Tree species can generally be classified into two groups, heterobaric and homobaric leafed species, according to whether bundle-sheath extensions (BSEs) are found in the leaf (heterobaric leaf) or not (homobaric leaf). In this study, we study whether the leaf type is related to the growth environment and/or life form type, even in a tropical rain forest, where most trees have evergreen leaves that are generally homobaric. Accordingly, we investigated the distribution of leaf morphological differences across different life forms of 250 tree species in 45 families in a tropical rainforest. In total, 151 species (60%) in 36 families had homobaric leaves, and 99 species (40%) in 21 families had heterobaric leaves. We found that the proportion of heterobaric and homobaric leaf species differed clearly across taxonomic groups and life form types, which were divided into five life form types by their mature tree heights (understory, subcanopy, canopy, and emergent species) and as canopy gap species. Most understory (94%) and subcanopy (83%) species such as Annonaceae had homobaric leaves. In contrast, heterobaric leaf trees appeared more frequently in the canopy species (43%), the emergent species (96%) (such as Dipterocarpaceae), and the canopy gap species (62%). Our results suggest that tree species in the tropical rainforest adapt to spatial differences in the environmental conditions experienced at the mature height of each tree species, such as light intensity and vapor pressure difference, by having differing leaf types (heterobaric or homobaric) because these types potentially have different physiological and/or mechanical functions.  相似文献

The infections of two species of mistletoes in Baja California, Mexico were investigated for spatial patterns of abundance, and for an effect of the dispersal patterns of mistletoe seeds on these spatial patterns. Mistletoe distributions were mapped and the dispersal of mistletoe seeds was observed. Most mistletoes seeds were dispersed locally to the parent tree or to nearby trees. While mistletoe distributions were highly clumped at the level of the individual tree, no spatial pattern was found above the scale of the individual tree. Infected trees were no more clumped than the overall host population, and infected trees had no more mistletoes on nearby surrounding trees than did uninfected trees. Trees showed no spatial autocorrelation in the number of mistletoes they supported. Simulations using a spatially explicit simulation model with local dispersal and stochasticity in seed dispersal, host mortality, and mistletoe mortality were used to interpret the field results. Simulation results suggest that dispersal patterns affect the overall level of variance in the number of mistletoes per tree but do not lead to spatial patterns in abundance above the scale of the tree. Thus, both simulation and field systems give the surprising result that local dispersal does not lead to spatial autocorrelation in the numbers of mistletoes per tree.Abbreviations AI = Arroyo Inspiracion - VSR = Valle San Rafael  相似文献

In tropical rain forests, high canopy trees have diverse and abundant populations of ants and spiders. However, accessing high trees and their fauna remains difficult; thus, how ants and spiders interact in the canopy remains unclear. To better understand the interspecific interactions between these two dominant arthropod groups, we investigated their spatial distributions at the canopy surface in a tropical rain forest in Borneo. We sampled ants and spiders six times between 2009 and 2011 by sweeping with an insect net at the tree crown surfaces of 190 emergent or tall (≥20 m in height) trees. We collected 438 ant individuals belonging to 94 species and 1850 spider individuals (1630 juveniles and 220 adults) belonging to 142 morphospecies (adults only) from a total of 976 samples. The fact that we collected four times more spider individuals than ant individuals suggests that fewer ants forage at the tree crown surface than previously thought. The number of spider individuals negatively correlated with the number of ant individuals and the number of ant species, indicating significant exclusivity between ant and spider spatial distributions at the tree crown surface. Niche‐overlap between the two taxa confirmed this observation. Although our data do not address the causes of these spatial distributions, antagonistic interspecific interactions such as interference behaviors and intra‐guild predation are ecological mechanisms that give rise to exclusive spatial distributions.  相似文献

Biodiversity is threatened by the loss and fragmentation of habitats. The role of hedgerows in maintaining biodiversity is well established, but few studies have addressed the importance for biodiversity of the intrinsic characteristics of hedgerows and the quality of hedgerow networks along a spatial scale. We examined three quality indices providing information at different territorial levels: density in the landscape, structural diversity and wood production. We performed an acoustic survey in a grassland to estimate the species abundance and community composition of bats (9 taxa) and bush crickets (11 species). Using an approach based on species and traits, we assessed how hedgerow quality influenced the activity of these taxa at different spatial scales (from 50 to 1000 m) and focused on three types of traits: bush cricket mobility ability, bat foraging strategy and habitat specialization. In general, our results showed the importance of hedgerow quality for bats and bush crickets, but the strength of the association between taxa and hedgerows varied substantially among the species and the spatial scales. Although it depends on the taxa, the production, density and structural diversity of hedgerows each had an overall positive effect. Our results suggested that these effects were generally more important at large scales. The scale effect of the production index is the best predictor of activity for bat and bush cricket taxa and traits. Our results showed the importance of hedgerow quality for the ecology of bat and bush cricket communities and could be used to improve conservation management.  相似文献

