In eutherian mammals, the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) comprise the prostate, bulbourethral glands, ampullary glands, and the seminal vesicles. Their composition, anatomy and function vary widely between species. This study aimed to characterize histologically and compare the RAGs of bats. The RAGs of Noctilio albiventris (Noctilionidae) and Rhynchonycteris naso (Emballonuridae) were studied using anatomical and histological methods, and were reconstructed three dimensionally. The RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso are composed of a compact glandular complex that surrounds the urethra and a pair of bulbourethral glands, which are extra‐abdominally located in the inguinal region. In both species, the glandular complex is composed of two well‐defined prostatic regions (ventral and dorsal). The ventral region showed an atypical epithelium (holocrine), where no obvious cellular limits were observed, and PAS‐positive secretion. The dorsal region had a pseudostratified cuboidal epithelium, with basal and secretory cells, and PAS‐negative secretion. Noctilio albiventris also had urethral glands (Littre glands) surrounding the urethra, however, R. naso had only muscles. Both species had bulbourethral glands, with simple columnar epithelium and PAS‐positive secretion. In conclusion, the RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso comprised a pair of bulbourethral glands and an intra‐abdominal complex, composed of a prostate with two different regions (ventral and dorsal), while the ampullary glands and seminal vesicles were missing in both species. This morphology was more closely related between N. albiventris and R. naso, and to species of the family Phyllostomidae than to families Molossidae and Vespertilionidae. J. This study aimed to morphologically characterize and compare the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) of bats belonging to the five Brazilian subfamilies of the family Phyllostomidae (Carollia perspicillata—Carollinae; Desmodus rotundus—Desmodontinae; Glossophaga soricina—Glossophaginae; Phyllostomus discolor—Phyllostominae and Platyrrhinus lineatus—Stenodermatinae). The study demonstrated that the RAGs of phyllostomid bats were comprised of a pair of extra‐abdominal bulbourethral glands and an intra‐abdominal complex, composed of paraurethral glands and a prostate with two (Desmodontinae and Stenodermatinae) or three (Carollinae, Glossophaginae and Phyllostominae) different regions, with the absence of the seminal vesicles; this pattern possibly evolved from a process of compaction of the prostatic regions from an ancestor with three regions. The reproductive accessory glands (RAG) are essential components in reproduction because their secretion products ensure survival, viability, and sperm motility. The objective of this study was to characterize and compare the morphological and histological structure of the RAG in three species of bats of the genus Sturnira (S. erythromos, S. lilium, and S. oporaphilum). The RAG complex comprise a compact gland (prostate), which surrounds the urethra, and a pair of Glands of Cowper at the base of penis. Anatomical and histologically, the prostate are differentiated in two regions, ventral and dorsal. The dorsal region has tubuloalveolar glands with secretions fine granular or accumulations of a gel‐like substance with bubbles and the ventral region, has alveolar glands with secretory cells form a single‐layer of small cells. The seminal vesicles are absent. The prostatic morphology of the three species is similar to that of other studied Stenodermatinae and Desmodontinae, but differs from other subfamilies of Phyllostomidae (Carollinae, Glossophaginae, and Phyllostominae) as that of Molossidae and Vespertilionidae. The RAG complex has no annual variation in relation to functionality or size, but it is variable depending on age (subadults and adults). This agrees with the annual reproductive pattern described for these species in these latitudes, where adult males are reproductively active throughout the year.  相似文献

