The number and developmental stages of florets were determinedin each spikelet of the spike in the main shoots of spring wheat.Samples were taken frequently from plants grown in a phytotronand in a nitrogen application field-test. Ten stages of development,from floret initiation until anthesis, were recognized and described. Inter-spikelet variation in the total number of initiated floretswas rather small. However, the number of florets at advancedstages of development, as well as the number of grains, washighest in the central spikelets in which florets initiatedfirst. Floret initiation did not proceed beyond spike emergence,whereafter the distal florets and the spikelet apex degenerated.Grain-set was restricted to florets which had developed at leastto the stage of visible anther lobes at spike emergence. Plants of wheat (Triticum aestlvum L.) cv. Aotea were grownat high or low nitrogen levels and in a natural photoperiodor continuous light. Starting 17–21 days from the double-ridgestage, eight plants from each treatment were sampled every 3days until anthesis, and the two basal, the sixth, and the terminalspikelets were sectioned longitudinally. A developmental scorewas assigned to each floret and rates of development calculated.Continuous light hastened development but reduced the numberof spikelets per ear, while high nitrogen delayed developmentbut increased spikelet numbers. The number of florets initiatedin each spikelet varied within narrow limits, but grain settingdepended strongly on spikelet position and on treatment. Althoughflorets were initiated in acropetal succession, the rate ofdevelopment tended to increase up to floret 4 but then declinedmarkedly. As a result grain setting was confined to basal floretpositions, although the two basal spikelets developed so slowlythat they contributed relatively little to grain yield. Distalflorets degenerated almost simultaneously at or before ear emergence,but those in intermediate positions continued to develop untilafter fertilization in the lower florets. Four clones of Trifolium repens L., originating from Iceland,Denmark and Israel, were cultivated in controlled environmentchambers at 10, 14, 18 and 22°C. Seed set at 10°C was,on average, 45% lower than at 18°C. Generally, seed frequencieswere higher in the stylar ovule positions than in the basal.This polarization became more pronounced at low temperatures.At least 30% of the decrease in seed set was caused by inadequatepollen tube growth. This was further supported by in vitro studieswhich showed that pollen developed significantly shorter pollentubes at low temperatures and a strong positive correlationbetween the capacity of male parents to induce seed set in basalovule positions and the length of pollen tubes in vitro. Femaleage, determined by days relative to anthesis, was also foundto have a significant influence on seed set, i.e. when pollinationwas delayed until the fifth day of flowering, seed set decreasedby an average of 60% when compared to florets pollinated onthe first day of anthesis. Pollen age did not influence seedset. In perennial ryegrass seed yield is low. Pollination, fertilizationand early stages of seed development are critical periods forthe realization of the yield potential. As intact plants aredifficult to handle, we used detached spikelets to study effectsof temperature and genotype on seed set and seed development. Plants of four cultivars were grown in pots. Just prior to flowering,spikelets were detached from the ears and put on water. Afterpollination, various spikelets of each plant were placed atdifferent temperatures (14/14, 17/12 or 20/15°C). Sevendays after pollination the percentage seed set and the lengthof the developing seeds (caryopses) were assessed. Only floretsin the four basal positions were used. For each cultivar an analysis of variance for unbalanced datawas carried out. There were highly significant difference amonggenotypes for seed set and caryopsis length. There was no evidencefor genotypic variation for tolerance to low temperatures. Neithertemperature nor floret position had an effect on seed set. Little is known about interactions between seeds within theinflorescence of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) and theireffect on final seed weight. These relations were investigatedin two glasshouse experiments using two genotypes, by reducingthe number of seeds in an inflorescence at anthesis. In thefirst experiment, entire spikelets were removed to study therelations between seeds in different spikelets. The effectson seed dry weight were not proportional to the number of spikeletsremoved. In one genotype, removal of two-thirds of the spikeletsincreased seed dry weight of the remaining seeds by 15%. Inthe other genotype, such treatment did not increase seed dryweight. In the second experiment, investigating seed interactionswithin a spikelet, either two proximal seeds or two centralseeds were maintained in a spikelet by removing the other ovulesin combination with no or 75% shading. Shading by 75% reducedseed dry weight by about 10%. In the unshaded treatment, seeddry weight was not affected by ovule removal. Under shading,the central seeds in a spikelet were about 12% heavier if theygrew alone, in contrast to the proximal seeds. The effects ofa reduction in seed number on seed dry weight were not relatedto the final nitrogen concentration of seeds. These experimentsshow that assimilate partitioning and the relationship betweenseeds in the inflorescence of perennial ryegrass are alreadylargely determined at anthesis; increasing seed yield by manipulationsafter anthesis is not feasible.