Linear electron beam radiation was used to induce grafting of glycidyl methacrylate/β-cyclodextrin mixture onto cotton fabric. Chlorohexidin diacetate was incorporated to the cavities of cyclodextrin fixed on the cotton fabric to form an inclusion complex having antimicrobial activity. After incorporating chlorohexidin diacetate, the fabric was subjected to several washing cycles to examine the durability of the antimicrobial finishing. Control and grafted cotton fabrics (before and after loading with antimicrobial agent) were characterized for their antimicrobial activity against different kinds of bacteria and fungi.Grafted fabrics loaded with antimicrobial agent were found to show good antimicrobial activity in comparison with control and grafted fabrics which are not loaded with antimicrobial agent. The grafted fabrics loaded with antimicrobial agent were found also to exhibit good antimicrobial activity after five washings and this lasting antimicrobial activity can be attributed to the inclusion complex formed between chlorohexidin diacetate molecules and the cavities of cyclodextrin.  相似文献

This study aimed at improving the functionality of linen fabric by antimicrobial finishing with the use of ionic liquid, i.e., quaternary ammonium salt. Antimicrobial activity of ionic liquids strongly depends on their structure. An ammonium-based ionic liquid with nitrate anion named didecyldimethylammonium nitrate – [DDA][NO3] –was tested. The study included testing the susceptibility of linen fabric protected with this salt to the biodeterioration process with special attention paid to fungi resistance. Finished linen fabric was tested in relation to the action of five mildew mixtures. The degree of microorganism growth and its effect on physical–mechanical properties of the fabrics were evaluated. The antimicrobial effectiveness of ionic liquid applied to linen fabric was determined by the use of SEM. Applying this biocide in the finishing processes of natural textile materials allows the attainment of antimicrobial barrier properties.  相似文献

We measured the silver levels producedin vitro by three silver-coated fabrics, and the resulting antimicrobial effect onPseudomonas aeruginosa,Staphylococcus aureus, andCandida albicans. A significant enhancement of the fabrics' antimicrobial effect was achieved by the passage of weak DC currents, which cause increased liberation of silver ions. The antimicrobial effectiveness of each fabric depended on its textile characteristics. Thus, a silver-coated fabric could potentially serve as an antimicrobial dressing by continuously releasing silver ions into a wound either by passive dissociation or through electrical stimulation.Running Title: Antimicrobial Activity of Silver-Nylon  相似文献

1,2,3-Benzothiazole-7-thiocarboxylic acid-S-methylester (commercially known as Actigard® AM-87) was utilized to impart cotton fabric durable antimicrobial properties. Finishing treatment was carried out under a variety of conditions. The latter were included, effect of pH, concentration of antibacterial agents, curing temperature and curing time. The effect of fabric construction, mercerization, and dyeing with different dyestuff were also investigated. The study was also extended to investigate the technical feasibility of combining antimicrobial finishing treatment in question with other finishing treatment generally carried out on cotton fabric, like soft finishing and crease recovery finishing. The treated fabrics were monitored for antimicrobial properties before and after washing. The treated fabrics were also evaluated for the physio-mechanical properties like fabric tensile strength, elongation at break (or bursting strength for knitted fabric), wettability, crease recovery angle, whiteness index and roughness. Results obtained show that, the most appropriate conditions for treatment cotton fabric with Actigard® are: padding the cotton fabric in aqueous solution containing 6% Actigard® at pH 5 (adjusted using formic acid) then squeezed to wet pick up of 100%, dried at 80 °C for 5 min then cured at 100 °C for 150 s. The untreated cotton fabric did not show any antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli. Treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® improves its antimicrobial properties towards S. aureus or E. coli. It is also observed that, treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® marginally decreases fabric tensile strength, elongation at break, roughness and WI, whereas; both wettability and crease recovery angle remain practically intact. This was observed whether the fabric was pre-mercerized or not.  相似文献

