The costs of adaptation respiration, the contribution of different biochemical pathways of respiration and alternative oxidases to the adaptation to mineral deficiency were compared in plant species representing different types of adaptive strategies: ruderal (Ru) (Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Leonurus quinquelobatus Gilib.) and predominantly stress-tolerant type (St) (Dactylis glomerata L. and Medicago sativa L.). The adaptation component of the total dark respiration was calculated on the basis of the relative growth rate and the ratio of dark respiration to gross photosynthesis. Adaptation costs were greater in less tolerant species. The inhibitory analysis showed that the contribution of glycolytic pathway decreased and the proportion of oxidative pentose phosphate pathway and residual respiration increased in the intolerant Ru-species under the conditions of abiotic stress. Conversely, in the tolerant St-species, the contribution of glycolysis increased. In all species studied, the contribution of the cytochrome pathway of substrate oxidation was reduced and the contribution of the alternative cyanide-insensitive and residual respiration increased under conditions of mineral deficiency; this phenomenon was particularly pronounced in a less tolerant species L. quinquelobatus. In the species characterized by Ru-strategy, stress increased the content of phenolic compounds and shikimic acid. We suppose that the adaptation respiration costs are associated with alternative biochemical pathways and alternative cyanide-resistant oxidase. The role of these pathways in the plants with St-strategy consists in maintaining the active state of oxidative pathways, whereas in the plants with Ru-strategy, they serve to burn excess metabolites and enhance the synthesis of secondary metabolites, which perform protective functions.  相似文献

The effects of insufficient and excessive mineral nutrition on the relative growth rate (RGR); the rate of total dark respiration (R); gross photosynthesis (Pg); and the contents of endogenous IAA, ABA, and cytokinins (CK) were studied in 20–60-day-old seedlings of plant species that differed in their responses to these factors: beet root (Amaranthus retroflexusL.), orchard-grass (Dactylis glomerataL.), and common wheat (Triticum aestivumL.). The changes in the level of mineral nutrition lowered the RGR and Pgvalues and the IAA/ABA and CK/ABA ratios and increased the Rand R/Pgvalues and ABA content, especially in A. retroflexusand T. aestivum. The authors propose a new way to assess the respiratory cost of adaptation to stress based on the relation between the RGR and the R/Pgvalues. The adaptation component of Ris shown to relate to the ABA content.  相似文献

We measured the content of hormones, the rate of growth, and some parameters of water regime (water content, transpiration, and stomatal and hydraulic conductivities) one and two days after wheat plant transfer from 10 to 1% Hoagland-Arnon nutrient medium. It was shown that, a day after dilution of nutrient solution, the content of various cytokinin forms decreased in the xylem sap, shoots, and roots. This decrease was most pronounced in the case of zeatin in the xylem sap and zeatin riboside in the mature zone of the first leaf. ABA was found to accumulate in shoots. A day after dilution of nutrient solution, we observed root elongation evidently induced by mineral nutrient deficiency, and this accelerated root growth was maintained later. Two days after dilution of nutrient solution, we observed the slowing of shoot weight accumulation, whereas root weight remained unchanged. Plant growth response could be related to ABA accumulation in shoots and cytokinin depletion in the whole plant. A reduced hydraulic conductivity and water content in the growing leaf zone was detected only two days after dilution of nutrient solution. Thus, changes in the growth rates and hormone contents could not result from disturbances in water regime induced by mineral nutrient deficiency.  相似文献

Abstract: The relation between plant growth rate and respiration rate is readily derived from the overall chemical reaction for aerobic metabolism. The derived relation can be used to show that separation of respiration into growth (g) and maintenance (m) components is not a useful concept. g and m cannot be unambiguously measured or defined in terms of biochemical processes. Moreover, because growth yield calculations from biochemical pathway analysis, from biomass molecular composition, from biomass heat of combustion, and from biomass elemental composition have not included all of the energy costs for biosynthesis, they are not accurate measures of the carbon cost for plant growth. Improper definitions of growth-respiration relations are impeding the use of physiological properties for prediction of plant growth as a function of environmental variables.  相似文献

