Previous studies reported that aged red wine, but not novel red wine or white wine protects human red blood cells from oxidative damage induced in vitro by H(2)O(2.) Here, we demonstrate that the beneficial properties of aged red wine are due, at least in part, to the presence of anthocyanins. We firstly measured the "antioxidant power" of an Italian red wine (Taurasi, Avellino) and that of its anthocyanin fractions by using Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power Assay. Subsequently, we demonstrate that fractions containing anthocyanins lower ROS (reactive oxygen species) and methemoglobin production in human erythrocytes treated with H(2)O(2.) Finally, we reported that the protective effects of anthocyanins were also confirmed in an experimental model in which RBCs were deprived of catalase activity by treatment with 4 mM sodium azide. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that red wine anthocyanins protect human RBCs from oxidative stress.  相似文献

Over the last decade, oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of seemingly unrelated renal diseases. Epidemiological studies have documented an association of moderate wine consumption with a decreased risk of cardiovascular and neurological diseases; however, similar studies in the kidney are still lacking. The kidney is an organ highly vulnerable to damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), likely due to the abundance of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the composition of renal lipids. ROS are involved in the pathogenic mechanism of conditions such as glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. The health benefits of moderate consumption of red wine can be partly attributed to its antioxidant properties. Indeed, the kidney antioxidant defense system is enhanced after chronic exposure to moderate amounts of wine, a response arising from the combined effects of ethanol and the nonalcoholic components, mainly polyphenols. Polyphenols behave as potent ROS scavengers and metal chelators; ethanol, in turn, modulates the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, a hypothesis that red wine causes a decreased vulnerability of the kidney to the oxidative challenges could be proposed. This view is partly supported by direct evidences indicating that wine and antioxidants isolated from red wine, as well as other antioxidants, significantly attenuate or prevent the oxidative damage to the kidney. The present hypothesis paper provides a collective body of evidence suggesting a protective role of moderate wine consumption against the production and progression of renal diseases, based on the existing concepts on the pathophysiology of kidney injury mediated by oxidative stress.  相似文献

Potent inhibitory action of red wine polyphenols on human breast cancer cells   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Breast cancer (one of the most common malignancy in Western societies), as well as esophagus, stomach, lung, bladder, and prostate cancer, depend on environmental factors and diet for growth and evolution. Dietary micronutriments have been proposed as effective inhibitory agents for cancer initiation, progression, and incidence. Among them, polyphenols, present in different foods and beverages, have retained attention in recent years. Red wine is a rich source of polyphenols, and their antioxidant and tumor arresting effects have been demonstrated in different in vitro and in vivo systems. In the present study, we have measured the antiproliferative effect of red wine concentrate, its total polyphenolic pool, and purified catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and resveratrol, which account for more than 70% of the total polyphenols in red wine, on the proliferation of hormone sensitive (MCF7, T47D) and resistant (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cell lines. Our results indicate that polyphenols, at the picomolar or the nanomolar range, decrease cell proliferation in a dose- and a time-dependant manner. In hormone sensitive cell lines, a specific interaction of each polyphenol with steroid receptors was observed, with IC(50)s lower than previously described. Interaction of polyphenols with steroid receptors cannot fully explain their inhibitory effect on cell proliferation. In addition, discrete antioxidant action on each cell line was detected under the same concentrations, both by modifying the toxic effect of H(2)O(2), and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), after phorbol ester stimulation. Our results suggest that low concentrations of polyphenols, and consecutively, consumption of wine, or other polyphenol-rich foods and beverages, could have a beneficial antiproliferative effect on breast cancer cell growth.  相似文献