The study was aimed at increasing the resistance of lignocellulosic textiles to bacteria and mould action using a biocide of plant origin. The biocide used in the study was thyme essential oil. This kind of oil is characterized by low toxicity for humans and the environment. The antimicrobial efficiency of thyme essential oil applied to linen–cotton blended fabric and linen fabric was evaluated by determining bacterial growth, degree of mould growth, and their impact on fabric strength. Thyme essential oil applied as 8% concentration in methanol to linen–cotton blended fabric showed very high antibacterial and antifungal activity – no mould growth and no significant loss of breaking force were observed. Microscopic evaluation of the tested fabrics was also performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Applying the eco-friendly biocide to fabrics containing natural fibres in the finishing process produces antimicrobial barrier properties.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial efficiency and color changes of cotton fabrics loaded with colloidal silver nanoparticles which were synthesized without using any stabilizer. The influence of colloidal concentration and consequently, the amount of silver deposited onto the fabric surface, on antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Candida albicans as well as laundering durability of obtained effects were studied. Although cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles from 10 ppm colloid exhibited good antimicrobial efficiency, their poor laundering durability indicated that higher concentrated colloids (50 ppm) must be applied for obtaining long-term durability. Additionally, the influence of dyeing with C.I. Direct Red 81 on antimicrobial activity of cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles as well as the influence of their presence on the color change of dyed fabrics were evaluated. Unlike color change, the antimicrobial efficiency was not affected by the order of dyeing and loading of silver nanoparticles.  相似文献

An antimicrobial finishing for cotton fabric was prepared from commercial (iSys AG, Germany) silver chloride (Ag) dispersed at different concentrations in a reactive organic–inorganic binder (RB) (iSys MTX (CHT, Germany). Pad-dry-cure and exhaustion methods were used for the sols application, giving Ag-RB coating with Ag concentration from ca. 48 to ca. 290 ppm on the cotton fabric. The presence of silver on the cotton finishes was confirmed by measuring its concentration in the fabrics with the help of inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The morphology of the finished fabrics was investigated by SEM, while their composition was established from EDXS measurements combined with the results of FT-IR spectral analysis. The antimicrobial activity of variously treated cotton fabrics was assessed before and after repetitive (up to 10×) washing by the application of standard tests: for the fungi Aspergillus niger (ATCC 6275) and Chaetomium globosum (ATCC 6205) by the modified DIN 53931 standard method, while the presence of Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) was followed by using ISO 20645:2004 (E) and AATCC 100-1999 standard methods. Results revealed that the antimicrobial activity of the coatings strongly depended on the concentration of Ag in the corresponding Ag-RB dispersions, indirectly depending on the preparation method (pad-dry-cure vs. exhaustion) and that the Ag-RB coatings were more effective for bacteria than for fungi. The Ag concentrations on the cotton fabrics achieved by the pad-dry-cure method (48 and 52 ppm) were not sufficient to impart satisfactory antifungal activity to the cotton fabrics, though they assured excellent reduction of the bacterium E. coli (98–100%). A minimal inhibitory concentration of Ag in the coating providing a sufficient bacterial reduction of 60% was ca. 24 ppm. Effective antifungal activity was achieved only by applying the exhaustion method, enabling high initial Ag concentration in the Ag-RB coating (>100 ppm). The antibacterial activity depended on the washing treatment. No antifungal activity was noted for washed cotton fabric, even those with highly concentrated Ag (290 ppm) in the Ag-RB coating, but a 94% bacterial reduction was obtained for the corresponding cotton fabric, after 10 repetitive washings, corroborated by the Ag concentration on washed fabric of about 65 ppm.  相似文献