Forests support high concentrations of species and beetles in particular are often used to evaluate forest biodiversity. Ancient pasture woodlands are facing a major decline in Europe mainly due to the abandonment of traditional management and subsequent succession. We studied click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) in one of the largest central-European remnants of pasture woodland in Lány Game Park (Czech Republic) using flight interception traps placed at standing veteran trees. The gradient of sun-exposure, circumference of stem, height and vitality of tree and tree species were studied in relation to the species richness of click beetles and their ecological groups. Total species richness reached nearly one half of the recently documented fauna in the study area and species accumulations showed us that the majority of species were represented. Most species preferred solitary trees in sun-exposed habitats and avoided shaded trees in closed canopies. The same results were obtained for ecological groups, such as saproxylic and non-saproxylic species, functional groups and guilds. Our results showed that the species richness of one of the most ecologically diverse beetle families, click beetles, benefits from a high level of sun exposure. Thus, the long spatial and temporal continuity of sun-exposed veteran trees could be a good predictor for sustainable forest management.  相似文献

Insect parasitism patterns are influenced by vegetation structure and landscape complexity. Our objective was to examine the effects of vegetation structure and landscape complexity on parasitism based on direct measurements of structure and diversity indices as well as on metrics based on remote sensing using Quickbird images. We collected 2266 lepidopteran larvae and pupae, including different families and habits, to estimate parasitism, and recorded vegetation characteristics in five 100-m2 transects and 18 1 ha-plots in the dry Chaco, Northwest Argentina. We calculated landscape metrics and semivariograms in the plots from the image. The plots represented four “complexity groups”: agricultural, riparian/hedgerow, bare ground, and forest plots. Mean parasitism in the study sites was 10.7% (min: 0%, max: 23%). Parasitism was highest in agricultural plots, lowest in forest plots, and intermediate in riparian/hedgerow and bare ground plots. The landscape model explained parasitism more than the vegetation model. The landscape final model included Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) Range, a measure of landscape heterogeneity, and Mean Shape Index, a measure of patch shape irregularity, and their interaction. The vegetation model included basal area and the Coefficient of Variation of tree density among transects, a measure of tree spatial distribution within a plot. Our results agree with previous studies that found higher parasitism in agricultural vs. non-agricultural environments in the subtropics, while riparian/hedgerow plots were important for conserving parasitism, as reported for temperate environments. We showed that under-explored tools such as the semivariogram and satellite band combinations were useful for the assessment of parasitism and that studying vegetation and landscape complexity simultaneously can help us examine mechanisms in detail. The identified variables related to high parasitism should be used for image classifications with a functional approach.  相似文献

Little is known about the spatial distribution of lianas on emergent trees in tropical rainforests and the factors affecting this distribution. The present study investigated the effects of an arboreal ant species, Crematogaster difformis, which forms myrmecophytic symbioses with two epiphytic ferns, Lecanopteris sp. and Platycerium sp., on the spatial distribution of lianas associated with emergent trees. Living lianas were placed onto trunk surfaces inside and outside the territories of the ants in the canopy, to examine their ability to remove them. The number of leaves pruned by the ants was significantly higher on lianas inside than outside their territories. The spatial overlap of the distributions of lianas and the two ferns on emergent trees were then examined. The frequency of liana colonization of tree crowns was found to be significantly lower on trees with than without ferns. Under the natural conditions, C. difformis workers were observed biting and pruning the lianas. These results suggest that C. difformis regulates the distribution of lianas on emergent trees.  相似文献

