Small field (less than 10 degrees) monocular neurons were electrophysiologically recorded from the rostral part of the frog's optic tectum. When tested with conventional stimuli, these neurons displayed rather common properties. Two main groups could nevertheless be defined. In group I neurons (30%), habituation to repetitive stimulations was present but the responses never disappeared completely. These neurons also showed brief OFF-ON responses to light spot stimulations. Group II neurons (70%) only responded to the first presentations of moving targets. Responses to light spot stimulation were different: 25% of them (group IIa) showed OFF-ON responses, 19% (group IIb) presented only OFF responses and 26% (group IIc) gave no response. The receptive fields had no null region and extended about equally in all directions. There was no correlation between RF diameters and response types. Small field visual neurons represented approximately 37.7% of the whole neuronal population. The problem of their place in the usually used classification is discussed.  相似文献

The larval proleg withdrawal reflex of the hawk moth, Manduca sexta, exhibits robust habituation. This reflex is evoked by deflecting one or more mechanosensory planta hairs on a proleg tip. We examined neural correlates of habituation in an isolated proleg preparation consisting of one proleg and its segmental ganglion. Repeated deflection of a single planta hair caused a significant decrease in the number of action potentials evoked in the proleg motor nerve (which carries the axons of proleg retractor motor neurons). Significant response decrement was seen for interstimulus intervals of 10 s, 60 s and 5 min. Response decrement failed to occur in the absence of repetitive stimulation, the decremented response recovered spontaneously following a rest, and electrical stimulation of a body wall nerve facilitated the decremented response (a neural correlate of dishabituation). Adaptation of sensory neuron responses occurred during repeated hair deflections. However, when adaptation was eliminated by direct electrical stimulation of sensory neurons, the response in the proleg motor nerve still decreased significantly. Muscle recordings indicated that the response of an identified proleg retractor motor neuron decreased significantly during habituation training. Thus, habituation of the proleg withdrawal reflex includes a central component that is apparent at the level of a single motor neuron. Accepted: 20 December 1996  相似文献

Dopamine has been implicated in the modulation of diverse forms of behavioral plasticity, including appetitive learning and addiction. An important challenge is to understand how dopamine's effects at the cellular level alter the properties of neural circuits to modify behavior. In the nematode C. elegans, dopamine modulates habituation of an escape reflex triggered by body touch. In the absence of food, animals habituate more rapidly than in the presence of food; this contextual information about food availability is provided by dopaminergic mechanosensory neurons that sense the presence of bacteria. We find that dopamine alters habituation kinetics by selectively modulating the touch responses of the anterior-body mechanoreceptors; this modulation involves a D1-like dopamine receptor, a Gq/PLC-beta signaling pathway, and calcium release within the touch neurons. Interestingly, the body touch mechanoreceptors can themselves excite the dopamine neurons, forming a positive feedback loop capable of integrating context and experience to modulate mechanosensory attention.  相似文献

Generalized convulsive seizures can be triggered by sensory stimuli in animals treated with subthreshold levels of convulsant drugs. The sensory responses of the brain-stem reticular formation (RF) are extensively enhanced before seizure initiation with bicuculline, strychnine, pentylenetetrazol, physostigmine, and several other convulsants. The responses of RF neurons are more greatly enhanced than other nonprimary neurons in the hippocampus, amygdala, and cortex. The action of systemically administered convulsants involves direct effects on reticular neurons, because RF response enhancement is also seen with iontophoresis. RF neuronal response enhancement does not appear to involve actions of convulsants on specific neurotransmitters, because agents that act on different transmitters enhance the responses of the same RF neuron when given sequentially. Anticonvulsant drugs reverse the effects of convulsants on reticular neurons. The convulsant-induced response enhancement in the RF may involve blockade of inhibitory postsynaptic potentials and/or threshold reduction, effects observed in vitro. RF neurons may be most susceptible to convulsant action because these agents block habituation and other mechanisms that normally restrict RF neuronal responsiveness. The massive synchronization of reticular neuronal firing by sensory stimuli may induce seizures by intense output over widespread RF projection pathways analogous to the afterdischarge seizures seen with electrical stimulation of the RF.  相似文献

Habituation (extinction) of postsynaptic unit responses of the cat motor cortex to repetitive electrodermal, photic, acoustic, and combined bimodal stimulation was investigated by intracellular recording. Habituation was shown by a decrease in the number of spikes per grouped discharge and a decrease in the amplitude and duration of the EPSPs, and sometimes IPSPs, on repetition of the stimulus. The way in which the course of habituation depends on the modality and duration of stimulation (at a constant frequency of 1/sec) is examined. Habituation of postsynaptic responses to sensory stimuli is observed with neurons of different functional groups, namely identified neurons of pyramidal tract and unidentified neurons, some of which were evidently pyramidal neurons and interneurons. The hypothesis is put forward that the habituation of PSPs of the cortical neurons is based on processes taking place mainly at the subcortical level.A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University. In Caenorhabditis elegans, a light touch induces a locomotor response. Repeated touches, however, result in an attenuation of response, that is, habituation. Withdrawal responses elicited by anterior touch are controlled by anterior mechanosensory neurons (AVM and ALMs), and by four pairs of interneurons (AVA, AVB, AVD, and PVC) (Chalfie et al., 1985; White et al., 1986). To identify the neurons that participate in habituation, we ablated these neurons with a laser microbeam and investigated the resulting habituation of the operated animals. The animals lacking both left and right homologues AVDLR were habituated more rapidly than intact animals. We propose that chemical synapses at AVD play a critical role in the habituation of intact animals.  相似文献

