Kiushitou (42°28N, 141°9E) is a lowland mire located in a residential area of northern Japan. We examined the 2-D distribution of hydrochemical variables and their seasonal changes in relation to plant communities in an attempt to conserve the Sphagnum fen (Sphagnum subfulvum). This mire is gently sloping and the upper area consists of alder and ash forests, while the lower area is covered with fen communities. The grassy fen, Moliniopsis japonica, occurs throughout the lower area, whereas the Sphagnum fen is restricted to the southwest part of the mire. anova and canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the occurrence of Sphagnum fen is negatively correlated with Mg, Ca and electrical conductivity (EC). These variables indicated that water in the upper forest area contained a high concentration of minerals from the neighboring residential area. Seasonal changes in EC values revealed that the watercourse from a spring point in an upper corner to the lowest drainage ditch was divided into two, southwest and northeast, courses. Because the northeast-course spring water joins mineral-rich water flowing from a point at the upper margin, the northeast part of the lower area contains considerable Ca and Mg. In contrast, the mineral-poor spring water flowing into the southwest part of the mire ensures the survival of the Sphagnum fen. Thus, when we stop the supply of mineral-rich water from the upper margin the area of the Sphagnum fen will expand into the northeast part of the mire. Two-dimensional details of the hydrochemical regime clarify the impact of mineral inflow and the expansion mechanisms of these minerals.  相似文献

Summary Of the four interspecific hybrids, three (A. graecizans var. graecizans X A. tricolor cv. Purple leaf, A. lividus var. lividus X A. tricolor var. viridis and A. gracilis X A. tricolor cv. Purple leaf) were studied cytologically. In all the three, differentiation between the parents is chiefly a result of interchanges and paracentric inversions. The interchange complexes may involve from four (A. gracilis X A. tricolor cv. Purple leaf) to fourteen (A. lividus var. lividus X A. tricolor var. viridis) chromosomes, indicating that the parents differ from each other in 1 to 6 interchanges. Because of the small size of the chromosomes, it is possible that crossing-over in interchange for small segments is restricted. The particular parental species representing the ancestral condition from which others were derived or compounded is difficult to pin-point. With preferential pairing and the restoration of fertility in the amphidiploid A. lividus-tricolor, it became clear that it is very likely that the interchanged segments are small and sterility in the hybrid is entirely chromosomal.This situation is in strong contrast to that in Sect. Amaranthus, where the single male flower per glomerule and huge showy inflorescences lead to more cross-pollination; coupled with this are strong morphological divergences between taxa and less genetic differentiation. In the Sect. Blitopsis, there are a number of male flowers per glomerule and small non-showy axillary inflorescences, leading to self-pollination, and less morphological but strong genetic differentiation by interchanges and inversions.  相似文献

Summary Oxygen isotope ratios were determined in leaf cellulose from two plant species at Barro Colorado (Republic of Panama) in 4 different plots, two of which were undergoing an irrigation treatment during the dry season. There is a gradient in 18O values of leaf cellulose from the understory to canopy leaves, reflecting the differences in relative humidity between these two levels of the forest. This gradient is most pronounced in irrigated plots. For irrigated plots there was a highly significant correlation between 18O and 13C values, which was not observed in control plots. This relationship can be explained by humidity controlling stomatal conductance. Low humidity affects 18O values of leaf water during photosynthesis, which isotopically labels cellulose during its synthesis. Low humidity also decreases stomatal conductance, which affects discrimination against carbon-13 by photosynthetic reactions, thus affecting the 13C values of photosynthates. WUE values calculated by using plant carbon and oxygen isotope ratios were similar to those observed with gas exchange measurements in other tropical and temperate area. Thus the concurrent analysis of carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of leaf material can potentially be useful for long term estimation of assimilation and evapotranspiration regimes of plants.  相似文献