Analysing invasive spread from a landscape ecological perspective forms an important challenge in plant invasion ecology. The present study examines the effects of landscape structure on the spatial and temporal dynamics of an expanding black cherry Prunus serotina population within a rural landscape in Flanders, Belgium, carrying a dense network of interconnected hedgerows. The study area, 251 ha in size, harboured a total of 2962 P. serotina individuals. The population was characterised by a negative exponential age distribution, a high growth rate and an early and continuous reproduction throughout the species' life cycle. The historical rate of spread of the species through the hedgerow network progressively increased with time, especially during the last decade. Spatial point pattern analysis revealed that the individuals had a significantly clustered distribution pattern and were spatially aggregated around seed sources, hedgerow intersections and roosting trees. Logistic regression analysis confirmed the effect of landscape structure on P. serotina occurrence, suggesting directional long distance dispersal by avian dispersal vectors, resulting in a differential seed pressure throughout the hedgerow network due to the preference of dispersing birds for roosting in structurally rich hedgerow with large trees near hedgerow intersections. Hence, the distribution of P. serotina in agricultural landscapes was strongly mediated by dispersal processes. Furthermore, decreasing spatial aggregation along the species life cycle, with especially seedlings and saplings being significantly aggregated while adult individuals were mostly distributed at random, and a relative outward shift of seedling recruitment curves with time indicate density dependent mortality, probably caused by intraspecific competition.  相似文献

Old-growth deciduous forests in western Europe, for the most part, consist of small tracts that often may be atypical due to human disturbance, poor soil productivity or inaccessibility. In addition, very little information on tree age distributions, structural heterogeneity and tree spatial patterns appears to be available for west-European forests. Characterization of the structural features of tree populations in these old-growth stands can provide the basis to design conservation plans and also inform on how present forests might look in the absence of human interference. Four old-growth stands in a deciduous forest in the Cantabrian lowlands, northern Spain, were surveyed to determine forest structure and spatial patterns. Live and dead trees were identified, measured and mapped, and live trees were cored for age estimation. Structural heterogeneity was analyzed by means of the spatial autocorrelation of tree diameter, height and age, and the uni- and bivariate spatial patterns of trees were analyzed. The dominant species, Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur, showed reverse-J shaped size distributions but discontinuous age distributions, with maximum ages of 255–270 yr. Tree ages suggested that the forest was largely modified by past changes in forest-use, especially by temporal variation in grazing intensity. Spatial autocorrelation revealed that former parkland stands were heterogeneous with respect to tree height only, while high forest stands were composed of patches of even-aged and even-sized trees. Young trees were clumped at varying distances and establishment occurred preferentially in canopy gaps, except for Ilex aquifolium that mainly occurred beneath mature Quercus trees. Surviving trees became less intensely clumped in the dominant species, and more strongly clumped in understorey ones, which may have been due to the effects of intraspecific competition and of canopy trees on tree survival, respectively. The spatial associations between species varied within the forest, probably as a consequence of specific establishment preferences and competitive interactions.  相似文献

Hedgerows represent important components of agri-environment landscapes that are increasingly coming under threat from climate change, emergent diseases, invasive species and land use change. Given that population genetic data can be used to inform best-practice management strategies for woodland and hedgerow tree species, we carried out a study on hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.), a key component of hedgerows, on a regional basis using a combination of nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite markers. We found that levels of genetic diversity were high and comparable to, or slightly higher than, other tree species from the same region. Levels of population differentiation for both sets of markers, however, were extremely low, suggesting extensive gene flow via both seed and pollen. These findings suggest that a holistic approach to woodland management, one which does not necessarily rely on the concept of “seed zones” previously suggested, but which also takes into account populations with high and/or rare chloroplast (i.e. seed-specific) genetic variation, might be the best approach to restocking and replanting.  相似文献

Metapopulation and metacommunity theory may be extremely useful for understanding community composition and species distributions in fragmented landscapes. However, how well particular spatial ecological models represent natural systems is not known and so the general importance of those models is unclear. In three naturally fragmented landscapes in Tasmania, Australia, I sampled beetles from 67 sites, including continuous forest, small forest patches in a sedgeland matrix, streamside forest, and the matrix. Of forty commonly captured beetle species, at least 37% do not form metapopulations of any kind because they do not disperse far enough, disperse too far, or occur in the matrix. Only 7.5% of the species showed distributions consistent with a mainland‐island metapopulation, which was surprising given the mainland‐island structure of the landscape. These patterns were also consistent with a classic metapopulation. Deterministic metapopulations were probably common, involving at least 32% of species. Most predicted metacommunity patterns were not observed because only subsets of the fauna followed a particular metacommunity model. Seven, mostly flying, species were influenced only by habitat quality, supporting the Species‐sorting or Mass‐effects models, and the strong distinction between the beetle fauna of Eucalyptus patches and the matrix suggested an over‐riding influence of a Species‐sorting process. Seven, mostly flightless, species showed a negative relationship with increasing patch isolation, while another six, mostly flying, species showed the opposite pattern, with higher frequency of occurrence in more isolated patches. Both groups were strongly nested. The flying species were probably excluded from less isolated sites through interactions with poor dispersers , providing a novel mechanism leading to a nested distribution. The Patch‐dynamics and Species‐sorting processes were equally consistent with the pattern, emphasizing that these models are relatively simplistic when confronted with real community data. Additional complexity needs to be built into the models to accommodate the diverse patterns observed in natural communities.  相似文献

