Summary A multilayered structure, previously recorded only in bryophytes, is reported in spermatids of three species of Equisetum. It is interpreted as comprising four layers, recalling the Vierergruppe of Marchantia spermatids. Unlike the multilayered structure of bryophyte spermatids, a rather compact organelle, that of Equisetum forms a thin strip extending almost the whole diameter of the cell. As in bryophytes the upper layer of the Equisetum multilayered structure is composed of parallel microtubules, extending far beyond the underlying layers. The microtubular band is considered equivalent to the similar structure seen in a variety of plant spermatozoids, but in Equisetum it is much longer and composed of many more microtubules than reported from any other plant spermatozoid. The morphology of the multilayered structure is related to the large size and short, broad form of Equisetum spermatozoids.  相似文献

Streptococcus suis infection induces formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in vitro; however, the contribution of NETs‐mediated killing to the pathogenesis of S. suis in vivo is yet to be elicited. The findings of the present study indicated that extracellular DNA fiber can be induced in a murine model in response to S. suis infection. A nuclease that destroys their structure was used to evaluate the role of NETs on S. suis infection. Treatment with nuclease resulted in a greater bacteria load and higher serum TNF‐α concentrations in response to S. suis infection, indicating that NETs structure played an essential role in S. suis clearance and inflammation. Furthermore, nuclease treatment resulted in more severe clinical signs during and higher mortality from S. suis infection. These findings indicated that NETs structure contributes to protection against S. suis infection.  相似文献

The molecular weights ofwaxy proteins, by SDS-PAGE, and the N-terminal amino acid sequences of mature protein and of V8 protease-induced fragments were determined in diploid cereals. The homology of the primary structure was relatively high among cereals examined here, and there appeared to be a common sequence, V-F-V-G-A-E-M-A, in the vicinity of the N terminus. Based on the amino acid sequences, these cereals could be divided into two groups, including corn and rice in one and diploid wheat, fourAegilops species, rye, and barley in the other. In diploid wheat andAegilops species there were substitutions of amino acids in the primary structure. Variations of this sort suggest that the primary structure ofwaxy proteins would provide clues to the phylogenetic relations in the wheat group.  相似文献

Gene flow between genetically differentiated populations can maintain variation in species interactions, especially when population structure is congruent between interacting species. However, large‐scale empirical comparisons of the population structure of interacting species are rare, particularly in positive interspecific interactions (mutualisms). One agriculturally and ecologically important mutualism is the partnership between legume plants and rhizobia. Through characterizing and comparing the population genomic structure of the legume Medicago lupulina and two rhizobial species (Ensifer medicae and E. meliloti), we explored the spatial scale of population differentiation between interacting partners in their introduced range in North America. We found high proportions of E. meliloti in southeastern populations and high proportions of E. medicae in northwestern populations. Medicago lupulina and the Ensifer genus showed similar patterns of spatial genetic structure (isolation by distance). However, we detected no evidence of isolation by distance or population structure within either species of bacteria. Genome‐wide nucleotide diversity within each of the two Ensifer species was low, suggesting limited introduction of strains, founder events, or severe bottlenecks. Our results suggest that there is potential for geographically structured coevolution between M. lupulina and the Ensifer genus, but not between M. lupulina and either Ensifer species.  相似文献

Alders (Alnus spp.) are important components of northern ecosystems due to their ability to fix nitrogen (N) in symbiosis with Frankia bacteria. Availability of optimal Frankia may be a contributing factor in limiting the performance and ecological effects of Alnus, but the factors underlying distribution of Alnus-infective Frankia are not well understood. This study examined the genetic structure (nifD–K spacer RFLP haplotypes) of Frankia assemblages symbiotic with two species of Alnus (A. tenuifolia and A. viridis) in four successional habitats in interior Alaska. We used one habitat in which both hosts occurred to observe differences between host species independent of habitat, and we used replicate sites for each habitat and host to assess the consistency of symbiont structure related to both factors. We also measured leaf N content and specific N-fixation rate (SNF) of nodules (15N uptake) to determine whether either covaried with Frankia structure, and whether Frankia genotypes differed in SNF in situ. Frankia structure differed between sympatric hosts and among habitats, particularly for A. tenuifolia, and was largely consistent among replicate sites representing both factors. Leaf N differed between host species and among habitats for both hosts. SNF did not differ among habitats or host species, and little evidence for differences in SNF among Frankia genotypes was found, due largely to high variation in SNF. Consistency of Frankia structure among replicate sites suggests a consistent relationship between both host species and habitat among these sites. Sea‐strait geological history and seawater dispersal patterns can affect the genetic structure of coastal plants. We investigated microsatellite (simple sequence repeat, SSR) variations in chloroplast (cp) and nuclear (n) DNA of the coastal shrub R osa rugosa, native to northeastern Asia, and three species closely related to it. In northern Japan, we sampled R. rugosa along coasts around the Soya and Tsugaru straits with different histories of the Quaternary land formation as a result of different water depths. Both cpSSR and nSSR variations suggest rare hybridization between R . rugosa and the closely related species. Variations in one of two cpSSRs showed genetic differentiation between eastern and western Hokkaido. This genetic structure may result from introgression from R. davurica in eastern Hokkaido and/or isolation between the eastern and western coastlines of Hokkaido as a result of the Quaternary land formation in the Soya Strait. On the other hand, variations in 10 nSSRs were geographically homogeneous with weak isolation by distance along coastlines. These results suggest that extensive gene flow has been homogenizing the genetic structure of R . rugosa in northern Japan.  相似文献