Plantago lanceolata L., a grassland species from a relatively nutrient-poor habitat, was grown in nutrient-rich and in nutrient-poor culture solutions. Half of the plants were trensferred from high to low or from low to high nutrient conditions. Shoot growth was immediately reduced upon transfer to low nutrient conditions, whilst it reacted more slowly upon transfer of plants to high nutrient conditions. Root growth was less dependent on the supply of nutrients, but it was slightly reduced upon transfer of plants to high nutrient conditions.
Photosynthesis was largely independent of the nutrient supply, apart from an initial increase upon transfer of plants to low nutrient conditions. Photosynthesis decreased with age in all treatments, and this decrease was not due to mutual shading. The decrease of photosynthetic rate was not accompanied by a decreased relative growth rate: it was compensated by a more efficient root respiration, since the activity of the alternative nonphosphorylating pathway continuously decreased in plants grown in a high nutrient environment.
It is concluded that the alternative pathway was of significance in removal of carbohydrates, which could not be utilized for growth, energy production, etc. , due to a temporary or structural imbalance between assimilate production and requirement. The alternative pathway also appeared to allow P. lanceolata plants to adapt to a changed environment as regards mineral nutrition.
The experimental value for root growth respiration of P. lanceolata grown under high nutrient conditions was compared with a theoretical value, calculated from the biochemical composition of plant dry matter and the known energy costings for biosynthetic and transport processes. A good correlation between the experimental and theoretical value of root growth respiration was found if it was assumed that ion uptake required c . 1.0 molecule of ATP per ion per membrane passage.  相似文献

The effect of composition of the medium and pH on the growth of Pediastrum duplex Meyen and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum Wood was studied. Both species showed preference to alkaline conditions. The ammonium nitrate grown colonies of D. pulchellum lacked mucilage and showed a more compact form, resembling D. pulchellum var. minitum Deflandre. From this it appears that D. pulchellum var. minitum is a nutritional variant of the species and not a stable variety.  相似文献

Effects of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) infection and P on root respiration and dry matter allocation were studied in Plantago major L. ssp. pleiosperma (Pilger). By applying P, the relative growth rate of non-VAM controls and plants colonized by Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxt. sensu Gerdemann) Gerdemann and Trappe was increased to a similar extent (55-67%). However, leaf area ratio was increased more and net assimilation rate per unit leaf area was increased less by VAM infection than by P addition. The lower net assimilation rate could be related to a 20 to 30% higher root respiration rate per unit leaf area of VAM plants. Root respiration per unit dry matter and specific net uptake rates of N and P were increased more by VAM infection than by P addition. Neither the contribution of the alternative respiratory path nor the relative growth rate could account for the differences in root respiration rate between VAM and non-VAM plants. It was estimated that increased fungal respiration (87%) and ion uptake rate (13%) contributed to the higher respiratory activity of VAM roots of P. major.  相似文献

Effect and Aftereffect of Temperature on Respiration of Intact Plants   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Effects and aftereffects of typical temperatures of cultivar habitat (background temperature), heat-hardening, and cold-hardening temperatures on dark respiration of leaf segments and intact plants were investigated on plant species differing in cold tolerance—cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.), and narrow-leaved lupine (Lupinus angustifolium L.). At cold-hardening temperatures, the respiratory metabolism underwent rearrangements serving to compensate for elevated energy losses during plant adaptation. This was manifested in the increase in the respiratory coefficient (RC) and the Q 10 coefficient during hardening. The preconditioning of plants at hardening temperatures enhanced O2 uptake and elevated the ratio of growth respiration to maintenance respiration in the post-treatment period. Conversely, temperature variations within the background range had no aftereffect on RC, Q 10, and O2 uptake.  相似文献