Recent immunohistochemical studies have shown that basal cells in human prostatic epithelium are not myoepithelial cells. Since in the literature the Dunning tumor, originally described as a rat prostate carcinoma derived from the dorsolateral prostate of a Copenhagen rat, was reported to have myoepithelial cells, a comparative immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study was performed in the H-, HIF- and AT3-lines of the Dunning tumor, the male accessory sex glands (ventral, dorsal, lateral prostate, coagulating gland, bulbourethral gland) and the mammary gland of both Copenhagen and Wistar rats. Mono- and polyclonal antibodies directed against intermediate filament proteins (cytokeratin, desmin, vimentin) and the contractile proteins (alpha-actin, muscle type specific myosin, tropomyosin) were used along with phalloidin decoration of F-actin. As in the human prostate, none of the rat prostate lobes in either strains did contain basal cells expressing cytokeratin along with alpha-actin, myosin and tropomyosin Cells representing fully differentiated myoepithelial cells, however, were present as anticipated in the mammary gland, the bulbourethral gland and the H-tumor line of the Dunning tumor. This finding is difficult to reconcile with the contention of a prostatic origin of the H-Dunning tumor. Further studies are required to classify the epithelial parental tissue in order to define the true origin of the H-Dunning tumor and the tumor lines derived thereof.  相似文献

A possible role for gonadotrophins luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the prostate physiology has been suggested in humans and rats. This study aimed at investigating the presence of receptors for LH and FSH (LHR and FSHR) in the canine prostate. Prostates were collected at post mortem from 6 clinically healthy, sexually intact beagles free from any prostatic disorder. Tissue was sampled from dorsal, middle and ventral regions of each prostate. Immunohistochemical localization was performed on wax-embedded sections using polyclonal antibodies for LHR or FSHR. The pattern and intensity of staining in the parenchyma (glandular epithelium) and stroma were determined using a semiquantitative histologic assessment. Receptors for LH and FSH were consistently present in both the glandular epithelium and the stroma in all tissue samples examined. Expression for both receptors was higher in the glandular epithelium than the stroma of all prostatic regions (P < 0.001). In the glandular epithelium, LHR (P < 0.01) and FSHR (P < 0.05) expression was lower in the lateral than the other regions, and there was no difference between dorsal and ventral regions. However, variations in the expression for LHR and FSHR among prostatic regions were not found in the stroma. These findings have demonstrated that LHR and FSHR are expressed in the dog prostate, and the variation observed in their levels of expression among its regions and tissue layers suggests a potential role of gonadotrophins LH and FSH in the regulation of the prostate physiology, particularly the glandular epithelium.  相似文献

The cloacal glands of the male marbled newt Triturus marmoratus marmoratus were studied during winter and summer by histochemical and quantitative histologic methods. Four types of glands were distinguished: pelvic, dorsal, ventral, and Kingsbury's glands. The pelvic and dorsal glands have an eosinophilic epithelium and secrete neutral mucins. The ventral and Kingsbury's glands have a basophilic epithelium and secrete acid mucins. The lectin-histochemical characterization of the carbohydrates secreted by the four gland types revealed that the secretion of both the pelvic and Kingsbury's glands contain β-GalNAc in the peripheral region of the oligosaccharide, and that the dorsal glands secrete a glycoprotein with α-GalNAc. The ventral gland sections did not react to any of the lectins used here. The quantitative study revealed that the cloaca undergoes seasonal variations in volume, being significantly larger in winter than in summer. The total volume occupied by both the pelvic and ventral glands, as well as their tubular diameter, are also significantly greater in winter, while these parameters do not vary in dorsal and Kingsbury's glands. Commensal pea crabs inhabiting bivalves have a high reproductive output due to the extension andfecundity of the ovary. We studied the underlying morphology of the female reproductive system in the Pinnotheridae Pinnotheres pisum, Pinnotheres pectunculi and Nepinnotheres pinnotheres using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Eubrachyura have internal fertilization: the paired vaginas enlarge into storage structures, the spermathecae, which are connected to the ovaries by oviducts. Sperm is stored inside the spermathecae until the oocytes are mature. The oocytes are transported by oviducts into the spermathecae where fertilization takes place. In the investigated pinnotherids, the vagina is of the “concave pattern” (sensu Hartnoll 1968 ): musculature is attached alongside flexible parts of the vagina wall that controls the dimension of its lumen. The genital opening is closed by a muscular mobile operculum. The spermatheca can be divided into two distinct regions by function and morphology. The ventral part includes the connection with vagina and oviduct and is regarded as the zone where fertilization takes place. It is lined with cuticle except where the oviduct enters the spermatheca by the “holocrine transfer tissue.” At ovulation, the oocytes have to pass through this multilayered glandular epithelium performing holocrine secretion. The dorsal part of the spermatheca is considered as the main sperm storage area. It is lined by a highly secretory apocrine glandular epithelium. Thus, two different forms of secretion occur in the spermathecae of pinnotherids. The definite role of secretion in sperm storage and fertilization is not yet resolved, but it is notable that structure and function of spermathecal secretion are more complex in pinnotherids, and probably more efficient, than in other brachyuran crabs. The eyelids of the newt were studied in 10 microns serial paraffin and 1-2 microns plastic sections using standard histological stains and special stains for glycoconjugates. The eyelids contain four different glands. Simple acinar serous and simple acinar mucous glands occur in the skin; unicellular mucous glands occur in the conjunctiva; and convoluted tubular seromucous glands are present in connective tissue beneath the conjunctiva. The first two are identical to cutaneous glands found elsewhere on the head and body. The simple acinar serous glands are surrounded by myoepithelial cells and release their secretion, which is composed largely of proteins with minimal glycoconjugate content, by a holocrine mechanism. The secretory product of the simple acinar mucous glands is composed of neutral glycoconjugates with a minor content of acidic glycoconjugates; the mucin exhibits strong PAS and PAPD staining and weak staining by AB and PAPS methods. The unicellular conjunctival mucous glands secrete both neutral and acidic glycoconjugates as shown by positive reactions with PAS, PAPD, PAPS, and AB methods. Convoluted tubular seromucous glands in the ventral eyelid synthesize both proteins and neutral glycoconjugates. The mucous secretions of the conjunctival glands probably provide lubrication and protection for the cornea.  相似文献

