Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) is grown as a pasture legume in several temperate regions of the world where the soils are acidic and infertile, and the rainfall is winter dominant and less than 600 mm annually. It is particularly important in southern Australia where more than 16 million ha have been sown with this species as the pasture legume component. Nine viruses have been recorded infecting subterranean clover in the field. These are alfalfa mosaic, bean yellow mosaic (pea mosaic), beet western yellows, clover yellow vein, cucumber mosaic, pea enation mosaic, soybean dwarf (subterranean clover red leaf), subterranean clover mottle and white clover mosaic. In addition there is an important problem referred to as subterranean clover stunt that was assumed to be caused by a virus but whose aetiology is still unknown. The importance of these diseases is reviewed and details on their epidemiologies are outlined together with details on progress towards their control and some comments on matters worthy of attention in the future. Reference is also made to several exotic viruses known to infect subterranean clover experimentally that could possible cause problems if introduced into Australia.  相似文献

Regeneration of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) was achieved by both shoot organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. Shoots derived via organogenesis were initiated from the hypocotyls of mature imbibed seed. The hypocotyl, including the emerging radicle, was sliced longitudinally into two halves and cultured on shoot induction medium. After 30 days, adventitious shoots were formed from the hypocotyl region while the radicle showed no development. Shoots were then subcultured onto shoot multiplication medium and finally onto a root initiation medium. Histological studies revealed that shoots arose de novo and did not originate from pre-existing meristems. In the second regeneration protocol, shoot apical meristems from young seedlings were induced to form callus. Following four to six weeks culture in the dark, somatic embryos appeared spontaneously on the calli. A majority of embryos had a well-defined root pole, two cotyledonary lobes, and were capable of germination, albeit at a low frequency. Regenerated plants obtained from both protocols appeared phenotypically normal.  相似文献

Twelve widely grown cultivars of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) were screened both under controlled environment conditions for their resistance to five fungi commonly associated with root rot and under field conditions for their resistance to natural root infections. All cultivars showed decreased seedling survival (particularly from Pythium irregulare and Rhizoctonia solani), tap and lateral root rot (particularly from Fusarium avenaceum, P. irregulare, and R. solani) and reduced plant size (particularly from R. solani and P. irregulare). Individual cultivars generally differed in their response to the five pathogens and for any one pathogen there was generally a range of cultivar susceptibilities. Cultivars with the best resistance to individual root pathogens were identified. The results for the five individual pathogens under controlled conditions only showed correlation with field data for some of the parameters compared.  相似文献

Summary Effects of copper deficiency on the development of subterranean clover root nodules were studied. These included a depression of the bacteroid content, an accumulation of starch in the invaded cells and a reduction in the rate of development of the nodule apex. A similar pattern of increasing severity of metabolic effects in the youngest tissues was also found in leaves, but at a later stage of plant development than in nodules. At low copper supply the copper content of tissues and the activity of known copper-containing enzymes was depressed. The relevance of the observations to the disturbance of metabolism within the low copper nodules was discussed. It was suggested that low activity of copper containing enzymes (e.g. cytochrome c oxidase) might be important for maintenance of low oxygen tension within the nodule cells essential for nitrogen fixing activity. Fungicide drenches of benomyl, metalaxyl, iprodione, propamocarb, or thiram were applied to intact soil cores taken from known root rot affected fields in Western Australia, to control subterranean clover root rot. Metalaxyl was the most effective in reducing seedling damping-off. The most effective fungicide for reducing the level of rotting of both tap and lateral root systems of survixing plants varied from season to season at one site and varied between different sites in any one season with each fungicide giving a significant reduction in root disease on at least one occasion. Results suggest that different individuals or complexes of root pathogens were operative between seasons in any one site, and between sites for any one season. In some instances it appears that different individual root pathogens or pathogen complexes were operative on tap roots compared to lateral roots.  相似文献