A protein superfamily with a “Domain of Unknown Function,”, DUF3349 (PF11829), is present predominately in Mycobacterium and Rhodococcus bacterial species suggesting that these proteins may have a biological function unique to these bacteria. We previously reported the inaugural structure of a DUF3349 superfamily member, Mycobacterium tuberculosis Rv0543c. Here, we report the structures determined for three additional DUF3349 proteins: Mycobacterium smegmatis MSMEG_1063 and MSMEG_1066 and Mycobacterium abscessus MAB_3403c. Like Rv0543c, the NMR solution structure of MSMEG_1063 revealed a monomeric five α‐helix bundle with a similar overall topology. Conversely, the crystal structure of MSMEG_1066 revealed a five α‐helix protein with a strikingly different topology and a tetrameric quaternary structure that was confirmed by size exclusion chromatography. The NMR solution structure of a fourth member of the DUF3349 superfamily, MAB_3403c, with 18 residues missing at the N‐terminus, revealed a monomeric α‐helical protein with a folding topology similar to the three C‐terminal helices in the protomer of the MSMEG_1066 tetramer. These structures, together with a GREMLIN‐based bioinformatics analysis of the DUF3349 primary amino acid sequences, suggest two subfamilies within the DUF3349 family. The division of the DUF3349 into two distinct subfamilies would have been lost if structure solution had stopped with the first structure in the DUF3349 family, highlighting the insights generated by solving multiple structures within a protein superfamily. Future studies will determine if the structural diversity at the tertiary and quaternary levels in the DUF3349 protein superfamily have functional roles in Mycobacteria and Rhodococcus species with potential implications for structure‐based drug discovery.  相似文献

Social structure can have a significant impact on divergence and evolution within species, especially in the marine environment, which has few environmental boundaries to dispersal. On the other hand, genetic structure can affect social structure in many species, through an individual preference towards associating with relatives. One social species, the short‐finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), has been shown to live in stable social groups for periods of at least a decade. Using mitochondrial control sequences from 242 individuals and single nucleotide polymorphisms from 106 individuals, we examine population structure among geographic and social groups of short‐finned pilot whales in the Hawaiian Islands, and test for links between social and genetic structure. Our results show that there are at least two geographic populations in the Hawaiian Islands: a Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) population and a Northwestern Hawaiian Islands/Pelagic population (FST and ΦST < .001), as well as an eastern MHI community and a western MHI community (FST = .009). We find genetically driven social structure, or high relatedness among social units and clusters (< .001), and a positive relationship between relatedness and association between individuals (< .0001). Further, socially organized clusters are genetically distinct, indicating that social structure drives genetic divergence within the population, likely through restricted mate selection (FST = .05). This genetic divergence among social groups can make the species less resilient to anthropogenic or ecological disturbance. Conservation of this species therefore depends on understanding links among social structure, genetic structure and ecological variability within the species.  相似文献