Cotton fabrics were treated with finishing bath formulation containing emulsion lattices based on acrylate monomers, chitosan and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to provide cotton fabrics with antibacterial, UV-protection as well as improvement of dyeing properties with direct, acid and reactive dyes. The terpolymer emulsion, chitosan and PEG concentrations as well as fabric pretreatment with alkali significantly affected the performance properties, antimicrobial activity, UV-protection and dyeing behavior of treated cotton fabric. The finished fabrics were characterized in terms of FTIR, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break (%), abrasion resistance and air permeability. The obtained data showed that the tested fabrics have appropriate antibacterial activity with highly UV-protection properties with increasing chitosan concentration up to 3%. The mechanical properties expressed as tensile strength and abrasion resistance increased after finishing treatment. Moreover, the performance of the finished fabrics and dyeing properties with different dyes classes were greatly influenced by the action of alkali pretreatment of cotton fabrics, adding the polyethylene glycol to the finishing bath formulation as well as emulsion and chitosan concentrations.  相似文献

Chitosan, a naturally available biopolymer which is now increasingly being used as a functional finish on textile substrates to impart antimicrobial characteristics and increase dye uptake of fabrics was applied on wool fabrics. Henna a natural dye with proven bactericidal properties was applied on wool fabrics along with chitosan to impart antimicrobial characteristics. The effect of chitosan application on the dyeing properties of wool fabrics was studied by measuring the K/S values of the treated substrates at various concentrations of chitosan and the dye. The antimicrobial properties of chitosan and natural dyes both when applied independently and collectively on fabrics were assessed. The results proved that the chitosan treated wool fabrics showed increase dye uptake of fabrics. The treated fabrics were found to be antimicrobial and the chitosan treatment enhances the antimicrobial characteristics of the dyes. Fastness properties of the applied finish to washing, rubbing and perspiration have also been discussed.  相似文献

In most cases, fabrics such as curtains, skirts, suit pants and so on are draped under their own gravity parallel to fabric plane while the gravity is perpendicular to fabric plane in traditional drape testing method. As a result, it does not conform to actual situation and the test data is not convincing enough. To overcome this problem, this paper presents a novel method which simulates the real mechanical conditions and ensures the gravity is parallel to the fabric plane. This method applied a low-cost Kinect Sensor device to capture the 3-dimensional (3D) drape profile, thus we obtained the drape degree parameters and aesthetic parameters by 3D reconstruction and image processing and analysis techniques. The experiment was conducted on our self-devised drape-testing instrument by choosing different kinds of weave structure fabrics as our testing samples and the results were compared with those of traditional method and subjective evaluation. Through regression and correlation analysis we found that this novel testing method was significantly correlated with the traditional and subjective evaluation method. We achieved a new, non-contact 3D measurement method for drape testing, namely unidirectional fabric drape testing method. This method is more suitable for evaluating drape behavior because it is more in line with actual mechanical conditions of draped fabrics and has a well consistency with the requirements of visual and aesthetic style of fabrics.  相似文献

The waste biomass of Aspergillus niger, following citric acid production, was used as a source for fungal chitosan extraction. The produced chitosan was characterized with deacetylation degree of 89.6%, a molecular weight of 25,000 dalton, 97% solubility in 1% acetic acid solution and comparable FT-IR spectra to standard shrimp chitosan. Fungal chitosan was applied as a cotton fabric finishing agent using pad-dry-cure method. The topographical structure of chitosan-treated fabrics (CTF) was much improved compared with control fabrics. CTF, after durability tests, exhibited a powerful antimicrobial activity against both E. coli and Candida albicans, the captured micrographs for E. coli cells contacted with CTF showed a complete lysis of cell walls with the prolonging contact time. The produced antimicrobial CTF could be proposed as a suitable material for many medical and hygienic applications.  相似文献

