In many states, Japanese beetle, Popilliajaponica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabeidae), is no longer quarantined, and management is left to professional applicators and consumers. Adult management in hybrid tea rose, Rosa L., was compared among biorational insecticides, novel imidacloprid applications (tablet, gel, and root dip), and conventional insecticides. Efficacy of biorational insecticides used by consumers varied widely and may not offer predictable management: mortality was 3.0% with Garlic Barrier, 5.0% with Monterey Neem Oil, 15.1% with Pygenic (1.4% pyrethrins), and 27.3% with Orange Guard (D-limonene). Only JB Killer (0.02% pyrethrins plus 0.2% piperonyl butoxide) had mortality of 90.9%, probably due to piperonyl butoxide. Professional biorationals did not show significant mortality: 7.7% with Azatin XL (azadirachtin) and 3.7% Conserve (spinosad). In contrast, conventional insecticides demonstrated significant mortality; 88.4% with Decathlon 20 WP (cyfluthrin) and 83.3% with Discus SC (imidacloprid plus cyfluthrin). New imidacloprid applications (tablet, gel, and root dip) worked as well as standard drench and granular methods, but they showed 9.1-42.7% mortality. However, beetles were incapacitated as demonstrated by inability to walk (82-106-s flip time) compared with controls (30-s flip time). No phytotoxicity was observed in any treatments. However, some imidacloprid treatments produced growth enhancement: higher leaf chlorophyll (1X, 3X granular, and one tablet), and larger leaf area and higher nitrogen (3X granular, drench). The highest (active ingredient) imidacloprid was in 3X granular treatment, which in an unplanned infestation, showed highest numbers of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). Effects of imidacloprid on leaf quality and mite outbreaks deserves research.  相似文献

The effect of two isolates of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin (389.93 and 392.93) on root-feeding stages of cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), was studied under glasshouse and field conditions. In glasshouse studies, the effect of drenching a suspension of conidia (concentration 1 x 10(8) m(-1), 40 ml per plant, applied on four occasions) onto the base of cabbage plants infested with D. radicum eggs was compared with mixing conidial suspension into compost modules (concentration 1 x 10(8) ml(-1), 25 ml per plant) used to raise seedlings. Drench application reduced the mean number of larvae and pupae recovered per plant by up to 90%, but the compost module treatment had no statistically significant effect. Both application methods reduced the emergence of adult flies from pupae by up to 92%. Most conidia applied as a drench application remained in the top 10-cm layer of compost. Applications of the fungicides iprodione and tebuconazole, which are used routinely on brassica crops, were compatible with using M. anisopliae 389.93 against D. radicum under glasshouse conditions, even though these fungicides were inhibitory to fungal growth on SDA medium. In a field experiment, drench applications of M. anisopliae 389.93 to the base of cauliflower plants at concentrations of 1 x 10(6) to 1 x 10(8) conidia ml(-1) did not control D. radicum populations, although up to 30% of larval cadavers recovered supported sporulating mycelium. Drench applications often exhibited considerable lateral movement on the soil surface before penetrating the ground, which may have reduced the amount of inoculum in contact with D. radicum larvae.  相似文献

寄主钾营养对烟粉虱发育、存活和寄主选择的影响   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
为了探讨寄主钾营养对烟粉虱发育、存活和寄主选择的影响,设置了K0(0 mg/L)、K30(30 mg/L)、K60(60 mg/L)、K120(120 mg/L)和K240(240 mg/L)5种不同钾浓度,研究了烟粉虱在不同处理黄瓜上的发育历期、存活率、体形以及成虫的寄主选择。 在不同钾浓度处理寄主上从卵到成虫存活率以K30处理黄瓜上最高(84.7%),其次依次为K60(83.8%)、K120(76.2%)、K0(71.4%)和K240(64.8%)。

