This paper adds new data on the pollen and orbicule morphology of 61 Dioscorea L. (Dioscoreaceae) species to the survey of Schols et al . (2001). The results indicate that pollen characters may be significant in infrageneric systematics in Dioscorea . Pollen and orbicule characters are described based on observations with light microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and are critically evaluated and discussed in the context of existing hypotheses of systematic relationships within the genus. Pollen is mostly disulculate (sometimes monosulcate) with a perforate, microreticulate, striate, gemmate, rugulate, or cerebroid perforate sexine. The basal section Stenophora is one of the few sections with monosulcate pollen. Brachyandra , Cardiocapsa , and Seriflorae , three Malagasy sections, are characterized by striate pollen. Pollen morphology strongly supports section Enantiophyllum as a monophyletic group. The correlation between pollen size and tuber type, as suggested previously by P. Su (1987), is confirmed by our data. The spider genus Weintrauboa new genus (Araneae, Pimoidae) is described to place two species of pimoids from Japan and adjacent islands that were formerly classified in the linyphiid genus Labulla . Weintrauboa contortipes (Karsch) new comb., the type species, and W. chikunii (Oi) new comb. are redescribed. Parsimony analysis of morphological characters provides robust support for the monophyly of the genus Weintrauboa and corroborates the monophyly of Pimoa , Pimoidae, and the clade Linyphiidae plus Pimoidae. Middle Eocene seagrass compressions occur in the Avon Park Limestone Formation near Gulf Hammock on Florida's west coast. One group of specimens resembles two seagrass species of the hydrocharitaceans, Thalassia and Enhalus , that are living today in tropical and subtropical shallow marine environments. The Eocene plant has a dimorphic rhizome system consisting of a creeping, monopodial, plagiotropic rhizome with small roots and orthotropic laterals (short shoots) that occur in pairs every three to five nodes. Laterals bifurcate and produce glabrous eligulate leaves in an alternate and distichous arrangement. Foliage leaves have fibrous basal sheaths, blades with parallel venation, perpendicular and oblique cross veins, prominent midrib, and smooth, entire margins. Throughout the plant are numerous brown-coloured tanniferous dots and deposits of small calcium oxalate crystals. Based on features of these non-reproductive structures, the Florida Eocene seagrass is recognized as a new genus and species Thalassites parkavonensis in the Hydrocharitaceae.   © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 19–30.  相似文献

The genus Clathrina has one of the most difficult systematic arrangements in the Porifera, Class Calcarea. Few morphological characters can be used to describe its species, and the systematics and the geographical distribution of its species have changed several times, according to the point of view of the systematists. 'Lumpers' consider that clathrinas are morphologically plastic, while 'splitters' believe that even slight morphological differences should be considered sufficient to distinguish between species. The morphology of several specimens/species of Clathrina , including the type species, when possible, was studied and used to produce the first revision of this genus. Using results obtained from previous morphological and molecular studies, the morphological characters were chosen and analysed in all studied specimens. In total, 43 species were found, nine of which are new to science. These results agree with the viewpoint that morphological characters such as type and distribution of spicules, size of actines, spines, anastomosis of the cormus, organization of the osculum and presence of granules in cells, are useful when establishing the taxonomy of the genus.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 139 , 1−62.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the genera in the geometrid tribe Scopulini (Lepidoptera: Sterrhinae) were examined using 141 characters of adult morphology and ecology. The study material included 92 species, representing all previously recognized genera and covering the morphological variation and full geographical range of the tribe. The cladistic analysis resulted in 20 equally parsimonious trees and a strict consensus cladogram based on these was well resolved. A majority of the recovered synapomorphic characters have been used previously in the taxonomy of the tribe. However, many novel characters were found in the sclerotized structures of the thorax. Many previously recognized genera were found to be nonmonophyletic and based on the present revised, synapomorphy-based classification, the number of recovered genera is reduced considerably. Twenty new generic synonyms and 90 new or revived species combinations are proposed. Seven genera are considered valid, with the large genus Scopula Schrank including over 85% of all species in the tribe. The taxonomic history of the tribe is reviewed and the problems of earlier classifications are discussed. A key to the genera is presented, although an informal diagnosis is preferred. Hexabathynella is the only cosmopolitan genus of the order Bathynellacea (Crustacea). The known species number 18, found in Europe (9), Africa (1), South America (2), North America (3) and Australia and New Zealand (3). Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the least derived species are those from South America and the most derived those from the Iberian Peninsula, North America and Australia. The five species with the most plesiomorphic characters occur in salt or brackish water, which supports a marine origin for the genus. Phylogenetic and biogeographical analyses suggest that the distribution of the genus can be explained by dispersion and a double vicariant biogeographical model based on plate tectonics and the evolution of the Tethys during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Study of floral anatomy, micromorphology, palynology and onotogeny has revealed new characters for phylogenetic analysis in the genus Scleranthus . Cladistic analysis of these characters, along with those previously available, suggests that the genus consists of Eurasian/Mediterranean and Australasian sister clades. Gynoecial morphology and development are closely similar in all species, suggesting the genus is monophyletic despite its disjunct northern and southern hemisphere distribution. Variation in pollen:ovule ratios and their implications for the evolution of Scleranthus species are also discussed and it is concluded that a range of breeding strategies intermediate between autogamy and xenogamy exists in the genus. The sepiids are characterized by their cuttlebone or sepion, an internal shell resulting from secondary mineralization of a chitinous 'gladius'. The various species are