扬子鳄有三种皮肤腺:背腺、泄殖腔麝腺和下颌腺。背腺位于背中线左右两侧第二行鳞片下方,其确切位置个体间差异很大,如表1。幼鳄背腺形态多种多样,但显示出是一种退化器官,未观察到腺开口,也未观察到半成鳄和成鳄的背腺,因此扬子鳄背腺可能不具功能。泄殖腔麝腺位于泄殖腔腹唇内,梨形,腺管开口于泄殖腔腹壁,成体腺腔很大,腺的底部壁较厚,腺细胞明显地分成若干小叶,其它部位壁较薄,小叶不明显,属全泌腺,分泌油脂物,繁殖期特别发达,但性未成熟个体亦具功能,是一种信息素下颌腺位于下颌后方两侧皮肤内,圆柱状,脉管开口于下颌腹侧皮肤表面,成体腺腔不规则,腺壁厚,从包囊到腺腔,腺细胞可明显地分成三个区,属全泌腺,分泌油脂物,在繁殖期特别发达,此腺到性成熟才具功能。  相似文献

We studied the morphological characteristics and seasonal changes of the bulbourethral gland of Eidolon helvum in a typical African tropical environment. Forty-eight bulbourethral glands were examined using gross anatomical, histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural techniques during the early rainy, late rainy, and peak dry seasons. The pear-shaped bilateral bulbourethral glands were located extra-abdominally in the inguinal region. Trabeculae from the capsule divided the parenchyma into numerous lobules of tubuloalveolar glandular acini. The mucosa was covered by a simple columnar epithelium consisting up of principal secretory cells, columnar dense cells and basal cells, which were progressively pronounced during the dry season. The principal cells contained eosinophilic granules, which were PAS positive while the dense cells did not show affinity for the stains. The mean gross weights, acini diameters, and epithelial heights were greater during the rainy season than the dry season. Ultrastructural evaluation showed that the cytoplasm of the principal cells contained well-developed Golgi complexes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and secretory vesicles of varying electron densities and sizes. The secretory vesicles were numerous during the early rainy season, decreased during the late rainy season and were scanty during the peak dry season. The simple columnar epithelium observed during the rainy season was replaced by an undefined stratified epithelium during the dry season, and this was associated with cellular degenerations and regenerations. In conclusion, E. helvum has a typical mammalian bulbourethral gland, with a unique cell type, the dense cell whose functions are not well-understood. The gland exhibits cyclical seasonal variation in structure and secretory activity; being active during the early rainy season (breeding season), and showing the lowest activity during the dry season (non-breeding season). Glandular epithelial cell renewal occurs during the dry season in preparation for the next breeding season.  相似文献