In fungitoxicity tests against Phytophthora cinnamomi on Chamaecyparis lawsoniana cv. Ellwoodii, a drench of furalaxyl (1000 mg a.i./l) applied to the compost in which 1-yr-old plants were growing, 1 wk before they were inoculated with 650 000 zoospores, controlled disease for at least 12 months. With an inoculum dose of 650 zoospores/plant, furalaxyl at 500 mg a.i./l controlled disease even when inoculation was 12 wk after fungicide treatment. Aluminium tris (ethyl phosphonate) (2000 mg a.i./l) applied as a drench 1 wk before inoculation with 650 000 zoospores/plant did not prevent root infection but delayed foliar symptoms for 9 months: the same treatment, using etridiazole (500 mg a.i./l) only slightly reduced disease incidence. When applied as a single drench 2 days before inoculation, prothiocarb (2000 mg a.i./l) and cuprammonium compounds (200 mg a.i./l) were much less effective than furalaxyl (1200 mg a.i./l), sodium ethyl phosphonate (1500 mg a.i./l), aluminium tris (ethyl phosphonate) (1500 mg a.i./l) or etridiazole (500 mg a.i./l). However, a drench of furalaxyl at 1000 mg a.i./l, aluminium tris (ethyl phosphonate) at 2000 mg a.i./l or etridiazole at 500 mg'a.i./l did not eradicate P. cinnamomi from compost containing infected root debris. Pre-planting drenching of the compost was ineffective. All fungicide treatments were non-phototoxic to 1-yr-old C. lawsoniana cv. Ellwoodii. These results are of special relevance to the control of P. cinnamomi on container-grown woody ornamentals.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether silverleaf whiteflies, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, on poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima Willdenow ex Klotsch, can be controlled with imidacloprid applied by subirrigation. Different amounts of imidacloprid uptake by the growing medium were obtained by not watering the subirrigated plants for 0, 1, 2, or 4 d before the imidacloprid application. These treatments resulted in absorption of 12-175 ml of imidacloprid solution by the growing medium. These treatments were compared with untreated control plants and plants that were treated with a standard drench application (100 ml) to the top of the growing medium. All imidacloprid treatments resulted in a significant decrease in both the survival of adult whiteflies and number of immature whiteflies on the plants. Subirrigation treatments resulted in better control of adult and immature whiteflies than drench application. Withholding water for 2 or 4 d before the imidacloprid application by subirrigation improved control of immature whiteflies. This indicates that the application of imidacloprid to poinsettia by subirrigation is a practical and efficient method to control silverleaf whiteflies.  相似文献

Caterpillars living in aggregations may derive several benefits that outweigh the costs, including better survivorship and improved growth rates. I tested whether larval group size had an effect on these two vital rates in Euselasia chrysippe. These caterpillars feed gregariously during all instars and move in processionary form over the host plant and even pupate together. There was a positive relationship between group size and larval survivorship in the field, although genetic variability was not taken into account in this experiment. Under laboratory conditions, there was also a positive relationship between group size, and larval growth rate and adult weight. This supports the hypothesis that aggregations facilitate feeding and larval growth. Single sixth instar larvae in the laboratory also had a lower survivorship than larvae in groups. These results provide further evidence of the benefits of group living for gregarious caterpillars.  相似文献

  1. The effects of larval rearing density and species relative proportions on life-history parameters of two necrophagous Diptera, Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann) (Calliphoridae) and Boettcherisca formosensis Kirner and Lopes (Sarcophagidae), were investigated in mixed cultures. Larval rearing density had a significant effect on larval to adult survivorship, duration of immature development, adult size and relative performance (measured by the composite index of performance, r′) of both species. However, species relative proportions affected adult size of both flies and the duration of immature development of B. formosensis only.
  2. B. formosensis had a higher survivorship than H. ligurriens in all mixed cultures and showed a similar survivorship pattern to that in pure cultures. By contrast, survivorship of H. ligurriens was lower in mixed than in pure cultures.
  3. H. ligurriens adults reared from mixed cultures were smaller than those from pure cultures of comparable density, but B. formosensis adults from pure and mixed cultures were of similar size.
  4. The results suggest that competition between B. formosensis and H. ligurriens larvae was asymmetric and the former was the superior competior.
  5. At low larval densities in mixed cultures, the presence of H. ligurriens enhanced the performance (as measured by r′) of B. formosensis, a consequence of suspected interspecific facilitation of larval growth.