beta-Cyclodextrin (beta-CD) can be easily grafted onto cellulosic textiles through covalent bonds. In such a way beta-CD empty cavities provide an efficient tool for entrapping different kinds of hydrophobic molecules on the surface of the fabric and releasing them slowly in time. The capability of cyclodextrins to include hydrophobic molecules such as fragrances, antimicrobial agents, and other chemicals can be then exploited to produce new grafted textiles with peculiar and useful performances. In this work we report the inclusion of two different products, the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin (PERM) and the insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), into beta-CD molecules grafted on cotton fabric. UV-vis spectrophotometry and thermal analysis confirmed the presence of the guest molecules on the fabric surface. Bioassays were carried out on two mosquito species of medical importance, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi; knock down effect and mortality were measured using standard World Health Organization (WHO) cone tests. Repellency and irritancy (blood feeding inhibition) were also measured using cage tests and a baited tunnel device. PERM-treated fabrics kept the insecticidal/irritant efficacy even for a long time after the treatment, whereas DEET activity lasted more shortly.  相似文献

AIMS: To develop and apply a quantitative protocol for assessing the transfer of bacteria from bleached and undyed fabrics of 100% cotton and 50% cotton + 50% polyester (poly cotton) to fingerpads or other pieces of fabric. METHODS AND RESULTS: Test pieces of the fabrics were mounted on custom-made stainless steel carriers to give a surface area of 1 cm in diameter, and each piece seeded with about 10(5) cfu of Staphylococcus aureus from an overnight broth culture; the inoculum contained 5% fetal bovine serum as the soil load. Transfer from fabric to fabric was performed by direct contact using moist and dry fabrics. Transfers from fabrics to fingerpads of adult volunteers were tested using moist, dry and re-moistened pieces of the fabrics, with or without friction during the contact. Bacterial transfer from fabrics to moistened fingerpads was also studied. All the transfers were conducted under ambient conditions at an applied pressure of 0.2 kg cm(-2). After the transfer, the recipient fingerpads or fabric pieces were eluted, the eluates spread-plated, along with appropriate controls, on tryptic soy agar and the percentage transfer calculated after the incubation of the plates for 24 h at 37 degrees C. CONCLUSION: Bacterial transfer from moist donor fabrics using recipients with moisture was always higher than that to and from dry ones. Friction increased the level of transfer from fabrics to fingerpads by as much as fivefold. Bacterial transfer from poly cotton was consistently higher when compared with that from all-cotton material. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The data generated should help in the development of better models to assess the role fabrics may play as vehicles for infectious agents. Also, the basic design of the reported methodology lends itself to work with other types of human pathogens.  相似文献

In this paper, the antibacterial activity against Bacillus pumilus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa of the wool fabrics treated with new antimicrobial bis-quaternary surfactants, DABK and DABB, is studied. The activity was established on the basis of the agar diffusion and protective antibacterial test results and on the basis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation. The results were compared with the HTAB, a monoquaternary surfactant of conventional use. The results from the agar diffusion and protective antibacterial tests do not enable us to confirm whether these compounds are potentially useful antimicrobial agents for the protection of textiles. However, SEM observations show clearly the efficacy of these compounds to protect the wool fabrics against the micro-organisms. SEM has been a useful technique for the assessment of antibacterial activity in textiles.  相似文献

Poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone functionalization was done for improved the dyeability of dichlorotriazine dyes on cotton fabric. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were padded on functionalized cotton fabrics to improve antibacterial activity. The modification effects were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and EDX studies. The antibacterial activity was done against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterium. The dye exhaustion and fastness properties were analyzed for dyeing with sodium chloride, sodium sulfate and trisodium citrate bio-salt as exhausting agents. The functionalized cotton fabric showed improved dye uptake and good fastness properties. Poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone with ZnO nanoparticles padded fabrics showed very good antibacterial activity.  相似文献