A new genus, Papillonema gen.n., is erected to accomodate the two species P. danieli gen. et sp. n. and P. clavatum (Gerlach, 1957) comb.n. from intertidal sediments of a tropical mangrove. Papillonema gen.n. is characterized by prominent papilliform labial sensillae, an elongate muscular terminal bulb (up to 60% of pharyngeal length), and three precloacal supplements. Recognized as a priority three decades ago, in situ conservation of crop wild relatives has developed theoretical and methodological focus and achieved significant on-the-ground progress in the last 10 years, most notably under the impetus of the plant genetic resources community. Literature and Internet searches and interviews with experts were undertaken as a basis for reviewing the current status and trends of this effort worldwide. Country-by-country summaries on in situ crop wild relatives conservation activities are presented, and recommendations are made for future action. Principal recommendations include flagging of appropriate taxa as crop wild relatives in botanical and conservation databases, undertaking gap analyses to locate crop wild relatives hotspots, and enhancing cooperation between the plant genetic resources and plant conservation communities.  相似文献

Partitioning of nitrogen among species was determined in a stand of a tall herbaceous community. Total amount of nitrogen in the aboveground biomass was 261 mmol N m–2, of which 92% was in three dominant species (Phragmites, Calamagrostis and Carex) and the rest was in the other eight subordinate species. Higher nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf area (n L) with increasing photosynthetically active photon flux density (PPFD) were observed in all species except for three short species. The changes in n L within species were mainly explained by the different nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf mass, while the differences in n L between species were explained by the different SLM (leaf mass per unit leaf area). Photon absorption per unit leaf nitrogen ( N ) was determined for each species. If photosynthetic activity was proportional to photon absorption, N should indicate in situ PNUE (photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency). High N of Calamagrostis (dominant) resulted from high photon absorption per unit leaf area ( area ), whereas high N of Scutellaria (subordinate) resulted from low n L although its area was low. Species with cylinder-like leaves (Juncus and Equisetum) had low N , which resulted from their high n L. Light-saturated CO2 exchange rates per unit leaf area (CER) and per unit leaf nitrogen (potential PNUE) were determined in seven species. Species with high CER and high n L (Phragmites, Carex and Juncus) had low potential PNUE, while species with low CER and low n L showed high potential PNUE. NUE (ratio of dry mass production to nitrogen uptake) was approximated as a reciprocal of plant nitrogen concentration. In most species, three measures of nitrogen use efficiency (NUE, N and potential PNUE) showed strong conformity. Nitrogen use efficiency was high in Calamagrostis and Scutellaria, intermediate in Phragmites and relatively low in Carex. Nitrogen use efficiency of subordinate species was as high as or even higher than that of dominant species, which suggests that growth is co-limited by light and nitrogen in the subordinate species.  相似文献

We investigated plant species diversity as it related to stand structure and landscape parameters in abandoned coppice forests in a temperate, deciduous forest area of central Japan, where Fagus crenata was originally dominant. The species occurring in the study plots were classified into habitat types based on a statistical analysis of their occurrence bias in particular habitats (e.g., primary forest, coniferous plantation) in the landscape studied. The relationships between stand structure, which reflected the gradient of management, and forest floor plant species diversity (H and J) and richness (number of species per unit area) were not significant. However, these factors did influence the forest floor plant composition of the different types of habitat. According to the multiple regression analysis, species diversity and the richness of forest floor plants was affected by landscape parameters rather than by stand structure. For trees, species richness was mainly affected by the relative dominance of F. crenata, which is one of the stand structure parameters that decreases with intensive management. This is probably because many of the tree species that are characteristic of coppice forests increase after F. crenata have been eliminated by management; these species are not dominant in the original forest, where they are suppressed by F. crenata, the shade-tolerant dominant species. The species diversity (H and J) of trees was positively correlated with some landscape parameters, including the road density around the study plot, which may be associated with the intensity of management activity. The number of disturbance-tolerant species increased with increasing road density. Stand structure mainly affected disturbance-intolerant forest floor plant species and disturbance-tolerant tree species. Thus, the species diversity responses differed between forest floor plants and trees. The impact of forest management on species diversity was more prominent for forest floor plants.  相似文献