This study evaluated the antioxidant defense system of the rat kidney following chronic exposure to red wine rich in flavonols. Both ethanol and antioxidant non-alcoholic wine components, mainly polyphenols, could contribute to the antioxidant status of kidney. Adult rats were given separately, water, ethanol (12.5%), red wine or alcohol-free red wine. After ten weeks of treatment, blood samples were obtained to determine plasma antioxidant capacity (FRAP, ferric reducing ability of plasma), uric acid and ethanol levels. Kidney tissues (cortex and papilla) were separated to perform measurements of reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) and the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). The activity of (Na + K)-ATPase, a membrane-bound enzyme, was also assessed. Red wine in plasma, elevated the FRAP without changing the concentration of uric acid; in kidney, it diminished the MDA production and elevated the GSH/GSSG ratio and the activity of CAT and GSH-Px. The activity of SOD did not change. Despite the finding that renal (Na + K)-ATPase activity was upregulated by ethanol, it was not altered by either red wine or alcohol-free red wine. The effects on the antioxidant enzymes could be attributed to ethanol, but the increase in the FRAP and GSH/GSSG ratio is attributed to the non-alcoholic components of red wine. These data suggest that there is an enhancement of the antioxidant defense potential in kidney and plasma, after chronic red wine consumption. Both ethanol and the non-alcoholic antioxidant constituents of red wine could be responsible for these effects.  相似文献

The Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is claimed to have beneficial properties for human health, such as anti-bacterial, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The antioxidant effects of the mushroom may be partly explained by protection of cell components against free radicals. We evaluated the effect of aqueous Chaga mushroom extracts for their potential for protecting against oxidative damage to DNA in human lymphocytes. Cells were pretreated with various concentrations (10, 50, 100 and 500 microg/mL) of the extract for 1 h at 37 degrees C. Cells were then treated with 100 microM of H2O2 for 5 min as an oxidative stress. Evaluation of oxidative damage was performed using single-cell gel electrophoresis for DNA fragmentation (Comet assay). Using image analysis, the degree of DNA damage was evaluated as the DNA tail moment. Cells pretreated with Chaga extract showed over 40% reduction in DNA fragmentation compared with the positive control (100 micromol H2O2 treatment). Thus, Chaga mushroom treatment affords cellular protection against endogenous DNA damage produced by H2O2.  相似文献

The protective effect of hydroxycinnamic acids, i.e. caffeic acid (CA) and sinapic acid (SA) present in wine, and chlorogenic acid (CHA) present in apple, compared to a red wine phenolic extract (RWPE) was investigated in hamsters fed an atherogenic diet for 12 weeks. Five groups of 8 hamsters fed such a diet received by force-feeding RWPE, CA or SA in water, mimicking a moderate consumption of alcohol-free red wine. Controls received water and CHA force-feeding was extrapolated from apple consumption. Plasma cholesterol concentration was lower in group that received RWPE (-22%) and hydroxycinnamic acids had no effect. Plasma apolipoprotein Apo-A1 concentration was not affected; consumption of RWPE only decreased Apo-B concentration (-46%). Liver superoxide dismutase activity was 33% lower and glutathione peroxidase activity was 67% greater in the group receiving RWPE compared to controls; there was no effect when CA, SA or CHA were given. All the phenolic compounds significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity (about 28% on average) compared with controls. Aortic fatty streak area was significantly reduced in the group receiving RWPE (-30%) in comparison with controls and hydroxycinnamic acids. Our findings demonstrate that chronic ingestion of the nonalcoholic components of red wine, mainly polyphenols, prevent the development of atherosclerosis in hamster and that wine hydroxycinnamic acids are not the phenolic compounds involved in such a beneficial effect.  相似文献

Following oxidative stress, modifications of several biologically important macromolecules have been demonstrated. In this study we investigated the effect of a natural extract from Mangifera indica L (Vimang), its main ingredient mangiferin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on energy metabolism, energy state and malondialdehyde (MDA) production in a red blood cell system. Analysis of MDA, high energy phosphates and ascorbate was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Under the experimental conditions, concentrations of MDA and ATP catabolites were affected in a dose-dependent way by H2O2. Incubation with Vimang (0.1, 1, 10, 50 and 100 microg/mL), mangiferin (1, 10, 100 microg/mL) and EGCG (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 microM) significantly enhances erythrocyte resistance to H2O2-induced reactive oxygen species production. In particular, we demonstrate the protective activity of these compounds on ATP, GTP and total nucleotides (NT) depletion after H2O2-induced damage and a reduction of NAD and ADP, which both increase because of the energy consumption following H2O2 addition. Energy charge potential, decreased in H2O2-treated erythrocytes, was also restored in a dose-dependent way by these substances. Their protective effects might be related to the strong free radical scavenging ability described for polyphenols.  相似文献