Unit activity of 46 pairs of neurons of sensorimotor cortex of rats was studied in a model situation of habituation to repetitive microiontophoretic applications of acetylcholine (ACh). The difference between the types of reactions to ACh of two neighbouring neurons recorded by the same microelectrode was observed on 37% of cases. The difference between the dynamics of activity of neurons with similar patterns of reactions during repetitive action of stimuli was also shown. Stability of the excitatory connections between two neighbouring neurons under the conditions when one of them demonstrated the habituation to repetitive action of ACh were indicated by analysis of cross-correlation histograms.  相似文献

During heteromodal extraneous stimulation (ES), a large part of responding neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus (RN) exhibit selectivity by responding with excitation to the stimulation of only one type of sensory input. To visual ES, 12 of 32 tested neurons responded; and 4 of 21 tested neurons responded to auditory ES. Response of neurons to ES diminished during the process of habituation to these stimuli; and after habituation was completed, the number of neurons responsive to the ES also diminished. Use of ES led to disappearance of high-frequency, grouped discharges in the responses of the RN neurons. Initial responses to ES and to the following conditioning stimulus (CS) appeared during external inhibition of the conditioned reflex (CR), but the later components of impulse responses that ordinarily accompany realized CR were suppressed in nearly one half of the studied neurons. We reach the conclusion that RN neurons participate in external inhibition of CR and in habituation to ES.A. A. Bogomolets Physiology Institute, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Kiev. Separate neuronal microsystems in the sensomotor cerebral cortex are able to exhibit the functional plasticity under conditions of repeated action of acetylcholine applied microiontophoretically. The characteristic properties of dynamics in activity of single cortex neurones are determined mainly by the initial reactivity to transmitter and by the state of nervous cells of the surrounding microsystem. The composition and succession of response components as well the duration of excitatory stage of reaction to acetylcholine serve as physiological markers of plastic properties of neurones in cortical microsystem.  相似文献

Examinations carried out on command neurons of defensive behavior in the edible snail using electrophysiological methods and a chlortetracycline fluorescent probe revealed that a single sensitizing action alters electrical neuronal activity and the amount of bound calcium in the cells. An initial increase in the amount of bound calcium (the first 15–20 min after the sensitizing action) coincides in time with depolarization, enhancement of plasma membrane excitability, and a decrease of amplitude and duration of the excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSP) induced by sensory stimulations. Repeated pronounced increase in the bound calcium level develops 50–60 min after the sensitizing action and correlates with facilitation of neuronal responses to sensory stimuli. Alterations in the bound calcium level in command neurons of defensive behavior in the course of sensitization development differed in dynamics and direction from the previously described bound calcium shifts in the same cells in the course of habituation development.P. Intracellular records from somata of FETi and SETi were performed during sinusoidal and rampwise stimulation of the femoral chordotonal organ. The responses were larger on average in SETi but this could be random. All other parameters (form of amplitude-frequency plot, phase-frequency plot, half-lives of rise and fall during ramp-wise stimulations) were not significantly different for both neurons. The responses of both neurons are symmetrical for stretch and release stimuli. Thus, these motor neurons are the decisive rectifiers for the extensor part of the femurtibia control loop. The habituation of FETi during repetitive stimulation is produced by a decrease in response amplitude together with a hyperpolarizing dc-shift. The imput of both neurons behaves like the output of a lead-lag-system with a predominant phasic component, whose high-pass filter has a time constant which depends on input slope. The nonlinear high-pass filter properties which are one important cause of catalepsy can thus be attributed to properties of interneurons and/or chordotonal organ. For most parts of the simulation of the femur-tibia control system (Cruse and Storrer, 1977) the anatomical and physiological correlates could be shown (Fig. 13).  相似文献

Four types of responses to iontophoretic application of serotonin were found in neurons of the ventral aspect of the visceral ganglion ofHelix pomatia. The responses differed in size, duration, latent periods, habituation to serotonin, and response to the action of serotonin antagonists (D-tubocurarine, tryptamine, neostigmine). Each type of response was evidently connected with a particular type of serotonin receptor. A scheme of distribution of the different types of serotonin receptors in the neurons of this region is drawn up.Institute of Psychiatry, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Study of opioid peptides (leucine-enkephalin and methionine-enkephalin) action on plastic properties of the system of monosynaptically connected neurones LPa7--LPa3, PPa3 and LPa8--LPa3, PPa3 was conducted in the snail brain. It has been shown that all three links in the system studied (presynaptic neurone, postsynaptic neurone and synapse) manifest one and the same type of plasticity--habituation to rhythmic stimulation. Enkephalins have a modulating action on plastic properties of the presynaptic neurone and synapse: they retard the habituation of the presynaptic neurone to intracellular stimulation and retard the development of habituation at synaptic level. However, changes in the character of postsynaptic response in the presence of enkephalins are not a direct consequence of their influence on plastic properties of the presynaptic neurone. Besides, enkephalines reduce the effectiveness of synaptic transmission in the given system: they reduce EPSP duration in the postsynaptic neurone.  相似文献