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany. To clarify whether new vegetative tillers that develop aroundanthesis in aLolium perenne seed crop can depress seed yields,the possible competition for carbohydrates or nitrogen betweenthe seeds and new tillers that develop after the onset of anthesiswas investigated. In two greenhouse experiments the number oftillers per plant was varied by a combination of cutting, nitrogensupply, light quality and light intensity treatments. Two genotypeswith different tillering rates were used. Seed yield per earwas largely independent of the number of tillers and regrowthof cut tillers after the onset of anthesis. It increased inone genotype, but only under low light and a reduced nutrientavailability, and no new tillers were produced. The amount ofwater-soluble carbohydrates in the reproductive tillers increasedin both clones under these conditions. Under more favourableconditions the increased tillering rate and regrowth of tillersafter cutting did not adversely affect seed yield per ear ineither clone, although carbohydrate reserves in the floweringtillers were sharply reduced. Tiller removal increased the concentrationand amount of nitrogen in the remaining flowering tillers, irrespectiveof the amount of regrowth. It is concluded that competitionfor carbohydrates or nitrogen between the seeds and new vegetativetillers that develop after the onset of anthesis, is not a majorcause of the low and variable seed yields inL. perenne seedcrops. Effect of Water Deficit on Sporogenesis in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Plants of Triticum aestivum L., cv. Gabo, were grown in a glasshousefor 4 weeks and then transferred to a controlled environmentwith 20±1 °C temperature and 16 h photoperiod. Theywere subjected to water deficit by withholding the water supplyduring various stages of floral development, including thoseimmediately before meiosis and all stages until just after anthesis. The proportion of apparently normal florets which produced grainwas reduced when water deficit occurred during and immediatelyafter meiosis in the generative tissues. The effect of thisreduced grain set on total grain yield was partially compensatedby an increase in the weight of the remaining grains. Cross-pollinationbetween stressed and well-watered plants showed that grain setwas reduced as a direct consequence of the induction of malesterility by water stress, whereas female fertility was unaffected.A large proportion of the anthers on water-stressed plants weresmall and shrivelled, did not dehisce normally and containedpollen which was devoid of normal cytoplasmic constituents andshowed no staining reaction with triphenyl tetrazolium chloride.This effect on male fertility was not a result of desiccationof the sporogenous tissue, but an indirect outcome of the decreasein water potential elsewhere in the plant. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Hereward was grown inthe field in two double-walled polyethylene-covered tunnelswithin each of which a temperature gradient was superimposedon diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in temperature. The meantemperature between anthesis and harvest maturity varied from14.3 to 18.4C among plots within these tunnels. The CO2 concentrationwas controlled at different values in each tunnel; seasonalmean concentrations were 380 and 684 µmol CO2 mol–1air. Crops were also grown outside the tunnels at ambient temperaturesand CO2. Samples of seeds were harvested sequentially from eachplot between anthesis and harvest maturity. Seed germinationand seed survival during subsequent air-dry storage were determinedfor each sample. The onset of both ability to germinate anddesiccation tolerance (ability to germinate after rapid desiccationto 10–15% moisture content and subsequent rehydration)coincided in all environments. Full germination capacity (>97%, determined at 10C) was reached 4–18 d before theend of the seed-filling phase (mass maturity) in most cases.There was little or no decline in germination capacity duringsubsequent seed development and maturation. Differences in seedquality were evident, however, throughout seed development andmaturation when seed survival curves during subsequent storagewere compared. Potential longevity in air-dry storage (assessedby the value K1 of the seed viability equation) improved consistentlyboth before and after mass maturity. There was a significantpositive relation between the rate of increase in potentiallongevity (dK1Idt) and temperature (the minimum temperaturefor seed quality development was 4.8 C), but neither CO2 concentrationnor production within the polyethylene tunnels affected thisrelation. The effects of red light, far-red light, Gibberellin A3, andethephon were studied on the germination of lettuce seeds cv.Grand Rapids harvested at different stages of development. Seeds did not become capable of germination until 8 days afteranthesis. Red light promoted seed germination from the age of8–9 days following anthesis up to the newly mature stage.Ten or 11 days following anthesis, a large percentage of seedsbecame capable of germination in the dark and therefore couldbe considered not dormant. They were affected by far-red light,but less so than the mature seeds. The effect of light on the germination of developing seeds appearedto be similar to the known light effect on mature lettuce seedgermination. Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis cv. Cookand S. guianensis var. pauciflora cv. Bandeirante were defoliatedand placed in a naturally lit glasshouse at 23/18 °C, 28/23°C or 33/28 °C (day/night). After exposure to 14 h daysand after floral induction with 30 cycles of 11 h, plants wereallocated to 11, 12, 13 or 14 h during flowering and seed formation. Floral initiation occurred after 10–15 short-day cycles.Flower appearance was hastened by warm temperatures and spikenumber per plant at 20 d after flower appearance was negativelyrelated to temperature and greater in Cook than in Bandeirante.Exposure to 13- and 14-h days reduced the continued differentiationof inflorescences in Bandeirante, and in Cook in warm temperatures.Floret number per spike was greatest at 23/18 °C and a higherproportion of florets aborted in Bandeirante at 33/ 28 °C.Variations in seed setting of the bi-articulate loment of Bandeiranteare described. This paper describes the effects of sterilizing certain floretson the development of others within the ears of wheat, cultivarMaris Ranger. Sterilization of all the florets in spikelets2, 4, 6, and 8 (numbered from the base of the ear upwards) ledto more grain setting and greater grain growth in the untreatedspikelets. These compensatory increases were insufficient toprevent a depression in the yield of grain per ear. Sterilizationof more than one of the basal florets of spikelet 8 led to amore frequent setting of the grain in the distal florets onthat spikelet and to the centrally positioned grain becomingheavier. The physiological basis for the inhibitory influences of theolder and developing grain on the unfertilized florets and youngergrain is discussed.  相似文献

Seed growth characteristics of Aesculus hippocastanum were examinedin detail during development from about 70 to 140 d after anthesis(DAA), mainly in 1988 and 1989. Mean fresh and dry weights increasedfor both the axis and the whole seed up to the time of peakseed fall at 135 DAA with no cessation before fruit abscission.Water per seed increased up to 100 DAA, after which no furtherincrease occurred; moisture content declined for the embryonicaxis and whole seed respectively from above 75 and 65% at 95DAA to 65 and 50% at 130 DAA. At fruit shedding in 1990 waterpotential values of -1·2, -2·6 and -1·1MPa were observed for the testa, cotyledon and axis tissuesrespectively; relevant sorption isotherms are presented. Decreases in seed moisture content during development were accompaniedby increases in desiccation tolerance and in germinability,both reaching their maximum at the time of peak seed fall. Atmaturity, only about 10% viability was retained on drying seedto 20% moisture content; it is confirmed that the seeds are'recalcitrant'. The exact relationship between moisture contentand germination during development was dependent on the deptof dormancy, as judged by the period of chilling required; eachduration of chilling at 2°C within the range 3-12 weeksyields a curve of sigmoid shape. No germination occurred at26°C without chilling, but nearly full germination can beobserved for samples collected at 6 weeks before maximum seedfall with 12 weeks chilling. The normal pattern of maize floral development of staminate florets on the terminal inflorescence (tassel) and pistillate florets on the lateral inflorescences (ears) is disrupted by the recessive mutation tassel seed 2. Tassel seed 2 mutant plants develop pistillate florets instead of staminate florets in the tassel. In addition, the ears of tassel seed 2 plants display irregular rowing of kernels due to the development of the normally suppressed lower floret of each spikelet. The morphology of tassel and ear florets of the recessive maize mutant tassel seed 2 has been compared to those of wild-type maize through development. We have identified the earliest stages at which morphological signs of sex differentiation are evident. We find that sex determination occurs during the same stage on tassel and ear development. Early postsex determination morphology of florets in wild-type ears and in tassel seed 2 tassels and ears is identical.  相似文献

Aegilops Kotschyi Boiss. plants produce three florets per spikelet(of which the terminal floret is commonly sterile) and exhibitphysiological heterocarpy in the two caryopses which developin each spikelet. Germinability of the basal caryopsis, butnot of the upper one, was subject to environmental influencesto which the parent plant was exposed during its development.Basal caryopses produced by plants grown at low temperature,or in 16-h photoperiods, were more dormant than when producedby plants grown at higher temperature, or in 8-h photo-periods.Germinability of the upper caryopses was equally high in allcases and independent of the parental environment. Although the development of the soybean ovule has been fairlywell studied, knowledge of the sequence of events in the seedcoat during the first 3 weeks after flowering is incomplete.The goal of the present study was to document, using light microscopy,the early development of the soybean seed coat with respectto changes in structure and histochemistry. At anthesis, theseed coat consists of an outer layer of cuboidal epidermal cellssurrounding several layers of undifferentiated parenchyma (whichtogether constitute the outer integument), and an inner layerof cuboidal endothelial cells (the inner integument). At 3 dpost anthesis (dpa), the inner integument has expanded to includethree to five layers of relatively large cells with thick, heavily-stainingcell walls immediately adjacent to the endothelium. By 18 dpa,the outer integument has developed into a complex of tissuescomprised of an inner layer of thick-walled parenchyma, an