Patterns of gonad structure in hermaphroditic gobies (Teleostei Gobiidae)   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Synopsis Hermaphroditism has been reported for a small number of gobiid fishes, but the extent of this sexual pattern within the family is not known. Gonad structure was examined in one or more species from twenty-one gobiid genera. No evidence of hermaphroditism was found in the species selected from 14 genera. Laboratory studies supported the conclusion of gonochorism for the examined species in four of them:Asterropteryx, Bathygobius, Gnatholepis, andPsilogobius. Currently, the absence of precursive testicular tissues associated with the ovary in females, in conjunction with no retained ovarian features in the testes of males, appear to be reliable indicators of a gonochoristic sexual pattern in gobiid fishes. Evidence for hermaphroditism was observed in seven genera:Eviota, Trimma, Fusigobius, Lophogobius, Priolepis, Gobiodon, andParagobiodon. Protogyny was experimentally confirmed inE. epiphanes, and the gonad structure in another nine of ten species ofEviota suggested either protogyny or protogynous tendencies. With the exception ofGobiodon andParagobiodon, which exhibited similar gonadal structure, ovarian and testicular structure varied considerably among the hermaphroditic genera examined, both with regard to the configuration and to the degree of development of ovarian and testicular tissues, or testicular tissue precursors. Findings of this study indicate that hermaphroditic gonad structure will prove to be a useful trait in determining evolutionary relationships within the Gobiidae.  相似文献

对杜鹃属(Rhododendron L.)植物起源、中国分布、适应性、灌丛群落结构特征和演替特征等问题进行了综述,并对杜鹃属植物的深入研究和合理利用进行展望。中国西南地区以及喜马拉雅至缅甸北部地区为杜鹃属植物的起源中心,贵州百里杜鹃林是全球最大野生杜鹃资源库。杜鹃属植物的适应性与所在区系的同质性、海拔相似度、进化程度、关键功能性状等密切相关,基于进化-形态功能特征的比较为选育适应性优良的杜鹃品种提供了参考。杜鹃灌丛群落具有特殊性,表现出复杂的多层次垂直结构、镶嵌式水平结构和明显的年龄结构特征。依据群落具备优势种生态位宽度大且种群间的生态位相似性比例较小来判定杜鹃灌丛群落已演替至顶级的观点仍有待考证。  相似文献

林分空间结构的改变直接影响林下草本物种的多样性。以针叶纯林、针阔混交林和常绿阔叶林为研究对象,采用结构方程模型研究了林分空间结构对林下草本物种多样性的影响,并探讨了林分水平空间结构,垂直空间结构以及林木竞争态势对林下草本物种多样性的影响的相对重要性。结果表明,林分水平空间结构对林下草本的物种多样性指数和物种均匀性指数均存在极显著的影响(P < 0.001),影响系数高达0.96和0.89,对林下草本物种丰富度存在显著影响(P < 0.01),影响系数为0.22;林分垂直空间结对林下草本丰富度和物种均匀性指数均存在极显著的影响(P < 0.001),影响系数分别为0.86和0.43,对林下草本物种多样性指数存在显著影响(P < 0.01),影响系数为0.16;林木竞争指数与林下草本丰富度和物种多样性指数也均存在极显著的影响(P < 0.001),但影响系数较小,分别为-0.47和-0.30,而对林下草本物种均匀性指数未达到显著影响作用(P > 0.05),影响系数仅为-0.04。整体上看,林分水平空间结构、垂直空间结构和林木竞争态势均对林下草本物种多样性有较强的影响作用,但从影响系数看,林分水平空间结构的影响作用最大,垂直空间结构次之,林木竞争态势的影响作用最小。因此,欲维持或改善林下草本物种多样性,应采取调整林分水平空间结构为主,垂直空间结构调整为辅,并适当降低林木竞争程度的综合经营措施。  相似文献

Orchid seeds are minute, dust-like, wind-borne and, thus, would seem to have the potential for long-distance dispersal. Based on this perception, one may predict near-random spatial genetic structure within orchid populations. In reality we do not know much about seed dispersal in orchids and the few empirical studies of fine-scale genetic structure have revealed significant genetic structure at short distances (< 5m), suggesting that most seeds of orchids fall close to the maternal plant. To obtain more empirical data on dispersal, Ripley’s L(d)-statistics, spatial autocorrelation analyses (coancestry, fij analyses) and Wright’s F statistics were used to examine the distribution of individuals and the genetic structure within two populations of the terrestrial orchid Orchis cyclochila in southern Korea. High levels of genetic diversity (He = 0.210) and low between-population variation were found (FST = 0.030). Ripley’s L(d)-statistics indicated significant aggregation of individuals, and patterns varied depending on populations. Spatial autocorrelation analysis revealed significant positive genetic correlations among individuals located <1 m, with mean fij values expected for half sibs. This genetic structure suggests that many seeds fall in the immediate vicinity of the maternal plant. The finding of significant fine-scale genetic structure, however, does not have to preclude the potential for the long distance dispersal of seeds. Both the existence of fine-scale genetic structure and low FST are consistent with a leptokurtic distribution of seed dispersal distances with a very flat tail.  相似文献

