Identity and biological race of a population of potato cyst nematode from Pukekohe,New Zealand

A population of potato cyst nematode recently discovered at Pukekohe, New Zealand, is identified as Heterodera pallida Stone, 1972. Diagnostic characters of the larvae—total length, width of the lip region, length of the stylet, length and width of the stylet knobs, and distance of the genital primordium from the anterior end—exclude the population from H. rostochiensis. Tested against differentially resistant clones of Solanum spp., the population appeared to be identical to biological race Dutch D.

Abstract

An Atlantic relict on the Apuan Alps: Trichomanes speciosum Willd., new to Italy.—In Versilia, at the foot of the Apuan Alps, has been found the fern Trichomanes speciosum Willd., new genus for the Italian flora and old relict witness, like Hymenophyllum tunbrigense (L.) Smith, of an Atlantic climate which still persists in deep valleys, dug on paleozoic quartz schists, on the tirrenic coast of the Apuan Alps.     

Osservazioni ecologiche preliminari su Petagnia saniculifolia Guss., raro endemismo siculo

Abstract

Preliminary ecological observations on Petagnia saniculifolia Guss., a rare sicilian endemism. — The Authors present the preliminary results of some observations on the anatomy and ecology of Petagnia saniculifolia Guss. and a synthetic phytosociological table in which some species of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Querco-Fagetea are present. The particular needs of this species and the precarious environmental conditions are pointed out.

Un nuovo ascomicete entomogeno rinvenuto in grotta: Cordyceps riverae

Abstract

A new entomogenous Ascomycete found in cave: Cordyceps riverae.—A new species of entomogenous Cordyceps, belonging to Subgenus Racemella (Ces.) Sacc., found on an adult Lepidotteron in a cave near L'Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy) is described. The characters of this species, named Cordyceps riverae, are compared with those of other similar species of Cordyceps.

Abstract

Centaurea forojuliensis, sect. Jacea DC. s. str., new entity from Friuli.—The new endemic entity Centaurea forojuliensis present in the marshes of Friuli (Northeastern Italy), is described. It is probably an ecotypical differentiation inside the polymorphic cycle of Centaurea Jacea due to the particular habitat. A taxonomic account of the whole cycle in the Southeastern Alps and Northadriatic carstic regions is also given.     

A morphological revision of the genus Herbertus S.Gray (Herbertaceae,Marchantiophyta) in Africa,including the East African islands

Abstract

The genus Herbertus S.Gray in Africa and the East African islands is revised. The division of the genus into two broad species complexes centred on H. dicranus (Tayl.ex Gottsche et al.) Trev. and H. juniperoideus (Sw.) Grolle is confirmed. H. capensis (Steph.) Sim, H. capillaris (Steph.) H. doggeltianus (Steph.) Demaret, H. lobatus (Steph.) Demaret, H. mascarenicus (Steph.) S.Arn., H. mollis (Steph.) Dusén, H. stuhlmannii (Steph.) Demaret and Schisma kilimandjarense Steph. are synonymous with H. dicranus. H. grossevittatus (Steph.) S.Arn. ex Grolle is synonymous with H. juniperoideus. Three new species are described: H. spicatus N.G.Hodgetts sp. nov., which is related to H. juniperoideus and appears close to the neotropical H. pensilis, with long, narrow leaf lobe apices and a sheathing leaf base; H. mauritianus N.G.Hodgetts sp. nov., also related to H. juniperoideus, has fewer basal slime papillae and the vitta bifurcating lower down; and H. pocsii N.G.Hodgetts sp. nov., which is related to H. dicranus but has setaceous leaf lobe apices composed of long, narrow cells. The relationships of the taxa and patterns of distribution, taking account of recent molecular work, are discussed.

THE ORIGIN OF HELIANTHUS MULTIFLORUS

Heiser , CHARLES B., Jr . (Indiana U., Bloomington), and Dale M. Smith . The origin of Helianthus multiflorus. Amer. Jour. Bot. 47(10): 860–865. Illus. 1960.—The cultivated ornamental sunflower, Helianthus multiflorus L., has been known since 1591 when it was described from Europe by Tabernaemontanus. Both Gray and Bailey concluded that it was a variety of H. decapetalus. The plant is invariably sterile and Dod was first to suggest a hybrid origin from H. annuus and H. decapetalus. Helianthus multiflorus has been found to be triploid (2n = 51) and at meiosis generally shows 17 bivalents and 17 univalents. Morphologically, the plant is similar to H. decapetalus (n = 34) but differs from it in the more hispid stem, broader leaves and phyllaries, and other characters, all of which could have been derived from H. annuus (n = 17). The artificial hybrid between H. decapetalus and H. annuus, while not readily obtained, has been secured, and the hybrid is rather similar to H. multiflorus. It is concluded that this taxon most likely originated in Europe from spontaneous hybridization between H. decapetalus and H. annuus, following the introduction of these species from North America.

Studies on the larvae of New Zealand Trichoptera

Abstract

Larvae of 46 species of caddisfly from 14 of the 15 families present in New Zealand are described. A key to the families is included, and where possible there is a key to the spccies in each family. Information on larval habits and habitats, pupation, distribution, and life cycles is given. The classification of Trichoptera is discussed with particular reference to the New Zealand fauna. The origins of the New Zealand caddisflies are discussed, and the possibilities of Indo-Malaysian, Australian, and trans-Antarctic influences are considered. The distribution of some of the species is discussed in relation to paleogeography and present-day climatic features. Description of nine new species of Heliura Butler from South America (Lepidoptera,Erebidae, Arctiinae,Arctiini, Ctenuchina)

Nine new species of the genus Heliura are described from Brazil (H. brasiliana sp. nov., H. olivocolora sp. nov., H. pulcherrima sp. nov., and H. laerteae sp. nov.), Ecuador (H. ecuadoris sp. nov.), Peru (H. flavipennis sp. nov. and H. peruana sp. nov.), and Venezuela (Heliura albiventris sp. nov. and H. juliani sp. nov.). They are illustrated in habitus and genitalia, and their phylogenetic affinities are discussed based on morphological evidence.