Phosphorylation of the subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) is known to be an important translational control mechanism in all eukaryotes with the major exception of plants. Regulation of mammalian and yeast eIF2 activity is directly governed by specific phosphorylation on Ser-51. We now demonstrate that recombinant wheat wild-type (51S) but not mutant 51-Ala (51A) protein is phosphorylated by human PKR and yeast GCN2, which are defined eIF2 kinases. Further, only wheat wild-type eIF2 is a substrate for plant-encoded, double-stranded RNA-dependent kinase (pPKR) activity. Plant PKR and GCN2 phosphorylate recombinant yeast eIF2 51S but not the 51A mutant demonstrating that pPKR has recognition site capability similar to established eIF2 kinases. A truncated version of wild-type wheat eIF2 containing 51S but not the KGYID motif is not phosphorylated by either hPKR or pPKR suggesting that this putative eIF2 kinase docking domain is essential for phosphorylation. Taken together, these results demonstrate the homology among eukaryotic eIF2 species and eIF2 kinases and support the presence of a plant eIF2 phosphorylation pathway.  相似文献

We carried out an inventory of the cactus species occurring in the Mier y Noriega region. The study was conducted in a square-shaped area of approximately 2845km2, located in the southeastern segment of the Chihuahuan Desert region, between 23°00 – 23°30 lat. N and 100°00 – 100°30 long. W, including parts of the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí, Mexico. In order to know the cactus diversity, we developed an intensive method of botanical collecting; a total of 80 sites were sampled. With 54 species recorded, of which 28 were new area records and 14 new state records, the Mier y Noriega region is considered moderately rich in cactus species. Cactus diversity is distributed unevenly in the area, and the greatest species concentration occurs in its southwestern portion. The analysis of geographical distribution of individual species showed that the highest proportion (82%) are endemic to the Chihuahuan Desert Region, six of them having extremely narrow distributions. In addition, 19 species are considered endangered. With the aid of a complementarity analysis, we propose a strategy for the optimal conservation of the species and their habitats.  相似文献

To determine whether geographic patterns of variation in the frequency of shell polymorphisms in the land snail Cepaea nemoralis mark regions of extensive genetic differentiation, allele frequencies at six polymorphic enzyme-encoding loci were analyzed electrophoretically in 74 samples from the central part of the Spanish Pyrenees. Within a large area effect for unbanded shells on the southern slope of the Pyrenees, there is no enzyme locus at which allele frequencies are homogeneous. Because this morphological area effect does not mark a region of pervasive genetic change, the genetic structure of populations in the region studied does not conform to recent models of area effect speciation. Factor analysis of allele frequencies at three loci controlling shell polymorphisms and six enzyme loci separated populations on the southern slope into two groups, one of which is similar to the group of populations on the northern slope. There is therefore considerable geographic structuring of both molecular and morphological polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

Stand structure and woody species diversity in a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest grown in a silicate habitat, Okinawa Island, have been investigated on the basis of stand stratification. The forest stand consisted of four layers. The floristic composition of the top and the lower three layers was only slightly similar, although approximately one-third of the species were common to them. Mean tree weight decreased from the top toward the bottom layer whereas tree density increased from the top downward. This trend resembled the mean weight–density trajectory of self-thinning plant populations. The relationship between mean tree height and tree density for the upper two layers supported Yamakuras quasi –1/2 power law of tree height. The values of the Shannon–Wiener index, H, and the equitability index, J, tended to increase from the top layer downward except for the bottom layer. The values of H and J were, respectively, 4.83 bit and 0.82 for trees taller than 0.10 m. The lower layers contained many species of smaller height. High species diversity of the forest depended on small trees in the lower layers. Conservation of small trees in the lower layers, especially the bottom layer, is indispensable for sound maintenance of Okinawan evergreen broadleaf forests.  相似文献