The structure of temperate deciduous forests dominated byFraxinus spaethiana andPterocarya rhoifolia in V-shaped valleys in the Chichibu Mountains, central Japan was studied to clarify their dynamics, with special reference to disturbance. Forest structure and annual ring analysis revealed that the forests have been subjected to mass movement (mud flow) in the past. The size and age structure, and diameter growth curves, indicated thatF. spaethiana is relatively shade tolerant, long living and slow-growing, whileP. rhoifolia is less shade tolerant, short living, but fast growing.Pterocarya rhoifolia appears to depend on large-scale but rare disturbances.Fraxinus spaethiana establishes its seedlings on relatively unstable substrate in V-shaped valleys, but once established, they survive a long time with high shade tolerance. The dominance and coexistence of the two species may primarily depend on the intensity and frequency of geomorphological processes.  相似文献

Resonance Raman experiments were performed on different green bacteria. With blue excitation, i.e. under Soret resonance or preresonance conditions, resonance Raman contributions were essentially arising from the chlorosome pigments. By comparing these spectra and those of isolated chlorosomes, it is possible to evaluate how the latter retain their native structure during the isolation procedures. The structure of bacteriochlorophyll oligomers in chlorosomes was interspecifically compared, in bacteriochlorophyllc- and bacteriochlorophylle- synthesising bacteria. It appears that interactions assumed by the 9-keto carbonyl group are identical inChlorobium limicola, Chlorobium tepidum, andChlorobium phaeobacteroides. In the latter strain, the 3-formyl carbonyl group of bacteriochlorophylle is kept free from intermolecular interactions. By contrast, resonance Raman spectra unambiguously indicate that the structure of bacteriochlorophyll oligomers is slightly different in chlorosomes fromChloroflexus auranticus, either isolated or in the whole bacteria.  相似文献

NMR measurements can give important information on solution structure, without the necessity for a full-scale solution structure determination. The C-terminal protein binding domain of the ribosome-associated chaperone protein trigger factor is composed of non-contiguous parts of the polypeptide chain, with an interpolated prolyl isomerase domain. A construct of the C-terminal domain of Escherichia coli trigger factor containing residues 113–149 and 247–432, joined by a Gly-Ser-Gly-Ser linker, is well folded and gives excellent NMR spectra in solution. We have used NMR measurements on this construct, and on a longer construct that includes the prolyl isomerase domain, to distinguish between two possible structures for the C-terminal domain of trigger factor, and to assess the behavior of the trigger factor C-terminal domain in solution. Two X-ray crystal structures, of intact trigger factor from E. coli (Ferbitz et al., Nature 431:590–596, 2004), and of a truncated trigger factor from Vibrio cholerae (Ludlam et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 101:13436–13441, 2004) showed significant differences in the structure of the C-terminal domain, such that the two structures could not be superimposed. We show using NMR chemical shifts and long range nuclear Overhauser effects that the secondary and tertiary structure of the E. coli C-terminal domain in solution is consistent with the crystal structure of the E. coli trigger factor and not with the V. cholerae protein. Given the similarity of the amino acid sequences of the E. coli and V. cholerae proteins, it appears likely that the structure of the V. cholerae protein has been distorted as a result of truncation of a 44-amino acid segment at the C-terminus. Analysis of residual dipolar coupling measurements shows that the overall topology of the solution structure is completely inconsistent with both structures. Dynamics analysis of the C-terminal domain using T1, T2 and heteronuclear NOE parameters show that the protein is overall rather flexible. These results indicate that the structure of this domain in solution resembles the X-ray crystal structure of the E. coli protein in secondary structure and at least some tertiary contacts, but that the overall topology differs in solution, probably due to structural fluctuation.  相似文献

于2007—2010年春季(5月)利用大型浮游生物网对莱州湾海域位置相同的12个站位进行4个航次拖网调查,研究分析了该海域鱼卵仔稚鱼群落组成、优势种、空间分布及其多样性特征。结果表明:4个航次共获得鱼卵、仔稚鱼26种,隶属于6目16科24属,1种衔科鱼卵鉴定到科,另有1种鱼卵未能鉴定种类。鱼卵、仔稚鱼分布不均匀,莱州湾西部还湾底海域分布较多。斑鰶(Konosiruspunctatus)为该海域鱼卵的第一优势种;鳀(Engraulisjaponicus)在2007年和2008年作为仔稚鱼的第一优势种出现,而2009年和2010年仔稚鱼的第一优势种则是虾虎鱼。调查期间该海域鱼卵、仔稚鱼的均匀度指数和生物多样性指数变化趋势一致,均表现为从2007年开始随年代递减的趋势;种类数和丰富度指数则从2008年开始呈现随年代递减的趋势。2007—2010年4a鱼卵仔稚鱼聚类结果显示,2007年和2008年鱼卵仔稚鱼群落结构相似,与2009年和2010年均有差异。与1982年山东省近岸调查结果相比,莱州湾海域鱼卵仔稚鱼群落结构发生明显变化,斑鰶取代鳀成为第一优势种,小黄鱼等经济鱼类数量逐渐降低。  相似文献