The effect of temperature regime on growth and other morphological characteristics of barley plants (Hordeum distichum L., cv. Andrei) as dependent on the level of mineral nutrition was investigated in a controlled experiment. Plants were raised hydroponically at a high (0.22 g/(g day)) and low (0.05 g/(g day)) relative rates of the addition of mineral nutrients (R A). Mineral nutrients were daily added to the nutrient solutions in exponentially increased amounts to provide steady-state plant growth. At the optimum temperature regime (21/17°C, day/night), the plant relative growth rate (RGR) was proportional to the preset R A during the entire exponential period. Low R A led to a decrease in the nitrogen content in plants, plant weight, and respiratory activity, as well as to the increase in the relative root weight. Biomass accumulation at lowered temperature regime (13/8°C) and a high R A was 1.8-fold lower than at optimum temperature regime. Although under these conditions, the ratio of respiration to gross photosynthesis reduced threefold due to the decrease in the respiration rate, RGR of plants was equal to 0.11 ± 0.02 g/(g day), which was twice lower than the preset R A. These pointed to the decrease in plant ability to maintain a certain ratio of photosynthesis to respiration within a day. At a deficiency of mineral nutrition and low temperature, RGR reached the preset R A. Plants adapted to lowered temperature by a shift of the temperature optimum of their metabolism (heat production) to lower values. As a whole, a low variability of such growth parameters as RGR, C/N, and root to shoot weight ratio at different R A and lowered temperatures testified to the lessening of growth limitation by the mineral nutrition.__________Translated from Fiziologiya Rastenii, Vol. 52, No. 3, 2005, pp. 384–391.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Garmash.  相似文献

Plantago major L. ssp. major , a grassland species from a relatively nutrient-rich habitat, was grown in nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor culture solutions. Half of the plants were transferred from high to low or from low to high nutrient conditions. The rate of dry matter accumulation in both shoots and roots decreased slowly upon transfer of plants to low nutrient conditions and the shoot to root ratio was unaffected. The rate of structural growth of both roots and shoots increased upon transfer from low to high nutrient conditions and the shoot to root ratio, if calculated from non-structural-carbohydrate-free dry weights, increased.
Photosynthesis was largely independent of the nutrient supply. Root respiration, particularly the activity of the alternative oxidative pathway, decreased with increasing age. This decrease was ascribed to a decreased shoot to root ratio, which reduced the relative amount of carbohydrates translocated to the roots and thus the amount available for the alternative pathway. It is calculated that in young as well as in old plants grown in full nutrient solution 48% of the daily produced photosynthates was translocated to the roots.
This is at variance with data on P. lanceolata , where a decreasing proportion of the daily produced photosynthates was translocated to the roots when the plants grew older. It is concluded that shoot growth plus shoot respiration consumed a constant amount of the daily produced photosynthates in P. major and that the rest was left for translocation. It is further calculated that in P. major plants grown in full nutrient solution c . 25% and c . 2% of the daily produced photosynthates in young and old plants, respectively, was respired in a way that is not involved in production of energy that is utilized in growth and maintenance ('inefficient root respiration').
The results are discussed in comparison with those of P. lanceolata , a species from a relatively nutrient-poor habitat.  相似文献

Young plants of Lotus creticus creticus growing in a hydroponic culture were submitted to 0, 70 and 140 mM NaCl treatments for 28 d and the growth and ecophysiological characteristics of these plants have been studied. The growth of Lotus plants was not affected by salinity when applied for a short period (about 15 d); however, 140 mM NaCl induced a decrease in shoot RGR at the end of the treatment. The root growth was not decreased, even it was stimulated by 140 mM NaCl. The osmotic adjustment of Lotus plants at 70 and 140 mM NaCl maintained constant pressure potential, avoiding the visual wilting. For a similar leaf water potential, cuticular transpiration of salinized plants was lower than in control plants due to the salinity effect on the cuticle. Moreover, the presence of hairy leaves (60 and 160 trichomes per mm2 in young and adult leaves, respectively) allows keeping almost 81 % of sprayed water and absorbing the 9 % of the water retained, decreased the epidermal conductance to water vapour diffusion.  相似文献

Morphological and physiological characteristics of leaves from plant species collected in steppe communities in the various climatic zones in Eurasia were compared. The changes in leaf structure correlated with the major climatic factors. The mean thickness of leaves increased with increasing mean temperature of July and decreasing mean precipitation, which corresponded to aridity increase. The increased leaf thickness correlated with an increase in the specific leaf weight. The content of chlorophylls (a + b) in leaves greatly varied with plant habitats, whereas the chlorophyll a/b ratio remained unchanged. The chlorophyll content in leaf tissues had a general tendency to decrease with increasing leaf thickness. The leaf chlorophyll content positively correlated (R 2 = 0.77) with the proportion of chlorenchyma in leaf tissues. It is concluded that steppe plants adapt to climate aridization at the structural level by increasing the proportion of protective heterotrophic components of the leaf without changing the functional activity of photosynthetic tissues.  相似文献

