Larvae of 63 Bivalvia taxa were found in Amursky Bay. Of these, 47 were identified to the species level. Larvae of 55 taxa were found throughout the bay. The highest species diversity was recorded in the northeastern part and in the center of the southern part of the bay, as well as at the exit from it. Larvae of Mactra chinensis, Mytilus coruscus, Crassostrea gigas, Teredo navalis, Mya japonica, and Mysella ventricosa were widely distributed in the bay. The maximum numbers of species were observed in July and September. A comparison of species lists using the set-theory method showed that the species complexes typical of different parts of Amursky Bay are formed under the influence of the Razdolnaya River runoff flow from the north and marine waters coming from the south. The mean density of larvae during the observation period was 1100 specimens/m3 in the northern and 735 specimens/m3 in the southern part of the bay. The highest density of larvae in Amursky Bay was observed at the end of June, the beginning of July, and in September; the minimal larval density occurred in April, May, and August. While the species diversity was similarly high, the density of larvae was significantly higher in Amursky Bay than in the nearby Ussuriisky Bay.  相似文献

The species composition, period of occurrence, density, and distribution of the larvae of burrowing shrimp of the infraorders Gebiidea and Axiidea in Amursky and Ussuriysky bays (Sea of Japan) were studied in May–October 2008. Larvae of eight species of this group were found in plankton samples. The period of occurrence of larvae in the bays was longest in Upogebia major and Nihonotrypaea petalura (4 and 3 months, respectively). Zoeae of the rest of the species occurred in the plankton for no more than 2 months, indicating a single larval hatching during the reproductive season. The average density of gebiidean and axiidean larvae was low and reached the highest values (4 ind./m3) in June in Amursky Bay and in July in Ussuriysky Bay; their contribution to the total density of decapod larvae was not above 18%. In general, larvae of the family Upogebiidae dominated in Amursky Bay and larvae of the Callianassidae were predominant in Ussuriysky Bay. The zoeae of U. major (up to 37 ind./m3) and Nihonotrypaea makarovi (up to 46 ind./m3) were most numerous. Larvae of the family Axiidae were recorded only in very low numbers in both bays.  相似文献

The species composition, period of occurrence, density, and distribution of brachyuran crab larvae (Decapoda: Brachyura) in the Amursky and Ussuriysky bays (Sea of Japan) were studied in May–October 2007 and 2008. The larvae of this group were not numerous, with peak densities occurring in July at maximum water temperatures. The average brachyuran larvae density was up to 126.9 ind./m3 in Ussuriysky Bay and 68 ind./m3 in Amursky Bay; the contribution of Brachyura to all decapod larvae reached 80–90%. In Amursky Bay, the highest density of brachyuran larvae (up to 584 ind./m3) was observed along the western coast over depths to 20 m; in Ussuriysky Bay, the larval density was highest (up to 1817 ind./m3) in the shallowwater northern part and progressively decreased with depth. Larvae of 18 brachyuran species were found in plankton samples. In Amursky Bay, intertidal crab larvae of the genus Hemigrapsus dominated, Eriocheir japonica larvae were fairly numerous. Larvae of the pea crabs Pinnixa rathbuni and Tritodynamia rathbunae and zoeae of the bigtooth rock crab Glebocarcinus amphioetus were predominant in Ussuriysky Bay.  相似文献

Cirripede larvae can occur year-round in temperate and tropicalwaters, often in significant numbers, yet the species compositionof the ‘Balanus sp.’ component is rardy studied.Weekly plankton samples were analyzed qualitatively for larvalcirripede species and stage over a year (1977–1978) attwo Rhode Island stations. Six species of larvae were foundin Lower Narragansett Bay (30° salinity). Semibalanus balanoidesand Balanus balanus have a single winter brood. S. balanoidesis the predominant winter breeder with a minor release of naupliiin early December and major release in March followed by cypridsin mid-April.B. balanus populations release all larvae in Marchwith cyprids in mid-April. Balanus crenatus is mainly a winterbreeder, but has multiple broods; it does not breed in July-Septemberwhen the water temperature is above 18°C. Balanus venustusis the predominant summer breeder, and larvae were observedfrom May through December (water >8°C). Larvae of Chthamalusfragilis and Balanus eburneus occur in low numbers from May-October.At the Pettaquamscutt River site (12 salinity), Balanus improvisuslarvae predominate and early stage nauplii (I-II) occur in samplesyear round (0–27°C). Two peaks of later stage naupliiand cyprids occur in late spring (May) and early winter (Nov.-Jan.).Continued temperatures bdow 5°C or above 20°C appearto inhibit larval development. Comparison of results with existing literature reveals severalsignificant findings. The bimodal rdease of S. balanoides larvaeis unusual and may be in response to the phytoplankton dynamicsof the year; however, the existence of distinct races of S.balanoides may also be a factor. Larvae of B. venustus predominatein the lower bay during the summer, yet this species is unreportedin past studies. B. improvisus nauplii are more cold tolerantthan previously reported. Comparison of findings with reportedbreeding patterns in Florida indicate significant differencesin temperature responses between northern and southern populations. 1Contribution No. 188 from EPA Environmental Research Laboratory,South Ferry Rd., Narragansett, RI 02882  相似文献

