An 11-space code for bacterial names

Citation of names of bacteria in records intended for storage and retrieval of information in computer files presents serious problems because of the variable lengths of the generic name and specific epithets. In this paper an eleven space alpha-numeric code is proposed for each valid species and subspecies, based on internationally approved documents, for use in computer filing.

Resumen Las citas de nombres de bacterias en informaciones que han de ser almacenadas y utilizadas a través de un ordenador presentan serios problemas debido a la variación en longitud de su nombre genérico y al uso de espítetos específicos. Este trabajo propone la utilización de un código alfa-numérico de once espacios para cada especie y subespecie válida basado en regalamentaciones y documentos approbados internacionalmente que facilitaría la utilización de sistemas electrónicos de ficheros.

Résumé La dénomination des bactéries pour conservation et récupération de l'information dans un ordinateur pose, à cause de la longueur variable du nom générique et des épithètes spécifiques, de sérieux problèmes. Dans cet article, il est proposé pour chaque espèce et sous-espèce valide un code alpha-numérique de onze espacements, basé sur des documents internationalement approuvés.

     

An improved method for mass rearing Paratheresia claripalpis for biological control of lepidopteran stalk borers

An improved method for mass rearing Paratheresia claripalpis Van der Wulp (Diptera: Tachinidae), for biological control of lepidopteran stalk borers is described and compared to the commonly used method. The improved method was found to be superior by being less labour intensive and by producing 2.25 times more parasites from the same number of hosts.

Amélioration de la technique d'élevage de masse de Paratheresia claripalpis pour la lutte biologique contre Diatraea saccharalis

Résumé Une technique d'élevage de massa de la tachinaire, P. claripalpis Van der Wulp, est décrite et comparée à la technique classique. Cette technique correspond à une amélioration puisqu'elle demande moins de travail et produit 2.25 fois plus de parasites pour le même nombre d'hôtes.

     

A portable suction sampler for rock epibiota

Summary 1. A fully portable suction sampler which can be operated by one diver is described.2. Rock epibiota is removed by a scraper tube which leads, through a collecting chamber, to an air-lift suction chamber and tube. The sample is held in a net bag before reaching the suction chamber. Air is supplied by a cylinder incorporated into the unit.3. The sampler removes all epilithic biota except for the parts of encrusting species cemented to the rock.4. The sampler can also be used for sand fauna.

Ein tragbarer Saugsammler für epibiotisch auf Felsen lebende Organismen

Kurzfassung Eine Saugpumpe für bestandskundliche Untersuchungen, die von einem Taucher getragen und bedient werden kann, wird beschrieben. Sie besteht aus einer Sammelkammer, in die zwischen dem Schabrohr und der Luftsaugkammer ein Sammelnetz eingefügt wird. Die Saugkammer ist durch ein Reduktionsventil mit einem Preßluftzylinder verbunden. Mit Hilfe dieses Sammelgeräts lassen sich fast alle Organismen von Felsoberflächen entfernen. Es kann überdies auch zur quantitativen Erfassung der Fauna auf Sandböden eingesetzt werden. Vor- und Nachteile dieses Gerätes werden diskutiert.

     

Genetically-induced susceptibility to malathion in Tribolium castaneum despite selection for resistance

Immigration of malathion-susceptible males into resistant populations of Tribolium castaneum considerably increased mortality despite selection for resistance every generation. It is suggested that this method may prevent the appearance of resistance with continuous use of chemicals. Its use with warehouse populations of stored-products insects seems to be feasible.

Zusammenfassung Die Einwanderung von Malathion-sensiblen Männchen in resistenten Populationen von Tribolium castaneum erhöhte die Mortalität beträchtlich, trotzdem eine Selektion auf Resistenz in jeder Generation erfolgte. Es wird vermutet, dass diese Methode das Auftreten von Resistenz bei dauernder Insektizidanwendung verhindern könnte. Die Anwendung in Lagerhauspopulationen von Vorratsschädlingen erscheint möglich.