Many generalist herbivores, especially adult beetles, are facultative florivores, feeding on leaves but readily accepting floral tissues when available. We speculated that day-flying beetles with high energetic requirements would benefit from dietary mixing with nutrient-rich flower tissues and favor them during foraging. We tested that Floral Affinity Hypothesis with Popillia japonica, a day-active ruteline scarab that feeds intermittently throughout its adult life on multiple plant species. In field tests with six species of flowering hosts, far more landings occurred on flowers than on foliage for all plants except Hibiscus syriacus which bears flowers along the main stem rather than terminally. Trials with elevated plants showed that height of the floral display contributes to beetles landing on flowers. Flower petals generally were preferred over leaves in laboratory choice tests. Nitrogen and water content were comparable or higher in foliage than in petals, but plant sugars were much higher in petals. Longevity and fecundity of beetles provided single-plant diets of Hibiscus, Rosa × hybrida, or Trifolium flowers for 3 weeks were as high, or higher, than for beetles fed foliage of Tilia cordata, a highly suitable resource. As expected, rotating flowers or Tilia foliage with marginally suitable Quercus palustris foliage enhanced those parameters relative to a diet of Quercus alone, but beetles provided high-quality Tilia foliage also benefitted from dietary mixing with flowers. Nearly all past dietary mixing studies concerned immature insects, for which growth rate is paramount. Opportunistic florivory by adult beetles represents a type of dietary mixing wherein the premium may be calorie-rich food for fueling flight muscles, with ensuing reproductive benefits.  相似文献

The seeds of 19 sunflower species were compared on the basis of their protein contents and the relative proportions of their protein fractions. The globulin content varied from 50% to about 70% and the albumin content from 18% to 35% according to the species. The level of intermediateMr polypeptides showed a great variability (9.6 to 24.3%). Comparative studies onMr polymorphism were carried out by means of sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of non reduced and/or reduced samples using both mono- and bidimensional procedures. Polypeptide constituents of helianthinin were compared including both number and molecular size (cultivatedH. annuus was used as a standard). Studies focused on differences observed between the major two (Mr 38 000), (Mr 32 000) and (Mr 25 500), (21 000) polypeptides families constituting the main A, B, and C subunits. and polypeptides analyses permit to discriminate easilyH. petiolaris from the other species. Charge polymorphism was studied using isoelectric focusing (IEF) and IEF-PAGE in mono and bidimensional procedures in the presence or absence of 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). Only a specific 4 polypeptide enables an easy discrimination betweenH. petiolaris and all the other species. Detailed nomenclature of the , and , polypeptides constituting the different helianthinin globulin subunits is given via the results of pI andMr analyses. Monodimensional IEF patterns of the more basic albumins (pI > 8.0) appear to provide a more valuable approach to identifying specific protein markers.  相似文献