The fouling structure of the Japanese scallop was studied in Amursky Bay near Vladivostok. Fifty-six species of hydrobionts were identified. Barnacles prevailed in biomass and population density, and algae dominated in the number of species. The change in the dominant barnacle species observed in the fouling was caused, apparently, by the reproductive strategy of Hesperibalanus hesperius, which is more labile than that of Balanus rostratus, and by the anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem of the bay. The fouling was marked by bivalve and sea anemone species resistant to silting and pollution. The main groups of epibionts were classified as suspension feeders, and as selective detritophages that are characterized by their type of feeding. The total infestation of shells of the Japanese scallop by boring polychaetes and the depressed condition of most mollusks and algae evidenced the unfavorable ecological situation in the area surveyed.  相似文献

Based on materials from plankton surveys carried out in 2004–2009, the period of occurrence, density, and distribution of larvae of three commercial species of crabs in the Peter the Great bay and adjacent areas of Sea of Japan were studied. The larvae of the horsehair crab Erimacrus isenbeckii (Brandt, 1848) occurred in the plankton from mid-March to early June, within the range of water temperature from −1 to 10.8°C. The larvae of the helmet crab Telmessus cheiragonus (Tilesius, 1812) appeared in the plankton in mid-April and occurred to the end of June within the temperature range from 2.8 to 13.0°C. The larvae of the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio (O. Fabricius, 1788) appeared in the plankton in mid-April as well, but some individuals sporadically occurred until early August. All the species of crabs produced one generation of larvae for their reproduction season. The terms of larval stay in plankton depended on water temperature and the duration of the pelagic period increased in colder years. In that area, the larvae of C. opilio were the most abundant (up to 41 ind./m3) and the zoea density of horsehair and helmet crabs was significantly lower (no more than 2 ind./m3). The larvae of C. opilio occurred over the entire area of the Peter the Great bay; the greatest aggregations of their early stages were observed in its southwestern open part. The maximum density of E. isenbeckii zoea was recorded in the south of the Amursky bay and in the Posyet bay. Individual larvae of T. cheiragonus occurred in the Posyet bay and in the southern part of the Amursky and Ussuriisky bays. The late-stage larvae of all crab species were concentrated in areas of the coastal circulation.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of the gonads, as well as the size composition and abundance of larvae in plankton, we determined the seasonal and long-term dynamics of the reproduction of the mussel Mytilus coruscus in Amursky Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). Mussel gonads were in a mature condition in late July-early August; the spawning season continued from mid-August to mid-September. The larvae of this species occurred in plankton from June to September, under surface water temperatures of 14.5–23.5°C. The density of larvae in different years varied from 350 to 4500 ind/m3. Two peaks of larval abundance were observed annually, in June and September. The first peak was apparently provided by allochthonous larvae, the second, by larvae of the local population. The high density of larvae of M. coruscus in the plankton of Peter the Great Bay enabled us to consider this species as a potential object for mariculture.  相似文献