     

A rapid spectrophotometric method for the determination of bromine in seawater and in the ash of marine algae

Summary 1. A simple spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of bromine in organic material in the presence of other halogens.2. The absorbance at 400 nm in chloroform is proportional to the bromine concentration between 0 and 0.6 g/l, although standards should be run with each set of determinations.3. The results of a number of bromine determinations on seawater and the ash of several marine Rhodophyta are presented and discussed.

Eine spektrophotometrische Schnellmethode zur Bestimmung von Brom in Meerwasser und in der Asche mariner Algen

Kurzfassung Zur quantitativen Bestimmung von Brom in organischen Substanzen bei Anwesenheit anderer Halogene wird eine einfache spektrophotometrische Methode beschrieben. Bei 400 nm ist die Absorption in Chloroform der Bromkonzentration im Bereich zwischen 0 und 0,6 g/l proportional. Als Beispiele werden Bestimmungen des Br-Gehalts in Seewasser und in der Asche verschiedener mariner Rhodophyceen mitgeteilt.

Summary Albumin, haptoglobin, Gc and transferrin phenotype frequencies for 251 related Pushtoons from Afghanistan are presented. Two new albumin variants, albumins Afghanistan and Pushtoon, have been identified.

A simple airlift-operated tank for closed-system culture of decapod crustacean larvae and other small aquatic animals

Summary 1. A rectangular tank for culture of decapod crustacean larvae with continuous water recirculation is described. The tank has a sloped bottom and an attached gravel filter unit. Water circulation through the filter serves at the same time for maintaining food particles in suspension and for dispersing the larvae; it is accomplished by airlift pumps.2. Tanks of this design have been used successfully for closed system culture of larvae of the prawnMacrobrachium rosenbergii and are expected to be satisfactory for other small aquatic animals.

Ein einfaches mit Luft betriebenes Zuchtgefäß als in sich geschlossenes Kultursystem für Decapodenlarven und andere kleine aquatische Tiere

Kurzfassung Ein Kultursystem wird beschrieben, das zur Zucht von Decapodenlarven und anderen kleineren Wassertieren geeignet ist. Es besteht aus einem rechteckigen Zuchtgefäß mit schräg abfallendem Boden, an dessen seichtem Ende Wasser einströmt, so daß eine abwärtsgerichtete Bodenströmung entsteht. An dem tiefen Ende des Zuchtbeckens wird durch eingeleitete Luft das Bodenwasser nach oben transportiert, wobei an der Oberfläche ein Gegenstrom erzeugt wird. Das Wasser zirkuliert kontinuierlich durch ein Kiesfilter, das von dem eigentlichen Zuchtgefäß abgegrenzt ist. Nahrungspartikel und Planktonorganismen werden durch den hierbei erzeugten Wasserumlauf in Suspension gehalten. Die Larven des DecapodenMacrobrachium rosenbergii konnten mit Hilfe dieses Kultursystems erfolgreich aufgezogen werden.

     

Criteria for age determination in the Spotless Starling(Sturnus unicolor): cranial pneumatization and tarsal colour

Summary Tarsal coloration inSturnus unicolor becomes progressively lighter with age and is of certain value in ageing adult birds (3Y–4Y). The process of cranial pneumatization lasts about six months from July to December for first clutch birds and from August to January for those of second broads. According to the degree of frontal pneumatization, October and November are the most effective months for the discrimination between adult and juvenile individuals.

Altersbestimmung beim Einfarbstar(Sturnus unicolor): Pneumatisation des Schädeldachs und Lauffärbung

Zusammenfassung Beim Einfarbstar wird die Lauffärbung mit zunehmendem Alter heller und kann als Hilfe bei der ungefähren Altersgruppierung adulter Vögel verwendet werden. Die Pneumatisation des Schädeldachs dauert etwa 6 Monate (Juli bis Dezember bei Jungen aus Erstbruten, August bis Januar bei Jungen aus Zweitbruten). Nach dem Stand der Pneumatisation des Schädeldachs lassen sich juv. und ad. am besten im Oktober und November unterscheiden.