The siphon withdrawal response evoked by a weak tactile (water drop) or light stimulus is mediated primarily by neurons in the siphon. Central neurons (abdominal ganglion) contribute very little since the response amplitude and latency are not changed following removal of the abdominal ganglion. Similarly, habituation and dishabituation of this withdrawal response are not different after removal of the abdominal ganglion, indicating that the peripheral neural circuit in the isolated siphon can mediate habituation itself, and thus has many of the properties attributed to central neurons. Responses evoked by electrical stimulation of the siphon nerve habituate, depending upon the stimulus intensity and interval. These habituated responses may be dishabituated by tactile or light stimulation of the siphon. These results show that each neural system, peripheral and central, has an excitatory modulatory influence on the other. Normally adaptive siphon responses must be shaped by the integrated activity of both of these neural systems.  相似文献

Spontaneous activity of frontal cortical neurons (middle part of sulcus principalis) and their responses to stimuli of different biological significance were studied in alert monkeys. The region studied is characterized by a lower level of spontaneous activity than the motor cortex. Fluctuations in the level of spontaneous activity are connected with changes in the experimental situation. Two types of unit responses were distinguished to repetitive stimulation: preservation of responses and habituation. The type of unit response depends on the relationship of the stimuli to the animal's motivational sphere.A. A. Ukhtomskii Physiological Research Institute, A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University. Effect of the neuropeptide FMRFamide on two types of nerve cells differing in plastic properties: habituating and non-habituating to rhythmic intracellular stimulation, has been studied. FMRFamide causes a slow developing, continuously growing depolarisation and an increase of input resistance of the most part of habituating cells resulting in inhibition of their habituation to intracellular stimulation. No desensitisation of cells to the action of FMRFamide was observed. The data obtained by using Ca-ionophore, imidazole and caffeine show that the effect of the peptide may be caused by inhibition of Ca-dependent K-conductance and depends on cAMP metabolism. FMRFamide exerts a less pronounced action on non-habituating cells and does not change their plastic properties. Inhibition by FMRFamide of the habituation at the level of electroexcitable membrane may play a significant part in regulation of neuronal plasticity.  相似文献

Habituation of the Aplysia gill-withdrawal reflex (and siphon-withdrawal reflex) has been attributed to low-frequency homosynaptic depression at central sensory-motor synapses. The recent demonstration that transfer of habituation between stimulation sites occurs in this model system has prompted the hypothesis that heterosynaptic inhibitory pathways also play a role in the mediation of habituation behavior. To test this hypothesis, the sites and mechanisms of neural plasticity which underlie transfer of habituation in Aplysia were examined. Transfer of habituation is a reduction in the reflex evoked at one stimulation site (siphon) due to repeated presentation of a stimulus to a second site (gill). Centrally mediated transfer of habituation, measured in a preparation lacking the siphon-gill peripheral nervous system (PNS), was associated with a reduced excitatory response in central motor neurons. Repeated tactile stimulation of the gill did not attenuate the gill response evoked by electrical stimulation of the branchial nerve nor the mechanoreceptor response recorded in LE sensory neurons. In contrast, repeated stimulation of siphon or gill at a site which was "off" the sensory field of a specific mechanoreceptor led to a diminution in synaptic transmission between that sensory neuron and its followers (motor neurons and inter-neurons). These data demonstrate that centrally mediated transfer of habituation results from heterosynaptic modulation of synaptic transmission at the sensory-motor (and sensory-interneuron) synapses. Therefore, habituation behavior in Aplysia is mediated through the conjoint action of homosynaptic and heterosynaptic inhibitory processes.  相似文献

By means of intracellular recording of the mollusc neuronal activity a study was made of the influence of ACTH4-7--a fragment of the stress hormone,--on elaboration of habituation to tactile stimuli. ACTH was administered immediately after the elaboration of the series I of habituation (25 to 30 stimuli) by means of either perfusion or extra- or intracellular microionophoresis. This was followed by the II-V habituation series (with 15 min intervals between them). Perfusion and extracellular (not intracellular) ACTH4-7 administration produced an acceleration of habituation in the series II, increase of action potentials (AP) thresholds in the response to the first tactile stimulus of series II and cessation of further increase of the AP thresholds in the course of elaboration. Without ACTH, these phenomena were observed beginning with habituation series IV. The ACTH action while influencing the memory is apparently directed to the external side of the excitable neuronal membrane; ACTH seems to accelerate the consolidation process. Any of the methods of ACTH administration produced also an enhancement of EPSPs and an increase in the number of APs in the responses to stimuli, without lowering the thresholds of APs generation. This testifies toi enhanced chemosensitivity of the membrane and may underlie the influence of ACTH on the level of wakefulness.  相似文献