Hydroxytyrosol, the major representative phenolic compound of virgin olive oil, is a dietary component. Its possible protective effect on hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-induced oxidative alterations was investigated in human erythrocytes. Cells were pretreated with micromolar hydroxytyrosol concentrations and then exposed to H(2)O(2) over different time intervals. Subsequently, erythrocytes were analyzed for oxidative hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Our data demonstrate that hydroxytyrosol prevents both oxidative alterations, therefore, providing protection against peroxide-induced cytotoxicity in erythrocytes. The effect of oxidative stress on erythrocyte membrane transport systems, as well as the protective role of hydroxytyrosol, also were investigated in conditions of nonhemolytic mild H(2)O(2) treatment. Under these experimental conditions, a marked decrease in the energy-dependent methionine and leucine transport is observable; this alteration is quantitatively prevented by hydroxytyrosol pretreatment. On the other hand, the energy-independent glucose transport is not affected by the oxidative treatment. The reported data give new experimental support to the hypothesis of a protective role played by nonvitamin antioxidant components of virgin olive oil on oxidative stress in human systems.  相似文献

The antioxidant effects of dipyridamol (DIP), a coronary vasodilator, and its derivative RA-25 were compared in intact red blood cells (RBC) and in isolated ghost membranes. Both compounds are quite effective antioxidants in cumene hydroperoxide-induced lipid peroxidation of RBC, showing a much smaller effect for hydrogen peroxide oxidation. The antioxidant effect of DIP was considerably higher than that of RA25. For isolated ghost membranes, the apparent IC50 (the drug concentration that produces 50% inhibition of lipid peroxidation) in cumene hydroperoxide-induced peroxidation was 25 microM, while the maximum protective effect of RA-25 was around 30% in the drug concentration range of 50-100 microM. The drugs can protect the oxidative hemolysis induced by cumene hydroperoxide with a lower effect when the hemolysis is induced by H2O2. The significant antioxidant effect against damages induced by cumene hydroperoxide suggests that DIP, due to its lipophilic character, can interact with RBC membranes, and the protective effect is associated with the binding of the drug to the membrane. On the other hand, RA-25 is more hydrophilic than DIP, binds to the membrane to a smaller extent, and, for this reason, has a lower antioxidant effect.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that moderate consumption of red wine containing high amount of polyphenols and anthocyanins is associated with decreased incidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Therefore, we hypothesized that cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis as well as Akt (protein kinase B, PKB) and protein kinase C (PKC) cascades can be beneficially influenced by an alcohol-free red wine (AFRW) extract rich in 14 types of polyphenols and 4 types of anthocyanins during cardiac remodeling. To test this assumption, rats were treated with isoproterenol (ISO) to induce postinfarction remodeling and were given tap water or AFRW ad libitum for 8 weeks. Control rats received vehicle instead of ISO. Heart mass/body mass and ventricle mass/body mass ratios, diameter of cardiomyocytes, phosphorylation of PKC alpha/beta II and protein kinase B/Akt, and deposition of collagen type III were determined from the hearts of all four groups of rats. All measured gravimetric parameters, myocyte diameters and the amount of collagen type III decreased, and the phosphorylation of PKC alpha/beta II was reduced in the ISO+AFRW group compared to the ISO group. AFRW induced activation of Akt, one of the best characterized cytoprotective pathways even without ISO treatment, and this activation was further increased in the ISO+AFRW group. These data suggest that AFRW treatment has a protective effect on hearts undergoing postinfarction remodeling by repressing hypertrophy-associated increased phosphorylation of PKC alpha/beta II and by activating Akt, providing a molecular mechanism for the cardioprotective effect of red wine polyphenols.  相似文献