Coral reefs are often subject to disturbances that can cause enduring changes in community structure and abundance of coral reef organisms. In Moorea, French Polynesia, frequent disturbances between 1979 and 2003 caused marked shifts in taxonomic composition of coral assemblages. This study explores recent changes in live cover and taxonomic structure of coral communities on the north coast of Moorea, French Polynesia, to assess whether coral assemblages are recovering (returning to a previous Acropora-dominated state) or continuing to move towards an alternative community structure. Coral cover declined by 29.7% between July 2003 and March 2009, mostly due to loss of Acropora and Montipora spp. Coral mortality varied among habitats, with highest levels of coral loss on the outer reef slope (7–20 m depth). In contrast, there was limited change in coral cover within the lagoon, and coral cover actually increased on the reef crest. Observed changes in coral cover and composition correspond closely with the known feeding preferences and observed spatial patterns of Acanthaster planci L., though observed coral loss also coincided with at least one episode of coral bleaching, as well as persistent populations of the corallivorous starfish Culcita novaeguineae Muller & Troschel. While climate change poses an important and significant threat to the future structure and dynamics coral reef communities, outbreaks of A. planci remain a significant cause of coral loss in Moorea. More importantly, these recent disturbances have followed long-term shifts in the structure of coral assemblages, and the relative abundance of both Pocillopora and Porites continue to increase due to disproportionate losses of Acropora and Montipora. Moreover, Pocillopora and Porites dominate assemblages of juvenile corals, suggesting that there is limited potential for a return to an Acropora-dominated state, last recorded in 1979.  相似文献

The size structure of coral populations is influenced by biotic and physical factors, as well as species-specific demographic rates (recruitment, colony growth, mortality). Coral reefs surrounding Moorea Island are characterized by strong environmental gradients at small spatial scales, and therefore, we expected that the size structure of coral populations would vary greatly at this scale. This study aimed at determining the degree of spatial heterogeneity in the population size structure of two coral taxa, Pocillopora meandrina and massive Porites spp., among depths (6, 12, and 18 m) and among locations (Vaipahu, Tiahura and Haapiti) representing different exposure to hydrodynamic forces. Our results clearly underlined the strong heterogeneity in the size structure of both P. meandrina and massive Porites spp., with marked variation among depths and among locations. However, the lack of any consistent and regular trends in the size structure along depths or among locations, and the lack of correlation between size structure and mean recruitment rates may suggest that other factors (e.g., stochastic life history processes, biotic interactions, and disturbances) further modify the structure of coral populations. We found that the size structure of P. meandrina was fundamentally different to that of massive Porites spp., reflecting the importance of life history characteristics in population dynamics. A bisexual species of the genus Artemia (Crustacea, Phyllopoda), Artemia franciscana Barigozzi of San Francisco Bay and a parthenogenetic population of Artemia sp. of Tsing-Tao (China), both with 42 chromosomes, were compared with respect to the microscopic structure of the interphase larval nucleus, the microscopical structure of the prophase chromosomes and the DNA structure. — Artemia franciscana exhibits several chromocenters in the resting nucleus, heterochromatic blocks located at the end of the prophase chromosomes, and a large amount of repetitive DNA (Alu I 110-bp fragments). The other Artemia sp. lacks chromocenters, heterochromatic blocks in the chromosomes, and the Alu I DNA. Abstract. The annual cycle of canopy structure in two mediterranean shrubs in a pioneer zone of the mobile dune system in the Donana National Park, Scrophularia frutescens and Halimium halimifolium, has been analyzed. Destructive methods were used as well as a new non-destructive method, based on frequency analysis of organ distribution within the plant canopy. S. frutescens shows strong seasonal changes of photo-synthetic biomass, but little annual increment in dry weight. In H. halimifolium, seasonal changes are not as strongly differentiated as in S. frutescens, but a higher annual increment is shown. The canopy structure of both species and its temporal changes are compared with existingplant strategy models.  相似文献