Year-round comprehensive study of fouling of the cooling system of the Vladivostok Heat Power Plant (VTETs-2) was carried out. The seasonal dynamics of pelagic larvae, their settling, and succession of fouling communities on test plates were analyzed in the intake scoop (Ussuriiskii Bay) and in Zolotoi Rog Bay (Amurskii Bay), which are subjected to thermal pollution by dump waters of VTETs-2. It was shown that the barnacles Balanus crenatus, B. improvisus, and B. amphitrite; bivalves Mytilus trossulus and Crassostrea gigas; polychaetes Polydora limicola and Hydroides ezoensis; and ascidians Molgula manhattensis and Diplosoma mitsukurii were background species in the plate fouling. A high correlation between the seasonal dynamics of larval plankton and the settling of spat was recorded only in some species. The total larval density in Zolotoi Rog Bay, despite the critical level of its pollution, more than 4 times exceeded that of the relatively clean Ussuriiskii Bay. The number of recorded species on the test plates was 2 times higher in Ussuriiskii Bay than in Zolotoi Rog Bay; however, the biomass and population density of settled spat of the dominant forms was several times lower in Ussuriiskii Bay. Thanks to thermal pollution, Zolotoi Rog Bay is an intermediate step for the introduction and acclimation of tropical species, such as B. amphitrite and M. manhattensis, brought by long-distance vessels. Measures aimed at the prevention of intensive settling of mytilids in the cooling system of VTETs-2 are suggested.  相似文献

Stage II nauplii of Balanus improvisus (Darwin) were obtained from laboratory-maintained adult barnacles. The immediate phototactic and photokinetic response of laboratory nauplii to light stimuli of known wavelength (460–540 nm) and quantal intensity was determined through use of closed-circuit videotape recordings quantified for computer analysis. Spectral and light intensity responses were compared with previous results using nauplii collected from the plankton. In both cases, nauplii exhibit a primary peak response to light near 480 nm and a secondary peak near 520 nm. Although the spectral response and basic patterns of photobehavior remain similar in field and laboratory nauplii, sensitivity to light intensity is significantly reduced in laboratory nauplii. Responses of fed and 24-h starved laboratory nauplii were also compared at three salinities (15, 20, 30‰). Starvation for 24 h, although inducing no major change in photopositive and photokinetic response of nauplii, can slightly depress spontaneous swimming speed and raise the threshold of intensity response for phototaxis.  相似文献

The flatworm Stylochus tauricus Jacubova has been found associated with the barnacle Balanus improvisus Darwin, on which it feeds. The predation rate (the number of barnacles eaten by one polyclad in a month) ranges between 5–10. Inside the empty shells of B. improvisus some egg-plates of S. tauricus were observed. Pelagic Götte's larvae aged 2–3 days possess 4 lobes while those aged 7–8 days have 5 lobes. Flatworms can prey on the young of another species Balanus eburneus Gould, whereas predation on the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. is rare. There is a direct correlation between predator abundance and prey ingested.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of the numbers of larvae of common fouling organisms—the barnacle Balanus improvisus and the bivalves Mytilaster lineatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis in Balaklava Bay (Black Sea)—were investigated during 2000 and 2001 within the framework of an ecological research project. Under the conditions of an increased anthropogenic load, seasonal fluctuations of the numbers and the distribution of larvae depend on rhythms of the breeding cycles of fouling invertebrates and on the hydrodynamic features of the region (water setup). The differences in the optimum temperatures, hatching intensity, and time of occurrence of larvae in the plankton, as well as the irregular distribution of larvae, allow the three major fouling organisms to reduce interspecific competition for food and the substrate.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Biologiya Morya, Shalaeva, Lisitskaya.  相似文献