Summary The timing mechanism underlying ultradian (2–3 h) activity patterns in the common vole, Microtus arvalis, was studied using behavioural deprivation experiments. These were aimed at distinguishing between a homeostatic control mechanism, in which the rhythmic behaviour itself is part of the causal loop, and a clock mechanism, independent of the behaviour.In 175 experiments, deprivation of food during 3 ultradian cycles in (subjective) daytime did not result in significant changes in the ultradian periodicity of attempts to obtain the food, compared with ad lib. access to food and water. A minor, but significant increase in ultradian activity time () occurred in the course of the deprivation, but this was compensated by a shorter ultradian rest (). These results were obtained both in intact animals (n = 24), which showed ultradian and circadian rhythmicity in behaviour, and in animals (n = 21) with electrolytic lesions aimed at the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), which lacked the circadian modulation of behaviour. Simultaneous deprivation of water and food in 8 voles without circadian rhythmicity during 40 experiments also did not lead to any change in the ultradian periodicity of feeding attempts.Rest deprivation was studied in 5 SCN lesioned voles, by forcing running wheel activity to continue following spontaneous running. Thus, the experimental activity bout was artificially lengthened to 2–9 h in 67 experiments. The onset of the subsequent rest episodes occurred independent of the duration of the preceding . The duration of was dependent on the preceding, experimental in a periodic fashion. The interval experimental (=lengthened +following ) was equal to one, two or three times the control (obtained on nonexperimental days). This result fits the prediction of a clock model and is in conflict with a monotonicincrease of with , as expected in a homeostatic, restorative process.It is concluded that the ultradian timing of activity in the common vole can be explained neither by homeostatic hunger or thirst mechanisms nor by homeostatic rest/activity regulation. Estimates of nitrogen fixation by trees on an aridity gradient in Namibia   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Summary Nitrogen (N2) fixation was estimated along an aridity gradient in Namibia from the natural abundance of 15N (15N value) in 11 woody species of the Mimosacease which were compared with the 15N values in 11 woody non-Mimosaceae. Averaging all species and habitats the calculated contribution of N2 fixation (N f ) to leaf nitrogen (N) concentration of Mimosaceae averaged about 30%, with large variation between and within species. While in Acacia albida N f was only 2%, it was 49% in Acacia hereroensis and Dichrostachys cinerea, and reached 71% in Acacia melifera. In the majority of species N f was 10–30%. There was a marked variation in background 15N values along the aridity gradient, with the highest 15N values in the lowland savanna. The difference between 15N values of Mimosaceae and non-Mimosaceae, which is assumed to result mainly from N2 fixation, was also largest in the lowland savanna. Variations in 15N of Mimosaceae did not affect N concentrations, but higher 15N-values of Mimosaeae are associated with lower carbon isotope ratios (13C value). N2 fixation was associated with reduced intrinsic water use efficiency. The opposite trends were found in non-Mimosaceae, in which N-concentration increased with 15N, but 13C was unaffected. Summary The short term effects of irrigation on diurnal changes in leaf and titratable acidity were examined both inSempervivum montanum and inSedum album, a facultative CAM plant, in the Spanish Pyrenees. InSemperivivum, leaf responded rapidly to irrigation and, in both the control and irrigated plants, increased during the day and decreased during the night and early morning. By contrast, leaf inSedum responded more slowly to irrigation and showed a decrease during the day and an increase in the period between evening and early morning. Under the conditions of the short-term experiments, changes in acid metabolism were not observed in either species following irrigation. The results suggest that transpirational water loss together with redistribution of water within the plant are more important than the osmotic concentration of malic acid in determining leaf in both species and that daytime water loss is greater inSedum than inSempervivum.The effect of long-term water stress on leaf and acid levels was also assessed in both species over a 3-week period. Both leaf and acidification inSempervivum decreased over this time period but could, at least partially, be reversed by irrigation. InSedum, leaf also declined but a more gradual reduction in acidification occurred than inSempervivum. Irrigation inSedum at least partially reversed the decline in leaf but produced a complex pattern of acid metabolism. Nocturnal acidification in the irrigated plants was lower than in the non-irrigated control when preceded by a cool day but showed complete recovery following a hot day. It is suggested inSedum album that C3 photosynthesis during the preceding light period, as determined by light intensity and leaf temperature, may be important in determining the extent of nocturnal acidification under field conditions.  相似文献