Moderate consumption of red wine is associated with a decreased risk for coronary heart disease. Apart from alcohol, an additive role for wine polyphenols has been suggested. However, the real contribution of these compounds can only be studied when available without the alcohol component. The objective of the study was to prepare a wine polyphenol concentrate not containing alcohol and to compare the quantitative and qualitative properties of this concentrate with those of the original wine from which the concentrate is made. This polyphenol concentrate, called piraltin, was made out of red wine by a freeze-drying technique. Both piraltin and the original red wine were analyzed quantitatively for the main polyphenols present: gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin and quercetin. The qualitative comparison comprised the inhibitory effect of the two products on LDL oxidation in vitro. In the process of freeze-drying recovery of the four determined flavonoids of red wine is fairly constant (average 68 +/- 7%). In a copper induced LDL oxidation assay both red wine and piraltin prolonged lag-times over 300% compared to controls without a significant difference between the two products. The freeze-dried polyphenol concentrate piraltin contains about 70% of the total polyphenol content of the original wine. This preparation technique does not cause a loss of antioxidative properties of the phenols. Piraltin creates the possibility to study the effects of wine polyphenols separately without the influence of alcohol both in vitro and in vivo.  相似文献

Recent evidence shows that plant polyphenols exhibit antioxidant and radical scavenging properties. By three separate and complementary methods--DPPH assay, beta-carotene-linoleic acid assay and NBT-reduction assay it was established that a polyphenol-rich extract from the medicinal plant Geranium sanguineum L. with strong anti-influenza virus activity, possessed antioxidant and radical scavenging capacities. For comparative reasons caffeic acid and the synthetic antioxidant BHT were used. Total soluble phenolic constituents of the MeOH extract measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent were found as 34.60% (w/w). Further it was demonstrated that the EtOAc fraction, retaining the majority of the in vivo protective effect exhibited a strong O2-scavenging activity while the n-BuOH fraction, containing the majority of the in vitro antiviral activity provoked generation of O2-. The O2- scavenging activity of all three preparations correlated with the rate of the protective effect shown in the murine model of experimental influenza virus infection. The present results are in accordance with our intensive studies on the mode of the protective effect of the plant extract which showed positively that the protection may possibly be attributed to the combination of more than one biological activities and that the use of antioxidants might be an useful approach in the treatment of influenza infection.  相似文献

Resveratrol, one of polyphenols derived from red wine, has been shown to protect against cell death, possibly through the association with several signaling pathways. Currently numerous studies indicate that cardiovascular diseases are linked to the release of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) often generated in states such as ischemia/reperfusion injury. In the present study, we investigated whether resveratrol has the capability to control intracellular survival signaling cascades involving AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) in the inhibitory process of cardiac injury. We hypothesized that resveratrol may exert a protective effect on damage to heart muscle through modulating of the AMPK signaling pathway. We mimicked ischemic conditions by inducing cell death with H(2)O(2) in H9c2 muscle cells. In this experiment, resveratrol induced strong activation of AMPK and inhibited the occurrence of cell death caused by treatment with H(2)O(2). Under the same conditions, inhibition of AMPK using dominant negative AMPK constructs dramatically abolished the effect of resveratrol on cell survival in H(2)O(2)-treated cardiac muscle cells. These results indicate that resveratrol-induced cell survival is mediated by AMPK in H9c2 cells and may exert a novel therapeutic effect on oxidative stress induced in cardiac disorders.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is seen in various metabolic disorders for unknown reasons. Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant status in favor of the former. This study investigated whether oxidative stress exists in phenylketonuria (PKU) using the BTBR-Pah(enu2) animal model for PKU. Animals (14-24 weeks old) were sacrificed and brain and red blood cells (RBCs) were obtained aseptically. The lipid peroxidation by-product, evaluated as malondialdehyde (MDA), was significantly higher in the brains and RBCs of PKU animals (n = 6) than in controls (n = 6). Glutathione/glutathione disulfide, a good indicator for tissue thiol status, was significantly decreased both in the brains and RBCs. Some antioxidant enzymes were also analyzed in RBCs, including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), which provides the RBC's main reducing power, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), and catalase detoxifies H2O2 by catalyzing its reduction to O2 and H2O. Both catalase and G6PD were significantly increased in the RBCs of PKU animals.  相似文献