Petroleum ether, acetone, water and aqueous extract of Pedalium murex L. (Pedalaceae) leaves, root and fruit were tested against fourth instar larvae of the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) under laboratory conditions using leaf dip method. Larval mortality; larval, pupal and adult periods; pupal weight, pupation and adult emergence; larval and pupal deformities of S. litura were recorded. All the tested solvent extracts of P. murex were effective against S. litura life stages by causing mortality in a dose dependent manner. However, the efficacy was more significant with respect to acetone (leaf and root) and petroleum ether (root) at higher concentrations (0.8%) which leads to 100% larval mortality. The water and aqueous extracts of root caused 86.6 and 88.0% larval mortality respectively at 4% concentration. Among the plant parts tested, root had more importance followed by leaf and fruit. Plant extracts extended the larval, pupal and adult periods; reduced the pupal weight, pupal and adult emergence and caused larval–pupal deformities. Total life time was highly prolonged in acetone extracts of P. murex root. Though all the extracts were found to have insecticide activity, acetone and petroleum ether extracts of P. murex root can be used as an effective alternative to modern synthetic insecticides. Bioactive principles from these extracts can be isolated, identified and integrated in S. litura management.  相似文献

Insecticide drenches were applied to postharvest field-grown nursery plants harvested as 60-cm-diameter balled and burlapped (B&B) root balls for controlling third instars of Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, lambda-cyhalothrin, and thiamethoxam were drench-applied in fall and spring tests at volumes of runoff (1X; approximately equal 2.57 liters per drench per root ball) or twice runoff (2X). Tests also examined consecutive drenches (two, four, or six) and B&B rotation between drenches. Fall-applied drenches did not meet the Domestic Japanese Beetle Harmonization Plan (DJHP) standards of < or =1 grub and ranged from 0 to 90% control. However, most fall-applied drenches significantly reduced grub numbers relative to the untreated root balls. Spring-applied drenches were more effective than fall drenches: chlorpyrifos treatments gave 94-100% control, whereas other spring-applied treatments were less consistent, including thiamethoxam (83-100% control) and bifenthrin (61-100% control). Lambda-cyhalothrin was not effective. A higher drench volume (2X) did not significantly improve treatment efficacy; however, grub numbers decreased as the number of drenches increased for fall-applied chlorpyrifos and thiamethoxam and spring-applied bifenthrin. Rotation of root balls significantly reduced grub numbers compared with nonrotated treatments for fall-applied chlorpyrifos (six drenches) and bifenthrin (two or six drenches), but these treatments did not meet DJHP standards. The study indicates chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin, and thiamethoxam drenches can control Japanese beetle in the spring and may provide a new postharvest option to certify B&B plants for Japanese beetle.  相似文献

Larval growth and intraspecific competition of Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) larvae and consequent root injury in container-grown citrus in the greenhouse were evaluated. Roots of Carrizo citrange, Citrus sinesis L. Osbeck x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.; Cleopatra mandarin, C. reticulata Blanco, and Swingle citrumelo, C. paradisi Macf. x P. trifoliata (L.) Raf. rootstock seedlings grown in Candler fine sand and potting soil were colonized with different populations of D. abbreviatus larvae. Larvae were exposed to the seedlings for 79 d. Larval growth and development increased steadily for approximately 70 d on all rootstock-soil combinations, at which time most larvae were instars 6-8. Most feeding injury occurred to roots when larvae were between instars 3 and 6. Larval weight reached a plateau at approximately 70 d, but often declined between 70 and 79 d. When larvae were small, injury to seedlings developed slowly, primarily on fibrous roots, then feeding increased rapidly, often resulting in total consumption of both fibrous root and bark tissue. Although not statistically significant, root injury developed slightly slower on Swingle citrumelo compared with Carrizo and Cleopatra rootstocks, but damage was comparable by 79 d. Little or no difference in consumptive benefit to the larvae was found between the rootstocks. Based on larval weight days, little feeding injury occurred during the first 21 d, but increased rapidly between 21 and 60 d. Soil type affected the rate of larval growth and development, with potting soil contributing to greater growth rates. Detritus in potting soil provided little or no nutritional resource, suggesting that the effect of potting soil on larval development was primarily physical. In addition, fewer inoculated larvae per seedling exhibited greater weight gains than higher infestation densities, suggesting that intraspecific competition for nutritional resources influenced larval development.  相似文献

An emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and granular (G) formulation of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium brunneum strain F52 (formerly Metarhizium anisopliae strain F52) were tested against unfed adults and nymphs of Ixodes scapularis Say in the laboratory. Three exposure methods; dip, surface contact, and direct spray application, and three exposure time intervals (3, 30, and 300 min) were used to evaluate the EC formulation. Application rates ranged from 2.6 x 10(2) to 2.6 x 10(8) conidia/cm2. The surface treatment was used for granular formulation with concentrations ranging from 2.3 x 10(5) to 2.3 x 10(7) conidia/cm2 for same three exposure times. Both the EC and G formulations of this fungus were highly pathogenic against I. scapularis adults and nymphs. Logistic regression analysis found formulation, spore concentration, time of exposure, and observation period were significant or highly significant factors influencing tick mortality. For adult I. scapularis, the spray application with the EC formulation of M. brunneum F52 resulted in a lower LC50 (5.9 x 10(4) conidia/cm2) at 30 min than surface exposure to the EC (LC50 = 1.3 x 10(6) conidia/cm2) or G formulation (LC50 = 8.1 x 10(5) conidia/cm2). At higher concentrations, fungal activity was evident in adult I. scapularis held at 5 degrees C suggesting the fungus may provide control in the cooler fall season. While the observed pathogenicity of a fungus against ticks can be dependent upon the bioassay assessment, we found nymphs and adults of I. scapularis to be highly susceptible to M. brunneum F52, regardless of the exposure method used.  相似文献

A commercially available neem seed extract, Neemix 4.5, containing 4.5% azadirachtin (AZA), was assessed for biological activity against the root weevil Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.), an important exotic insect pest of Florida citrus. Laboratory bioassays against neonatal and 3-wk-old larvae fed sliced carrot treated with Neemix produced dose-dependent larval mortality and reduced fresh weights among survivors of treatments. The weight response was greater than the mortality response for both larval age groups. Neonates treated with 45 mg/liter AZA weighed 60% less than those in the control after 4 wk. Three-week-old larvae treated with 45 mg/ liter AZA weighed 30% less than those in the control after 5 wk. When neonates were exposed to insect diet incorporated with Neemix, reductions in larval survival and weight were observed at concentrations as low as 4.8 mg/liter AZA after 6 wk. Larval growth was inhibited by >97% with 42.9 mg/liter AZA in the diet. A soil drench containing 30 mg/liter AZA reduced the survival and weight gain of neonates added to potted citrus and provided protection to the roots in a greenhouse experiment. A concentration of 90 mg/liter AZA was required to provide protection of citrus roots against 4-wk-old larvae. Reproductive effects were observed when adult weevils were fed foliage treated with Neemix. The numbers of larvae hatching per egg mass were reduced by 27% and 68% at 30 and 90 mg/liter AZA, respectively. These results suggest that Neemix should be further evaluated for use in integrated pest management (IPM) programs of citrus.  相似文献

We investigated the direct and indirect effects of elevated atmospheric CO(2) on freshwater container habitats and their larval mosquito occupants. We predicted that a doubling of atmospheric CO(2) would (1) alter the chemical properties of water in this system, (2) slow degradation of leaf litter, and (3) decrease larval growth of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) mosquitoes raised on that litter under competitive conditions. Effects of elevated CO(2) on water quality parameters were not detected, but the presence of leaf litter significantly reduced pH and dissolved oxygen relative to water-filled containers without litter. Degradation rates of oak leaf litter from plants grown under elevated CO(2) atmospheres did not differ from breakdown rates of litter from ambient CO(2) conditions. Litter from plants grown in an elevated CO(2) atmospheres did not influence mosquito population growth, but mosquito production decreased significantly with increasing larval density. Differences among mosquito density treatments influenced survivorship most strongly among male Ae. albopictus and time to emergence most strongly among females, suggesting fundamental sex-determined differences in response to competition. Results of this and other studies indicate that direct and indirect effects of doubled atmospheric CO(2) are minimal in artificial containers with freshwater.  相似文献

Abstract:  Corn plants, Zea mays L. cv. Saccharata 'Guardian' fertilized with low (100 mg N/l), medium (300 mg N/l) and high (500 mg N/l) nitrogen doses at three times per week were used to study the effect of foliar nitrogen on the development, survivorship, reproduction, intrinsic rate of increase and adult body weight of Peregrinus maidis (Ashmead), a serious pest and the vector of maize stripe tenuvirus and maize mosaic rhabdovirus in tropical and subtropical areas. The results showed that the higher nitrogen treatments resulted in the higher nitrogen concentrations in the plants. The insects that developed on corn plants receiving more nitrogen had a significantly shorter development time and higher immature survival rate and laid significantly more eggs. Plants with higher nitrogen concentration also resulted in significantly greater adult mass. Heavier body weight is advantageous because heavier adult females have greater daily oviposition rates than lighter ones. These life history parameters as well as population intrinsic rate of increase were positively correlated with the nitrogen levels in the treated plants. The differences of adult longevity and preoviposition period among different nitrogen treatments were also significant; however, no significant correlation was found between the nitrogen fertilization rate and adult longevity, as well as preoviposition period.  相似文献