The role of water relations and abscisic acid (ABA) in the responsesto drought were studied in a mediterranean forage crop, Trifoliumsubterraneum L. under field conditions. Soil and plant waterstatus, leaf gas exchange parameters, and xylem sap ABA contentwere determined at different times during a long-term soil dryingepisode in irrigated and droughted plants. The diurnal time-coursesof these parameters were also measured at the end of a droughtperiod. In response to soil drying stomatal conductance (g) was reducedearly to 50% that of irrigated plants before any substantialchange in water potential was detected. A close logarithmicregression between photosynthesis rate (A) and g was present.For the first weeks of drought the decline in A was less pronouncedthan in g, thus increasing water use efficiency. Stomatal conductanceduring diurnal time-courses showed no consistent relationshipswith respect to etther ABA or leaf water potential. Throughoutthe experimental period dependence of g on leaf water statuswas evident from the tight correlation (r2=0.88, P<0.01)achieved between stomatal conductance and midday water potential,but the correlation was also high when comparing g with respectto ABA content in xylem sap (r=0.83, P<0.001). However, thestomata from drought acclimated plants were apparently moresensitive to xylem ABA content. For similar xylem ABA concentrationsstomatal conductance was significantly higher in irrigated thanin waterstressed plants. The effectiveness of resistance to subterranean clover mottle sobemovirus (SCMoV) previously identified in different genotypes of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) inoculated with infective sap in the glasshouse, was tested in two field experiments which used the grazing animal as virus vector. Replicated plots each consisting of paired test rows of 20 different genotypes were used. Clover plants infected with SCMoV were transplanted in between the paired test rows and these acted as sources of the virus for spread by grazing sheep. Although used in different years at different sites with different virus isolates, the field exposure methodology employed produced consistent results. The genotypes each behaved similarly in both experiments as regards the relative extents of SCMoV infection that developed, levels ranging from 0–98%. The previously identified resistance in six ‘highly resistant’ and three ‘partially resistant’ cultivars was effective under field conditions. However, the ‘partial resistance’ in three others was overcome, cvs Green Range and Mt Barker developing levels of infection approaching those in ‘susceptible’ cultivars, while an intermediate infection level developed in cv. Karridale. The three cultivars in which partial resistance was not effective all belonged to ssp. subterraneum. In subterranean clover breeding programmes, field screening using the grazing animal as a vector is advisable to determine whether SCMoV resistance found by sap inoculation is still effective under field conditions.  相似文献

In Western Australia, infection with cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was widespread in all three subspecies of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) growing in plots belonging to the Australian National Subterranean Clover Improvement Programme. Seed-borne CMV was detected in seed harvested in 1984–1986 of 18/25 cultivars from two collections of registered cultivars; seed transmission rates ranged up to 8.8%. Seed samples from CMV-inoculated plants of 11 cultivars transmitted the virus to 0.5–8.7% of seedlings. Seed transmission rates greater than 5% were obtained only with cvs Enfield, Green Range and Nangeela. CMV was not detected in seed harvested in 1975–1981 from one of the registered cultivar collections, in 17 commercial seed stocks from 1986 or in a survey of subterranean clover pastures.
Symptoms in subterranean clover naturally infected with CMV included mottle, leaflet downcurling and dwarfing but severity varied with cultivar and selection. CMV isolates from different sources varied in virulence when inoculated to subterranean clover; two (both from subterranean clover) were severe, two moderate and three (including one from subterranean clover) mild. In pot tests, CMV decreased herbage production and root growth (dry wts) of cv. Green Range by 49% and 59% respectively. In spaced-plants growing in plots, CMV decreased herbage production and root growth of cvs Green Range and Northam by 59–630 and seed production of cv. Green Range by 45%. In rows sown with infected seed, aphid spread increased infection levels to 75% in cv. Green Range and 44% in cv. Esperance and losses in herbage production of 42% and 29% respectively were recorded.

Summary The root characteristics and sulfur absorption of Trikkala sub-clover and Wimmera ryegrass were compared in a pot experiment in which plants were grown at two levels of sulfur supply (0 and 64 mgS/pot) for a period of 40 days after emergence.Ryegrass roots had a greater weight and root weight ratio, but a lower sulfur content than sub-clover roots at both levels of sulfur supply. Ryegrass roots were longer, had a greater length per unit weight, longer root hairs, and hence a larger volume and surface area than sub-clover roots. However, when the sulfur content in the whole plant was related to the root parameters, sub-clover absorbed a far greater amount of sulfur, irrespective of whether the content was expressed on the basis of the weight, length, volume or surface area of the roots.Sulfur application had relatively little effect on the morphology of roots of either species. However, whilst sulfur application increased the weight of both shoots and roots, it decreased the root weight ratio for sub-clover but not for ryegrass. Increasing sulfur supply reduced the total length of sub-clover roots but tended to increase the length of ryegrass roots. For both species, the length per unit weight of roots decreased, and the average root diameter increased, with increasing sulfur supply. Sulfur application decreased the volume and surface area of sub-clover roots, but increased these parameters in ryegrass roots.  相似文献

The amount of cervical mucus recovered from control ovariectomized ewes increased with increasing doses of oestradiol benzoate (OB), while the maximum Spinnbarkeit of mucus occurred at an intermediate dose of OB. Neither the amount nor the Spinnbarkeit of mucus varied with the dose of OB in ewes with permanent infertility caused by grazing oestrogenic pasture (clover-affected ewes). Furthermore, the increase in Spinnbarkeit of cervical mucus seen in normal ewes treated over a 3-day period with OB or with implants containing oestradiol did not occur in affected ewes. In control ewes treated repeatedly with OB, production of mucus declined within 5 days, but no change in secretion was detectable in clover-affected ewes. Therefore, neither the amount nor the duration of oestrogenic stimulation affected the cervical mucus in ewes with clover disease. Affected ewes produced more mucus than did controls in the absence of oestrogenic stimulation. It is concluded that the relatively normal volume of mucus in affected ewes treated with OB results largely from autonomous production. The Spinnbarkeit does not increase in these ewes because the ability of the cervix to respond to oestrogen is impaired.  相似文献