The content of persistent organochlorine pesticides (DDT and its metabolites, -, - and -isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane, HCH) were studied in the tissues and organs of some fish and molluskan species from the lower reaches of the Tumen River and the contiguous part of Peter the Great Bay (Sivuchya Bay and Zapadnaya Bay of the Furugelm Isl.) and Amursky bay. The highest total content of HCHs (785.60 ng/g of gross mass) was revealed in the digestive gland of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis from Zapadnaya Bay and in the brain and the liver of the starry flounder Platichthys stellatus from the Tumen River (390.80 and 340.29 ng/g of gross mass). The maximum total content of DDT (270.70 ng/g of gross mass) was recorded in the brain of the dark plaice Pleuronectes obscurus from Zapadnaya Bay and in the liver of the far eastern smooth flounder Pleuronectes pinnifasciatus, caught in Amursky Bay to the west of Skrebtsov Isl. (212.80 ng/g of gross mass). The level of HCHs and DDT in mollusks and flounders from Zapadnaya Bay was higher than that in the same species from Sivuchya Bay. The concentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) in P. pinnifasciatus from the inner part of Amursky Bay at Skrebtsov Isl. was higher than in individuals of that species from the open part of the Bay at Peschany Pen. The DDT/DDE and DDT/DDT ratios evidenced the recent entry of DDT into the ecosystem of Peter the Great Bay. The southwest part of Peter the Great Bay, from the mouth of the Tumen River up to Furugelm Isl, was contaminated by HCHs to a greater extent than Amursky Bay. OCPs accumulated in appreciable quantities in the organs of fishes and mollusks of Peter the Great Bay, though their present content does not exceed sanitary–hygienic standards, a subsequent monitoring of their concentrations in biota is necessary.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that the initial surface wettability, is of importance in the settlement of macrofouling larvae such as barnacles, bryozoans and hydroids in the field as well as in laboratory assays. In this study we present results from laboratory assays using hydrophilic and hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) and cyprid larvae of Balanus improvisus (Darwin). The results obtained differ markedly from those reported for the barnacle Balanus amphitrite (Darwin), where a high surface wettability seemed to be preferred for settlement. Our results show that a surface with intermediary wettability (hydrophilic PS) reduced settlement by 38% as compared to surfaces of low wettability (hydrophobic PS) during an 8-day period. During the experiment, the wettability in the hydrophilic PS dishes was not significantly changed as measured by advancing contact angle with mQ water. Over an 8-day period wettability of the hydrophobic PS dishes approached that of the hydrophilic PS surfaces. We further conducted experiments with highly hydrophilic and highly hydrophobic methylsilane-treated glass surfaces with known chemistry. In this experiment, the settlement of cyprid larvae was completely inhibited by the high wettability surfaces. Contact angle measurements revealed that the wettability during the length of the experiment of the hydrophilic glass surfaces was not significantly altered. We conclude by these experiments that even an intermediate wettability can significantly affect the overall settlement success of the barnacle B. improvisus. The mechanism by which the settlement is impeded might be biologically mediated through the recognition by cyprid larvae of the molecular composition of the surface when the cyprid reverts to the settlement phase, i.e. when swimming behaviour is abandoned in favour of surface exploration, or it is mediated by physicochemical forces acting between the surface and the larval body or the larval antennules.  相似文献

Newly hatched stage I–II nauplii of Balanus improvisus (Darwin) were “totally starved” (until death) or “partially starved” for the first 48 h and 96 h of their development. Daily mortality and molting were monitored throughout larval development in both starved and fed control groups. Fed control animals exhibited a largely synchronous molting pattern with instars of equal duration. Total starvation suppressed molting beyond stage II; 50% mortality occurred in ≈4 days at both 15 and 21 °C, while longest survival time was 7 days at 15 °C and 6 days at 21 °C. At 15 °C, partially starved nauplii retained the ability to complete naupliar development but at a slower overall rate and with increased mortality relative to controls. These effects were more pronounced in the 96-h group. Increased mortality of stage VI nauplii was evident in both partially starved groups (7.1% for 48 h, 18.8% for 96 h) relative to unstarved controls (3.1%). Stage II nauplii exhibited little resistance to starvation and survival potential may have decreased as soon as 24 h.  相似文献

The life history of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin and its role in fouling communities of Golden Horn Bay (Peter the Great Bay), which is subjected to thermal pollution, were studied. The warm-water B. amphitrite occurs as a common minor species on operational vessels and waterworks in Peter the Great Bay, where it was brought by ocean-going ships operating on Russia–Japan lines. Even in the conditions of the higher temperature regime of Golden Horn Bay, the reproductive season of B. amphitrite is confined to the summer and autumn months. The adult individuals brought by ships in summer produce 2–3 generations of larvae. The development of larvae and their settling on the substrate occurs from August to October within a broad temperature range from 22.5 up to 12°C. Even in the low temperatures of Golden Horn Bay the larvae attain a greater size than those in tropical and subtropical waters. The juveniles have time to reach maturity and to produce their own progeny, but most often they perish with winter drop in the water temperature. It was shown that in Peter the Great Bay there is dependent population of B. amphitrite inhabiting the anthropogenic substrates only in the warm season: water works, idle vessels, and operational offshore vessels. The water temperature is the limiting factor of successful acclimation of that species.  相似文献

