for use as a tool to evaluate the origin and biogeography of polar meiofauna.  相似文献

The encrusting soft coral Incrustatus comauensis is a common denizen of hard substrates in the shallow sub-tidal zone from the central Chilean fjords to the Cape Horn region of southern South America. DNA barcoding of specimens collected from the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, revealed the presence of a second, cryptic species of Incrustatus that is syntopic with I. comauensis. We describe Incrustatus niarchosi, a new species that can be distinguished morphologically from I. comauensis by differences in the microscopic ornamentation of the coenenchymal sclerites. To date, I. niarchosi n. sp. is known only from the Beagle Channel. A population of I. comauensis discovered in the intertidal zone in eastern Tierra del Fuego represents a new record of the species for that habitat and geographic region. Although the intertidal population is also distinct genetically, it is morphologically indistinguishable from sub-tidal Chilean populations of I. comauensis, and at present, there is insufficient evidence to support its status as a separate species.  相似文献

Evidence from a variety of sources indicates that selection has influenced synonymous codon usage in Drosophila. It has generally been difficult, however, to distinguish selection that acted in the distant past from ongoing selection. However, under a neutral model, polymorphisms usually reflect more recent mutations than fixed differences between species and may, therefore, be useful for inferring recent selection. If the ancestral state is preferred, selection should shift the frequency distribution of derived states/site toward lower values; if the ancestral is unpreferred, selection should increase the number of derived states/site. Polymorphisms were classified as ancestrally preferred or unpreferred for several genes of D. simulans and D. melanogaster. A computer simulation of coalescence was employed to derive the expected frequency distributions of derived states/site under various modifications of the Wright–Fisher neutral model, and distributions of test statistics (t and Mann–Whitney U) were derived by appropriate sampling. One-tailed tests were applied to transformed frequency data to assess whether the two frequency distributions deviated from neutral expectations in the direction predicted by selection on codon usage. Several genes from D. simulans appear to be subject to recent selection on synonymous codons, including one gene with low codon bias, esterase-6. Selection may also be acting in D. melanogaster. Bahía San Sebastián (BSS), a shallow and protected environment on the eastern coast of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), is a prime habitat for several species of nearctic migratory birds that visit the area during summer to feed in its huge intertidal mudflats. The area has also great economic value due to the extraction and transport of hydrocarbons. Twenty-three dredge stations were analysed and presence/absence data were used to classify stations and species by cluster analysis. Two algae and 113 taxa of macrobenthic invertebrates from 12 animal phyla were identified. Species richness was one order of magnitude higher (mean 29.0 sp st−1) in stations located outside or in the southern unprotected section of BSS than in most muddy or sandy stations within the bay (mean 3.7 sp st−1). Hard bottom stations outside BSS were dominated by a rich assemblage of sessile filter-feeders, mainly bryozoans, hydrozoans, ascidians, sponges, and the bivalve Aulacomya atra. Soft bottom areas inside BSS were mainly populated by relatively few species of deposit-feeders, such as the orbiniid polychaete Phylo felix, which was particularly frequent and widespread. Shells of the clam Mulinia edulis are very common, representing one of the few hard substrata available for sessile species on soft bottoms. Epibenthic assemblages within BSS were dominated by the detritivorous isopod Serolis paradoxa and the crab Eurypodius latreillei. The macrobenthic fauna of BSS can be regarded as typical of the Magellan region, showing affinities with those of other localities around Tierra del Fuego, the Straits of Magellan and the southern Chilean fjords.  相似文献