This research studied the adherent behaviour of gram-negative Escherichia coli on different weft knitted textile fabrics made of cotton, polyester filaments and polyester (staple)-cotton blended yarn. We compared the bacterial adherence of 18-h-old E. coli cells on all the three types of fabrics under the same experimental conditions. The maximum adherence was found in cotton, followed by the polyester blend; the least adherence was in polyester fabrics. Scanning electron micrographs showed that surface morphology of fabrics also plays an important role during adherence. Cotton fabric, with a rough surface, attracted more bacterial cells compared to the smooth polyester surface. Comparing the FTIR spectra of different fabrics and E. coli it was found that both cotton and E. coli have abundant free hydroxyl groups that may interact strongly with each other and with other hydrophilic groups such as carboxyl, phosphate, and amides. This may be one of the reasons for the greater adherence on cotton as compared to hydrophobic polyester fabric. Finally, the effect of bacterial adherence on loss of strength in different fabrics was analysed. It was found that the maximum decrease in strength occurred in cotton fabrics and the least in polyester fabrics. The present study suggests a procedure for quantifying bacterial adherence on different textile fabrics. This technique can be used with different bacterial strains and varieties of fabrics for quantifying the adherent bacterial cells, and would be of great use in developing and comparing different antimicrobial finished products of the textile industry.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the calcareous skeleton is described in twenty–one species of recent tubuliporine cyclostome bryozoans, using field emission SEM. The succession of skeletal fabrics in interior walls may be classified into four different fabric suites. The first–formed part of the calcitic skeleton in all species for which it has been observed is a precursory fabric of tiny, wedge–shaped crystallites. This is succeeded in about half of the species studied by a fabric of transverse fibres, followed by foliated fabric and often semi–nacre (fabric suite 1). Most of the remaining species lack transverse fibres and have interior walls largely comprising semi–nacre (fabric suite 2). A few species have skeletons consisting of predominantly distally–oriented, irregularly or regularly foliated fabric (fabric suite 3). A single species has a skeleton of proximally–oriented foliated fabric (fabric suite 4). Basal exterior walls in all species have a precursory fabric of tiny wedge–shaped crystallites without a strong preferred orientation, deposited directly upon the organic cuticle, followed by a layer of planar spherulitic structure, which in turn is succeeded by a similar fabric to that developed in the interior wall of the species concerned. Outermost layers of frontal exterior walls exhibit one of the following combinations of three fabrics: an outer layer of (1) finely granular or wedge–shaped crystallites; a thin dense granular layer followed by (2) distally accreting planar spherulitic fabric., or (3) obliquely accreting planar spherulitic fabric growing partly towards the midline of the frontal wall. Terminal diaphragms usually have outer layers dominated by planar spherulitic ultrastructure with centripetal growth directions. The fabric suites present in tubuliporines encompass most known fabrics found in the other cyclostome suborders and support the notion that this species–rich suborder occupies a central position in cyclostome evolution.  相似文献

Several benzophenone chromophoric groups were incorporated onto cotton fabrics by using 4-hydroxybenzophenone, 4,4′-dihydroxybenzophenone, 4-chloro-4′-hydroxybenzophenone, and 4-benzoylbenzoic acid as reagents. The fabric treatment was conducted by a pad-dry-cure method, and the benzophenone chromophoric group incorporated cotton fabrics were characterized and confirmed by FTIR. Tensile strengths of benzophenone chromophoric groups modified cotton fabrics were also measured. 4-Hydroxybenzophenone treated cotton fabric showed the most powerful antibacterial activity among all samples, and 4-benzoylbenzoic acid treated cotton fabric demonstrated pesticide degradation ability, under UV irradiation.  相似文献

The preparation of amino silicone based softeners with different emulsifiers was carried out and adsorbed onto the surfaces of cotton and blends of cotton/polyester fabrics. The softened fabrics have high surface area, so poorly performance in washing and rubbing fastness. It is obvious from the results of colorfastness to rubbing and washing that some of the samples of the dyed fabric treated with prepared softeners have shown some poor rating as compared to the untreated fabrics. However the other two samples have shown acceptable rubbing fastness results without losing softness and permanent handle. It can be observed that washing of the printed treated fabric remains unaffected almost in all the studied samples. Moreover, the application of the prepared softeners has imparted anti pilling property to the fabric. It can be seen that there is a remarkable increase in weights of treated fabrics as compared to the untreated fabrics.  相似文献