Opioid peptides have been recognized as modulators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mouse macrophages and human neutrophils. Since the effect cannot be ascribed to its direct scavenger properties, in this study, we tested the hypothesis that methionine-enkephalin (MENK) modulates ROS by alteration of antioxidant enzyme activity (AOE). For this purpose superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) are measured in red blood cells of 1, 4, 10, and 18-month-old CBA mice of both sexes injected with 10 mg/kg MENK. The results indicate that MENK-affected antioxidant enzyme activity of red blood cells is age- but not sex-related. The most abundant effects were observed at the reproductive stage. Increased sensitivity to oxidative stress by opioid peptides was in both sexes mainly due to increased SOD activity followed by GPX decrease. Thus, the damage ascribed to opioid peptides might be, at least partly, ascribed to deleterious effects of accumulated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).  相似文献

To explore the contribution of red blood cell (RBC) deformability and interaction with endothelial cells (ECs) to circulatory disorders, these RBC properties were modified by treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), and their effects on vascular resistance were monitored following their infusion into rat mesocecum vasculature. Treatment with 0.5 mM H(2)O(2) increased RBC/EC adherence without significant alteration of RBC deformability. At 5.0 mM H(2)O(2), RBC deformability was considerably reduced, inducing a threefold increase in the number of undeformable cells, whereas RBC/EC adherence was not further affected by the increased H(2)O(2) concentration. This enabled the selective manipulation of RBC adherence and deformability and the testing of their differential effect on vascular resistance. Perfusion of RBCs with enhanced adherence and unchanged deformability (treatment with 0.5 mM H(2)O(2)) increased vascular resistance by about 35% compared with untreated control RBCs. Perfusion of 5.0 mM H(2)O(2)-treated RBCs, with reduced deformability (without additional increase of adherence), further increased vascular resistance by about 60% compared with untreated control RBCs. These results demonstrate the specific effects of elevated adherence and reduced deformability of oxidized RBCs on vascular resistance. These effects can be additive, depending on the oxidation conditions. The oxidation-induced changes applied in this study are moderate compared with those observed in RBCs in pathological states. Yet, they caused a considerable increase in vascular resistance, thus demonstrating the potency of RBC/EC adherence and RBC deformability in determining resistance to blood flow in vivo.  相似文献