outerlayer of thin-walled parenchyma containing vascular tissue whichhas grown down from the lateral vascular bundles in the hilumregion, a hypodermis of hourglass cells, and palisade layer(epidermis). The thick-walled parenchyma of the inner integumenthas become completely stretched and compressed, leaving a single,deeply staining wall layer directly above the endothelium. At21 dpa, the outermost cells of the endosperm have begun to compressthe endothelium. At 45 dpa (physiological maturity) the seedcoat retains only the palisade layer, hourglass cells, and afew layers of thin-walled parenchyma. The innermost layer ofthe endosperm, the aleurone layer, adheres to the inside ofthe seed coat. This knowledge will be invaluable in future studiesof manipulation of gene expression in the seed coat to modifyseed or seed coat characteristics. Reproductive development in cereals is not easy to investigatebecause their quantitative response to environmental factorsmakes it difficult to synchronize the plants. In this paper,one of our aims was to assess whether Lolium temulentum strainCeres, a qualitative long-day grass, could serve as a modelof reproductive development for cereals. The morphological patternsfrom floral transition to seed set were studied. A flowering scale was established to evaluate developmentalrate during spike morphogenesis. Apex growth was found to increaseaccording to biphasic kinetics; double ridge appearance markedthe beginning of an exponential phase. Developmental progression and apical growth rate were both increasedby giving repeated long days. In contrast, the final numberof lateral spikelets (20–25) could not be manipulatedafter the beginning of long-day treatment. When plants were kept in continuous light from the beginningof induction, double ridges appeared on the fifth 24 h cycle.Spikelet initiation began in the upper mid-part of the spike,and then extended acro- and basipetally. The phase of spikeletinitiation lasted 6 d, with l?5 to 1?9 spikelets being produceddaily. Within each spikelet, florets were initiated at an averagerate of l?3 primordia per day and developed acropetally. Thefirst signs of apical site degeneration were observed in themost developed upper spikelets just before heading. Ear emergenceoccurred between the 20th and 25th cycles of continuous light;anthesis was observed 6 or 7 d later. The proportion of floretssetting grain averaged about 40%. Grains were produced mainlyin the lower spikelets while the upper mid-part of the inflorescenceshowed a much lower fertility rate. Complex developmental gradients described in this paper suggestthat L. temulentum could serve as a model of reproductive developmentin cereals, with the added advantage of flowering in responseto a single long-day. An examination was made of the effects of ethanol at 0.2–6.0%(v/v) on the germination, under aerobic conditions, of intactand dehusked seeds of indica rice (cv. Assam IV), which hadbeen harvested 14, 21 and 28 d after anthesis, and of the japonicarice (cv. Sasanishiki), which had been harvested 30 and 60 dafter anthesis. The inhibition of germination caused by dehuskingjaponica rice was overcome by 0.5–5% ethanol, with maximumgermination (frequently 100%) achieved at 3–5% (30 d afteranthesis) or 1–4.5% (60 d after anthesis) ethanol. Furtherincreases in the ethanol concentration reduced germination.The germination of dehusked indica rice was slightly inhibitedat 0.5 and 1% ethanol, whilst the promotion of germination by2% ethanol increased as the seeds matured. At all harvests germinationwas greatest at 3% ethanol, and at 5–6% ethanol germinationfell to 0%. Inhibition, no effect, or minimal stimulation ofthe germination of intact seeds of both japonica and indicarice by ethanol was observed at the concentrations examined.The absence of oxygen stimulated germination of dehusked japonicarice, but this germination was inhibited by ethanol. In contrastethanol had little or no effect on the failure of dehusked indicaseeds to germinate in anaerobic conditions. Thus ethanol treatmentmay help break the strong dormancy of dehusked seeds of indicaand japonica rice. The possible role of ethanol in stimulatinggermination in rice is discussed. The longevity and desiccation tolerance of samples of seedsof a japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) harvested serially duringdevelopment from plants grown in two temperature regimes, viz28/20 °C and 32/24 °C (12/12 h) were determined. Massmaturity (defined as the end of the seed-filling phase) occurred19·7 and 18·3 d after 50% anthesis, respectively.Longevity (determined at 40 °C with 15% moisture contentand quantified by the value of the constant Ki of the seed viabilityequation) improved during seed development and maturation until17 and 14 d after mass maturity in the cooler and warmer regimes,respectively, but declined thereafter. Changes in Ki with timewere similar in the two environments until mass maturity, butthe increase in Ki values after mass maturity was much greaterin the cooler regime. Tolerance of desiccation to low (4%) moisturecontents improved until 22 and 14 d after mass maturity in thecooler and warmer regimes, respectively, when maturation dryinghad reduced seed moisture contents naturally to 24 and 32% moisturecontent, respectively. Further delays to seed harvest reduceddesiccation tolerance, particularly in the warmer environment.Comparison among 15 samples of seeds harvested at differenttimes in the two environments showed a strong correlation (r= 0·947, P < 0·01) between longevity (Ki) anddesiccation tolerance (to 4% moisture content).