     

A new method for making permanent phytoplankton mounts

Summary A simple method of mounting phytoplankton which allows for quantitative enumeration while at the same time providing a permanent record of the subsample is described. Tests for randomness were found to be significant indicating a homogeneous distribution of phytoplankton in these mounts. The advantages and disadvantages of the new method are discussed.

Zufallsproben (random samples) erwiesen sich als stichhaltig und zeigten eine homogene Verteilung von Phytoplankton auf den Objektträgern an. Die Vorteile und Nachteile der neuen Methode werden erläutert.

     

A process for leaching citric acid from apple pomace fermented withAspergillus niger in solid-state culture

Summary A multiple contact countercurrent process was developed for leaching citric acid from apple pomace fermented withAspergillus niger in solid-state culture. Acetone was found to be the most efficient among the different solvents examined as it yielded the greatest amount of citric acid in the leachate and gave an extraction efficiency of 90%.

Conjugative plasmid coding for the metabolism of 2-chlorobenzoic acid byPseudomonas aeruginosa

Summary A 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2-CBA) utilizing strain ofPseudomonas aeruginosa (B₁₆) has been isolated from soil by enrichment with 2-CBA. The trait for utilization of 2-CBA as sole source of carbon and energy was lost spontaneously and by treatment with growth-limiting concentration of mitomycin C. Genes coding for 2-CBA catabolism are transferrable to 2-CBA^– variants through conjugation.

Résumé Une souche dePseudomonas aeruginosa (B₁₆) utilisant l'acide 2-chlorobenzoïque (2-CBA) a été isolée du sol par enrichissement sur le 2-CBA. L'aptitude à utiliser le 2-CBA comme seule source de carbone et d'énergie a été perdue spontanément et par traitement avec une concentration limitant la croissance de mitomycine-C. Plant use knowledge of the Winikina Warao: The case for questionnaires in Ethnobotany

A questionnaire was used to measure plant use knowledge for 18 plants from 40 randomly selected Winikina Warao respondents of two villages in the Orinoco River Delta, Venezuela. Five use values are presented: reported use (RU) value for each plant and plant part; plant part value (PPV); specific use (SU) value; intraspecific use value (IUV); and overall use value (OUV). The overall use value can be used to target plants of potential interest to researchers. Although certain precautions must be taken when undertaking this type of study, questionnaires are important tools that can be used to assess the dynamic interplay between people and the plants they use.

Conocimiento del uso de plantas de los winikina warao: el caso de cuestionarios en etnobotánica

Resumen  Un cuestionario fue utilizado para medir el conocimiento de 18 plantas usadas por los Winikina Waroa del delta del rio Orinoco, Venezuela. Cinco valores de uso son presentados: valor de uso reportado (RU) para cada planta y parte de planta; valor de la parte de planta (PPV); valor de uso especifico (SU); y valor de uso total (OUV). El valor de uso total se puede utilizar para escoger plants de interés a investigadores. Aunque es necesario tomar ciertas precauciones para emprender un estudo de este tipo, cuestionarios son herramientas que se pueden utilizar para asesar la interacción dinmica que existe entre la gente y su uso de plantas.

Pre-translational control of the differentiated state: Test for free cytoplasmic Hb-Messenger ribonucleoprotein in chick erythroblasts and chick embryo brain

Summary Non-ribosome-bound 9S RNA was prepared from cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein of erythropoietic and non-erythropoietic tissues. The RNA was assayed for Hb-mRNA content in a cell-free protein synthesizing system. Free Hb-mRNA was found in the cytoplasm of chick erythroblasts but not in chick embryo brain cytoplasm.

Zusammenfassung 9S RNS wurde aus cytoplasmischen Ribonucleoprotein-Partikeln von Hühnchen-Erythroblasten sowie Hühnerembryo-Gehirn isoliert. Die RNS wurde auf ihren Gehalt an Hb-Messenger-RNS in einem zellfreien System getestet. Freie Hb-Messenger-RNS wurde nur im Cytoplasma von Erythroblasten gefunden.