identified using a combination of shell criteria and 'soft-part' characters. Using mitochondrial genes, we established phylogenetic relationships of sepiids including the three accepted genera ( Sepia , Sepiella , Metasepia ) and a species complex of uncertain status ( Doratosepion ). We showed the Sepia genus to be paraphyletic and found no direct correlation between geographical distribution and systematics. We mapped, on the molecular tree, shell characteristics commonly used as reliable diagnostic criteria for taxonomy. Due to the plasticity of the shell, these characters did not appear phylogenetically informative. Ecological diversification and phylogeny of emydid turtles   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Ecological diversification is a central topic in ecology and evolutionary biology. We undertook the first comprehensive species-level phylogenetic analysis of Emydidae (an ecologically diverse group of turtles), and used the resulting phylogeny to test four general hypotheses about ecological diversification. Phylogenetic analyses were based on data from morphology (237 parsimony-informative characters) and mitochondrial DNA sequences (547 parsimony-informative characters) and included 39 of the 40 currently recognized emydid species. Combined analyses of all data provide a well-supported hypothesis for intergeneric relationships, and support monophyly of the two subfamilies (Emydinae and Deirochelyinae) and most genera (with the notable exception of Clemmys and Trachemys ). Habitat and diet were mapped onto the combined-data tree to test fundamental hypotheses about ecological diversification. Using continuous coding of ecological characters showed that lineages changed in habitat before diet, ecological change was most frequently from generalist to specialist, and habitat and diet rarely changed on the same branch of the phylogeny. However, we also demonstrate that the results of ancestral trait reconstructions can be highly sensitive to character coding method (i.e. continuous vs. discrete). Two new, closely related species of Struthanthus (Loranthaceae) are described, S. meridionalis from southern Bolivia and S. prancei from northern Brazil, each showing significant deviations from the generic norm in their inflorescence morphology. In both cases, a very high proportion of inflorescences bear bracteolate and/or ebracteolate monads as lateral units rather than the triads which characterize the rest of the genus. The filmy ferns of the tribe Trichomaneae, synonymous with Tichomanes s.L., show various constructions of their root system that correspond to different growth forms as well as ecology. Most terrestrial species possess a short erect shoot with numerous thick roots, whereas epiphytic species have a long creeping rhizome that may develop a few thin roots. An evolutionary progression from ferns with well-developed roots to ferns without roots is postulated. Rootless species occur in two monophyletic groups, subgen. Crepidomanes and subgen. Didymoglossum. The results are summarized in a new classification for the tribe. Secondary simplification, e.g. loss of roots, is discussed as an adaptive trait in epiphytic plants. Transformed structures such as root-like shoots and adhesive hairs are observed in rootless taxa and their evolutionary significance is briefly discussed. Climbing filmy ferns are recognized as possible closely related species based on the similarities in their root systems.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of 64 freshwater Barbus s.s. species distributed in basins around the Mediterranean Sea were assessed using cytochrome b sequences. Our results are in concordance with previous morphological and genetic studies, which proposed that these species belong to two major lineages (or subgenera): Barbus and Luciobarbus . We were particularly interested in phylogenetic relationships among species of the Luciobarbus lineage that are primarily found in the southern Mediterranean region from the Iberian Peninsula to the Middle East. In the Luciobarbus lineage, species that were previously attributed to the Capoeta genus were clustered. In this study, we observed short internodes between monophyletic groups having a geographical agreement around the Mediterranean. However, groups from the opposite sides of the Mediterranean Sea (Iberian Peninsula– Capoeta , north-western Africa–Middle East) seem to be phylogenetically close. We therefore infer that rapid radiation of Luciobarbus species in the Late Miocene better fits our data rather than gradual founder events in the southern Mediterranean. We propose that the biogeographical event along an east–west route, responsible for the present distribution of Luciobarbus species, was the 'Lago Mare' phase of the Mediterranean Sea that provided a rapid dispersal route over extensive distances. The taxonomy of the fringe-toed lizards of the Acanthodactylus scutellatus group has long been unstable and no consensus exists on the systematic status of its various forms. A multivariate analysis of morphological characters, performed on over 1000 specimens from most of the African range of this group, allowed us to clarify the specific allocation of most of the Saharan populations included in this species group. Based on comparisons of morphology between allopatric and sympatric populations of this complex, we propose the recognition of six biological species. Our results confirm the specific status of Acanthodactylus aureus , A. dumerili , A. scutellatus, A. longipes and the recently described A. taghitensis . In addition, we re-validate A. senegalensis (occurring from Mauritania and Mali south to Senegal), which has been treated as a synonym of A. dumerili by previous authors. Acanthodactylus longipes is reported for the first time from coastal Mauritania, and A. taghitensis (previously known only from a very small region in Algeria) is reported from continental Mauritania. The systematic section of this paper includes a full list of examined material, diagnosis and known distribution of each species, in addition to some information on geographical variation and ecology. Because of the poor state of knowledge of many of the gymnophthalmid genera, systematic revision is necessary to render the classification consistent with evolutionary history. To that end, I conducted a review of the species of three genera of the Cercosaurinae which appear to form a monophyletic group: Cercosaura , Pantodactylus , and Prionodactylus . Phylogenetic analysis of 61 morphological characters was conducted after specimens of all species were examined to evaluate the composition of each taxon. The phylogenetic reconstruction suggested that the genus Prionodactylus was paraphyletic. A new phylogenetic classification is proposed that synonymizes Pantodactylus and Prionodactylus with Cercosaura. Cercosaura is redefined to include 11 species and seven subspecies.