Red wine and its components have been shown to possess cardioprotective and anti-atherogenic effects. Additionally, red wine and many of its components like catechin, epicatechin, rutin, transresveratrol and quercetin possess antioxidant properties. Oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) is involved in the development of an atherosclerotic lesion. Red wine, therefore, may be anti-atherogenic because of its antioxidant effects on LDL modification. This study examined the antioxidant effects of catechin, epicatechin, rutin, transresveratrol, quercetin and Merlot wines on LDL oxidation. Merlot was chosen because although other red wines have been tested, limited information exists for this variety. Oxidation was carried out with AAPH (2,2-Azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride) and AMVN (2,2-Azo-bis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile)), as water and lipid soluble peroxyl radical generating systems (FRGS), respectively. This allowed us to determine the lipophilic antioxidant characteristics of the wine and its components. Conjugated diene assays were used to measure LDL oxidation over 6 hrs. In an AAPH system, all polyphenolic compounds except transresveratrol displayed an antioxidant effect. LDL oxidation by AAPH was also inhibited by aliquots of Merlot wine. No antioxidant effects were observed in an AMVN environment except for a mild antioxidant effect by quercetin. Surprisingly, incubation of LDL with Merlot wine strongly protected against oxidation by AMVN. In summary, the five phenolic compounds displayed antioxidant effects in a water soluble free radical generating system, but only quercetin showed this in a lipid soluble one. However, red wine inhibited LDL oxidation by both water and lipid soluble free radical generating systems. Our data suggest, therefore, that red wines contain unidentified antioxidants that provide protection against LDL oxidation within a lipid soluble environment. To provide further understanding of how oxidative damage affects red cell membrane function, the effects of low levels of two different types of oxidants on selected red cell properties have been studied. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an example of a water soluble oxidant, and t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), a hydrophobic hydroperoxide, were compared with respect to their effects on membrane permeability, membrane mechanical properties and binding of autologous serum antibodies to the cell surface. Whereas H2O2 treatment resulted in a dose-dependent increase in membrane permeability to potassium that was evident after one hour of oxidant exposure, cells treated with tBHP at doses up to 5 mumol/ml cells showed no immediate change in cation permeability. H2O2 also caused a marked decrease in membrane deformability, whereas tBHP-treated cells showed minimal loss of deformability. However, tBHP treatment did result in a dose-dependent increase in the susceptibility of the membrane to fragmentation under high shear stress. With exclusion of treated samples that bound excess rabbit anti-spectrin antibody, indicating exposure of intracellular components, neither agent promoted the binding of autologous serum antibody in amounts comparable to that found in vivo on high density or some pathologic red cells. Taken together, the results suggest that tBHP and H2O2 cause damage to human red cells by distinct oxidative mechanisms which do not lead directly to substantive generation of binding sites for autologous serum antibodies.  相似文献

Antioxidant effects of green tea and its polyphenols on bladder cells   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Genitourinary tract inflammation/ailments affect the quality of life and health of a large segment of society. In recent years, studies have demonstrated strong antioxidant effects of green tea and its associated polyphenols in inflammatory states. This in vitro study examined the antioxidant capabilities (and putative mechanisms of action) of green tea extract (GTE), polyphenon-60 (PP-60, 60% pure polyphenols), (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in normal/malignant human bladder cells following catechin treatment+/-1 mM H2O2 (oxidative agent). Cell viability, apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation were evaluated. Our results showed that H2O2 exposure significantly reduced normal (UROtsa) and high-grade (TCCSUP, T24) bladder cancer (BlCa) cell viability compared with control-treated cells (p<0.001). No affect on low-grade RT4 and SW780 BlCa cell viability was observed with exposure to H2O2. Compared to H2O2-treated UROtsa, treatment with PP-60, ECG and EGCG in the presence of H2O2 significantly improved UROtsa viability (p<0.01), with strongest effects evoked by ECG. Additionally, though not as effective as in UROtsa cells, viability of both high-grade TCCSUP and T24 BlCa cells, in comparison to H2O2-treated cells, was significantly improved (p<0.01) by treatment with PP-60, ECG, and EGCG in the presence of H2O2. Overall, our findings demonstrate that urothelium cell death via H2O2-induced oxidative stress is mediated, in part, through superoxide (O2-.;), and potentially, direct H2O2 mechanisms, suggesting that green tea polyphenols can protect against oxidative stress/damage and bladder cell death.  相似文献

Consumption of red wine has been associated with health promotion and disease prevention. We have previously found that the intestine of zinc-deficient (ZD) rats develop oxidative damage associated with inflammation. Here we have used this model to investigate whether red wine polyphenols could protect against intestinal injury and, if so, whether this protection was achieved through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The intestinal alterations induced by zinc deficiency such as morphological damage, increased TBA-RS level and CuZn-superoxide dismutase activity, and decreased glutathione peroxidase activity, did not develop with the administration to ZD rats of a suspension of dealcoholated red wine (RWS). The same treatment induced in control rats a decrease of TBA-RS level but also of glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity. Treatment with RWS to ZD rats prevented a marked mucosal macrophage and neutrophil infiltration. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (CINC), was induced by zinc deficiency, whereas that of the anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 was suppressed. Treatment with RWS reduced CINC expression. These results report a novel activity of red wine polyphenols in downregulation of intestinal CINC expression, which likely protects cells against inflammatory processes.  相似文献