In this study, for the first time, the morphology of the dorsal and ventral skin of Triturus karelinii using light microscopy through histochemical methods was described. The skin exhibited basic morphological characteristics of the other urodeles: the epidermis composed of keratinized stratified epithelium with numerous conical protrusions and the dermis subdivided into spongy and compact layers. In the spongious dermis, three distinct types of glands were observed, namely serous, mucous and mixed glands. These glands were alveolar and occurred in both males and females. The morphologies of all three skin glands differed from anurans and other urodeles, having peculiar characteristics. Serous glands exhibited three different appearances. An unusual finding in mucous glands was the different appearance of their granules, showing diverse density after staining with PAS and AB. The histochemical analysis clearly demonstrated the presence of neutral, acid and sulfated mucins in the adenocytes of mucous glands. Mixed glands formed by mucous and serous glands exhibited the same morphological traits of both types of glands. Light microscopic observations revealed that the dorsal and ventral skin showed structural similarities with some minor differences, possibly resulting from their functions.  相似文献

Mesenchyme (UGM) and epithelium (UGE) isolated from the urogenital sinuses (UGS) of 17-day male and female rat embryos were separated by using a trypsinization procedure, grown on soft agar, transplanted into syngeneic pubertal male hosts as subcapsular renal grafts, and then collected after 29-30 days. Neither UGM nor UGE underwent prostatic morphogenesis when grown under these conditions. However, tissue recombinants composed of UGM + UGE grew and produced prostatic glands with acinar secretory material. Further, UGM + UGE recombinants were made by varying the proportions of mesenchymal and epithelial tissues. The size of the implants was a function of the absolute amount of mesenchyme; increasing the absolute amount of UGM produced larger specimens whereas varying the UGE had no effect. The UGM was also found to be essential for supporting the growth of small glandular elements derived from the ventral prostate of pubescent rats. Segments isolated from the terminal vesicles (TIPs) and from prostatic tissue adjacent to the urethra (PDCT) regressed when implanted alone under the kidney capsule. However, combination of the prostatic segments with UGM produced prostatic glands with relative wet weight and DNA content responses of the following order: UGM + TIP greater than UGM + PDCT = UGM + UGE. Two-dimensional gel electrophoretic protein patterns from UGM + PDCT and UGM + TIP specimens had differential expression of three protein regions unique to the ventral prostate Quantitative and qualitative responses of the TIP and PDCT segments to UGM inductive influences indicate that differences exist between the epithelia of the TIP and PDCT regions of the ventral lobes of the rat prostate.  相似文献

Female teleosts do not develop Müllerian ducts; consequently, the ovary of teleosts contains two zones: germinal and gonoduct. The gonoduct lacks germinal cells, but has relevant functions in the reproductive process. We describe the functional morphology of the gonoduct in the viviparous teleost Poeciliopsis gracilis during nongestation and gestation stages. This study tests the hypothesis that the gonoduct functions as a barrier between the germinal zone and the exterior. By providing information about morphology and function of the gonoduct we show that this part of the ovary has an essential role in the reproduction of teleosts. The ovaries were processed by histological technique and stained with hematoxylin‐eosin (H‐E), Masson's trichrome, toluidine blue and periodic acid‐Schiff (PAS). The gonoduct is divided into three regions: cephalic, middle, and caudal. In the cephalic and middle regions there are mucosal folds that extend into the gonoductal lumen, forming structures similar to a cervix. The caudal region has two portions: the anterior contains a dorsal invagination and exocrine glands among columnar cells; the posterior has a ventral flexion and stratified epithelium with apical secretory cells. The morphology of this epithelium indicates two functions: (a) secretory by the apical columnar cells, and (b) protection through the stratification. Another peculiarity of the caudal region is that both ducts, reproductive and digestive, converge in a common cavity at their caudal ends, forming a cloacal region. The histology of the gonoduct indicates relevant functions including: (1) the control of the luminal diameter by the muscle and the presence of mucosal folds, like a cervix; (2) the relationship with the spermatozoa during insemination and storing them in mucosal folds; (3) the support of immunological processes; (4) secretory activities; (5) forming the duct during birth; and (6) possibly, acts as a barrier against parasite infestations.  相似文献