The structure and state of the reproductive system were studied in the periwinkles Littorina brevicula and L. mandshurica from the coastal area of Vladivostok and in the dogwhelk Nucella heyseana from the protected area of Vostok Bay and from contaminated sites in Amursky Bay. These species were investigated for the presence of imposex and intersex (pathological changes caused by endocrine disruption under the influence of toxic substances). The pathological changes revealed in the gonads of Littorina were oocyte resorption and lipofuscin accumulation; an intersex condition was not found. Imposex specimens (with penis formation) were found among Nucella females from Amursky Bay. The relative penis length in females was 25% of the penis length in males. This kind of pathology was not found in Nucella from clean waters of Vostok Bay.  相似文献

The euryhaline bay barnacle Balanus improvisus has one of the broadest salinity tolerances of any barnacle species. It is able to complete its life cycle in salinities close to freshwater (3 PSU) up to fully marine conditions (35 PSU) and is regarded as one of few truly brackish-water species. Na+/K+ ATPase (NAK) has been shown to be important for osmoregulation when marine organisms are challenged by changing salinities, and we therefore cloned and examined the expression of different NAKs from B. improvisus. We found two main gene variants, NAK1 and NAK2, which were approximately 70% identical at the protein level. The NAK1 mRNA existed in a long and short variant with the encoded proteins differing only by 27 N-terminal amino acids. This N-terminal stretch was coded for by a separate exon, and the two variants of NAK1 mRNAs appeared to be created by alternative splicing. We furthermore showed that the two NAK1 isoforms were differentially expressed in different life stages and in various tissues of adult barnacle, i.e the long isoform was predominant in cyprids and in adult cirri. In barnacle cyprid larvae that were exposed to a combination of different salinities and pCO2 levels, the expression of the long NAK1 mRNA increased relative to the short in low salinities. We suggest that the alternatively spliced long variant of the Nak1 protein might be of importance for osmoregulation in B. improvisus in low salinity conditions.  相似文献

The nervous system of nauplii of the crustacean taxon Cirripedia was analysed in the species Balanus improvisus Darwin, 1854 using for the first time immunocytochemical staining against serotonin, RFamide and α-tubulin in combination with confocal laser scanning microscopy. This approach revealed a circumoesophageal neuropil ring with nerves extending to the first and second antennae and to the mandibles, all features typical for Crustacea. In addition, RFamidergic structures are present in the region of the thoraco-abdomen. A pair of posterior nerves and a pair of lateral nerves run in anterior-posterior direction and are connected by a thoracic nerve ring and a more posteriorly situated commissure. A median nerve is situated along the ventral side of the thoraco-abdomen. The innervation of frontolateral horns and the frontal filaments are α-tubulin-positive. Several pairs of large neurons in the protocerebrum, along the circumoesophageal connectives and in the mandibular ganglion stain only for serotonin. Due to the almost complete absence of comparable data on the neuroanatomy of early (naupliar) stages in other Crustacea, we include immunocytochemical data on the larvae of the branchiopod, Artemia franciscana Kellogg, 1906 in our analysis. We describe several characteristic neurons in the brains of the nauplius larvae of both species which are also found in decapod larvae and in adult brains of other crustaceans. Furthermore, our data reveal that the naupliar brain of cirripedes is more complex than the adult brain. It is concluded that this ontogenetic brain reduction is related to the sessile life style of adult Cirripedia.  相似文献

Gregarious settlement is essential for reproduction and survival of many barnacles. A glycoprotein, settlement-inducing protein complex (SIPC) has been recognized as a signal for settlement and it is expressed in both conspecific adults and larvae. Although the settlement-inducing activities of SIPC are species-specific, the molecular-based mechanism by which larvae distinguish conspecific SIPC from the SIPC of other species is still unknown. Here, the complete primary structure of the SIPC of Megabalanus coccopoma, as well as the partial structure of the SIPCs of Balanus improvisus, Megabalanus rosa, and Elminius modestus are reported. These SIPCs contain highly variable regions that possibly modulate the affinity for the receptor, resulting in the species specificity of SIPC. In addition, the distribution patterns of potential N-glycosylation sites were seen to be different among the various species. Differences in such post-translational modifications may contribute to the species specificity of SIPC.  相似文献