The vegetation dynamics of the savanna ecosystem are driven by complex interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, and thus are expected to exhibit emergent properties of biocomplexity. We explore the relative importance of static and dynamic drivers in explaining the patterns of mortality of large trees in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Data on large trees were collected from 22 transects in April 2006, and these transects were re‐sampled in November 2008. Of the 2546 individually‐identified trees that were re‐sampled, 290 (11.4%) died in the interim. We tested several competing hypotheses with varying levels of complexity, and found that mortality of large trees was affected mainly by both static (geophysical and landscape characteristics) and dynamic (elephant damage and fire) factors that were either additive or interactive in their effects. Elephant damage was the main predictor of tree mortality, but fire also played an important role depending on the landscape type. Other static variables such as position‐on‐slope, height below canopy, and altitude had weak effects in explaining tree mortality. These results indicate that keystone features such as large trees, show differential vulnerability to mortality that is landscape‐specific. For conservation managers, this implies that the dynamic drivers (elephant and fire) of tree mortality have to be managed at the specific landscape‐level. We suggest that this emergent biocomplexity in the spatial and temporal patterns of large tree mortality is not unique to the African savannas, but is likely widespread across heterogeneous landscapes.  相似文献

Aim Wood properties are related to tree physiology and mechanical stability and are influenced by both phylogeny and the environment. However, it remains unclear to what extent geographical gradients in wood traits are shaped by either phylogeny or the environment. Here we aimed to disentangle the influences of phylogeny and the environment on spatial trends in wood traits. Location China. Methods We compiled a data set of 11 wood properties for 618 tree species from 98 sampling sites in China to assess their phylogenetic and spatial patterns, and to determine how many of the spatial patterns in wood properties are attributable to the environment after correction for phylogenetic influences. Result All wood traits examined exhibited significant phylogenetic signal. The widest divergence in wood traits was observed between gymnosperms and angiosperms, Rosids and Asterids, Magnoiliids and Eudicots, and in Lamiales. For most wood traits, the majority of trait variation was observed at genus and species levels. The mechanical properties of wood showed correlated evolution with wood density. Most of the mechanical properties of wood exhibited significant latitudinal variation but limited or no altitudinal variation, and were positively correlated with mean annual precipitation based on both Pearson's correlation analysis and the phylogenetic comparative method. Correlations at family level between mean annual temperature and wood density, compression strength, cross‐section hardness, modulus of elasticity and volumetric shrinkage coefficient became significant after correction for phylogenetic influences. Main conclusions Phylogeny interacted with the environment in shaping the spatial patterns of wood traits of trees across China because most wood properties showed strong phylogenetic conservatism and thus affected environmental tolerances and distributions of tree species. Mean annual precipitation was a key environmental factor explaining the spatial patterns of wood traits. Our study provides valuable insights into the geographical patterns in productivity, distribution and ecological strategy of trees linking to wood traits.  相似文献

  • 1 This study investigates the possible influence of terrestrial landscape structure on the spatial distribution of adult Chironomidae emerging from water bodies in three agricultural areas, each with hedgerow networks, in Brittany (France).
  • 2 Using spatially explicit data from 128 yellow pan traps set in pairs at the bottom of hedges throughout the three study areas, we show that landscape structure and heterogeneity must be considered at two different spatial scales.
  • 3 At a global scale, distance to water bodies was the main factor explaining the spatial distribution of adult chironomids: both species richness and abundance changed beyond a critical distance to the stream, resulting in different species assemblages of flying insects.
  • 4 At a local scale, the abundance of species and individuals at rest in hedges changed with the quality of the hedge (mainly determined by canopy width and cover of the different vegetation layers).
  • 5 The density of the hedgerow network, and landscape openness, both influenced the dispersal of chironomid species from water bodies.
  • 6 This study, which provides the first estimate of the dispersal capabilities of chironomids in particular landscapes, suggests that the terrestrial environment is an essential component of population dynamics and community structure in aquatic Chironomidae.