Benomyl and benodanil, applied to tobacco seedlings before transplanting, reduced sore shin infection. Benodanil was the more effective, sometimes restricting damage to 5% of the surface area of the buried portion of stems, compared with 50–60% in untreated plants. The fungicides were applied either as a seedbed drench or a root-stem dip. The dip method used less fungicide and was generally more effective than the drench at equal concentration but was less practical. Benodanil was over three times as active as benomyl against Rhizoctonia solani in liquid culture.  相似文献

Pyracantha (Pyracantha coccinea M. J. Roem. Lalandei) plants were treated with uniconazole at 0.5 mg ai container–1 as a medium drench, 150 mg ai L–1 as a foliar spray, or left untreated. Plants from all treatments were placed under three water regimes: drought acclimated, nonacclimated and later exposed to drought, or nonstressed. Acclimated plants were conditioned by seven 4-day stress cycles (water withheld), while nonacclimated were well watered prior to a single 4-day stress cycle at the same time as the seventh drought cycle of acclimated plants. Nonstressed plants were well watered throughout the study. Nonstressed plants had higher leaf water potentials and leaf conductances than acclimated and nonacclimated plants, and transpiration rates were higher in nonacclimated than acclimated plants. Uniconazole did not affect leaf water potential, leaf conductance, or transpiration rate. Acclimated plants had smaller leaf areas and leaf, stem, and root dry weights than nonacclimated or nonstressed plants. Plants drenched with uniconazole had the lowest stem and root dry weights. Acclimated plants also contained higher N concentrations than nonacclimated or nonstressed plants, and higher P concentrations than nonacclimated plants. Uniconazole medium drench treatments increased levels of Mn and P. Calcium concentration was increased in plants receiving either medium drench or foliar applications.  相似文献

Lythrum salicaria L., purple loosestrife, an invasive Eurasian perennial, is degrading wetlands across temperate North America. Chemical, physical, and mechanical methods failed to provide long-term control. Therefore, four host-specific insect species (two leaf feeders, a root feeder, and a flower feeder) were introduced as biological control agents. To increase the availability of adults of the root feeding weevil Hylobius transversovittatus Goeze for field releases, we developed a semiartificial diet. Suitability of different diet formulations (varying vitamin mixes, salt mixes, antimicrobials, water content, root content) and temperatures for larval development were evaluated. We also monitored how rearing on artificial diet and the number of larvae per container affected larval development time, larval survival, adult weight, and incidences of deformities. Rearing larvae on artificial diet reduced development time from 1-2 yr to 2-3 mo. Larval development was fastest and survival rates highest under constant temperatures of 25 degrees C. Hatch rate and larval survival decreased if eggs were surface sterilized. Using FABCO antimicrobials could not prevent fungal contamination; use of methyl paraben and sorbic acid was successful in suppressing fungal and bacterial growth throughout larval development time to <10%. The moisture content of the diet did not significantly affect larval survival, development, or adult weight. Decreasing the proportion of purple loosestrife roots in the diet reduced adult weight and the proportion of larvae completing development, and increased development time; no larvae were able to complete development in root-free diet. With an increase in the number of larvae per cup, survival rates were reduced. The experiments revealed a female biased sex ratio: females consistently developed faster and were heavier than males. Incidence of adult deformities was consistently below 5%. Increased availability of adults for field release as a result of mass production using the semiartificial diet will accelerate the biocontrol program targeting purple loosestrife. We are able to produce several hundred weevils per week and have adapted the diet to rear other root-feeding weevils.  相似文献

Two subspecies of the papilionid butterfly Byasa alcinous , B. a. bradanus and B. a. alcinous , have varying degrees of larval aggregation. Early instar larvae of ssp. bradanus always occur in aggregations. To determine the functions of larval aggregation in this subspecies, we examined the effects of leaf toughness on larval performance when caterpillars were reared alone and in aggregations. Newly hatched larvae were reared either individually or in groups of 10 and were fed either tough or tender leaves of Aristolochia debilis . When fed tough leaves, more gregarious larvae survived the first instar. This difference between solitary and aggregated larvae did not occur when caterpillars were fed soft leaves. The effects of aggregation on larval weight and duration were not significant between leaf-toughness treatments. Larval aggregation of B. a. bradanus improves larval survivorship in early instars that use host plants with tough leaves.  相似文献