The relationship between specific rate of respiration (respiration rate per unit root dry weight) and concentration of reduced nitrogen was examined for maize ( Zea mays L.) roots. Plants with 2 primary nodal root axes were grown for 8 days in a split-root hydroponic system in which NO-3 was supplied to both axes at 1.0 mol m−3, to one axis at 1.0 mol m−3 and the other axis at 0.0 mol m−3 or to both axes at 0.0 mol m−3 Respiration rates and root characteristics were measured at 2-day intervals. Specific rate of respiration was positively correlated in a nonlinear relationship with concentration of reduced nitrogen. The lowest specific rates of respiration occurred when neither axis received exogenous NO−3 and the concentration of reduced nitrogen in the axes was less than 9 mg g−1. The greatest rates occurred in axes that were actively absorbing NO−3 and contained more than 35 mg g−1 of reduced nitrogen. At 23 mg g−1 of reduced nitrogen, below which initiation of lateral branches was decreased by 30–50%. specific rate of respiration was 17% greater for roots actively absorbing NO−3 than for roots not absorbing NO−3 Increases in specific rate of respiration associated with concentrations of reduced nitrogen greater than 23 mg g−1 were concluded to be attributable primarily to proliferation of lateral branches.  相似文献

The in vitro cultures of apple rootstock MM 106 produced the highest fresh mass (FM) when 0.1 mM B was included in the culture medium. By increasing B concentration of the culture medium from 0.1 to 6.0 mM, FM and contents of B, P, Ca, and Mg in explants increased, whereas K, Fe, Mn, and Zn contents decreased. SPAD units of leaves characterizing chlorophyll contents declined as B concentration of the culture medium increased from 0.1 to 6.0 mM.  相似文献

Mineral nutrients of seeds constitute a significant source ofessential elements to seedlings and developing individuals ofvascular plants. In spite of their potential ecological significance, seed nutrient pools have attracted little attention with respectto calcifuge–calcicole behaviour of plants. The objectivesof this study were, therefore, to compare concentrations of13 macro- and micronutrients (K, Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu,Zn, Mo, B, P and S) in seeds and leaves of 35 mainly herbaceousvascular plant species growing on both limestone (calcareous)and silicate (non-calcareous) soils. Concentrations of Rb andCo in seeds of plants originating from limestone soils were,on average, about half of those from silicate soils. Concentrationsof Mn, Mg, Zn and P of seeds were, or tended to be, lower orslightly lower in limestone-soil plants, whereas mean Ca andMo concentrations were higher. Comparing seed and leaf concentrationsof the same species from limestone and silicate soils generallydemonstrated a high P enrichment ratio, but a particularly lowK enrichment ratio in seeds, valid for both types of soil. Itwas also apparent that Fe and Mn, micronutrients which are lessreadily solubilized and taken up by plants on limestone soils, had significantly higher seed:leaf concentration ratios in plantsfrom limestone than from silicate soils, whereas the oppositewas true for Ca. This indicates a ‘strategy’ tosatisfy the demand of seedlings for elements which are lessreadily available in the soil.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Seed, leaf, plant, nutrient, content, calcareous, silicate, acid, soil.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of a reduced maize root-system size on root growth and nitrogen (N) uptake and flow within plants. Restriction of shoot-borne root growth caused a strong decrease in the absorption of root: shoot dry weight ratio and a reduction in shoot growth. On the other hand, compensatory growth and an increased N uptake rate in the remaining roots were observed. Despite the limited long-distance transport pathway in the mesocotyl with restriction of shoot-borne root growth, N cycling within these plants was higher than those in control plants, implying that xylem and phloem flow velocities via the mesocotyl were considerably higher than in plants with an intact root system. The removal of the seminal roots in addition to restricting shoot-borne root development did not affect whole plant growth and N uptake, except for the stronger compensatory growth of the primary roots. Our results suggest that an adequate N supply to maize plant is maintained by compensatory growth of the remaining roots, increased N uptake rate and flow velocities within the xylem and phloem via the mesocotyl, and reduction in the shoot growth rate.  相似文献