This paper aims at characterizing the response of hedgerow ground flora to conversion of the surrounding fields from conventional farming to an organic farming practice. The effect of time since conversion from conventional to organic farming on the neighbouring hedgerow vegetation was examined by measuring selection on plant species and plant traits in the ground flora of 57 hedgerows adjacent to agricultural fields subject to organic or conventional management. Species richness increased significantly with time since conversion to organic farming until a maximum was reached. There were significant changes in community weighted average trait value in seven out of fifteen plant traits, and in functional diversity in two out of three groups of traits. In contrast to hypotheses, transition to organic farming generally selected for plant species that are less adapted to competing for light, whereas there were no effects on life form and lifespan. When all plant traits were analyzed together in a regression tree analysis, 31% of the variance was explained by five plant traits in the pruned tree, indicating that factors other than farming practice have a large influence on hedgerow ground flora.  相似文献

The floristic composition and structure of a premontane moist forest remnant were studied in the El Rodeo Protected Zone, Central Valley of Costa Rica. Three one-hectare plots were established in the non-disturbed forest, and all trees with a diameter at breast height (dbh) of 10 cm or greater were marked, measured and identified. The plots were located within a radius of 500 m from each other. A total of 106 tree species were recorded in the three plots. Average values: species richness 69.6 species ha-1, abundance 509 individuals ha-1, basal area 36.35 m2 ha-1. Total diversity was 3.54 (Shannon Index, H'), and the species similarity among the plots ranged between S = 0.68 and 0.70 (S?rensen Similarity Index). Most tree species are represented by few individuals (five or less). There is a lack of emergent trees and arborescent palms in the forest canopy. According to the Familial Importance Value, Moraceae, followed by Fabaceae, Lauraceae, and Sapotaceae, largely dominates this forest. Pseudolmedia oxyphillaria (Moraceae) is the dominant species (Importance Value Index), accounting for 25% of all the marked trees in the plots, followed by Clarisia racemosa (Moraceae), Heisteria concinna (Olacaceae), and Brosimum alicastrum (Moraceae). The size class distributions were similar among plots, and in general followed the expected J-inverted shape. Differences in tree abundance, floristic composition, and spatial distribution of some species among the plots suggest heterogeneity of this ecosystem's arborescent vegetation. Moreover, it is an important natural reservoir for the conservation of rare and endangered tree species in a national level. Using these results as a baseline, this study should start a long term monitoring of the structure and composition of this very reduced and fragmented ecosystem.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that soil water content would vary spatially with distance from a tree row and that the effect would differ according to tree species. A field study was conducted on a kaolinitic Oxisol in the sub-humid highlands of western Kenya to compare soil water distribution and dynamics in a maize monoculture with that under maize (Zea mays L.) intercropped with a 3-year-old tree row of Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. Ex R. Br. (grevillea) and hedgerow of Senna spectabilis DC. (senna). Soil water content was measured at weekly intervals during one cropping season using a neutron probe. Measurements were made from 20 cm to a depth of 225 cm at distances of 75, 150, 300 and 525 cm from the tree rows. The amount of water stored was greater under the sole maize crop than the agroforestry systems, especially the grevillea-maize system. Stored soil water in the grevillea-maize system increased with increasing distance from the tree row but in the senna-maize system, it decreased between 75 and 300 cm from the hedgerow. Soil water content increased least and more slowly early in the season in the grevillea-maize system, and drying was also evident as the frequency of rain declined. Soil water content at the end of the cropping season was similar to that at the start of the season in the grevillea-maize system, but about 50 and 80 mm greater in the senna-maize and sole maize systems, respectively. The seasonal water balance showed there was 140 mm of drainage from the sole maize system. A similar amount was lost from the agroforestry systems (about 160 mm in the grevillea-maize system and 145 mm in the senna-maize system) through drainage or tree uptake. The possible benefits of reduced soil evaporation and crop transpiration close to a tree row were not evident in the grevillea-maize system, but appeared to greatly compensate for water uptake losses in the senna-maize system. Grevillea, managed as a tree row, reduced stored soil water to a greater extent than senna, managed as a hedgerow.  相似文献