To characterise the physiology of development and senescence for Grevillea Sylvia floral organs, respiration, ethylene production and ACC concentrations in harvested flowers and flower parts were measured. The respiration rate of harvested inflorescences decreased over time during senescence. In contrast, both ethylene production and ACC concentration increased. Individual flowers, either detached from cut inflorescences held in vases at 20 °C or detached from in planta inflorescences at various stages of development, had similar patterns of change in ACC concentration and rates of respiration and ethylene production as whole inflorescences. The correlation between ACC concentration and ethylene production by individual flowers detached from cut inflorescences held in vases was poor (r2 = 0.03). The isolated complete gynoecium (inclusive of the pedicel) produced increasing amounts of ethylene during development. Further sub-division of flower parts and measurement of their ethylene production at various stages of development revealed that the distal part of the gynoecium (inclusive of the stigma) had the highest rate of ethylene production. In turn, anthers had higher rates of ethylene production and also higher ACC concentrations than the proximal part of the gynoecium (inclusive of the ovary). Rates of ethylene production and ACC concentrations for tepal abscission zone tissue and adjacent central tepal zone tissue were similar. ACC concentration in pollen was similar to that in senescing perianth tissue. Overall, respiration, ethylene and ACC content measurements suggest that senescence of G. Sylvia is non-climacteric in character. Nonetheless, the phytohormone ethylene is produced and evidently mediates normal flower development and non-climacteric senescence processes.  相似文献

Summary The degree of winter desiccation resistance exhibited by Larix lyallii Parl. was assessed by determination of water potential components and content of buds, xylem pressure potential ( xylem) of twigs and amount of damage through winter at timberline in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Comparative measurements were made on sympatric evergreen tree species to evaluate differences in winter desiccation avoidance and tolerance between evergreen and deciduous trees. Total () and osmotic plus matric potentials ( + ) of L. lyallii buds were lowest in December (-5.0 to-5.3 MPa and-6.6 to-7.0 MPa, respectively) when temperatures were lowest. Bud and water content increased in late winter while xylem of twigs continued to decline until March. The buds were isolated from the xylem from October through February, as indicated by large differences in water potential between the two organs during this time. Buds thus avoided desiccation as water was lost from the twigs. At the same time the buds were tolerant of very low and + , a characteristic which is an important component of freezing damage resistance. Desiccation damage to buds of L. lyallii was much less than that to buds of similar-sized nearby trees of Abies lasiocarpa, although xylem of both species was similar. The deciduous habit apparently confers a significant advantate to L. lyallii, which dominated the upper timberline sites, in reduced susceptibility to winter desiccation damage. Other deciduous timberline species might also benefit from this advantage where winter conditions are desiccating.Seedlings of L. lyallii were also studded for their winter desiccation resistance because they have a large component of non-deciduous (wintergreen) needles that are photosynthetically active through two growing seasons and must overwinter as mature tissue. Experimental exposure of these needles, which are normally protected by the snowpack, caused nearly complete mortality of the wintergreen needles when twig xylem was only-3.9 MPa. Isozymes, vegetative and reproductive morphology, seasonality, vertical and geographic distributions and chromosomes were compared for six pairs of putative sibling species of Porphyra (P. abbottae/P. torta, P. fallax subsp. fallax/P. fallax subsp. conwayae, P. amplissima/P. cuneiformis, P. fucicola/P. leucostica, P. miniata/P. variegata, P. umbilicalis/P. umbilicalis) and among five species in a complex (P. brumalis, P. kurogii, P. linearis, P. pseudolinearis, and P. purpurea.) Geographic distribution and zymograms for certain proteins showed the greatest change between species pairs: only one pair of species had identical distributions, and most species pairs were disjunct; every species had a different allozyme for GOT-1, whereas all species had apparently identical proteins for phycoerythrin. Seasonality and habitat exhibited moderate differentiation: Northeast Pacific sibling species were characterized by a high intertidal winter species pairing with a mid intertidal spring species, whereas all but one of the other species pairs exhibited nearly identical vertical distributions and seasonalities. There were few changes in morphology: most species pairs had essentially identical morphologies and coloration and the same arrangement of reproductive cells. Chromosome numbers and karyotypes were identical for species pairs and in the species complex. These results provide evidence for different rates of evolution of different characters in the genus Porphyra.  相似文献