Ductal morphogenesis and adult ductal branching patterns were examined in the rat prostate by a microdissection method. The rat prostate consists of paired (right and left) subdivisions which correspond in large part to the classically defined lobes: ventral prostate, lateral prostate, dorsal prostate, and coagulating gland. Of particular interest was the finding that the lateral prostate consists of two different ductal zones: (1) lateral type 1 prostate with 5-7 long main ducts (resembling miniature palm trees) that extend cranially towards both the seminal vesicle and dorsal prostate to arborize near the bladder neck, and (2) lateral type 2 prostate with 5-6 short main ducts that arborize caudal to the bladder neck and give rise to compact bushy glands. Both lateral prostatic groups had a ductal-acinar organization. The adult structure of the other rat prostatic lobes was also examined, and closely resembled their mouse counterparts. The ventral prostate, which had 2-3 pairs of slender main ducts per side, and the coagulating gland, which had 1 main duct per side, was completely ductal in structure. In contrast, the dorsal prostate, which had 5-6 pairs of main ducts per side, had a ductal-acinar structure. Ductal branching morphogenesis occurred at different rates in different lobes and was essentially complete in the prostate at the 30 days. Immunocytochemical studies with an antibody to DP-1, a major secretory protein of the rat dorsal prostate, revealed that secretory function was initiated at approximately 30 days after birth in the coagulating gland, the dorsal prostate, and lateral type 1 prostate. A consistent feature of the lateral type 2 prostate was the absence of DP-1. On Western blots, DP-1 was detected in the secretion of the coagulating gland, lateral type 1 and dorsal prostate, but not in the ventral and lateral type 2 prostate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirmed this result and demonstrated that the lateral type 2 prostate expressed several low-molecular weight secretory proteins not found in the other lobes of the prostate. On the whole, the rat prostate exhibited considerable heterogeneity both between and within lobes in developmental processes, ductal patterning, histology, and functional expression.  相似文献

Although gastropods have been crawling through the ocean and on the land for 60 million years, we still know very little about the sticky mucus produced in their foot. Most research has been focused on marine species in particular and, to a lesser extent, on the well‐known terrestrial species Arion vulgaris and Cornu aspersum. Within this study, we aim to characterize the foot anatomy of a smaller representative of the family Helicidae, the banded snail Cepaea hortensis. We are particularly interested in the microanatomy of the foot glands, their position, and the histochemical nature of their secretory content. Characterization of the dorsal foot region of Cepaea hortensis reveals four glands, differing in their size and in the granules produced. Histochemically, three of them react positively for sugars (PAS staining and lectin affinity tests for mannose, glucose and N‐acetyl‐d ‐glucosamine) and acidic proteins (positive Alcian blue and Toluidine blue staining), indicating the presence of acidic glycosaminoglycans. The fourth gland type does not react to any of these dyes. The ventral pedal region includes two different gland types, which are positive for the presence of acidic glycoproteins, with a lectin affinity for mannose only. A comparison with Helix pomatia indicates differences regarding the number of glands and their contents. In Helix, only three gland types are described in the dorsal region of the foot, which show a similar granular appearance but nevertheless differ in their chemical composition. Congruently, there are two gland types in the ventral region in both species, whereas in Helix an additional sugar moiety is found. This raises the question whether these differences between the pedal glandular systems of both helicid species are the result of protection or size‐related adaptations, as they occur in the same habitat.  相似文献
